Anyone else a bit miffed we didn’t get to see Lee’s reaction to hearing about this?? or when he first saw her after? Hmm.. maybe the writers are avoiding focusing on this aspect for now..?]
(Amanda holds out a glass for Billy- the boss, the very hands on and supportive boss- to pour her a glass of water)
…I’m sorry I’m so shaky. I know it isn’t very professional. 
[wow!!! How about this for a demonstration of how far Amanda has come – she is concerned about looking professional!!! Ms I don’t know how I could tell the kids their fish died in the car??!!! (Spot Quiz! what ep was that?) Progress!!! Not only does Amanda care about being professional – IMHO she IS very professional here all things considered!!

Lee: Hey, it’s okay Amanda. Only amateurs don’t shake…
[whooo hooo!!! Seems Lee just said in front of everyone that Amanda is no longer an amateur!!]
…The good news is he probably wasn’t trying to kill you. It was too close to miss…
[Well Thank goodness for that- because it did look really lame.. but then baddies try and kill people in smk all the time and look that lame: and they are trying to kill them! lol!]

(Lee whacks Billy on the arm here, like he has already run his idea by Billy)

[Oh dear.. I sense a bit of confirmation bias coming our way! I suspect Lee has decided what the story is here, and is interpreting events to match what he has already decided.. uh oh.. Lee’s really not thinking clearly!
So why did the baddie made this faux attempt on Amanda’s life? rather than kill her?? what do you all think? Does he hate wagoneers/cruisers or whatever with the wood panels?? ]
Francine: We can’t get a ballistics match on the bullets, we don’t have any fingerprints. What fits? [Ummm Amanda is a woman, who has worked with Lee.. and someone shot at her- reason enough?!]
Lee: The attacks are getting closer and closer to me… [whooooo so Lee is saying Amanda is closer to him than all these other women?? Okay, even if this is just referring to her being his work partner, or friend- I like!!!] …. It’s like a spiral, don’t you see that?..
…He didn’t even know who Amanda was before he got here. Now she’s the target.
[Uh oh.. I hear a tinge of ‘if you don’t see what I see then there must be something wrong with you’ in Lee’s tone here! No she doesn’t see. There is more than one way to look at all this!]
Amanda looks concerned at hearing that she is now the target from Lee no? man.. I cannot wait for her to be out of that awful outfit!!!
Billy: Hold it, hold it. No accusations unless you can back them up. [Ahh Billy.. a voice of reason- but.. will anyone listen to Billy? but who does Billy think Lee is accusing? I’m guessing Paul? ]
Lee: How about that red mask?
[There goes Lee with that pose again! ]
Francine: Assassins often wear masks.
[And assassins usually shoot at their victims to kill them.. soo what’s your point?!]
Amanda: Uh, excuse me, this was red hockey 
mask just like the ones the men wore who killed Dorothy.
[okay, so it’s connected to the Dorothy killing.. still doesn’t mean it has to be Paul..]
Billy: You’re seeing Dorothy and maybe now 
you’re both hallucinating!
[Ahh I was wondering if Lee had told Billy about pop up Dorothy! but Billy.. oh dear – just like in Mr Brand and OTL, Billy tries to dismiss what Amanda saw!! he’s gotta stop doing that ]
Lee: Paul Barnes was in every city on the day of every murder. Now I would call that a 100% correlation, not a hallucination.
[oh dear.. Nothing anyone says at this point is going to sway Lee- he has already made up his mind- to his own peril!
Rofl I find this line of Lee’s hilarious.. because the correlation isn’t a ‘hallucination’ it’s an illusory correlation!! 
same diff!!]
Francine: Okay. So what about a motive?
Lee: He snapped – how about that?
[lol with an argument like that anyone could have had a motive! Seems to me there is no way for anyone to disprove Lee’s theory..oh boy!
Is it my imagination or does Billy look like he isn’t buying it?]
… Barnes is a perfectionist [He’s now called Barnes.. lol!] , or at least he was. Look, how many of his recent missions have gone south? 5, 6? No, he’s losing it, he’s scared. He’s – he’s getting revenge on somebody he fears and 
envies.
[ What do you make of Francine’s look here?? do you think she is buying it??] …That’s me.
Seems Lee’s chat with Dr Pfaff was most unhelpful How does that explain betraying Dorothy years ago?? or does Lee see that as separate? me confused.. Also, there is an implicit assumption in all this from Lee- that Paul has something about Lee which he would envy lol!! he fears me! he envies me! I think Billy’s look 
when Lee finishes here says – boy are you talking nonsense!!! What do you make of it?
Billy seems to put a stop to Lee’s err clutching at straws here as he approaches Amanda and changes the subject.
Billy: How about you Amanda? You calm enough to go home? We have a team on the house. [ahhh finally.. Amanda gets some protection!]
Amanda: Sir, if you don’t mind my saying so, a blown out windshield is not an hallucination.
Billy: I know, I’m just glad that you’re all-right. [awh!!! That is a bit of a milestone for Billy isn’t it?? He cares, but he isn’t usually so openly caring – Billy is starting to sound like Lee – Lee said the same thing in Car Wars oh hey, is this an admission that sometimes he says things like that because he is playing devil’s advocate? He doesn’t really question what Amanda saw?]
Lee (impatiently): Well when are we going to 
pick him up, huh? Run him through the wringer?
[Is it just me or does the background behind Lee and where he is looking here not really match?]
Billy: We’re talking about Paul Barnes. We need more than that!
[Good for you Billy.. he is not so quick to believe the worst of an experienced and very successful agent.]
Lee: Well, do you mind if I get more than that.
Billy: Yes, I mind!…
…You don’t exactly appear to be humming with mental health.
[Good Call Billy!!!!]
…You’re seeing people remember?
[oh if only Billy had said you’re seeing dead people! tee hee]
…You need rest…
[I love how here Lee looks a tiny bit chastened…and looks at Amanda – she offers him a quiet 
smile in support]
…Take Amanda home and then get some sleep. That’s an order!
[oh dear.. I could have some fun with that dialogue.. but ahem.. I won’t.]
Man… Did Billy really think Lee would listen to him?? umm.. is Francine still ‘keeping an eye on him’?!
Lee (quietly): C’mon.
Lee holds his hand out to Amanda for her to give him her hand and they walk out.
– Hmm!!! Lee doesn’t seem to mind touching Amanda now
Lee gives Amanda a bittersweet pensive smile..
The scene ends here..
Next up we are back at Amanda’s where Amanda 
is listening to her Russian tapes.. LOL we see a close up on the player, but the play button isn’t down.. and it doesn’t even look like it is in Amanda’s family room [okay play button is down in the wideshot! ]
A bit dotty Dotty is behind her pouring hot chocolate. Is this the first time we’ve seen this crazy sweater??!! I don’t remember..
– lol! What does Dotty make of this tape?!
Tape: Bullets ricochet around you, their hot breath on your face. You’ve been there before. [So poetic for a Russian language tape..and for an agency training tape! lol! and he no longer sounds like Greedo!]
…You respond instinctively with the right phrase – “Krasnyye Kitayskiy vzyali Vladivostok” [Ohh that’s right.. that’s ‘the Red Chinese have taken Vladivostok’ – Kudos and thanks again kiwismh!! you’ve done an amazing job transcribing the dialogue!!]
…Do you remember it?… (LOL we see Amanda shake her head silently )
…If not, refer to tape number 3 before you go to Moscow.
[Love the reference to going to Moscow – I like how this fits with OTL..] the tape finishes and Dotty walks over to Amanda..
Dotty: What’s that abo – sorry.
Amanda: Oh, it’s okay, mother.
[I’m liking this blue shirt on Amanda!!! Especially because it looks like it could be one of Lee’s hooo haaaa.. and so glad that nursing tunic thingy is gone!!]
Dotty: What’s that about Moscow?
Amanda: Mother, you know what? I’m going 
to have to get little bells put on your slippers so you can’t pad up behind me. (Dotty hands Amanda a cup of hot 
chocolate)
…Thank you.
[All spies whose family don’t know what they are doing should be issued those slippers with bells as par for the course!]
Dotty: You know, I want to tell you something. I think it is a wonderful idea that you are learning Russian….

Dotty heads up to bed, and Amanda is left alone with her hot chocolate.. her eyes are drawn to a book on the shelf.. [cue the weird chimes!!!]
Amanda takes the book off the shelf, sits down and enthusiastically begins turning the pages to the start of the story..
Looks like there is an inscription in the book. drat.. a shame I can’t make it out! Anyone??
Oh well.

Entering this discussion years too late, I don’t see any mention of my favorite part of the Russian tape scene. The tape says: ‘Bullets ricochet around you, their hot breath on your face. You’ve been there before.’ At the phrase ‘you’ve been there before’, KJ makes a small gesture with her face/head that to me says Amanda is thinking, yes, I’ve definitely been there before. Does anyone else see that or am I making it up? Love the comments here.

Yes, I just went back and watched it, so glad you pointed this out, Lynn K. It’s like a sheepish concurring acknowledgment that indeed she has been there before as she swallows her coffee. Kudos once again to KJ’s superbly subtle acting ability.

Thanks for your reply! Nice to have that affirmed. This time watching I’m appreciating the comedy side of the show more than before. I’ve always been so focused on the relationship between Lee and Amanda that I don’t remember finding the show as funny as I do now.

I agree with you about the comedy. I always remembered the romance and action, but on this rewatch, I’m enjoying the comedy so much!

Yes, I agree, this case is turning into a head game. Maybe that is part of what the title is about and a reference to the movie The Wizard of Oz. Didn’t Dorothy get knocked out and have a dream where everyone in her everyday life became a part of OZ?
Who is it that is saving up a comparison analysis of the book and movie, is that Valerie? Is hat part of what you are seeing?
I do think this near miss of Amanda was a calculated thing to get to Lee.

In the movie it’s a dream, but not in the book. Although Lee is having dreamlike flashbacks. I’m thinking this ep is probably more like the movie. At the end of the movie everyone sort of humors Dorothy about what she says happened to her and don’t really believe her. At this point Billy and Francine aren’t really believing Lee about his theory especially since he’s seeing Dorothy. They aren’t humoring him however. Billy almost tells Lee that he’s off his rocker. It certainly has been a trip down the yellow brick road.

I get the feeling Lee is a lot more intense and tunnel-visioned with this case because he has so much to lose – Amanda.
Yes, he’s sickened by the death of women he had worked with and/or dated, he’s ashamed at himself as his past active dating history is thrown into the spotlight, he’s shocked that all the evidence (in his mind) is pointing to one of his mentors and idols – Paul – so he has concentrated all his fear and anger on Paul.
But what seems to have affected him most is how this case has brought back to life the grief and emotion of losing Dorothy (whether they were a couple or not when she died, she was clearly special to him), and his deepest fear now is that ghastly memory being re-lived now with Amanda.
No wonder he has lost perspective. He just wants the assassin stopped and stopped right now before he loses Amanda just like he lost Dorothy.

Totally frivolous stuff from me tonight.
1. I loved that zoned-out look on Francine’s face as Lee rants about Paul getting revenge on someone he fears and envies. Francine has definitely gone off to her happy place here – no doubt dreaming of chocolate and handsome, rich men. Or maybe she’s seen herself in the mirror and has been hypnotised by her hideous brooch/blouse combo.
2. Funny Iwsod – Lee (Scarecrow) clutching at straws. ROFL. 😀
3. Amanda in Lee’s blue shirt! KC I’m willing to imagine the buttons are on the guy’s side so someone can do a fanfic about how Amanda came to be in possession of (and wearing) one of Lee’s shirts. Wait a minute! Isn’t this soon after Billy told Lee to take Amanda home and get some sleep?! Whooo-haaaa! 😉 kiwismh swan dives into the AU gutter.
4. Someday I must do an inventory of the knitted sweaters of SMK. Dotty needs to be apprehended by the Fashion Police for this heinous infringement. 😯
5. What, if any, significance is there to Amanda hugging the pillow as she listens to the Russian language tape. Seems a strange thing to do. Maybe she’s in need of a hug. Epic fail SMK writers – this was a major missed opportunity for Lee, damn it! Or… maybe they hugged off screen when Lee dropped her home. Fanfic writers, there is definitely a filler fanfic that must be written.
6. KJ’s real fingernails are much nicer than those bogus talons we often see in close up shots.
Maybe after I get some sleep I might be able to come up with more profound comment on this post. ‘Night all.

I love Dotty’s “a bit dotty” sweater. At least she has the courage to admit it. 😉
I think they must have made that specially for the show. I do some knitting myself, and a design that intricate takes skill. It would also probably take weeks of labor if done by hand, unless someone got hold of a knitting machine for it.

I know. I’ve been a serious knitter for almost 30 years. And I did the intarsia knitting like this back in the 80’s – mostly roses and geometrics, not the random abstract that Dotty is wearing. I figure Aunt Lillian is responsible for this one so Dotty feels she has to wear it from time to time. Leaving the colour design aside, the silhouette of this garment is not particularly flattering on Dotty. I can’t believe she would have knitted it for herself.

I read the book this last year with the kids and I didn’t think this ep had much to do with the story other than the code names. My husband didn’t understand the Oz references, I’m not sure that it really has much to do with the book. Plus the book is quite different than the movie. We just finished the book ‘The Tin Woodman of Oz” (nope no insight into this ep from the book).

Oh yeah, wasn’t it in Magic Bus that she talks about the goldfish dying in the car, when the bad guy asks what that woman wants gesturing outside the window and Lee says that is the million dollar question.

I’ve read the book (ok the audiobook) recently and I agree that I can’t find too much more. The quotes that have come up – all is not well in Oz etc, aren’t in the book. I have the dvd out from the library so I’m going give it a whirl this afternoon and see if I can spot anything

I’ve read the book and also own the movie. There were a couple of things that I noticed that I was going to wait until the end to reference. I think this ep may be more related to the movie. Even the title is more related to the movie.

Lee is off here, I think. Billy and Francine are noticing it. The question I have is what position is Amanda taking. I can’t tell if she is wondering about Lee’s eagerness to blame it on Paul, or if she has totally taken his view of the situation. I guess I end up thinking she is walking in the middle. She can no longer be objective about it, that is for sure, because now she, too, has been affected. That does have to be unnerving for her.
I have to agree with Jule. That hand held out to her by Lee is very noteworthy. I agree she was placed in Lee’s care and everyone knows that they don’t have a typical work relationship. But there is something about that gesture that suggest that their growing intimacy with one another is breaking through even their public work persona. It also speaks to the closeness that they are sharing in this experience. They are identifying with each other, they are becoming two parts of a whole in some way here.
I love Dotty’s sweater, who else could wear that?

Love your comments Morley. The hand holding comes so naturally to them, and so naturally that even others (Francine and Billy) don’t see it as unusual for these two people.
I’m trying to remember the first episode in which they walked hand in hand. I can remember it happening in the European episodes of S2.

I don’t tend to put huge meaning on the hold hold here – but I agree it was a sweet wonderful moment – right when we needed one!!!
They run together holding hands in There Goes the Neighbourhood.. but so far they don’t tend to ‘hold hands’ as they walk per se..
Not that I was thinking they held hands beyond Lee reaching out to her- we don’t see that. Maybe I’d make more of it if we did..

Love love love Lee reaching for Amanda’s hand! In front of Billy and Francine! That is not something you do for a work colleague or even a friend. I remember thinking that was so amazing when I first watched the show and watched that part a thousand times. And yep, obsessive behavior is me humming in mental health! wine and chocolate in hand, fuzzy slippers and robe on! Happily dwelling in the gutter of the rabbit hole

I don’t think it’s the first time he’s reached for her hand in front of them… but I do think it’s the first time he’s done it so deliberately/blatantly.
I also don’t think they ever had a “regular” work colleague relationship… they were always each others protector/saviour… and I don’t think anyone bats an eyelid at either of them making caring gestures toward the other–especially, in this case, since Lee was tasked with taking Amanda home, essentially guarding her/escorting her to the protective care of the “team on the house”.
Still: pass my helmet, please! swoon/thud

Didn’t Lee take Amanda’s had in the very first episode TFT? At the very end when she’s explaining how she found Lee and Billy asks for her help from time to time. Doesn’t Lee take her hand to leave while Billy and Francine are there?

He takes her by both arms.. lots of touching.. but I don’t think this is unusual for Lee.. I noticed he did that to Francine in Weekend – Lee is a touchy guy.. but… I think he touches Amanda the most 🙂

That is too weird because I was just looking at the DVD and right after Billy asks if they can use Amanda from time to time Lee says they have to go and takes Amanda’s hand to help her out of the chair. It happens quickly but he does it. I agree that he is a touchy guy whether being a gentleman or being comforting and Amanda gets the most benefits from that.

I love that aspect of Lee’s character, that he is touchy. It just yells at me that he is longing for a close personal relationship. I love it that he is so tactile with Amanda from the get go.
I remember him holding her hand as they left the hotel after her encounter with the lint picking baron in Times. I think that was the first time he walked a distance with her hand in hand. Not exactly the same as what we are looking at now in this episode, but it is the beginning of something, isn’t it?

Well, that shot’s mirror-imaged — since his tie stripes are pointing the other way, his lapel buttonhole switches sides, and the door hinge is visible on the right side of the door, but in the wider pics that’s the handle side — the hinge is on the left side. 😀
Hey does anyone else wonder what was done just to the side of Billy’s main office door? There’re two small-ish patches on the wall, like they spackled something…

So why does Dotty make all that extra hot chocolate? Is she expecting the boys to get up in the night and drink it? And in a coffee carafe?

Haha, KC, maybe the alcohol on Billy’s desk is standard government issue for the spy business, to brace up shaken spies who’ve just had an attempt made on their life? Maybe it happens often enough to keep the brandy (or whatever it is) with the first-aid stuff.
Lee is way off base in most of what he says here, but I wonder if he could be right about the masked man not intending to kill Amanda. No reason to warn her with that click of the slide; I’m not sure it does anything, and if it did, it could have been done already. The purpose then (apart from giving that great mirror shot) would maybe be to let her see the mask? To make Lee feel threatened even further? When I first watched this, I thought it was weird that Amanda was so positive the mask was “just like the men wore who killed Dorothy”. I mean, she couldn’t actually SEE the flashback we saw. I wonder if the report she read was that detailed?
I had to go back and see the shooting scene. This baddie shoots left-handed.

Yes I was thinking Lee was right in thinking the baddie didn’t actually want to kill Amanda.. which begged the question: why? Why not just kill her like he did all the others?? why make a faux attempt?
I think the attempt was to implicate Paul and further turn Lee against him, but then why not kill her??
He didn’t kill her because he needed her to go back to the agency and tell them all about the red hockey mask – whooooo which means it is to do with that day Dorothy was killed.. which whoooo means it has to be Paul.. (and there’s more to come on the mask)
Also, it increased and prolonged Lee’s terror – that he now knows someone is targeting Amanda..which is probably likely to push Lee even closer to losing his mind 😦
