Karen: like now?
Lee doesn’t answer her though.. he has come with something he really wants to say to Amanda.. [Nooooo!!!]
Lee: Ahhh Amanda…

Man.. I find this gut wrenching!!! After how long all us fans have waited- to see Lee be sooo darn sweet to what he thinks is Amanda but it isn’t??? – noooo!!!! [LOL nice way for the writers to demonstrate growth and progress- without actually letting the relationship progress 😉 )

2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_002316883 Of course I can’t wait to hear what you all think – to me this is the moment where Lee begins to wonder what’s going on with Amanda..
Lee hesitates a moment:
yeah…

Amanda: Yeah.
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_002319386
Lee’s smile here slips away as he is deep in thought – and not in a good way.. to me it’s not a wow… this woman in front of me is amazing (like we’ve started to see a little bit more! Smile ) instead.. it seems neutral.. his superspy brain is in overdrive here.. what’s going on?? Something isn’t right…
Karen
notices too: Something wrong?

He’s trying not to be too transparent that an alarm bell seems to be going off here with Lee..[whooo it makes his voice extra gravely!!! *shivers* hoo haa!]2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_002325392
Lee: I.. I don’t know…

2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_002326893
Karen tries to lighten the mood and act 2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_002327394casual.. I think she knows she isn’t going to get away with this for long at all!! But.. she 2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_002331898hopes long enough to at least get him out of the hospital!: ugh.. well.. Yeah.. I really hate hospitals… [the Bluebell hates hospitals? I don’t think so…] …I’d really like to go home now.
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_002332399
Lee outwardly looks relaxed..
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_002332899
but that was way too easy.: Yeah sure!
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_002333400
Lee smiles and acts casual.. he’s hiding his confusion here IMHO.. Then Lee says naturally: Ah but I’m afraid you can’t go home. Not just yet. You’re going to have to stay at that hotel until we find Gordon Redding.
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_002336903
Lee watches Amanda closely here, though outwardly still casual. I think this is a test on his part this statement..
Karen nods silently in response (whoa! well that’s definitely not what the real Amanda would have said in response to Lee’s statement! Amanda? silent??!!! teee hee that’s pretty rare! 🙂 )
Lee continues:
The agency will pick up the tab.
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_002339906
Karen sounds upbeat and nods some more: Oh well… Ready??
That’s all she says in response?? whooo Lee really knows something is not right here!
Lee super casually: Yeah!
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_002341908
He opens the door for her, and lets her past.. as we see the door close, we notice Lee is 2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_002347914walking away but hesitates a moment looking at the ground as they leave..
2.17 ODDS ON A DEAD PIGEON.avi_002350417
The scene ends here.. so I’ll come back to Lee and Karen’s next movements in the next post.. but.. Come on everyone! What do you think is going on here?? do tell!! and don’t feel you have to agree with my ideas.. (though of course I’d love to hear what you think of them)
Go for it!
So what is Lee thinking here?? I’ll share my thinking.. and look forward to hearing yours!
A couple of things give Karen away..  it really isn’t long before he suspects something isn’t right. Firstly, he knows he spoke on the phone to someone who sounded just like Amanda – so he’s already on guard about that.. not that he could be thinking there is a doppelganger around of Amanda.. but he knows there are strange games afoot (plus that chimed music everywhere makes Lee really suspicious! Winking smile ).

Then.. IMHO Amanda isn’t usually at this stage of the story very forceful about having a job to do.. that comes later – and seems to Lee to be different. The script says ‘Lee studies her for a moment. vaguely disturbed by something he cannot identify.’ (in reaction to that line about ‘we all have a job to do’).. interesting!

There’s also the fact that ‘Amanda’ barely raises a peep when he can’t make things better for her family – we all know Amanda has been making lots of noise about that!!! Amanda is not this easy!!!
Lee might be wondering: Have the medical tests got it wrong? has the gas done something to her??

Lee can’t possibly join the dots here.. but there is one more thing IMHO which would have set Lee’s alarm bells ringing – this isn’t in the script or anything.. I like to think it’s how BB played it.. but I see Lee as being very aware of Amanda at this stage of the show, he cares for her very much, and he is fighting strong feelings towards her – He’s sexually attracted to her – there’s a zing when they are together- you know?? But with this Amanda?? when he looks at her- there is suddenly nothing??!! There is no spark..something’s different!
As Amanda said beside the Thames in
Affair at Bromfield Hall  about Lady Bromfield not being in love with her husband: ‘There’s nothing in her eyes!!’ Same here with this Amanda!!! There’s nothing..

Also, there is nothing he is fighting to keep control of.. he feels nothing – where did that feeling go??? I think he has had that feeling since the moment he met Amanda- years ago – and suddenly it’s not there- so he reeeaaally notices!!!! He was excited to see her when he arrived.. now?? there’s no excitement.. just unease!!

I think this is one reason why Lee is utterly confused – how can that spark just suddenly disappear like that? Does that happen?? Maybe things weren’t special with Amanda.. maybe he got what he wanted and it went away! LOL…  I think it would be very disturbing!! [I like to think this episodes answers this one for Lee Winking smile but I’ll get back to that!]

This idea of there always being an undercurrent of sexual awareness between them  reminds me of the moment in
I am not now, nor have I ever been a spy. Lee is telling Amanda they are co-workers.. but it’s like Amnesiac Amanda can sense there’s a whole lot of something going on between them – so what he is saying and what she is reading from him (Mr licking his lips and looking her up and down!)  and her own body is completely contradictory! Winking smile I like to think their bodies know before their brains do.. tee heee.. and here? Lee’s body is saying – this ain’t right!

BTW- Lee is darn gorgeous in this scene when he is being so lovely with ‘Amanda’ Smile A man who treats a woman well is a sight to behold Smile A shame it got wasted on Karen!

I hope I’ve made some sense here! And look forward to hearing from you all! Do you also feel sad that Amanda doesn’t get to have Lee say these things to her in this moment?? This is a big one sorry! but no way was I splitting this scene! Okay byeee for now.

  1. I always thought his suspicion was bc he never told Amanda all about what happened with Redding. So how would she know about his job. Reminded me of when she snooped about Dorothy and he figured that out. I like the ideas here though and I hadn’t thought of how off things must feel to him. 🙂

Ps I am getting caught up again!

    1. Hey Sab! Great to see you stop by again!!! It’s been ages!!! Glad to hear you are catching up!!! Do please continue to share your thoughts as you do..

Dorothy? We are not up to her yet.. soooo I’m not thinking Dorothy: yet! 🙂

Save me looking it up.. what did Amanda say about the job? [save me going back to that post? I’m time poor]

If anyone else reads this and is catching up – do feel free to share your feedback or ideas on posts previously walked through – I love it!!! and I’m pretty sure others do to 🙂

If I could make one suggestion.. it would be to give a little context to what is being commented on – it saves us from having to go back to the post and read it all over again in order to respond properly – and time constraints can prevent people from responding. [and often comments are read by email from people so they don’t necessarily go back to the post to read comments]

I love to discuss any episode but confess time constraints mean I don’t have time to go back to a post that was written 2 years or a year ago to see what was said about it that someone is (wonderfully) now responding to –
Does anyone else experience this? or is it just me? Maybe it is just me ha!
-Thrilled to hear thoughts on earlier episodes again, but not necessarily able to go back and read the whole post again to understand what someone is referring to ??
Maybe it would be helpful if I added this hint somewhere.. I could do a little post about this and how JWWM doesn’t jump ahead with the story and how that works – a place for people to post questions about it too.. One more week and I’ll get onto this! Little time pressed at the moment 😦 booo

Keep those thoughts coming Sab!!! I know there are others stopping by and catching up right along with you!!!
I hope you are well!! Hurry hurry!! we are nearly up to Wizard!! 🙂 tee heee..

Can you jump ahead? and simultaneously walk through them to catch up? ha!! ohh I am so hard to please!!! 🙂

  2. I like IWSOD how you said that you think Lee knew with his body as well as his brain that something was off. I always got that in his mind he knew. This is Mr.superspy he is trained to notice things and he knows Amanda so well, but I bet you there is just something wrong with the whole aura for him here. Sadly for a lot of couples when they have been together for awhile they take each other for granted, but while in a lot of ways I think Lee and Amanda are very much involved they haven’t crossed that line officially yet. They are still at a point where they are very aware of eachother. I am sure subconsciously Lee is very aware that his response to her and her response to him is wrong. I think it may be even more the body than the brain at this point because you can tell Lee knows something is off but they’ve been together less than a few minutes. Really not much time for the brain to have enough evidence to have alarm bells going off.

  3. Was watching one of our all time faves today – LAFound 😉 I forgot that in that episode Amanda tells Lee that there’s nothing in Ava’s eyes – no magic – and that’s why she doesn’t think she loves Angelo. Again with the eyes! So glad Lee realized there was nothin’ in Ava’s lyin’ eyes!!

    1. Maybe he didn’t see anything in AA’s eyes either. Is he noticing a spark in some beautiful, beautiful, pretty eyes? (isn’t that how Amanda describes Lee’s eyes in Dead Ringer?)

  4. I think someone mentioned that this scene has them sitting on a bed together and mentioned ROTP. That was the first “together on a bed” scene and was kind of slapstick. But it is interesting to look at these scenes because they kind of tell a story in themselves. The ROTP one is funny and awkward and they are completely pretending just because they have to. In this one they are both sitting on the bed (even though it isn’t really Amanda) but they are on opposite sides of the bed with Lee’s legs hanging off of one side and “Amanda’s” on the other. It will be fun to compare these with other bed scenes coming up.
I think it is significant that Lee doesn’t even try to touch Amanda again. If he wasn’t feeling that check within him self that something was wrong about Amanda here he would have probably reached out to touch her.

  5. I’m intrigued by the discussion of Lee feeling something is “off” with Amanda on an almost unconscious level. It reminds me of Capgras Syndrome, the strange brain disorder where people suffer the delusion that their closest loved ones (or sometimes even themselves) have been replaced by exact duplicates. One of the possible explanations for this malady is that for whatever reason, the sufferer fails to experience the familiar, innate, “gut” reaction to those special people in his life – the emotional/physical response we all have, but may not be aware of consciously. Yet when it’s absent, it leaves a huge, disorienting hole.

I’m not suggesting Lee has Capgras – just that it’s this very basic, almost primal response to “his” Amanda that is suddenly missing. There’s a theory that suggests we all have a template in our brains/psyches of our ideal mate – developed at a very early age based on a variety of factors. But the point is, in this theory we tend to choose our partners based on how well they match this unconscious template. This might explain the phenomenon of “love at first sight;” it’s when we encounter someone who almost exactly fits our internal model. There is a fanfic (I think it might be one of RedGold’s again) that describes Lee and Amanda’s first encounter at the rail station as a “shock of recognition.” Again, this wasn’t a conscious thing for either of them. But for some reason, Lee scanned the crowd at the station, had only a split second to make a decision, and thought, “There! That one. Her.”

I concur that Lee’s hinky reaction to notAmanda is due in part to her slightly wrong responses to him. But I also agree that there is something deeper, beneath his conscious awareness, that KNOWS this duplicate is a phony.

      1. Kgmohror I am so glad you brought up Capgras Syndrome!!!! It is very intriguing!!
I hadn’t connected the dots but that was exactly what I was describing! [I must have been drawing on memories of that syndrome without realising it because I’m 99.9% sure I didn’t come up with it haaa!]

Anyway, it was first identified in the early 1920s I believe.. though not completely understood of course.. Maybe it’s the kind of effect smk writers were aiming at to explore Lee and Amanda’s relationship..

Here is a fantastic talk on it: http://www.bodyinmind.org/ramachandran-and-phantom-limb-pain/
Love Ramachandran.. he first introduced me to this stuff.. and he is very entertaining and not super technical.. so I’d recommend this ted talk.

He even mentions the difference between seeing someone – and talking to them on the phone that is involved in this syndrome!!! It’s the first condition he discusses and well worth a listen- enjoy everyone! Thanks again for bringing it up kgmohror.. I’ll respond more tonight – I’m in the middle of my work day here.. byee all!

LOL BJo you got it!!!! Lee’s amygdala responds to Amanda.. tee heee.. his body knows what his mind doesn’t yet! 🙂

  6. Well, I don’t think I can really add anything that everybody else hasn’t already said! I just want to agree with the thought that Karen is too “pushy” (impatient, cutting Lee off) and just not as understanding of Lee’s feelings… and I think that yes, it would have been a niggling feeling for Lee that something wasn’t right–he might not have been able to pinpoint an exact something or somethings, but the “zing” would not have been there (anybody else think of Hotel Transylvania when Iwsod mentioned the “zing”?). If Lee had antennae (like Celeste in TFT–LOL!), they would surely have been twitching like crazy. It manifests itself in him pulling his facial mask back on, and not touching her…
And yes–Lee is very adorable in the scene, being so gentle and thoughtful with who he thinks is Amanda, and–as much as I hate that we know that Karen gets to benefit (but she doesn’t care) and Amanda’s not able to appreciate it now–I think the future payoff is so much bigger… it allows Lee to grow without Amanda reciprocating earlier… it gives their relationship that much more time to mature into the awesomeness that it becomes. (My brain just went asdxdoghaghbob at the end there.)
I just want to say: physically, Lee is becoming more attractive the more sensitive he becomes. Swoon-thud (Does that make any sense?)

  7. I, too, was upset that Lee apologized so warmly, and Amanda missed it. He trusts Amanda so completely, he feels like he can be himself and she will be accepting of him just the way she is. Karen expects to use this to get his guard down, even more so than the other agents she killed. It has taken Lee a long time to open up to this point, but he knows Amanda is a completely safe haven for him, and that makes Karen’s taking advantage of this trust even more diabolical.

I liked the idea that some of Lee’s unease as he talked to Karen is because he wasn’t feeling the spark, especially since that lines up well with something that comes after. It means that his attraction to Amanda goes far deeper than a physical level, because here is an exact physical duplicate, and it just isn’t the same thing! Although I doubt that he’s reasoning any of this out, or even really aware of it on a cognitive level — it’s probably the instincts he brags about kicking in. But anyway, it’s great that Karen can’t be with Lee for even 60 seconds without setting off warning bells. I was hoping that would happen when they finally met face to face. It just goes to show that she can copy Amanda’s looks, wardrobe, mannerisms, but she can’t copy the real Amanda — what’s inside. I wonder if she got a little cocky when she found out Lee and Amanda weren’t lovers, as if that’s the only kind of closeness she can visuallize. She doesn’t seem to have any conception of friendship, the selfless kind that Amanda has always offered to Lee and Lee is learning to offer back, and that’s part of what makes her responses a bit off. IMO, plot holes and all, this episode is a huge one for the relationship.

    1. You mentioned something about getting his guard down, happycamper. I know that is what Gordon was after, but the thing is that is why it won’t work, because Lee’s guard is down with Amanda and so he is open to who she is and that is why he recognizes that something is up so quickly. Kind of ironic.

  8. I do think Lee picked up on “something not being right” intuitively. Her first response wasn’t quite Amanda, but her interruption and next response was definitely off. I think he is probably piecing things together as they head down the elevator. Notice he doesn’t touch her as she goes through the doorway, and i don’t think the usual touching happens at all with Karen. (Will have to wait to verify this, but I think I’m right.) His senses are definitely on high alert.

How would the real Amanda have responded? Hmmm. Have to think on that a bit.

Love that big Lee smile here, though. Shame it doesn’t affect Karen the way it does us. She wouldn’t be able to talk and then he’s definitely have known it wasn’t Amanda. LOL. 🙂

  9. I am so loving and agreeing with everyone’s comments regarding this scene. The “I’m sorry” alone from Lee would have caused me to need a crash cart and he is so devastatingly smokin’ here. He is so concerned about all the distress he may have caused Amanda. It is so wonderful that he is sharing with her instead of all those times when he would tell her something was “need to know”. Love that he’s sharing, but not that it’s with Karen.

I agree that Amanda’s previous comments were not about hating hospitals, but more about just not wanting to be there. Also, so true how Amanda had just told Lee about how sweet he was being. She responded in a somewhat bashful and shy way and made Lee feel comfortable about opening up. Here this Karen cuts him off and is not very responsive to his openness, no sweetness at all…red flags everywhere. I think it causes him to put his guard back up.

For as much as others have watched Lee and Amanda they can only see the surface, outside stuff. Others (except Billy, I think) aren’t aware of the subtle nuances and changes these two have gone and been going through and therefore don’t understand, can’t get, and won’t be able to recreate what they have. I, too, think Karen realizes she needs to speed the whole process up and get Lee moving.

So great to see how everyone seems to be on the same page with this scene. And don’t we all just love the gorgeousness of Lee here?

  10. Yep — spot on! And the screen caps really emphasize what fantastic actors BB and KJ are.
I love the fact Lee noticed something was off almost immediately (though at the time I was furious he was being all sweet to AA when he should have been saying these things and sitting on the bed with the real Amanda.)
I somehow suspect AA would have been able to fool Dotty for a bit longer.

    Like

    1. I agree, Cindy. I think Amanda has had some real different behavior around home since she started working at the agency and I think Dotty would have chalked it up to that and let it slide for a while. Plus we all know how busy she must be running the house and taking care of the boys while Amanda works – I’m sure she’d have a lot on her mind and be very busy.

      Like

    2. I think she could have fooled Dotty as long as she didn’t have to interact with the boys any. I don’t think she would have been able to interact with the boys in any real convincing way, because she wouldn’t have that “mother vibe” going on.

  11. Hello…trying to sneak in some SMK time here before my company wakes up…shhhh, type softly, BJo. Even though I haven’t been able to comment on the last two posts, I’m so glad you didn’t leave us hanging for long, iwsod! Gordon and Karen aside, I do love this episode! “Attentive and gorgeous Lee” – be still my beating heart…before you wake up my company 🙂 Just lovely, iwsod! Lee and Amanda on the bed together…this is the second time? That hilarious scene in ROTP is the only other time so far, I think. Of course since this really isn’t Amanda I guess it doesn’t count now, does it?

Hmmm, I’ve been giving this lots of thought and trying to decide in my mind just what the real Amanda would say here and how she would say it. I agree with you iwsod, Lee’s antennae are picking up some sort of vibe here – or lack thereof as you say it. Maybe it’s the sexual tension, but I think it may also have to do with what she says and how she says it.

Am I having major amnesia myself or is this the first time in the series where he apologizes for her being targeted as a result of her relationship with Lee? I know in SBTB the baddies thought she was Lee, so that is a little different in my mind. And that is such an emotionally charged little reunion that I don’t think it is a good comparative situation. He apologizes for this later in the series, but not before, at least not like this. Please speak up if anyone can think of a time before when this has happened. Because it hasn’t happened before, I’m left to my own mind of how Amanda would respond to his apology.

I think Amanda would say something about it not being Lee’s fault, but I also think she would accept Lee’s apology with a thank you. She is always almost overly polite. I also think she would have not interrupted him and would have touched him gently in some way to reassure him that she didn’t blame him and that she knew he was doing his job. Here she comes across harder and more aggressive than the real Amanda. She is not treating Lee as lovingly and caringly as she normally does. I think it is that aspect of her character that Lee notices is missing and is a big part of why he is falling for her – perhaps that is why he is missing the sexual tension as you say, iwsod? He is a sucker for Amanda’s genuine, caring way of treating him. Like his admitting he cares about her and needs peace of mind earlier in the ep, this sweet little apology on the hospital bed is a new thing for Lee and Karen is missing the significance of it and responding to Lee in a way that doesn’t feel right. She is not noticing his continued sweetness!! It’s as if she forgot about that earlier scene. She also doesn’t give him that look where she just lovingly smiles at him with no expectation of anything in return (like a friend) and stares at him for a beat too long. You know the one?

So what do I think the real Amanda would say? I guess I’m not really sure. I’ll leave it up to those of you who have a talent for fanfic writing. But I definitely think she would have touched him!!

    1. As I was reading your comment, BJo, I kept thinking that it was if Amanda had forgotten their last exchange in the hallway about Lee’s sweetness. And here he comes ready to give her more sweetness and she is all business like. Yes, that would mess with him and get his alarms going. It would take a lot for Lee to decide to continue in sweetness and Amanda would have known that and responded in kind. Now I can’t wait for the ending scene on the building.

    2. BJo, I seem to recall Lee blaming himself for Amanda’s predicament in “Brunettes Are In” (while they’re held hostage on the boat, he says she wouldn’t be in this mess if it weren’t for him involving her in the agency; ironically, in this one instance it’s not true!)

  12. I love that it is Karen’s words about everybody having a job to do that begins the alarm bells. All along it has been Lee’s protestations that they don’t have a personal relationship, that it is solely based on “the job” when what they really do have is a personal relationship and that relationship has been growing increasingly stronger every moment. And here Lee feels the absence of that personal relationship acutely and is alarmed, especially when Karen’s response to this personal chat about their current situation is to refer to “the job.”

Didn’t Gordon or Karen say something earlier about Lee and Amanda not being as close as they thought? Well, I guess maybe they are as close as everyone thinks and Lee and Amanda are beginning to see it too. Yay!

I also love the thought that Lee has an awareness of Amanda, that they both always have had that. And it is a sexually charged one. It is so true, they have been like magnets with each other since the very beginning. I like the way you say, Iwsod, that Lee is aware of how he has to fight his strong attraction to Amanda and here with Karen there is nothing to fight. That goes so well with the next scene in the car. At this moment it has got to be confusing the heck out of Lee, he may even feel a bit of relief when Karen makes the reveal, because then he will know that his emotional responses to Amanda haven’t suddenly disappeared.

All this has got to become very clear to Lee, I know he has been dense about his feelings for Amanda, but this is going to be hard to ignore and I wonder how he is going to compartmentalize this information…

    1. Ah, yes, Morley – I agree! I almost said something in my comment about how she says we were just doing our jobs. I think the real Amanda could have still said something like that, just not in the way Karen says it. Earlier in the ep she tells Gordon that “you thought they were lovers” but that they aren’t. So Karen here treats him as if they are just in a working relationship not a personal one. After all, who could be in a personal relationship with Scarecrow and not be his lover? In this short scene, it is a subtle difference, but because Lee knows Amanda very well he is noticing something is not right.

This reminds me of The Damn Duck episode – it is Amanda’s awareness of Lee there that makes her realize something is just not right. Here we have the reverse!

  13. I think your interpretation is spot on IWSOD 🙂
There is something subtle but most definitely “off” about Anti Amanda which just goes to show studying someone, their walk, their mannerisms isn’t enough to get the job done. Lame idea Gordon, if AA hadn’t been able to leave when she did I think she would have failed in her mission hence the reason she’s so quick to pull the gun on him.
I confess it’s only until reading this scene and looking at your screen caps that the significance of this little exchange became apparent *blush*
