6/13 Season Three, Episode 02: We’re Off to See the Wizard- Scarecrow and Mrs King (Morley’s order: Episode 04)

The next day and Lee enters Billy’s office..
Lee: Billy, you got anything new on Pamela’s murder.
[Umm why doesn’t he ask about Cheryl’s murder too?!]
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000932699Billy: Yah, the Ballistics Report. It says the same gun that killed Pamela Densmore killed all the others.
Lee: And I think Serdeych pulled the trigger. 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_0009387053.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000939706Billy: Why?
Lee: Because the Wizard is closing in and Serdeych is doing
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000942709everything he can to destroy the Oz Network, which he tried to do 10 years ago!

[oh interesting.. at this stage, Lee is seeing things quite clearly.. in spite of the angst over all the women being murdered..or.. is he? I had forgotten about this!??]
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000947714Francine: How do you figure that?

[Hello.. I would have thought this is the obvious conclusion to draw!]
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000949716Lee: Because I think Serdeych was a member of the Oz Network.

[okay, I can’t pretend I don’t know who is behind these crimes! Interesting though to hear Lee sounding on 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000955722the money! maybe more than he realises..]
Francine: Lee, aren’t you forgetting that Paul Barnes cleared everyone on that operation?
[so what.. so no one has turned dirty before?!]
Lee: No! No I’m not.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000958625Uh oh.. maybe Lee is not thinking so clearly after all! Lee is looking mad here no?
With this, Lee the action man leaves Billy’s office..to do something!! without forgetting Paul cleared Serdeych!! 😉

[what does Lee mean? hmm I guess we shall see.. does he think they are in it together? or that Serdeych is the wizard at this point? Amanda has a wizard in her family.. does Lee know that? You know.. Uncle Iggy? 😉 ]
Billy and Francine share a look once Lee has 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000965732left.
Billy: Keep an eye on him.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000964731
Keep an eye on him? I guess we are being told here that Lee is heading into dangerous territory with this personal stake of his?

Interesting that Lee seems fixated on Pamela’s death.. as opposed to the others, and not even the most recent – I’ll put this down to Lee really being fixated on Dorothy- but he is displacing this onto Pamela so he doesn’t have to admit it to others

The camera cuts to Lee stylishly waiting for a computer to spit something out. Sure stylish! 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000969736Just look at that pose..
Didn’t he do that at the top of the stairs in The First Time??
Lee is Mr Intensity too… the music tells us this.. and the way Lee rips the paper out off the printer?- take that printer! that’s for making me wait two seconds.
Personally I say thanks printer- it gave us a moment to admire intense Lee Smile
Next thing, we see a funny light being pointed at someone.. how ridiculous!
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000981114
Ahh I see.. it’s Paul being grilled by Dr Pfaff and Billy..(I don’t think the light does the grilling, I think it tests if Paul is well done!) Is this the usual ‘annual’?! lol..
Paul: I don’t know what you want. I can’t get anymore specific!
Billy: You’ll have to try.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000990757Dr Pfaff: I don’t think pressure’s going to work here, Billy.  [good cop bad cop?!]
When you 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000996763promised to deliver Serdeych, maybe you were just a little too – eager. Even, unrealistic.

[What was it burn out Lee said? no one bats a thousand all the time.. Is Pfaff trying to be 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000999766provocative on purpose here? maybe..]

Paul: Have you ever been in the 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001002769field, Pfaff? Have you ever worked a string of agents day and night for a year?
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001003770
With a knot in your stomach the size of a grapefruit every time there was a phone call, 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001004771or a knock on the door. Huh? Because if you had, you’d know it takes time, and patience – something in short supply around here…
 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001017784
[Interesting.. maybe Paul is not wrong about that.. Still with 10 women killed and counting? Patience may not be possible any longer! I think Paul is completely disconnected from the death of these women.]
…And if that voice analyser is telling you that I’m a little stressed out, it’s right!…
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001021788
…Because every day I waste my time jawing with “soft hands” like you, I lose a day on 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001024791Serdeych.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001027794
And believe me, he doesn’t need much. I promised you an hour and gave you 70 minutes. You owe me 10.

3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001041808

Sheesh!! Paul storms out.. ouchie..
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001046813
Pfaff: He’s stretched tight…
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001049816
…Real tight.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001054821
[No kidding… derr Ragmop could have told us that! Next thing you know the doc will stand up and shout- Harry is Kolinsky!! 😉 ]

Right.. okay so we learn a little more about Paul here.. the burn out rumour about Paul seems to be close to the truth. Is he stretched tight enough to be dangerous?
Okaaaay, I find him less cold-hearted now.. and more obsessed with his work! No wonder he has tried to switch off his emotions – or maybe he hasn’t tried.. maybe it has happened as a result of all the stress he couldn’t deal with anymore so his emotions shut down?

I find him sad – he needs help.. Is Lee going to offer it?? Hmm.. we’ll see!
Paul has a lot at stake here.. his legacy even.. and it seems Paul has chosen to be the lone wolf in bringing down Serdeych. He seems to have given up trying to recruit help.. then again maybe he doesn’t see anyone who can help him if everyone is challenging and questioning him!

3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001057824On to Amanda – she’s on the computer.. Look out!!
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001059826
Amanda is trying to access the oz network file-love how the file code finishes with ‘BB’ !!
[LOL you’d think with everything going on at the moment she would have been immediately held at
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001063830gunpoint for accessing that file! 😉 ]
whooo hoooo sneaky Amanda uses Francine’s clearance!!

3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001067834TOP SECRET flashes on the screen with an alarm.. oh dear.. the ERA button again dear? 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001068168Winking smile The supervisor there looks around wondering who is accessing something top secret.. 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001072839and Amanda panics.. lol she looks so guilty! Is it just me or does she look around like it is someone else’s computer making that noise? oh well.. the guy doesn’t seem to notice her!
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001075842Computer (which sounds like a dalek!):  Verify, or Security will respond.
(Exterminate!!)
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001082849
Uh oh.. the computer is counting down. hurry Amanda!! A quick swipe of the magic green clearance card.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001083016..Clearance, Oz file, Begin.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001086853Phew.. just as the supervisor arrives ‘clearance: Francine Desmond’ disappears from the screen! whoa!! Go Amanda!!Hutchinson: Everything copacetic Mrs King?
[I had to look up Copacetic.. I’d never heard of it!]
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001089856Amanda gives Hutchinson lots of smiles!!
Amanda: Oh yes, Mr Hutchinson. Just super.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001090623

We cut to Paul heading for the elevator.. Uh oh.. Lee has found him.. and seems to be mad! This is very unfortunate timing! Lee is upset.. and Paul is all worn out- from chasing Serdeych, and defending himself with Billy and Dr Pfaff!
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001102469Lee: I want to talk, Paul. (you can just make out Lee in the foreground here as Paul walks past him- Lee is looking down at the papers not at Paul when he says this)
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001105405Paul tries to give him the brush off.. :  Later Scarecrow, I’ve had about all the talking I can do for today.
[Maybe Lee wouldn’t be so mad, if Paul had made an effort to talk to Lee about the case- he seems to keep brushing Lee off.. which has only made it worse. If the two of them did talk, and calm down they would maybe be able to figure things out!]
Lee: Now!!!!
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001107874(Paul turns to look at Lee surprised by the venomous tone)
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001108875…Now I ran location check on those murders over the past six months. Cross-referenced it with your travel itinerary…
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001117884
…There’s a perfect correlation here. You seem to be in the right place at the right time – every time.

3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001119953[Uh oh.. but Lee.. every first year psych student learns: correlation does not equal causation! There is a third variable at play here that Lee seems to have written off: Serdeych!]
Paul: Meaning?
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001122889Lee: Meaning that’s a big coincidence, Paul. Now what the hell is going on here?
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001126893[Would Paul be that blatant or that stupid? I don’t find the guy warm.. but nor do I find him stupid!! Lee is all emotion now..]
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001127894Paul: I’ll tell you what’s going on Scarecrow. I’ve been fighting for my life ever since I got to this place with a 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001133900bunch of flabby suits who wouldn’t mind shutting down the most effective network this Agency’s ever known! And I don’t need guys who ought to know better taking cheap shots at their own.
(here we see Amanda arrive in the background.. taking this all in.. btw- I hate this outfit on Amanda!!!!)
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001139906[Paul’s ego seems to be at stake here too.. uh oh!.. this whole exchange is an unfortunate crossing of paths.. wrong place.. wrong time!]
Lee:
You call that correlation a cheap shot!
[LOL.. I would! ]
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_0011409073.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001141908
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001143910Paul: You want to talk about a correlation? 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001144911Those women who were murdered were YOUR women! Explain that!
(Paul whacks the sheets out of Lee’s hands.. Does Paul think Pamela was one of ‘Lee’s women’?!) 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001147514
whoaa.. Paul is a fighter!! provoking Lee here- Paul is really on the edge.. but also- I think he’s pretty tough and feels he can take Lee!
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001147647
As they get ready to fight, you can see Amanda in the background… urging Billy to come towards her and- do something!!
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001148448
[whoa!!!!! ‘your’ women!! ouch!!! Paul’s right though- the correlation between Lee and the women is perfect – but Lee didn’t do it!!]
Lee: whyy you!!!!
Paul: come on!! come on!!

3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001148848[he’ll take ya! ha!! like two school boys!!]
Billy:  Hold it! Hold it! Back off!
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001149649We see a close up of Lee.. He’s mad.. furious!
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001150917
We see a close up of Paul. He’s hurt and fed up.. 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001152052
He doesn’t seem mad with Lee, not to me.. This is very unfortunate.. the men could have been a great team to deal with this – but seems Serdeych’s plan is so far working perfectly- oh dear.. I am no longer thinking like I don’t know who is killing the women. very naughty of me! umm..
Billy to Lee: …What is going on?
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001153853
[Phew! thank goodness Billy was around.. Where was Francine? I thought she was to ‘keep an eye on him’! ]
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001156923Lee: Nothing!!!! (Lee stops yelling and gets control of himself.)
…Just a little misunderstanding, that’s all.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001158925[okay everyone.. why doesn’t Lee tell Billy about the perfect correlation?? why does he cover it up?]

Billy: We can’t afford any “little misunderstandings” around here Scarecrow. 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001164931You take the rest of the day off and clear your head! That’s an order. [well technically the scarecrow had a very clear head.. after all he was brainless Winking smile poor Lee.. I’d be mad 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001167934at Paul if he gave me a codename brainless too Winking smile ahem..]

When Billy leaves, Amanda approaches Lee..
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001170904
Amanda: Lee…
Lee: What are you doing here? [lol!!! what a nonsensical question!! He’s pretty upset! All in his limbic system!! Clear thoughts? gone!]

Amanda:
Well, I was just doing some routi-

3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001173306
Lee:
Are you free right now?
Amanda: Yes.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001175842Lee (quietly):
I need to talk.
Amanda: Okay.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_001177711
Amanda quietly takes it all in.. wow.. monumental huh.. Lee telling Amanda he needs to talk? wow!!!

Lee takes Amanda by the elbow and leads her to the elevator.
Hmm maybe we’ll find out why Lee didn’t tell Billy next up.. but for now.. I’ll need to finish here!! As always, I’d love to hear your thinking! byee for now!!!

  1. I just wanted to say how much I appreciate that they made this ep so emotional. Given the 1980s shows history, I could have totally seen them forgetting about Lee saying on Magic Bus that the story behind his code name is too personal and doing something silly, like “It was a joke because I was always rushing in and Billy said I lacked brains” or something like that. Instead they really gave us a payoff so it totally justified his earlier scene comments.

I LOVE THIS SHOW! Even when they don’t intend to foreshadow they still do an amazing job!

  2. Huh, Leslie was suppose to be in this episode. Glad we didn’t have to see that. Doesn’t make any sense, though, if this were after OTL since Lee blew her off to be with Amanda at the end of OTL. I can’t see them still dating after that, maybe this episode was first, and it was cut to make Leslie more of a surprise in OTL. Would make sense that she be written in before that as OTL makes it seem like they had a relationship for a little while.

    1. I don’t have a problem with Leslie in this episode even with this one being after OTL. I know we all have different opinions (viva la difference!), but I don’t think he blew Leslie off at the end of OTL. I explain my ideas in my stories, but… uh, you will have to wait for that 😉

      1. Yeah, I am not reading this episode as being after OTL anymore because I think he did kind of blow Leslie off, also because of a couple other reasons I stated later in this episode. I would like to know what your ideas are, though, I’ve found myself persuaded to change my mind more than once on this blog. Part of the reason I like it I’ve found myself on different blogs where people including me just seem to be there to argue to the death what they think. I like the fact that here people seem open to other people’s opinions and that people express their opinions in a way that’s not judgemental and argumentative making people more open to see they are coming from. I’ve gotten hung up a couple times though on little things that make it hard for me to see this episode as coming after OTL. Now going through it, I just don’t think I really buy that it does.

        1. Well, Iwsod will love it that you share her opinion.:)
I usually put all of my thoughts here on the blog, but if I recall correctly I chose not to go int great detail here. I think I put some of it at Neds. But I guess my thoughts on this really start at the beginning of season three and I developed them more in my stories. But I probably won’t publish those for a while yet. There is a beautiful slow development to Lee during these first few episodes and I like the way it I see it develop in the order that Iwsod had decided to blog them in (which is my order, or the one I like the best). The rose thing doesn’t irk me a bit and I can overlook the rose in OTL because I never see Lee really take a huge whiff of it. I stumble more over Lee not just dating Leslie, but denying it after he was so open with Amanda. I see what you are saying about a possible knee jerk reaction to the murders and the closeness he is becoming aware of with Amanda, but it wasn’t enough of a reason for me to change the way I saw it all transpiring.
All the different options and opinions just give us more to talk about… 😀

  3. Lee is looking particularly good in his suit here – teal blue suits him. 🙂

I’m just going to ignore most of the plot stuff in this episode because I think it’s all just too vague, hard to follow, and I feel like we’ve all been transported to Oz where weird things happen. I’ll just go with it and focus on swoony Lee, his growth and his relationship with Amanda. That’s pretty much why we’re all here, right?

Oh,gosh! I completely forgot about Uncle Iggy!!! Too funny, iwsod!!!

I like Paul here in these scenes. And I finally see Harvey in Paul – the lips, the eyes, the mannerisms. Yep, it’s Harvey alright! He must have his mother’s nose though. 😉

“I promised you an hour and gave you 70 minutes. You owe me 10.” What authority! Love that exit line. The only way to make it better was to have Lee be in the situation and say that. Hot damn! Lee may be Billy’s top agent, but I’ve always thought that Paul was someone’s top agent too. Not sure where though and who his boss was. Was he based in Europe? He has on a guest pass, so he has to work elsewhere. I like Paul, I think I’ve never not liked him.

“The ERA button again dear?” Well, it sure wasn’t clams! LOL! 😉 Love those nuggets – especially when I find them!

Love this intense argument here with Lee and Paul. I don’t think Lee is making a cheap shot, but I do think he comes across as making it more than a coincidence in his mind which is another reason Paul is ticked at him. Paul is busting his butt trying to figure this out and Lee is working against him, not with him. Of course, Paul could have asked for Lee’s help…sound like anyone we know? Guess Paul doesn’t have a partner either. A lone wolf wizard?

Love how Paul delivers his “…the most effective network this Agency’s ever known!” Good job, Mr. Macht!

Those women were YOUR women? Oh my, sounds like these two may be in competition in another way outside of work. So perhaps Lee had Pamela and yet she sent Paul packing…hmmm. Maybe he’s just not tall enough.

Lee doesn’t tell Billy anything, because he knows it’s always better to come to the boss after you’ve figured things out and have a plan to deal with it. He knows that when you go to the boss with unanswered questions and no plan, the boss thinks you can’t do your job, you want the boss to help, and then the boss loses confidence in you and then wonder if he needs to step in and tell you how to do your job or worse – do it for you! Not that I’m speaking from personal experience or anything. 😉

Good call on Amanda’s outfit, iwsod. It does nothing for her.

  6. I find it interesting that Lee and Paul both like to put their hands in their pockets when it’s all intense. Those two men are so connected and don’t even realize it.

A couple of scenes ago Paul was really in lone wolf mode by stating that those were “my agents, my network, my family, my problem”. Lee refers to them as “my friends” and Paul cryptically notes “weren’t they all?”

Now Paul has his dander up and his back up against a wall and states that the women were Lee’s women. They are both so suspicious of and blaming each other. Both are having trouble dealing with the situation and too blinded by the fact that they alone have to solve this. It seems like something had to have happened between these two years ago to create such quick animosity towards each other. They seem alike in many ways, but world’s apart in others. In this instance whatever adversity they went through, possibly Dorothy’s death, instead of bringing them together seemed to drive them apart.

Okay, I’m glad were are on summer vacation, because I would again be hard-pressed to avoid this blog during study halls and then I would have to explain all my reactions to swoony Lee. Love the pose at the printer, and I do like his hands as well and that’s a pretty good shot of the right one. And then there’s the matching tie and handkerchief set. We got my father so many of those for Father’s Day.

Wow, telling Amanda that he needs to talk. In my mind the rest of what he said was, “and you’re the only one I can talk to.”

    1. Hi Valerie!
I love your thoughts on Lee and Paul! the further we get into this episode the more interesting I find their relationship 🙂

Ohhhh I so want to publish the next one now! but.. I guess I must be strong and not rush you guys! 🙂

Glad you enjoyed Lee’s printer pose Valerie 🙂

    2. Yes, Valerie, I like the way you complete Lee’s thoughts here. I do believe that is true for him. You know he has already gone to her once. I wonder what conversation they would have had outside her house the night before if Dotty hadn’t interrupted. He doesn’t just turn to her here because she is standing there in the hall. I do think he would have sought her out if she hadn’t been there.

      1. And this is so much progress for Lee. Amanda has always tried to draw him out and get him to talk. He has either downright refused or given her that ‘need to know’ line. He is at a bubbling over or breaking point and he needs to get this all out and talk this all through and what’s great is that he knows he needs to do it. What is also great is that he knows Amanda will listen, not judge, offer advice, and ultimately help him through it all.

    3. Like this, Valerie. I wonder if Lee became too good of an agent to be part of the Oz network and so he left that position and came back to work for Billy (assuming Billy was the boss at the time). Almost like Lee was on interagency loan or something to Paul. Paul wears a guest pass here, so he’s not an Agency employee. He’s an agent, so it’s not for the same reason Amanda wears one. It’s all a bit weird, but I think if this were the case, it could help explain some of the animosity between the two. Lee came back to work for Billy because he had become as good as or possibly better than Paul.

      1. I wonder if, after Dorothy’s death, Lee and Paul had some argument over the whole Serdeych thing, which caused them to part. Perhaps, Paul became Mr. I-Have-To-Solve-This-If-It-Takes-Forever and became hardened. Lee was still dealing with her death in this “fire-fight” right in front of him. He then dealt with it by becoming a top agent, doing things his way. He was angry at Paul because of the way Paul did things – losing Dorothy in this fight. So, Lee becomes “the best” in order to prove he was better than Paul. (Unfortunately, he lost his partner. However, it’s implied that his partner died for him. Not the same situation as Dorothy.) His anger at Paul here is a reflection of his prior anger. He’s grown a bit during this time with Amanda, though, so he begins to process this anger differently.

Will this process be better for him? We’ll know by the end of the episode.

        1. Interesting, debilyn. I’d really like to know just who Paul worked for and what he’s been doing for the past ten years. Surely he’s not been trying to solve this while Serdeych think in all that time?

          Like

          1. I think Paul worked/works in conjunction with the Agency on whatever assignments they gave/give the Oz network. I get the feeling the Oz network is like a subsidiary of the Agency. (Lee “was chosen” for this special assignment, he didn’t “apply.”)

I think searching for Serdeych has become Paul’s “hobby.” Time outside assignments has been spent on it for the rest of his career. I also get the impression that, perhaps due to his years as an agent – he’s reaching an age when he would either retire or move to some administrative position – he’s become more obsessed with finding him to “complete the incomplete” and put this ‘black mark” away once and for all.

            Like

  7. Lee definitely is not thinking straight, he cannot remain objective. I am glad that Billy notices this.
I like the way you mentioned “lone wolf” when referring to Paul. Again, it makes me wonder if Lee would be like this as an older agent if he hadn’t learned to be in healthy relationship. I don’t dislike Paul. I think he is in a precarious place and is losing his ability to be objective as well. But I do not think it is because of guilt of fear, like Lee.
I do love that scene outside the elevator. The intensity of the two men is so powerful. It is scary to see two men like that lose it. And here is Amanda watching the whole thing. And then Lee reaches out to her. At first it sounds like he is angry with her again, and then he tells her he needs to talk. I think Amanda is a bit stunned and a little taken aback. I wonder if she thinks about that moment in Ned’s in BO? Maybe not, but that pops into my mind. The intensity of the moment and her being there. But this time he asks for help. And he asks if she is free as well, he doesn’t just assume. Lee at a breaking point is reaching out. Yes, Wow!!!

  8. So remember back to the damn duck episode where Lee says that the reason that he and Amanda don’t get along is that she is a rule follower and he is a rule breaker and the two just don’t mix? Well here is Amanda breaking the agency rules big time. Ah–she has come a long way. Now she wouldn’t just break the rules to be bad, but she does to find out more about what is going on so that she can help Lee…….

      1. Well, she’s worked for the government now for two years…and spied on Lee in this here order…. 😉

I think Lee is rubbing off on her like she is rubbing off on him. And I do think she’d only break the rules in what she would define as extreme conditions.

  9. I like the intensity of the two scenes with Paul here. He’s under stress and frustrated with what he sees as time-wasting exercises (his session with Pfaff proves that) but he doesn’t appear to have lost his focus and ability to analyse the scenario.
Lee is also stressed but he seems to be struggling to maintain his objectivity and seems to have closed himself off to any scenarios other than the one he is forming in his head, which at this stage seems to be that someone inside the Oz network is responsible for the murders and that someone is Paul. He isn’t even bothering to keep his mind open to other possibilities. Not that the correlation of Paul being in the same places at the same time as all the murders isn’t a good line of enquiry but it shouldn’t be the only possibility Lee is considering.
These women who he has known being killed really seems to be getting to him, and along with the reminder of Dorothy’s death, Lee is now really off-kilter. I think maybe he would have stayed more focussed and objective two years ago, or even a year ago. His increasing maturity and awareness of the unhealthy way he used to conduct his relationships with women is a good thing, but right now that awareness has suddenly been magnified a thousand-fold and it is disrupting his ability to investigate this case in professional manner. Part of this I suppose is his feelings of guilt and responsibility that somehow their association with him is why these women are being murdered. Does he feel guilt over Dorothy’s death too – that it should have been him, not her that got killed? Or is his intensity around memories of Dorothy just that he once again lost someone he was starting to care about and the grief of that compelled him to keep his subsequent “relationships” emotionally shallow.
There is no loss (hurt) if you don’t love but ironically here Lee is feeling the loss of these women, even if it is a feeling of loss born out of guilt that he might be the common denominator in these women being targeted.
(I guess he felt a sense of loss for Eva but of course got over that darn quick when she tried to shoot him in the back. Before he met Amanda, Eva seems to have been the only woman since Dorothy he had allowed himself to begin to have feelings for.)
Huge growth here there in that he recognises that he needs to talk about it and it is Amanda he naturally turns too. Yay! 😀

Agree!! huge growth!! and.. double Yay!! 🙂

    2. I like what you wrote here. Especially your thoughts on how Lee would have reacted differently even two years before. So I guess the question is, does Lee’s increased emotional awareness help or hinder his effectiveness. Can he be a good agent if he is in touch with emotions and caring about people, or does an good agent need to remain removed and aloof, like Paul?

I had a thought about Eva. I wonder if Lee felt loss due to the fact that she tried to shoot him in the back? Do you know what I mean? It would be one thing to love someone and then have them choose another, but to find out that they were using you because of your job and were supposed to kill you, that is another form of loss.

Yes, that’s what I was wondering when I wrote my comments. I think increased emotional awareness will eventually make Lee much more effective but I think right now he is still learning and getting used to it so he’s a bit out of control at the moment. Like a kid learning to ride a bike without trainer wheels – maybe Amanda is his trainer wheels. 😉
You’re probably right about Eva too – maybe he only thought he loved her. The feeling of loss might be more associated with the betrayal.

        1. Hey kiwismh sorry I didn’t get back to your comment..these are all great ideas.. I’m keeping this in mind as we learn more about what’s happening.

I love these big questions.. and look forward to pondering with you guys… I can’t really add to this yet..will come back to this! Please bring this up again later in the episode if it doesn’t come up please! 🙂

      2. That’s a good question, Morley, and I think that his increased emotional awareness does help him to become a better agent; but wasn’t in SAAB he told her not to get emotionally attached and in ROTP Amanda says Lee is always telling me not to get emotionally attached. Both of them were in Season 1 look how far he’s come!!!!

        1. I agree, Melissa. I think that Lee’s increased emotional awareness makes him a better agent, but I also think it may make it harder to be an agent for the reasons you said in SAAB and ROTP. It’s harder because you do get attached and lose objectivity. But we’ll be coming back to this in about an SMK year or so.

  10. BB sure packs a lot into the way he delivers his lines at the end of this scene. I can’t get over the half-choked way he says, “I need to talk”. Huge step here for Lee, no?

  11. Btw Iwsod, I don’t like Amanda’s outfit either. Why ruin a perfectly okay (‘okay’ is all I’m giving it) skirt and blouse with a huge shirt? KJ has a teeny tiny figure and is genetically gifted, why put her in a potato sack? Oh the 80s styles….
Back to business, love love love intense Lee! That’s all I had to say. 😀

          1. Yep! but I try to forget that fact. We only get to see a head shot in the intro.. so not too bad 🙂 Yeah I think the flowers and patterns look more dated.

Man we need to do some fashion posts sometime eh?!

Should I add this to the list for when the walk is done?

            1. Yep, add it to the list!!! It would be funny to read an “Amanda King (Lack of) Fashion” post as authored by Francine. Only to be followed by a “What Not to Wear When Scrubbing Your Toilet – the Francine Desmond Fashion File”, as authored by Amanda. It makes me laugh just thinking about it!!

Yep, been bitten more times than I care to remember (tetanus shots rule!) One of my adolescent girls used to flip out and rip her clothes off and run. I mean, she was fast and it was a race to see who got to the outside doors first. Oy!

It’s quite a challenge isn’t it, special or general ed, but has amazing rewards (LOL, and I’ve got the scars to prove it!). It helps to have places to decompress though doesn’t it? So yeah(!) for SMKland and the good folks who make this blog so amazing 🙂

                  1. Okay, jule. I have a clearer picture now. Although some of the kids that are starting school now have some awful manners and this weird sense of entitlement. They have been allowed to get away with murder at home and can do what they want when they want it. I cringe about what they will be like when they get to my classroom if it isn’t reigned in. I always said it would be time to head off into the sunset if it ever got to a point where I could not control my own classroom. Fortunately I haven’t reached that point yet.
