13/15 Season Three, Episode 17: The Eyes Have It- Scarecrow and Mrs King

We join Lee for surgery! lol..
lol all I can think is Lee looks a bit like a nun.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002355021_thumb
Dr Kessler
: Pulse is down to 45, respiration slow. BP is 100 over 60 and dropping.3.17 TEHI.avi_002355755_thumb
Dr Scardelli: Give another 12.5 grans of mannitol, IV bolus.
We see Billy and Amanda watching through glass doors. lol.. umm not a very airtight operating theatre..
Dr Goldberg joins them to watch.
[LOL where did Billy come from all of a sudden? I guess maybe when Lee collapsed he was called in? ]
3.17 TEHI.avi_002358788_thumb
Dr Goldberg: I came as soon as I heard. How’s he doing?
Billy: Not good.
Amanda: I never should have let him get out of bed. [It’s where he belonged!]
Billy: You can’t blame yourself, Amanda.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002364664_thumb
Nurse: BP dropping fast. I’m not getting a pulse.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002365765_thumb
Dr Scardelli
: Damn.
Amanda:  What’s the matter? What’s wrong?
3.17 TEHI.avi_002370904_thumb
Dr Goldberg
: He’s in ventricular fibrillation. His heart can’t maintain a steady beat.
Nurse: I’m not getting a pulse.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002375675_thumb
Dr Scardelli: Let’s shock him. Give me 300 joules.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002377877_thumb
We cut to Amanda.. looking pretty darn upset. Boooo Poor Amanda!!! Will Lee make it? I mean how awful to be standing right there watching all this take place!!! (ahem)
3.17 TEHI.avi_002378978_thumb
Dr Scardelli: Clear. (they zap Lee)
Dr Kessler
: Nothing.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002380814_thumb
Dr Scardelli: Push it up to 360. Clear.
Dr Kessler: BP nil.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002391458_thumb
Dr Scardelli: We’re losing him.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002391825_thumb
Amanda
: No!!
3.17 TEHI.avi_002392192_thumb
Nurse: Flatline.
Dr Scardelli 5 cc’s of epi stat. [Heck. give me some too!!]
(Dr Scardelli injects Lee in the chest with epinephrine..)
3.17 TEHI.avi_002397330_thumb
Dr Scardelli: No effect…. An amp of bicarb. And cut that speaker.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002407465_thumb[Kudos Bitsy Beans for transcribing all this! Phew!!]
(bicarb is injected into IV. Everyone is silent and waits.. looking for a sign Lee is going to make it..)

Kessler silently shakes his head.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002411511_thumb
Amanda gasps and looks all round devastated.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002413713_thumb
Billy looks.. umm.. quietly pensive?
3.17 TEHI.avi_002416282_thumb
Dr Goldberg looks.. I don’t know what.. calm?! He certainly doesn’t seem to care that Lee is dead and Amanda is suffering. Rot Dr Goldberg! You’ll get yours!
Lee is dead????!!!!!
Okay.. this has gotta be a dream.
Lee is about to wake up back at his apartment with that file sitting on his chest, and Amanda sitting in his lounge room drinking coffee out of his favourite mug.. yes that’s it. I can see it now.
Lee will wake, and realising he is still alive, he’ll  seize the moment and take Amanda in his arms
head slap emoticon  umm.. sorry.. where was I?
Lee’s dead. ahem.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002420320_thumb
I must say, he’s looking quite pink for someone dead. ahem.
Dr Scardelli unhooks the breathing tube fixed to Lee’s mouth and they cover him over.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002422522_thumb
Amanda watches breathing heavily.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002423623_thumb
Amanda (quietly): No.
Billy approaches Amanda to comfort her
3.17 TEHI.avi_002432432_thumb
No!!
(Billy and Amanda leave the room)
LOL it occurs to me this is the second time Billy has comforted grieving Amanda at Lee’s ‘death’ ahem..
Dr Evil Murderer Goldberg looks on.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002441241_thumb
Whooo I detect a little moody evil guyliner there!
He picks up a telephone and dials…
Goldberg: Mr Brody….I have good news for you.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002451518_thumb

I guess Goldberg is thinking Lee has died from the head injury rather than from his drug he slipped him? or heck.. maybe the drug…whatev – Lee is dead. and for Goldberg it’s party time…
The scene ends there..

Does anyone remember seeing this for the first time and not knowing what would happen? Care to share?

We cut again to an exterior shot of Parker General hospital. Lol this time they’ve reused the very first shot we saw of the hospital.. same nurse in the doorway.. and they’re always leaving around those two wheelchairs! Such waste!
3.17 TEHI.avi_002458625
Inside, we find a man reading the paper..
3.17 TEHI.avi_002458858
It’s Brody. Oh joy. 3.17 TEHI.avi_002460527
LOL that the paper has no front page.
He folds the newspaper and addresses someone approaching him off camera.
Brody: Thank you, doctor. I knew I could count on you.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002462562

Okay everyone- ROFL!!! Sooooo who saw people we recognise in the newspaper as he folded it and put it away??!!!! whahahahaa..
Did anything in this newspaper catch your eye?! [yes another eye pun]
3.17 TEHI.avi_002462362
– I(eye) spy Bart Stoller and Colleen Donnelly- the Reporters from Flight to Freedom! Smile

We actually see this newspaper here:

Post 4 of Flight to Freedom.. it’s where Bart thinks Colleen is dead.
Haa haaaa this find tickles my funny bone err not that Bart thought Colleen was dead – but because here is Brody, the evil baddie reading the newspaper from months ago haaaa.. and he sells information? whahahahaaa! this amuses me!
Anyway.. sorry I digress! where was I..

Goldberg and Brody move away from the waiting room area to do their devious stuff around the corner. LOL at Brody motioning so casually to the desk there like he owns the place.. 3.17 TEHI.avi_002468535
no one is looking at him haaaa..
3.17 TEHI.avi_002471538
Goldberg: why are we doing this here?
Brody: Quite frankly, a precaution. You’ve been a bit difficult to predict recently and I didn’t think you’d be too bold right here in your own back yard.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002477844
Goldberg
: You don’t have to worry about me or Stetson. Is that for me? (Goldberg motions to a briefcase Brody is holding)
Brody: Certainly….
(The two men swap brief cases.)

And congratulations. Everything is going according to plan.
Goldberg: Yeah your plan. I wish I would’ve never gotten involved with you. I should have taken my chances with Medical Licensing Board…
[Oh booo hoooo.. yes another baddie full of regrets but doing nothing. wimp]
…Now, you’ve got the other lens. Get out of my life and out of my hospital.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002498565[I love how he says I never should have gotten involved with you – as he hands over the other lense. super wimp
We see Brody react to Goldberg’s disgust. Me thinks he has created this reaction in people many times before Winking smile ]
3.17 TEHI.avi_002500667
And he certainly seems nonplussed!
With the camera still on cool as a cucumber Brody – we hear Lee’s voice:
Lee: I think we can arrange that….
3.17 TEHI.avi_002502168
The two baddies look up across the way..
3.17 TEHI.avi_002502469
Lee (in plaid?!) was sitting across the other side of the waiting room listening in.
Oh hooray! Lee is not dead? well Yippeeeeeee!!!!!!
Lee is born again- In plaid!
[okay – who really thought he was? come on!! fess up!!!! err yeah.. okay- me neither! Smile ]
3.17 TEHI.avi_002503636
Not only is Lee alive: He’s packing heat!
3.17 TEHI.avi_002504270
…You boys look like you’ve seen a ghost. I’ll have to compliment the surgical team on their fine acting.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002506740
[LOL- Love the pose with the hand in the pocket there Lee!]We see Billy is on the South side of the waiting room.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002507574
Amanda is on the north side. rofl! So helpful to orientate us Winking smile
3.17 TEHI.avi_002508775
Brody pulls a gun out of his jacket and aims it at Goldberg.
3.17 TEHI.avi_002509642
Brody: You move and I blow him away. [Meh no loss. ahem..] …Then I start firing at random… [Oh purlease Lee would have dropped you before you could shoot anyone else after Goldberg  Winking smile ]
3.17 TEHI.avi_002511878
Lee thinks about it. Drop gun? no drop the gun? laaa dee daaa..
3.17 TEHI.avi_002514981
Brody calmly: …Drop the gun.
[I think Brody does have a quiet menacing quality which makes for a good baddie.. what do you all think?]

Lee drops his gun to the floor. [lol that’s quite a clunk!]
3.17 TEHI.avi_002519252
Brody immediately pushes Goldberg in the direction of Lee and runs off. Lee picks up his gun and chases after Brody leaving Billy to arrest Goldberg. 3.17 TEHI.avi_002524591
Oh come on! Amanda could keep him under control – Billy is leaving Lee to deal with Brody alone? even though he is not well?? I mean he does still actually have a head injury doesn’t he?!
Oh well.. Lee must face the baddie alone I guess.

Oh dear.. this post is getting big.. now we know Lee (phew) is not dead, I think we’ll pause here for a moment – I can’t wait to hear what you all think!!!!! Hellooo Hellooo!!
Do jump in and say hi and share your thoughts. And thanks for reading! Smile

  1. I fell for it till he started to flatline and then I was like “Oh you jerks!” LOL

I think Amanda knew. She would have seen the file and she said that he had been having headaches when we never saw that onscreen.

  2. I watched this episode back in the 80s. I was a teenager. I seem to remember that they really had me going with the Lee is dead thing. I couldn’t believe it. How could they let Lee die on the operating table? I was very upset and then very relieved that it was an act. I’ve wondered though how they pulled off the shocking his heart scene and made it look believable for the baddie doctor. I think Amanda had to be in on it. I think she would have reacted much worse if she had thought it was real. Just my thoughts.

  3. I’ve also debated about whether Amanda knew or not, and finally concluded, for several reasons, that she must have been in on the plan the whole time.
    1. She HAS actually been through Lee’s death before, not to mention the countless near-death experiences and all the times her imagination has surely gone there. So I’m sure all that would’ve helped her play the part convincingly.
    2. The only thing she said through the whole thing was “No”. It’s extremely powerful in its simplicity, but it’s also very convenient if you don’t really trust yourself to say or do much else…no real lines to remember.
    3. At this point in their…um…”friendship”, it would’ve been downright CRUEL of Lee to put her through thinking he really was dead. And I just don’t think that fits his character.
    4. Amanda looked extremely calm and professional as she peeked around the “north” wall. While there was obviously a slight time lapse, I still just don’t think she could’ve pulled herself together that fast if she’d thought it was real. Heck, given how convincing she was, she probably needed every bit of that time lapse to pull herself together even knowing it was all an act!
    5. It was never mentioned again. If she hadn’t been in on it, Amanda would’ve expressed her joy and relief to Lee that he was still alive and then probably threatened to kill him herself for putting her through that…AGAIN!
    6. And because I’m really good at overthinking things and reading way too much into what’s probably nothing, I also noticed on rewatching that she was remarkably calm when he collapsed, didn’t grab the gurney, and didn’t walk all the way down the hall holding his hand this time 😉

    1. Hiya Geobear! have you commented on JWWM before? I’m thinking your handle looks familiar.. ?? Well either way – welcome! 🙂
Loved your comments.. I’m with you – if Lee had not shared this plot with Amanda I think that would have been a mighty big red flag saying: don’t go near him Amanda!!!!!!!!

But.. err you put it so much more eloquently and btw – if this is you over thinking things.. do please share your over thinking with us more often 🙂

      1. Thanks for the welcome. I’ve commented SOMEWHERE before, a couple years ago when I was rewatching the majority of the series. It could’ve been here or it could’ve been on another SMK site. I don’t remember without digging back into my emails to look it up.

And I only consider my last point to be overthinking. The rest is just good, plain common sense 😉

        1. Hi Geobear! I enjoyed your plain common sense! 🙂
I think I had assumed Amanda was in on it, but hadn’t stopped to unpick really why that was the assumption I made.. but your comment outlined well the reasons why!
I enjoy that about this walk with all you guys.. those little moments where we don’t even really realise what we’ve thought get revealed 🙂

  4. This is what I love about this blog, you notice the pictures of the people in the newspaper and the fact that it doesn’t have a front page. And I love the way you reveal Brody, “Its Brody. Oh joy” hahaha.
And only Lee can look handsome and menacing in PJs and a plaid flannel bathrobe. Hehehe.

    1. I totally agree, morley. I’ve seen this episode lots of times, but I never noticed Colleen Donnelly and Bart Stoller in the newspaper either. Good catch, iwsod! 🙂

  5. I, too, was one of those who fell for this scene when I first saw it. I was like ‘Wait!…What!…This can’t be right”. Thank goodness it wasn’t. Sometimes I’m still unsure as to what Amanda knew or not. I’m quite sure that she did because considering how she’s been throughout this episode I’m thinking she would have fainted or collapsed.

If I can find it or remember it there is a fanfic about this particular scene and I’ll post it over on Ned’s. This had to take quite a bit of time to set up. And they had to use and OR to do so and everyone had to stay in character.

Brody’s comment to Goldberg makes it seem like he thinks Goldberg actually killed Lee. I wonder what Goldberg actually told Brody about Lee’s supposed death.

  6. Wow….that’s some pretty intense acting from Amanda. They must have clued her in…..any other scenario just seems too cruel.
Goldberg…..slightly surprised he chose to ring his contact right outside the room where the man he potentially murdered just died. Seems callous and a bit cavalier to be honest. What if another agent had heard him……
I guess plaid is the right disguise. Hospital decor is probably much easier to blend in with if you look like a granny blanket lol
Glad to see Lee had time to fix his hair 😉

    1. I think Amanda knew what was happening, but she had to reach into how she would feel if something like that really did happen in order to stay in character. But I bet she didn’t have to reach far, I think worrying that there might come a time at any moment that she might not see Lee again alive was somewhat familiar to her ever since she saw him in that parking garage at the beginning of this episode.

  7. I’m a little embarrassed to admit I completely fell for this one too. Amanda was so convincing. Lee was dead. But how could that be? My mind was thrown into a tizzy trying to figure out how they could continue on with the series if Lee was dead. He couldn’t be. But he was! I saw it happen! I was in shock for a few seconds. Surely Lee and Billy wouldn’t do that to Amanda. Who would play Scarecrow? That commercial break was excruciatingly long. I knew Lee had to be alive, but I could not figure out how they could bring him back to life. Of course, I felt like an unimaginative idiot as soon as Lee miraculously came back to life in the next scene.

That is too funny about the newspaper. If only Brody remembered that Bart and Colleen were thought dead but weren’t, then he might have been clued in that Lee wasn’t really dead and been ready for Lee. You shouldn’t believe everything you read in the paper.

So I wonder if Amanda knew this was an act? She was pretty convincing. I can see the why they would want to keep her in the dark, but I can’t believe at this point that Lee and Billy would put her through that. I guess Lee doesn’t feel the need to compliment Amanda and Billy to Brody and Goldberg. I guess that would be kind of silly – they’re agents and supposed to be able to pull off covers and lie and stuff. It was a lot harder for the docs and nurses to let Lee fake his death.

Gosh, that hospital wallpaper is hideous. And I think it’s funny that they are apparently in the Pediatrics section of the hospital? Where are the kids? The families? It says Pediatrics Visiting Hours on the plaque on the nurses’ station right where Lee gets up from his chair. That seems a bit odd. Or maybe this is the general waiting area and the sign is special for peds?

    1. I was also fooled 😁 and that was only a few years ago as well 😐 of course i knew he wasnt really dead but i totally believed the whole collapse and operstion thing. I actually remember feeling so sorry for Amanda having to be convinced Lee died (of course she must have been in on it ). Now i find it incredible that a hospital would having viewing windows to an operating room.

    2. Same here. I wonder if my “No’s” were as loud as Amanda when I first watched it. That broke my heart to hear her reaction and we had no idea if these two would get it together and admit how they actually felt. Or at least, I didn’t.

I’m undecided over whether or not Amanda knew. She was almost too convincing for me to think she was in on this. It does bother me that they’d put her through that. Great acting by both BB and KJ, though.

      1. I think the fact she’s in on the waiting room surveillance a few frames later means she was in on it – which in and of itself is such a sign of how much more she is accepted by both Lee and Billy as being one of their own that of course* she’d be part of the fake death scheme.

        1. I guess when I posted, I wondered how much time had lapsed between when the surgery scene took place and when we see the Goldberg/Brody scene, but you’re right. What I wrote doesn’t make sense. All I can offer is that I did hit my head on a cabinet earlier today. 😉

    3. I certainly hope Amanda knew! How cruel if she didn’t! Regarding her “acting” at seeing the scene in the operating room, it’s probably all too easy for her to imagine Lee dying in this type of scenario and how she would react. It’s probably something she’s been giving more than a little thought to as she and Lee become closer.

      1. Loved this 2goldens.. this is the conclusion I came to also..

I think the whole play acting thing here would have been challenging for Amanda to undertake – given her new very strong and real emotions for Lee now!!

I do think after her reaction to Remembrance of things past- Lee would never do that to her again! That was only when they were friends.. not even really close friends 😉 but now? If Lee tried that I think it would be wise of Amanda to have second doubts about moving forward!!!! but nah.. Lee sees Amanda as totally on board and capable of dealing with this..

so it’s an indicator of how much he respects and values her.

but at the same time – LOL that Amanda sure can act! 😉 if they had Amanda acting (whooo like when Karen was acting as Amanda) it may not have been convincing enough to convince the audience – I think they were aiming for that.. not just convincing Dr Goldberg.

It’s probably something she’s been giving more than a little thought to as she and Lee become closer.

        whoooo yes.. it may indeed!!!!

  8. I think BB deserves an Emmy here for doing a convincing tough as nails agent routine in that heinous plaid dressing gown and hospital issue pyjama set. It’s hard to be dressed like such a square and still be cool. Lee gets a pass by the Fashion Police for maintaining his dignity in the face of the most egregious sins of the SMK wardrobe department. 😎

    1. You are so right. He is so convincing that i never wondered until now why hehad to keep his ‘sick’ cover up to this extent. Mind you i often wondered why they didnt take more agents!

  9. kiwismh knew that Lee wasn’t dead first time around in the 80’s ’cause there was another episode coming up the following week starring “BB”. 😀 Still, it was disturbing back then to contemplate SMK (and Amanda) without Lee.
However, many years later kiwismh doesn’t waste time contemplating, she just enjoys a scene featuring Lee with his shirt off. Okay, he’s comatose (or pretending to be) and getting all sorts of nutty medical treatment, but shirtless Lee scenes are rare enough that I’ll take what I can get regardless of the circumstances. 😉

  10. We may not be able to see his legs, but I do prefer Lee’s plaid dressing gown to his brief, but beige, “Lee” (and it’s matching “She”) gown.

  11. When I watched this scene for the first time, I was absolutely appalled – I didn’t think Lee would actually die (this isn’t “Grey’s Anatomy” after all) but I thought he had genuinely collapsed. It was horrible…
Plus, I still can’t believe Amanda’s reaction was feigned. Did she actually know that Lee was actually going to “die” or just that he’d be “taken ill”? What do other people think?
(Great performance by KJ 🙂 )

This scene is another one that grates on me in terms of the “medical” detail:
Pulse is down to 45, respiration slow. BP is 100 over 60 and dropping.
You know exactly what his pulse and BP are but just that his respiration is “slow”. Pulse not Heart Rate?? and the nurse can’t “find” his pulse, with a ventilator and loads of flashy medical flashy equipment to detect his heart rate?
Ignore me….focus on Amanda, not on the so-called medical staff and my whinging.

    1. IDK…I can’t believe Lee and Billy would do that to her again, especially at this stage – she’s no longer a rookie. She’s pretty good at playing a cover.

  13. Oh, how I hated watching this for the first time!! I was thinking in the same way as Amanda ‘Nooo – Lee simply can’t be dead!’ And additional my thoughts were ‘There’s another episode coming up next week. They can’t let Amanda do it on her own, they can’t let the male main character die – no now after those two came so close…’ I simply hated it.

Sorry I didn’t comment on any of this eps’ posts but I’ve been busy. I rewatched S1 and parts of S2 and I got some company – my almost 20 year old daughter decided to watch SMK (in English – although with that darn subtitles – it’s easier for her to understand that way). She likes it especially the slow development of Lee’s and Amanda’s relationship. She already knows that they get married one day. 🙂
And she should be hired by ‘The Agency’: She manges to recover the baddies and solve the case even before Amanda does.

    1. Cover eyes, cover ears…please don’t jump ahead of where we are on the blog, Lee&Amanda. I’m impressed with your daughter’s spy solving skills, but let’s make sure they involve only the current post or earlier ones. I know what you mentioned isn’t a surprise to anyone, but it may encourage others to talk about future things, and that’s not how JWWM operates! No worries, we’ve all done it, but please keep it in mind going forward!

I was sure Lee wasn’t dead when I first saw this, but I wasn’t sure at first whether Amanda knew it right away or not. Looks like she’s a pretty good actress! 🙂
