Just walk with me.. through the order of Season Two episodes!

Hi Everyone! We  will take a short rest stop in our walk through the smk episodes to consider the order of season two episodes!
Here is JWWM’s suggested Season Two episode order:

1. To Catch a Mongoose
2. Times They Are a Changin
3. Double Agent
4. Legend of Das Geisterschloss
5. A Class Act
6. Our Man in Tegernsee
7. Affair at Bromfield Hall
8. 3 Faces of Emily
9. Brunettes Are In
10. Car Wars
11. Playing Possum
12. Ship of Spies
13. Spiderweb
14. A Relative Situation
15. A Little Sex, A Little Scandal
16. Life of the Party
17. Odds on a Dead Pigeon
18. Delirious on Arrival
19. You Only Die Twice
20. Burn Out
21. Murder Between Friends
22. Vigilante Mothers

If you see any reason why this can’t be right- please let us know! I’m open to changing it..
So I will say for now it is a provisional season two episode order!!
(at least till I’ve watched through them all)

As you’d expect, all the short-haired episodes have to come toward the end of the season..

Both ALSALS and LOTP are the first two short haired episodes.. as Billy has his old chair in these episodes.. and then gets a new chair..

The Europe episodes and all the travelling and changes with production due to the Olympics in LA, make props and hair pretty useless in figuring out the order of the early episodes..Plus the inclusion of Lee’s Porsche in Double Agent? They decided to make Charity begins at home later in season 2, and so they used a car very similar to Lee’s Porsche- but if you look closely.. you’ll see it’s not the exact same car.
So episode order has been worked out mainly based on the progression of the personal/ professional relationships..

Huge thanks to Morley who has had a huge hand in putting his list together.. sooo I wouldn’t call this list ‘iwsod’s list’ maybe.. maybe the JWWM list? Are you ok with that Morley? it’s team effort!
I’m going to watch the season in this order and see how it feels.. anyone else going to do this? I’d love to hear what your experience of this order is! I’ll update here again when I’ve finished watching season 2 in this order.
HERE is the JWWM post on the Season Two Production order.

HERE is the JWWM post opening up discussion on Season Two possible episode order..

and HERE is the thread on Nedlindger’s Forum where the order was mostly discussed.

There are no right or wrong answers.. so feel free to share your own ideas!

Enjoy!!!

  1. Hi! I hope you don’t mind me adding comments so long after your discussion. I just started rewatching SMK and showing it to my husband and children. I got impatient and started watching ahead of them at night and then rewatching when they have time. 😉 Anyway, I noticed in The Legend of Das Geisterschloss that Amanda tells Lee that she has told her mother that she has gotten a new job at IFF, but that in Double Agent (which your list has before TLDG) she has a conversation with her mother mentioning her job at IFF which is clearly not her first time mentioning the job to her mother. I paused the video when rewatching with my family to tell them that the episodes must be out of order because she tells her mother about being hired in the one I hadn’t yet shown them. In fact, that discrepancy is what made me look up the alternate episode order in the first place. So, I would propose that Double Agent should come after TLDG.

    • We don’t mind at all, in fact, we love it! All posts are open for comment anytime. And it is a fun reminder to see comments people make on episodes we’ve not discussed in a while. Good catch on the job mention! I’m not one of the ones who loves a good discussion of episode order, so I will leave this to those that do, but I just wanted to say hi and welcome to the blog!

    • Welcome, Emily. Nice name 🙂 Did your family look at you like you were completely crazy when you pointed out that discrepancy?

      • Thank you. 🙂 I think they were somewhat amused, and probably not terribly surprised. I’ve been pausing to point out other things, too, like “Did you see the way he looked at her?” and “Have you noticed how he seems to care about her more and is touching her more often now since she’s been praising him and making him feel respected?” (End of season 1 and beginning season 2.) I’ve even used some examples from the show to have some interesting discussions with some of my kids. I think they enjoy it some and think I’m a bit crazy some. 😉

        • You’re definitely in the right place then 😉

        • No, not crazy at all! Or maybe, we’re both crazy. I used examples of Lee’s less than stellar behaviour in season 1 to warn my girls with what not to put up with, no matter how hot the guy is. 🙂 And of course, they laugh themselves sick at some of the ‘fashionable’ outfits worn and shriek even louder when they realize I wore stuff like that. 🙂

    • Hi Emily! Mind??? WE don’t mind.. we love it!!! 🙂 go for it!!!

You are free to indulge your passion for all things smk here lol.. (just don’t jump ahead of where the walk is up to and spoil me lol!)

      This is a fantastic observation!!!

Given what you’ve noted here- I see no reason why double agent could be after the legend of das gorgeous European haircut! 😉
I’ll try and second this observation over the weekend.. (sorry it’s quite a while since I’ve seen these eps so I don’t remember 😦 If anyone else gets to it first – please let us know! Then, I’ll update the listing with these eps switched around over the weekend 🙂 Whooo hooo!!

Looking forward to hearing more of your insights Emily! Welcome!!!!!

    • Sorry for the delay Emily!

Emily can you help me out? Where in Double Agent is the bit where Amanda talks to Dotty about IFF? I’m trying to get out of watching the full ep. Not enough time!

but based on what I wrote in the first post of das geisterschloss it does seem that I thought that was the first time Amanda had admitted working for IFF.. (probably having missed the double agent reference to it). can you help me out? or anyone?

      Bye!

      • Okay… I found the bit in Double agent!
Amanda says: Amanda: Oh, Mother, that’s the truth. Now, the film company that I work for, IFF, wants to buy a book and the contact was at this… bar.

I don’t know if this is the first Dotty knows of IFF… maybe..

In Fearless Dotty there’s this conversation:
Dotty: You should have come right home…. I know you have business obligations, you’ve always been very responsible when it comes to things like that, but we should have come right home.
        Amanda: Well . . .
Dotty: Did they like your work?
        Amanda: They didn’t say.
Dotty: Ah, well, you see? That is big business for you. Ninety words a minute, no mistakes, and they haven’t even got the decency to say thank you.

Big Business… doesn’t sound like pet minding stuff.. it’s been absolutely ages since I’ve revisited this time in the story.. is there any other late season 1 references to her work?

edited to add: found this in Weekend:
Amanda: Oh, so do I, but I’ve got too much work to do.
Dotty: I hope this company you’re working for realizes you’re missing a beautiful weekend in the country. You might mention it.

whoooo edited to add again: found this in Mongoose:
Lee: So what does your mother think you’re doing in London?
Amanda: Well, I told her that my boss wanted me to look up an old high school friend.
        (okay! that’s it I’m done!)

Seems Dotty knows she’s working for an international company/ big business?

        • I think I was assuming her mom thought she was doing some kind of contract work before (which I think she basically was). In TLDG, though, she says, “I told my mother I had gotten that new job with IFF, which is true because IFF is the agency’s cover. And then I told her that IFF was sending me to Salzburg, which is also absolutely true. So far, no lying… ”

Since she explicitly calls it a “new job” and points out that that makes it true being the cover, I think it’s the first time she’s told her mother about IFF specifically and she is probably calling this a regular position now. This would make it come before Double Agent.

Actually, I did notice that Mongoose statement you found, too. I wondered if that should move TLDG up before Mongoose since she called him a boss instead of just talking about a company she was doing work for. I need to go back and re-watch more of season 1 to see what else they say about her jobs. (I did see a post that she wears an outfit in TLDG that was purchased in TCM, but I’m wondering if that was a mistake by the wardrobe department rather than an intentional timeline event. I didn’t notice it myself, but I didn’t pay a lot of attention to the clothes. Still, I suppose that could go either way.)

I also noticed today as I was looking up these scenes again that she was very excited in TLDG about seeing a castle for the first time. “It’s a castle, right? … Oh my gosh, that’s my very first castle!” But in The Times They Are A Changin’, she sees a castle with Lee and makes note of wanting to bring her family back to see it because it’s so beautiful. So now I wonder if even that comes after TLDG. At this point, I’m thinking TLDG may be first this season (excluding CBAH), with any of TCM, TTAC, or even DA next.

          • Hi Emily,

All sounds good to me! I think SMK were a bit sneaky and left it a bit vague for us. When did Dotty know? It seems to me there is no clear answer.. yes Amanda says in Double agent IFF – but she had been talking about a big company end of Season 1.. soooo I’m not sure I can know the answer.. we just go with something we like and that’s good enough me thinks 🙂

Gosh. I’ve got to try and remember what order I had for season 2 now lol.. I can’t think of any reason why I would have my heart set on either order for Double Agent/Das Giesterschloss.. so I’m happy to swap them around 🙂

Whooo if you watch season 1 please let us know what you find! 🙂

lol wardrobe error? continuity? yes they pop up and at the end of the day I figure it’s a personal judgement call if we disregard it, or if we incorporate it into our own episode order listing.. I think there is no right or wrong answer here – but I’m not saying it isn’t something worth questioning and discussing.. I’m happy to have heard your take on things Emily and I find it interesting! 🙂

For me with the ‘very first castle’ moment in Das Geisterschloss, I don’t have a problem with putting Times they are a changing before it. Because where Lee spent his summer could be seen as a palace rather than a castle – it’s not a fortified castle like the one overlooking Salzburg. But- I must say: I enjoy that you are questioning and challenging and I look forward to hearing what other goodies you uncover! 🙂

Anyone else got any thoughts on this? or any reason why we can’t go with this order?

            1. To Catch a Mongoose
            2. Times They Are a Changin
            3. Legend of Das Geisterschloss
            4. Double Agent
            5. A Class Act
            6. Our Man in Tegernsee
            7. Affair at Bromfield Hall
            8. 3 Faces of Emily
            9. Brunettes Are In
            10. Car Wars
            11. Playing Possum
            12. Ship of Spies
            13. Spiderweb
            14. A Relative Situation
            15. A Little Sex, A Little Scandal
            16. Life of the Party
            17. Odds on a Dead Pigeon
            18. Delirious on Arrival
            19. You Only Die Twice
            20. Burn Out
            21. Murder Between Friends
            22. Vigilante Mothers

I was going to go through and watch season 2 in this order Emily, but time hasn’t been on my side. so I’ve never gotten back to it!
If you (or anyone else) do get to watch it I’d be really interested to hear what you uncover!

  2. I like this order, Iwsod. This is the order I wrote the season two Scotch Thoughts and Window Reflections stories in. (I promise they will be published soon!)
When I rediscovered SMK I sped through it on Amazon. I remembered liking it when I was younger, but as I re-watched it I felt a bit jumbled up as the love story unfolded. I really liked Lee and Amanda and yet I often felt as though their characters were treated in a rather shallow way and it seemed odd to be because of all the detailed nuances in the characters that was drawing me. So I began to think about that detail work that each actor was putting into their characters and what I knew about how an actor builds a back story for the character they play. Then I saw that the airing order was sometimes messed up (Amanda’s hair was a big clue in season 2) And I began to take liberties with the viewing order. In doing so I have come up with a story that I find very compelling. I have no idea if that is exactly what the producers were after, but, oh well, it works for me. I am going to use my stories to try to explain that order and make it work for others too.
Kind of fun, I think. 😉

    • gah! I’ve been hoarding your season 1 stories.. haven’t gotten back to them even though I’m busting to read them! I’m so weird!!!

Watching season 2 in this order and getting to your stories Morley are on my list for when I take a holiday!!!

  3. I totally agree! As I have mentioned before, watching it in a more logical order has exponentially increased my enjoyment of the show and the wonderfully slow and subtle progression of Lee and Amanda’s relationship.

  4. This is one of the things I love about this blog. I always discover some facts that I had no clue about or was not aware of at the time this show aired. While I loved SMK I don’t think I realized just how deeply others loved it as well and the depth of knowledge possessed by some. For some reason I never connected the European episodes and production issues with the Olympics in LA. What’s strange is that my first teaching experience was in Long Beach, CA. The Olympics were going on at the same time I needed to be there. I couldn’t fly into LAX because of all the traffic and general craziness. I ended up flying into Long Beach instead.

When I first re-watched the show it was through Amazon and I watched it in the order first presented. I then began to search out more info and came across this lovely blog along with some fan fiction and a few other tidbits. When I got the DVDs I picked episodes here and there to watch. Upon further viewing I have been trying to watch in various orders to get an even better picture of how this wonderful relationship progressed. For some reason no matter what order is suggested it just means I get to watch it more and I love when others give comments as to why they think one order works better than the other. It just continues to show how deeply this show moved all of us. Whatever the order I’ll always be watching.
