9/12 Season Three, Episode 04: Tail of the Dancing Weasel- Scarecrow and Mrs King (Morley’s order: Episode 03)

On to Amanda’s home that night where Amanda calls the number on Harry’s card..
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001741908

This magazine on Amanda’s coffee table had me curious! I think I found it Smile
Sept 1986What do you think? I’m surprised that Amanda and Dotty had this mag left on their coffee table! [I think it was there earlier when they were doing sit ups as well] Actually, now that I look at it – Cosmopolitan in 1985 was pretty tame compared to now- sheesh! I’m guessing KJ bought it for the article on ‘tinsel town- a gritty novel about television!’
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_0017435103.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001746312Anyway, Amanda’s phone call to Harry comes through to the Q bureau on that unmarked line and Lee picks up! eek!!! Hey I like the Eiffel tower snow globe!
Poor Amanda.. she can’t see what we can see in the Q bureau.. Lee without his tie.. lookin good.. Mmmmm..!
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001749716Lee answers:
Yeah! Stetson here!
[lol didn’t he notice it was the unmarked line? why did he answer it like normal? oh well..]
Amanda: Leeeeee???? What are you doing there?
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001750383Lee: Amanda hold on, hold on.. I’m getting some feedback here..
[Love how Lee knows it’s Amanda from her voice alone 🙂  ]
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001751518(he looks down at the phone.. we can hear mumbled male voices)
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001756322Amanda: ah, well look, I’ll see you tomorrow.
[Hmm interesting! she repeats Lee’s line to say bye to Amanda in previous scene]
Amanda quickly hangs up..
[ So is Amanda left thinking that Lee is with Harry? and that he has found him? Lee doesn’t say he is in the Q bureau.. hmm]
ha haaa Lee does his looking down the phone line trick! Smile
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001757891Lee to himself:
What the?
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001759225We cut to Lee finally listening to that very boring looking tape recorder hooked to the phone line.. yep nothing suspicious about that! Winking smile not!! [don’t all desks have that? Winking smile ]
the tape plays back-
male voice: Kolinsky?
another male voice: Yeah.
male voice: tomorrow at 2. lets meet.
click.
male voice: Kolinsky?
Francine: ahhh who shall I say is calling?
click.
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001770737
Lee is on the case! He now knows Amanda called on that unmarked line.. and has another piece of the puzzle..but I don’t think he’s figured it out yet.?

There’s a large chunk that’s been taken out of the script  here– Amanda hurries to get off the phone because there is a loud crash outside her house – it’s Buck and he’s crashed his car onto her front lawn.. and he’s drunk and freezing in his open top convertible in the middle of the night in his bathing suit!!!

Someone like to transcribe it?? Go for it! Seems they didn’t have Buck in mind to be a love interest for Amanda – ever!!!Or at most he would have been interested in her and a pest! but there is no way an alternative love interest would be a drunk driver!!! though I did love how Amanda helps Buck and tells him he is ‘an idiot’ (even if it would be a bit out of character!)
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001781548On to IFF the next day and Amanda walks along the corridor into the bullpen. She comes across Lee and Billy talking about the case in the bullpen. Billy tells Lee they are hunting down Thornton.. and Lee is off the case because he is too close.. and they head into Billy’s office and close the door…whooo.. wait a second.. Lee in jeans! Lee in jeans!  Amanda  picks up a phone outside Billy’s office to listen in on Lee and Billy discussing the case..
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001800367
Amanda if you want to go unnoticed, don’t wear red!!! Winking smile Ummm…. They are in Billy’s office- with the door closed.. ??? Uh oh.. someone should tell Billy that his walls are too thin! There’s a gap in security! So ridiculous.. at least accidentally leave the door open a crack so it looks feasible! [the door is partly open in the script!!]   oh no wait.. I know what this is.. that is a magic telephone! You pick it up.. and suddenly you can hear through Billy’s wall!
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001803570
Billy tells Lee about Gregory sounding him out about Harry. Ohhh okay.. I could have sworn it was Billy that raised the topic of Harry! Remember? Billy said: ‘okay, how does the name Harry V. Thornton grab you’ lol!
Billy: ..Harry has been retired for 10 years! And all of a sudden his ID has been used twice. Illegally!
(love the low camera angle.. to indicate someone’s listening in, it proves Billy’s office has a roof Winking smile and it makes Lee and Billy look like they are the same height Winking smile Oh and err a great view of THE jeans… ahaogaaboahbbs.. )
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001813580Lee: I don’t know. I was at records all night (huh? I thought he was in the Q bureau.. whatev) …every single file of Harry’s is gone. Twenty four years worth. It’s like he was never director at all!!
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001820387
[anyone good with numbers? how does the twenty four years fit?]
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001823590
We cut to Amanda pretending to be on the phone, but looking like she is listening in haaa.. we hear Lee’s voice: how do you explain that?!
[Well, I can’t explain being able to hear Lee’s voice outside the closed office!]
Back in the office Lee continues:
have you ever heard of a Kolinsky? It’s a code name, 30 years old. But active.
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_0018279943.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001832399Billy hasn’t heard of it.
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001833600Lee: yeah Crawford did. He’s got Harry’s phone set up in some way.
[whoaaaaaaa!! read my comments below!!!]
Back outside to eavesdropping Amanda..
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001837604Back to Lee: two calls for Kolinsky so far. 3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001846813Crawford was the last one to check the computer for that name, I ran a little search myself. There’s 3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001848415an old seal on it Billy- permission required from….
Billy finishes the sentence:
Harry V. Thornton!
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001848815Lee: you got it!
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001850417
Billy: I’m putting the agency on a second level security profile!

(whooooo err what’s that?! Winking smile )
Back outside.. and the lady whose desk houses the magic telephone (Jill!! rofl!!)  returns to her desk.. as we hear Billy finish telling Lee:
you tell Amanda she’s out of a job until it’s off.
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001855622Amanda pretends on the phone: Thank you Mother!!!
and hangs up.. rofl!!! too funny!
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001857624Lee sees Amanda walking away from 3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001860827Billy’s office as Billy reassures Lee he’ll help Harry in any way he can…
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001861227
Ohhh Amanda, sneaking around in red and with big hair is just not gonna cut it! Winking smile
Lee doesn’t let on to Billy what he saw though: sooo you won’t mind if I get a little shut eye and some breakfast?  [whoooo is Lee gonna eat a baddie for breakfast?!]
I love that Lee doesn’t let on to Billy that Amanda is hiding something.. and Billy was present earlier when Amanda was acting weirdly in the hallway! I see Lee as looking after Amanda here by not involving others.. because he wants to protect her, but also because he trusts her 🙂 me like!!
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_0018636303.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001865632Billy: be my guest!
Lee heads off tired and hungry huh.. and on a mission to figure out what Amanda is up to! I guess Lee’s insomnia is gone..(Remember Over the Limit?) .. and Lee still looks gorgeous after missing one night’s sleep now.. the blue leather jacket is wrong.. but on Lee? It looks really good!!! I love this colour on him! eek!!

Is it just me or does anyone else find this scene between Lee and Billy strange?!

They talk about Harry, and how many years he worked.. and about his ID being used.. so they know the guy is involved somehow.. but then Lee mentions ‘Kolinsky’ being a 30 year old code name (and my goodness Harry has been in the business so long- they just happened to mention that fact!).. and that there had been two calls for Kolinsky – on Harry’s phone!!! Lee says on Harry’s phone!!! how did he know that phone line was Harry’s phone number re-routed at this point? it’s unmarked. and when Amanda called she didn’t ask for Harry, she said Lee’s  name – I think it’s obvious Harry is connected to Kolinsky even if he isn’t Kolinsky, because how many spies are wandering around that have been in the game that long and who’s ID has been used twice and has been shown to still have active clearance! .. if Lee knows somehow that is Harry’s phone, then it’s obvious Harry is Kolinsky!

This really makes no sense at all to me, unless Lee has already put the pieces together, but doesn’t fill in Billy- just weird! If he knew Harry was Kolinsky why would he ask Billy about ‘a Kolinsky’? Hmm… I wondered if Lee was suppose to say it was Larry’s phone.. not Harry’s lol! I checked the script and there is no mention of Harry’s or Larry’s phone, only that two calls for Kolinsky came in.. I think it’s a boo boo!! what do you think?! [A big one, it messes with the plot. I’ll just pretend I didn’t hear it! Smile ]

Amanda heads out to her car..
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001872038
where are they parking agency cars these days? weird.. and there is a note under her windscreen wiper..
oh I know I know! The note says ‘next time- put your car windows up when you leave it- or someone is going to take it??!!’
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001880847
no?? but she’s still leaving them down!! oh 3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001882449Amanda.. this lying to Lee thing has got you in a tizzzz…it’s even made her nails suddenly grow again! eek!!  ok ok.. the note really says ‘come see me!’ again – and there’s a map..
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001884851
So off Amanda goes.. with the vette following her!
3.04 TAIL OF THE DANCING WEASEL.avi_001904471
haaaaa.. come on!!.. how could she not notice THAT man… in THAT car!! Sheesh!!!  She really is in a tizzz!!!!

Well that will do for this post for now! I’m looking forward to hearing what you guys think.. and if anyone wants to transcribe drunk Buck the neighbourhood menace feel free Winking smile [that or head over to www.smk-land.com and check out the script!] byeee for now!

  1. I have never caught that line about “Tell Amanda she’s out of a job till it’s over” and I have to say I don’t like it!

  2. The Cosmo magazine? I think it was Dotty’s idea to buy it. She wants to know if she’s decadent and just what goes behind the scenes at 60 minutes… 😉 I don’t see Amanda buying this mag. But then again, maybe the new and improved S3 would buy it. I still don’t see her leaving it out for the boys to see. Articles she wants to read? ALL of them on the left hand side.

Oh yeah, I’m not a fan of that nightgown style either. Give me soft cotton with no lace, buttons, zippers, ties or seams up the middle, down the back , across the shoulders, or around my wrists. And I loathe wearing dresses, and that includes sleeping in them. If I’m not planning on sleeping, that’s another story. For another blog.

Wow, Lee’s hair looks pretty good for this late at night! I guess he’s not been running his hands through it. And neither has anyone else 😉
Uh oh, Lee has another piece of the puzzle. It won’t be long until he figures it out!! I think by the time he goes into Billy’s office, he has a pretty good idea that Harry has contacted Amanda and he is the one who has asked her to keep an eye on Lee. That look he gives her as he notices her walking away from Billy’s office in that BRIGHT RED jacket (duh!) is very telling to me. I see a hint of a smile, as in he’s thinking I know what you’re up to Amanda King, ha ha ha, no more spying on me! I think Lee doesn’t say anything to Billy because he doesn’t think Billy needs to know. And even though he thinks he knows what going on with Amanda, he hasn’t actually caught her with Harry. So for now, he leaves it out. It’s between him, Amanda, and Harry.

Oh gosh, glad someone’s got a brain on the show and didn’t include the idiotic Buck scene.

Love Lee in his jeans in Billy’s office. Do you think they purposely chose this camera angle to show off Lee in his jeans on purpose? I think they did for sure! C’mon, have we ever seen this angle in this office before? It’s because of the jeans!! Gotta keep those lady viewers drooling!

Yep, Jill…of many trades! They use her a ton! Looks like she lost her job at Save Our Bay when Lee and Amanda put the baddie out of business and got re-hired at the Agency.

  3. I never really thought that much about the nightgown. I just figured it was typical for Amanda. Considering what her life has been like and that whole discussion with Dotty about Rebecca’s Fantasies I wouldn’t figure that she would have too much sexiness going on in the nightgown department. If anything I could see her in a t-shirt and shorts at best.

I’m thinking that Amanda is looking very pretty in these close ups and well, Lee…is always just ever so, but more so in this episode in general. Every post thus far has had some Lee scrumptiousness in it somewhere. My lack of commenting has been due to the constant scrolling back and forth of all the Lee goodness.

Since Amanda had a pretty good head start on Lee in leaving the Agency. I always wondered how he got to his car first and was waiting before Amanda even got to hers. Maybe there’s a short cut that he took that Amanda doesn’t know about because she is not a full agent and it’s on a need to know basis.

  4. Ok, color me “miscued.” I have never paid attention to what Amanda was wearing when she called Harry. I guess I always assumed she was in some work shirt. Obviously, I was more focused on Lee. 🙂

  5. Now, if Harry started the Agency in 1954 and was Director for 24 years (assuming he was the first Director) that would mean he retired from the Agency in 1978. He took Lee on in 1973. I guess it all works out time wise in that regard. But if he’s been retired for 10 years, then he would have had to retire in 1975, which doesn’t work out if he was Director for 24 years from 1954.
If the code name Kolinsky has been around for 30 years, I assume we are supposed to conclude that around 1955 Harry started his double agent work for the Russians.
So the Russians thought (still think?) he was head of the Agency and a double agent working for them. Wow, that’s a pretty good double agent to have on your side! Someone who is actually in charge, not just one of the agents. But of course what they don’t know is that Harry is a triple agent – pretending to work for the Agency pretending to work for the Russian but really working for the Agency against the Russians by pretending to work for the Russians. And he has continued the ruse for another 7 years.
All makes perfect sense to me. 🙂
A “second level security profile” seems to mean anyone who doesn’t have the right level of security clearance or above is immediately shut out (literally) of the Agency until the crisis is over. Does that mean all the girls in the steno pool get a holiday too? And the janitor (Rag Mop), and those already redundant guards at the door into the bullpen? I hope it’s paid leave – who knows how long this could go on before they figure out what’s going on. Weeks, months? Thank goodness they have Scarecrow and Mrs King, who can be relied upon to sort everything out in 46 minutes every week! 🙂
I think they are proceeding on the assumption, with all the evidence gathered so far from Billy’s little talk with Gregory, Crawford and what has been discovered in the Q-Bureau, and the involvement of Harry somehow, that the Russians might have a corridor of access into the Agency which, of course, would totally compromise national security. So I suppose it is serious and the “second level security profile” is a sensible move.
PS Iwsod – ultra swoony pic of Lee as he spies Amanda in the bullpen walking away from Billy’s office. I can usually be relied upon to resist the eye candy in favour of following the plot (such as it is) but on this occasion….. swoon…thud! 😯

    1. Love that you figured out the timing kiwismh.. I think my brain copes okay with the logical flow of a plot, but give me a timeline?? or dates?? and I get dizzy!!!! so grateful that others can take this on and fill us in!

  6. Amanda is going to have to lose them frumpy balloon night gowns if she ever wants to share a bed with Lee Stetson! 😉 Honestly, I don’t know how she can stand to sleep in that much material. It’d bound you up like a straitjacket before morning (unless Amanda is a particularly immobile sleeper, i.e. doesn’t move or turn over in her sleep).
It’s a petty point but the way they put Amanda in such overly frumpy night attire has always bugged me. Why not just a normal, more flattering, nightgown? Not the dowdy full sleeve, high collar, 1860’s Little House on the Prairie jobbie.
Given the very attractive, often low cut evening dresses she wears, why so much material for going to bed? Expect me to have another rant about this in Wizard – you all know what scene. 😉
Even worse in this scene to have Lee at the other end of the line looking just too sexy for his shirt (or at least too sexy for his tie this evening). I guess they wanted to remind us of the different worlds these two still inhabit. But please, a little more subtlety would go a long way. No need to hit us over the head with it. We get it!
My take on the Cosmo mag is that Dotty brought it and has given it to Amanda to read in the hopes that Amanda will be inspired to put herself out there a bit more. Even if it just inspires her to retire all them frumpy nightgowns, I will be happy. Maybe there’s an article in there about night attire – Less is more in the bedroom, girlfriend, less is more. 😉
I suspect the magazine would not be left around for Philip and Jamie to see – it would be secreted away in Dotty or Amanda’s bedroom. No way you could leave that sort of thing around with pre-teen boys about!
I might as well carry on and make this comment completely frivolous – are we sure that’s a leather jacket Lee is wearing and not another one of those vinyl abominations. I’m going to pretend it’s leather.
Love Amanda’s office outfit – the red is a bit bright for sneaking and eavesdropping but overall the outfit is very flattering and stylish.
I’ll come back later in the day with some serious comments about what’s happening in this scene. I had to get that nightgown stuff off my chest first.

      1. ROFL! Kiwismh, my dad was in the lingerie manufacturing business, so perversely I never wore lingerie coz I couldn’t see what the big (ok skimpy) deal was about it all. But my friends all scored big time whenever they’d come to my folks house to visit. My sweet dad would just say to go look in the hallway closet and take whatever they wanted. (Miss that man. Sigh.)

      1. I have to speak in defense of the nightgown. I have one kind of like that and have had one ever since I was a young girl in the early 80’s. I sleep so comfortably in them. And I do think they are kind of pretty and feminine. Of course I also have other forms of nightwear…. but I really do like what I call my “April Cornell cotton” nightgown for a good nights sleep.

        1. I agree. She’s sleeping alone so she wants something comfy and if it can be a little feminine – great. She can pull out the sexy stuff when there is a reason. Of course I sleep in a t shirt and shorts so maybe I’m not the right person to ask LOL

          1. I like nightgowns myself. One thing I’ve never owned but wish I did would be one of those long, white nightgowns like you see in period movies. Like this one from Northanger Abbey:

Just the thing for wandering the dark, spooky hallways of an old mansion with only a flickering candle to light your way. (Jestress shivers a little. Her Halloween obsession is kicking in early this year. 🙂 )

so funny, I never guessed we’d end up debating Amanda’s nightie- we only saw it for barely a second or two- haaa.. I love the inpredictable nature of these discussions haa!!

Plus, we saw the nightie when Lee was lookin mighty fine with his unbuttoned shirt! so I am shocked you noticed the nightie! haaa!!! 🙂

      3. Yes, I was thinking of the nightgown Penelope gave her. I thought maybe that might have inspired her to be a bit more adventurous in her night attire options. I’m not suggesting a lace teddy and G-string but just think the voluminous high collared night-gown big enough for 3 Amanda’s and the neighbour’s cat is just a wee bit conservative.
Something a long the lines of the gown in Jestress’ link below would be perfect for Amanda – enough to cover up but flattering at the same time.
Maybe it was all tried up too with the censors and the time of night the show was on. After all, they also have Lee on occasion wearing pyjamas – sooooo out of character for that boy. But then if they filmed what he actually would wear to bed I’m sure the censors would’ve had a melt down… and so would we! 😉 wh-hoooooo!
Pass the chocolate please and let me dwell on that image for a while.

  8. Morley beat me to it. I think the ‘Marriage after 30 works best’ is perfect for Amanda too!! I agree that I’m glad they didn’t include the drunk driver scene. It’s not something that’s funny and it wouldn’t have been serious enough to be appropriate.

As far as the call and figuring that out… I’ve wondered about that too. I think Lee has figured out that Amanda is doing something with Harry so he makes the assumption that it’s Harry’s phone since Amanda clearly wasn’t calling Lee. I’m not sure why he didn’t then determine that Harry is Kolinski unless he thinks Harry set something up to track Kolinski and is for some reason using his number.

And can I just add…. that map is a recipe for getting lost. The kind of boonies she ends up in when she gets to Harry would be a fair drive (and many road changes) from downtown DC. No way that map gets her there.

    1. Ha haaa!!! when I found that magazine cover and included it I thought to myself – hmm which headline will everyone focus on the most?? and yup!! the marriage over 30 one was my guess!! 😉 tee heee..

I will just add though that I saw it as a KJ or BG addition to the set, not a Dotty or Amanda addition – as it’s never in focus when it can be seen.. it’s just a non descript magazine..
But- I LOVE all the ideas you guys have for how Amanda bought it or Dotty bought it to give Amanda hints haaaaaa I love it!!!
Really though, Cosmopolitan these days has umm.. increased the titilation wouldn’t you say?! I wanted to find the mag and see if there was a KJ or BB article in it! that would have been too funny!

Once you pointed out the magazine, I did notice the article in Cosmo entitled “The Case for Saying No to Casual Sex”….that article fits Amanda for sure.

  9. I don’t know what to think about the plot holes. I do think maybe Lee has put together that there must be a connection between Amanda and Harry for some reason, maybe his interception of Amanda’s call and her asking about Harry’s portrait and her following him and throwing the ball all connect someway. Maybe he doesn’t tell Billy because he knows Billy just called Amanda off of Agency business until things get sorted, but Lee knows that Amanda may be the key.to this whole thing…? Maybe?

But I do love the continuity with Amanda’s night gown. And I think it is interesting that two of the articles on the front of that magazine are so perfect for SMK. “The case for saying no to casual sex” and “Why marriage after 30 works best” Ha ha ha! Is Amanda reading them to sure up her resolve in the way she relates to someone specific in her life? 😉 That is certainly not the best magazine to have sitting around a house with 2 preteen boys. Maybe it is trying to show some continuity from Amanda and her mother in OTL???
