I’m not seeing this.. Lee seems to brush off Lance like he doesn’t care – with IMHO no hint that he’s covering his tracks. It’s more like Lance wishes Lee would be his wingman and that they’d be a great team picking up women.. rather than these two actually be peers. Yeah, I think Lance is a source. An asset that Lee keeps happy and humours.. but he isn’t Lee’s friend. what do you think?
Plus I’ll just add that Lance sounds more like a predator than a player.. this whole hacking info about women thing is creepy. Lance, you’re not charming me!!! Maybe in the 80’s this was accepted as funny?? anyone??

[Love the sideways glance Amanda gives Lee here – She doesn’t have to say a word – Lee ‘knows what she’s thinking!’
Maybe: my my.. this is quite a ‘friend’ you’ve got here!! not!.. Okay. here Lee squirms a little! Lee never did like Amanda having any contact with Auggie.. I guess with Lance he thought she had to come?]

Lance gets up – lol that massive thing really is a laptop! tee hee.. He opens the trailer door and ushers Amanda and Lee in.
Lee gives Lance a little smile as he heads into the trailer.

Once their inside Lance opens his fridge..
Lance: How about a cold brewster?

Lee: Ah, no, thanks, Lance.

Lance: I’ve got storage space for every dating service on the Eastern Seaboard…
[He really has no filter on that mouth of his. But he seems to be able to talk to women okay so he’s not the computer guy stereotype of the 80’s no? Sounds like he has hacked the dating services too huh.. and is gathering private information about women.. ewww just… ewwww.. ]

Lance: Here we go. Your wages were paid to somebody code-named King… [does this mean Amanda gets paid $297.91 umm a week or fortnight?! Oh and hey the date on the cheque was January 1986… this computer says it was 6th of February 1986.. hmm!]
[the assassin truck driver dude? is Code named King? I knew it.. this is all Joe King’s fault!!! err.. Joeking!!]
….and the cheque was mailed to a bank in the Bahamas. You got his money…
…And this is weird. It was drawn on a non-existent account.
Lee: Any idea how or why?
Lance: Somebody made a data entry error or something. Let me play around with it.
Lee: OK, tell you what, you got a pencil? Here. If you find something, call this number…
…OK, thanks a lot, Lance.
Lance keeps his eyes on his computer while Lee goes to leave..but Amanda is on the ball – and wants her cheque back! Lance smiles.. I think he was trying to hang on to it 
Lance: Sure.
Amanda: Oh, ah…
…I, kind of…
Lee: Oh, yeah, we-
Amanda: … my cheque.
Lee: We better hold on to that.
Amanda: The cheque, please. Yeah.
Lance:Hasta la bye-bye.
Amanda: Thank you. Thank you.
Lee : I trust you, really.
[lol now that sounds like a line you would give an asset no?!

Lee and Amanda exit the trailer and start walking away from it. Amanda: That doesn’t seem very secure.
Lee: Welcome to the future. It’s all in the passwords and security codes.
[SMK sees the future!!! whooooo!!]
Amanda: Hmm. Do you really think he’ll be able to trace the cheque?

It’s too funny how Amanda says this!
I guess this means Lee thinks Lance is more or less harmless, or.. knowing she knows Lee is enough protection.. or.. whatever Lance throws at her Lee thinks she can handle it.
Now I think about it. Auggie called Amanda at home once too! [In double agent] rofl!
I can see how valuable Lance and his skills would be.. but the thought of him accessing all the information of those women and the dating services is ick.. and someone should be looking out for their privacy and their rights too. I’ll comfort myself that maybe Lance is all talk. Hmmmm.. thoughts everyone?? do tell!!! can’t wait to hear from you!!!!!

I definitely don’t see Lee as a Lance. I get the feeling he always treated women with respect–he just wasn’t into commitments. But we see him holding doors for Francine as early as Ep 2, we saw how he was trying to impress Randi Baby by being romantic, he really works hard to be honorable despite the temptations with Eva, etc. Even in the cut scene from The Mole he is quick to point out “I didn’t know she was married.” I can’t see him trying to track down women behind their backs unless it was job related and that’s different.
And I don’t see them as socializing friends. I think Lee would keep up a level of banter to get his source info but more undercover than any. Like you said, he’s Auggie with a brain and Lee wouldn’t call Auggie a friend.
For me I don’t mind the humor with Lance because it’s not implied he takes the creepy part past looking them up. (If he did I think Lee would have hauled him into jail whether he was an informant or not). And they aren’t trying to make him a good main character we’re supposed to root for. He’s supposed to be shady and unethical. It’s like we find Zinoviev amusing and charming as a villain when he was technically making light of killing people! But if they wrote Billy like that it would be a whole other story.

I can remember being quite shocked and repulsed by Lance’s pervy activities when I rewatched this episode a few years ago (I actually remember watching the episode back in the 80’s but had no recollection of Lance) – despite this, I do like him (I think a lot of his comments were more bravado and trying to show he was a ‘player’ – I am hope I am right about that!)
I also like the nerd in the trailer park thing – I’ don’t know if this is the first time this troupe (if that’s the right word) is used but it must be fairly early on. I know there were some nerdy films in the 80’s but I think it came more widespread in the 90’s. I am no film buff and maybe ‘Hackers’ was an 80’s film. I can remember the nerd in the trailer park in an x files episode and in Chuck (kind of) as well. It would be nice to think that SMK was the first.
Other than that, Lee and Amanda are pretty sweet here. I like the way Lee is a bit embarrassed by his friend and is not descending to his level at all, (not that I think Lee would ever have had anything in common with Lance but he might have gone along with some of his rubbish out of politeness). I do think that Lance is a bit more of a friend than Auggie. He is very bright (probably a genius) and on the ‘right’ side while Auggie was neither.

Hi Michele – I loved your use of ‘pervy’ for me that was spot on!
I hadn’t paid any attention to Lance until this time watching.. and having the dialogue in front of me and actually paying attention to it (rather than just drooling over Lee like usual) left me with a very different view of the Lance character!
Hackers? that does sounds a bit like Lance!
True, Auggie was a crook.. whereas Lance is well… no to me actually he is a crook too – LOL! The best I can say about Lance is that he is teetering at being on the right side.. but cyber stalking/ bragging about invading women’s privacy is not something I want to overlook.
I remember the first moment we met Auggie he was trying to molest one of his staff at his bar.. yep.. charmer.. remember that?!
I don’t find the ‘let’s mistreat women’ joke funny -don’t go for drunk jokes either! but this is because I feel very strongly about how women are treated and I really don’t expect others to share my views.. So don’t mind me 🙂
Wasn’t there an agency high up who was hitting on Francine in The Long Christmas eve or something? or have I completely misremembered?

Having re-watched this scene I still see Lance as pretty harmless. He actually reminds me of some students I’ve had. You have to wonder just what his connection is to the Agency. He is connected in some way as he works to test computer security. However, he seems more comfortable and at home in the trailer park as opposed to being in an office at the Agency. This must be acceptable to the Agency. He seems to have some social skills issues, such as no filter and staying focused on the discussion at hand. Maybe he doesn’t play well with others or doesn’t have the skills to interact well with others. Computers are his friends. Also he seems to want to impress Lee as opposed to getting Lee to hang out with him. He probably has only heard of Lee’s prior reputation and may think his trolling abilities may make him seem cool in Lee’s eyes. It’s also weird that they seem to have him using lingo from the 70s…”my main man”, “what it is”, “gig”. All that was stuff we said in the 70s. I agree that he his somewhat of a man child and fairly immature. Most likely he’s all talk and no action. Too much time spent on the computer.
He also makes me think of how Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak started Apple in a garage. Once he gets focused on Amanda’s check issue he sort of zones out. I don’t think he was trying to hold on to it. I don’t think he realized he still had it. He was too focused on trying to solve the puzzle of the check, which seems to be what challenges him, trying to solve or break puzzles and challenges, including the banana-gram. He’s a whiz at that but a failure at human interaction.

I think this is spot on, Valerie. I particularly like the points about trying to impress and having no filter. I’ve always found him innocuous (I think that’s the right word). I do love Amanda’s reaction when she hears that Lee gave Lance her phone number, lol. Clearly Lee finds Lance harmless.

I mean I know he hasn’t had a squeaky clean past.. but I draw the line at Lee stalking women. I’m sure lance was suppose to be a likeable rogue – but with today’s issues and sensibilities it’s creepy..

I can agree with lance showing off and even though I think he is off base it may highlight a bit the character that he assumes Lee has. But Lee doesn’t get on board, he doesn’t even seem too embarrassed about Lance’s banter in front of Amanda. Lee just moves on to the topic at hand. He is focused on getting Amanda’s pay situation straightened out.

More Triumvirate…the anticipation of this episode feels so good – I love that we are finally here, finally getting to the good stuff.
Lance Dorn. Where to start? He never bothered me before – I never paid him much attention – boys will be boys (think kiwismh mentioned that), but after reading many of the comments here and thinking about it, he does seem kinda creepy. But I get the distinct feeling that he is all about being able to have access rather than actually doing something. He may have front row tickets to Chaka Khan, but he’s asking Lee to go and not trying to find a ‘babe’ from a dating service or a Maryland coed. So creepy, but I get the sense that he would actually draw the line when faced with actually acting like a creepy pervert in real life. He’s all talk, no action on that front.
And I don’t think he and Lee are friends. I don’t see that even in S1 – Lance doesn’t have enough class. I like your comparison to Auggie. Lance is Auggie-like but with a brain. He is an informant. I do think Lance is on the good guy side though. Auggie was willing to get dirty. I think Lance is less willing – he’d only do it if it was via electronics where he could remain anonymous. And for a good reason – like Lee needing the information to solve a case. He’s got his own moral code – a bit like Lisbeth Salander – maybe not strictly moral as the law would see it, but a version of his own morals that work for him and the world in which he grew up.
Hahaha – Amanda is not very impressed with Lance. I think she thinks he is a boy in an adult male body. Her look to Lee says that to me. Seriously? This ‘child’ is going to be able to help me? Can you please act like the adult and make him get moving on it? I don’t want to have to act like a parent here.
One criticism – that line – This is a nice setup you have here – ugh. I hate that line. I don’t know why. Are we supposed to think that Amanda is rethinking her thoughts on Lance? I think she is just being regular, polite Amanda. But I think it’s even a bit too much, even for Amanda.
I do like Lance’s ‘Hasta la bye-bye’. I don’t know why. I sometimes say that to my kids.

I liked what you said about Lance being more about having “access” rather than really doing much with women. I think that “access” is really what his life is about, using his computer to poke into places and get information, which Lee finds useful, but which Lance wouldn’t really use himself.
When it comes to women, Lance might be the kind of guy who really likes the chase (at least in the electronic sense) more than anything else. He might enjoy the challenge of finding women but not really want to do much with them because he just wants to move on and track down more women. I once heard someone describe that type of guy as being like a dog chasing cars — they think it’s really exciting and love the thrill of the chase, but would have no idea what to do if they actually caught one.

lol – that is a funny picture, Cindy. I can’t see Lee being excited about going to see Chaka Khan with Lance. Not after he’s taken Amanda to a variety festival at the Kennedy all dressed up elegantly. I wonder if Lance and Lee have a college connection – that Lance never grew out of? Perhaps Lee and Lance were pals back in the day at one of the many universities Lee was kicked out of. The kinda look like they could be the same age – or do you think not?

Lance seems more like a Jimmy Buffett fan, IMO. Lee may have been a little like Lance once, but I think he wanted more for himself and just didn’t realize it until he met Amanda. Lance seems perfectly happy ‘as is.’ No desire to change. Sort of a shame because with a better wardrobe and some maturity, he could actually be cute.

True, accessing files is creepy behavior. I think that when this aired though, the digital world was vastly different than today’s, and when I watch this episode now, I don’t think of today, I think of the 80s. So I don’t really find it all that creepy. As a naïve, young teen, I would not have been able to envision what would really entail creepy. Plus I don’t think Amanda gets a creepy vibe from this guy, and Lee obviously doesn’t think he’s much of a threat or else he wouldn’t have given him Amanda’s phone number. I think I also want to think that Agency wouldn’t hire true creeps. 🙂

I see Lance as an asset.. working as a contractor for the agency. He isn’t actually employed by the agency. But also, I do see the agency as working with creeps from time to time as needed (Auggie was no angel.. I wonder if we see him again! don’t tell me!).. Lee has discussed getting his hands a little dirty in the past..(was that right before he went to meet Auggie?) it’s a part of justice biz.. I see keeping lance on side and humouring him as something the job required.. and I’m happy with this because I do see Lance as creepy!
but if you don’t see Lance as creepy then there’s no need to come up with an explanation for why Lance and Lee would know each other I guess. I love to hear different views and explore how it leads us down slightly different paths! 🙂

I don’t think Lee was wanting to indulge Lance with the ‘guy talk’ either. He’s grown up whereas Lance hasn’t yet. I like that Lee brushes Lance off and while it’s partially to move things along, I think he’d rather not see Amanda uncomfortable.
Yes, the portable computer is a hoot. The check read-out on DOS didn’t make sense. No taxes taken out. Even if her payout was $100,000, the gross pay would be higher. If her payout is $297, the gross pay would be something around $330? $340? (I don’t know, but it’s higher. I only took one class in Accounting and gave up). We already know something is wrong, but even this doesn’t compute to a ‘data entry error.’

Yep! the screen makes zero sense (cents?!). I think what they’ve done is insert a few numbers into some payroll software and figured we’ll only see the two numbers or something.. not that they actually don’t really mean anything!

Iwsod’s question of whether the $297 was supposed to represent a weekly or bi-weekly paycheck for Amanda started me doing some research. In 1985, minimum wage was 3.35 in the US. Assuming a 40-hour workweek (but wasn’t she part-time?) that would equal $134. I think we can also assume, however, that the government paid even their secretaries more than minimum wage. However, even double minimum wage comes in at less than 297 per week. I think it would have to be a two-week paycheck, unless we can assume that by now Amanda is working a full 40-hour week. For what it’s worth, some random internet inflation calculating site says $300 in 1985 equals $668 in today’s dollars. If that were a weekly rate, it would equal $34,736 which is about what I made last year (sorry, 2014) in a low-level management job.

It’s biweekly. Part time could be up to 35 hours a week. She’s a GS-4, which is where I was as a summer student intern in the early 1990s. About $6 – $6.50 / hour, if I remember that right (it’s sort of coming back to me). My job was far less glamorous, but it helped pay for college books.

And there seem to be women who like men like Lance. (Scary!) I like how Lee definitely isn’t that guy….any more. Yes, I think he was a better looking version of Lance once. Thank goodness for Amanda.

I have to admit that I tried to use an internet anagram solver to cheat and solve the puzzle, but onion soup was the only option they gave me that made any sense, unless you want to accept either “pious noon” or “union oops” as an option.

Actually, I’m not quite sure what the low-tech solution to the problem would be. Jumbles are easy when they use simple words that everyone knows, but what could you do when the word is something that hardly anyone would even recognize? Even if you managed to arrange letters of this problem in the right order, most people wouldn’t recognize it as the right answer because most of us have no reason to know the genus names of spiders. I know how computer programs can take a string of characters, rearrange them, and compare them to other strings, but if you didn’t have a computer program to do that, probably the only method to use would be to consider all the possible arrangements of letters and use one of those big, table-smashing, unabridged dictionaries to check them all out. Even then, what if the dictionary you used didn’t happen to include spider genuses?
Actually, I think this puzzle would have been kind of a cheat for the contestants because, technically “onion soup” is a perfectly acceptable answer. It might not be the answer they’re looking for, but it is a correct answer to the puzzle. Maybe they should write a letter or something.

Your comment about what seemed funny in the 80s reminds me of watching a rerun of a very early episode of MAS*H where Loretta Swit ends up trapped in a storage room or something with a slightly senior officer who is trying to molest her before Hawkeye arrives to break it up. The whole thing is played for huge laughs and I can remember watching it and thinking how much Alan Alda would flip out if asked to play that type of scene later in his career. We’ve come a long way, baby, indeed.

This is the sort of thing that generally passed without comment or protest in the 80’s. I wouldn’t have raised an eyebrow about it in the 80’s, but I would now. I guess women of my generation just took it on the chin to a certain extent – just boys being boys.
Given a lot of what we know happens on the internet and with technology lately, nothing really changes, it just less acceptable now.

My daughter could not believe what a ground breaking and socially progressive show MAS*H was at the time. Yes, we have come a long way in what is considered funny.

OOOPS- totally forgot to talk about this scene. facepalm I think Amanda is looking quite lovely here, but I must admit, I have never been a fan of that style of ‘peep toe’ shoe. And with nylons, no less!
