Finally! We get to the scene we’ve all been waiting for- the bedroom scene!! 
This is our first look at Amanda’s bedroom – which is interesting given we’ve seen Lee’s long before – and Amanda is suppose to be an open book.. when really her character is quite an enigma no?
It’s dark, Amanda’s asleep in bed and there’s a knock on her window (on the first floor! )
The knock startles Amanda awake..
Amanda picks up the phone: Hello.
[rofl!!! what a great touch!!! and.. points out that Lee could have just called..(Amanda could have made up an excuse for the late phone call if Dotty had heard it) but noooo he has to climb the trellis and tell Amanda in person! ]
Lee whispers loudly at the window: Amanda!!
Amanda: What?
[so funny how she says that.. not who is it.. no realisation the person is at her window on the first floor! whahahaaa.. Kj is awesome here!]
Lee: It’s me. Let me in.
[How swoony is it that he doesn’t say who ‘me’ is.. they just know! 
]
Amanda gets out of bed.
[Interesting we can see her dressing gown there on the end of her bed- but she doesn’t put it on ]
She gives herself a bit of a shake to wake up and raises the blind –we see Lee clinging to the plant covered trellis – rofl! Lee looks like a Koala! there’s no graceful way to do that! whahahaa.. I love that Lee leaves his dignity behind because he is concerned about Amanda!
Amanda opens the window to Lee.
Amanda whispers: What are you doing out there? Come in.
(Amanda grabs Lee’s leg to help him in)
Lee: Help me in there.
(hooo haaa lots of touching going on as she ‘helps’ Lee in through the window )
Amanda whispers: I was gonna call you first thing in the morning.
Lee bangs something painful.
Amanda whispers: SSHHH. Are you all right?
Lee whispers: Yeah I’m fine, I’m fine. Sorry to barge in on you like this but it’s an emergency.
[love how Amanda tippy toes back to bed!]
Amanda whispers: No problem.
(Amanda gets back into bed and pulls up the covers, rubbing her hands together like it’s cold. Lee walks over and stands next to Amanda’s bed.)
Lee a little louder: Alright now. How did everything go with Chamberlain? Well?
Amanda realises her bedroom door is open.. lol Lee’s deep voice would certainly stand out – Amanda motions to Lee to stop talking, gets up to close the door and then turns on her bedside lamp and jumps back into bed.
I do wish Dotty had heard a male voice and come to check Lee could have hidden in Amanda’s closet with her things tee hee..
Lee: Well?
Amanda: It went just fine, it was textbook, you know…
…Well, he just talked about his travels and his work.
(As Amanda responds she ruffles her hair and wakes herself up.) Now there’s a pic that would be a good meme!
Kudos to KJ, she actually looks like it is feasible she just woke up and they’ve gone light on the make up (though not without I notice!).
[Alan also talked about why he isn’t married!!!! She leaves that bit out but then I guess that was the cappuccino conversation! Oh and there’s that textbook again! I want to read that one! ]
Lee: Hmm, anything unusual happen.
Oh my gosh.. how good does Lee look here??!!! Wish he’d come by my bedroom window! ahem..
So nice of him to fix his hair before climbing the trellis.. soooo romantic!
Amanda: No, nothing worth mentioning.
[Amanda seems to answer no- then she remembers the kiss-
and chooses not to disclose it.]
Lee: Well, you can quit tailing him now. Have nothing more to do with him. [Love how Lee calls it ‘tailing’ when really it’s ‘dating’]
[I love that this decision from Lee has nothing to do with jealousy. I also love that Amanda resists this- not because she is soft on Alan and wants to see him again.. but because she wants to do good work! Goooo Amanda! ]
Amanda: Now wait a minute. I’m doing a good job.
[Amanda thinks Lee is questioning her work.. interesting.. she is not yet secure in how Lee views her work. I think this has shades of Over the Limit and telling Amanda to go home..]
Lee: Yes, You’re doing just fine…
[‘fine’ lol.. he’s not exactly effusive is he! but then encouraging Amanda is not his priority at the moment- it’s her safety]
…But here, I wanna show you something…
Lee moves closer to Amanda’s bed- what a line to say as he moves closer to her bed.. whahahaha.. (be good iwsod!) Lee sits down next to her and pulls out a photo to show her.
[He’s on her bed! He’s on her bed! ]
…Here, see this guy standing in the back of him.
Amanda: Uh-huh.
In the wide shot both Lee and Amanda hold the photo with one hand each – again, they are both holding on to an object at the same time.. but drat.. in the close up they go and ruin it and have two man hands holding the pic- lol pretty sure that man hand is not Amanda’s!
I would have thought you’d be able to see the obvious tape recorder too! lol.. but nope I can’t see it!
Lee: He’s a terrorist by the name of Franco Necci…
[Or as I like to call him ‘Gelati’!]
Amanda reacts to this news.. IMHO she seems to be thinking – oh nooo what’s Alan gotten involved in.
…Now you factor that in and this is a totally different situation.
Amanda: But Lee, look. Alan’s just sitting there.
[what about the drama chasing after the van she saw?? and the ‘Soppphhhiiiaaaaa!!!!’ cry from Alan?!]
Lee: Even so, this could be a meeting. Now look…
(I’m looking!!! swoony!! lol.. I am not this silly about anything else in life honestly! smk turns me into an 8 year old girl sometimes! Is it just me?????)
… We know that Chamberlain is in DC to check out valuable documents…
…This terrorist group, Red February, might be after one…

Amanda: That’s what always happens. I start and then you just take over!
[wow!!! Isn’t this a fabulous come back of Amanda’s.. tells us so much about where she’s at with Lee and her work! Amanda is really coming into her own with her work – she’s standing up for herself and challenging Lee’s automatic reaction to take Amanda out of the situation entirely. Amanda has moved past this! I love this dialogue!! so telling!! Plays nicely into the two times in Wizard and Over the Limit where Lee told Amanda to ‘Go Home’ – exasperating Amanda..]
Lee: Amanda, I’m talking about terrorists here…
[Lee isn’t interested in Amanda’s career progress.. not right now! LOL.. but Lee her work is going to involve some danger – It’s what she does!!!! – okay what ep was that and what line am I playing with here people?!]
… I can’t have you take that risk…
[I love that Lee says ‘I’ not ‘we’ the agency!]
…Besides what can you do?
Amanda: I can talk to him.
Lee: Talk!
(Lee looks down at the photo again thinking)
Amanda: I’m the only one who has access to him….
(she’s right and he knows it )
…I’m supposed to meet him in the morning for breakfast….
(the shot cuts to hunky Lee.. listening intently to Amanda’s pitch here.. just look at how much these two have grown! ) 
good heavens.. he looks adorable here! Definitely need more pics of this!
…There’ll be a lot of people. You could be there.

When Lee looks back at Amanda here, Amanda senses she’s got him!!! lol.. she’s excited this is gonna work! she’s convinced him to let her stay on the case!!!! whoo hoo!!!

[lol!! don’t push it Amanda! tee hee.. but she’s on a roll!!! love it! It’s in the textbook. Lee really can’t say no! haaa]
Lee gives Amanda a pained look!

Lee: Yea-
He turns and licks his lips..
[She’s totally got his number haa! maybe in more ways than one ]
Lee shakes his head: I don’t know…
Lee looks down at the photo as he adds: if only we had more to go on with this. I’d say absolutely not.
Lee still resists.. hmmm time to pull out the final clincher Amanda!
Amanda: Lee, if we get any more to go on, I’ll get right in the station wagon and drive away.
Lee: You be damn sure you see us before you walk into that place.
[whooo hooo!!! Lee has agreed!!! ]
Amanda: I will.
Lee: It’s a deal.
(Lee offers Amanda his hand to shake on it)
Amanda: It’s a deal.
(Amanda takes Lee’s hand and they shake on it)
Lee: Okay.
(Lee looks Amanda seriously in the eye. Amanda is all smiles- thrilled to still be on the case and having talked Lee around – to see what she can contribute here!) 
Then.. in a moment.. everything changes!
Suddenly, Amanda’s smile vanishes..
Do you want a blow by blow pictorial?? I thought so
Still holding each other’s hand- Amanda looks down at her nightgown.
Lee’s eyes follow Amanda’s gaze.. (So glad it’s not that dowdy one she had on in Weasel!! )
Amanda puts a hand up to cover her neckline there.. whooo watch Lee’s thumb here during this bit – he does the little thumb caress that he likes to do He seems to look at his hand still holding Amanda’s hand. But he doesn’t let go!
Lee: Yeah. Ah.. [hoooo haaaa.. there’s bit of heavy breathing going on here no?? hearts racing.. fingers zapping with electricity..(exactly what Lee knew was missing with Karen in OOADPigeon 😉 )
I can hear it now – Amanda: dang! there’s that feeling I didn’t get with Alan!!! I feel it with Lee!! Oh my gosh.. he seems to be feeling something here too!!!! Oh my gosh!!!
and Lee? Lee: I love the feel of her hand in mine. I don’t want to let go. I could pull her hand towards me and kiss her.. I’m on her bed.. Amanda?? this is hot!!! Amanda is hot!! and she’s so precious to me- I don’t want anything to happen to her!
tee hee.. well I am sure you lot can do a much much much better job of this than I could. I’m no fan fic writer. but someone definitely needs to do a little fan fic of what’s going on in their heads in this moment!!!
Lee: Well,…
(Lee sloooowly releases Amanda’s hand from the handshake, grasping her fingers, and turning her hand over.. still not letting it go – I think Lee doesn’t want to let her go – because it feels good.. but also because they are taking the next step professionally – they’ve agreed to Amanda staying on this dangerous case – and Lee is truly setting Amanda free here- giving her the freedom to continue to do her work. There’s a letting go here of Lee’s hold on her career too.. that- and a whole lotta heat!!! It’s like in this moment the professional and private relationships they have are both altered.)
…I guess that’s it, huh…
Amanda looks up to see Lee looking at their fingers.
Lee looks up to meet Amanda’s eyes.. and finally releases her fingers.
… Till,..
[bit of trouble forming your thoughts there Lee? I know the feeling whgoabhyaobha!]
… breakfast!
(Lee looks wistfully at the window and then back to Amanda.. I don’t think he wants to go back down the trellis!)
Amanda: Hmm.
(Amanda nods)
[having trouble forming her own words?? whgoabhabahba’bu!]
Lee points at Amanda: You be careful now.
[what an interesting thing to say to Amanda.. given the sizzling moment they just shared.. I think it shows the professional is right here in 
this moment along with the personal… the two are very much intertwined with Lee and Amanda I think.. 
how about you?]
Amanda: Yeah, be careful going down the trellis.
[It seems to me Lee doesn’t want to leave.. but then I find it hard to see Lee here wanting to stay the night with Amanda – regardless of how hot things were for a moment- they are too good friends to just jump into such a big step.. I’ve come to see this as Lee hoping Amanda won’t make him go back down the trellis!! lol.. but.. by telling him to be careful – Amanda tells him nope – you gotta go back the way you came! tee heee.. she doesn’t make it easy for him! but.. she can’t be sneaking Lee through her house – no way!! lol!!! ]
Love the lopsided grin here.. oh Lee.. you are killin it!! He gives Amanda and quick look up and down.. hooo haaaa.. 
Laughs.. then gives her another.. Oh yeah! Lee is totally admitting to himself that he finds Amanda in her nightgown.. sitting on her bed? -hoooottt!!!
Lee: Oh- huh – down the trellis. I’d better go.
Amanda: Yeah you’d better go.
As she says this, Amanda gets out of bed.
but reaches out to grab Lee on the shoulder to stop him getting up.
ROFL! she seems to take Lee by surprise here! Was he expecting her to suggest he stay?? thoughts anyone??
…Please don’t get up until I turn the light off. 
Amanda turns to turn off her bedside lamp and Lee gives a look.. rofl!!
oh my.. Lee is hilarious here! To me it’s like he’s thinking to himself- what was I thinking?? this is Amanda!! Straight laced as anything! she’s not gonna ask me to stay the night! she’s flippin worried about the neighbours seeing me!!! Amanda’s not like any other woman I’ve known!
So funny how she keeps hold of his jacket like she doesn’t trust him to not get up! haa!
Amanda: …Tiptoe. (Lee nods. LOL!)
hoo haa.. very close there in the dark! but lol Amanda is so preoccupied with the neighbours any thoughts of the heated kind are completely gone! SMK does this so well – in an instant.. we go from professional debate, agreement, the heat of sexual attraction – to comedy and bemusement in a minute! Love it!!
Amanda and Lee tiptoe over to the window.. Amanda is poised to open the blind.. lol!!
…Are you ready?
Lee: I’m ready, I’m ready. [Amanda whips up the blind- rofl!]
Amanda: Be careful.
Lee: Yeah.
Amanda: Can you see?
Lee pauses halfway out the window to remind Amanda..
Lee: You be careful! Remember our promise?
[Anyone else find this swoony?? half hanging out the window.. he’s more worried about her safety.. and I love that he says ‘remember our promise’ – hmmm.. me thinks there could be more than one meaning here! ]
Amanda: I’ll remember. Look out, look out, look out, look out. Oh my gosh.
Lee: All right, all right, goodnight.
Amanda: There’s got to be a better way.
Amanda closes the window and the scene ends here.. define ‘better’ Amanda. The phone would have been an easier way – but.. it definitely would not have been as good or better!
Wow.. what a scene huh!!!! In just one scene, everything has changed! I won’t say much.. as I’m sure you guys will say it so much better.. but I’ll just add that now I think Amanda can be under no illusion that Lee only sees her as a friend – the heat was there for both of them to see and feel and to demonstrate to the other that they felt it.
Here it took them both by surprise.. and revealed much. This is the moment where Amanda realises – maybe Lee does see me that way?? I know what I felt and what I saw?!!! And Amanda has confirmation that her feelings for Lee are growing.. the attraction is definitely there.. it’s special.. and.. what’s she going to do about it?
For now, Amanda is revelling in the professional progress – thrilled to have earned her place in it.. and earned Lee’s trust her. A very significant moment for both of them.
Lee too must have noticed that Amanda was aware of the sexual attraction between the two of them. She didn’t pursue it.. she was modest.. but she also didn’t reject Lee.. and let him hold her hand Maybe Lee begins to think that they have a chance – this special friendship might be able to move into a romantic relationship now.. With men like Alan Chamberlain being interested in Amanda.. naturally.. it’s only a matter of time before one of them interests Amanda that isn’t dull as a stick! hmm..
Both Lee and Amanda at this point I guess are aware now of what’s simmering away between them, and they are asking themselves maybe – what now?? how to deal with this??
We shall see! for now.. they remember their promise.. and focus on the case..
I like to think their promise to each other was all the way back in ship of spies.. when they got married tee hee.. I’m stuck on that moment-something happened then that begun the change in both of them.. I think from then on there was an unconscious promise between the two of them.. here in this scene.. we see them make a conscious professional promise – while the personal simmers away barely beneath the surface.
What fun this is to explore! I’ve prattled on way more than I thought I would –I can’t wait to hear what you all think of this!!! [and it’s sooo much better after wizard and over the limit – I’ve always liked this ep after those two eps!!]

I watched this show us a child and loved it. Over the years, I have looked for it on various streaming services, but never found it, until this week. I have been binge watching this show since Tuesday and it has been the only show I have watched all week. Then I fell down the rabbit hole and found this site. I must tell you I love it. I watch the show and I read the commentary to see you had the same thoughts that I have. You do.
I loved this episode from beginning, middle and END! Sadly, the subtlety, sweetness and sexual tension of the bedroom scene, would’ve played out differently on TV in 2023.

First of all – is this Lee’s first time in Amanda’s bedroom? How did he know which room was Amanda’s? Amanda is not really all that surprised her there, though. I love it!!
Ohhh the handshake, linger… so sweet, so sexy, so intimate! And then her self-conscious covering of her chest while Lee holds her hand is absolutely precious.
I adore the touching. I adore their reactions when they realize that they are becoming more than just friends.

one moment that comes to mind is in Spiderweb – when Lee had been hiding in her house and makes an appearance once the family leave Amanda alone. at least.. I think that’s what happens. lol Might be remembering wrong!

There’s just so many things to love abt this episode…the best of course is this scene. The realiasation that what they feel for each other is more than friendship makes this scene so so intimate..just a simple touch,a soft linering of the fingers..Awww 😍

I love the innocence of this show. They don’t blatantly throw the characters together. They slowly develop their friendship until they are best friends – and THEN that’s when they can’t deny their feelings anymore. The mere touch of their hands in this scene is hotter and sexier than any scene that would be shown in present day. That’s what makes this show so great!

I’ve just finished these posts through the end of season 3 and have enjoyed the commentary and comments immensely. My mind must be gone in the gutter because when I see the end of this scene, I assumed she wanted the light off because the nightgown might be see-through & it was awkward to her.

Not a gutter mind at all. I have some nightgowns and pyjama tops that are hardly lingerie-thin, but they’re more revealing than I’d feel comfortable with around a man who wasn’t my husband or brother! I also wonder if it was because she isn’t wearing a bra, because there isn’t a nightie in the world that disguises that fact and it could be she was just realizing it.

lol… I’m picturing her shoving him into a closet once or twice, when she hears Dotty or the boys, or trying to hide him by standing in front of him and Lee’s sandwiched between a wall and Amanda in her night gown.

I can picture like … something happening that prevents him from going out the way he came in (neighbors waking up, someone walking by on a late night walk with their dog … etc) and she has to sneak him through the house, her boys wake up and she has to hide him somehow … LOL. Or dotty wakes up and she has to shove him in her closet, with all her … things.
Though I imagine they didnt do that because this scene (for a family show in the 80s that is) was racy enough.

Okay, I know I am REALLY late to this discussion (sorry! I have only recently found this blog a few months ago, I hope no one minds me gushing on all the old posts haha). I LOVED this scene, to me it’s where it becomes apparent to both characters that there is something there beyond ‘friendship feelings’. Heck, ‘something’ is an understatement, you could cut the UST with a knife in that scene! It was so thick it made me fan myself! LOL. Kudos to the actors for doing that change in mood so well! BB and KJ you two are the best!

Oh, no harm in being late. I’m way behind on reading and posting. I thought I should start at the very beginning, but I’m realizing that it’s okay to jump around too.
I agree with you here. I don’t think I fully appreciated this scene the first time I saw it. Other than the enormous UST here, I’m also drooling over how gorgeous Lee is. There are multiple times in the series when this man takes my breath away and this is one of them. He just climbed the trellis, his hair is perfect (to me, at least). He could loosen the tie and take off the jacket if he wanted (you know that climb up probably made him too warm). Amanda might not have let him leave, if Dotty and the boys were out. At least I wouldn’t. 😉

No I don’t think amanda would have asked him to stay if she were home alone, I don’t think she is ready for that yet and I think she knows that Lee isn’t really either, because a night like thst would change everything for them.
But they definitely thought about it 😉

I adore Lee’s statement, “I guess that’s it,” at the end of the handhold. Yes, “that’s it” (wrapping up business) and “that’s it” for now with this sexy interaction we’ve been having and that’s as far as it’s going to go. For tonight, anyway. “I guess” is filled with the wish for it not to be over. It’s so angst-y because he is longing for more but he knows this has to be it for now. Yes, that’s Lee…”sweet and gentle and wonderful” (thanks, Dotty, for perfectly describing him).

In regard to the hand holding, notice Lee runs his thumb over her knuckles, turns her hand over (Does he also caress her palm with the pad of this thumb? I couldn’t tell.) and then he sloooowly slides his hand out of hers to finally break contact. It’s as though he was reluctant to let go and wanted the physical contact and connection (?) with Amanda to last as long as possible. I have played this up a few times in stories I have written for FanFiction.net under the name WhiteFeather1965.

1. Lee doesn’t know that there’s a phone in her bedroom, so he doesn’t want to risk waking the family or not being able to get through.
2. He’s very worried about her (she may not even be home from the date yet, for all Lee knows), and he wants to make sure she’s safe and out of the way of danger.

I’ve loved reading everyone’s comments!! This is such a great scene. I could explore its meaning all day. Okay, here is my two-cents:
I loved when Amanda quoted Lee the textbook; its like she is becoming his equal. And, his look in response was priceless! I can hear him saying to himself, “Showoff,” in the most loving way, of course.
I am of the belief that Lee and Amanda have been out on a few dates since OTL so I don’t think the touch in and of itself is a new or unusual gester. Nor do I think that either of them was taken back by the feelings it produced. Remember how Lee took Amanda’s hands in his at the end of the cafe scene in Wizard? Neither of them seemed surprised by or uncomfortable with that gesture; almost like it had happened before. I think the time they are spending together away from work is making that progression seem natural and maybe even expected by them at this point in the timeline. IMHO what throws them off in this scene is their location (atmosphere if you will) — Lee in her bedroom, the lights dim (correction, the one light is dim – lol), he’s sitting on her bed, in close proximity of one another, holding her hand and looking into her eyes. I think at that moment, the reality of the situation dawned on them and their emotions swelled and they reacted, which made them both a little uncomfortable.
I think Lee is still like a deer in headlight regarding his growing feelings for Amanda. He already know about their solid friendship and the protective instinct he has for her; I think the depth of his feelings for her and the speed at which they are growing is unnerving for him, especially since I don’t think he is at the point of admitting it to himself of anyone else yet. That’s why I think he reacted the way he did … he was blindsided by the intensity of his feelings and how they are so easily stirred up, yet again.
After reading this post last night, I went and watched this scene over and over … and over again. One thing that stood out to me was that it wasn’t just Lee holding Amanda’s hand … she was actually holding on to his hand too! (woo hoo!!!!) She didn’t pull away as he began to “explore” her hand and when he turned it over, she had a pretty good grip on his hand as well. lol. And, she didn’t seem bothered by the time he took with her hand, which I found very interesting. She seemed more concerned about covering up than about getting her hand back. What does that say?
And about the covering up, I agree with the comments that maybe her response had more to do with her emotional exposure at the moment than anything else. Heck, she had no problem cozying up to Lee while they were looking at the photo and if ever there was a time to look … I think she saw the same fire that she felt in his eyes and suddenly felt like there wasn’t enough space between them. lol!!!
I believe Lee’s subsequent comment to Amanda about being careful was him trying to change the subject.
Not sure that I would said Lee didn’t want to leave or go back down the trellis when he was just sitting there. I think he was just thrown off by the moment and was trying to regain his composure. He needed a moment to refocus without looking like he needed to.
And, does anyone find it hilarious that Amanda won’t lift the window curtains any higher so Lee can come in and out without knocking himself silly or ripping his pants (I think he ripped his pants too! ROFL)?

I can see Amanda does also hold Lee’s hand.. that’s true. I felt she didn’t withdraw from his touch as he turned her hand over.. and when he does finally stop touching her she leaves her hand outstretched for a second like.. what? no more?! 😉 tee hee.. she can’t help herself.
I’m not seeing anything in what Amanda does that is a rejection of Lee- her covering herself is an indication that she’s feeling it too. the haste to cover up tells Lee (well this is my guess) that she’s feeling a really strong attraction to him, and that she is really surprised by it. She trusts Lee.. so it’s not about that.. it’s maybe more about her questioning her trust in herself at this moment..
Best stop touching him before I pull him closer towards me.. you know? 😉
They don’t at this point have that kind of relationship.. so I don’t think Lee would see it as a rejection. but I’ll have more to say on that in light of the tag (which probably gives a clue about where I’m headed!)

OK, I’m going to post before I read all of the comments, so I’m sorry if I’m repeating something. OH my Amanda has come a long way. She didn’t want Lee staying in her house in ROTP and she was super uncomfortable with being in the same bedroom with him in Weekend. Lee was smart and got the double room in SOS. Season 1 or 2 Amanda would have told Lee to climb back down the trellis and meet her in the backyard. Lee is even comfortable enough to sit on the bed to show her the pictures. And yes, love the handshake that turns into a handhold. There was nothing between Alan and Amanda with that kiss, but there is so much chemistry in the hand hold. I think she covers her chest with her hand due to the location. I agree that she has worn more revealing ballgowns, but they have never been alone in a bedroom like that so close together. I saw the last bit of the scene a little different. I thought she wanted the light off before they got up, because she didn’t want Lee to see her in the light in the pajamas. I think that is why Lee had that look, like come on Amanda, those pajamas are covering everything.

hmm interesting idea about the nightie.. hmm why didn’t I think that? maybe it’s because when she first turned the light on, she then got out of bed to close the door and then got back into bed- in her nightie.. she didn’t seem to mind then. and the way she is so quick on the opening of the blinds there with military precision lol! I think she was concerned about what the neighbours could see..

My take on why Amanda turned off the light was because she wanted a reason to turn away from him and she didn’t want him to see her reaction to his close proximity and the physical contact. I think Amanda, though she isn’t showing it at the moment, is just as swoony as we are regarding Lee’s gallantry.

Having now scrowled trough these lovely pictures about thirty times, I had a flashback to the kitchen scene in TGTN were Amanda and Lee also were shaking hands and feeling kind of awkward.

I saw this post come up last night, but it was so late and I was so tired. Whatever I would have said would have been nonsensical. This is an awesome post and I know we all couldn’t wait to get here. The beginning part of this scene with Amanda grabbing the phone, how Lee says “It’s me” and him hitting his knee on the window is all so Hepburn/Grant for me. They play off each other so well and this scene starts off a bit comedic and ends up romantic. Love it!
And I do have to say that I had this almost exact same experience once in my younger years. It was with a guy that I used to refer to as “recess” to my teacher friends. It was after an exhausting week at camp with my students and I was dead to the world. “Recess” was out with the teacher I met him through. As they were heading home this teacher mentioned that I lived in the area and they decided to stop by. My house didn’t have an upper floor so no trellis climbing involved. I woke to someone tapping at my bedroom window. I first thought someone was trying to break in, but my senses kicked in when I realized who would do that and then I heard my name being called. However, I let “Recess” in through the front door. Being in my pjs made me feel a bit vulnerable which is part of the reason I think Amanda was sort of covering up. Not from being prudish, but from realizing what had just happened and how she was dressed. Now that the professional conversation was over she started to really focus on the situation at hand and how she was dressed.
We’ve talked about Lee and Amanda’s touches before. There are the ones that are just the comfort (or joyful relief) ones when something serious has happened and the ones where Lee is leading Amanda somewhere. Most of those are the ones that they seem to be prepared for and they don’t seem to focus on any personal feelings they may have for one another. But then there are those that have some sort of emotional impact and they they sort of back away from each other quickly as if they’ve been shocked.
Lee was shocked at what he felt in kissing Amanda in Sudden Death. There was the unexpected heat in the car in Filming Raul. Amanda snatched her hands away in AABF, LODG, and Weekend. But after the kiss in SOS the knee jerk reactions have become less and less. Lee’s hugs have been more intense with some gentle rocking going on and more prevalent. In Wizard there was a lot of touching and a lot of acceptance of the touching. It starts as a simple handshake (I wonder how the pinky grab from OMIT would have played out here) and becomes so much more and they let it. And this touch they both just let linger. There’s electricity and heat, but no recoil. I think there’s even more of a growing acceptance of what is happening between the two of them.
When I first watched this I thought Lee’s hesitancy and lingering was because he just didn’t want to go back down that trellis. I still think part of that and I don’t see him as thinking that anything more would happen with Amanda. I did think that maybe he wanted to talk with her some more. Maybe drag the conversation out more so that he could spend some time with her. I mean they really haven’t seen much of each other in this episode at all.
I mentioned in another post about bringing up the title of this episode again. I was thinking about the word ‘affair’. In a marriage if someone has an affair it’s that whole cheating situation. And when Amanda reacts to Lee’s question about anything unusual happening she decides not to mention the kiss. I know Lee and Amanda aren’t married but I used to wonder if Amanda felt a little guilty for having kissed Alan once she realized there was nothing in that kiss. But then after Lee’s reaction to “stuffy, head in the clouds” Alan I thought she was again trying to keep Lee’s jealousy at bay.
There is a definition of ‘affair’ that says it’s a romantic friendship or passionate attachment between two people. Now to me that does describe Lee and Amanda and just maybe the lovely little affair is not meant to describe what happened with Alan, but what is going on with Lee.
Sorry this is so long. On a little trip now to a place in Michigan that is nicknamed the Alpine Village and it has a sister city in Switzerland. I happen to hit town right during Alpenfest and I may get to see some Swiss fashions, a parade, and a Queen’s Pageant. Mostly I’m anxious to get to the food though…I’m thinking there’s got to be some awesome chocolate somewhere.

Oh, I am glad that I waited to write my comment. I have been trying to think about all those touches when things got really electric for them. And you just recapped them Valerie, thanks. I couldn’t remember one after the kiss in SOS. There are lovely touches and meaningful ones after that, but I can’t remember one where they were both surprised by the touch. Can any one else? And I agree, they don’t recoil here and that is a wonderful change. They both observe it, they observe each other observing it. I think Amanda is a bit confused by it, I think Lee savors it.
Iwsod, I like the way you drew our attention to what was going on professionally as well as emotionally and physically between them. There is something very powerful about a very protective Lee (especially because his protectiveness comes from a fear of loss) letting Amanda go out on her own. Their is maturity in that and I also think there is love in that. And even while he lets her do it, he expresses his concern, not in a limiting way, but in a way that lets her know that he will worry about her. Maybe it is like Amanda in RS, “call me in an hour, if you don’t call, I’ll worry…” I think Lee liked that.
I think Lee isn’t as surprised by the heat as Amanda is. I think he was suspecting it would be there and the fact that he was right and the intensity and reality of it is overwhelming to him. There must be a bit of longing to be close to her, to not have that moment and sensation end, mixed with some trepidation of what will happen in the morning as she proceeds with this dangerous assignment. I think he just likes being near Amanda. He went to a lot of trouble to be there with her (climbing the trellis and all) and now he has to go and he doesn’t want to. I don’t think he is thinking about spending the night (although he is a guy, so it probably isn’t far from his mind) but he just doesn’t want that moment to end and yet he is still trying to figure out what is going on and what he is going to do about it. I do think at this stage in the story, Lee is aware that if there is going to be any woman in his life at the moment it would probably be Amanda. But he doesn’t know if it is wise, if it would work, if she would want him, or how to go about it. But he is going to have to do something, because if he keeps this up ( finding excuses to be near her and experiencing this kind of electric response to her) it will eventually mess up their friendship. I think this moment here in Amanda’s bedroom is proof to him that the status quo has changed and the one that they have now is very unstable. What to do?
I think Amanda is finally getting the memo… I mentioned something about things changing for Lee but Amanda hadn’t gotten the memo, I think sometime in the end of season 2. I don’t expect anyone to remember that, but I think she is finally getting it. I don’t think she knows what to do with it, or in what context to put it. Is Lee still dating Leslie? Has he left his old ways behind him? Is he crossing a line in their friendship here in her bedroom? All that and right after that unsuccessful attempt with Alan, which only confirmed to Amanda how much she cares for Lee and how poorly she has been able to keep herself from allowing those feelings to take root in her. Amanda is confused and it is a good thing she has this job to focus on. I still don’t think she would let her heart go and jump into something with Lee. She still needs to see some real indication that Lee would want all that she brings with her because she knows that anything with Lee would have to be a very real thing. She cares a lot for him and I think it would be impossible for her to start something if she knew it couldn’t go anywhere, the cost of losing their friendship and easy partnership would be too much.
I like the way you had Lee thinking, “this is hot, Amanda is hot… and so very precious.” That preciousness makes all the difference here.
And, yes, I am with you. Those wedding vows were real. They were seeds that went into prepared soil and now the little green shoots are poking their heads through the gardens in their hearts. Ok, I have been doing a lot of gardening this summer.
Oh boy. I just wrote a novel. Sorry. And worse, I bet there is more that will come as I chew on this lovely scene all day… Fun!

hiya me again… you were trying to think of a moment after ship of spies where there was some heat goin on between these two?
I thought there was some flirty heat goin on in the tag of Burn Out – when Lee kisses Amanda’s hand… but Amanda seems to cope fine with it – one reason why I don’t see Burn out as a big breakthrough moment for Amanda’s romantic feelings for Lee.. not only does Lee kiss her hand.. but he gives her a sexy wink too!!!
One other very hot moment which I think hasn’t been mentioned (forgive me if I’ve missed it) is the scene in Double agent.. you know – the belt! the belt! take off your belt!!! whooooo haaaaaa!!! There were two fires goin on there!!! 🙂
I wonder if the intensity of the attraction here takes them both by surprise because they have grown so close – it’s like they thought they’d put that silliness behind them or something..

Lee is surprised by it because Amanda is special to him. This whole being sexually attracted to someone that you have an amazing friendship with – is completely foreign to Lee- his experience of sexual attraction has never (IMHO) had any connection to a real friendship! or anyone who really truly knows Lee!!
For Amanda? I’m thinking she thought she’s put that stuff behind her..she tried to with Alan.. no good! and then.. bam!!! it’s in her face what she feels when Lee touches her!! Oh boy.. what to do??!!!

I agree 100% about the intensity being even more poignant because of how close they are and how special both of them have become, and , yes, especially for Lee. It is one thing to brush off a moment of sexual attraction or tension during something like in FR or the belt scene. But this is another world. This can’t be brushed away. I love it 🙂

I am in a small town called Gaylord and some of the architecture is like an Alpine village. These are some of the nicest and friendliest people I have ever met. I met Ricky Nelson’s sons today. They are doing a concert tonight to end the Alpenfest and they happen to be staying in the same hotel I am.

Amanda noticed the low cut of her nightgown and covered her decoletege with her hands. But I think there is also a subconscious element to this action. By her body language we can see she is not only feeling physically exposed, but emotionally vulnerable, as well. She crosses her hands over her heart and in so doing, she shields it from Lee’s unintentional advances. She reminds herself not to get too excited at Lee actually wanting to be close to her, wanting to touch her. Well, that’s my take on it, anyway.

SMK doesn’t often foray into Amanda’s bedroom – in fact, I think this is the first time and from memory there aren’t many other instances in the future. However, that’s what fanfic is for. 😉
Anyway, on with the show…
I wondered too why Amanda sleeps with all her jewellery on, especially the watch – who wears their watch to bed? I guess it was late after her evening with Alan, so maybe she forget to remove her watch. I’m not going to call it a “date” if we can’t call L&A dinners “dates”, so there! 😛
Well, the nightgown is still generous but at least an improvement on the frumpy night attire she has worn in the past (although we know she has at least one sexy nightgown in her wardrobe thanks to Princess Penny… oh, and let’s not forget the Hot Mama night shirt). 😉
I love this scene but one thing has always, and will always, bug the hell outta me – and that is Amanda abruptly going uber-prudish and putting both hands over her upper chest when she has worn much (much!) more revealing evening dresses in front of Lee. Yes, I know, this time they’re in her bedroom and they’ve both just realised they have the hots for each other… but even so, it still seems like an exaggerated over-reaction.
Never mind, there’s lots of other good stuff in this scene to concentrate on.
I like how they are both so concentrating on the case and practicalities during their discussion neither of them feel at all awkward about the situation, i.e. Lee being in Amanda’s bedroom at night and her in her, albeit conservative, night attire. Even when Lee’s questioning causes Amanda’s thoughts to stray into personal territory, i.e. the kiss she shared with Alan earlier in the evening, she still carries on as though this is a normal conversation.
Amanda does seem to exhibit a little embarrassment or awkwardness in that moment related to her memory of that event, but still no embarrassment or awareness of the quite intimate situation she and Lee are currently in.
Their conversation carries on as it normally would if they were in the office, until they share physical contact. Suddenly they are both confronted full on with the feelings and desires they have both been harbouring. I like the way you described their thoughts in that moment Iwsod – maybe you” should write that fanfic!
I see Amanda desperately trying to put a lid back on her feelings in the aftermath of this moment, as she has been trying to do since *Burn Out. To me, Lee has already realised he has an interest in Amanda and so in this moment he is more ready to accept and dwell on the intense feelings and awareness aroused by their physical contact. He seemingly wants to continue the physical contact for as long as possible, until he realises Amanda is uncomfortable, and that the gentlemanly thing to do would be to extract himself from the situation.
Good call Iwsod on the look Lee gives Amanda when she puts her hand back on his arm to stop him getting up. I never noticed how startled he looked for a split-second – maybe he did think she wanted to take the moment further! 😯 Definitely good fodder for fanfic.
The intensity of this interaction has taken them both by surprise. They both need time and space to process what just happened. I’m looking forward to analysis of their actions and reactions to each other throughout the rest of this episode.

Your comment “that is Amanda abruptly going uber-prudish and putting both hands over her upper chest” made me pause. I don’t think it’s as much about covering herself physically as it is emotionally. Her gown is pretty, yet conservative. Her emotions however, are all over the map. To use the Tupperware metaphor (was that Morley, originally?), I think the lid doesn’t fit anymore, and her feelings about Lee are leaking out.
I’m one of those who say that Lee and Amanda have gone on a few casual dates by this time. Lee is testing out his personal feelings, so this moment is stronger for him. Thus, the reluctance to let go of Amanda’s hand. it’s also why he would venture into Amanda’s bedroom instead of phoning. Her safety is personal as well as professional – more personal than ever. It’s as if he can’t stop himself. So, yes, when she grabs him, it’s a bit of “Whoa, what’s going on here? Amanda?!?!” Then “Of course, we need to be careful about the neighbors. What was I thinking?”
Amanda, on the other hand, has the sensation of electrical contact. She sees her emotions clearly and reacts by covering herself – equivalent to “get a grip, Amanda.” She pulls back, but notices Lee’s reluctance to do so. She has to gain back her equilibrium to get him out of the room before she can deal with her emotions. Methinks she didn’t get back to sleep so easily. She won something professionally – Lee’s acceptance of her taking a risk with backup. Huge moment – rather like him sending her around in the laundry to distract whats-his-face in “Vigilant Mothers.” But I suspect she knows what she’s won personally, as well, which gives her a cautious boost.

I agree with both of you about the covering up. I also liked the mention about the hand on Lee at the end. I agree with the thoughts that Iwsod put in there for him. He is shocking himself a lot this evening. I can’t wait to play with his thoughts after he got back in the car. I bet he had to sit there and take a few huge breaths before he could start the car and drive home. It is getting more difficult for him to keep this under wraps.

Yes, I know all the reasons she would have done this in the sudden realisation of the intimacy of the moment, the man, and the setting, and I like the thought about it being a representation of her protecting her emotions, but it still bugs me. Just one hand would have been sufficient.
Anyway, it has also got me thinking about what message Lee would take from that action. Does he think she doesn’t want (won’t ever want) that kind of relationship with him, or is he thinking he will have to be very gentle and very careful if he wants to have a more intimate relationship with her.
All this on top of sorting out his own feelings about the intensity of that moment too.

I tend to think that one of the things Lee is battling now is his undeserving-ness and inability to be what Amanda would want. In that frame of mind this would be a resounding “hands off, buster!” Not that I believe hat is what Amanda was trying to send his way at all. Actually I don’t think she had time to even think about the message she was sending him, I think she was busy receiving that memo…

Maybe “hands off” is too strong. But I do think that Lee feels very much the fish out of water here. What he would know to do with a woman in that very same circumstance is exactly not what he should do here. He has never been in this situation before, attracted to a woman that he cares deeply about, in her bedroom, in the middle of the night, with that woman’s mother and two sons down the hall. Plus this woman is his partner and the best friend he has ever had. I do think Lee is aware at some level;of how different this is and if he is the right man for her and in that way he is over sensitive to her signals. I think everyone is insecure when they are trying to figure out if someone the are attracted to is responsive and I think the uniqueness of this for Lee could cause him to believe she isn’t as open to things as he would hope for. I don’t see that Scarecrow bravado present between them, I think Lee is on tender hooks. Maybe I am reading to much into it all ( I tend to err on that side 🙂 ), but there has got to be some hesitancy on his part because they have to make this last for a whole season. I won’t say any more because now I am tempted to run ahead. Patience and control… my mantra….

Agree with everything you say here Morley. I think Lee will think a lot about this moment later. He must realise that a big part of her reaction there was protecting herself from the sort of relationships he has conducted in the past, but he must also have seen the desire in her eyes and actions as well. So, I think after contemplating these moments in her bedroom he will realise that she does desire him, and he has to ramp up his efforts to show her that he has changed and that she can trust him – that he can be an honourable (and patient!) man. To me he’s still wondering if he can be what she needs, but at the same time he is determined to make that transition. He is already most of the way there, although he may not believe it of himself yet.

And lol.. Amanda did say hands off in Weekend! lol..that seems like eons ago now~!! so much has happened between these two!!

As far as her covering up it could partly because emotionally she feels exposed and the touching is self comforting. But I always assumed it was because she’s wearing possibly a very think cotton night gown and no underwear for added coverage 😉

Like I said before, I have a nightgown like that, it is rather… um… shear. If there is ever a chance that I have to leave the safety of my room with it on I walk around a bit like Amanda here. True, it is a bit too late in this late night conversation to think of modesty, but it kind of goes with the way they were both focused on the case at hand and then all of a sudden the gears shifted. I hope hers isn’t as shear as mine…

Interesting that Amanda leaves her door slightly ajar when sleeping. Does she do this every night or did she just not shut it probably on this occasion? Who has a theory? Is it a “mother” thing? So that she can hear if there is any disturbance with the kids or the house?

I would think she left it open to be able to hear if the boys got up. We leave our door open so that we can hear the kids and so they can get to us, but for fire safety rules you are usually told to shut doors on the second floor because smoke rises.

My parents always slept with their door open. Silly kids that we were, we could never figure out (until we got older) why they sometimes sent us to bed early and then closed their door.

The open door is definitely a mother thing..I could never shut my door when ny kids were at home…I always had this phobia of something happening and if my door was shut I couldn’t hear, or wouldn’t be aware of sick kids etc…
I also think Amanda grabbing the top of her nightie was more of a realization that she was in her night gown while Lee was sitting on her bed….I think part of it was her feeling a little exposed and not in control of her feelings, especially since Lee was sitting on her bed and that alone put them in a pretty intimate position, especially since their relationship was definitely heating up.

I do love this scene – this is another one of a handful of pivotal scenes in the first half of season 3, along with the cafe scene in Wizard. I think for their relationship to go forward romantically, Lee has to respect her professionally (he’s just that kind of guy) and both these strands of their relationship move forward here.
Much has been said about Amanda’s nightgown, but it is very feminine in an understated way. And Lee looks very appealing even in his nonsemble (thanks for that, happycamper!).
I also love how Amanda raises her finger to Lee – he does it so many time to her (about 3 times in this scene alone), and I like seeing her giving it back to him. Go Amanda!

I agree Amanda and Lee are both aware of the heat between them, but I don’t know if Amanda has figured out that Lee is consciously aware of it (rather than subconsciously). And I think there is still some denial going on with our super hot super spy 🙂

Consciously aware? That is an interesting consideration. This came up with the whole Lee jealous/not jealous situation. Right now I think Lee just reacts a lot to things, especially regarding Amanda. He is the Scarecrow who acts before he thinks and his brain hasn’t caught up to his emotions. I don’t think he processes a lot or is hesitant to process it. I don’t think he even understands why he reacts the way that he does or gives deep credence to it. I still think there is a bit of denial there. Lee’s emotional side has been fairly dormant for so long and I still don’t think he has the ability to truly recognize or even verbalize what he is feeling, especially about Amanda. While others may see it he certainly doesn’t, at least not yet. I do think he sees Amanda as the person that he is closest to and one that he cares an awful lot about. I just don’t think he has connected the dots completely yet.
I’ve been on the fence about the whole dating, not dating thing. It’s hard for me to say that they are just because of what we actually see. I would think that what was deleted from scripts was deleted because it was not an official thing and TPTB didn’t want to portray it that way. I also think that Amanda (and Lee for that matter) would seemingly carry herself a bit differently if they were. I’m not saying that they haven’t been out, but I just saw it as friends, not dates.

I do think Lee is conscious of it, at least more than he ever has been before. I think he became conscious of how very important Amanda was to his life in OTL although he was a bit fuzzy about the romantic part of his response to her. (going with my order here, sorry). hen he was able to spend some personal time with her, taking their friendship into another dimension, from work to personal and he was able to explore how that felt. I think it brought him a lot of joy and I see that in that first scene of them together in Weasel when Amanda walks into the Georgetown lobby and Lee has this huge grin on his face and is glad to have her with him as the clean up the Q. Then we have Wizard and I do think that is a clincher for Lee. The regret he shows her about the four black books. The need to talk with her, the “it’s important to me that you care” even the gesture with the flowers at the end. Through all of this I do believe he is allowing a consciousness to dawn on him. I even think his reaction to her interest in Alan is a something he is aware of. I just don’t see him as dull headed about things as he has been in the past. He doesn’t just rationalize it or make and excuse for his reactions. He rolls it around in his mouth tasting it, like a wine taster. And then here in the bedroom, he allows it to linger, he is consciously paying attention to what is going on. He may have a bit of the sensation that he is watching himself as in a dream. But I don’t think he will throw Amanda to the other side of the car like he did in FR. 😉

I think we arrive at the same destination Morley, but we see the journey a bit differently!
But.. I think now we are at ep 5 and it’s ALLA, we are seeing things similarly!
In this scene, the dominant word for Lee which came to my mind was – curiosity! He’s curious, about how he is feeling..what’s happening between them, what’s happening in him.. and about what he glimpses from Amanda’s reactions to these events.
The way Lee turns Amanda’s hand over and explores it was an illustration of what’s going on for Lee now – he’s not ready to take a definite step, he doesn’t yet understand what’s going on between them- but since the events of Wizard enabled him to move on, and the events of OTL saw him realise how Special a friend Amanda is to him – and that a normal relationship with another woman isn’t really what he wants..(he prefers Amanda).. he is in an exploration phase.
I think I said this at the end of OTL. Which given the ep order differences may have gotten lost. I see wizard as first, then OTL. And at the end of over the limit – Lee is beginning to lose his denial of his feelings for Amanda – he is wanting to increase the level of friendship (no shop talk) and see what happens.. in himself.. in Amanda.. it’s all very new to him and I don’t think he has clear expectations- he just knows he enjoys her company – he’d prefer to be with his friend Amanda, than with his date Leslie. I didn’t see him as jumping into romance with Amanda at the end of OTL.
The thing that was missing – which is revealed to both characters in this scene- was that heat of mutual attraction. This was buried beneath the surface and neither had seen it yet. They denied it!! [Lee buried the attraction sooo deep after ship of spies 😉 ] Here? Sexual attraction reveals itself between them..when they combust spontaneously!! hooo haaa
I think this was lacking between them in OTL tag – it was purely friendship.. and they were not pursuing a romance.. just a friendship (but deep down we know better) -so I don’t think either would have called the dinner a date. This was the missing ingredient for me that led me to conclude it wasn’t a date..
ROFL at your line about Lee no longer throwing Amanda to the other side of the car Morley!
Your idea of Lee being a wine taster I think fits with my thoughts that Lee is exploring. new tastes! new experiences!!! 🙂

Amanda’s reaction reminds me of the story my brother tells about a time when someone called my dad in the middle of the night and woke him out of a sound sleep. My brother has a difficult time waking up right away even under the best of circumstances, but this time, he said that his body came fully awake the moment the phone rang. He leaped out of bed immediately . . . and just stood there, staring expectantly at the phone because his brain was no where near awake and he couldn’t think what to do. He said that what was running through his head was something like: “I’m supposed to do something. The loud noise means something. What does this mean? What am I supposed to do?!” Then, my dad answered the phone before he could remember that he was supposed to pick up the handset and say hello. The next day, he unplugged the phone in his room, and I don’t think he’s plugged it back in since. 😀
One of the odd things that’s always struck me about this scene is that Amanda is still wear all the jewelry that she wears during the day: rings, watch, necklace. I usually take all that kind of stuff off at night. Seems uncomfortable to sleep in.
I love Lee’s expression when Amanda stops him from getting up. It’s so clear where his mind has just been. 😉 Then, when Amanda stops him, it looks like he’s wondering if she’s been thinking the same thing he was and he’s not sure what to expect. It’s like he’s half expecting Amanda to stop him from leaving and he’s trying to decide quickly what he’s going to say to that: equal parts flattered and awkward. Then, once he realizes what Amanda is really concerned about, he has this wonderful I-can’t-believe-this, what-was-I-thinking expression. 😀

* why did you leave out the pants ripping? 😀 (Before “Oh my gosh!”) Even more undignified for Lee than just climbing back down the trellis–climbing back down with ripped pants!
* LOL at the fake (plastic) ivy growing on Amanda’s trellis. I guess after Lee squashing the plants by the kitchen window, Amanda “planted” fake ivy on the trellis just in case Lee decided to climb up for a visit. No? 😀

I just love this scene on her bed….it’s so intimate and innocent with all the hand touching….far from some of the raunchy love scenes of today’s t.v….it left so much more to my imagination…woo hoo
