16/18 Season Three, Episode 03 : Over the Limit- Scarecrow and Mrs King (Blog order-Episode 02)

So the elevator doors closed on feisty Amanda.. and we heard her declare to herself: Not this time buster!!!!
The next thing we see is Lee pouring a glass of wine for Leslie and himself.  Quite the formally set dining table..
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002361361

I know Leslie is going for romance- but I’ll keep this in mind and come back to it! Smile
Lee lifts up the bottle to check out the label as he hears the door behind him open.
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002364964
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002365365
he says very naturally: Amanda,…
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002366166
…I-
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002366566
and catches himself.
Oh boy.. What a magically brilliant moment huh! Smile
Leslie doesn’t seem to mind though – okay come on – who of you wouldn’t mind the guy your crazy about calling out another woman’s name?? I wouldn’t be happy!!! No wonder I don’t trust Leslie!
She isn’t Randi, she isn’t going to act all jealous so early on in their relationship and drive him away me thinks.. she’s too savvy for that (after all she’s a diplomat no?!).
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002367767Lee just cuts off his speech – and squeezes his eyes shut wordlessly – okay everyone- what’s he telling himself here huh?? Do tell!!!!
I’ll have a guess- where the heck did that come from?? I’m having a romantic dinner with this wonderful woman and I called her Amanda?? I’m thinking of Amanda? Noooo! It’s because of that stupid fight.. that might be it.. She’s gone home now, so I can stop thinking about her!
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002368168Leslie enters the room in her new black dress that Lee bought her (gag)  with spaghetti straps..
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002368968Lee gives himself a head shake… yes Lee you have Amanda on the brain…. He doesn’t recover quickly from this slip up (or Freudian slip!!) Looks like Leslie has let her hair down err in more ways than one!
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002369369Lee turns and sees Leslie is wearing the dress.
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002370170
He smiles – but IMHO his reaction doesn’t live up to his earlier imaginings of how grrrrrrr.. ‘great’ this ‘friend’ would look in Amanda’s dress Winking smile
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002370970
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002372172– Hmm maybe in reality something is missing here Lee.. the dress hasn’t given you that same old feeling!!!
(suffer Lee! Winking smile )
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002373773
Ahhh okay.. I suddenly like Leslie– why? because of her next line:  Amanda is very nice, you’re very lucky to have her.
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002376176
I love that standing there introducing Lee to the dress he bought for her, that is a poor copy of the dress Amanda had been wearing- Leslie talks of Amanda and how nice she is, and how lucky he is to have her.
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002376743
Poetic justice for her over familiarity with Amanda IMHO – it’s so ironic it’s brilliant. The dress is all about Amanda and his feelings for her – and Lee trying to put those feelings onto Leslie instead. He’s giving it a good go- and Leslie goes and reminds him how lucky he is to have Amanda? Love it!!!
Do you think Leslie means what she says?? She could very well think Amanda is nice, but Lee is what’s important to her.. and I think she says it hoping he’ll say- No, you are special. Or.. I think she says it to test Lee for a response, because she wants to talk about Amanda and suss out their relationship- I can’t blame her- he did just call her Amanda!!!! I’d be wondering too!!! but interesting to note she disguises this query in a sweet compliment- telling!!! I don’t trust her!! What you see IMHO is not what you get. I think this doesn’t make her not ‘normal’ either – this is not uncommon behaviour when someone is insecure about their relationship no? Hmm..

Call me crazy but it looks like they edited out a kiss here.. Leslie approaches Lee, and looks to be about to give him a kiss on the cheek or something here:
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002376976
and it cuts to Lee standing in front of her but not being held by her.. here:
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002377010
it certainly seems like there has been a lot of changes made around the Leslie character huh!
Lee: yes,…
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002377377
…Amanda is very special.3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002378878

[actually, Leslie said she was ‘nice’ Lee you said Amanda was ‘special’ 😉 – great word too btw – ‘special’ implies that she is not only nice but one of a kind Smile Like her dress!!!!!]
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002379012what do you make of his expression here?

Me thinks Lee really doesn’t want to think about and talk about Amanda right now!!!
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002379946– ugh!! off he goes leading Leslie to the couch.. yeah Lee kissing Leslie may help you forget Amanda.. go on give that a go! haaa..

I love how when Lee sits on the couch he makes a noise- you know like you do when you’re gettin old and have to bend down a long way!!!!!!! haaaaa!!!

Call me crazy, but while Lee motions to Leslie to head over to the couch- she seems to be the one moving in closer, reaching out to touch him..okay he does lean in for the kiss.. and maybe I’m seeing what I want to see – but for me the vibe isn’t that he is pursuing her- something’s missing! Smile
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002388188
Lee: Leslie, I.. errr..
They move in for a kiss… [do I have to include a pic? ohhhh alright!]
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002390590
Phew!!! Saved by the bells! the phone rings..and interrupts them before they kiss! 3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002391391
LOL Look Lee doesn’t even put his right hand around her!! Is it just me seeing this? do tell!!!
What was Lee going to say to her?? I know!! ‘Leslie, I errr want to dump you for Amanda..’ yes that must be it!
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002398598😉
O’Keefe is on the phone.. he tells Lee they have a deal and to come in 30 minutes to his cannery with ‘the girl’. Or no deal..
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002402602You know, baddie or not, I like O’Keefe!!!! I know.. he sorta blew up Hamilton Rawlings, and he sorta wants to kill Lee and Amanda.. but well.. he interrupted Lee and Leslie right before they kissed! Winking smile And then made the deadline in 30 minutes so Lee didn’t get to have his dinner with Leslie haaaa! Smile so he’s not all bad! Smile
Lee responds to O’Keefe’s instructions by clearing his throat and turning from Leslie to say more quietly:
no girl. I come alone.
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002407007[I still think Lee hasn’t shared with Leslie what it is he really does]
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002413813O’Keefe says bring the girl or no deal.
So Lee agrees..and they hang up.

O’Keefe outlines to Tarzan ‘it has to look like just another bombing gone wrong’3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002429429
(yes, because they are such an every day happening??!! lol!! and I love how Tarzan is actually constructing the bomb right there! On O’Keefe’s desk in front of him! rofl!!!)

3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002449049On to the parking lot of Transoceanic Industries and Amanda is on stakeout..
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002459059
Go Amanda! How did she get past the security guard on the gate?

Very kind of the baddies to not keep Amanda waiting there too long!
Amanda sees Tarzan exit the building..
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002465465
She’s looking so pretty again with her hair longer!!!
Tarzan places a bomb next to the sign there..
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002477077
Yeah Lee watching the baddies is pointless.. ahem..
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002479879LOL love how the close up has him put it on stone.. but in the wide shot it’s on the grass!
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002480680Love how the bomb is next to the ‘Authorised Parking only’ sign.. man.. these traffic laws are brutal.. unauthorised parking??? and Kaboom!! 😉
Tarzan heads over to the stack of boxes where
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002496696Amanda is hidden, but not as far as her.
3.03 OVER THE LIMIT.avi_002503103
– thank goodness! Tarzan crouches down and waits for Lee to come along and park illegally!

I will need to pause here.. waiting for Lee to arrive.. Amanda on stakeout, aware the trap has been set.. and wasting her time watching O’Keefe- yeah! right!! Winking smile

Sooo what did you make of Lee and Leslie? lol I think the names together are funny! It’s like Amanda and Armande or something.. tee hee.. too similar! Byeee for now!!!

  1. I like Lee’s little thoughtful pause right after the phone rings and before he answers it. It always seems to me that he’s wondering why he isn’t more disappointed that his kiss was interrupted.

  2. LOL! Amanda!!! Can anyone else hear Boston in their heads? It might be bit early for the whole song, but that one line with her name in it is playing over and over in my head!

Ok, I’ve got to admit here, that I can’t believe Leslie ignores that. It had to have set of some kind of alarm bells in her head. Then again, if Lee buying her a dress this early in a relationship didn’t set off alarm bells, then maybe not. Maybe she’s just too darn excited about this meal of hers that she’s planned. Lee is just not that into it. Too bad, honey.

Lee knows he made a boo boo by saying Amanda’s name. He may be clueless, but he’s not that clueless. I think Lee has done will with the ladies in the past because I think he is Mr. Romantic and likes to focus on a lady and treat her nice and all that. But here he can’t focus on Leslie…poor guy. Right. He is trying to figure out what the heck that was in the hallway out there with Amanda. I think perhaps it may be dawning on him that he really blew it with Amanda. I don’t think he knows why/how he blew it, but he knows he did and he’s thinking about it – even though there is a beautiful woman in his apartment in a spaghetti strap black dress just waiting for him 😉

I think her comment about Lee being lucky to have Amanda is pure diplomacy. I think she wants to avoid Lee’s little slip and move on with Lee. They have limited time together, so she doesn’t want to think about Amanda any more than she has to now that she’s gone.

Aww, Lee’s expression as he says Amanda is very special. I think hearing himself saying it out loud is finally allowing his heart and his brain to realize that they’ve both been thinking this same thing but not telling each other about it.

I don’t know what Lee was going to say to Leslie before she moved in for a smooch, but I think it was going to be either work or Amanda related. Probably work related – hey, I’m expecting a phone call and I might have to leave and mess up your plans for the evening. But I agree, he definitely doesn’t look like he’s into this kiss that Leslie has initiated. The smiles on his face in the caps before just don’t reach his eyes. I do think he is sensing that something is just not right here. I wonder if he feels like this evening feels a bit forced or maybe just forced upon him?

Okay…just love how Amanda conveniently picks the one spot where Tarzan comes to watch out for Lee. It looks like he’s waiting next to a pile of wooden caskets. Ick.

  3. I thought now is a good time to address the Lee and Leslie “did they or didn’t they” issue. There’s so much good comment here on this episode post I thought it would be best to remove that conversation to Ned’s, so I’ve started a thread over there for anyone who wants to discuss. 🙂

  4. I really appreciate all the comments about what a jerk Lee was to both women, because it will make more sense of his behavior in the next scene. He isn’t the obtuse man he used to be. He has enjoyed a measure of right and authentic relationship. He must be aware that he has hurt both these women, and even though I think he made a mistake in dating Leslie, he still was trying to care for her in a real genuine way. I am sure his jerkiness is upsetting even himself.
I am thinking that Amanda was pretty hurt by what had transpired between them that day. She is a forgiving person and I do believe she forgives Lee, but I wonder if she may need some time to be comfortable trusting their friendship again and Lee’s view of her professionally as well.. She may also be struggling with how much hurt she actually has a right to feel. The professional hurt, yes. The personal, maybe not so much because of that “claim” thing (even though we all know she does have the right) That has got to be confusing for her.
I do think that Leslie probably left shortly after Lee left the apartment. I agree she probably left a nice meal for him and put all of her latent hopes into thinking about the party at the Russian Embassy planned for tomorrow night. I am quite sure that when Lee came back to his apartment later that evening he choked on any of the meal that he put in his mouth, if he ate it at all.

    1. I kind of think Leslie might be having second thoughts about their relationship now — who wouldn’t??!! I picture her going home to think about whether this is the time to gracefully withdraw, before she gets dumped, maybe? At least if she’s the one to end it, she gets to preserve some dignity.

  5. Wow missed a lot got busy with kids school stuff. You know the reason I always thought Lee and Leslie were sleeping together were because of this scene and the previous scene. Leslie just lets herself into Lee’s apartment and after his initial fear of someone being there he doesn’t seem peterbed by that at all. That to me suggest a level of intimacy. And unlike some I actually think Leslie is quite lovely. She doesn’t seem pushy to me like she would push a level of a relationship on a man that they weren’t already at. After all she is a diplomat. Her whole life is about dealing knowing how to relate to people, and as for her letting the comment about Amanda slide I think she was being graceful. However, she was probably delicately trying to get Lee to say something about it.

As for Lee I think he tells himself that the reason he is calling Leslie by Amanda’s name is that he is always with Amanda so it is just second nature to be thinking about her. But honestly it is getting quite sickening. Lee is a very smart man, how can he be slow on the uptake? I know he is terrified. I think Amanda is the one person in his life he could not handle losing and if he pursues a relationship with her he risks losing her, but doesn’t he see he is already risking that. By this point Amanda is over her limit, and I just don’t see how Lee could have no clue about that. These two have a very deep connection and I think they know each other better than anyone else in their lives does. He maybe ignoring it, but Lee has to see how irate Amanda is by all this. Denial is one thing, but willful blindness is quite another.

On one hand I do give Lee a pass to a point because as I said in previous post I think Lee just doesn’t know what love really is but on some level he equates it with pain. The few people in his live he has loved has ended in pain, losing his parents, Dorothy’s death, what Eva did to him. I think some people do equate love with pain, and for that reason I think Lee doesn’t want anything do with it. On the other hand it is hard for me to look past him knowingly hurting Amanda.

    1. I like what you said about Lee equating love with pain. It has to be something like that for him because it takes such a hush push for him to acknowledge that that is what is going on with him concerning Amanda.

  6. Hello!

My personal take on poor Lee’s mistake (and yes, to me it’s “poor Lee”, LOL) is that he’s not even thinking of Amanda once he’s mixed up the names – I think he’s too busy worrying about what’s going to happen next! He’s got a girl in his apartment who went to the time and trouble of preparing a romantic evening for two, and within a few minutes of them being alone, he calls her by another woman’s name. I think he’s basically wishing for a desk to bang his head against, a conveniently timed distraction (where’s someone shouting snake when you need them, LOL), SOMETHING, anything, to avoid what he probably figures is going to happen next, which is going to be some kind of reaction on her part. Will she cry, scream, pitch a fit, throw a drink in his face (at least he’s probably safe from any lines that start “and frankly Ricky Joe…”, I agree, I don’t think they’ve been intimate yet)…whatever’s coming next, I figure he figures it’s got to be bad, so I think he’s just preparing himself for it, or at most, calculating plans for damage control.

As for why I say poor Lee…and yes, I admit it’s been years since I saw the episode, so my apologies if I get something wrong…he came home in a good mood. He and his friend (best friend? I would call her that) are in a great mood, having a great time. Suddenly, they’re put in crime fighter mode by an open door, and , guess what? It’s the girl he’s been seeing – and she’s there – with Amanda – they’ve seen each other – they’re TALKING to each other…eep! Add to that that then he and Amanda have a fight, and now he’s called Leslie by Amanda’s name, which means he’s probably about to have a fight with her, not to mention an awkward conversation with Amanda at some point if she ever finds out…Oh, my, now there’s an interesting form of revenge by an angry girlfriend…”oh, so it’s Amanda your thinking of, is it? Well, maybe I should go over there and have this out with her!”

Sorry for the length of this comment – think it’s long enough for my first one here? 😉

  7. Haha, Lee gets his payback for the way he treats Amanda. How embarrassing, to call his lady friend by the wrong name! I bet he is especially proud of keeping track of his women, too. I love BB’s facial reactions to this moment — they are humorous, but say so much. I wonder if he is trying to hint that this is an eye-opening moment for Lee? Because I think it is an eye opener. Even though he is not processing everything it means at the moment, I don’t think he’ll ever be able to go back to where he was before. This is the moment that reveals to him, beyond any possibility of denial, how deeply Amanda has sunk into his life. I like everyone’s guesses at what’s going through Lee’s thoughts here; I think his brain is going a mile a minute.

Regarding Lee not taking his jacket off — he can’t! He’s got a gun in his waistband that he apparently doesn’t want Leslie to see, even if he did tell Amanda that she can guess what he does. Is he wearing his shoulder holster as well? I rather think that when he drew the gun it wasn’t from a shoulder holster, but I really couldn’t see. It would be awkward to try to explain. Of course, if he really wanted to get out of the jacket, he could have disposed of the gun while Leslie was changing. Maybe since he’s expecting a call he wants to keep ready; it would be awkward to gather up holster and gun in front of Leslie as well. However, I prefer the explanation that he deliberately doesn’t want to get too “comfortable”; he leaves the gun on so he has a good reason for leaving his jacket on.

    1. Maybe that’s why he doesn’t put both arms around her either. If they are going to make out on the couch you’d think she’d eventually feel his gun (and that isn’t a euphemism LOL). So maybe he’s trying to avoid that by keeping that side of his body away from her. He’s left handed so I’d think he would keep his gun holstered on his right side. But that does come back to what I said earlier… he cruelly threw it in Amanda’s face that not only would Leslie understand what he does, she’s educated and connected enough to guess it on her own. He also implies to Amanda that he’s fine with her guessing (which implies a certain intimacy) But the reality is, Leslie doesn’t know and he’s trying to make sure she doesn’t so it was just mean to say that to Amanda.

    2. All the more reason why surprise visits from women friends who aren’t part of every part of his life isn’t going to work.
I think this episode isn’t just about Lee’s feelings for Amanda but also the beginning of the end of Lee’s compartmentalization of his life. If Lee wants something deeper in his life (and I think he does) he is going to have to integrate his life. But that means confronting some fears. It is kind of like it is the next step after BAI.

    3. Good point about the gun. I had forgotten about that. All the more reason to leave his jacket on, and I agree he could have taken it off when Leslie was out of the room but I think he has deliberately chosen to leave his jacket both because he anticipates going out again, and to conceal the gun of course.
But, yeah, they aren’t really going to be able to get hot ‘n heavy if he’s trying to keep her from knowing he is carrying a gun, which suggests to me he is confident they won’t be getting particularly intimate – well, not before dinner at any rate 😉 But I don’t think after dinner either, regardless of whether the phone rings or not. When will he get a chance to remove his gun and holster – only if he goes into another room in the apartment without Leslie. Having her at his apartment is tricky, tricky. As Morley says : All the more reason why surprise visits from women friends who aren’t part of every part of his life isn’t going to work.
When he concealed the gun this was clearly meant to show that Leslie definitely doesn’t know what he does for a living. What has he told her? He’s probably told her the most obvious cover – he works for a government film company, IFF. Whilst she’s not a Randi-baby, for the time-being Leslie is very much on the edges of his life. How long can he keep her there?

  8. No matter how many times I see it, I laugh out loud ever time I hear Lee say ‘Amanda’. Of course part of that is because I’m happy she’s on his mind but mostly because I enjoy seeing him squirm externally in dealing with calling Leslie the wrong name and internally annoyed that he can’t shake her from his head. He was a jerk to Amanda in the last scene and frankly he’s being a jerk to Leslie in this one. He buys her a dress but can’t show any interest in it when she tries it on. She makes him dinner and he can’t even take his coat off. They go over to the couch to make out and he doesn’t even put his arm around her. If I was Leslie I’d be feeling really stupid about now. So as far as I’m concerned Lee can be as uncomfortable and confused as possible. He made this bed now he can toss and turn in it. The phone call makes me wonder about Lee’s comment that Leslie can guess what he does. Either that’s not true or she’s being rude here. If she knows he’s a spy or at least suspects it, she should get up off the couch and let him talk in private when it’s clear it’s a work conversation. I think Lee would have been around her enough to know whether or not Leslie suspects what his job really is. So if she doesn’t really know then throwing ‘She can guess what I do’ in Amanda’s face is even ruder than I thought. I wish we could have seen the scene when Lee tells Leslie he has to go. I suspect he was pretty happy about it. And while that makes me happy in terms of his relationship with Amanda, it’s just another reason Lee is a real jerk in these last two scenes.

  9. Am I the only one who thinks there was a conversation between Lee and Leslie before she went to change and Lee poured the wine? I think when Lee returned, she was back in the kitchen checking on the food. She says things like “Amanda seems like a lovely person. How long has she been your secretary?” etc. Lee responds with “We’ve been working together for a couple of years now.” All of which revolved around Leslie wanting to know Lee more and using Amanda as the topic to do it. He probably shares a few light moments about working with her, the fact that she’s a mother, etc. All of which leads to the “Amanda” and Leslie saying “You’re lucky to have her.” Leslie thinking that “she’s a mother so she’s not someone I need to worry about.” Lee thinking “What got into Amanda?” and “I hope she goes home like I asked.”

I do think he’s not very engaged in the evening. And, I think that he was going to say, “Leslie, I may have to leave early due to work.” I notice that Leslie looks down after he says “Amanda,” and she looks down again when he says “no girl.” It’s as if she knows something is going on here (undercurrents a-plenty), but doesn’t want to rock the boat by asking. (Getting a little ahead, but – I’m sure she had a lovely dinner waiting on Lee to come back, then left dinner in the oven with a note when she left.) Maybe I’ll do a filler fanfic for this when I get my portfolio done for class.

    1. I always kind of figured that Leslie possibly had to hear some of Lee and Amanda’s hallway conversation. It did get a little heated out there. Surely if Leslie was curious about Amanda and her “status” with Lee, she might have moved closer to the door to do a little eavesdropping?

  10. I watch this scene and I sit telling Lee to TAKE OFF YOUR JACKET. Is he not staying? 😉 Who sits and smooches wearing the jacket…….he’s cracked open the wine, he’s staying for dinner and he still doesn’t remove it.

What’s he thinking? A few things I suspect. That inward wince looks like “oh my I am gonna pay for that later” to “oh crap I said Amanda. Why did I say Amanda? It’s because I am still annoyed after our fight. But it came out so naturally and I was happy saying it. It wasn’t said with annoyance but with affection. Doesn’t meant anything. It’s just habit because I work with her. Yeah that’s it. Got to be it. Reaaaaaaly hope Leslie didn’t hear me”…..
Love what Morley said about the volcano being ready to blow. Sure is bubbling away 🙂
I can’t decide whether they deliberately made Leslie look really buttoned up and school marm-ish so it’s a complete contrast to her “something more comfortable” look.
Lee look when he sees her seems a poor attempt at genuine. Could be he’s waiting for payback about mentioning Amanda’s name but it definitely lacks anything sensual which is the reaction I’d be going for if I was Leslie.
Leslie is a cool customer, many women would have flipped but she tests his reaction with her comments about Amanda. Love how Lee goes one further about saying how special she is 😀 oops Lee might be letting your hand show there 😉
The kiss. Not great for obvious reasons and it feels like a diversion tactic to me. And then his jacket bugs me too so am as glad as Lee is when the phone rings 😉

  11. “what’s he telling himself here huh?? Do tell!!!!”
I think he’s telling himself “You nimrod. You have x many black books. You are more than capable of keeping names straight. This hasn’t happened before. WTF?!?!?” (Yes, I know how many black books, but we aren’t told until a later episode. I’m trying to be good, for once.)

“Look Lee doesn’t even put his right hand around her!! Is it just me seeing this?”
Nope, it’s not just you. He leaves his right arm resting on his leg… certainly doesn’t seem to be giving the endeavour his best effort/full attention… Then again, he was interrupted before it started to get steamy–maybe he was just winding up? shrug I’m sure I’m missing a great witticism here but it’s been a long day… 😦

“and I love how Tarzan is actually constructing the bomb right there! On O’Keefe’s desk in front of him!”
Not only that, he’s building the bomb right in front of O’Keefe’s whatever-the-heck-is it? Tea set? How about some milk and sugar with your plastique?

“How did she get past the security guard on the gate?”
Told him she was there for the movie sequel? shrug Repeat after me: “Plot hole, schmot hole. Where’s the chocolate?!?” I’m spending more time wondering how in the heck she got into the middle of all the crates/drums? Did she go in through a tunnel? Or is there actually a way in on the left–it seems blocked on the right? Meh. Who’s hogging the chocolate?

“LOL love how the close up has him put it on stone.. but in the wide shot it’s on the grass!”
You know what I love about the bomb? That it’s a different bomb!!! The one Tarzan carries outside, lowers to the ground, and leaves on the grass has black sides. The bomb in the close-up on the concrete has grey sides. I guess it’s a chameleonic bomb–but, then, it should have turned green on the grass. rolleyes Now I really do need the chocolate…

    1. Actually, I guess the “black sides” are the duct tape (?) Tarzan removes, chews (:D), and then throws away when he walks away (litter bug!!!) after arming the bomb by sticking the probe into the plastique(?)–but it’s still magically back on the bomb after Tarzan’s walked away.

    2. Whooo… and Tarzan’s watch morphs in the close-up too! It’s got a black-surround face in the close-up of the-bomb-on-the-concrete but we see in other moments that the watch he’s wearing has a silver-surround face. :p

    3. “Told him she was there for the movie sequel.” ROFL! And yep, I agree with you KC, Lee is not giving this his all by any means. His attention is wandering off after Amanda, their conversation, “that look” that Lee knows, and the dress just isn’t making the cut for him. He’s one confused man right now. Huge grin on my face as I revel in Lee’s bemusement. Oh joy! Chocolate in hand she heads back down the bunny hole to rewatch this scene.

    4. Just why is Tarzan building this bomb anyway? Didn’t they hire Mangusson for his expertise in bomb building, or was this one left over? Or maybe they just hired Mangusson to be the fall guy? Plot holes, smot holes … where’s my chocolate?

  12. Yep, O’Keefe’s impeccable timing may elevate him to top 5 baddie, we shall see. Ha ha ha! Leslie’s reaction to being interrupted on the couch lends weight to my (hopefully not mistaken) belief that they have not slept together yet and she was hoping this was going to be the night. I do feel sorry for Leslie. She has been dating Lee and probably thinks she is his girl friend and definitely getting signals from him that she is special (ie the dress). Good Lord Lee, you really SUCK!

My view is: maybe they did and maybe they didn’t. and I don’t want to spend any time contemplating it 😉 teee heee…

        1. Nope. The didn’t, because he couldn’t… That is all I know. And I like it like that. Lee doesn’t though, tee hee. What’s the matter with him? I bet that is what is bugging him so much. Well,we know and I think he does too… uh oh, there is that sub conscious/ pre- conscious/ conscious thing coming up again…. Did I already make a comment like this earlier? I bet I did.

  13. Remember in the discussions about VM we talked about the sub conscious/preconscious/conscious? Well I think the volcano is about to blow. I think everything that was building in “poor” Lee’s subconscious, and what has been becoming active in his preconscious is now erupting into his conscious. Pretty soon the crust will be completely broken through and it is going to freely flow. I think that is what the “Amanda” was. A bubble up of the subconscious stuff.
I do think the argument he just had with Amanda out in the hall was swirling around in his mind as he was pouring the wine. He had a few minutes alone there and I am sure he couldn’t quiet his thoughts about what transpired. I also wonder if he read any of the jealousy, was he wondering about that? Or was he worried about Amanda going off on her own? The fact that he was so preoccupied with Amanda that he let that slip out, lends credence to me that it really was insomnia that kept him up all those nights.
I love the way you described the introduction of Leslie in The Dress while talking about Amanda. Ha! That plan backfired on Lee so terribly. “poor Lee”
And on the couch, it always seems to me that Lee is going to pat Leslie on the shoulder. I always wonder what he was going to say. I wonder if he was going to address the awkward situation, or say something about the fact that he may have to cut the evening short because of work. But I think he chickens out and just tries to fix it (the awkward situation, or the awkward way he feels due to his messed up emotional situation) with that kiss. But like you said even that doesn’t work because the phone rings. I am relived, but I think Lee may be as well.
I wonder what Leslie thought when she heard him say “no girl”? Was she connecting dots and including Amanda? It links to Amanda’s comment about Leslie not understanding what Lee does, it may even punctuate it for Lee. I wonder if he had a thought about what that moment would be like if Amanda had been there instead. I don’t know if that would have been a helpful thought for Lee, that would be fraught with all sorts of implications. Amanda being put in danger? Amanda being with him in his apartment? How his comment about getting Francine to double for her would have stung Amanda? There is just nothing that is going to settle Lee right now, I think. Poor Lee, 🙂

    1. Excellent commentary Morley. You’ve covered most of what I was going to follow up on later today. Cool! You’ve said it so I don’t have to. 🙂 especially re what he was possibly going to say to Leslie before she went to kiss him.

    2. I’ve also been wondering what Leslie was thinking during the phone conversation. It would make sense if she thought Lee was talking about her since she’s the only girl there, although she could have guessed that it might be about Amanda. I thought that it looked like Leslie tried to tap Lee on the shoulder while he was on the phone. I wonder if she was going to ask him if he was talking about her. It wouldn’t surprise me if she had a few questions for him after he hung up.

    3. I think you’re right Morley, the sub-conscious to conscious process is well advanced now and I think the events of this day so far must soon force Lee to finally acknowledge, at least to himself, the real reasons for his inner turmoil.
Your thoughts about what was going through Lee’s mind as he poured the wine ring true – he would be recalling the argument and beginning to wonder about the real source of Amanda’s irritation with him, and he’ll be a little worried about whether she has followed his advice to “go home”.
We’ve so far seen him quite obviously suffering the effects of his inner turmoil (e.g. insomnia, pre-occupation, and thoughtlessness) and this latest incident with Leslie and Amanda and the subsequent argument with Amanda has had the effect of instantly and exponentially ramping up this turmoil. In this state, his physical actions are on automatic as he pours the wine, his thoughts are clearly elsewhere as revealed by his faux pas.
What was he going to say when he and Leslie sat on the couch? Well, having successfully (or so he thinks) escaped any fall-out from his faux pas, I doubt he would risk bringing it back to Leslie’s attention. 😉 I always thought he was going to warn her that their evening may be cut short as he may have to go back to work (if the phone call comes through from O’Keefe). His words and his tone don’t really sound as though he is about to say something romantic, and as Bitsybeans has pointed out, he still has his jacket on. Okay, maybe he just hasn’t got around to taking it off but he could have removed it while Leslie was in the other room putting the dress on, so it could be argued he is leaving himself prepared to go out again at a moment’s notice. Maybe deep down (or not so deep down now, if you are right Morley) he wants an excuse to go out rather than stay with Leslie this evening.

More proof that Lee really isn’t thinking straight here and hasn’t been for pretty much the entire episode. The fact that he can delude himself into thinking that Amanda will actually go home and do nothing else shows that his mind isn’t on her and her reactions. (Right now, I think he’s too busy thinking about his own.) He should know her well enough by now to figure out that she isn’t going to let things go just because he tells her to. She definitely has “that look.” 😉

But, it would make sense that part of his mind would be trying to tell him that Amanda is probably heading out to do something dangerous and that at this moment, he should really be with her (for more reasons than one). 😉

    4. Like your volcano metaphor here, Morley. I get that. After watching this scene, I don’t think Lee read any jealousy in it from Amanda. At least not initially. I think if he did read any jealousy, it wasn’t until much later.

  14. Agree with you Iwsod, Leslie is very good at “catching flies with honey”. I know women like her, they are not bad people but they are very cunning at appearing to be sweet and friendly when they are in fact fishing for info, or pretending not to be p.o’d, or playing politics, or sticking the knife into your back… oh y’know, the usual gamut of day to day human behaviours and small deceptions.
Overall Leslie is probably a nice, well thought of person, but she is not at all secure in this new relationship and she is in charm overdrive.
Yes, a very formal dinner going on there. Formal dinner, formal Leslie, casual Scarecrow/Lee. I agree with Debilyn’s comment in the last post – we are seeing Scarecrow/Lee here and in the previous post. Not as badly behaved as Scarecrow, but not the real man that Lee Stetson is either.
Doesn’t look like it will be very a relaxing dinner actually – maybe Leslie’s usual style is more along the lines of formal dinner parties, receptions, etc. Even with her hair down she still comes across as very practised and polished and diplomatic, but I strongly feel that we don’t really get to see the “real” Leslie, and I don’t think Lee has met her yet either.
What is he thinking when he realises his wee faux pas – I’m thinking his very first thought is “Sh&t!” 😉 I smile every time I see this because it’s one of those moments where you kind’ve panic and think “Edit Undo” or “Control Z” – you know, the commands on your computer that will undo the last action/s you input. I do that when I spill stuff too – Doh! Edit Undo.
Then there’s that sinking feeling when you realise you can’t Undo. I think that is Lee’s next feeling, then “Damn! Where the hell did that come from? Damn it, Amanda! Get your act together Stetson.” Deep breath, turn and face the music (Leslie) – I think he is expecting maybe a negative reaction here from Leslie and is prepared to turn on the old nothing unusual just happened charm but he doesn’t need to as Leslie appears to take it all in good grace.
I think he would have thought of Amanda but it wouldn’t have been a fully formed thought, more a fleeting thought laced with high emotion, hence “Damn it, Amanda!”
Lee definitely covers a sense of disappointment at the sight of Leslie in the dress – it’s like he knows in his heart that something significant is missing. And as you say Iwsod, his next words reveal his real feelings – “Yes, Amanda is very special.” Not just special, mind, very special. More good fodder for him to reflect on later.
His actions in leading Leslie to the couch, sitting down, not really embracing her, not being the one to lean into the kiss – it always feels like to me he is inwardly recoiling from the part he has to play here. I think the events that have just played out have very much heightened his sense of Something’s not right here, this isn’t what I want, how can I make it right, I must be able to make it right, I can’t make it right. With all these feelings swirling about, it’s no wonder he’s not really engaging with Leslie.
Gotta go but back later to share more. Looking forward to reading everyone else’s take on this scene. 🙂

    1. I love the comment about wishing life had an “Edit Undo.” I could definitely use that! Actually, what I really wish is that life had a Save function. That way, you could quickly save your spot if you think you’re about to do something stupid and load it again if it doesn’t work out well.

    2. Oh I like your comments about Leslie. I knew people like her too who could (to put it bluntly) stab you in the back while smiling sweetly at you from the front. But then I always thought that was also partly to do with being a diplomat, turn up the charm to 100; appear nice, friendly, non-threatening, unfortunately, having dealt with people who just wanted to shaft me (whoops, am I allowed to write that here) I wouldn’t trust her an inch! But then I’ve always been biased towards Amanda & Lee.
