1/15 Season Two, Episode 17: Odds on a Dead Pigeon-Scarecrow and Mrs King

2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000080747Odds on a Dead Pigeon opens with some lovely pics of Washington DC… Is that dude on top a dead pigeon??!!
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000091758One of which highlights some lovely fall foliage.. only.. it’s been winter in smk land for at least the last three episodes! aie!!!

[I don’t think this signals the wrong episode order.. these shots tend to be a bit haphazard IMHO]
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000109275Anyway, the episode opens with a large building.. Umm I know I’ve seen this exterior before somewhere..but can’t think where! and.. I’m not going to go searching! [One of those tempting rabbit holes!] Anyone want to hunt it down? If not- never mind! we’ll just keep an eye out for it in future!

Now this bar though? I know where I’ve seen 2.13 SPIDERWEB.avi_000236069this before!!! this is the bar in Spiderweb- Same cash register!  – It  got shot up! Also A Relative Situation too I think?! Smile

Boy this bar gets a work out..
This week we again have two dummies! Sitting in a booth- Amanda(?) and some guy who isn’t Lee!!!
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000127293
Guy who’s not Lee: I still can’t believe this is happening!
Amanda(?):
hmm I really can’t believe it either.
Wrong guy: I always thought you and Lee-

Amanda(?): No nooo. Lee and I-
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000133800
At this Amanda stops and reaches over to kiss this wrong guy! Winking smile ugh… She kissed him??!! Ok.. ok.. I can’t pretend I haven’t seen the episode.. but I can only imagine if someone scared0016hadn’t that at this stage they would be screaming at the TV!!
The Anti-Amanda continues: no.
Larry [Okay, script says his name, I may as well use it! Winking smile] :
Look, Amanda-
Anti- Amanda: look, why don’t you just give me the key and I’ll go on up and then you can follow behind me.
smiley-scared001
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000140807

Oh my.. I wonder what all the kiddies made of this opening.. I think they toned it down slightly to the script.. but still!
Larry looks around to make sure he’s not observed and hands the Anti-Amanda the room key and she reads the room number..
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000148815
Amanda: 505  [LOL! SOS!!!]

Wow.. Anti-Amanda doesn’t muck around! She smiles, takes her coat and heads up to the room… Larry watches her leave with a ‘I don’t believe my luck!’ kind of look.. seems too good to be true buddy?? ha!
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000158825
I must say- I prefer the way the last episode opened! Lee in a tux..  [Does anyone not skip this opening when rewatching this episode?!]

2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000181848We follow Larry up the hotel corridor.. okay get on with it.. yawn..he comes to room 505  and Anti-Amanda opens the door to him..
Anti-Amanda: Hi.
Larry enters the room wordlessly.. I think he still can’t quite believe this.. whatever it is!
I must say the short hair, and grey cardigan don’t scream sex kitten tryst in a hotel room..
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000203370
smiley-scared001Okay, I did not want to post that last pic! but.. I posted one of Lee and Eva (yuck!) so fair’s fair.. Two kisses?? and this time with a bit 3_ImNotListeningof noise to go with it?? eww.. nope.. don’t want to watch or listen!!  I only want to see (and hear) her kissing Lee!! ok ok.. I know it isn’t really Amanda.. but it looks like her so that’s bad enough, and I guess if you didn’t know it you would be really mad about now..
Larry: when I ran into you today I… (he glances over at the bed)
…never thought we’d  2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000215382ah..
Anti-Amanda: well I.. I didn’t either.

[ this is so wrong.. seems  this Amanda is putting the guy at ease about a lousy one nighter! 😉 ]
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000218385Wrong guy Larry: There’s really nothing between you and Lee?
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000220387Amanda: no there isn’t anything between Lee and me…

How would the real Amanda have responded to that question?
What do you think???
The only interesting thing about this for me is this guy seems to have been assuming there was something going on between Lee and Amanda! but how Amanda answers? don’t care.. since I know it’s not really Amanda!
He continues:
…you only seem to work with 2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000225892him.. at least in the field and I assumed errr??
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000228395What? he’s asking for a third time? aie!! So that is why he thought they were an item? because they 1facepalmalways work together? I find that a bit.. Meh!!! I would have rather he’d said they seemed so close or something.. but to me this just seems to be the old ‘men at the agency making lots of assumptions about women at work’ thing.. which by now you all know I am NOT a fan of! [Okay go ahead.. try and talk me down! Winking smile ] Breathe iwsod.. ha!
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000231398Amanda: No. There isn’t anything between me and anybody else…. 2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000231898till now..  [Sucker!!]
Ugh Larry moves in for another kiss.Three?
1yuckugh… Just listen to that sweet ‘this is true love’ music selling us the lie! ugh!!! Winking smile When Lee and Amanda kiss? I’m not noticing the music Winking smile  Is there music? who knows.. who cares! 😉
I’ve had enough.. someone shoot this guy! 😉
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000245412
Larry starts to get undressed: Funny isn’t it.. [whooo he has a gun on.. definitely an agent!] …the way things happen. [such a coincidence running into her?! Not!!!]
Anti-Amanda takes his jacket for him, and watches him remove his gun shoulder holster.. she takes it off him declaring:
I don’t like these much.
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000249916
[right.. so that’s why you took it from him and carried it across the room? I think the real Amanda at this point would prefer not to touch it at all. what am I saying? the real Amanda wouldn’t even be in this stupid room.. come on.. shoot the guy already! 4 minutes of the episode gone already! ]
Larry responds: They can come in handy [How ironic, he’s about to find that out first hand! Winking smile ]
The Anti-Amanda takes the jacket and gun and sits on the bed with them..
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000256923
Oh my.. I do believe those curtains and that bedspread matchy matchy! Winking smile
Larry: I remember the first time I saw you at the agency.. I was just in from Madrid (he
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000260927undoes his tie.. and the Anti-Amanda picks up a pillow and lays it in her lap.. Hmm right.. near.. that.. gun!] ….I remember you looked soooo lost! [I guess this line highlights for us how Larry has let his guard down so quickly with Amanda.. At this we see Anti-Amanda smile – the gun now under the pillow on her lap] When was Amanda lost at the agency?? He must have seen her at a brief moment.. I don’t think she was typically lost looking – okay maybe he saw her when she found out Lee had resigned and was now selling guns! Smile
Amanda: haa well I guess I was lost..
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000262929
Larry: but not anymore.

2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000263930[Do you think this is referring to Amanda in her early years and now she is more accomplished?? or is he referring to the beginning of their love affair? I know which understanding I prefer!]
Anti-Amanda: No, not anymore.
Larry: I almost said something to you then but you were with Lee. you were always with Lee!
I said to myself: Credle… [that’s his last name]
…this is a hands off situation.1facepalm
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000271938Hmmm.. interesting!!
Anti-Amanda gets off the bed, the pillow still in front of her:
I guess it really is funny how things turn out.
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000278945
Smiling sweetly – she shoots Larry through the 2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000281614pillow. do I feel lucky!LOL.. Larry takes a dive, got shot in the chest.. and 2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000282415there’s no blood.. ahhh smk.. I love it!

Cue cold, evil looking Amanda!!!

This Amanda’s countenance is altered immediately

2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000282682
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000287454– all the sweetness and Amanda qualities are gone! KJ must have had the time of her life playing this episode! 1baddie speaks
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000288955
Does anyone know if KJ has played any baddies in any other roles?
Do you think KJ said to the producers: Francine got a doppelganger ep- I want one!!!! I remember seeing one on Hart to Hart.. was there one in Remington Steele?

I guess Larry didn’t know Amanda that well – or he would have known she wouldn’t go off for an afternoon tryst with a guy she hardly knows (well I don’t think she would- correct me if I’m wrong!)

On to the agency, and Billy can’t understand it!
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000297464Billy: he has an apartment over on G street. What was he doing checking into a Washington hotel at 3 in the afternoon???!!!

2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000299466LOL.. leave it to Francine to explain! : Oh come on Billy! what do you think he was doing?!
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000302469
Billy: unless I read the man completely 2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000306473wrong it’s.. out of character… [my goodness.. Billy’s pretty worked up!] …Credle was married! 1OMG1angry [2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000309476What?????!!!!!! Okay, now I’m worked up!!!!!
Good riddance to the idiot!

…He wasn’t a player was he Lee?
[Oh yes, Lee has sized up all the rival players at the agency.. ahem.. this episode is pretty cringe worthy so far for me! can it get any worse?? ]
1facepalm
Lee:  ah.. Not really.. at least no more so than the average guy. 1OMG1angry1argh
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_0003109772.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000314981

Whaaaaatttt????!!!!!!!!
1surprise.. what the.... I did not hear that.. I 3_ImNotListeningjust did not hear that!!!!! Is that what you are going to tell Credle’s wife Lee???!!! nope.. not happy.. I am shocked this ep wasn’t written by a man! Ugh!!
I like men who treat women well! This?? this is not ‘average’!!
phew!!! Am I in a mood with this episode!!!

I’m hoping using lots of emoticons will perk me up! grrr.. do I feel lucky!

peace-surrender

chill pill

  hippy
Maybe I should just write this post in emoticons and pics? Winking smile

Don’t worry.. I think it starts off a bit icky here but ends fabulously!! Smile  I comfort myself with the thought that Lee is still learning about real love – and he one day comes to realise Amanda deserves better than an ‘average’  man – if that is ‘average’! double ugh..breathe iwsod… you all breathing?? gosh.. maybe it’s just me who finds this all a bit icky!
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000315482Lee continues (and I have calmed enough to continue! Winking smile ) : … but then again, neither was Treloggen [Aha! whoooo  there’s a shout out to Abby Treloggen the show’s music editor! I wonder if she minded being a murdered agent?! Winking smile I wonder if Treloggen was married too??!! ]
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000317484Billy the genius:
I’m sensing a pattern that I really don’t like.

Roll on the floor and laugh my flippin butt off!!
1rofl Just look at what Billy is looking at when he says that line:
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_000318985
Check out all those patterns!!!1surprise.. what the.... Lee is having a fashion pattern emergency.. dotted tie, stripy Fashion police badge2shirt and plaid jacket? guyliner??? ugh!!! I’m with Billy- I’m sensing a pattern here that I don’t like! 1HaHaHa[not even on Lee- and that’s saying something!] Amanda is matchy matchy.. and Lee is no matchy matchy? running_happy

Well I shall finish up there for the moment..this opening has sent me slightly bonkers..  So far this is a very unusual episode! I usually skip this beginning [I think I’ve probably only watched it once- with one eye open]  but walking through the episodes I want to take it all in this time.. the good, the bad and the utterly cringeworthy! Smile I’d really love to hear your thoughts on this!! Anyone else with me?? Please?? eek!!! Smile Looking forward to getting to the better parts! byeeee!

  1. Wow..i think it’s great you are rewatching SMK with your son👏👏I couldn’t convince my teenage daughter to do so. I’ve rewatched SMK and watched my favourite episodes more than once too. And i too have to agree with your boy that this hairstyle was just OUT.

  2. Randomandaramble alert:
So I commented a couple of episodes back that my 12-year old son and I are rewatching the series (in revised order). And I also commented on his not commenting at all about Amanda’s hair-don’t when it first appeared, which I found fascinating. BUT! He did finally sweetly say “I don’t think I like her hairstyle” in this episode. 😉 He also really, really disliked this episode and it creeped him out – he said it was his least favorite this far. Interesting.

But we were able to have a really good conversation earlier today about Lee and Amanda’s characters, what we know about their backstory at this point, how that would affect their entering into relationships with people around them, including each other. Who knew I’d be doing character studies of Lee Stetson and Amanda King one day with my son!!! 😁

  3. How well I remember this…

This was the very first episode I got to watch in English. And also without knowing what was going to happen. I had no idea what to expect, but when what looked like Amanda kissed that guy, I almost yelled “Hey, that’s the wrong guy!” And when she shot him, I nearly swallowed my teeth.

  4. Gosh…so many posts, I couldn’t get thru all of them, so if I repeat a thought, bear with me. Where do I start???? When I first saw this ep I was in shock and disbelief thinking that Amanda was having a “thing” with this creepy guy….Even though I knew it wasn’t her style, I just couldn’t figure out what was going on. I remember how uneasy I felt watching her make kissy face with that creep…THEN……she shot him and the light bulb came on…and I felt better…wait a minute……a guy gets shot and killed, and I feel better?????? OMG….I’m in over my head at this point….I realize I am way too involved with these make believe people….this show is taking me down a rabbit hole fast!!!!
Now for Lee’s comment about the guy not being a player anymore than the average guy…what????? This is acceptable behavior in the world of spys???? Gosh, Amanda should have heard him make that comment , she could keep a closer eye on him in season 3 and 4 when things started to get more serious between them…..MEN…..

  5. The whole idea of Amanda taking off with some guy she barely knows for an afternoon tryst was so ridiculous, I knew something was up. Originally I think I thought she was undercover. With all the men you see interested in her over the years I don’t recall her ever ending up in the bedroom with any of them. I really only picture her ever being with Joe and Lee. I think maybe she was intimate with Dean because it mentions in one episode they took vacations together, and in another episode he has clothes at her house, but that just seems so boring that it wouldn’t even count. Whatever.

I don’t think hands off means only scarecrow can canoodle with the women at the agency, I just think it means Larry thought Amanda was with Lee so she was hands off. I think the men at the agency at least had some respect for each other, even if they didn’t always respect the women. You think Larry’s wife would make Amanda hands off. But I guess he was being average.

Okay the line about the average guy basically being a hound really bugged me too, but I just try to put into context. Ticked me off that Lee talked about it like it was no big deal(would’ve been singing a different tune if he knew Larry went to that hotel to be with Amanda), but you have to take into consideration the kind of world Lee lives in. He is surrounded by criminals and liars and no one is ever who they seem. I imagine his opinion of people is not that high. And after some of the things he has seen and the kinds of people he’s dealt with, a married man fooling around a little is probably far from the worst of it. Doesn’t mean he thinks it’s okay.

And it sure is interesting that almost everyone who sees Lee and Amanda together thinks they have something going on. Like it’s obvious to everyone but them. Gee guys maybe it’s the way you are alway smiling at each other, and the looks you are always exchanging, the way you stand so close, and are always touching. Reminds me of that song Something to Talk About. Maybe someone should do a vid to that song. If I knew how maybe I would.

  6. IWSOD asked, “Does anyone know if KJ has played any baddies in any other roles?”
I watched “Empty Cradle” a made for TV movie in 1993. Talk about a really creepy character, Rita Donahue played by Kate Jackson, is a nurse that kidnaps a baby from a hospital nursery. KJ is amazing!!

    1. Actually, yes. It’s kind of a spoiler telling you this, but she was a villain in a mystery movie called Death Cruise from 1974. I found it awhile back on Youtube.

      1. Thanks Jestress and Jeanine for answering my question! I’ll have to keep an eye out for those. Death Cruise.. rofl! what a name!!! I wonder if there were any references to it in Ship of spies? 😉

I think I may have seen Empty Cradle Jeanine.. sounds familiar.. I probably blocked it out because I admire KJ so much 🙂
        Thanks again!

        1. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen Death Cruise, and I don’t recall a lot of the details. Basically, the plot was that three couples supposedly won free trips on a cruise ship but it turned out to be a ploy to lure them onto the ship in order to kill them. I can’t remember what the motive was for the murders. I like mystery movies, but for some reason, this one didn’t stick in my head well.

Thanks Jestress! sounds interesting!! if I see Death Cruise on the tv schedule I’ll be sure to catch it! 🙂 btw loved loved loved your Dean letter – sorry I didn’t say earlier ] why don’t you post it again on Nedlindger’s – It sounds like there is lots of discussion to be had about Dean! 🙂

If anyone would like to do a post about Dean let me know – he’s an interesting character!

            1. I haven’t registered yet for Nedlinger’s, but I’ll look into it. 🙂

I was thinking about the letter earlier today, and in spite of the fact that it is one of the worst things I’ve ever written (or maybe because of it), I’m thinking of making it part of one of my longer stories. I can think of a moment where it would be really funny to fit it in. 😀

But, it will be after Halloween before I can finish that one. I usually have about three or four projects going at once, and there’s something else I’ve got to do first.

  7. I’m bummed I missed commenting when this post first went live!! But I want to add my thoughts anyway.

I have a vague recollection of the first time I saw this episode; of watching in horror as Amanda is making out with this other agent who is clearly not nearly as good looking as Lee and thinking that it had to be a nightmare and when was she going to wake up? Anti-Amanda? LOVE IT! This is not one of the scenes in the series that I skip when watching. Yeah, it’s icky, I know it’s not really Amanda so I can get through it.

Hmmm, how would the real Amanda respond to the question of there being nothing between her and Lee at this point…I’m thinking she’d only say something about them just caring for each other as much as good friends but nothing more. It is interesting that everyone who sees Lee and Amanda peripherally always thinks that there is something going on between them. They must see something! It must be all the looks they give each other when they’re not looking and are not on camera – hahaha!

Another lovely SMK lamp we can see behind Amanda as she’s sitting on the bed…where do they get these things??

Hands off situation – LOL – guess the other agents aren’t allowed to mess around with the females at the agency – just Scarecrow.

Yeah, that “no more so than the average guy” line sucks. What does that mean? Lee really does know everyone in DC, including all the players and what their “average” is. I’m guessing Lee’s got a higher than normal average??? Ugh. Makes you wonder just how great a working environment it was at the agency for the women who weren’t agents. No wonder Francine is such a witch.

  8. Wow, I miss a few days and have a lot to catch up on! Glad to have you aboard, Jestress!

As to the “average guy” Lee refers to – unfortunately, I remember a poll in the late 70’s which suggested that a large percentage of married men had had at least one affair. I remember thinking that I certainly didn’t know that many (though I did know a few). Wife-swapping was a term that was thrown around a bit at the time, as well, but I didn’t know any of those. Sad, I know. Bad men.

I remember thinking something had to be wrong with Amanda for her to act like that. At first, I thought she was undercover for some reason. Then, I thought “this is just wrong, maybe she’s been programmed.” I remember being almost relieved when we found out it wasn’t really her. (I think KJ must have really enjoyed this episode, too.)

    1. Finally! I get to respond to some comments.. in busy stressful times – I think that’s when it’s even more important to make time for smk and my smk friends Smile Oh my!! 35 comments on the first post of this ep?? Here I was thinking everyone might opt out because the intro is so depressing! 🙂 I’m so glad you’re all hear with me for the ride!

Melissa R, thanks for sharing your enjoyment of the post! It was a huge relief to me to see someone had had some fun! I really didn’t know what to make of the opening of this ep! [and it’s a shame to open an ep with disappointment!] Sounds like we have a similar sense of humour.. very visual! 🙂 I’m discovering Jenbo and KC over at Nedlindger’s do also – with their fabulously random smk Memes! 😆 Keep em coming!!

Hiya Cindy! LOL I can just picture you getting more and more confused! kissy face? rofl! yes I’m sure that’s how you described it back in the day haaaa.. happy memories of Amanda shooting some guy huh! 😉
Good on Remington Steele for not going with the ridiculous identical twins idea for it’s main characters – having it be a guest star makes it more errr believeable? Whereas.. heck.. smk isn’t afraid to go for it – they’ve done it twice now! haaa!

Kgmohror I can only hope BB protested at that line.. I think if KJ had been in the room she would not have allowed it! She was good at keeping the integrity of characters! Thanks for explaining about Don Galloway – I mean’t to ask and forgot.. but I noticed he was credited as a ‘Special appearance by’ – I was wondering why! rofl.. I kind of agree with him.. that death scene of his with the dive over the chair was pretty over the top! I don’t think Amanda finds out about the previous murders or trysts.. I hope she doesn’t! we’ll see!

Morley wearing her thinking cap is most welcome!! 🙂 LOL.. glad it is not only your wonderful brain engaged Morley.. but your funny bone also! 🙂 Lee’s clothing choices.. hmm why dont you just skip the eps and catch up to where we are up to??? could be fun to explore as we progress- sorry I got a head start on you!! 😉
Yes I agree ‘knowing someone’ is definitely a major theme of this episode!
I didn’t see any significance in the different style jacket- but I’ll keep an eye out.. I just put it down to it being winter time in smk land still.. or changing fashion (as it does seem to be more fashionable by season 4 time ugh..). but I do agree that his fashion eventually becomes more relaxed..

Thanks for tracking down the Statue of freedom Morley.. guess the bird that poos on it is a dead pigen! yes.. dude looks like a lady! haaaa. KC I figured that’s what LASinLA was getting at – you were thinking along the same lines! haaaaa..

Hiya Jule! haaaa thanks for letting me know you had a laugh- I love that Smile makes me feel better about this opening.. it’s a bit of a drag!

Here here Jenbo.. Married Credle getting killed while cheating on his wife?? all you husbands thinking of cheating: watch and learn!!! she could be an assassin!!!!

I don’t remember this episode very well KC, so I guess it’s not a favourite, though I keep hoping I will come around to it and enjoy.. so I haven’t given up hope on it just yet – hang in there.. maybe together we’ll enjoy the bits we like! 🙂

Haaaa thanks for sharing your thought processes KC, sounds like you and Cindy and Valerie were doing some mental gymnastics to make sense of this opening!

      Sledgehammer??!!! Loved Sledge!
True KC, Lee is super protective.. I would have preferred Credle had said something like that – rather than you always work together.. ugh..

Hmm it’s interesting to hear all your takes on the dreaded ‘no more so than the average guy’ line which is truly awful.. though I think I’ve managed to get my head around it –barely!
I won’t shoot you Morley ;).. no shooting allowed on JWWM! – we can just disagree haaa!! Lee’s comment doesn’t shock you? fair enough! I think you are on to something with your explanation Morley.. I can go with that.. but I still find it a shocking line anyway! I agree with Jule, definitely deserves a time out and then a talking to!
The writer was Juanita Barlett Jenbo, who is famous for The Rockford files..by this stage she was a mature woman.. I saw a pic of her once with the Rockford files gang.. Juanita if you are reading can you explain yourself please??>??!!! haaaa I’m just kidding..

Jestress, I’ll just say again: you are so right.. three cheers for Billy!!! It is a little beacon of hope here isn’t it!

What you say makes sense Valerie – about what’s going on with Lee and his cringe worthy comment.. I can go with that too.. Heck I can put it all together [Yours and Morley’s ideas]! It does kind of make sense.. though I hoped Lee at this stage had moved beyond that – he’s not quite there yet.. he’s too jaded..

We are only half way through this scene so I won’t go into more detail other than to say Lee and Francine are the jaded worldly view here.. and Billy is the view of hope.. Lee has lived in the real world and knows life is not rose coloured (he says something about that in service above and beyond- someone help me?) –Amanda helps him see a better way – but he isn’t quite there yet.. so I’m putting it down to Morley’s explanation of washington and your take on Lee’s history Valerie! phew.. I can put that one away.. though heck.. I will never be comfortable with that line- and not sure I am suppose to be! Something coming up in this scene plays into it so I’ll come back to it in the next post..

Yes Jule.. smk is real.. 😕 Lee is real.. 😕 got that straight?
Now shove over and make room for me in the loony bin! 😕 😕 😕 I’ll bring marshmallows.. I hide them.. so no one can replace me after some miraculous surgery.. ahem..

Whoo Jestress that’s a great point- Lee and his take on ‘Average’ – hold that thought – I’d love to hear what you think of the next part of this scene!! [shame I had to split it.. but alas.. ]

Ahhh thanks KC and Christy for clearing up where I’d seen that building! [Christy, KC mentioned ‘ALLA’ which stands for A Lovely Little Affair – that’s the ep you described with the art restorer.. 🙂 ]

How we going on that ‘lost’ line?? I had two suggestions in the post…. I thought today- maybe Credle thought she looked lost because she didn’t look like she belonged there: she wasn’t typical agency.. so it was more about how he saw her, than how she actually was.. maybe? oh well.. whatever! The script doesn’t give us any clues either.. but I did think it played into Credle’s underestimating Amanda and letting his guard down here.. suffer Credle the Cheatle! [real mature of me.. I know.. ahem.. ]

      I was thinking Nedlindger’s needs a loony bin section! haaaaaa see you there KC, Cindy, Jule, Christy!!! .. oh boy.. we are gonna have fun with the next ep!! {Delirious on Arrival!}
      – anyone want instructions for joining in on smk memes? email me at: iwsod@optusnet.com.au and I’ll forward the instructions.. Jenbo you have aced it- you sure you haven’t done Memes before?!!.. I’ll take this over to Nedlindger’s!! byeee everyone!!!
[Hope this isn’t too confusing a way for me to reply.. I preferred this way to have you having 10 comments from me listed down the side of the homepage! ]

Iwsod–that’s what I was trying to get at with my reply to your reply to Morley. Not that she was actually lost but that others observed her on the outside looking in…

  10. I was wondering what everyone thought of the comments about Amanda being so “lost” when Credle first saw her. I am just wondering if this is supposed o allude to Amanda’s new professionalism…?

    1. Hiya Morley – and everyone!- I have a headache and have had a huge day…I really need to get away from the computer! sooo I won’t get to respond to comments properly today -sorry!! – and there were lots of fab ones !!

Just quickly.. really glad you asked this Morley I was wondering about this myself! [pretty sure I asked what everyone thought in the post – LOL btw when I ask things like that it’s never rhetorical I love to hear what you guys think! ]

Glad you guys had a giggle.. seems my overcompensation paid off and a depressing intro was not too bad 😉 byee for now..

      1. My take on the lost thing is that she kind of did look lost when she was at IFF the first few times… she was there as an outsider–not as an agent or agent in training–just someone they could use and send away again. She didn’t have a regular desk or space in the Bullpen. She was often excluded from meetings in Billy’s office and had to knock on the window to be let in… (And maybe word got around of her not remembering the password for Mrs Marston–LOL! [Which was stupid ‘cos we know what a good memory she has.])
Actually, I wouldn’t say lost so much as on the outside…???… Hmmmm… I’ll have to think on this more after coffee. 😀

    2. My take on the “lost” comment was that Credle had seen Amanda when she first started working at the Agency and probably did look a little lost. We know from TFTime and TPEnginners that the agency is rather large and a lot of people work there. I used to work for a large corporation at one of their large research centers with hundreds of employees. It was easy to identify the newcomers or visitors in our wing of the building because they didn’t look like they knew where they were going. Sort of like tourists in NY – they all look up. People who are familiar with their surroundings walk with a purpose and look down or straight ahead toward their destination. Those who are new or “lost” definitely walk at a different pace and look all around to make sure they going in the right direction or just to take everything in.

In some ways it also speaks to Amanda’s professionalism. I’m sure at first she didn’t act the same as the majority of the professionals in the building, but the longer she was there and became familiar with the place and people, I’m sure she took on a more experienced air and came across differently – more professional.

  11. This is a documentary series, right?!? I mean, this is real life! Lee and Amanda live just a hop skip and jump across the country and are protecting me from incompetent bad guys. Rigggght?!?! Really, it has to be coz otherwise I am devoting an inordinate amount of time to a fantasy and am a serious candidate for the loony bin. (Get back to your timeout corner Lee and think about what you said. When you can articulate why it was allllll wrong then you may come out!) As I was saying…..uh oh, what are those men with the white coats doing at my door?!?!!? Arrrrgh, helprtewqnfjgutoymh……!

        1. Oh Joy!! Thank you KC and Cindy for keeping me company in the booby hatch. I did not know that the rabbit hole led to a trapdoor (is that the same one to the sub-basement in FR? :)) and on to the loony bin. I seemed to have managed to find my way there without even a map. Okay, I’ll bring the chocolate and fluffy robes and meet y’all there!

  12. Whenever I’ve seen this episode I still remember my first reaction to it. I was like…”hey, what’s going on? Did I miss something? Who is this guy and where is Lee? What about Lee?!?” I remember being a little distraught. I was further confused when she shot him and wondered what was wrong with Amanda.

I’m not trying to defend Lee, but he is still trying to figure out just exactly what normal and average are. He assumed that Amanda was just a normal, average housewife, but he is learning differently. Maybe this situation with Credle is just something that he has gotten used to with how he has been living his own life. This is a man who has been a serial dater, with several black books. Lee doesn’t really know how the other have lives so maybe he assumes certain things. His outlook on life is based on the Agency and the people he works with. Fortunately Amanda has been changing that outlook.

I sometimes wonder what Lee thought the reason was for Amanda’s divorce. He never really comes out and asks her (until later) and he already has decided that she is not the type for an affair, so I wonder if he thought that maybe Joe cheated and that’s why they got divorced, especially if he thinks the average guy cheats on his wife.

I’m thinking that Credle also knew what Lee was like and how he has been around the block a few times and just assumed that he had been around there with Amanda. Credle wouldn’t know that Lee was changing and probably made the same assumptions about Lee.

I remember being in college and having a male best friend. It was assumed that we were dating because we spent an inordinate amount of time together. It couldn’t have been further from the truth, but that was the assumption that people made. It also happened with a male teacher that I was close too. All of the students assumed that somehow during the summer we were going to get married. I think in general some people find it hard to believe that a single man and a single woman can be best of friends.

  13. I would just like to give Billy a round of applause for being righteously indignant at the thought of Credle cheating on his wife. We don’t really see much of Billy’s wife in the series, but I’d say that she’s a lucky a woman. 🙂

Actually, I’ve been lurking around awhile, but I just couldn’t help but comment on that. Lee is also probably the worst authority on what’s “average.” Remember, according to Amanda, he thinks that sunbathing in Borneo is normal. 😀

        1. Welcome Jestress! I agree, Billy is a wonderful person to have running Lee’s section. I love the fact that we have Billy and Emily as the senior agents in he lives of people like Lee and Francine. I don’t thin Credle and Treelogin spent enough time in his section.

  14. 😦 I don’t like this episode. There’s some goodies in it, but ugh! 😦 More on that later…

When I first saw this ep I remember thinking, “Oh, er–Amanda’s kinda forward.”… then when she goes further with the room key, etc, I was thinking “Oh. OK. Amanda’s been drugged.” LOL! Even young me couldn’t envision Amanda in that role.

Bad Lee! Bad, bad Lee! Like Morley said, it was possibly a society/politics thing… but we all believe that Lee has higher morals than that. Hmmmm… it was probably Scarecrow that said it, not Lee. 🙂 (Trying to make myself feel better…) I love the fact that Billy was so astounded and upset–yet another reason to like Billy.

Re: the coat, Morley, yes… he does go more for the thicker/bulkier tweedy sports coats in s3 on… and I was going to bring up the comparison at some point with Sledge Hammer! (Remember that show? ROFL!) Sledge had the same taste in jackets, but much louder ties…

Oh, and as for Credle thinking that Amanda and Lee were an item, I think it wouldn’t necessarily have been an uncommon idea–enough agents would’ve seen Lee acting protective (bordering on jealous or possessive at times) and a bit handsy around Amanda that assumptions might’ve been made… and I’m sure water-cooler gossip was all the rage, even somewhere secretive like the Agency. Maybe even more so!

    1. KC–reporting from the rabbit hole–I forgot to mention before… the building that you asked about, Iwsod, is the hotel that Alan Chamberlain stays at in ALLA. I have a niggling suspicion it might also be in other eps…

  15. I watched this today. I didn’t skip the beginning. I did LOL at anti Amanda and her charming grey cardi. The pink one gets a hole in it in Burn Out doesn’t it 😉 actually the fact that Credle was married meant I am cheering AA (Anti Amanda) for shooting the guy. A player? no more than the average man?! Urgh doesn’t say much for the male of the species. I wonder if the writer was a woman with a grudge?!
I thought it was fabulous that Credle kept suggesting that Lee and Amanda were an item. Clearly the gossips have been hard at work 😉
Loving Billy in his 3 piece suit (See most men look better with a waistcoat ;)). Much more professional than the baggy brown grandad cardi!

I have to say as much as I love this episode the storyline is preposterous! And I shall leave it at that for now 😉

I remember when I first saw this scene in the (gasp!) 80s I kept screaming at the TV to stoooooop! So relieved that Amanda wasn’t Amanda. Boy, I still take this very personally!

Ok, now to the “average guy” comment. Really Lee????? So disappointed in you. Go to your timeout corner and think about what you just said and don’t come out till you figure out why that’s just alllll wrong, y’hear?!!

  17. Well, I confess, I have my thinking cap on this morning… so bear with me. First, I did laugh at the ” I see a pattern I don’t like” and it being Lee’s clothing choices. It made me wonder though, and I may be wrong, I don’t have time to check it. Lee’s jacket choice reminds me more of season 3 or 4 Lee and so does his hair. I guess I am wondering if it is signaling a change for Lee, maybe one he hasn’t really figures out how to accomplish. It is just that a tweed coat like that is more relaxed than his suit jackets.
The other thing I keep playing around with is the whole idea that this episode reveals how well they really know each other, but they don’t know that they know each other that well. Lee is known as a player and yet he never would have considered a tryst with Amanda. And this guy, Credle? obviously doesn’t know Amanda. And even the confusion over Credle’s character brings up this idea of how well everyone knows each other.
You can all shoot me, but as awful as Lee’s comment is, it doesn’t shock me.
I wouldn’t be surprised if in an environment like Washington society and Politics, some men were like that. Married players. And it wouldn’t surprise me that Lee would know them and even associate with them. What is surprising is that a man like Lee would have a deep friendship and respect for woman like Amanda and cherish her morals and principals. And even, eventually fall in love with her and commit himself to her even in a mystery marriage. And actually the fact that at the beginning of this episode they brush up against all those things with this scene in the office I think is important. Or else I am thinking too hard again 😉

  18. Lee’s line here is certainly the worst for him in the whole series – can’t help wondering if BB protested: “Doesn’t this make Lee look like a pig?” But times were different then, as we always say … I’ve always been slightly bothered by the fact that Larry died thinking it really was Amanda who shot him. Not that it matters about his feelings, but I think if Amanda ever learned of it (does she ever find out about these hotel trysts?), it would upset her.

It is interesting how convinced Larry seems to be that there must be something going on between Lee and Amanda. I think it’s one of those cases where it’s so obvious to everyone but the people involved. I also think it’s interesting that he seems slightly anxious about it, as if he thought Lee might beat the hell out of him for moving in on his babe – and given what we’ve seen of Lee’s tendency toward jealousy, that fear might be well founded.

Don Galloway, who played Larry, played a lot of cops, FBI agents and doctors over his long career, including a co-starring role on Ironside. According to his imdb entry, he finally realized after 30 years in the business that he couldn’t act for beans, so he retired. LOL!

There were no doppelganger episodes in Remington Steele that I recall, but there was the obligatory amnesia eppy, which is almost as preposterous.

  19. I remember watching this episode when it aired. At first I figured Amanda was undercover and got more and more confused as the opening progressed. I kept waiting for Lee to burst into the door and arrest Larry. Then the kissy face started. We did yell at the tv screen and were actually relieved when ‘Amanda’ shot the poor sap.
Remington Steele did use a ‘identical twins separated at birth’ episode, but it was a waitress/high powered executive character (kind of the prince and the pauper mixed with “my fair lady” thing).
And Lee’s “ah.. Not really.. at least no more so than the average guy” has got to be one of my least favourite pieces of Lee dialogue in the whole series. YUCK!

    I’ve had enough…someone shoot this guy…BWAHAHA

Billy: I’m sensing a pattern that I don’t like. (While looking at Lee in all of his patterns… ROFLMBO) It was way too much!!! That is definitely plaid though for BJo 🙂

Thanks needed the laugh for this Thurs. morning 🙂

    1. Plaid, indeedy!! I just hope that I can find a better view of Lee in this particular plaid outfit to use in my post when I get there! That way I don’t have to re-acquaint ourselves with the “average guy” line. Ugh.
