1/14 Season Two, Episode 16: The Life of the Party-Scarecrow and Mrs King

Hi Everyone-  I’ve been looking forward to this one!!! Lots of great stuff here!
2.16 LOTP.avi_000078778

2.16 LOTP.avi_000084784Oh I looove this night shot of the Jefferson Memorial.. always happy to see it! I don’t care how much they reuse it! Smile On the other hand.. sometimes reusing exterior shots is a tad too obvious- even for SMK! The next shot we see is an exterior shot of the  Armed 2.16 LOTP.avi_000088788Forces club – where Amanda and Lee met the Colonel for dinner twice in A Relative Situation.. Only this week it’s not the Armed Forces club- Sheesh SMK!! Here it was in ARS:
2.15 A RELATIVE SITUATION.avi_002722389

[If I notice it- it must be obvious!! we only saw a number of scenes on this street a few episodes ago!]

2.16 LOTP.avi_000093693Anyway, inside the first thing we see is a blonde wearing diana wedding dressPrincess Diana’s wedding dress and descending the staircase.. She seems to have already zeroed in on her target! The blonde walks further into the room and we find.. no surprises here- she’s noticed Lee.. standing there in his tux.. looking glorious!!! Only.. they’re at a party and Lee is standing talking to Amanda.. Hmm.. will this ‘lady’ make a move?? She walks past Lee and Amanda.. Lee sees her as she walks past..notices her? Not sure..
2.16 LOTP.avi_000097297

He looks.. and Amanda sees that he looks.. and doesn’t look bothered – I’ll come back to this!
2.16 LOTP.avi_000097697

A waitress approaches Lee and Amanda offering them some finger food..
Maid: Rumaki? [Okay,
Rumaki– I always wondered what it was, so I looked it up!!]
2.16 LOTP.avi_000098798
Lee: Uh, no, thank you.
Maid: Ma’am?
Amanda: No, thank you. Lee, you really ought to try one of those. They’re really awfully good.
2.16 LOTP.avi_000102102
Lee: Oh, I’m sure they are. I’m just not very hungry.

2.16 LOTP.avi_000104904
Amanda: Oh.
2.16 LOTP.avi_000106806
She smiles at Lee accepting his explanation.. We can just make out that Lee gives her a big smile in return – drat this camera angle! Amanda takes another sip of her champagne- the crazy wedding dress ‘lady’ arrives!

Betsy ( flirty): Hi.
2.16 LOTP.avi_000108808
Lee (friendly): Hi.
Betsy: Don’t I know you?
2.16 LOTP.avi_000110810
2.16 LOTP.avi_000112512 Lee: Nnnnnno,…
2.16 LOTP.avi_000114347
… I don’t think so.
2.16 LOTP.avi_000114914
[Don’t you just love Amanda’s expressions here!!]
Betsy: Oh. Well, I’m Betsy Jordan…
2.16 LOTP.avi_000117450
[Here Amanda pulls a face at the very serious and deluded Princess Betsy! You can just tell that Lee can see Amanda out of the corner of his eye and is trying not to react to her!]
amanda gifDefinitely deserves a Gif!! Smile Go Amanda!
Oblivious Betsy continues
: …Buy me a drink?
Lee
immediately looks at Amanda: Ahhhhhh..  Amanda just silently smiles at Lee here as he struggles with how to answer Betsy.. Amanda’s enjoying this! Smile
2.16 LOTP.avi_000119452
Come on Lee get out of this one!! Noooo I”m not going to help I’m enjoying watching too much! Winking smile at least.. that’s my take on them here! Smile I think  Lee should have asked her where the bear is.. you  know.. that TV show BJ and the bear? Winking smile ]
2.16 LOTP.avi_000119819
Amanda pulls another face – come on Lee!! what you gonna do?!!  my she’s playful tonight!! [LOL – compare this to Randy’s reaction to Amanda just being there!!! I know which woman I’d rather be with! Smile ]
Lee: Uh, sorry, [Lee decides to be more blunt]
I’m really not very thirsty. Maybe some other time, huh?
2.16 LOTP.avi_000121054
Betsy: I’ll be here all night…
2.16 LOTP.avi_000124524
… Look me up if, uh…
2.16 LOTP.avi_000126826
…things get dull.
2.16 LOTP.avi_000127827
At this Betsy walks away with her best impression of a sultry seductress! rofl! she’s terrible!!
2.16 LOTP.avi_000128528
Amanda can hold it in no longer and she begins to snort with laughter
2.16 LOTP.avi_000129229
[I love love this cheeky, playful side to Amanda! Smile ] It’s also a little statement: if you’re interested in that then you are ridiculous!!!! Smile [IMHO!]
2.16 LOTP.avi_000130130
Amanda tries to collect herself. she waves off Lee..: sorry! [when an attack of the giggles hits you the worst thing you can do is try to hold it in!! Smile]
2.16 LOTP.avi_000130964
Lee: Amanda.
2.16 LOTP.avi_000131364
[Lee sounds reproachful here.. LOL..but really I think Lee is trying to suppress a smile as he tries not to laugh at Amanda’s behaviour he is suppose to disapprove of Winking smile]
2.16 LOTP.avi_000131631
Amanda: I’m sorry…
2.16 LOTP.avi_000132298
[Actually, I think she’s not! tee heee]
2.16 LOTP.avi_000132932
2.16 LOTP.avi_000133733…Not hungry, not thirsty, and not interested in Betsy Jordan.
2.16 LOTP.avi_000134834You must not be feeling well.

[KJ’s delivery of this line is just awesome!! so funny!!]
I love to watch Amanda as this blonde floozie tries to cut in on some Lee action.. purlease!!! get in line lady!! This Amanda is a bit more like the early Amanda.. who seemed to go into hiding for a while there.. she’s fiesty and assertive!! I’m really enjoying this phase for Amanda.. new haircut or not – I love that she seems to find new confidence in herself at this time in the show Smile Go Amanda!! I just love that Amanda is no longer shocked by these straightforward women (remember her in The First Time?? At the party when women kept approaching Lee? regardless of the fact he was with Amanda?) I enjoy just watching her react as Betsy Jordan asks Lee to buy her a drink.. I love that Amanda now takes it in her stride (this is good progress!), and laughs it off – she takes most things in her stride these days!

It seems to me that Amanda isn’t feeling threatened by Betsy Jordan.. Why?? What do you all think?
Maybe it’s because she knows Lee better and has guessed that he is at the party for the spy biz, not the romance biz..
Does she just not care about women picking up Lee full stop?
Or could Amanda be thinking Lee isn’t going to go for an aggressive blonde?? Let us know what you think!

It seems Lee is not the life of the party this week..
Lee responds to Amanda’s observation that he isn’t himself with a huge sigh! [all these covers and lies wearing you out Lee?!]
Lee: I’m very sorry Amanda…
2.16 LOTP.avi_000139105
We cut to the reverse angle here as Lee takes Amanda by the arm and draws her into the room. [It’s always got to be Lee on the left.. weird!]
2.16 LOTP.avi_0001403062.16 LOTP.avi_000140573
… I know I’m not being very much fun tonight.
2.16 LOTP.avi_000141741
Amanda: Oh that’s alright Lee,…
2.16 LOTP.avi_000142542
… we never have much fun.
2.16 LOTP.avi_000144444
LOL it takes Lee a moment realise what she said.. and then.. he’s not happy!!!
2.16 LOTP.avi_000145111
[Remind anyone else of ‘I don’t want the best I want you?!’ FanQuiz!: Can you remember which episode that line is from?? Smile  ]
2.16 LOTP.avi_000145345
LOL it is even longer before Amanda realises what she just said! haaa!! I love that Lee lets Amanda see he wasn’t thrilled with that turn of phrase! Smile
Amanda: Ohhh well I mean that we’re not really suppose to…
2.16 LOTP.avi_000147380
… I didn’t mean it the way it sounded…
2.16 LOTP.avi_000149349
… I know that I’m your
2.16 LOTP.avi_000151751
[at this Lee gives her a quick look..and motions with his mouth-do you think it means – shhhh!! because he knew what was coming? or was he thinking she was about to say ‘your date’? ] ...  your cover and that you’re on to something. 2.16 LOTP.avi_000152485
[Yes lower your voice Amanda.. that way you can stand reeeeaaaally close to Lee! Smile ] See the waitress? she was a guest at the Armed Forces club last week – rofl.. what are the odds she’d leave the military and take up waitressing in one week? Winking smile [see her?!]
2.15 A RELATIVE SITUATION.avi_000594794
Many of the extras we see in this opening sequence we see again at the later party the agency throws.. I was easily able to spot 4.. without even trying.. anyone want to play spy and find them all.. go for it! but I think that guy with the white hair is in stacks of episodes up till now..
2.16 LOTP.avi_000154854
Anyway, Lee’s behaviour here at the start of this episode is fascinating.. especially when you consider that this episode in production order immediately followed ALSALS! How did that episode end?? With blonde Randy Baby walking out on Lee because of Amanda.. and here?? This episode opens immediately with another blonde joining Lee and Amanda – only this time she makes a play for Lee regardless of Amanda’s presence –
2.16 LOTP.avi_000119586ALSALS.avi_002763363
It could be just a coincidence- but story wise I like to think this is following on immediately from last week – and we are seeing a continuation of the idea that Lee is not as taken with blondes and flirty superficial women coming on to him as he use to be.. [For me I don’t think Amanda’s character would be able to see that at this stage- it’s just a little hint for the audience of what’s ahead for Lee] Smile

Lee confirms Amanda’s suspicions that she’s there for a cover: Yes. Something Big.
2.16 LOTP.avi_000154954
Amanda: right.

2.16 LOTP.avi_000156556
You mean Lee didn’t make that clear before they went to the party?? Lee asked Amanda out and didn’t make it clear that it wasn’t a date??  Winking smile

I like to compare this scene with the embassy scene at the start of Dead Ringer – another party they attended together on the job, where another blonde approached Lee!!
1.14 DEAD RINGER.wmv_000185852
23[funny in that scene I thought Amanda had copied Diana’s bejewelled headband.. 28and in this Betsy Jordan has copied her wedding dress!] Morley I know you are thinking of costumes at the moment.. anyone else?? Feel free to go for it!! What do you make of all these blonde women wearing white????????!!!!!! [does this blow our theory of Amanda looking angelic in white out of the water a little? thoughts?? or LOL is there a post coming up on that sometime soon? Smile ] I know Morley has done a post on Lee’s women up to this point – so that will come up next-straight after this post! 🙂

In Dead Ringer, Lee’s attitude was quite different – he is all weird about Amanda possibly thinking the night was a date!! Smile
63

[I think Amanda is using the same handbag here in LOTP! and.. I love that she is wearing her same old earrings she use to wear before her fashion update- aside from the hugely broad shoulders I think Amanda looks fine – I am guessing that is the ALAGHITMouth black dress she has on under that jacket.. but.. just a guess! sorry I’m diverted by much this post! ]

I think part of what’s happening with Lee here in this opening scene is – he’s preoccupied by the job – This one is a big deal.. he’s edgy, nervous.. he’s looking around the room, not eating etc. because he is focused on the job.. I’m guessing Amanda had sensed this already when he said no to the Rumaki – but it is one reason why she is nonplussed by Betsy Jordan’s moves – watching with a fascination that is unthreatened and good humoured! Smile

I also found it interesting that nothing could capture Lee’s attention- not the food, not Betsy Jordan.. he was so focused on the  job – but what was it that finally caught his attention??  When Amanda responds that they never have fun anyway!!! 1HaHaHa I think this is quite telling!!! What do you think?  That didn’t bother Lee in Dead Ringer! He didn’t care if Amanda had fun that’s for sure! In fact I remember him being a tad annoyed at Amanda for daring to have a man approach her and try to chat her up.. rofl!

I shall finish up here for now.. I’ll pick up right where I left off next time! Looking forward to hearing what you guys think!!! Smile

  1. #2019 rewatch
Greg Morton (aka Jamie) recently wrote an autobiography about being on the show and described that Bruce is so handsome and so magnetic and so TALL that when he enters a room, it’s like the air gets sucked out of it- every head swivels to watch him. I think that the writers and KJ are having a little meta moment here with how often this sort of thing must have happened and how well Bruce/Lee would be at politely escaping unwanted attention.

That said, I think is one of my favourite scenes not only because KJ is really exercising her comedy chops but because it is such a gem of a moment to show that Lee and Amanda are friends. She can tease him with a simple expression made by someone’s back and he has to struggle not to react, but when he does get to react, it’s with his own humor intact and no checking in to make sure she wasn’t offended by Betsy or anything that was said. He doesn’t apologize for Betsy being rude because he knows Amanda knows the type and is confident enough to laugh at it. He doesn’t get mad that she was gurning and trying to make him laugh. They just enjoy a companionable snort of laughter of the Betsys of the world and get right back to work without ever giving her another thought.

When Amanda replies, “Oh that’s all right, Lee, we never have much fun.” It startles Lee because I think he has come to realize that when he brings Amanda along to these work functions, it’s more fun for him than it ever was before.

IMO Betsy Jordan’s necklace looks like a cheap imitation of Arlene Francis’ trademark diamond necklace.

    Yippee!!! Life of the Party!

I posted a lot during my most recent binge-watch marathon, so covered a lot in my comments from late 2018. (Btw, I would encourage you each to read through old comments during our rewatch if you have a chance. They are full of great thoughts and observations!) But, I have to say here…Betsy Jordan. I guess I just can’t fathom a woman who would come up to flirt with a man while he is talking to another woman! It totally baffles me!

Also, this comment about Betsy’s dress from BJo in 2013 had me doubled over 😂:
Actually it also looks like she could be wearing curtains too! Anyone else reminded of Carol Burnett wearing those dark green curtains for her Scarlett O’Hara sketch?
I LOVE Carol Burnett!!!! And that moment is one of her best! Great connection! 😂

  4. LOTP is really one of my favorite episodes of the entire series. I have been watching the series through in revised order, and am well into season 4. And can I say that Season 2 in the past was not ultra exciting to watch for me, but now I find it completely fascinating, especially in revised order, and especially post-Brunettes (early Season 2, even in Europe, is not easy to watch, IMO, but without those episodes, I wouldn’t appreciate a lot about late Season 2 and beyond). And these short-haired episodes….can I just say (I’m going to duck so not go get hurt when people throw things at me) have become my favorites of S2? Yes, even more than Ship of Spies or Lee gorgeous in Europe, this emotionally developing Lee captivates me. And Amanda is at such an interesting place developing professionally, which spills over to her personally also, IMO. Just such an important time in the shaping of these characters. This episode highlights those changes so well, to me, and dare I say even watching Francine here is fun!!!!! (No, I daresn’t (that’s a shout out to you, Joe, no joking around).)

Betsy Jordan’s dress is scary huge. That’s all I have to say about that.

And despite the jacket shininess and short-hairdness of Amanda, I love the comfortable confidence I am beginning to see her display. And the settled spunkiness. I mean, this gal has now shone up Randibaby and Betsy Jordan (wonder if she’s related to Byron Jordan? 😂) to capture Lee’s attentiveness, work or no work. I say Lee taking her as his girlfriend to his uncle in ARS spoke volumes to Amanda and helped her feel a new sense of at ease-ness around Lee, regardless of what she does or does not feel for him emotionally at this point.

  5. Did anyone notice that although Lee is not interested in BJ later on in this scene it is he that turns his head to look at her as the scene opens and she passes behind him. And he does use his flirty voice when he says “Hi.” I bothers me only because I want him to be completely uninterested. Maybe he is in Scarecrow mode, maybe he has an automatic pilot flirt persona that he hasn’t shut off yet. What do you all think? It is obvious that he rebuffs BJ later, but he kind of does draw her in at the beginning.

    1. Yes–the very sexy/flirty “Hiiiii…” bothers me, too (Probably too much, LOL.) Lee–you’re supposed to be making progress here, not slipping. Then again, it’s a sand dune for him I think… two steps forward, one slide back..
I write it off to cover mode, but it still rankles me–a black cloud over this awesome scene. Kind of like in FFFT when he smiles at Francine as she leaves the hotel room–that look should just be for Amanda!!! (Ooops–getting ahead in episode order again, bad KC!)

      1. Yes!!!! so glad you raised this again Morley and Valerie!!

I haven’t checked but I think I asked what people thought of his looking at her.. he does turn his head to look 😦

and I agree.. that Hi is kinda flirty.. but.. here is how I’ve coped (LOL): I think Lee is looking around because he is on the job – so he sees BJ but then he sees her noticing him.. so he looks a bit more.. but he quickly looks away and forgets about her..

The flirty Hiii could be automatic – and might mean nothing.. Lee is on the job, and uses his charm with the ladies.. so I see this as being a reflex – I figured the important thing was he didn’t like her attention and didn’t want it. I was even thinking he could have been surprised that he was approached while with Amanda ( because after all, now he doesn’t discount Amanda as being someone he could be with – whereas in Dead Ringer I think he was not shocked – and he knew her.. whereas with BJ I think he automatically is flirty because he might know her and not remember her.. (Like with Phyllis) when she says don’t I Know you? he realises – Ahhh she doesn’t know me.. she’s just trying to pick up.. go away you annoying woman in a scary wedding dress!’ 🙂 Well that’s my take on it!
Valerie I found a way for me to get rid of a dark cloud over the awesome.. hopefully this might make the clouds gray- if not disappear entirely 🙂

        Bye!

          1. I choose to have selective amnesia on the flirty hi…although I think it’s Scarecrow reflex. He still hasn’t fully committed to the change that is occurring within him. Remember he just kicked Randi to the curb the prior week and he is making inner adjustments. I think it just takes time to change his pattern of behavior that has existed for the last ten plus years.

I got into a pattern with a statement that I used to make when I had younger students. They constantly had stories to tell me and sometimes I would just zone out and would say “oh really” as they would chatter on. I guess one time I must have said it oddly and one of the students repeated it and I realized how I had zoned out on them. It woke me up to what I was doing. Maybe Amanda’s “not hungry…” and “not having fun..” comments woke Lee up a little.

  6. BTW I forgot to say IWSOD mentioned it was odd that Lee always goes on the left of Amanda and how it was weird. I think it relates to BB being left handed (like all the very people are ;)) and how he would guide Amanda with his dominant hand/arm. Just my theory anyway 🙂

    Like

    1. That makes total sense! Can’t believe I never thought of it before – as I am too a lefty. I notice that when I guide my kids around it is always from the same side. You’re a genius, Jenbo!

    2. It actually drives me crazy how he always puts her on his left because I think a real spy would always keep his gun hand free. I suspect it has more to do with their best sides for the camera.

      1. Mommynificent, I am sorry to pick a weird place to say hello, but “Hello!!” I have been offline more than I’d like in the last few months, but life has been really crazy. Anyway, as a relatively recent JWWM follower myself, I have loved seeing all of your comments. I hope you will continue and that you will chime in often during our “re-walk” that we are taking through select episodes while real life is crazy also for Iwsod. There’s a link from the JWWM home page if you want to find out more about it. So glad to have you around! (I love your handle, btw. 😁)

  7. I have no idea if you guys outside the UK have ever seen those toilet roll dolls. They are dolls wearing knitted or crocheted dresses (occasionally fabric) and they sit over the toilet roll to “hide” the item (why I don’t know, not something particularly offending). Hideous. Awful creations. And Betsy Jordan in her dress totally reminds me of one LMAO.
Lee really isn’t feeling well, even when he’s in the job he’s not immune to women. I understand that he could possibly be in work mode but when he met Evil Rita in the Senators office in ALSALS he still found the time for a little flirting. Only eyes for one woman perhaps?! 😉
KJ does as usual such a great job here with her expressions. I like to think she views Lee’s love life with more than a little amusement. It doesn’t involve her, she has no expectations of anything beyond friendship and she’s cool with that. Time to sit back and watch the sport 😉
Eek I think she just trod on Lee’s ego with her comment about having any fun LOL

    1. Ugh, yes, we have those awful toilet roll dolls in the US too. They’re the sort of thing you’d see in the home of a much older person (in my experience anyway) or at an event like the MOTYear contest 😉

I agree with what you say about Lee’s love live and how Amanda views it. Perhaps Lee is sensing that and is trying to get her back to how she was before she arrived at this point. Maybe that’s why he only has eyes for her this night? Or perhaps he’s mesmerized by all the glitter of her solar panel outfit 🙂

      Like

      1. Speaking of her “solar panel outfit” (great description) Does anyone think that is a bit flashy for Amanda? She had sparkles on the dress she wore in Bromfield Hall, but this is so shiny. It is more like the one she borrowed from Francine for Times. I wonder if this is part of her new wardrobe change? And I agree, Iwsod, she is wearing that jacket over her black dress from SAAB.

        Like

        1. It is a bit flashy for Amanda. Even the one in Times didn’t seem this flashy to me, maybe because is was white and a beautiful shade of blue. This one looks heavy and futuristic almost. Very 80’s to me. I wonder what that stuff on the shoulders is.

          Like

          1. I think the jacket is made from lamé. Not that I am a fabric expert but that’s what it reminds me of.
Can’t say I was a fan of the blue and white sequin number in Times either. A little bit of sparkle and glitter…..just not head to toe in it!!!!

And yes, you’re totally welcome for this random, tangential comment on a very old post. I’m helpful like that.

  8. I am trying to figure out all the white dresses… It doesn’t fit with how we view Amanda in white, does it? But I keep thinking it is colorlessness, or a blank canvas type of a thing. Something like that…

    Like

    1. This interpretation is about as philosophical (?) as I ever get: All the white and black in those scenes set up the idea that everything is black and white–no grey, no surprises, life has order–but then depicting Amanda in black and the blonde bimbettes in white–contrary to what we’d think–shows that everything is really not as it seems… there are hidden currents/depths… just like Lee is becoming not what he seems… and the evolving relationship of L & A…
      Ack! I think there’s a reason I never wax philosophical… 😀

      1. I like your thought, KC! Everything is really not as it seems! Maybe that’s why we see Lee in a white jacket sometimes, eh? Keep waxing away….you never know what it might spark with someone else!

  9. I have absolutely nothing original to say here. I agree with pretty much every comment that has come before me. This has always been one of my favorites. Amanda is simply wonderful in this episode. So strong, so confident, and everyone notices it. Even the hair doesn’t get in the way; there is just too much good going on. I think it sets her up for the Amanda we really see blossom in season 3 (MY favorite season) and the one who’s here to stay in season 4.
I remember the first time I saw BJ in the fluffy dress and was just so irritated with her (actually, I used different phrases in my head, but I thought I should keep it PG). However, after watching it tons of times, I don’t hate her at all. I think she is indicative of how Lee’s attitude towards women like her are changing. He just doesn’t care. And she’s just too stupid to see it. And the fact that Amanda just finds it amusing is fabulous.

Can’t wait to see the posts for the rest of the episodes!! 🙂

  10. LOTP! Love this episode!
Princess Di’s wedding dress – too funny! Actually it also looks like she could be wearing curtains too! Anyone else reminded of Carol Burnett wearing those dark green curtains for her Scarlett O’Hara sketch?

Love the smile Amanda gives Lee after he says he’s not hungry. She’s just waiting for the other shoe to drop since she knows she’s part of his cover. Actually she’s his date, not his cover. He doesn’t need her for anything else. So she’s his date but it’s not a date. Geesh, man up, Lee! At least call it a work date or something.

Amanda’s reaction to BJ is priceless. Yes, love this Amanda. Too bad we didn’t get to see more of her. She can’t help laughing (I think) because of the particular woman’s forwardness and her ridiculous ruffly outfit – sorry if that offends! At this point I think Amanda still thinks of Lee as a bit of a playboy, which is why she says what she says about him not feeling well. She’s used to that behavior from him and still expects him behave as he always has. However, I don’t think Lee really is interested in BJ and wants to laugh at her forwardness too. I think he’s past the point of picking up women or getting picked up by a woman while he’s on a work date with Amanda. I think he has enough respect for her and cares enough about her feelings to not do that to her. Amanda just doesn’t realize it yet. I also don’t think Amanda feels threatened by BJ, as you say iwsod, because even if Lee was interested Amanda knows she would just be one more woman for Lee to go through.

LOL about the “we never have much fun” line and Lee’s look at her then her look at him! Does he really think she has fun at these work/embassy/party things when she’s his date but not really his date because he treats her like his cover even though she’s his date? I mean work date? He can really be a bit of a dunce
sometimes. Maybe he things that she must be having fun just because she’s with him.

Great catch on the repeat waitress/AFC patron! Which man with white hair? I see 4!

  11. I love all of your points, KC, and I think each one applies. IWSOD, great spot of the military lady-turned-waitress! I don’t know how you catch all these things.

I think it’s interesting how relaxed and natural Amanda is around Lee here. I think about how I have felt around guys that I’ve had a crush on or have wanted to like me and I definitely would not have been relaxed and amused in a Betsy Jordan-moment like that. This suggests to me that Amanda has moved beyond crush and awe status with Lee and is now seeing him as a very good friend. I don’t see her putting any pressure on herself to look for something more in him. Through the rest of S2 we see this easy friendship developing into an incredibly deep friendship as well, and it sets the stage beautifully for S3 … the tension, the jealousy, the romance. After all, we can see here what Amanda is not seeing … that she and Lee are made for each other. I love how SMK builds a relationship of true substance between the two (with more great moments for this yet to come — yay!) before dabbling in the real romance. Very sweet and a great life message too.

Lee in a tux always seems to increase the number of screen caps! 😉

    1. Tux = More pix. Yep, I can see that. Perfect mathematical equation. teehee
Wonderful, thoughtful posts, ladies. This is just so fun, diving into the world of SMK with thoughtfulness. Thanks again, IWSOD, for starting this blog.

Hey.. you are not complaining about all those Lee in a tux pics I hope?? If you are I might need to suggest you get your pulse checked..:)

I do OD on tux Lee.. I am pretty sure I also OD on any particularly significant or cute moment between Lee and Amanda.. where there are lots of significant expressions! (Like the tag of ALSALS! ) so .. it’s not just the tux 🙂

I 100% agree.. now is a very cruisy time.. no pressure.. just friendship.. acceptance.. and for me it feels like a truce – Ie. let’s just leave things the way they are for now and enjoy it!!! 🙂 Amanda is a smart woman to not pin all her hopes on Lee at this stage of the game.. he is lovely but he isn’t ready to offer what she needs!

  12. Oh I’ve been anxiously waiting to get to this episode. It’s one of my top ones for this season 🙂 disappointed that I’ll leave for vacation before we are through it. I’m not disappointed with vacation though 😉

Funny how you pull out the Princess Di similarities~wasn’t that the style back in the 80’s to copy her?

Amanda is very comfortable with Lee and is not threatened by these bimbos anymore. I love her laughing at what an idiot this GIRL is. I just love Amanda’s (KJ) facial expressions behind her back and Lee trying not to react to them. Just a fabulous opening scene to a fabulous episode IMHO.

Filming Raul is the ep. that line was from.

  13. This is a great scene! I love the interaction between Lee and Amanda here. And KJ’s facial expressions, and Lee’s reactions to her, even the way he “scolds” her for laughing at Betsy Jordan ( or maybe even Lee himself a bit).

All day I have been thinking about this scene (does this surprise anyone?). But I want to respond to it by responding via the Amanda’s journey post and taking into account my theory combined with Iwsod’s ideas. And I have house guests now and don’t have the time to flesh out my ideas…. very frustrating. I am glad it will all be here when I have time. But I have enjoyed reading all the comments.. There are some wonderful scenes in this episode.

  14. I love this scene–it’s a favourite of mine! 🙂
I think Amanda’s sauciness might be due to a combination of things:
    1. She’s sensing Lee’s discomfort/distraction and, being Amanda, is wanting to “lighten the mood”/ground him.
    2. I think she knows full well that they’re working—and didn’t think for a second it was anything but work—but she’s yanking Lee’s chain a little to let him know that she would like to be somewhat in the loop… she knows everything is need-to-know but he could give her a general clue so that she might possibly be helpful—should she be keeping her eyes open, or is she purely cover (this could affect how she acts).
    3. She finds Betsy Jordan completely ridiculous, and I think she’s seen Lee somewhat pulling away from the pushy blonde bimbo type and is giving him some moral support of sorts by letting him know that she thinks the woman is completely ridiculous.
    4. And, of course, Amanda does have a sense of humour and I think this was just too funny for her to sweetly ignore in her Amanda way.

Then again, maybe I’m just reading too much into the whole thing. 😀 ROFL

    1. Hi KC can’t think too much about smk it’s just not possible! 🙂

It could be a case of all the above! I like #1 I hadn’t thought of that.. and it fits her beautifully.. actually.. I love all your ideas!

      1. Or I really am thinking too much about it, and Amanda’s mirth was merely because she was Amandaramble-thinking:
“Oh my gosh! Francine would just looooove that dress Betsy Jordan’s wearing. But I swear it looks familiar, I think I’ve seen it before… Has Francine worn that dress before? Did she bring it back from one of her Paris trips? Oh my gosh! I know where I know it from… Betsy Jordan must’ve gone consignment shopping in London and snagged Princess Diana’s dress. You snooze, you lose, Francine! I guess Paris isn’t everything you think it is… Wait a minute, if Betsy Jordan is Princess Di, does that mean Lee is Prince Charles? I wonder if he has a teddy bear too? No, I think he prefers Barbie dolls–like Randi-baby. Whoa, I’d better ease back on this champagne, or have some more rumaki–I’m getting kinda goofy… ”

OK, OK–the residual itching just got me loopy again. Sorry. It’ll be over in a day or two… 😀

  15. In the words of Amanda in Nightcrawler, this is getting pretty good now. I loved this episode and loved Amanda’s reactions in this opening scene. I think Amanda is still in the “let’s just wait and see about this guy” mode. I think she is still observing and seeing how he reacts to not only her but these other female distractions. Remember how she looked at Lee to see how he was going to respond to Rita’s “lady” question. I think she is just filing all of this away. She’s probably thinking that he’s still not ready, but he’s getting there.

I find it interesting that while Betsy introduces herself, Lee doesn’t bother to tell her his name or introduce Amanda. I think it’s another sign that he really isn’t interested. This Betsy is not only clueless but rude.

Amanda’s comment about him being sick may be somewhat connected to the congestion we hear in BB in the previous episode and I think there is a little in this one. I have to review it again. Also like how Amanda gets him with the no fun comment. At least it gives him pause about his behavior and how Amanda sees it. I think that Amanda probably assumed it was a work assignment instead of a date. By now she is probably used to Lee showing up unannounced and asking her to go to a party at a moment’s notice.

This scene reminds me of one in “The Bodyguard” where this woman sidles up to Kevin Costner and tells him she’s been watching him all night from across the room. He tells her to go back there and keep watching. I fell out laughing when I heard that. It wasn’t what I was expecting. Lee is kind of doing the same thing here, the unexpected and it surprises Amanda a little. I think it is a pleasant surprise as well. More good stuff to come.

  16. This is one of my favorite funny moments in the entire series. Lee really didn’t like that comment, did he? I think he’s beginning to enjoy being with Amanda a lot more, and he’s hurt that she might not feel the same way. (Shades of “I Am Not Now…”, I think.)

    1. I agree, debilyn. I think Lee does look a little hurt by what Amanda says. I think he is starting to enjoy being with Amanda more but she still expects the same behavior from him.

      1. I agree with everyone who said that Lee is changing but Amanda hasn’t noticed it yet. She has found the comfortable place of friendship with Lee and that is working for her. But Lee is beginning to move past simple friendship with Amanda, I think, but he is VERY slow to let her know, I think he is slow to let himself know.

        1. I’ve been watching a lot of S2 episodes lately and it seems Lee really does start to treat Amanda differently after BAI. He really does start to treat her like he genuinely cares for her. He’s much nicer and considerate. Or maybe I just think that because I’m jumping around and not watching them in original airing order. It’ll be fun to see how you put your S2 episode order together, iwsod!

          1. A major chink in Lee’s armor occurred during that episode, didn’t it? In fact I think he just plain took off the breast plate. Things happen fast for Lee after that, I think. It shows me how desperately he felt the need to protect himself, because once he opened up to let Amanda in as a partner, he began to let her in in other ways too pretty rapidly after that.

  17. I’m loving Amanda’s reaction to Betsy Jordan (how more obvious can you get?) I wonder if Betsy figured out that Amanda thought the whole situation was laughable — double whammy! Not only did Betsy not get Lee to buy her a drink, but more importantly, did not make Amanda feel insecure or marginalized which was the whole point of the encounter (IMHO).
