Back to Larner’s office at IFF..
Hooo haaaa.. it’s time for Lee and Amanda to do a little role play! They have always ‘play fought’ well together!!! Remember: Amanda was moving up to Tweezers!! Love Bobbie Buchard.. one of the best smk baddies ever! His mommy would be proud! 🙂
Anyway, back to spiderweb.. As they enter the office, Lee has a very firm grip on Amanda’s arm – it looks like Lee has nabbed her! Lee greets Margaret: tell Mr Larner we’re here please.
Drat.. we only get glimpses of Lee and Amanda’s expressions here.. but it is funny.. LOL I think they’re having fun
Larner exits his office: Scarecrow? Alright?
Lee: As planned.
whoa.. this close up shot of Lee looks like it was filmed a different time.. his hair is suddenly more flat, short and styled! [a lot like how it is in A little Sex a little Scandal!] but.. I must say I love that tie – and we only see it for less than a minute!
Also, I don’t know why Larner is asking how it went.. wasn’t Francine telling him on the teeny tiny walkie talkie?!
Amanda: General Kuragin is downstairs sir.
Hooray Amanda!!
Hello Larner?? they won’t even let Amanda be a trainee because she isn’t good enough?? Larner needs to fix that- now!!!
Margaret’s face falls.. uh oh..
Whooo another mention of random agents!!! These make me laugh! Lee: Devereaux and Peterman have begun their debriefing (of Kuragin).
Why does ‘Peterman’ sound familiar?? Have we heard that name before?Hmm..
Sooo.. they nab Margaret.. Only I don’t know why she is under arrest for espionage – should be murder also!!
Margaret’s indignant act is nauseating.. I’m glad she doesn’t keep that up for long! and I am glad Margaret stopped Amanda’s ‘how could you?’ pleading! ugh!!
Although.. um she does end up telling her why anyway. How ironic.. Margaret answers her alright!
Ouch!!
Larner tells Lee: Get her out of my sight!
Lee: come on.
He takes Margaret away for good! good riddance!!
I hope after that little performance of Margaret’s, Amanda has finally grasped the concept that this wasn’t personal – and wasting energy wondering how Margaret could have done this to her is a waste of precious emotional energy.. Time to move on Amanda and expend those emotions more fruitfully.. and she does!.. immediately! Amanda is very gracious with Mr Larner..
Amanda: I’m really very sorry sir.
Larner: So am I, Amanda. So am I.
Larner calls Amanda by her first name here.. that’s significant I think.. better than ‘ the king woman’ or ‘Mrs King’ I think he’s apologising for doubting her also (ie. he’s not just sorry about Margaret).. I just get this vibe from the tone of the moment.. Amanda’s shrug and quiet smile to me feels like an: ‘apology accepted.’ (It wasn’t personal! right Amanda?!)
Do you think this Mr Larner was going to be in the show more often? but he got a better offer from Macgyver???!!! I do think Dr Smyth is an awesome top boss though – his dialogue is fabulous and having such a menacing top dog brings an interesting contrast to Billy’s more teddy bear persona! That and Francine the cow equals a whole zoo!![Looking forward to getting to Dr Smyth’s dialogue in season4!]
Back at IFF, must be the next day…
… and the first thing we see is Lee looking down, concentrating on his typing while Amanda is smiling at Lee, and licking her lips
Amanda seems to be thinking: hooray! Lee is being really sweet and helping me, I’m not in trouble with that agency – things are great!
Tee heee can someone explain to me why Lee is typing up Amanda’s history and ‘helping her’?? He’s typing her record on the ‘Interoffice Memo’ letterhead too! LOL!
Why can’t she do it herself and have him check it? It can’t be that he has to be the one to do it, not her – because at the end of the episode he asks her to finish it up alone..
Still, it is funny to see Lee try and keep up with her busy chatter…
…he suddenly realises he is typing about teeth!
haa!! yes teeth! teeth are very important! 😉
LOL I don’t think BB is actually typing anything.. I think they just added in the noise later!
How old was Jamie in 1978? anyone good at this chronology stuff? I stink at it.. but.. there does seem to be a continuity boo boo with the teeth/braces- I think KJ did a boo boo there… Jamie does end up with braces eventually.. [or am I getting confused?]
Amanda picks up on Lee’s teeth fatigue and suggests they have a coffee break.
As they walk over, Amanda enquires: Did we err you get any good information from the General?
Did you notice Amanda corrected herself when talking to Lee here?? The script has her correct it from ‘us’ to ‘you’ .. Ahhh Amanda.. I don’t think Lee would have corrected her now!
[Where does Lee keep his coffee cup these days? Plastic cups eh??] Lee and Amanda are joined by Larner.. all the loose ends seemingly tied up… except….
Amanda: well there is just one more, tiny little thing….
Larner: Really? What’s that?
Amanda: Well sir, you know that $50 000 that was deposited into my bank account? [Larner nods]… that was American money was it?
Love Lee’s initially puzzled look at hearing this question! He turns to Larner to hear the answer!
.. and starts to look worried!!!! I think he has begun to realise where this is headed!! Uh oh!! He’s just hoping Larner doesn’t connect the dots!
Larner: well it was in dollars yes, part of a general operating fund that the Russians set up for Margaret.
Lee nervously smiles at Larner’s response.. phew Larner hasn’t realised yet Amanda still has the money! I might be able to get out of this without him realising!
Amanda: Ohh so that was actually Russian money.
[Here slightly panicked Lee turns to Amanda: Uh oh!! tee hee!]
…they just made it into American dollars before they deposited it into my bank account..ha haaa..
… because you know if that money belonged to our government.. well gee.. I’d give it right back!
Love Lee’s look here.. Ohhhh crap!!!!
Larner: Scarecrow?!!
Amanda: I mean we wouldn’t want to give the Russians all that money now would we?
Lee: well it’s ahhh.. it’s ahhh.. evidence!.. It must be evidence?
Larner: Right. Carry on.
Larner gives Lee a look and exits the bullpen..
Amanda calls to him: oh yes sir! thank you sir!
We hear an interesting little chime version of the smk theme here.. I haven’t heard that before- anyone??
LOL at how Larner just waves his finger at Lee- fix it!!
Lee: ah… Amanda?
Amanda: ha yes? [Amanda asks so innocently!! ]
Lee: could you finish typing in the file update for me?
Amanda:sure, where you going? [devious Amanda!]
Lee: I have to make a quick call to Legal.
Lee leaves quickly, leaving Amanda to enjoy her coffee.. and a giggle to herself.
Amanda: Gotcha!!
Rofl at the little typewriter bing! we hear to end the episode!!! A new line has been started eh!
Love it! Yes we don’t want to give the Russians all that money now do we?!! haaaaa.. wouldn’t it be great if Amanda got a bonus (no more coupon clipping!)
Do you think Lee realised Amanda was playing a trick on him? Watching it this time was the first time I thought Lee realised earlier he had made a mistake – or maybe I should say hadn’t quite finished the job yet! Only when I was going through the screen grabs I noticed it.. but.. I wonder if he doesn’t realise Amanda knew exactly what she was doing?? I don’t see any indication that he does.. but either way, it’s a very cute ending.. anyone? anyone?
The script has Amanda tell Lee: ‘Gotcha!’ before he leaves to contact legal- and the episode ends with them smiling together – So in that version Lee knows.. which ending do you prefer? I prefer for Lee to know Amanda got him- and have him laugh with her about it but what we got was still very cute! Again! Either way.. Fiesty Amanda rocks!!!
Well, what a fabulous episode this turned out to be!! Full of so many significant moments between everyone.. but especially the revealing of the unique trust which now exists between Lee and Amanda I especially relished Lee’s distress at just the idea that Amanda could be someone other than who he thought she was!! and all that jealousy over Bryce Topping?? Fabulous!!!! And.. I do think Lee realised he was sounding jealous here – I think that’s a first!!
Also wonderful for Amanda to have her eyes opened to just how much Lee trusts her now – and how important she is to him… and.. lots of insights into the relationships of everyone at the agency! And Dotty’s fabulous skobunkey rant!!!
What’s your favourite part of this episode??
I believe this episode is suppose to be the last of the long haired episodes for season 2.. The IFF exteriors are now consistently showing it’s heading into winter time.. and the other two long haired episodes- Car Wars and A Relative Situation do not have this season – it is normal tree lined IFF in these episodes (you’ll see).
Plus, in production order, Car Wars was much much earlier in the season.. soooo on this basis – I will be looking at Car Wars next up (even though it aired as Season 2, Episode 18) and then.. A Relative Situation (Season 2, Episode 15) .. then I will go back to airing order! And of course, at some point I’ll put together my episode order and it’s reasoning. long hair short hair long hair short hair just can’t be the correct order
Let me know if you think of anything to inform the episode order! byeeeeee!!! Thanks sooooo much for reading and I’m looking forward to hearing everyone’s comments!!
I never got the end of this episode. For the last 29 years I was thinking that Larner was going to let Amanda keep the money when he said, “Carry on” and then Amanda tells him thank you. I didn’t get the whole call to Legal by Lee. It does make sense now reading the explanation, but for me the writers needed to be a little more obvious. Watching it for the first time at 14 there was a lot that I didn’t get.
Love the ‘play fighting’ in Reach for the Sky and The Mongoose too! Oh and the random agent thing may be something to put in the stats file! I totally agree with your take on the apology from Larner. He is apologizing for doubting her. Oh, and why would the internal paperwork be done on IFF letterhead??
Yes, this is a fabulous episode! I never really realized just how significant this episode really was until you really dug in, IWSOD – which is why I love your blog. My favorite part is the skobunky rant although the “interrogation” comes in a close second.

Regarding the chipped tooth ramble, as I recall there’s a cute line as Larner comes in where he asks how it’s going, and Lee says something about it going slowly but they’re almost done. I always got a smile from that line because I could feel Lee’s pain and it suggests that the tooth is not the only ramble he has had to put up with as he took down Amanda’s story!
I thought this whole ending just confused me because I’m not good on plot points. Glad to hear it’s not just me!

It has never, ever made sense to me that Amanda acts as though she was actually guilty in front of Margaret. At this point, everyone knows Margaret was the one who set Amanda up and Margaret knows Amanda was innocent. If they were trying to trick Margaret into thinking Amanda was taking the fall, Lee should have been acting like he thought Amanda was guilty, but Amanda should be loudly protesting her innocence the whole way.
Instead, Amanda acts like a big scary double agent until they do the reveal with Larner. Margaret would have known right away that something was up.
Also, what if Margaret had a gun hidden in her desk or something? She could have possibly gotten the drop on them and tried to slip out of the Agency before anyone discovered the three people she’d shot in Larner’s office area. They apparently intended to stop any contingency plan Margaret might have with only moral indignation.
For an episode with so many other bright spots, these problems at the end (and the sequence before this one, where the super spies have trouble figuring out the people in the blue van were the bad guys) are kinda goofy.

I took it from her expression that her resentment is less that she’s caught and guilty and more about that here someone who she’s cared about and who cares about her and KNOWS her would actually believe this frame up. So for the time being, her fear is overshadowed by defiance and anger. But I’d have to watch it again to be sure.

A beautiful wrap up to a wonderful little episode that I enjoyed much more this time around than when it first aired (I think I was distracted by the lameo moments in plot).
Which ending do I prefer? I actually I prefer the one that aired where Amanda says gotcha to empty space. I like that she has got her feistiness back and keeping Lee on his toes. The writers are starting to redeem themselves for all the dumb Amanda moments we were subjected to earlier this season. There is a shift in the balance of power and whatever the future holds for Scarecrow and his partner Mrs. King, they are on more equal footing. Hooray!

You know I missed the whole Lee forgot to take care of the money thing. I just thought that look was that he did not want Amanda to get in trouble for it, but your explanation that he forgot to take care of the money does make more sense. Love your screenshots and of course all the comments you make. Keep up the great work!
