2/9 Season Two, Episode 2: The Times they are a Changin-Scarecrow and Mrs King

Amanda is waiting for Lee at the Friedensengel.. Well done finding it Amanda! Smile I love how Amanda is looking around for Lee, on alert! Not knowing where he could pop up! poor Amanda- at least she knows her hair is looking good Winking smile
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000333033

Lee swaggers up to Amanda, yes swaggers! you go 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000335835look and see for yourself Winking smile He looks relaxed and happy to be on the job, and meeting Amanda Winking smile
I love the huge sigh Amanda gives when he arrives – like: phew!! he didn’t sneak up on me that time! 1ha haaaa
No hello from Lee though.. he just picks up where 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000341441he left off an hour ago!
Lee: Look, if anyone should come too near, just, you know, be yourself. You’re a tourist. [Noooo Manners! Can’t you just say hello?! Winking smile]
Amanda: Yes. [Amanda must be thinking he’s nuts.. of course she’s a tourist- she hasn’t realised 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000343543this is a job yet- but if she doesn’t think that- what is she thinking Lee is doing?? meeting with her?? did she think this was Lee joining her on her holiday? tee heee!! they could have had some 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000347747fun with that!!! ]
Lee: Amanda, we need you for one simple assignment.
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000349149Amanda: Oh, I’m sorry, I can’t. I’m on vacation with Mother and the boys. 1ha haaaa
Lee: Uh, not really.
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000353353Amanda: Yes, really.  I- [she taps his arm with the map.. all smiles..1HaHaHa]
I won a trip.
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000355455Lee: No you didn’t.
[Lee doesn’t get it! ugh!!]
Amanda: Yes, I did! Open-mouthed smile
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000357557Lee: No, the contest was rigged, we wanted you to win.
[Awh!! Amanda’s face just falls here.. poor 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000358958Amanda!!] Billy had set it all up.
Amanda: You mean I’m not blessed?
Lee: You’re not what?
[Lee truly has no idea..]
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000363163Amanda: Mother said that I had a special — never mind. [awh! she covers her disappointment 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000366099automatically here with a smile.. such an Amanda thing to do.. and where KJ is such a great actress!] Lee: Ah.
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000369469Amanda: 1redfaceWell, it’s just that, you know, I was so excited about it. I mean, I’ve never won anything before-
[Lee interupts..]

Tell us what you think of this – but for me, I think this was really mean to do this to Amanda! Who wouldn’t get excited over a winning an overseas trip? and then to take it away from her – ugh!! Agents!!! and it was all so unnecessary.. It is clear Lee had nooo idea this would be a problem, and hadn’t thought about it – he didn’t expect her not to be ok with this –he should have known though! Smile with tongue out Lee.. Amanda was smiling from ear to ear.. then you told her the contest was rigged – No-More-Smiling!!!!!! Get it??!!

Lee rudely cuts off Amanda’s explanation for her reaction saying: –This is going to be a simple conversation, how about I talk and you listen.1OMG
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000373673
-Ouch!!! Lee Stetson that is really mean!! grrrr.. talk about patronising!!!

I was so relieved Amanda didn’t let this one pass! She gets fiesty here with this trickery of Lee’s, his ‘playing’ with Amanda and rudely cutting her off has gone too far!

2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000375775Amanda: I don’t think I like this. [I think this is a first no?? go Amanda!1BIG GRIN ]

2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000376476Lee:
What?
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000379979Amanda: I think that by now, you should probably trust me. You should have told me that I was coming to Europe on 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000383483assignment. It would have been simple, fair, and honest.

Lee gets cranky with Amanda here.. and defends not telling her saying: The simple thing to 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000386986do is not to tell you anything more than you need to know, that way there are no suspicious moves on your part and no mistakes, I don’t want 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000393293you getting yourself into trouble, ok. [as he gives his speech here, he seems to calm himself down and end with a smile.. Hmmmm..]

Easy for him to say!  Lee doesn’t like surprises.. and always wants to be in control.. yeah Lee loves this need to know stuff- because he is the one who gets to decide. ugh! I am comforted by how Amanda gets him really good in the episode Need to Know, Season 4 turns the table on him brilliantly! ..[How I won’t say.. don’t want to spoil Redgold Winking smile ] It’s good!!!1Emoticon cheekywink

Amanda gives a head toss: I’ll just be a tourist.. 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000396796[yup you’re not going to win this one Amanda.. just yet.. Winking smile but I like how by the end of the episode, Lee can see she needed to know!!! tee hee]

2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000399599Lee: Good, good. Now, a man will be contacting you with a message. Just bring that message to me. 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000401701Amanda: That’s all?
Lee: Yeah.
Amanda: We got a free trip to Europe for that?
[I’m glad she says this- it is ridiculous, and toooo big a stretch for me!!]
Hmm that all sounds fair when Lee explains it.. only, if the family are part of her cover where are they?!!! All her authenticity is lost when Lee asks her to meet with him and the contact.. blah blah..

I don’t get the spy logic going on here-usually it is not this much of a stretch- I thought To catch a mongoose was a bit of a flimsy premise ( Amanda is the only person who can identify Conrad?) but compared to this?? To catch a mongoose is genius! In this episode, the job they give Amanda could have been done by anyone- so they fly her whole family to europe for her to do it? Hilarious!!! This episode’s premise doesn’t make any sense at all..

Ok, I’ll put logic behind me.. and move on.. ahem..[focus on Lee’s hair.. focus on Lee’s hair.. ahem] So Amanda’s little job is to collect a message from a guy called Haddy and pass it on to Lee.. Haddy was a student radical in the 60s.. ( an explanation for ‘times they are a changin’? maybe..) Amanda explains she has heard of this man as she and Lee walk off ( Whooo Lee puts his arm around Amanda.. but only a cover arm! hehehe)
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000419919
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000425525So how’s this for logic[nope can’t switch it off! haa!!] Little miss ‘I should have been told this was an assignment’ then proceeds to ask a couple of questions about Haddy, and why does America want back a terrorist? what will happen to him? and Mr ‘don’t know anything more than you need to know’ is suddenly spilling all 1683 of his beans about Haddy.

Oi!!! I thought she wasn’t suppose to know anything Lee? He just said that less than a minute ago!! What’s that Lee? your arm around Amanda made your head fuzzy? made your logic spin? Ahhhh! Ok, now I understand why you were giving away too much information!! I’ll go with that..otherwise it makes no sense to me at all!

Uh oh.. I need to concentrate here.. ( don’t focus on the hair.. don’t focus on the hair.. ahem..)
Lee
: Well, Amanda, we’re making a trade here. See, he’s bringing with him some vital information on this terrorist organization, the Riebaden group. They’re not fun people, believe me. They’re threatening widespread violence if the U.S.-Western European trade pact is ratified.
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000460560Amanda: This kind of sounds like a job for Francine.
Lee: Now, now, don’t worry, you’re not in any danger from Haddy. He’s a
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000463363speechmaker, not a bomb-thrower. A terrorist would smell an agent in a second. But not a tourist. 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000467567Amanda: What about a nervous tourist?
Lee: Look, everything is set. München
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000475975Brauhaus Beer Garden tonight. Haddy will not contact you unless he feels safe.
This key unlocks the door to an 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000479479exclusive beer stein collection where each member has his own stein. It also has a code number to a special mug which you must use. This is how Haddy will know who to approach. Any questions?
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000491391Amanda: What in the world am I going to tell my mother?
[Lee doesn’t have that problem.. and neither would Amanda if she hadn’t brought her whole flippin family to Germany! ]
Lee: Be inventive [Uggghhh!!] Love the cute little medieval SMK riff we hear to end this moment!!! Such an smk thing to do!!! Smile and Ugh!! Lee just leaves Amanda – no goodbye!
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000497697
He smiles and walks off leaving Amanda to come up with an excuse.. Oh Lee is being infuriating in this part of this episode! ( at least he didn’t sneak off on her I guess Winking smile )

Time to meet the bad guys! Winking smile
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000513813At a mansion, we meet a guy with a butler, who drinks Cognac and who knows about Ming dynasty vases, so refined he must be a baddie!! Winking smile Looks like this baddie is of the two goons variety..and an equal opportunity terrorist..
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000521521
Oh and look! Baron Von Snob drinks tea!
Check out the tea 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000532732sipping baddie’s cup of choice this week!
No wimpy tea cups for this man, nothing but a whole vase full will do! and piping hot! 😉 ok ok.. I stretch the truth a little..Ok.. alot!

Uh oh.. the baddies are on to Haddy, the guy Amanda is suppose to meet with..
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000539739Inga: He’s abandoning our cause. I can feel it. He knows too much. Maybe we should kill him now.
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000570570Von Snob: You never understood the value of patience, my dear. The plan remains intact. Haddy will perform the assassination of the American as intended. Then I, as a loyal citizen, will kill Haddy. 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000569169And to the world we can say that our Riebaden organization will have a new brave martyr for the cause. I still want you to follow Haddy closely, though.
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000574774Inga: And if Haddy goes to the other side before your great plan?
Von Snob: Well, then, Christmas comes early for you, my dear Inga. Kill him.

Whoaa.. these baddies mean business and I guess this means they will be watching Haddy’s meeting with Amanda that night at the Bierhaus! eek!!!

[Claudia, I’m loving your german knowledge in your  transcript for this ep thank you! wherever you are!]

I shall leave it there for now.. Thanks for reading! Please feel free to share any feedback, requests, questions.. comments.. It would be wonderful to hear from you! byeee for now..

  1. Does anyone else notice that the baddie’s voice changes at 9:23 in the episode when he says “will have a new brave martyr…”? I wonder what the original line was and why he had the voice over in someone else’s voice. The script has the same dialogue.

    1. Whooooo this makes sense LeeLovesAmanda – no I don’t think I noticed that.. there have been a few times where smk has changed politically sensitive references – which I think I’ve only found out because german smk fans shared what their dub of a line was that was different in english kind of thing. but this makes a lot of sense! Thanks for sharing!

    2. If the lines were the same, I’m guessing it was just regular ADR, where they have to re-record lines because of background noise or something like that. On You Only Die Twice (Trying to keep this vague enough so it won’t count as a spoiler, because I can’t remember a better example from an earlier ep), there’s a scene with Lee near the end in a jumpsuit about to sneak into a building and Bruce’s voice definitely sounds different and the audio/video synch is off slightly and I think they had to rerecord that because of the background noise in the scene.

I remember hearing NCIS actors (Michael Weatherly maybe?) talking about having to do that sometimes on one of the DVD commentaries they did.

    A. The baddies in this episode totally give me the eebie jeebies, all in different ways.
    B. Lee’s behavior here makes me want to take back my comment in Post 1 where I insinuated maybe Lee was being nice in giving Amanda a chance for some family time before throwing her into work mode. He’s not being nice about much in this scene, is he!? As gorgeous as he may be and all…😉
    C. Mommynificent, I have totally started thinking the same things about how subconsciously watching SMK in my younger years has spilled over into my adulthood! That’s so funny!!

  3. Ok, I have to comment one more time on Lee’s hair! So swoony I can hardly even hear him talking, which is good because he’s so rude here.

I have to share something that only this group will truly appreciate. I was so in love with this show in Jr High and early high school and watched the reruns whenever I could find them. Then I haven’t seen it for 25 years until my sister gave me season 1 on DVD and I bought the rest to share with my girls who are 12 and 15, the same age I was when I discovered this show. We are loving watching it together, but my girls keep cracking up because they keep finding things I do that can only have come from my formative years with Scarecrow and Mrs. King. For example, my kitchen is entirely blue and white and looks shockingly like Amanda’s kitchen in season one. I had no idea, but my girls almost fell out of their chairs when we first saw the kitchen. Then this episode came, and they freaked out because this is exactly how I cut my two little boys’ hair. It’s the only haircut I like on them and I do it myself so it’s just right! Again, I had no idea it was related to Scarecrow, but my girls flipped when I swooned over his hair in this episode. They were like, “Mom, look at your sons!” We laughed so hard! Now they are hunting for all the ways this show has affected me and it is hilarious! I’ll share if any more good ones come up!

  4. #2019 rewatch
Lee did not give Amanda the number on her map for this “München Brauhaus Beer Garden,” which is fictitious. I think S&MK filmed at the Hofbräuhaus (which I visited) in Old Town Munich, where hundreds of personal beer mugs are stored in the Schwemme (their indoor Beer Hall). The Hofbräuhaus also has a Restaurant, an open-air Beer Garden and several rooms upstairs for private functions.

The Bavarian knight jousting at the Glockenspiel is Duke Wilhelm V, who also established the Hofbräuhaus brewery in 1589.

  5. Could Lee look less like a tourist?! Sling a camera round your neck and apparently that makes you look a tourist!!!!
So glad Amanda told Lee off about not telling her, while she was at it she should have had a go at the writers of the episode 😉
I won’t focus in the ludicrous plot holes, it’s got that many it could be Swiss cheese. Haddy won’t speak to an agent but he wants them to save his butt? Tsk tak beggars can’t be choosers 😉
Lee makes up for it with his arm around Amanda, getting awfully natural at doing that 😉
I love the harpsichord SMK theme they play. Assume it’s a nod to music style of Munich or Germany although I am too much of a philistine to know 😉

  6. I don’t know if anyone else noticed but the baron’s mansion is the same one they used in “Sudden Death”. Oh gosh, Lee looks gorgeous in this scene! I don’t like how he treats Amanda, but likes how she defends herself. I love Lee’s arm around Amanda even of it is a cover.

    1. ROFL smkfan! That’s so funny! I think it was the last post of this ep that I mentioned I saw the Baron’s house in Brunettes are In also.. Here’s another episode appearance! At least in Sudden Death they chose to present us with a different shot!

Thanks for point this out to us.. you have a great eye! 🙂
It must be the SMK baddie’s residence of choice! Crandall’s in Sudden Death.. the blind creepy baddie in ( sinclair is it? ) in Brunettes are in.. and Von Snob.. America.. Germany.. it doesn’t matter! 🙂 too funny.. I wonder if we’ll find it used anywhere else! Probably!! Keep your eyes peeled! 🙂 Is this house like the pineapple on psych? tee hee..

  7. Melissa — great idea about a fanvid. ” Hot and Cold” Ha ha! Sad to say I’ve warned my girls against being with guys that are ‘giving out such mixed signals’ (that’s the nicest way I can say it).
IWSOD – I actually brought out the indoor remote controlled helicopter my brother-in-law had bought my daughter and I had hid because it was totally inappropriate. “Look what I found!!!! Why don’t you have fun with it. Here’s some extra batteries!” Desperate times call for desperate measures. I am still traumatized when I had to sit through 3 hours my brother’s school recital where EVERY CLASS PLAYED 3 SONGS ON THAT CURSED ‘INSTRUMENT’. Of course, his class was last in the queue.

Eyes Wide Shut was a weird film, I only saw part of it on late night tv. It starred Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. I’ll just copy and paste from IMDB.

“A doctor becomes obsessed with having a sexual encounter after his wife admits to having sexual fantasies about a man she met and chastising him for dishonesty in not admitting to his own fantasies. This sets him off into unfulfilled encounters with a dead patient’s daughter and a hooker. But when he visits a nightclub, where a pianist friend Nick Nightingale is playing, he learns about a secret sexual group and decides to attend one of their congregations. However, he quickly learns he is in well over his head and finds he and his family are threatened.”

Speaking of movies, the overseas S&MK always remind of “Amercian Dreamer” with JoBeth Williams and Tom Conti. Has anyone else seen it? I am trying to get a DVD version since my VHS tape has long bit the dust (it’s on youtube, it will list Huckleberry Fox and Christopher Daniel-Barnes as the actors. They played her sons).

    1. Cindy, I LOVE “American Dreamer,” and I actually recommended it on the forum last winter for SMK fans while they were waiting for S3 to come out. Wouldn’t Amanda and Cathy/Rebecca get along well? They have a lot in common at the outset: two young sons, a boring partner (I mean Dean, not Lee), a house in the suburbs, untapped talents, and a yen for adventure. I bought that movie on DVD maybe four years ago, but it’s still available. (I just checked.) It was actually my “feel better” movie before I discovered SMK, and it still makes me laugh hard.

Since I loved “American Dreamer,” I think I’ll pass on “Eyes Wide Shut.”

Maybe it doesn’t make sense to bring Amanda’s whole family to Germany, but I’m so glad they did! I hate for people to be left out, and as much as I enjoy all the European episodes, I miss the whole crew in the others. And it’s only fair that Beverly Garland, Martha Smith, Mel Stewart, and the boys got to travel abroad for one episode, don’t you think?

      Like

      1. Yeah! I am glad I am not the only one who’s seen the movie. I thought Tom Conti and Jobeth Williams sizzled! He certainly suffered in that movie (but in such a hilarious way). I am not sure why the movie is so underrated. I think I am going to have to order it from Amazon.com (I keep dropping hints that it would be an excellent birthday/mother’s day/Christmas gift but I think it’s time I treated myself).

        Like

      2. All right, you’ve got me interested. Maybe I can get my husband to buy me Amercian Dreamer for…let’s see…anniversary is coming first. I could just treat myself, but I’m still nursing a bit of guilt over doing that with SMK season 3. So far, husband hasn’t noticed the new addition, or at least he hasn’t asked!

        Like

      3. I haven’t seen it, either. It’s available on Netflix via the DVDs. I put it at the top of my queue.

RedGold – I remember thinking that this set-up didn’t make any sense, but that it was nice that they paid for everyone to get to Europe. What a fabulous opportunity for the cast and crew!

I still don’t understand why they didn’t just relocate to Washington DC for the duration of the 1984 Olympics, but I’m sure there was a reason.

Oh well, at least the scenery is nice. 🙂

        Like

      4. Cindy and Paula, I think you definitely deserve a treat/present of “American Dreamer.” I hope that you like it, Paula and Melissa! Both of the leads are great in that film, and they look like they’re having such fun. Conti’s character, Alan, is quite different from Lee, but he’s sweet and very funny. I love his transition from amused to alarmed to charmed by the JoBeth Williams character. That film has some of the zingy, comedic energy of SMK, which is another point in its favor. AD and SMK came out within a year of each other, as I recall, but I think that was a coincidence, or maybe something in the water in the early 80s. Both are about women who want–and create–some genuine excitement in their lives!

I think that AD has a lot of loyal fans, and like SMK, it has a five-star average and many reviews on Amazon (142, actually–I just checked). It’s set largely in Paris, by the way, so the locations are a treat in themselves.

Melissa, I don’t know why SMK wasn’t filmed in Washington during the Olympics–not considered to be enough of a change, perhaps? I’m very partial to the European episodes, though. I’ll try to restrain myself in responding to IWSOD’s posts on them.

  9. Lee certainly is blowing hot and cold in this episode. First, he’s playing hide and seek with Amanda, then he gets all mean when she Amandarambles about winning the trip. Geesh! She should have walked away and continued her vacation!

I still don’t get Lee’s point. What would have been the harm in sending her knowing she was to meet with Haddy? She can fake being a tourist. If they had asked her to go for work, they wouldn’t have the additional possible complication of her family getting in harm’s way.

Paula, I don’t think Inga can sing. She really HATES music, at least Tinflute’s music. Maybe she’s jealous of his talent. 😉

Claudia is Munich tea garden where Amanda meets Haddy? I’ll take a pic of the facade and you can tell me if you know the place – I am guessing it is stock footage they are using for the upcoming bierhaus..

Hi Melissa – Indeed! Hot and Cold is the perfect description! I think Amanda deals with it very well all things considered.. and it only gets worse doesn’t it!! Sounds like you are all anticipating what is ahead of us in this episode but ( boo hoo!) I have been too busy today to get to smk! 😦
Oh Melissa – preach it sister!!! I am with you 100% this whole logic of Amanda being a genuine tourist makes my head hurt! And it is logic like this which enables people to brush off smk as a superficial bit of fluff, when in reality (IMHO!) it is a very cleverly written show with deeper meaning than it first appears.. Oh well.. what can we do?? !! but glad to hear it’s not just me ! 😉

Inga and velvet underground? I don’t know them sorry Paula.. but she is great character! She oozes violence!!
flutey boy? you guys crack me up.. yes maybe she is jealous.. what is it flutey boy says coming up?? there is something wrong with people who don’t like music ( I think that is where Inga tells him she will stick the flute in his.. ahem.. ear! ) 😉 Ok I will have to callhim flutey boy in upcoming posts 🙂 Good one Paula!

LOL Cindy! I played recorder when I was at school.. sooo that explains why my mother is the way she is 😉 – joking joking! my mother is great 🙂
Cindy did you show your that scene with the flute? did you remind her of her recorder playing days??!! tee hee..

        2. Cindy, I was an elementary music teacher for 12 years and I taught recorder to 6th graders. I didn’t let them take them home because I knew they’d forget to bring them back on music days (they were on a rotating schedule). I also knew they’d drive everyone nuts with their “practicing”. Lol

  12. Baron Von Snob looked familiar to me so I IMDB’ed him and he was also Sandor Szavost in Eyes Wide Shut. I absolutely love the chemistry of the baddie trio Baron, Inga and Mr. TinFlute. Makes me almost forgive the gaping holes in the logic of the plot.
