5/13 Season Three, Episode 14: Playing for Keeps-Scarecrow and Mrs King

So Amanda is home sick on the couch.. and Tina is playing her exhibition game, with Francine watching on..
PFK.avi_20150823_140600.733
Lee is looking out over the tennis match and we hear a woman behind him say: Could you make it out to Steve? That’d be great. Thank you.
We see a group of fans surrounding a tennis player.. Whooo that fan has a visor like Amanda’s in Magic bus! Smile
The tennis player turns and notices Lee – ahhhh this is Tracy Austin huh..
PFK.avi_20150823_140604.336
She approaches Lee..
Tracy Austin: Lee!!
(We see Lee turn around a bit confused at who could be calling him)
PFK.avi_20150823_140609.741
[wishing it was Amanda Lee? He looks a little lost here! Ugh I really don’t like it when the back of Lee’s hair flaps in the wind: screams Mullet and me no like- sorry mullet fans! each to their own!]
…Lee Gorvandeljec! It’s Tracy, Tracy Austin. Hungarian Invitational – 1979. The dancing?!
PFK.avi_20150823_140616. 45
[I love how she’s a famous tennis player but she still feels the need to remind Lee Gorvandeljec of her full name and who she is Smile )] I’m going to assume there was some Hungarians dancing the national dance – Lee was not doing any dancing with Tracy!
BTW- I say Kudos to Tracy Austin – I think she does a fabulous job here!!! She delivers her dialogue very fast.. and doesn’t overdo it.. for a celebrity cameo – I think she rocks it!!
Lee (in Russian-ish accent): Oh, Miss Tracy. How niiiiiice,…
PFK.avi_20150823_140619.652
…how nice.
PFK.avi_20150823_140620.552
[I see where Borat got his inspiration for his accent!…not! Winking smile]
Tracy Austin: Your English has really improved.
Lee: Oh well, English is not my act.
PFK.avi_20150823_140624.157
(I’m wondering if he says ‘my hat’? Kiwismh has heard ‘my act’ ?? what do you all hear?)
Tracy Austin: Last time I saw you, you shoved the Italian ambassador into a car, and there was all this smoke, people were shouting—
PFK.avi_20150823_140626.860[this is a lot of lines for a celebrity… she does a great job!]
Lee: Oh,..
PFK.avi_20150831_213718.062
…oh, yes, yes.
[Lee looks to have drawn a blank here!! and.. has lost his accent.. ]
PFK.avi_20150831_213722.905
Tracy Austin: I never found out what that was all about.
PFK.avi_20150831_213903.332
lol Lee still seems to be drawing a blank..
PFK.avi_20150831_213949.864
Lee: My vife! ha haaaa..
PFK.avi_20150831_213950.262
[vife.. wife..  rofl! Falcon Ving lives again!! He seems to just blurt out a nonsensical reference here – we could have some fun with why ‘my wife’ came to Lee’s mind Smile Missing Amanda??? Winking smile ]
…Nice to see you.
PFK.avi_20150831_213951. 64
Lee takes Tracy’s hand again..
PFK.avi_20150831_214236.944
Tracy Austin: Bye.
Lee: Goodbye.
Lee walks off.. quickly..
PFK.avi_20150831_214238.547
As he walks off he seems to be thinking oh man…
He’s not happy, he seems off balance to me.. Is this just me reading into things or is he actually off balance? I really don’t know what’s ahead in this ep!!

When you read this post in a few years time- forgive me if I sound dim.. and err just keep in mind that I have zero idea what’s ahead nowadays and sooo I may even type stuff and change my mind as the episode unfolds!!
It’s all about the journey Smile [and not about iwsod looking like she knows what she’s talking about- haaaa]
If you walk with me, I may lead you down the garden path haaaaa.. but eventually someone will lead us back to the main road Smile tee hee..
PFK.avi_20150831_214239.345
It all seemed a bit much for Lee.. what’s going on with Lee?! He  seems a bit over all the lying here..

Plus here is Lee’s 6th name in this episode so far! Lee, Mr Simpson, Lee Stanton, Henderson, Bernie Gold and now Lee Gorvandeljec! So many names..  So many lies.. so many cover stories.. and now we have a previous name and cover story coming back to Lee!!! This seems too over the top to be meaningless.. 6 names and we are only 15 minutes into the episode!
I’m not sure what it means, what the writers are wanting to do here – what story they are wanting to tell… any ideas? For now.. I’m just going to note it.. and keep it in mind as the story unfolds.. 6 names.. that’s got to be some kind of a record!

Oh and what of this little snippet about a previous incident? great writing.. tells us so much with not much – sounds like Lee was working in Hungary at a tennis invitational and protecting an Italian ambassador and there was some kind of attempt? or.. maybe Lee kidnapped him or her.. lol..

Moving on, back to Tina’s tennis match.. her opponent Mary is struggling and takes another drinks break.. it seems apparent to everyone something’s not right.
Francine: What’s wrong?
PFK.avi_20150823_140718.210
[funny, Francine looks like an agent not a gushing fan when she asks this]
Tina: I don’t know. She looks real pale. I told her I’d quit but she won’t leave the court.
Mary
is stubbornly refusing to stop playing.. and calls to Tina:
Let’s play.
PFK.avi_20150823_140722.710
Tina and Francine share a ‘she’s nuts but what can I do’ look and the players head back to the court..
PFK.avi_20150823_140725.417
Cue the thinking music.. I think.. Francine’s thinking! lol..
PFK.avi_20150823_140731.724
We head out to the car park to find Lee is in his car checking up on the intel.
Whahahaahaa!!! Ohhh this is too funny!!!
PFK.avi_20150823_140737.126
As the camera pans closer to Lee he seems to look around to make sure he’s not being watched..
PFK.avi_20150823_140738.930
We hear typing.. and in the car we see a massive computer sitting next to Lee on the passenger seat! whahahaahaa!!!
PFK.avi_20150823_140748.842
[Oh someone has to do a meme of this!! Smile ]
Nothing suspicious here!!! You’d think he’d be on a chunky laptop like Cyclops Daisy had! .. and did the agency have internet in 1986? Maybe they did.. they would have had it before your every day citizen.. I mean how is he connected to the agency from his car? dunno..
Lee’s checking up on who’s staying at the hotel.

PFK.avi_20150823_140752.444
Lee hits paydirt..
He checks again to make sure no one is noticing his massive computer passenger!
PFK.avi_20150823_140756. 49
Oh this is priceless.. No wonder Amanda couldn’t come with him on this case.. she couldn’t sit in the passenger seat Smile tee hee.. This is the smk version of Kitt !!
KittyPunch5Let’s call it.. Kitt-en! whahahaahaahaa!!!
rofl emoticon

The scene ends here.. so I shall too.. whahahaaa.. sorry this computer has made me lose it.. such top technology – even for the time! 😉 .. this is hilarious!! Any thoughts on this part of the episode or the episode so far? Do tell! So anyone else enjoying this episode more than they thought they would? I am!!! I’m enjoying watching Lee Smile byeee!

  1. Loved seeing Tracy Austin. I read her memoir and she seems like a really nice person.

I think Lee forgot his cover from that case (understandable with all his years on the job) and was caught off guard. And then it’s like “Oh crap — I never thought I’d run into her again — how do I explain that one?”

I love the way Tracy screws up her face after their conversation here too like she thinks he’s nuts. And his accent is so adorable.

  2. That computer in Lee’s car is killing me. It’s just so ridiculously huge.

I think the backdrop of a tennis tournament and the title of this episode all speak to what’s going on with Lee, with Francine, and with Amanda. There is a lot of back and forth going on and everything is somewhat up in the air. There has been volleying back and forth, Francine has tossed up a few lobs, and both Amanda and Francine have served some aces to and about each other here and there. Lee is acting like he’s sort of been batted back and forth and wants to end the games. And of course, we know the score always starts with “love”. Just having a bit of fun.

I did think that Tracy Austin did do a pretty good acting job here.

    1. Great to see you back, Valerie! Loved all your tennis puns. So Lee is the ball?? I tend to think that Francine won a few of the early games, maybe even the first set, but Amanda looks to be on track to win the match and take home the trophy 🙂 (In Learjet-land, Lee is the trophy)

  3. I hear hat. The closed captioning on Amazon Prime also heard hat. Not that that matters 😉

I do love that “my vife” line! Yup, Tatiana Federovna Romarcheva lives on!

Yes, iwsod, I think Lee is definitely off balance here!! I said something like that in my comment on the prior post. I wonder if all the names are reminders of his past – and he’s here for a weekender with a pretty woman who he’s played backgammon with before and who’d probably succumb to his charms again just to spite Amanda. I think it was kiwismh who said it earlier – a real test to Lee’s character? Or maybe just to show the viewers how much he’s changed? Or for Lee to see himself how much he’s changed?

Maybe there’s a portable satellite dish on top of the ‘vette.

    1. Love this!!! 🙂
I’m leaning toward this ep showing Lee how much he’s changed..
but can’t say more on that till the end!
And.. I think Francine will have the chance to see he has changed from this ep’s events.. but will she see it?! tee hee..
There’s a difference between having the chance to see something and actually seeing it 😉 but.. we’ll ‘see’! teehee

  4. I’m going on record that between Lee’s polyester suit, his painful phony-baloney act for Tisher, and the goofy accent and alibi used for Tracy Austin, this is a very difficult episode for GOLD (Guardian of Lee’s Dignity) club members!

I agree with you, Iwsod — Tracy Austin did a nice job here. If memory serves me correctly, she was a wholesome celebrity throughout her career which makes it especially nice to see her here on SMK.

    1. Hooray!!! raffie’s back! 🙂 missed ya!

you know Raffie you’re right! GOLDs should have issues with that scene.. tee hee.. I didn’t!!! It’s only now though that I realise – it’s because I was focusing on Tisher and finding him funny 🙂 lol.. now that’s a defence mechanism I’ve used.. and the ‘rockin and rollin’ reference well.. it made me blank! tee hee..

Yeah! go Tracy good for her! Hope she googles herself and finds us chatting about her haaaaa..

      1. I’ll have to remember that technique for cringe-worthy moments!! Refocus, even if the alternate face is not nearly as attractive (sorry Tisher). You are right, Iwsod — Tisher was pretty funny with his expressions!

    2. Agree fully with your GOLD comment! Somehow he does manage to transcend this culmination of awful kitsh (is that the word\/). Not many would. He is a very talented man!
I also agree with ISWOD and you about Tracy Austin, she is unusually natural and indeed humble for a celebrity. (How big a celebrity was she in the 1980’s?)

      Like

      1. I don’t remember her being a particularly big celebrity past the early 80’s. She was very popular in the 70’s because she was so young. I want to say she was 14 or thereabouts when I first saw her in competition and she wore her hair in low pigtails (or whatever you call 2 ponytails, one to each side) which added to the youthful image, not necessarily deliberately as far as I could tell. She was very cute. I remember seeing a cartoon once of her playing tennis while holding a teddy bear. Nowadays with the Williams sisters having been in the public eye since age 12 and earlier, we’re a bit jaded, but back in the 70’s, having such a young competitor was unique, and she was well-spoken and sweet.

  5. “act” or “hat” – I don’t know. I don’t “speak American” 😉 and it’s sometimes hard to figure out what Americans are saying sometimes.
Guess I’d better not go to the US, since I only speak English. 😀

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Oh, ouch. As for “speaking American,” it does sound like Lee said “hat”, but I’ve never heard that expression before. Neither have I heard “up to my keister in alligators”.

      Like

      1. This comment popped into my head today, I’ve been meaning to come back to this.
I was thinking that ‘hat’ was not an expression, and this was suppose to be foreign Lee demonstrating his lousy English.. You know.. English is not his hat 😉

And lol yes I haven’t heard the alligator one either .. but I figured “I’m up to my Keister in_____” was a fill in the blanks type of phrase..
I’m up to my Keister in trouble.. or.. wait a minute isn’t ‘Keister’ short for the errr buttocks?! Lee is talking about his buttocks? gahobauba’bhalhnablsbua0ahbaehnan..

  6. “what’s going on with Lee?! He seems a bit over all the lying here..”

I think he’s over his past of putting on a front for women. Granted, it sounds like that was work-related… having to do with the Italian ambassador, etc., but I don’t think he likes the reminder of his womanizing past — his Lee Stetson playboy image. He obviously has to lie, and keep up a cover, for the job — but now regrets the covers he’s used in his personal life.

Maybe? I dunno. Others are better at getting in his head than I am. 😀

    1. And I always wondered why would Lee be sent to a tennis match when he was already well known among the tennis elite? Wouldn’t that have been a good excuse for him to get out of the assignment back in Billy’s office?

    2. Since his phone call to Amanda, I feel like Lee has been constantly pummelled with reminders about how wrong his life before her had been, and how much he needs her in his life.
Like someone who is taking a pummelling, he is reeling and this has affected his confidence and abilities somewhat so far.
He needs to find his centre again – perhaps a phone call to or from Amanda might help?

      1. I think it’s because she’s wearing so much less make-up and isn’t wearing stiff, formal clothing. Even her hair lots more natural.

        Like

        1. It’s funny, last night I was flipping back and forth between this one and FFFT last night. I’d scroll through this one to read the comments and she looks so natural, but that red dress and make-up she wore to impress Cecil Bendix was over the top. Scary even.

  7. Haha… That computer is hilarious. 😀 Dial-up wasn’t out until 1990s. Maybe he plugged it into his car phone like dial-up? (lol) Not only that, whatever he needed popped right up more like high-speed. Couldn’t he call the agency on his car phone and have someone do a check for him? Why lug around a huge computer?

Yes, his comment to Tracy “my wife” meant he was missing his (office) wife. 😉

    Liked by 1 person

      1. Yeah, I’ve heard the term ‘office wife’ or ‘office husband’ used on other shows and taken that to mean the person you spend more time with than your own spouse or anyone significant for that matter. Then of course, all of this goes along with the two acting like an old married couple, which they absolutely do! I had a different TV couple on the brain too and that’s probably why this slipped out. Fortunately for Lee and Amanda, they got further along than my other sunken ships.

    1. The “wife” comment is what I notice most. Is that like the “goodbye Darling” in FFFT? The title of the episode is “Playing for Keeps” and the cover that pops into Lee’s head after Tracy’s comment was that the commotion had something to do with his wife? Lee is thinking wife on the spot? And Francine had told the two ladies in the lobby that Lee had been hitting on every woman in the lobby that day. I notice the difference in the way they are using cover stories. Hmmm? lovely ideas to play with 😉

      Liked by 1 person

      1. The very first time I watched this, I honestly thought he said “life” instead of “wife.” Maybe it was the accent? My preteen mind hadn’t grasped the concept of Lee thinking about Amanda in that way, and that comment having slipped from his mouth. Now as I’m following The Walk, I would agree that his mind and heart were in this transitioning phase and he’s trying to decide what he and Amanda were to each other. Thinking on the spot (in his response to Tracy) meant there were a lot of thoughts stirring around in his mind. He could have blurted out anything. It’s interesting what he chose.

Not sure why this jumped out at me, but I recently went through the FFFT walk and thought I remembered reading that someone said “playing for keeps” in that episode too. Could have been the baddies (?), but I love thinking of it as symbolic to L&A. Such a specific catch phrase for the writers to slip in. I’ll have to search for that again.

I can make this right by imagining that, like space agencies, spy agencies have access to the latest technology long before the general public do.

        1. howdy! Yeah we saw Daisy cyclops lady had a laptop at the end of Reach for the sky.
I was thinking maybe this is a laptop, but the keyboard being up like that means it’s separate.. that’s what threw me.
Then I though – maybe they’ve given more BB a separate keyboard, not connected at all, just so we can see him typing..

oh dear.. what will the GOLD make of this?! 🙂

      2. I’m wondering if that’s just some archived DOS database he’s searching rather than something he’s networked into…? Also wondering if he’s powering it from the cigarette lighter (lol). I worked for the federal government in the late 1980s-early 1990s(not a big agency) and I’m sort of remembering now that not all the VIPs had dial-up.

I just had this image of Lee checking email from the corvette… We hear the squelch sound and “You’ve got mail,” while he searches eagerly to see if Amanda wrote him. 😉 Too silly? Sorry, it’s still early here and the caffeine’s already kicked in.

    2. SMK facts of life: The stuff you’re looking for on a computer always comes up as fast – or slow – as the script requires it to come up. Just like all those highly-trained top spies never seem to actually hit anyone when shooting – except when the script asks for it. 😉
