16/19 Season Three, Episode 13: One Bear Dances the Other Doesn’t – Scarecrow and Mrs King

Amanda is reunited with her mother and Zernoff.
Amanda: Mother!
Dotty: Amanda!
Amanda: Are you all right? Oh Mother!
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_180050.880
Dotty: How did you find us?
Amanda: Well the Mr Marshmallow sign’s right next door.
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_180053.680
Zernoff:
You called the police?
Amanda: Not exactly.
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_180055.288
Dotty:
What do you mean Not Exactly???
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_180056.884
[LOL.. there it is again – not exactly!]
Amanda: Well, I did call the authorities,..
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_180058.485
[Love it! Amanda doesn’t lie here.. she didn’t call the police, she did call the authorities.. the agency!]
…but look I didn’t even know where I was going until I-
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_180100. 88(Amanda pauses to listen to a whirring sound)
What’s that?
Zernoff: Ah, they are taking down the walls of this place….
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_180629.982
(At hearing this, without a word Amanda walks over to the other side of the room while Zernoff and Dotty continue talking)
…It is not all what it seems.
Dotty: It’s a hoax Amanda, the whole thing’s a hoax. The police car, the debriefing centre-
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_180635.588
Zernoff: All because of me, They want the information I gave to your government.
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_180639.190
(Dotty and Zernoff watch Amanda.. they seem to be a little unsure of how she’s taking this!)
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_180640.393
(We cut to Amanda who is frantically checking out a mirror on the other side of the room. )
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_180648. 83
Amanda:  Hmmmm
We cut back to Dotty and Zernoff.. [now even more concerned at Amanda’s bizarre behaviour.. lol!! too funny!]
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_180649.283
LOL!!! Dotty and Zernoff share a look..
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_181418.326
[Hilarious!! to us Amanda is trying to scope the place and figure out what to do.. To Dotty and Zernoff, Amanda is losing the plot!]
Dotty (to Zernoff quietly):
I uh,…
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_181419.926
…I think she’s overwhelmed.

SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_181421.260
We cut back to Amanda who is not paying any attention to them at all haaaa..
Amanda turns and dumps the contents of her purse on the table and without looking at them she says:
We have to get out of here.
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_181644.276
Cutting back to Dotty and Zernoff.. they are completely baffled at her behaviour. [I think they think Amanda is psychotic here in response to this scary situation!]
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_181644.810
Amanda finds something green in her bag.. a green string or  rope? [I’m not sure what is yet.. I’ll stay tuned!] SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_181901.101
Dotty and Zernoff are watching Amanda intensely.

We cut to outside, where workers are taking down the walls.
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_182039.386
The baddies are watching them at their work..

Kurtz: They’ll be finished in about an hour or so.
[come on Leeeeeee!!! You’ve got an hour or less before the freezer activates I mean before the baddies kill everyone!]
Lawrence: We can’t risk being seen leaving here with Zernoff and the woman. [Um there are two women there now no? you guys forgotten about Amanda already?!]
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_182044.724
Kurtz: Luckily, Aero North leads the defence industry in the application of exotic toxins…
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_182656.907
[I soooo couldn’t make out what Kurtz was saying here!!! thanks soooooo much to Karyn for transcribing this episode!!!!]
(Kurtz holds up one of those weird darts he was using earlier)
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_182657.706
(He tosses it to Lawrence – who catches it looking a bit terrified)
…Don’t stick yourself!… [Oh do! please do!]
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_182700.377
……It’s poison, it leaves no trace…
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_182701.446[I think Kurtz is messing with Lawrence’s head here.. ahhhh one baddie being nasty to another? I have no sympathy for Lawrence!]
…Dump the bodies in Maryland and let the cops scratch their heads.
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_182935.525(Kurtz holds his hand out to Lawrence for him to give him back the dart)
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_183315.083[ lol.. shame Lawrence didn’t stick him with it!]
(Lawrence hands it back very carefully.. and Kurtz has a chuckle to himself)
[It’s almost like this is a little power play here.. Kurtz is the dominant and Lawrence is the submissive.. and he’s just been reminded of that.. i. e. when it comes to violence, Lawrence is probably a bit of a wimp. -Amanda can take him!!!! – keep in mind please, I have not watched ahead and have no idea what happens so if I sound silly that’s why ha! Smile]

Cut to the Agency.. Lee has just arrived at Billy’s office and is filling him in on where things are up to.
Lee: I spent half the night staked out a North’s place…nothing…
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_183345.359
[rofl!!! that’s hilarious!!! In the last scene with Amanda, Leee said he wanted to stake out Lawrence’s place because “he’s the key to this”! You forget that scarecrow?!]Oopsie..]
…So I went to pick up Amanda, she was gone so I figured she came here.
Billy: You don’t suppose she went out to look for them on her own?
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_183830. 90
Lee: Nah, she knows better than that-

SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_183831.692(Lee stops short thinking to himself)
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_183957. 3
Damn, I hope she didn’t!…
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_183958.813
….With her luck she’d probably find them!

SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_184048.456
Good call!!!! Ahhh SMK this is genius! I love it when SMK has a laugh at itself Smile It deserves it Winking smile tee hee..
Such an understated little moment.. but huge for fans who know the show well huh!!!

There’s a knock at the door..
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_184212.762
Billy: Come in.
We see Francine in THAT sweater enter, followed by the message taking agent..

Francine
introduces her: Officer Harmon….
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_184241.434
[Harmon?? is that a pun?? cos she was ‘Harmon’ the chance of rescue for Amanda, Dotty and Zernoff??!! And why is she ‘officer’ she has an agency ID.. do Military get agency ID’s? and if she’s military why is she not in uniform?! ]
(to Harmon) …Go ahead, tell them.
Harmon: Well a message came in for Mr. Stetson early this morning from Amanda?
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_184754.318
Lee: Why didn’t you tell me??
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_184755.119
Harmon:
Well, I am. It wasn’t a priority.
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_184757.125
Lee:
‘Amanda’ is a clearance code all its own…1love eyesSCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_184759.258

[I’m sorry.. where was I? feeling very light headed here]
…Any more calls like this you handle Priority One understood?
[Pha! I’m surprised Lee lets her continue to answer phones! she’s a menace to Amanda! get her out of here! rofl.. I’m kidding!! Winking smile But.. I am wondering where Jill has gone, it’s been a while.. she never would have done that to Amanda! Smile ]
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_184801.527
[I like to watch this dialogue of Lee’s being delivered three times.. once watching Lee.. once watching Francine and once watching Billy!]
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_184801.527
Billy seems to have a bit of a ‘Hmm! this is very interesting!!!’ kind of reaction to this line of Lee’s.. While Francine looks at Billy with a bit of an ‘ugh’ attitude..
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_184802.460
I’m not sure if this is – ‘Amanda is priority 1? Ugh!!’
or.. ‘I can’t believe she didn’t pass on this message Ugh!!’
I use to think the former, but now I lean toward the latter – because Francine had already identified that Lee would really really want this information.. and that this was a mistake.. What do you think?
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_184802.595
Then again, maybe her ugh is in reaction to Billy’s taking note and enjoying this little moment of declaration from Lee here..
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_184803.260
Yeah.. I think that can work..
Umm what do you guys think?
Harmon: Yes Sir.
Harmon is suitably chastened at not knowing of the existence of the word which equals priority one: ‘Amanda’!
[I’d like to say ‘no Harmon done’ Harmon.. but that may not be true!!]
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_184804.329
Harmon exits.. and Lee hands Billy the message.
Billy: Mr. Marshmallow.
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_184805.934
Francine: I don’t know about that part but in reference to the warehouse I know that Aero North has a warehouse in Alexandria. They store old equipment there.
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_190235.252[I think it says something that Francine has already looked into this.. she knew if it was Amanda, to look into it – no matter how ridiculous the message – that’s interesting!!! why do you think that is?]
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_190235.551
Oh my.. intense Lee.. hands on his hips.. wearing jeans..swoon emoticon
I’m sorry was someone just saying something??!!!!
swoon emoticon

swoon emoticonHang on… I think Billy said something blah blah rah rah..
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150802_190431. 35
head slap emoticon I’ll rewind it..
Oh yeah, Billy said:
And if I’m not mistaken the North-eastern Candy Company makes Mr. Marshmallow in Alexandria!…
[Billy knows this?!]
…Let’s go!
They all head for the door in a hurry.. on to Alexandria!

I best pause here for the moment everyone – can’t wait to hear from ya!!!! Thanks for stopping by and reading..byeee for now!

  1. Sigh…..‘Amanda’ is a clearance code all its own…

And on a random note, isn’t Kurtz the name Alexi gives to the security guard when he goes to kill Dart in Stemwinder 1? I remember his accent when speaking that name because both his accent and the name “Kurtz” seemed odd to me.

Also, I like to think Officer Harmon and June from YODT (that dropped the shadow file which led Sylvia to taking Amanda’s identity and everyone thinking she was dead)….those two gals have desks next to each other somewhere out there in the SMK universe….

    1. waaahhhaaaaa!!! June and Officer Harmon are very dangerous indeed!
I am loving all your responses you’ve been sharing Amandarambler! I’m sorry I don’t get to reply to them all. but please know that I love to hear from you, and am so glad you are with us and enjoying the walk!

  2. So much goodness in this episode snippet — I absolutely adored Zernoff’s “I think she’s overwhelmed”, Lee’s “With her luck she’d probably find them.” (gentle SMK poking fun at it’s self), Francine marching Agent Harmon in – Francine is not going to be Amanda’s BFF but will knows and will admit in front of others that Amanda is making an important contribution to the Agency, and of course the ‘Amanda’ is a clearance code all its own…”. Wowsers!
(And I always attributed Francine’s disgusted look about Officer Harmon who took it upon herself to decide which messages were important enough to pass on. In my head cannon, Harmon quickly gets demoted to cafeteria duty because a) she made the blunder of not passing Amanda’s message on adn b) was too stupid to figure out that Francine dragging her into Billy’s office meant she was in big trouble and answered with “Well, I am. It wasn’t a priority” instead of going into serious damage control mode

    1. Agree!!! such a hilarious little moment – genius!! for me that humour was a real highlight of the episode!

Oh yeah.. true.. Harmon seems to be lacking in perceptive skills there!! lol..

  3. The reactions of Zernoff and Dotty as they watch Amanda are priceless. Amanda is so focused on the task at hand that she doesn’t even notice their confusion. Here again she’s being a total professional.

The baddies are so getting on my nerves. At this point they really are not thinking at all. They already know that agents have shown up at North’s house and Amanda’s arrival should tell them the noose is getting tighter, so let’s now add murder to the mix. Really?

Lee has been so phenomenal through all of this. He knows Amanda’s capabilities and that Amanda would most definitely find her mother if she went off in search of her. I love the swoon-thuds about Lee’s comment that Amanda is her own clearance code. Along with Lee, Billy and Francine have seen exactly what can happen when Amanda is in the mix and if she calls something in they need to jump on it right away. That Harmon needs to be answering phones in Siberia.

Love that Francine is the one who marched this woman into the office to explain her lack of responding in a timely fashion.

    Whew!! I’m all caught up.

    1. Especially love how you describe Zernoff and Dotty and their reaction to Amanda. I can’t help thinking that Amanda has given her mother a lot of food for thought about what Amanda actually does with her time. It will be interesting to watch and see if their relationship changes at all in the rest of the series from this point on.

  4. I think my fellow colleagues in the U.S. must be on vacation for there to be so few comments by now??? So I will jump in and say that I like to think that Francine’s “ugh” look is ’cause she knew right away that Amanda’s call would be important to Lee and that’s why she looked into it herself and marched “Officer Harmon” into Billy’s office like a teacher would escort the offending student into the principal’s office. Makes me want to cheer for Francine in spite of what she’s wearing. Interestingly enough, Petra’s site lists Elisabeth Harmon-Haid as playing “Elizabeth Harmon.”

    1. I think you’re right about Francine’s reaction. She’s known Amanda long enough to know that Amanda wouldn’t leave a message like that if it wasn’t something urgent, no matter how strange it sounds, and that Amanda could be in deep trouble. She may not always approve of the things Amanda does or the attention that she gets from Lee, but she understands the situation much better than Officer Harmon and wouldn’t want to see something bad happen to Amanda because Harmon didn’t know enough to pass on the message.

    2. Yah, totally agree. This is season three, after all, not season one. Francine’s known Amanda for a while and – like it or not, by now she’s learned that Amanda wouldn’t call the Agency for no reason – or leave a strange message like that. She’s probably also schooled enough in “Amanda-speak” by now to realize this is important.

      Liked by 3 people

    3. I agree about Francine’s reaction. When she brings Harmon into Billy’s office, she really is like a teacher with a student — or like a mother who is bringing her child over to confess a broken window to the neighbor: “Now, tell them what you did. And say you’re sorry!” Francine at least gives Amanda the credit for always getting into something big, although I doubt that she yet gives her credit for getting out of it.

I get such a kick out of the way that Lee tells this Agency newbie that “Amanda” is a clearance code. It’s probably much simpler to explain that way, but maybe due for causing some confusion later. But can you imagine him trying to explain the real scenario? “Amanda is this sort of unofficial agent, no badge, no clearance code, but she’s just so important that anything from her has to be treated like it’s priority one”. No, much, MUCH simpler to just make newbie Harmon think she totally overlooked a terribly important section in the Agency handbook. And probably more effective as well.

    4. Hi Ruth, great to hear from you!! Ahh yes I think you are right.. most people who stop by JWWM are on summer holidays now, out of their usual routines, and probably outdoors and enjoying life!

JWWM will be here when they get back 🙂 or.. at least.. I hope that’s why it’s been less busy! lol!!! 🙂

Oh cool – thanks for sharing Harmon’s real name.. hmm director’s daughter or something maybe?

So no one is thinking Francine’s ugh look is in response to Billy’s reactions?

I’ve been rather busy the last few days -sorry next post will be another day coming at least..

Has anyone shared what they make of Billy’s reactions throughout this scene?? What’s he responding to?

Hope you are all well and enjoying the summer, and for us folks in the southern hemisphere – hope you are enjoying having numb feet ha! I’m starting to get to the ‘bring on spring’ point! Iwsod has an ‘ugh’ look! 😉

      1. I think Francine’s really “ugh” about the whole situation:

Amanda’s roundabout logic and Amanda-speak messages that would only really make sense to someone who understands her and how she thinks (most likely Lee these days, although he often needs translations too)

The fact that Officer Harmon seems to be completely unaware of Amanda’s unusual habits and association with Lee although she probably has kind of a reputation at the Agency by now

The fact that Officer Harmon took it upon herself to decide that a message wasn’t important just because it sounded strange to her when Lee’s been waiting all morning for a message that already arrived

Amanda’s tendency to rush out and get herself into trouble (which is the whole reason that she needs to be a high priority)

And possibly that Billy seems to find this kind of amusing although Francine is probably wondering if she’s the only sane professional in this outfit 😉

        1. Hi Jestress, yeah I can see the ugh look as being about a number of things.. I’m tossing around in my thoughts how this fits with FFFT and her Amanda/Lee issues in that one..
wondering how these best fit and why.. what’s going on with Francine over these two eps..

Yes interesting point about Amanda rushing out and getting into trouble – especially given Lee just said that line about how with her luck she’d probably find them, and Francine didn’t hear that! I wonder what her reaction would have been if she had??!!

I just had a thought, If this was season 1 -Mr Marshmallow would have been made a joke out of – Officer Harmon would have been trying to track down agent Mr Marshmallow! (Clearly a trained killer!)Or.. what the code ‘Mr Marshmallow’ means! What is it code for ? whooooo this must be top secret stuff!!! 😉

Remember how smk use to poke fun at how normal words in the spy biz have a different meaning? and then.. sometimes it would turn this around back at Amanda as a joke – that no it really was being used in a normal way. Remember in Double Agent:
Lee: I need a safe house for Magda, the one we had arranged was burned.
Amanda: somebody find out about it?
Lee: No, I mean burned.. down!…. faulty wiring or something!

If you want to see this exchange it’s HERE

The spy biz is a strange business full of strange people 😉 and it makes for great gags..
Here alas.. Mr Marshmallow is being used as a plot device rather than a gag I guess.. ahh I miss season 1 gags!
Then again, since I got the line: ‘Amanda’ is a clearance code all its own…
I can’t complain really! haaa.. In season 1 I was dreaming about Lee saying such a thing! 🙂 and in front of Billy and Francine no less!!!

Oh dear.. I’ve gone off on an smk diversion here.. I better get on with my day here.
I’m aiming to carve out some smk time tonight and reward myself for getting everything I need done today! byeeee everyone!

      2. I think Billy is concerned about Amanda’s welfare, but he also gets this kind of amused/pleased look when Lee says that that Amanda is priority one. I think he’s pleased that Lee takes Amanda seriously. By now, he’s completely accepted her as his partner and knows that anything she says is serious even if it doesn’t make sense right away, which is quite a difference from when they started working together. I think Billy sometimes congratulates himself on putting this unlikely partnership together and that it seems to be working. Also, he doesn’t have to bawl out Harmon for her mistake because Lee’s already done that. 😉

        Liked by 2 people

        1. Hear, hear, Jestress, I just logged on intending to say the same thing but you stated my position perfectly. And I did not think of Billy’s added bonus of not having to bawl Harmon out–touché!

      3. Well, first of all, I love Happycamper’s take on the missed section of the Agency handbook; the Amanda chapter.

I agree that Francine’s initial attitude is about how terribly Harmon handled the message, but I do think her expression in that last screen cap was more of a reaction to Lee’s delivery and Billy’s reaction. I think Lee had a bit too much personal response in his delivery and I think Billy and Francine noticed it. I think Billy has had a eyeful of a new realilty in Lee and Amanda’s relationship over the past two days. This is another reason I would put this before FFFT and his comment to Lee about where his priorities lie in that episode. I don’t think Billy thinks Lee has lost his objectivity all together, but I do think he can see that at times Lee begins to teeter on the edge. I don’t think Francine has as clear a picture, but she is beginning to get that she and Lee aren’t in Kansas anymore.

  5. Hmmm, not sure about Francine and her ugh. Might be a bit of both – “ugh why is Lee so invested in Amanda?”, and “ugh newbie Harmon you are never going to make it in this business”, and maybe even a bit of “ugh Billy, notice how professional I am next to these two!”

  6. Of course Billy knows “the North-eastern Candy Company makes Mr. Marshmallow in Alexandria!” Billy’s got the waistline of a candy connoisseur. 😀
I don’t find Francine’s jersey completely heinous but those colours are no good on her at all. The brooch and the earrings don’t help.
We’ll let her off with a warning this time. 😎

    1. Yeah, Billy’s a total sweet tooth! 😀

Didn’t he have a big jar of jelly beans on his desk in the first episode? He also ate Lee’s chocolates when he was in the hospital during the Lester the Duck episode. It cracks me up every time I see it. 😀

  7. I see the Marshmallow Man is now Mr Marshmallow – even to Amanda and Dotty 😀 And am loving “take charge” Amanda checking out the exit options.

Love this little scene with Billy, Lee, Francine and Phone Lady Harm(on). That comment on Amanda and her luck cracks me up every time. Agree, iwsod, that it is truly a brilliant moment for every SMK fangirl. Then Lee is so swoony and intense – not a hint of annoyance at Amanda, just concern about her whereabouts.

Francine has worn some weird outfits and horrific accessories in her time. She wears colours that no-one out of the 80s would be caught dead in. But this jumper is the most unflattering set of colours on her in the entire series so far !!
