6/15 Season Three, Episode 17: The Eyes Have It-Scarecrow and Mrs King

So, we left Amanda driving the purple heart car (I call Thumper). She was off to meet Lee and follow Billy’s orders to stay with Lee and ‘keep him there’ can only assume ‘there’ is back at the hospital…

Next thing.. we see a zoom shot on a high rise..
3.17 TEHI.avi_001222455Is it just me or do only bad guys live in these high rise buildings? Even Lee’s apartment wasn’t that much of a high rise..
We see a close up on one of the contact lenses..
3.17 TEHI.avi_001224257
The baddie is (oh ROFL!) on the baddie phone: Except for the word Barnstorm everything else is in code, Goldberg. Are you being cute with me?
3.17 TEHI.avi_001229662
Goldberg
: You need the other lens. You put them together you got a completed image.
3.17 TEHI.avi_001231765
Baddie: Oh the other lens. Funny how you didn’t mention that before.
3.17 TEHI.avi_001238972
[LOL we are overdosing on all the clues that this guy is a super baddie! He smokes too.. If he sips tea, grows a beard and shows someone his art collection,  I swear I will pass out from laughing!]
Goldberg: I’m not holding out on you, Brody; [Brody the Baddie.. Or Brody the Broody Baddie.. lol..]
…I’m just keeping you honest. You’ll get the other lens when I get what I need from you.
3.17 TEHI.avi_001241675
Brody
: You don’t play with me, Goldberg. You don’t hold me up. The deal will go through. I’m just worried about your skin.
Goldberg: Save your threats.
3.17 TEHI.avi_001252185[He has a pinkie ring Goldberg.. don’t play with him!]
Brody: Not me. Stetson. He’s not a rookie player. He’ll hurt you when he finds out who took his lenses. Besides, when I make this sale, I wanna guarantee the goods. I don’t want Stetson on my tail. Is that clear?
3.17 TEHI.avi_001262395[Goldberg doesn’t seem to have thought about the fact that it will be obvious to Lee he took the lenses.. he’s trying to be smart.. lol.. but.. I guess he is a ‘rookie player’! ]
Goldberg: No.
Brody: Kill him or no deal.
3.17 TEHI.avi_001271404[As Brody says this so nonchalantly he breaths out a mouthful of cigarette smoke.. Hmm we seem to have another dragon guys! LOL in the screen capture it just looks like his phone is smoking up haaaaa.. ]
Goldberg: Brody? Brody?
Brody hangs up. Get the message? Brody is ruthless – he hangs up on people Winking smile whoooooo!
So why does Brody want the list? To sell it to the highest bidder? Is that right?

Back to Lee’s  hospital room. We find Lee is sound asleep as the camera pans across his room.
3.17 TEHI.avi_001290623
this is the clearest shot I can get Winking smile
Dr Goldberg quietly enters the room holding a small paper cup. He places it on the tray table and pours a cup of water to go with it.
3.17 TEHI.avi_001317650
Cue the super close up on the paper cup! LOL!
3.17 TEHI.avi_001321554
I see that magazine there is a yachting magazine – hey nice tie in to Flight to Freedom.. I can just see Lee and Amanda doing plenty of sailing together in their off time Smile

Back at Amanda’s – hey! I thought she was ordered to stay with Lee?! Hmm.. I guess she had to go home and change. Okay- I’ll give her that!
Dotty: Hmmmm I thought you were gonna take a nap. You were at that hospital all night .
Amanda: Well I know, mother, but I dozed on and off. I’m all right.
3.17 TEHI.avi_001331464
Haaaa!!! did you see it? sitting on top of the pile of books is Full Moon Over Moscow!!! whahahaaha!!!! Here it was in One Bear Dances the Other Bear Doesn’t:
SCARECROW_MRS_KING_S3_D3-05.avi_20150823_103905.162
Dotty
: How is Mr Simpson? You haven’t said.
[Mr Simpson?!!!!!  After seeing The Pharaoh’s Engineer I like to think this is a reference to Lee’s relationship with Rupert. I’m trying to keep track of this..trying! In Playing for Keeps Lee calls and Dotty recognises his voice as ‘Mr Simpson’ -It seems Lee has been allocated a permanent alias for addressing Dotty..]
Amanda: well he’s OK. He has a concussion. But he’s not critical. You know,  he’s a little bit groggy.
Dotty: Uh-oh. He had a head injury, huh? That means you’re gonna sleep all day.
3.17 TEHI.avi_001341975[A perfect opportunity to refer back to Amanda’s head injury in I am not now, nor have I ever been a spy! Ahhh wishful thinking!]
(Dotty has gone to the cupboard and it looks like she’s gotten some peanut butter and marshmallows for herself-gag!!)

Amanda: Well I know but I thought, you know, I’d just take him some books and things so he’d have something to do when he wakes up.
(Amanda picks up Moon over Moscow and puts it down again. I would have loved to see Amanda bring Lee ‘Loves Fatal Flaw’! whahahaa)
Dotty: Listen, honey, I’m gonna tell you something. You have got to take care of yourself… [How ironic – as she says this, Dotty gets a marshmallow out of the bag and slathers it with peanut butter..I won’t go off on a rant.. I won’t.. I really want to.. but I won’t.. I promise..] …I have been through enough hospital vigils to know. They can just run you
ragged.
3.17 TEHI.avi_001352185
(Amanda watches in fascination as her mother does her frankenfood thing)
Amanda: I know, mother, but he’s such a nice man.
3.17 TEHI.avi_001356690[awh this is too cute! and completely inadequate and understated! Smile  It certainly doesn’t scream – he’s the guy I’m seeing at work… more like Mr Simpson is the elderly guy who occupies the next cubicle]
Dotty: Hmm, well could be. But when are the boys and I gonna see you?
3.17 TEHI.avi_001360593
[now. you’re seeing her now- a little reminder for us of Amanda’s struggles she shared in the Triumvirate]
Amanda: I’m just going to the hospital.
Dotty: Hmm? Yesterday you were just going to the airport…
3.17 TEHI.avi_001366900[At this Amanda just smiles – lol.. I guess she just tries to downplay things?] …. and you came home with your car in a thousand pieces.
Amanda: Mother, can I have that one?
You can’t get it into your mouth anyway.
3.17 TEHI.avi_001370503[Oh nooo!! Amanda actually wants to eat that disgusting junk- so early in the morning? ahhh iwsod.. move on.. I will choose to see this as Amanda wanting to distract Dotty from her observations here]
Dotty gives Amanda her peanut marshmallow mouth bomb and takes Amanda’s bowl of Oaties..
Dotty: Trade you?
3.17 TEHI.avi_001373206
Amanda
: Mmmm.

Yeah I’m guessing it would be hard to talk with that in your mouth.. but as per usual – it didn’t stop Dotty from participating in half this discussion! haaaa.. Not much stops Dotty from talking!

Lovely also that Dotty is not thrilled with Amanda’s unpredictable behaviour  – but she doesn’t press for answers.. and still shares her frankenfood with Amanda Smile

Okay guys I’ll pause here for the moment – looking forward to hearing from ya!!!!

  1. We have a saying in my family…..rib sticking stuff. That’s what I think when I see Dotty eating PB and marshmallows. I imagine that combo sticks to the roof of your mouth something shocking……

Am I the only one who things the Barnstorm list is incredibly short to warrant hiding on contact lenses….seems a bit of overkill to me but of course vital for plot device 😉

    1. I thought the Barnstorm list was a coded list of names, so while that list doesn’t seem long, it may not be full names.

  2. Every time I see this scene with Amanda and Dotty I want to stuff a peanut butter laden marshmallow in my mouth. Its a good thing we don’t keep marshmallows around the house and when we do they disappear rapidly.

I think Amanda does down play everything around her mother, it must be the technique that works best for her. I agree Mr. Simpson does sound like the nice old man at work. Maybe she is sticking with her relationship with Rupert in her head when she talks about Lee, it would make it easier to hide her initial reactions when thinking about Lee.

And why does Amanda want Lee to read “Full Moon over Moscow”? Is she trying to suggest something to him?

Last thought.. I wonder if the bad guys think that if they destroyed Lee’s network they might render him ineffective for a while? I have to fill in the holes, or at least try too.

Please do fill in the holes! 🙂 Indeed it is at least good to try- for the sake of Lee’s dignity and the love of the show!! 🙂
Yeah that could work…but then why not just kill Lee? that could make him pretty ineffective for a while too.. 😉

I’d be more comfortable with the overall plot if the list had been another agent’s who Lee had known, and who had been killed and the list taken from him (umm he had written the list down in code in case something happened to him- and told Lee to find the lenses if anything happened to him)… so Lee then has a personal mission to get the lenses back.. and lots of innocent civilians to look after..
It doesn’t have all the civilians putting their trust in Lee – like we know those on barnstorm list have, and I think the writers wanted Lee and the people on the list to have a personal bond of trust.. but.. I could forgo that so that losing the list in the first place wasn’t Lee’s fault! Does this work? or are there plot holes in this plot hole filler? whahahaahaa

      1. But maybe there is a requirement that Lee has to have a personal connection – if not with the baddie (he was my roommate in college, was married to my cousin, taught me to spit watermelon seeds when we were kids, killed the men on my team), then with the good guys. Because this pretty much happens every episode, I can only assume it was spelled out in the writer’s contract.

      2. Wasn’t Brody telling Goldberg to kill Lee. But if they did get rid of Lee would that make the Barnstorm list not worth very much. Brody wants to sell it right? Ugh. I think I will just stay away from plot holes…

True, it would make a better thrilling spy plot if Lee was protecting another dead agents innocent civilian “family” but I kind of like the way we get to watch Lee coping with his vulnerability and dependency on others and the fact that there is a cost to true interdependent relationships.I kind of think that may be what this is about…

Me thinks when Morley is pointing out plot holes things are lookin pretty bad whahahahaa.. As Morley, in general, tends to overlook these types of questions no? But hey Morley – welcome to the plot crater appreciation club lol. err well I had to give it some kind of positive spin!

You’ve identified a beauty here – kill Lee.. and list is meaningless.. aie.. you’ve summed it up well!

Absolutely! I’d agree with all this Morley, I just find the complete lack of a coherent story pretty distracting and I tend to distract others with it 😉 ohhh the shame! 😉 tee hee..

Yes I can see they were wanting to make the stakes High for Lee here – all these people personally put their trust in Lee.. and he knows them all and is responsible for them all – it’s a wonderful idea! It shows the weight of the responsibility Lee carries in this job of his, when so many people are putting their trust in him like this.. and.. the guilt if he can’t fix this! There’s a lot at stake for Lee here in this situation.. very high stakes.. and all the while his body is shutting down on him – right at the worst possible time.
I too can definitely see why there would be some dissociation going on here for Lee..

[but the plot craters makes such little sense that, for me, a lot of this effect is lost in confusion- but hey that’s just me]

I wonder if this idea of Lee feeling the weight of responsibility for the people and relationships he has is meant to build on the conversation that Lee and Amanda had while he was perched on the couch about losing his share of relationships due to the job. Is this an example of that possible loss?

As for disassociation… see my comment in post 9.

  3. Just to leave the( much more interesting and amusing) peanut butter discussion – I’m just wondering why the Barnstorm list would fetch such a high price. Its a list of unofficial informants. I presume they give information and they don’t have any. Their contact is Lee Stetson who everyone knows is a spy anyway. If they killed/tortured or frightened the informants, Lee would be very upset but its unlikely the agency would be compromised of the likes of Dirk to be too bothered. Ie – I don’t see it having any value except to Lee and the poor unfortunate patriots. Am I missing something?

    Like

    1. I’ve been wondering that too. It doesn’t even make sense that they want it in order to have leverage on Lee since they now want to kill him. A very few of these informants might be of interest to baddies – like the gas jockey and masseuse who spy on the Russians – but once again, this is essentially a gaping plot hole. Why is Billy so surprised to hear what the baddies were after when he must have sent Lee on this zero contact mission to Very Hot Land in the first place?

      Like

      1. Billy says Lee took off and barely had time to fill them in with the details (post 1). Personal contacts are only important to Lee, which proves yours and Michelle’s point. If there was some ‘official’ activity going on involving Barnstorm, this would make more sense. Or maybe these informants have information of past events that the baddies are trying to stop ‘going forward’? I’m guessing at this point.

  4. Love this scene between Kate and Beverly! I always thought KJ laughing at BG was something that happened off script, as she looks like she is really laughing. BG is trying to stick all those marshmallows into her mouth, with peanut butter, no less… and then her words get a little jumbled and KJ laughs. Has anyone read the script for this episode? Always wondered if the last part is in there!

  5. As BJo has rightly pointed out, we’ve got a bit carried away in our talk of peanut butter (I’m very guilty of this; sorry, BJo and Iwsod) so I’ve created a peanut butter thread at Neds. It’s in the off-topic section because, well, it’s off-topic.

    1. Hey Learjet! Yes, I think we’re all a bit guilty of the peanut butter talk – myself included! But thank you for starting the thread at Ned’s. I should have created a thread myself but thought perhaps the conversation about it was over – lol – peanut butter it turns out, is an interesting topic!

  6. As far as Dotty’s snack goes, I can;t help but think of a conversation I had with friends years ago about the ability of peanut butter to go with anything – and the weird combinations that ended up being very specific to families. One friend regularly brought PB and bacon sandwiches to school whereas our family go-to sandwich was PB, mayo and lettuce. I know it sounds disgusting but it had this while salty/sweet/crispy thing going for it. BG seems so adept at creating these that I have to wonder if the writers wrote in one of her real-life quirks.

    1. Peanut butter seems to be more popular in the US than anywhere else I’ve travelled. Whereas in Australia, it’s regarded with suspicion (v high prevalence of peanut allergies), so peanut butter combos are a bit unexpected. Was surprised about the apple/peanut butter idea which someone (an American) suggested to me, and I recently tried peanut butter icing (frosting) on chocolate cupcakes (yum!). So maybe marshmallows…I think you may be right about it being a BG-specific quirk.

      1. As peanut-allergy-free American, I can’t imagine life without peanut butter. PB&J sammies are still a go-to for me when I don’t feel like cooking or just want something comforting.

      2. Really I could eat peanut butter with anything! Carrots and PB are good too…I like to melt PB and pour it over chocolate ice cream.

      3. One of my friends thought it was weird when I ordered two scoops of ice cream, one peanut butter and the other coffee, one time when I couldn’t make up my mind what I wanted. But, I regularly like to have peanut butter sandwiches and coffee. It seems less weird to me than peanut butter and pickles, and I know other people do that. I find that less acceptable than peanut butter and banana, but still familiar.

Yeah, in the U.S., people pair peanut butter with just about everything. It’s such a common food that everyone is used to from childhood that, unless they have an allergy, it’s something everyone has on hand and can reach for when they want an easy snack. It’s kind of like the blue jeans of food — everyone has is, it can go well with all sorts of things, and even when people pair it with something unusual it still seems oddly familiar.

      4. Mmm, love PB & Bacon sandwiches, but I kicked the habit years ago. I do still enjoy PB & honey sandwiches from time to time as a switch from PB&J. And I keep a jar of PB at work so I can put it on the apples and bananas that I bring in for lunch. I remember watching this scene once after I rediscovered SMK and being inspired to try the PB & marshmallow thing — it was yummy!

  7. Is it just me or do only bad guys live in these high rise buildings? Even Lee’s apartment wasn’t that much of a high rise.

Lee did live in a high rise when he was supposed to be a baddie in Savior, so I think there may be some truth to what you’re saying, iwsod.

Not sure about the rant on the peanutbutter marshmallow snack of Dottie’s. Yes, it is an awful lot of sugar, but in the 80s, sugar wasn’t public enemy number one that it is today. And a fluffernutter sandwich was a special yummy treat that I would get in my school lunch bag on occasion. Please don’t knock the fluffernutter! Lol 😀

I find it more gross that she is going to put cereal in her mouth before she swallows the peanut butter marshmallow. I know Oaties (aka Cheerios) are pretty neutral, but all those textures with the milk?

Great catch on the Mr. Simpson name and linking it to Rupert. It is quite coincidental that Simpson and Stetson are similar, but I really rather like the idea that Lee has used that name for his name with Dotty as it ties in with Rupert and the idea of family. Awww.

  8. I enjoyed this exchange with Dotty and Amanda too. With two small kids, they probably have a private stash. Even a cabinet or two between them with goodies. They could have picked up the peanut butter/marshmallow combo from the kids, like Valerie said. They all go camping every year (can’t remember which episode mentions that) and that’s probably a good snack to have handy.

By the way, Iwsod, baddies in high rises are also breathing less oxygen and the smoking is making it worse. Not enough oxygen to the brain. Give it a year and he probably will grow his beard long and start showing his art collection. I see the potential. 😉

  10. I love the mother/daughter dynamic in this scene with Dotty and Amanda. Even though Dotty is doing a bit of fussing you can still see the love and caring there. This scene sort of reminds me of when the Golden Girls would get out the cheesecake to have a confab.

I remember eating some weird combinations as a kid and then once I got older they weren’t so appealing. Maybe Jamie and Phillip came up with the peanut butter/marshmallow combo and it sort of stuck with the family. It’s kind of like weird s’more thing. I’m not a fan of marshmallows anyway so it wouldn’t be my cup of tea, unless there’s some chocolate involved I probably wouldn’t try it.

Amanda’s line about Mr. Simpson being such a nice man is some foreshadowing I think, but I’ll hold that thought. I hope I remember later on. At least we know that Billy did make the call to Dotty or at least someone in the Agency did. But, how does Dotty know the car is in a thousand pieces? Amanda went straight to the hospital and never left. I would assume the car wasn’t towed home. The only way she would know that is if Amanda had to explain her current mode of transportation. I would think that since Amanda’s avoiding answering now that she didn’t really tell her what happened.

  11. You might want to look away for this one, iwsod. Has anyone out there ever tried peanut butter and marshmallows? I haven’t, but I’m thinking it may not be too bad…you know, that sweet/salty thing? I don’t keep marshmallows in the house or I’d volunteer to try it. Solely for the sake of SMK and JWWM, of course.

        1. Those who do the grocery shopping decide the size of the marshmallows and get to eat them afterward. It is only right and just. 😉

Yeah, I think Dotty bought them herself just because she wanted to do this. I think it’s another one of those little pieces of suburban life that the show likes to slip in as contrast to the spy stuff. Lots of people have little improvised snacks that other people think are weird but can be surprisingly good once in awhile.

    3. I have not tried peanut butter on a marshmallow like Dottie does here, but I do like a fluffernutter sandwich. I put a link to it in my comment above. It looks like it may be a regional American thing, but it is quite good every once in a great while. I haven’t had one in probably over 5 or 6 years, but I do have a container of Fluff in my cupboard (I bought it for something else).

If anyone wants to discuss this further, let’s take it over to Ned’s. I know we could all get carried away by all this food talk – at least I know I could!

    4. Actually, the sugar is probably the healthiest thing in store-bought marshmallows. There’s nothing wrong with sugar – especially raw or unrefined sugar, mollases, etc, – so long as the “energy in” equals or is less than “energy out”. Most people don’t get the “energy out” bit right.
Dotty and Amanda don’t have the figures of people who rountinely indulge in that kind of food.
Anyway, I must away to the gutter – I see there is a party of sorts happening there today. 😉

  12. The Amanda/Dotty scene is one of the cutest. Every time I’ve watched it I wondered, if KJ is really laughing there as she watched BG trying to shove all of the marshmallows in her mouth. I think it may have been ad libbed. It’s not part of the script on smk-land.com. The scene is – verbatim – except for that last cute part.
