Amanda and Alan are left alone.. it seems Amanda wanted a moment with Alan after everything that as happened.
Amanda sighs and tosses her head..
Alan: Tourist?
[I think Alan was about 90% sure Amanda was not an agent and just a tourist. She had him fooled!]
Amanda: No, I’m not…
…I’m sorry Alan…
[Is it just me or is Amanda thinking of their kiss when she says this.. I think she is..]
…I didn’t mean to trick you…
[Interesting.. she did mean to not reveal she was an agent. Maybe by ‘tricking’ Alan she refers to how she led him to believe she would be open to a romantic relationship? when really.. she never really was (it was a flight of fancy)? I think she need not worry – I don’t think Alan was terribly emotionally involved in their relationship 
Alan doesn’t seem to mind so much- what do you think?]
Alan quietly observes Amanda as she talks.
Cue the sad theme again!
… I think you’re very special…
…and you made me feel very special too.
[this all sounds like a goodbye to me! Alan made Amanda feel special? glad she thinks so.. but umm…. he didn’t do anything for me! ]
Alan: You are very special, Amanda.
Too right she is. You know, I think Amanda enjoyed that he made her feel special. But I don’t think she needed to hear it- not from him. She knows she’s special..
Alan says the words.. but I don’t know how deeply he believes it or Amanda believes it. He hardly knows her- though I guess he can be grateful for the help that he got from her.
How interesting that in Wizard we had Amanda telling Lee he is a pretty special man. And in Over the Limit, Lee tells Leslie that Amanda is very special.. and here? Alan made Amanda feel special.. a running theme here??
– Lee needs to tell Amanda he thinks she is special!!! 
Amanda: I really didn’t mean to trick you, you understand?
[Alan she wants you to say it’s okay! ]
The sad music says- this was never meant to be.. hooray!!! tee hee..
Alan quietly: I understand,…
(He takes a step closer to her)
… I understand.
He takes Amanda’s arms and looks at her..
I think Alan is asking- sooo now everything is out in the open – do we still have something here?
Amanda leans in to give him a kiss..
and he joins her-
I think Amanda’s answer, by initiating this chaste kiss is: Goodbye.
[hip hip hooray!!!]
What a lovely guy Alan is… what a tragedy that it wasn’t meant to be.. they could have been so good together! He would have been good to Amanda. – Nah.. I just made all that up- I think that’s what the writers (and the music) were hoping to inspire, but personally I have no emotional connection here at all to Alan and Amanda’s relationship. She’s way better off without him. The guy was a real lightweight.. a lovely little fantasy to admire his ownhair from a distance.. but the connection for me was never one of substance! How about you?
Amanda pulls back and ends it.
She’s made it clear to Alan in this kiss that this is a goodbye-
Alan takes a couple of steps back realising that’s what this is.
[Yep. you don’t deserve her! ]
I don’t think either of them were thinking they would be seeing each other again! If Alan was thinking that – then he was still in the fantasy!
Alan accepts her goodbye.
Alan: Ciao, Amanda.
Amanda: Goodbye, Alan.
[love how she says ‘goodbye’.. it’s like: I’m not Italian- I don’t say ciao, I don’t belong in your world. this is me. I say goodbye! ]
Amanda smiles broadly.. happy with how they’ve parted.. says a lot!! there’s no regrets there from Amanda and that’s great!!!!
Alan turns to walk away.. and Amanda watches him leave. 
She sighs heavily… IMHO not because Alan is leaving.. but because of where things now stand for her with her love life..
she’s just said goodbye to a man who was wrong for her, but she could have tried something with.. and what’s ahead for her at this point is unclear. But Amanda is going to stick with reality. Her lovely little fantasy is over.
Again, I think she’s thinking of Lee here- what happened the night before, and what the future holds.. At this point she can’t be certain of what Lee wants.. but I think she must see that it is Lee she wants- not that I think she will jump into anything.. but she’s very self aware! She wants him, but is not sure if she can have a relationship with him or what’s to come you know? There are so many unknowns at this point.. ohh I’m sure you will all put it so much better than I can!
It’s always been a bit strange that Lee didn’t see this little exchange.. but I am glad he didn’t. It means any future actions he takes will be because of him and Amanda and not pure jealousy..[to react in jealousy to me diminishes the choice of how you act]
Maybe it also would have made things more explicit between them when at this point that is maybe moving the story along too fast.. so for me, I’m happy Amanda got her goodbye kiss, and Lee didn’t see it! [did I just type I’m glad Amanda kissed another man? what am I nuts?! lol !! no really I am.. especially because it was a goodbye!! ]
Okay everyone.. back with the tag next up!!! [I didn’t want to have a gigantic final post on this ep and rush the tag – so have left it to the next post and this one is a little shorter than normal.. ] byeee for now!

IWSOD, every time I see this ep, I’ve always wanted Lee to witness the kiss so he could see that if he sat on his butt too much longer he would lose her…..but then I read what you said about jealously diminishing your choice in how you act….and it made me change my mind….because if Lee only wanted Amanda because he was jealous of another man, then at some point he would miss the wonderfulness of discovering his true feelings for her…Thanks for showing me a different way to look at this kissing scene…

The happy wanderer here, back from the little Alpine village. For the longest time I did like Alan, but walking through this episode in this fashion has opened my eyes to several of his flaws besides the fact that he’s not Lee. His concern for his sister seemed to always be somewhat secondary. And he obviously wasn’t vested enough in Amanda (at first) for a real relationship. She was a way to kill time. And then to put her in a position of possible danger, he’s special all right. Special in how he helped to open Amanda’s eyes a bit to what she really wants and a fantasy isn’t it.
Amanda is very concerned that Alan feels as if he’s been tricked and she goes out of her way to apologize and make amends. She is just that kind of person. Glad to have that little good-bye to see that there are no lingering feelings on Amanda’s part. I go back and forth with Lee seeing the good-bye or not. I do like the fact the he was mature enough to leave them alone without getting all crazed. It’s funny how we don’t get to see a Leslie good-bye. She just disappears, which is fine with me.

I have never understood why she kissed Alan here, especially since it was a good-bye. Why not shake hands or hug? Yeah, I would have thought that Lee could have seen their kiss, but then again we would have thought Amanda would have heard Alan yelling, “Sophia”, into the phone too 😉 Oh well, glad he didn’t!

So what do I think? I think I really like the comments about “special” and Amanda’s love language. I like the way Jesress noticed that Alan was just realizing this. And I have always hoped that Lee not only saw the kiss but heard the “special.” I agree with Iwsod, that if Lee did see it and felt jealous then it might diminish the motivation for his actions. But what if he heard it and thought, “Doh, I know she is special! Somehow I want to tell her that and not let someone else tell her that.” And if he saw that kiss, he would see that it was a goodbye and Amanda wasn’t interested. But he would also have noticed that Amanda wasn’t some inert woman just waiting around until he figured out exactly what to do. She is an attractive woman and if he wants to explore something he will need to put some action behind his musings.
I also like the chin movie idea. 🙂

I didn’t really think about it until looking at the pictures here, but I get the sense that when Alan says that Amanda is special, he’s really realizing for the first (and last time). Before, he was just looking for someone to flirt with and spend time with to take his mind off of his troubles and wasn’t being too particular about it. Now that he sees Amanda for who and what she really is, it suddenly dawns on him that he had someone much more special than he ever expected. It’s really only sad for him because she’s already interested in someone else, and he won’t have the opportunity to get to know her even better. Alan said earlier that he hasn’t gotten married because his work and constant travel would make it difficult, but Amanda has her own work and a busy life that doesn’t really have room for someone like Alan, either.
On the brighter side, there’s someone much closer to home who is already sharing in Amanda’s life. 😉

Iwsod, your comments picking up the thread of “specialness”: Amanda telling Lee he is special in Wizard, Lee telling Leslie that Amanda is special in OTL, and Alan making Amanda feel special reminds me of the Five Love Languages (discussed at Neds). Alan says the affirming words that make Amanda feel special (even though ultimately they are quite shallow and not heart-felt). Lee feels that Amanda is special (and even tells Leslie) but he doesn’t (at this stage) verbalise this to Amanda. Amanda needs that verbal affirmation to feel loved and cared for, and she isn’t getting it from Lee – maybe this is part of Alan’s appeal (other than his (apparent) good looks and ownhair).
I actually think that Alan is being quite genuine in this scene, although this is in his own limited way. Maybe he just doesn’t feel as deeply at this point in his life?

yeah.. this is Alan attempting to be geniuine 😉 tee hee… I still find him pretty shallow..He still doesn’t even know Amanda at all! I guess he was asking if there is something there and can he get to know her.
Alas… it’s a no! And the chin must roam the earn wandering aimlessly and searching for someone to love – lol.. I’m sure he’ll recover.. 1 cappuccino and he’ll have forgotten Amanda.. heck he’ll probably head back to that sales girl and sprout more poetry 😉

Alan and Leslie would make an interesting couple. Both of them seem to be based out of Europe, and they might travel in similar circles with some prominent people. I wonder how Leslie feels about art. It would be fun to at least see them try it.

Your wish is my command…better? Alan does have a little bit of a fish face when he’s not smiling, I will admit. He is not in Lee’s league in the looks category for several reasons. But he’s just not quite a scoundrel to me for some reason as was the Dodger or James Delano. He almost steals the Declaration of Independence for his half-sister! He’s not a total creep. Plus I never saw Alan as a threat. And I can totally see Lee doing that same stupid poetry trick with a pretty salesgirl. From the beginning Amanda knew this would be nothing more than a lovely little affair or fantasy as you’ve put it. Leslie was more of a threat IMO – that was all personal and intentional on Lee’s part and not business.

I just read this comparison of the threat levels of Leslie versus Alan and made me think of how I was viewing Amanda’s little foray into a fling. So Amanda tries out how Lee handles or used to handle relationships and Lee tries the normal, more personal serious type of relationship that Amanda is used to. Interesting.
Now, if I show back up here today, please shoo me away. I really need to do some stuff around here before my family attacks me.

For the last two days I have given up caffeine, milk and dairy!! I must say.. I am sooo tempted by that rabbit hole right now!!! enjoy!!!

Hope that goes well!! I know having to change your diet is no fun…3 years ago I cut all wheat, barley, and rye gluten; and 2 years ago coffee from my diet for health reasons…even though it’s a pain it is so worth it 🙂
