3/15 Season Three, Episode 19: The Boy Who Could Be King- Scarecrow and Mrs King

Hi Everyone.. the fun continues!
Lee exits the coat elevator.. 3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000424124
Lee: Hello Mrs Marston.
Mrs Marston: Amanda King’s been trying to reach you.
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000429329
Lee: I’ll bet she has.
Lee starts climbing the stairs..
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000433133
[I’m worried. Mrs Marston has a baddie phone.]
Amanda suddenly enters.
Amanda: Good morning, Mrs Marston and…
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000435535
(without pausing she addresses Lee)
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000436136
don’t you say anything that might make me say something that I would soon regret.3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000440140
Amanda says with a sweet smile.. lol.. but she is mighty annoyed.. 3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000440340
and.. Lee knows her well enough to know this..
He goes to say something…
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000441541
and rethinks it..
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000441759
Hmmm how to deal with this one?
Ah! I know.. avoidance!
As Lee walks back down the stairs –
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000443943
-we  can see at the top of the shot, the shadow of the sound boom moving out of the way. LOL I think they had a work experience kiddie holding the sound boom this week of production!3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000445679
Lee: You know, I have never understood that expression. If you’re mad enough to say it, why should you regret it huh??
Oh no. Lee going for cute isn’t going to cut it!
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000447480
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000448682
Amanda:
Well let me just tell you something…3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000450083
…I have a property tax bill that’s going to be due in a few days, 3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000453953
…my lawnmower and my station wagon have made a suicide pact with each other, and my two small boys…
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000456489
[Flippin hilarious! Amanda holds her fingers up to show how small her boys are Winking smile
Oh my gosh! Look how small they are! whahahahaWinking smile Hold on to that Fisher Price toy phone a little longer Amanda! 😉 Why is it I can imagine Amanda saying this very same thing in ohhh about 20 years time?!]
…are going to have to put their tiny little goldfish on the auction block,…
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000458892
[Love how everything is exaggerated.. the fish are not small or tiny.. or little. they’re tiny little!]
…all because somebody who was supposed to give me a ride to the bank this morning to see the loan officer, forgot to pick me up.
(We can see Lee nodding his head throughout.)
[Hmmm maybe the ID phrase here needs to be ‘Hold me’!
Interesting Amanda assumes Lee forgot. He didn’t forget. He had a run in with the boys and girls in blue Winking smile ]
Lee: I’m sorry…
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000467500
…Look, why don’t you try the Agency credit union?
[There’s an agency credit union? oh boy.. I bet it’s right up there with the agency insurance company.. don’t go there Amanda! Baddies will infiltrate it eventually!]
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000469302
Amanda: They won’t give me a loan—
Lee: Better rates.
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000470503
Amanda: —you have to be a full-time agent.3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000472105
Lee: We could work it out. [Yeah! make her full time!]
Amanda: Oh, come on!
Lee (quietly and calmly): I’ll co-sign.
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000474307
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000475508
Amanda is visibly taken aback.
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000475975
There’s silence for a moment…
And Amanda, realising where they are and that they have an audience looks down at Mrs Marston taking in the whole show!
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000476910
Mrs Marston looks from Lee, 3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000477310
to Amanda – 3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000477977
with a : Wow!!! well how about that??!!!
kind of reaction! Smile Who knew Mrs Marston would be a romantic Winking smile
Amanda turns back to Lee.
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000478712
Amanda: You would?
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000479512
Lee: Yeaaaah,..
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000479913
…I sure would.3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000480914
Amanda: Well, thank you very much—
Lee: But!
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000481514
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000482916
[lol Amanda looks like she could burst!]
…I can’t do it right now… 3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000483983
…I’ve got a little ID check to make…
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000487987
…See this fella here? As of right now he is a John Doe.3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000488722
Amanda: Oh. [rofl. how could anyone be ID’d based on that photo?! Do you recognise these nostrils???!!!]
Lee: Now, none of the agencies have anything on him, but we’ve got three leads, so follow me. I could use your help.
[‘I could use your help’ sounds like it was added post production.. IMHO. The side of his face doesn’t move when he talks and it sounds really different! I must say.. I like this addition and am glad they added it! After last week’s episode  ‘follow me’ would be a bit jarring! ]
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000493727
Lee starts to walk off. but Amanda stays put. Instead she points to him stating matter of fact: You have lipstick on your face. 3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000496730
Lee: What?
Amanda: Lipstick, yeah.
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000497931
Lee: Oh, ah —
[Bashful Lee tries to wipe it off his cheek]
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000500734
(Lee starts making his way back up the stairs..
Amanda takes a guest pass [GRRRRR] off Mrs Marston)
Amanda: Thank you very much, Mrs Marston.
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000503269
Amanda follows Lee up the stairs.
Lee: Ah, really,…
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000504871
…it’s very innocent.
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000506272[I love how Mrs Marston continues to watch on in fascination!! Winking smile ]
It was something— well, it was a—
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000506873
Amanda
: It’s okay, it’s not your colour anyway.
[Good one Amanda! A few good one liners in this ep so far! Though LOL…Lee the trannie… the stuff of nightmares for us fans who swoon over Lee]
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000507874
(hearing this Lee turns to look at Amanda pausing a little in their walk up the stairs..)
Amanda: Go ahead, go on.
(Amanda encourages Lee to not pause and keep going)
[ lol maybe she doesn’t want to have this conversation in front of Mrs Marston.. but then, maybe she should have waited to point out the lipstick Winking smile ]
She seems to flick Lee on his lower back with her guest pass to keep him moving forward up the stairs.
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000508274
I can’t get a clear shot.. I think it’s his lower back.. what do you think?
Kiwismh noted when transcribing- Amanda “ taps him on backside with her name tag – never noticed that before!” Can you see it?

Ahhh what fun things we can notice when transcribing. If this isn’t good motivation to do some transcribing I don’t know what is haaaaa Winking smile

Kiwismh also noted “This last dialog re the lipstick wasn’t in the script either. Ad-libbed maybe?”

I think it flows on well from the previous scene Smile

Before we completely move on from this foyer scene I’ll just add.. 3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000510076

Interesting to see there are now landscapes on the walls rather than a gallery of old white guys who were somehow important to the spy biz. Shouldn’t there be movie posters or documentary awards or something? I guess this isn’t the main entrance.. but still..

So moving on to the Guest Lodge Apts.3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000510477
We see Crowley meeting up with some beige guy. 3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000524024
Crowley: The gun man was a pro. A freak accident killed him.
Beige guy: My sources indicate that was a very clumsy action to take, Crowley. Moscow is not happy.
[Ohhhhhh Moscow again huh!]
Crowley: Moscow is halfway around the world. I’ve got bigger problems right here.
Beige guyovski: Your only problem is eliminating that ludicrous King of yours. If there’s tantalum beneath Cap D’Far, we want control of the entire island without King Edmund on the throne.
[Tantalum???? Noooo really? Tantalum??!!!! wow!!!! umm.. what’s tantalum? something worth money I guess.. a metal? Is it real? anyone? ]
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000534034
Crowley: Look, if the doctor’s diagnosis is correct, Eddie’s brain tumour will take care of him sooner or later.
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000538638[Oh no Eddie has terminal cancer?]
Beige guyovski: We insist on sooner. You know that.
Crowley: Later is better – trust me. It seems the King came to the States for more than the Jazz Festival and a CAT Scan.
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000556056
Beige guyovski
: Well, what are you saying? Does this affect our plan.
Crowley: No, Soriakhof, we’re following the same game plan but with a new wrinkle.
3.19 THE BOY WHO COULD BE KING.avi_000563563

Beige guyovski is Soriakhof.. ah it’s always more fun when we pick the names!
So this Crowley seems to be a no good double crossing Russian.. pretty ruthless stuff.. I wish he’d been more ruthless with his wardrobe. That shirt is hurting my eyes!

One last question…If Dotty ever got hold of the paperwork for her loan- How would Amanda ever explain to Dotty that a man named Lee Stetson had co-signed her loan?!  It’s all got a very ‘we’re married’ vibe here now doesn’t it! I think someone in comments of the last post said it had a very wifey kinda vibe. Sorry no time to check who it was I’ve gotta run.. – reveal yourself! 🙂 tee hee.. I thought the comment was a good call 🙂

Sorry I can’t be here much at the moment.. I’ll pause here for the moment.. looking forward to hearing your thoughts everyone who’d care to share – thanks for reading!!

  1. Bwahahaha! Mrs. Marsden has a baddie phone!

Love Lee’s face as he realizes he’s going to get a deserved earful from Amanda. Also love that he stands there like a man and takes it. But why doesn’t he tell her why he has lipstick on his face? What he says seem weird to me.

    1. hmm… Need to know BJo! maybe Lee couldn’t disclose the events to Amanda?
Plus, ahem.. he didn’t wind up super heroic from the sounds of it so maybe one he wants to keep to himself?! 🙂

I figure he had to tell Beaman because of what got into the transmitter.. tee hee

      1. I like the need to know. As much as I think Mrs. Marsden is a vault, I think she also may be a bit of a stickler for policy and protocol.

        1. I also like the idea of Lee not talking about it because it didn’t sound too heroic.
Someone needs to write some of Mrs. Marsden’s thoughts…

In this scene Lee and Amanda wear similar outfits, white shirts with big squares. What does that tell us? Should it tell us anything?

    1. When I was in college my roommate and I would often find that we had dressed similarly, even if one of us had left the room before the other had awakened. It was never planned. But I think it had to do with how well we had gotten to know each other. I can’t really explain it, but I wonder if it has something to do with being tuned into the other person and you all know I think the clothing we choose to wear reflects some sort of inner reality (there is a psychological element to clothing choices). So could it be that Lee and Amanda are spending so much time together that they have developed this sort of connection? See, I can read into anything 😀

      1. Yeah, that’s what came to my mind too, morley.
I would have compared it with the way some old (very old) couples dress after they have been married for 40 – 50 years or even more. 🙂

    2. It depends on how you look at the scene and situation. I think the wardrobe department often had Amanda and Lee in clothes that seemed to complement each other. I especially remember I Am Not Now… and how their attire was so well matched. But then I mentioned in an earlier post how Lee seemed to be wearing less suits and was less staid in attire and demeanor. Lee’s earlier attire was more like Francine whereas now he’s more like Amanda. I think it just shows how much more they have become connected.

  3. It occurs to me that the odd thing in this scene is that Lee – normally ever the gentlemen except for forgetting to say “Hello” – walks up the stairs ahead of her. We get the badge slap so no regrets, but he seems like the kid of guy who would normally follow a woman up, not the other way around.

    1. Haha – maybe he wanted a little more time to wipe that lipstick off his face while his back was to her? Or actually he seems to be acting a bit like a little boy who has just been scolded by his mother.

      1. Yeah I think it’s one of those moments where they’ve gone for cute comedy rather than any real logical sense 😉

Do I mind? Not really 🙂 at least they haven’t tried to hang a whole plot around it haaaa!

  4. Woohoo–I’m caught up (panting). I fell victim to RL back near the beginning of the previous episode, but here I am! I don’t think Mrs Marston would engage in water cooler gossip either. In her position she has to be very play-by-the-rules and only giving information on a need-to-know basis, and I think that would carry over into personal things as well. Nobody else has a need to know what she sees between Lee and Amanda!

  5. I found a baddie phone while cleaning out my in laws house. Now I am questioning the past 25 years of my life…

I love this scene in the foyer. There is miles of subtext there I think, and all in front of Mrs. Marsden and both Lee and Amanda know she is taking it all in and yet they still go for it. I wonder if Amanda is considering that Lee is still not totally committed to her? He still hasn’t said anything and yet she knows there is something there, she can sense that. I am sure she told Lee about this tax bill and her circumstances and he offered her that ride. They had a plan and then Lee doesn’t follow through and I think she is taking him to task with his understanding of what it would mean to be involved in her life. This is real concrete stuff, not something that he can offer to do and then be blown about by any wind that happens to blow. and the same time she does understand the nature of their job, the winds do blow. But her pointed finger and pointed words don’t let him sweep it under the carpet and I hear in Lee’s response that he has no plan to sweep it under the carpet. I think he is being cute, but he is also being honest and he wants her to know that he is being honest. If she is mad, he understands and he isn’t going to try to slip away from it. BUT, he is also 100% committed to her life and he is willing to put his name and credit behind it. And he says it without thought in front of Mrs. Marsden. That registers with Amanda and Mrs. Marsden. Those words of Lee’s are echoing all over that foyer and in Amanda’s heart me thinks. And then I love the little bit about the lipstick. She got him there with it and I love the way Lee is more worried about that than about anybody overhearing his offer of cosigning a loan. and then Amanda just sweeps it away. I don’t think she is too worried about Lee and the lipstick anymore. But, as much as I love this scene I just think its a bit too much of a leap right after Wrong Number. Somethings seem a bit too settled between them for right after that one… Just saying 😉

  7. This one of my favorite scenes of Lee and Amanda. I agree with the very marriage feel to it. Mrs. Mars ton seems very pleased for the both of them. I think she knows more about their relationship than most people, except Billy!

  8. This is a sweet scene. A turning point. Co-signing a loan is so much more meaningful that swoony glances IMHO. And almost a public expression of his commitment to Amanda – yes, I actually think that this is a commitment from him.
Regarding the letting Amanda vent – it’s a skill that Mr Jet is yet to learn after nearly 17 years of marriage. He still tries to “solve the problem”!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Oh yeah…, I know what you mean.
My hubby (after 25 years of marriage) does still
the same: Either he ignores it if it’s ‘not important enough’ (in his mind) or he tries ‘to solve the problem’.
Lee really is a quick learner here, is’ t he? 😀
Ohhh, I love him in this scene.

  9. Lee is definitely shaping up to be good husband material as he allows the trouble and strife (wife) to vent, then goes the extra mile by not only being understanding but diving headfirst into husband territory in offering to co-sign the credit union loan. 😀
Another one of my fave scenes and I like to think they the writer left KJ & BB to ad-lib the end of the scene around the lipstick gag.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Yeah, I like the way Lee lets Amanda vent, too. He might not understand the part about the boys auctioning off their “tiny little goldfish” because he wasn’t in on the conversation about that at Amanda’s house, but he lets her continue instead of interrupting to question it, like he used to. He knows Amanda and her family (indirectly) well enough to know there’s probably a reason for that comment, but it’s not really the most important issue.

The “small boys” comment threw me a little because, if I’ve got this right, Phillip is now 12 and Jamie is 10. When kids get into the double digits, I don’t tend to think of them as “small”, just “kids”. But, it makes sense if Amanda’s just being dramatic here for Lee’s benefit.

  10. Just taken from Wikipedia:

Tantalum is a chemical element with symbol Ta and atomic number 73. Previously known as tantalium, its name comes from Tantalus, an antihero from Greek mythology.[4] Tantalum is a rare, hard, blue-gray, lustrous transition metal that is highly corrosion-resistant. It is part of the refractory metals group, which are widely used as minor components in alloys. The chemical inertness of tantalum makes it a valuable substance for laboratory equipment and a substitute for platinum. Its main use today is in tantalum capacitors in electronic equipment such as mobile phones, DVD players, video game systems and computers. Tantalum, always together with the chemically similar niobium, occurs in the minerals tantalite, columbite and coltan (a mix of columbite and tantalite).

    1. It’s real?! I just assumed the writer made up some bogus element. It always pays to check these things. Thanks for the info Lee&Amanda.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I thought it was just made-up, too! The name doesn’t sound real. Then again, some of the other elements don’t sound real, either. Cool that you looked it up, Lee&Amanda! 🙂

  12. The trouble wit’ t’missus comment was me, and if that last post was giving off a married vibe, this one is giving off married tremors that are off the Richter Scale!

I love that he knows better than to interrupt her in mid-flow and just lets her get it all out before he tries to explain. He’s not too worried because he knows that once she knows why he wasn’t there, she won’t be mad at him anymore, but he sure sweetens the pot with that co-sign offer doesn’t he? And looks mighty relieved when he realizes it worked. Scarecrow does have a brain! Hurrah!

This is the scene that made me love Mrs. Marston -she has gone from being the scary watchdog to a kind of silent cheering section, hasn’t she? One has to wonder how many other conversations she’s heard as these two pass through, forgetting she’s hearing them that makes her look pleased but not at all surprised by this turn of events.

(Actually you don’t have to wonder – I wrote a fan fic with just this premise. But I digress.)

“Tiny little goldfish” is also one of my favourite Amanda lines in one of the all-time best Amandarambles. Is her gesture with the fingers showing how small her boys are or how small the fish are? Or both?

And lastly, I vote for backside tap – we know Amanda has form where Lee’s butt is concerned. 😀

      2. It’s a phrase that pops up in the UK a lot, Iwsod, mostly in police shows when it’s used to describe someone with a known criminal behaviour. It suggests someone you look at first for certain crimes because they have an established pattern of committing that crime. So when I say Amanda has form, I mean we all saw her grab his butt in Utopia Now, and I still don’t think it wasn’t on purpose!

I appreciate you explaining this! You thought I didn’t know what having form referred to- so I appreciate you helping me out 🙂
It looks like there are some who were not familiar with the concept of having form – I guess it’s one of those quirky phrases not universal to all who speak English. I find this hard to predict sometimes. Here’s a good reminder to us all – if you don’t know what something means feel free to ask – many of us are English speakers, but there’s regional differences that are fun to learn about- and no shame in not knowing! 🙂

That said, I think you’ve been pretty generous toward me – seems the conclusion was iwsod didn’t know what it meant to have form because she couldn’t forget Amanda touching Lee’s butt. Teee Heee! well errrr you guys.. I forgot about Amanda touching Lee’s butt!!! and I call myself an smk fan. I’m ashamed.. [err no not really just havin fun 🙂 ]

I’m familiar with the concept of having form, but great to see it’s been explored as others were not.
Ahhh this walk – we just never know what will come up 🙂

          1. Hi Janet,
I appreciate you explaining this, too!
If even not every English speaker is familiar with ‘having form’ how should we ‘Not-English-speakers’ know what it means…
So, a big THANK YOU, Janet, in the name of all ‘Not-English-speakers’. 😀

          2. I actually did think it was odd that you hadn’t heard it since most British stuff seems to have universally travelled amongst us Commonwealthers, but the downside of corresponding in written forms only does mean you run the risk of being taken literally! LOL

        4. I, for one, appreciated your explanation. I had no clue what “form” was referring to. I don’t know if that is because of my own ignorance or the fact that I am not much of an anglophile… but I am am grateful to now be all the more enlightened. Thanks 🙂

Brings some “deeper meaning” to “I’ve got your back.” huh? 😉
