[We see a view to out on the street – looks like Jepard has found Amanda.. How exactly did he find her?! Ohh don’t tell me – he has his ways?!]

Now I think about it.. there’s lots of references to the late 1960s in this episode.. with the wet operations supposedly being closed down around then and Amanda’s reunion – why? What are the writers trying to say here?? or too soon to say?.. interesting!
Amanda: Wow.
Clerk: I got papers to prove it.  It’s you, babe. Try it on.

In walks Jepard as Amanda takes the Gracie Slick special into the change rooms..
Amanda:Thank you very much

Jepard: No, sorry, I don’t drink.
[Rofl! firstly- a baddie who doesn’t drink tea?! and Secondly – a baddie who ‘doesn’t drink’ rofl!!! that ginseng tea is strong stuff.. could tip him right off the tea wagon!]
Jepard begins to move toward the change rooms but the clerk grabs him by the arm to stop him.
Clerk: Ah, brother, you can’t go back there.

Jepard quickly pistol whips 60’s dude who cries ouch!!! and falls to the ground. Poor brother.. he thought the 60’s and tear gas was rough.. the 80’s are brutal!
I love how the mannequin behind Jepard seems to be saying – hey! that’s not cool man!!

Amanda hears and quickly opens the curtains to see what’s going on..

Speaking of the corvette.. through the shop window, we can see the Corvette screeching to a halt in front of the shop. What do you know.. right where we saw it parked in that opening shot!

Jepard opens the curtains on the lady down the end changing.. and she screams. I must say that scream is lacking some forcefulness lol!

Maybe the lack of forcefulness explains why, when Lee hears the scream he only seems to call out: Amanda?
Without any added worry or urgency? He looks more curious than anything..

Did Lee get a look at him? can he identify Jepard also? Hey.. 60’s dude can ID him also..

Lee gets up and tries to aim as Jepard leaves the shop, but he his eyes can’t focus and he’s in pain.. Jepard gets away – drat!!

Amanda’s very gentle here.. I’m guessing Lee hasn’t  experienced much gentle in his life.. and for many years he never would have thought he wanted to or needed to.. but here?
He seems to welcome it and soak up some comfort from Amanda’s gentleness Smile

Amanda gives up on trying to see his eyes, and instead, comfortingly runs her hands down his lapels.. comforting him or her? or both? Smile

It does seem like Amanda is looking for a little comfort of her own.. He’d give you a hug Amanda but he’s in too much pain!
This reminds me of their hug in Over the Limit.. Where Amanda runs her hands along his lapels and then they hug..

awh.. (lol Lee looks so good here!! Here’s the hug if you want to revisit Lee err I mean the hug!)
The scene ends with Amanda grabbing Lee’s jacket with both hands…

This is a nice touch  (whoo pun!)  – a mutual ‘moment’ between the two of them is not possible because Lee can’t see her.. me thinks we’ll get the real pay off later! Smile though I think Amanda is having a bit of a moment – what do you think?

  1. I can’t get enough of that scene of Amanda coming to Lee’s aid. I wish we could have had it go longer before the scene changes. My only complaint is that when Lee reaches up to rub his eyes again, Amanda does nothing to stop him. With her apparent first aid expertise with the boys and trailblazers–I would have expected her to reach for his hands to keep him from rubbing the debris into his eyes further.

  2. I love love LOVE the touchy-feelieness of this scene in the store! I’m just sorry Lee can’t completely enjoy it because he’s hurt. But her hands on his cheeks are so loving and tender. I think she needs the comforting touches as much as he does!

  3. Can’t imagine Toys R Us allowing a shop to infringe on its trademark these days. Ah the heady and carefree days of the 80’s LOL

    I am a surprised that Amanda isn’t more concerned at this point about her safety. Lance is missing. Strange men come to her house and knock the front door. Not sure rushing off to buy a dress for a reunion I am not sure I want to attend would be high on my list of priorities. Or maybe that’s just me….
    So the clerk can still smell the tear gas…..does he not dry clean his stock then? Feels more like a grotty fancy dress shop where stuff has been worn by all manner of sweaty folk…..not sure there will ever be much of a call for an 80’s dress shop. With the size of the shoulder pads on some garments you wouldn’t be able to fit much stuff on the rails!

    Amanda really seems to let her guard down when she’s tending to Lee. Maybe because she doesn’t have the pressure of him actually being able to look at her. She seems to desperately want a hug off Lee. Such a sweet moment.

    1. Oh My Heck Bitsybeans, you are on a roll! Yeah I don’t think you could fit many outfits with those shoulder pads on a rack. What were we thinking dressing like that? I especially loved stacking where you had several layers of clothing, each with its own shoulder pads. Very handy when you are going for that ‘No-Neck” look. I was alarmed when 80s throwback fashion started showing up in the stores. Hopefully, it is short lived. 🙂

  4. Nothing I can add to anything that has already being said and said so much better than I could – but I will try anyway:-)
    What is with Jepard? This brilliant hitman who so subtly killed super spies with beer barrels openly going into a boutique and taking out his gun??? Doesn’t really seem believable.
    ALso, and I know this is just me, because no one else raised it but I always thought 60’s clothes were mini skirts and capri pants and little shift dresses? There must have been a whole other (not so televised) fashion world that I was unaware of.

    1. Me too, Michele. I always thought 60s clothes were more ‘mod’, like Mad Men, and with boots made for walkin’. Maybe that was the 60s style of you weren’t a ‘flower child’ or didn’t go to Woodstock or live in Haight-Ashbury? I’m really not sure. I could be writing gibberish. Amanda strikes me more as someone who would dress in the ‘mod’ style than the style of clothes in this store.

    2. I think towards the end of the 60’s the hippie culture featured lots of long flowing dresses and skirts, muslin blouses, and so on. When I look at photos from that decade it seems to me that was probably the first decade that fashion became quite diverse. Whereas in the decades prior it appears most people felt compelled to follow the fashion norms of the time – few people had the courage to look “different”.

      1. Well the 60 started out as one thing, fairly conservative dress. You still wore suits and dresses to travel on a plane. It transitioned to short skirts and mod type dress to jeans, peasant blouses, long bohemian dresses. Lots of different styles existed at the same time in the mid to late 60s and early 70s. I know because my siblings and I probably wore them all LOL!

    Love this Kiwismh- I agree this is very much about Amanda’s shift from friends to lovers – there is a new depth here in her intimacy toward Lee as he is oblivious and struggling with his eyes.. I am seeing here that something has changed in Amanda.. This moment to me is all about Amanda- the touching has always been there sure, but it’s different here.. I also see the uncertainty – but I would not put it down to her head and heart not being quite in sync. (so to speak)It feels like it is to me.. but others may disagree.

I wonder – If Lee had been able to see perfectly well here, would Amanda have revealed herself quite so much as I think she has? Lee not being able to see her here could have freed her to be less guarded for just a moment.. and let us (the audience) in on this progress in her heart and mind toward Lee – hmm.. I look forward to continuing and finding out if Lee can see this too by episode’s end 🙂

    1. I agree that here in this scene Amanda has fallen for Lee completely and she knows it. Something has changed for her between then end of Fast Food For Thought and now and I try to pin it on those phone conversations in Playing for Keeps and what she saw of Lee at Birchwood. Somehow those little bits that she got to see of Lee made it safe for her to let go of the last chains holding her heart’s door closed to him (as if she could really keep it closed, haha). Its wide open and the flood is pouring through the gate. Now she has to figure out how to control it while its flowing. So much fun to watch!

    2. I like the idea of this being Amanda’s defining moment when her feelings have fully matured. This particular scene is also a moment when she can be with Lee and he doesn’t see her, so he doesn’t see her expressions which may be part of that realization surfacing (i.e., the pivotal moment for Amanda). I wondered why she was staring at his chest too. Yes, maybe she was enjoying that checkered shirt as much as I do… 😉 But I also wondered if her eyes were really looking toward his heart.

      I do see what Kiwismh is saying about a disconnect between the heart and the head, though. I love the symbolism with that dangling heart necklace. Her heart is ready. But if Amanda’s head was completely clear on things, then what else would she need except to know that Lee is ready? Would she make the first move herself? Maybe it’s not in her nature to make a move, I can’t really say whether she would. Whether she thinks Lee is ready ‘might’ be considered a head-to-heart disconnect, ‘for her.’ She is definitely seeing signs that he’s allowing her in. These brief moments may be giving her all the encouragement she needs, so she’s fine with waiting this out. No hurry, right? Just enjoy the ride. She’s definitely enjoying the casual, but meaningful touches and the closeness. Lee’s still a complicated individual who hasn’t given his heart away and she may be wondering whether he’ll continue to allow her in or if they’ll just remain friends. I remember a few times when I was right in that place where Amanda is, wondering whether to wait this out or protect myself (might explain why I’m not married, but anyway). I think it’s easy to have that head-to-heart disconnect too when you’re wondering what the other person will do.

      1. I still see a disconnect between Amanda’s head and heart at this point. I think her heart is falling but her head is still telling her to watch out or slow down. This is Lee – her head know his history, his job, and he is her boss even though he calls her his partner. But I do think it is getting harder for her heart not to fully fall. I do think her heart and her head sense that Lee is falling for her and cares very much for her. In those emotional moments they share, it is very hard not to just let go with him, but I think when she is back at home and in her alternate reality, her head cools her heart off just slightly. For now anyway.

  6. Hi All! I’ve been following this blog for months and months, but I’m wayyyy behind because I didn’t stumble upon the blog until early last year. So I’ve been catching up, reading all of the reviews and all of the comments. I couldn’t help but jump in now, as The Triumvirate is one of my favorite episodes, if not my all-time favorite. Iwsod, you are so entertaining! So many of the little things you point out during the walk-through of each ep, have me cracking up! It’s been a pleasure and I hope that I will be able to join you all in commenting from time to time. I’ve equally enjoyed all of the back and fourth in the comments! I feel like I know you all already 🙂 I was pretty young when the series first aired. I was 12 when it went off the air in 87 (SOB!), but I loved it wayyyy back then and got back into it last year as I purchased all of the DVD’s from Amazon. By the end of the Pilot, I re-discovered my love for this series and am enjoying it as much, if not more, watching as an adult. Thanks so much for a fun place to re-hash this great series, 30 years later!! As for this scene… I love that Lee swoops in like the hero he is, ready to rescue Amanda! If that piece of mannequin didn’t pop in his eye, you know he would have given Jepard a little Secret Agent once-over for messing with his girl! 🙂

      By the end of the Pilot, I re-discovered my love for this series and am enjoying it as much, if not more, watching as an adult.

I think I enjoy it on a much deeper level now than I did when a young girl.. back then it was all whooooo Lee Stetson is dreamy! and now?       well yes Lee Stetson is still dreamy.. and I love to play up this silliness for fun.. but as an adult the show has a much deeper story to tell which I completely overlooked as a youngster.. and I enjoy it so much more now- maybe more so now that tv shows just don’t do this kind of story telling about a romance anymore!!!

      1. I like this discussion about whether or not we enjoy the show more or when we first saw it. I loved it when I was a teenager, but I don’t think I knew why it appealed to me so much. When I rediscovered it a few years ago part of the reason why I dove in so deeply was to figure out what was so appealing about a silly spy series filmed in the 80’s. But it didn’t take long for me o pinpoint the reason. Like Iwsod said, they don’t tell love stories like this anymore. Something about the slow and deep bloom of the love between these two reminds me of what I like about classic romance novels like Jane Austen. There is a wonderful depth and integrity about how these two fall in love and how that love really heals them and shapes them. Yup, its a good one 🙂

        3. Discussions like these are so fun and funny because you can really see just how different everybody is and that’s a good thing. I think I love SMK about the same then as I do now, but the reasons why I love it have changed. When it first aired, I had a huge crush on Lee and the idea of an ordinary housewife being able to help him on all of his cases to get the baddies and win the day was thrilling. I also wanted them to get together romantically, it was such a good love story. Now as an adult, I still find Lee quite handsome and charming, but looking at him and Amanda through adult eyes I appreciate more the development of the relationship, the parts of the story we don’t see on screen but we know must happen, and I can see the love story through experienced eyes.

        4. I was very addicted for the three weeks I got to see it in 1992 before the time slot change. So addicted that I used to imagine I was Amanda, that Phillip and Jamie were my baby brothers instead of sons, and Lee, Billy and I worked as a secret unit of child spies out of our school…oh I can’t believe I’m admitting this! LOL

          But I love it much more now and there are a few reasons for that.

          1) I grew up in a household that didn’t really understand TV addiction and this was pre internet where I could finally learn I was “normal.” So I probably relax more in my enjoyment–especially with a Dr. Smyth-like-stepparent no longer in the picture!

          2) I definitely have a new appreciation for the romance angles because I’ve matured in realizing what a true love relationship should look like. As a kid, it was enough to know “They like each other.” Now I see several pairings I rooted for back in the day that would probably be headed for divorce or at least needing heavy counseling.

          3) Today’s T.V. shows…I could put this delicately but I prefer to instead quote something I heard BB say in a fan encounter video where he called it “crap.” Everything is just so dark and gory and the romance is more about sex than an actual loving relationship. I have a whole new appreciation for shows like SMK, Hart To Hart, Father Dowling Mysteries, and Diagnosis Murder that prove you can have adventure and suspense and still able to sleep at night.

          4) And this show just came into my life at the perfect time. I had to give up two fandoms I’ve been a part of for years because of things that were happening, so SMK has been such a ray of light when I most needed it.

I can’t tell you how many times I wanted to comment on a thread, but seeing the last posts in the comments section being over a year ago, I didn’t. Wasn’t sure if you all jumped backward, so I just kept on reading. But I have been very entertained and had lots of laughs at your commentary. The things you point out are quite funny sometimes and things that a lot of us may have missed!

        I can’t remember what season that I began watching SMK when it ran on CBS… I think my mom had watched it from time to time and then I got hooked and wound up never missing. I caught up on all of the episodes I missed in re-runs and syndication. I was so sad when the series ended. I couldn’t understand why KJ was missing from the last handful of episodes… and then the news of her cancer was announced and it all made sense. I wish they could have made it work for a S5 and the series wasn’t cancelled. I would have loved to see them work as a married couple and see how all the secrecy of the marriage worked out… but that never was.

        I truly loved the show as a kid, but watching now, I have a different love for it. I’ve found that watching as an adult allows for a better understanding of things and storylines and also some of the jokes I may have missed as a kid. I loved the romance of the show then and I love it now! I wish more shows today were like this. This is why I decided to delve back into the show last year… b/c I can’t find anything on TV today that was like my favorite shows growing up.

        Oh yes… Lee Stetson is verrrrrrryyyyy dreamy! I sometimes need to fan myself due to his swoony, dreamy, heroic actions! Did I just say that out loud :O

  7. I can’t say anything more than has been said. I just absolutely love this episode!!! Lee and Amanda speak volumes about how they feel about each other without really saying anything at all (reminds me of a song by Alison Krauss~ When you say nothing at all). IMHO there isn’t any greater love story than these two characters…now please pass the smelling salts.

  8. Ok, off he cuff. My son worked on a Toyz R Us sign a bit ago so all I can think abot is how many LEDs are in a sign like that (I know , its florescent). Ad I am so glad you gave us a link to the Gracie Slick video because I had no context for that comment of the salesman smelling the leather, other than the fact that he could smell pot and tear gas etc. But that video reminds me of a woman in my church (don’t ask) and i gives credence to our Rabbit hole references.
    here is a red and gold garment behind the salesman and Amanda right before she decides to go try the dress on and I swear it is exactly like a costume that I wrestle with every year in Ahavah for the character of Herod ( I have to make it fit any and every stature of young man over and over again).
    But all that aside. I love the urgency and unguardedness in Lee’s voice as he calls for Amanda. And all I can say is that if there wasn’t something in Lee’s eyes here at the end f this scene we would have had a very heated moment…

  9. I always assumed that Jeopard followed Amanda like Lee&Amanda said. He had already been contacted by Falkan and been told to take care of her.

    The shop owner is played by musician Billy Vera who started out in the 60s and then had that song At This Moment that was a hit in the 80s. Lots of retro stuff going on here. Loved Jefferson Airplane and its various incarnations. Several of their songs look like could relate to Lee and Amanda.

    Loving all this Lee and Amanda goodness. They’ve never had a problem with touching each other or being in each other’s personal space, but the touching now seems more caring and intimate. It’s more emotional. There is more than comfort behind it. It’s second nature to them and it’s like they are oblivious to anything else around them and it’s just the two of them. So swoony and wonderful.

      I had to google him.. found this song on youtube – and.. I’m still drawing a complete blank over this guy lol..

      According to Wikipedia his big number 1 hit ‘At this moment’ [still drawing a blank!] was released in 1981.. and was then re released in 1987 and went to number 1.
      This episode was in feb 1986.
      I’m going to claim SMK’s credit for giving Billy Vera a number 1 hit. Yep I think it’s all because he was in this episode 😉 and no pah! certainly not because of some little tv show called Family ties or something.. 😉

      1. I watched a You Tube video – I vaguely recognise the song/tune. I must’ve heard it on the radio back in the 80’s. I can’t remember it being in the charts but maybe it was a minor hit in NZ.

      2. I remember now it was Family Ties where I heard the song. Family Ties was a top rating sit-com back in the day – I thought it was very funny at the time, not sure how it would hold up now if I watched it again. But it had pretty good cast and Michael J Fox was of course an extremely talented comedic actor.

  10. How did Jepard find Amanda? He read the tea leaves. I’m convinced that since all baddies drink tea, they must have magical powers. I wonder if it says so on the box. Acme Sipping Tea Leaves – Guaranteed to reveal the whereabouts of anyone you need to kill.

    Oh my, Grace Slick looks very young in that video! I keep hearing We Built This City in my head now.

    And the sales clerk is kind of, I don’t know, too laid back or something. Not creepy, but I wouldn’t want to have to be in his store for too long.

    I don’t believe Jepard. Of course he drinks tea. He’s a baddie. All SMK baddies drink tea. He’s lying to maintain his cover.

    OMG – great catch, iwsod! That is Lee’s care already parked out front before he’s supposed to be there. Just like in the dropping dry cleaning laundry scene of CWars.

    And I think Lee realizes that scream is not Amanda’s. He knows her voice, her scream.

    OK – that’s all I’ve got now…just sitting her with a stupid smile on my face at all the swoony goodness happening here. Amanda can’t help but touch Lee, and Lee is totally okay with it. And I’m okay with it. Now all I can hear in my head is Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now. Anyone else hearing it?

  11. Iwsod, it occurred to me that the late 60’s focus might be about time warping back to Lee and Amanda’s late teens – fresh and young, the uncertainty and awkwardness but also the thrill of first love. Is this aspect of the show also a metaphor for renewal and second chances?
    My brain’s a bit tired now, but I am sure Morley or one of the other wise JWWM sages can put it into better words than I.

  12. Love that old Woodstock footage of Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane (I think they later become Jefferson Starship, then just Starship in the 80’s but I reckson their best music was as Jefferson Airplane. If you liked that clip check out Janis Joplin – I’ve posted a clip at Neds).
    Anyway, for the reunion Amanda should definitely find and wear that white outfit Grace Slick is wearing. (That dress the 60’s dude is holding up looks more Little House on the Praire than 60’s Reunion.)
    I think Jeppard is also business – when he’s working (making a kill) he’s completely focussed on that. – like the bad terminator in T2. I agree with whoever said he should have used the offer of a cuppa to divert the shopkeeper. We’ve already seen how much he enjoys his work of hurting people and wanted an excuse to deck the shopkeeper too. Evil dude… very evil. 👿
    Aside from assessing and alleviating his physical injury, Amanda seems like she wants to hold Lee (and be held) but she also seems uncertain. It’s like she’s in this halfway space between friends and lovers, where her heart and her head are not quiet in-sync. She settles for lots of touching, which she knows will soothe Lee in the meantime, but I think the touching is also about some soothing relief for her too.
    Plus… she’s totally checking him out in that last frame. You go girl! 😉

I also remember sitting outside my older sister’s high school listening to Jefferson Airplane (Grace Slick was the lead vocal) and The Doors among others play in the stadium.   15. So Jerard doesn’t like tea? Or he doesn’t drink? lol…I think both are lies. He probably had a few cups before he went out there (as baddies do!) And I’m going with the idea that it’s something “in” the tea that makes it “baddie-tea.” That way we can all drink tea without guilt. Is that better, Jestress? (i.e., from last post) 😉

    Anyway, love that moment with Lee and Amanda reuniting, and how she automatically goes for his lapels. She’s done that on a few occasions. I’m remembering other episodes as well as OTL when she does this. I like her heart necklace dangling in that scene. It does seem symbolic. Like you said, Iwsod, I love how he’s just focusing in on her voice and her touch, which is probably wrecking some of his concentration. He knows he needs to find Jerard, get her somewhere safe, etc. I think he’d rather stay put a little longer. 😉

    1. It’s nice to know that it’s safe to enjoy a good cup of tea without necessarily having to turn to the dark side. 🙂 Although I understand that they have cookies . . . 😉

      On the other hand, maybe Jepard is just so evil that he’s beyond SMK tea-level creepiness. O.o

      He’s also not a very good tactician. He could tell the store owner that he likes his tea but that he only drinks it with sugar or maybe honey so could he please bring him a cup with some kind of sweetener in it (but preferably a natural sweetener) so the guy will be distracted for awhile and Jepard can do what he came here to do. Not that I actually want to help him. I’m just saying that I would think that a baddie who’s been in the business as long as he apparently has would think of things like this.

      Love Lee racing in to rescue Amanda! 😀

    Nice catch on the Corvette parked out front at the beginning of the scene. Maybe there were a bunch of retro shops on the block and it took Lee awhile to find the right one? I cringed when Jepard called Amanda his girlfriend but laughed at the “I don’t drink” line.

      Cute scene with Amanda giving vulnerable little boy Lee some TLC. In any other episode, that little exchange would be the highlight of the episode for Learjet… 🙂

      2. I agree, Learjet — Jepard’s humor gives me a smile too. As far as the shop assistant, I think he was another SMK caricature of an ex-flower child. Thankfully they refrained from throwing “groovy” and “are you hip” in there. (At least I think they did.)

      My theory for the Corvette in the opening frame is that:
      The ‘vette has some kind of tracking device following Amanda on it’s own (like K.I.T.T.) and than it’s going back to get Lee, so he could rescue her. 😉
