10/18 Season Three, Episode 03 : Over the Limit- Scarecrow and Mrs King (Blog order-Episode 02)

3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001411244Moving on we see a Trans-oceanic Industries truck pull into a factory. 3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001423256O’Keefe is looking at a newspaper article mourning the death of 3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001426459Rawlings.. he closes it and gives Tarzan a good whack. [the script had an article next to it about the murder of Kurt Magnusson.. that makes more sense of O’Keefe’s anger here IMHO] Tarzan is confident that Lee 3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001437671didn’t see his face.. O’Keefe checks the car can’t be traced back to them.

Tarzan: it’s registered to an old lady! There’s no way they’re gonna trace it back to us. Look! I said I know my job!
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001449683O’Keefe: Then do it. Find out who he was. What he knows. And if you have to, make him disappear.
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001457691My goodness.. O’Keefe likes a high body count huh!

Back at Amanda’s place. New outfit.. I guess this is the next day..
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001460093
Oh my.. just look at the milk, eggs and crispy critters randomly out.. I guess this is telling us it’s morning? looks very staged..
Amanda is in the kitchen on the phone – she’s looking at the newspaper article also.. [again, it being about Magnusson makes more sense.. but whatever!]
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001466499Amanda: Yeah well I’ve been trying to call Elizabeth all morning and she’s not on the boat and she’s not at the save our bay offices.
(Amanda hears Phillip and Jamie at the front door.. something’s going on)
…okay well, if you hear anything would you just umm ahh find me, I’ll be at the shooting range…
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001473707
(Amanda listens to the person on the other end, but we can still also hear the boys excitedly at the front door) … yeah.. okay.. alright.. I’ll see you later. bye byee.
Amanda hangs up.. err who was she talking to?? Lee?? I guess it is.. ? and umm could she have mentioned any louder that she was going to be at THE SHOOTING RANGE!!!!! Oh what am I thinking.. the boys ears would sooo not prick up at hearing this if they had! Winking smile
Amanda calls to the boys:
Hey Fellas!!!!
she rushes to the front door.
Doh! once again Amanda is faster than Dotty!!!
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001480914Amanda reaches the front door and the parcel just before Dotty!
Amanda: what have we here? Rebecca’s fantasies!?
Dotty comes up from behind Amanda and snatches the parcel away.
Dotty: that’s for me.
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001484918[BTW- Notice Amanda has magically carried a serviette with her to the hallway from the kitchen, where before she wasn’t carrying one! I think they filmed this part, with Amanda using the serviette as a prop, so they then had to add the breakfast items to the previous scene to hint at breakfast.. don’t mind me! ]
Back to the lingerie!
Amanda: Mother, what have you ordered?
Phillip and Jamie are confused.. and fascinated by this little display!
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001486519Amanda knows the box is from Rebecca’s fantasies!!!! What does she think is in there!!! and she asks Dotty about it in front of the boys??!!! What is Amanda thinking?!!! I think Amanda is so confused right now her brain is all disconnected!!!

Dotty: well to be perfectly honest…
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001487320
(Dotty hugs the parcel close to her, and glances at the boys then back to Amanda. Amanda notes the boys also.)  …I really don’t think any of this should concern you.
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001488922
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001491324Amanda: Mother, I have to know. You’re my mother.
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001492125
You’re a parent. You’re a grandparent.
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001492926
The camera cuts to Phillip and Jamie
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001495328
watching them back and forth like it’s a tennis match!

3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_0014969303.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001497731Dotty: I’m also an adult. And a woman…
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001499332
…With interests, needs. You’re my daughter.
Interesting that Amanda raises Dotty’s role as a parent and grandparent – in response to her concern about what she’s ordered.. says a lot 3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001503336no?? Amanda is struggling to reconcile a parent and grandmother ordering anything from.. there!
Love that Dotty’s response is that she is an adult, a woman and has needs!!!!!! And.. she reminds Amanda of her role – daughter! Amanda is not her parent!!!
Dotty rocks. She continues:
… when  I ask you questions like this you tell me not to.
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001505739

Amanda smiles (though not really!) : Fellas. Why don’t you take the trash out.
the boys:
right on grandma! Go for it!!!
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001506539they run away.. Hmm.. why are they saying that? do they know what’s in the box?? or.. are they just happy that Dotty told Amanda it’s none of her business? The boy’s reaction here confuses me!
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001508942Dotty begins to laugh as the boys leave..
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001509743
she’s finding this whole situation a bit of a laugh though kinda awkward..

at least she isn’t angry with Amanda for asking her such questions – especially in front of the boys.
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001510543Amanda isn’t seeing the funny side though. She’s fixated on that box!!! [I can hear it now!!! Amanda and her boxes!!! her Tupperware!! Winking smile Has Amanda been forced to deal with her own Amanda’s fantasies box? Winking smile ]
Dotty: I just realised what it must have sounded like when you’d sneak in at 3am…
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001512946
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001514547(more quietly) …and I’d been waiting up.
Amanda jumps in pretty fast here.. Is Dotty saying she knows Amanda gets home sometimes at 3am?? and is Amanda cutting her off before she pursues that avenue of discussion? that last line of Dotty’s is confusing
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001516950me.. not sure.. anyone?
Amanda is still fixated on that box: Mother. Please!!!! [heck, I think Dotty should have told her nothing!]
Dotty: alright. alright. Hunter Conrad asked me to the coast for the weekend.
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001519352Amanda wrings that serviette now tightly (ah now I see why she has it!!!) :
Hunter Conrad??!!
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001521755…Do you mean… Mr.. Conrad?? Daddy’s old fishing buddy?
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001524958Dotty quietly: Amanda, he has been a widower over six years!..
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001527360
…You’re sounding very old fashioned about this.
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001535368Amanda’s distress is increasing here: 3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001536169Mother!!! You are going to the coast, where you.. 3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001537771..and Daddy use to go with Hunter Conrad .. (she whispers this last bit pointing at the box) .. with that!!!!!
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_0015396063.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001540006
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001540173Dotty is unflinching: Yes…
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001541775
…Yes..
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001542809
(she looks down at the box she’s holding in her arms, then looks back up at Amanda. We cut to Amanda.. rofl the look on her face!!! Oh my!!!!! )
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001544277
…Yes.
Dotty’s delivery of her yes yes yes here is perfect! Dignified, confident in herself.. and your problem is not my problem Amanda! Smile
We cut to Amanda and Lol at the look on her face!!!!!! Conniptions!!
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001544811
Dotty walks off to leave Amanda to try and get her head around all this!
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001546012Amanda closes her eyes and cries quietly: Ohhhh..
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001548148
and lets out a big sigh while making a fist… she’s so restrained!!
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001548281
but her hand clenching is a bit of a give away Winking smile 3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_001549349she did the same thing last week in response to Francine’s comment about her mother having the same pyjamas in fuchsia!

So did you notice the boo boo with the box?? how one moment you can read the label and the next moment you can’t???!!!!!

I love the banner Lovesmk!!! It looks brilliant with the coloured box featured throughout!! Thank you!!!
OvertheLimit-Banner3

Okay everyone!!! soooo come on!!!! do share.. what do you think is going on here??

I’ll share a few ideas too..

I think Amanda is totally out of line with her questioning of her mother!! Does anyone disagree?
but.. I’ll also cut Amanda some slack because she’s going through a tough time this episode.. she’s very confused!!! Both Lee and Amanda make mistakes and are very confused this episode!! I think Dotty will be just fine though, no permanent damage Winking smile

I think as opposed to Amanda’s reaction to Rebecca’s fantasies earlier – this time, Amanda is reacting not to the product, but to Dotty’s buying the product.. I think she was taken by surprise here.. and why would Dotty want it?? for who?? who is Dotty seeing??

Then.. it turns out the guy is an old friend, that Dotty and Amanda’s father use to see – on the coast, where Dotty and he are about to go!!! this is all too much for Amanda to take in all at once! what do you think bothers her most??

Dotty having a weekend away with a man? or away with a man who was friends with her and her first husband? or.. is it the location?? and all the memories that go along with ‘the coast’? Or.. is it a combination??!!!

I am guessing that Dotty ordering parcels from Rebecca’s fantasies is raising thoughts Amanda really doesn’t want to deal with right now – her own love life.. her own interests and needs.. she may have to admit again that she has them.. and right now she is trying not to! Since first uncovering the catalogue Amanda has learned of Lee’s ‘friend’ and I think this is in the back of her mind.. she senses something is different..different?? she doesn’t like that!!!!  She was happy and settled and coping with the way things were.. and now what’s going on??!!! with Lee?? with Dotty??!!!

I think again here we see a changing relationship – Dotty and Hunter Conrad are moving their old friendship into new territory with a weekend away together – I think this is hitting very close to home for Amanda and the feelings she is fighting for Lee. Friendships don’t just change into romance! do they?? Winking smile Well, I think this question is now finally beginning to be addressed in Amanda’s mind about her and Lee – a question she has not dared to ask herself up till now IMHO!

To top it all off, I think Amanda is feeling a little left behind.. Lee has a new relationship, Dotty has well.. a weekend away Winking smile and Amanda? nothing right now! I think she’s struggling a bit with all the change she is seeing around her, when inside of her things are starting to change in a scary way for her too – as she is beginning to realise just how deep her feelings for Lee go nowadays.. that unconscious is starting to break through and it is freakin Amanda out!!!!

Your mother having a sex life?? well.. you don’t get any more Freudian than that do ya? Winking smile I swear! the writers are into psychoanalysis!

I guess in addition, Amanda is dealing with the stress of being at the bombing, worrying about Elizabeth and how to help her and her family (it’s extra stressful given that she very much identifies with Elizabeth- a mother trying to make the world a safer place, championing for the environment.. she’s alot like Amanda)  and Amanda is probably anxious about finally going to the firing range – scary!!! Oh and there’s another change huh- Amanda hates guns!!!! Amanda has a lot to deal with this episode and it all comes at once!!! (and we haven’t even actually had Amanda confront the really big change that’s coming yet!)

BTW- interesting to note the script had the two scenes in this post in the opposite order to that in which they aired.. hmm..

Poor Amanda!! Why don’t you head off to the shooting range and get rid of some of that tension hmm??!!! 😉 Well.. I better stop here for now.. lots to discuss in this one – lol hopefully we didn’t discuss it all in the first post! Byeee for now!!!

  1. So many good comments here.
I do think that Amanda is feeling a little “left behind” in the romance department. Her mother is planning a tryst and buying sexy lingerie to seal the deal, Lee has a new girlfriend and wants to buy the new girl a sexy dress, (a replica of one of Amanda’s dresses —there’s something very creepy about that), and Amanda has no one. Yep, feeling like she is left out!

  2. I always felt like Amanda was uncomfortable mostly because it’s her mother. As someone above said, it’s one thing to know you mother is dating, it’s another to be confronted with proof she’s having sex. Most people don’t even like thinking about their parents having sex even though obviously they do. Then add to that the fact that she’s going to have sex with a friend of her fathers in a place her mother and father used to go… I’d probably be pretty icked out too. No matter why she was uncomfortable, having the boys there was just wrong and silly. They wouldn’t have that kind of conversation in front of them. And their reaction… ‘Go Grandma’ was pretty far-fetched too. I’m sure they were supposed to be all for it in contrast to Amanda, but a normal reaction from pre-teen boys to finding out their grandmother bought sexy lingerie for a weekend tryst would be ‘Eww gross Grandma’. There are other scenes in other episodes that show Amanda as much less of a prude than this (remember back the first episodes where she and Dean were on the floor and had to pop up from behind the couch)… so I think this was more about her being her mom than it was about Amanda’s prudishness

    1. Oh Allofakind thank you!!! Glad it wasn’t just me scratching my head at why would the boys be saying that? and why would Amanda ask about Rebecca’s fantasies in front of the boys? !!! just wrong! lol.. I wonder if you’ll agree with me about Leslie! I just published post 14 where we meet her.. hope you have fun reading it! byeeee!

    2. The other night, I was watching Over the Limit again, and I turned on the subtitles because I had trouble catching what someone was saying. I had completely missed before that, after the boys say “Go for it!” and run off, one of them says “What’s the big deal about Rebecca’s Fantasies, anyway?” I think it might have been Jamie, but I’m not sure. Anyway, I took it that the boys were just cheering on Grandma because she was arguing with Mom and they thought it was cool, not because they completely understood what the argument was about.

      1. Interesting… that would change it a bit. I didn’t hear that at all. Maybe I should watch it again :-).

  3. I think the sneaking in at 3am line has to do with more recent behavior with Amanda. I think she has always been conservative. Yes she was talking with Penny about lingerie, but it was in regards to someone she was married to at that time. Amanda couldn’t even say affair or fling (has come up in a few episodes). What I think is the missing piece of this puzzle is what was Amanda’s father like and when and how did he die. Dotty say that Mr. Conrad has been a widow for 6 years, but no mention as to how long she has been alone. I’m thinking that Amanda’s father may have been the conservative one (and that Amanda takes after him). I don’t recall learning much if anything about Amanda’s father, and I’m not sure we find much out even in later episodes, so we’ll keep our eyes/ears open.
This scene may also be setting up the future question of when did they……..? So we’ll need to remember this scene when we get to season 4 as L & A’s relationship progresses.

  4. I was wondering if Amanda may have called Lee that morning maybe, sort of, kinda to make sure he was up and on the job and um, alone. Maybe she had a bit of an alternative motive. Not sure what I really think about that, but I thought I would throw it out there…

  5. Like so many other comments, I do think Amanda is reacting this way because it is her mother with her father’s friend in a place that has memories for Amanda of her family being together. At any age that is a hard thing to let yourself be ok with at a moments notice. I would think that it would be even harder if you had a really important friend that you are struggling to keep in the friend position because, yes, you do have fantasies. I think Amanda has had moments of fantasy concerning Lee from the first time on. She has worked very hard to be practical and try not to and build a working friendship. And she has done well. I am sure it rattles her that her mother is able to pursue things she cannot, again I do think some of this is under the surface for her.
I also think it probably does shake Amanda up to have two very important people in her life behaving in some ways that seem to be very different than how she has couned on them behaving in he past (recent past as it concerns Lee)

  6. I kind of find this scene absurd. Even if Amanda was going to confront her mother about her love life, would she really do it in front of the boys. Also I can’t see Amanda getting that offended by lingerie. Sweet and innocent as she may be, Amanda did discuss her lingerie with a practical stranger at one point. I think Amanda is upset that her mother is getting lingerie. It may not be the first time Dotty has dated since Amanda’s father died, but knowing your mom is dating and knowing for a fact that your mother is having sex are two completely different things. I think when Amanda was saying she had the right to know, she meant she had the right to know what kind of guy Dotty was seeing, that as a parent and grand parent any guy in her life would effect her child and grandchildren. Personally , I still don’t think it was Amanda’s business. If the guy was coming and going from her bedroom that would be a different story. Though, I can see why it would bother Amanda a little that Dotty was going to the same place she went with Amanda’s father.

As for Dotty’s comment on how Amanda doesn’t like it when Dotty asks her those kind of questions, I think Dotty has long thought there is something more taking Amanda’s time and attention than work. As for the 3 am comment I think Dotty meant back when Amanda was dating more whether it be Joe or someone else. I have always thought maybe Amanda had a little bit of a wilder side before she settled down and got married and had kids. Joe’s old house mother kind of suggested that in TWWH, and it would explain why Amanda took to spy life so well. It was a way to channel that wilder side of hers that she couldn’t really indulge any more. It may be also why Dotty is so anxious for Amanda to get married again. She figures if it made Amanda settle down once, it could again.

  7. BTW – love the banner.
It made me think about the logo on the box. I’ve never really thought much about Rebecca’s Fantasies – just assumed it was a play on Victoria’s Treasures. But I wonder if Amanda has had the occasional fantasy or two that she is now mad and/or disappointed at herself for indulging in? Amanda’s Fantasies?
Thrown out there for discussion. 😉

  8. I agree IWSOD Amanda had no right to be questioning her mother or indeed telling her she needs to know. Bit hypocritical considering the secrets she keeps for Dotty.
I do find this side of Amanda a bit too puritanical for my tastes….it’s a slinky chemise not some erm……adult toy. Amanda can’t even use the excuse that Dotty has started dating for first time since her father passed away because that’s not true. For once I am with the boys……..go grandma 😀 I love how BG delivers this scene, it’s spot on.

    1. Yes, I agree Bitsybeans, I put Amanda’s reaction down to the shock she’s received throughout the day and a bit of the, OMG, my mother is going to have, ewww, yah know put hands over ears and sings lalalala.

By the way, if you all get a chance, check out Bitsybeans’ Sherlock blog (http://studyinsherlock.wordpress.com). It’s totally cool!

    2. Puritanical – good word to describe some very un-Amanda like behaviour here, especially as you say over just some lingerie. This is what made me think about the pendulum reaction – Amanda has gone from having a healthy, centred approach to such matters to this new behaviour of puritanism and disapproval. Its more like she is maybe ashamed of her own thoughts and reactions in recent days.

  9. I guess Amanda is talking to Lee. I can’t really figure who else she would be having that conversation with. She sounds a bit more formal, less relaxed than she normally does with Lee by this stage of their friendship – I figure she’s still got the defences up after the dress fiasco. He’s not out of the dog box yet by a long-shot! 😉
The shooting range – yeah, seems a bit of a lapse for her to say that out loud but she’s had a harrowing 24 hours, so maybe she just forgot to be careful. I guess she could cover if anyone heard her by making up something film related – film shooting range? Well, she has come up with weirder explanations in the past.
Love the scene between Amanda and Dotty discussing the lingerie, although why Amanda didn’t send the boys away to take out the trash before they started discussing the matter I don’t know.
I also don’t know why Amanda expects her mother to tell her what she’s doing and what’s in the box. Dotty shouldn’t have to explain herself to anyone. Amanda doesn’t really have “a right to know.” But, Amanda does seem to have a bee in her bonnet today – another symptom of her emotional turmoil. I can see that maybe a couple of days ago, i.e. pre the whole Lee might have a new girlfriend and for some reason it’s bugging the hell out of me thing, Amanda wouldn’t have questioned her mother or been so intense about the box or the romantic weekend away with Hunter Conrad.
Amanda is acutely sensitive to matters of fidelity and the shifting sands of personal friendship right now, and unlike her normal self she seems unable to conceal the upset she feels.
Love the way Philip and Jamie follow the conversation like a tennis match. They both know that Grandma’s off for a romantic weekend and they’re okay with it. I’m sure that Amanda has sensibly and appropriately taught them about the birds and the bees as both are approaching their teenage years. Like I’ve said before, Amanda isn’t a prude and has always seemed to me to have a healthy and appropriate approach to relationship and sexual matters, which makes her behaviour here with Dotty a bit out of character for her. Again, I think this is all brought about by her sudden and personal hyper-awareness of such matters as a result of recent events.
Interesting that Dotty raises the issue of Amanda’s secrets” – “When I ask you questions like this you tell me not to.” I assume she is referring to Amanda’s often unusual work hours. Is Dotty suggesting her that she thinks Amanda is not always working? I like to think that she is. I’ve commented in a previous post that I think that Dotty has long since come to the conclusion that Amanda isn’t just working for film company, that maybe she suspects Amanda’s work does involve secrecy, and to her credit Dotty hasn’t really seriously cross-examined Amanda about this. I think this line reveals that Dotty might also think Amanda might be having “a thing”, and that maybe work isn’t always the reason Amanda keeps odd hours.
Though I think Dotty’s next comment “when you’d sneak in at 3am” refers to when Amanda was much younger, maybe dating Joe?
Yes. Amanda is sounding “very old fashioned” about this. Again, my theory is that a few days ago this would not have bothered Amanda half as much. Is Amanda having a pendulum reaction to events of the last 24 hours? Having perhaps recognised her own jealousy as evidence that she has succumbed to her natural female instincts in regard to Lee, is she now forcing herself to the other extreme and seeing her intense feelings around him as inappropriate and foolish? Now she’s also transferring this disapproval of her own natural instincts onto Dotty’s behaviour.
I think “the coast” is a special place Amanda’s parents would go to for romantic holidays, not to visit Hunter Conrad. For Amanda it is like the memory of her father is being disrespected I think. That also seems to be partly where her disapproval is coming from.
Dotty’s “Yes, Yes, and Yes” is unapologetic. Not only is she unashamed I think she is in her own way telling Amanda to lighten up and maybe take some time for some romance in her own life. I don’t think Amanda takes the message on board though, she’s just too uptight at the moment. She just takes a deep breath and shoves her all upset and emotional turmoil back inside again. Not good – she can’t keep doing that. Sooner or later she’s going to have to acknowledge her feelings and what’s really bothering her.

[edited to fix italics by iwsod-hope I did okay!]

    1. I agree that a lot of Amanda’s discomfort here has to do with the memory of her father. I don’t think it helps, either, that “Mr. Conrad” is someone that Amanda remembers from when she was a child as a friend of her father’s, someone that she was probably taught to respect and look up to. She’s probably having trouble reconciling that image with the image of him as Dotty’s new lover. Amanda looks like she could use some mind bleach about now.

      http://mindbleach.org/

As to whether or not Amanda has any right to ask about what Dotty’s planning, I think that I’ll take the view that she can ask, but only to a certain extent. Dotty is family and lives with her, so I think that’s enough to give Amanda a right to care about what she does, especially if this apparently intimate relationship seemed to come about rather suddenly. I don’t think it would have been bad for Amanda to express some concern and ask if there’s something that she needs to know (like whether this new relationship might end up changing Dotty’s living arrangements). But, because Dotty is an adult and Amanda’s mother, if Dotty doesn’t want to talk about it, Amanda can’t demand answers. I think that probably the best thing would be for Amanda to let Dotty know that she’s open to talking about it if she wants to or needs to.

  10. I think the Dotty situation was deliberately made to ramp up our reaction to the UST between Lee and Amanda. Just in case we couldn’t connect the dots. Remember this was a G rated show and we couldn’t have sweet and innocent Amanda thinking about sexy nightwear…but having Dotty buy it it was almost suggesting the hotness between Lee and Amanda without saying it. Amanda’s reaction show her for once confused and shocked. Really confusing the issue of what she may have been subconsciously thinking when thinking of Lee.
At least that is how I see it……

  11. Oh, lookie! O’Keefe has his own Tibetan ram’s horn!

I love this little scene here with Amanda, her mother and the boys. And the boys are looking very cute here! I think they are supposed to know that Dotty has something that she doesn’t want Amanda or them to know about and that it’s a little racy and to do with a man. After all, she does have that Foxy Grandma sweatshirt – the boys must have given her that. And Amanda does have a “Hot Mama” shirt they gave her, so they’re not completely naïve and innocent.

Dotty’s 3am line confused me too, but not in the same way. I figured it had to do with Amanda when she was a teenager living at home before going to college. And since I don’t see Amanda out till 3am to be with a boy in a “Rebecca’s Fantasies” kind of way, this doesn’t truly make sense. But I get the idea of it, so whatever.

BG is fabulous here in this scene! She delivers her lines flawlessly. I wonder if it took a lot of takes. I’m thinking it didn’t – not on her part anyway.

I don’t get why Amanda is sooo unnerved by all this. I mean I do, but I don’t. C’mon! I can’t believe she is that uptight about her mother going away with a man in order to have a nice romantic weekend. Dotty has been alone for a long time now. Amanda is in her 30’s. I’m glad Dotty said what she said and then just walked off.

I guess Amanda is reacting to all three things – the lingerie with a friend of her dad’s at a location her dad used to go to. It must feel too weird and with everthing topsy turvy in her own life, perhaps she isn’t able to be more understanding.

  13. Poor Amanda! She is just having such a time with so much upheaval and turmoil going on at home and at work. You can just see her trying to regain some sense of equilibrium and make everything right in the world again. She looks as if there is only so much more of this she can take. She is getting hit from all sides. Oddly enough the only person who hasn’t really set her off in this whole episode is Francine, other than that little ‘dangerous creature’ barb which she immediately stated she was only kidding.

I can imagine that some of Amanda’s issues with her mother has to do with how we all view our parents. There is a commercial running here now about finding a babysitter and they have little kids talking about what qualities their babysitters should have. But their reactions when hearing their parents going out on a date is priceless. I remember my own reaction when I realized why our parents would sent us to bed so early some nights. Or why they would suddenly lock their bedroom door. I was horrified. It’s like you know it happens, but you don’t want to think about it for too long.

Love Jamie and Phillip and the looks back and forth. I would think they have it pretty much figured out as to what’s in the box. I would have to take another look at that scene, but I’m thinking they want Dotty to do whatever makes her happy.

  14. So much goodness here, but I was perplexed and alarmed with Amanda saying SHOOTING RANGE with her boys and mother in the house. I know my kids have super sonic hearing when it something they should not hear. Unless, maybe Amanda going by the theory that people pay more attention when you are whispering something. Maybe shouting it was the best choice in this case.
Ohhhhhh I just adore Beverly Garland here. Beautifully done. Amanda’s reaction was over the top and inappropriate and I think she reacting to a combination of all three (especially since Dotty is going with her husband’s friend to a special place that she and her husband shared. Must feel like cheating on some level — at least to Amanda, Dotty has decided she has no problem with it. ) And it must be disheartening to realize your mom’s getting some and you are not. On a selfish note, maybe Amanda is ticked because her live-in babysitter won’t be available all weekend. (Seriously, my spy career and the ability to run off with a super hot guy at a moment’s notice is quite hampered by the fact my mother doesn’t live with me to watch the kids).

    2. I like to think Amanda has developed her style of lying-without-really-lying enough at this point to cover that up…
“You know, it’s where we go to test out new equipment before we have to use it for real. They’re training me on something I haven’t used before, so they wanted me to take some test shots first.”
None of which is technically a lie!
