4/19 Season Three, Episode 20: Dead Men Leave No Trails–Scarecrow and Mrs King

Next thing, we see the vette driving along a suburban street and hear Amanda..
Amanda: Okay, it’s got to be right along here… And that’s gotta be it, ‘cos that’s the car.
Lee: Uh-huh.
Amanda: Right there. This is it.
Lee pulls up the vette outside.

Great view of the vette here for any car fans!

They get out and head toward the house together. Birds are chirping away..

LOL I guess that report Lee had to do on the potential Gaddafi hit is not such a priority after all Winking smile

Amanda: That’s the car. [She tells us this twice. Note: Very important dumb audience! And the driver has no right to privacy! ]

Lee holds Amanda by the elbow as they approach. 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000506373
Lee: Heh, he could be the most surprised man in DC.
(Lee and Amanda walk up to the door and Amanda rings the doorbell. The door opens and a man in a bathrobe appears—the man looks nothing like Sallee.)
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000519185
Amanda: Hello. Is Mr. Jones here?
Mr. Jones: I’m him.
LOL Lee’s smile seems to be plastered on here. haaa he doesn’t seem to be use to making home visits Winking smile He’d maybe be more comfortable with sneaking in a side window? Winking smile
Amanda: Mr. Bolton Jones? 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000521388
Mr. Jones: You got him. 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000523189
Amanda: Oh. Well. I guess you weren’t driving, but I’m the one who hit your car. 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000527594
Mr. Jones: You hit my car? Where? 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000527794
Amanda: In front of the hardware store, yesterday.
Yesterday?????? I thought Amanda went into the agency after sending off Dotty and the boys, and getting her smash repair quote.. she didn’t go in till the next day??
Oh wait. No that’s not right! We saw Lee in this outfit in the meeting, then cut to Amanda having the car crash. Same day. Or..  Lee is wearing the outfit two days in a row, and who thinks that’s possible?? (unless he was trapped in a swap all night without a change of clothes?!). Me thinks this is a boo boo. If editing had put the car crash before the boring meeting this would have maybe made sense.. anyway.. moving on.. 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000536503
Mr. Jones: That car’s been sitting in the drive for weeks. I’m trying to sell it! Ad’s in the paper, an’ all. An’ I didn’t loan it, because I been sound asleep here since 6am. I work nights.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000545512
Amanda
: I’m awfully sorry to have to break this to you, but … I hit your car. It’s not a very big dent. If you’ll come with me, I’ll show you. [I don’t know about you, but I could slap Amanda. She hit his car? Like it’s all her fault?! And she doesn’t mention the driver was someone else and definitely not this guy??!!! You know.. We had an accident when one of your friends was driving your car?!  What the heck?]
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000548515
Together they walk over to Bolton’s car..
Amanda: Oh boy.
Right here, on thi-  …
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000558525(Amanda goes to point to the smashed up corner but.. it’s not smashed up!)3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000559926
…Well, that’s funny.
[
Here’s the car from earlier where Sallee drove it away from the accident.. doesn’t look like it had much damage anyway to me! 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000408575
This is the same car. I guess watching this on tv, we would not have paid close attention to the car, and couldn’t go back and check.. so at this point I’d be likely thinking maybe Amanda is mistaken. what do you think?]
Mr. Jones: Look, if you don’t mind, I, I’d like to get back to bed. This is ridiculous! 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000561528
Sleepy Jones leaves them to it. 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000566933
Amanda: Ooh, I’m sorry, Mr. Jones. I don’t understand this,..
Lee lets out a sigh. [All things considered, he’s pretty patient at this moment. Old Lee would have been flying off the handle by now.] 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000567934
Amanda reaches down to touch the corner, and aha! The paint comes off!
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000570937
….this is the car. And this paint is wet.
[There Lee, aren’t you glad you didn’t fly off the handle? Okay.. so it is the right car! Got it! Good one Amanda!]
Lee: Okay, okay. So, the guy doesn’t want you to know what he does with his car.
Amanda: Well…
Lee: Forget about it… keep the money.3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000576443
Amanda: Ugh. 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000579546
Lee: Look, I have got Zawoski’s welcome aboard coffee klatch at one. That is work, this isn’t.
[Rofl I thought he was going to say the Gadhafi report.. but no it’s the welcome thingy. I’ve never heard of a coffee klatch. Smk just edumacated me]3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000582248
Amanda: Okay. Why don’t you go back to the Agency, and I’ll just ask the neighbours a few questions.
[LOL I love how Amanda says this, happy.. la laaaa..] 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000585852
Lee: You’re not gonna help me with my speech,…
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000587253
…are you? 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000588455
Amanda: I’ll go over your notes,…
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000589055
…and I’ll take a cab when I’m through here…3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000589456. …Bye.3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000590256
[rofl she doesn’t wait for him to answer I love it haaaaaa]
Lee: Alright. [LOL  a little gruff but he’s not fighting her. LOL]
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000590457
Amanda
turns back to the mysterious car and says to herself: It’s wet paint.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000594461
[Yes Amanda. we the dumb audience remember it’s wet paint.] The scene ends here.. But before we leave it. I think Lee and Amanda should have been suspicious the moment this sleepy dude opened the door… why? They’ve seen Mr Sleepy before!

Here’s where we’ve seen him before!!!
2.22 MBF.avi_001202602
Anyone recognise it?
Maybe this image will help! 2.22 MBF.avi_001210610
Yep, this guy was one of Tucker’s bad guys in Murder Between Friends! You’d think he’d remember Amanda because he did try and frame her for murder no? Winking smile
BTW I didn’t pick this up completely randomly. I knew from IMDB this actor (Earl Billings) had been in both eps, but I didn’t know which character he was in either.. it’s fun to try and find them!
No! I won’t post an image of Tucker and his gang of baddies, because I don’t want to remember Joe King as Tucker lol.
2.22 MBF.avi_002597997
Here’s Billy strangling Mr Sleepy haaaa.. and enjoying it whaa haa haaaa.. good thing Billy didn’t come to his door haaa!

Okay! Moving on. Amanda’s alone in the suburbs and on a mission!
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000599466
Yep, this transition shot again!
Older woman: Let me think…
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000600667
…Black curly hair…
Amanda: Mmm-hmm.
Older woman: Tall… Oh.  That could be Millicent’s boarder.
Amanda: Millicent? 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000606473
Older man: I thought he was young and blond?
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000607874
Older
woman: Oh, no, he left six months ago. Try Millicent McDonald’s…3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000608675
We cut to Amanda.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000611478
…—across the street, the house with the big tree. 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000613880
Amanda: Thank you very much. 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000615882
[Clearly, if Sallee is hiding here in the suburbs, he has grossly underestimated the curiosity of his neighbours Winking smile ]
Older woman: Oh, you’re welcome.
Amanda: Bye-bye.
Older woman: Bye.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000618685
Amanda walks away, the older
man waves at Amanda, then the man and woman turn to each other looking very pleased with themselves for having been able to assist Amanda with their combined nosiness Winking smile 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000619886
And this little scene ends here.
Life’s so perfect in the suburbs.. surely there’s nothing amiss here with this guy Amanda is looking for?! Winking smile
I shall pause here for a moment too.. anything you’d like to share with us about this part of the ep or the ep so far??? I’ve been away the last few days, and will try to get back to respond to all the fabulous comments when I can- hope you are all well and looking forward to hearing from ya!!!

That cracked me up, Iwsod!!!! 😂

Also, it used to kinda bother me that Amanda left Lee hanging on her end of the deal – friends doing favors for friends and all. But, now I’m starting to wonder if something hadn’t already been sending her intuition into a spin, even from the moment of the accident (or maybe she just figured out that it was the beginning of a new episode and this guy must be trouble if she’s crashing into him and he pays her with cash). She just seems so determined to find this man. I think her this-must-be-a-terrorist alarm has been going off since the Mario Andretti comment. 😉 Ok, maybe not. Just trying to give somebody some credit. (I’m just completely ignoring the time hole here with the accident and such because it’s one of my favorite episodes.😁)

Also, it cracks me up that these neighbors know so much, and that so much [nosy] neighborly-ness is a huge idea of SMK….But in Amanda’s neighborhood, there are no neighbors who happen to notice a handsome man that drives a silver sportscar and walks up Amanda’s driveway most nights to the back door (for 3 years now). Or happen to see her get kidnapped with her groceries in tow, or see LOTS of repair vehicles constantly surveilling the house when Lee puts the “best” people on her family… I mean, news of such magnitude would surely get back to Dotty at some point, riiiiiiight? 😉

      1. Mommynificent! I had an epiphany tonight while watching this episode! We both said that it bugs us that Amanda didn’t hold up her end of their bargain to help Lee with his speech. But! In watching it tonight, I realize that she ended up having to stay at Margaret’s, I mean, Millicent’s 😉 for seemingly awhile waiting for “Alan” to arrive. So I think she really did plan to help Lee- she even seems kinda rushed just before “Alan” gets there offering to give Millicent the money if he doesn’t arrive soon. I guess Amanda was just kind of in a bind and not able to leave as early as she’d hoped she could to get back and help Lee after all. Sainthood for Amanda is still in tact. 😁

  2. I was wondering if the reason they have Amanda say “Yesterday” was because the writers realized if it’s still the same day, Dr. Kroger…uh, Sallee would have to have a real good mechanic at hand who not only repairs the car, but has the right car paint at hand as well within just a few hours. This being on the next day maybe seemed more feasible to them.

  3. Me, me! I love the vette! I still want a ride in one of that model.

Have we seen Mr. Bolton Jones before? He reminds me of one of the baddies in Murder Between Friends. I’ll have to check. Hang on…yup, it’s him. He throws a pretty mean star.

Oh too funny…Amanda is the boss of Lee here. You go back to the Agency and I’ll check around the neighborhood because we all know the less time Lee spends in a neighborhood the better. He’s changing, but not by that much yet!

Oops! I see it hit you that we’ve seen Mr. Jones before as well. Amanda’s hair looks really pretty here. No wonder Lee is falling for her. Hahaha – EVERYONE in the spy biz underestimates the power of the neighbors and the neighborhood!

  4. This little visit from Lee and Amanda here reminded me of that time they took meatloaf to that princess. Was that in season 1? I think Lee was marveling then at Amanda’s funny, neighborly ways. Now he seems to be familiar with them and I think he loves them, even though her timing may be off (that is work, this isn’t). There is just such sweet familiarity and comfort with each other now. They really know each other’s ways now, don’t they?

    1. Yup – so much so that he’s willing to let her work her “magic” in the neighborhood. This is her home turf and he knows if there is anything to find about Sallee in this neighborhood, Amanda will find it. I think he also knows that if she doesn’t find anything, she may be more willing to drop it.

  5. I laughed at the term, “coffee clatch”, because I’ve said it for years, it was one of my mother’s famous terms…she also used the term, ” Hen Party” which was a get together for women to eat and gossip!! Funny.

  6. Nothing of substance to really add here. I just wanted to comment.

I had a couple of neighbors once who lived across the street and sat on the porch all day long. They could tell you everything that happened during the day. Some people found them annoying or nosey, but they were like the security detail for the neighborhood, because they would notice if something odd or peculiar happened or if a stranger approached your house. They were two older sisters and just wanted occasional attention. I found them invaluable and they were a free security system. They always kept a close eye on my house. Millicent’s neighbors remind me of them. They also remind me of my dad and stepmother who have nothing better to do and this is like a big event for them to keep up with the happenings at church and in the neighborhood. I usually get an update and an earful when I visit.

  7. I did find it uncharacteristic of Amanda not to do Lee’s speech for him, but maybe she found the freedom of letting Jamie do his own science project and is just thinking it will be good for Lee. Why couldn’t he just use the other guy’s notes? I do think it’s funny that Amanda dismisses Lee and is confident that she can investigate on her own..she’s came a long ways!!!

Seems like Mr. Jones would have been a little more concerned that his car could have been stolen and returned, especially sense she had his license plate number, which I think Amanda could have went to the police or maybe even the DMV and got the name and address of the plate number.

I think the curiosity of neighbors is everywhere whether in the suburbs or country…I’ve lived both places.

    1. Haha – good point, Melissa, but I think Amanda may be wisening up. She should just tell him she’ll write his whole speech and give it if she can get rid of the visitor pass for a real one.

  8. Could you imagine that little exchange between Lee and Amanda about her not helping him with the speech in season one or two? And she just waves him away and says “bye.” In my mind this episode can come after The Boy who could be King, but that is a remarkable thing for Amanda to do after being so wrapped up in Lee’s arms just a few night earlier. It interesting to think about… Not sure what I am thinking, but I am thinking about it 😉

  9. I think this is totally Amanda to want to give the money back, I would do the same thing. Also, they never iterated whether she ASKED Lee to help her with the actual legwork of tracking “Mr. Andretti” down, I can totally see Amanda being all like “I got this” and Lee insisting on coming with her, or just … going with her because he is concerned about her being out there on her own, because there is always a danger factor when talking to strangers … even is suburbia 😉

  10. lol…More beige! Beige bathrobe on Mr. Jones, the older man is in beige and Lee still has that beige jacket on.

IWSOD…., I thought the accident happened same day as the meeting too. I didn’t even notice she said ‘yesterday’ as she spoke to Mr. Jones, until I read this post. I watched the full episode about a week ago. Lee also said that speech was given ‘every other Monday for the past 10 years.’ That led me to think the boys and Dotty were leaving on a Monday and the meeting was also on a Monday. Why would they go to a science fair on a Sunday?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Well, on second thought, maybe a science fair could happen on a Sunday. Where I’ve lived in the past decade, things sort of come to a halt on a Sunday. Pretty sure I went on some school-related trips (back in the day) that included Sundays.

    2. Also, this little exchange got me thinking … just how old IS that dude Lee is filling in for if he has “given the same speech every monday for the last teo decades”? And he is having a kid??? or was it maybe his first grandkid or something? I have always broken my head trying to work out the math on that little detail hahaha.

      2. Depending on when he started with the agency, some men become fathers around age 40-50 (we won’t talk about Mick Jagger…lol). Anyway, maybe his role in the agency is to give speeches and do mostly admin type work. He probably wears a lot of beige too. 😉

I liked Melissa R’s idea.. maybe this is baby number 5 for Zowalski??

I was thinking, it’s interesting the writer chose to go with a new baby as a reason why Zowalksi wasn’t around.. they could have just had him out with the flu.
Why did they go with this? ideas anyone?
whooooo is Zowalski’s new baby the link that ties the baddie & case of the week together?! whahahaahaha..

          1. Zowalski had to have a baby because this is Lee still working on intersecting with “normal”, at least that is what I think. More agent type people with some normal in their lives.

Ok, metal gymnastics… the boys and Dottie had to leave on Sunday to get there. The fair starts on Monday morning, bright and early. And maybe that first scene with Amanda in the red shirt wasn’t early morning? Oh heck, maybe we just suspend imagination and wrinkle the calendar time a bit. Madeleine L’Engle did it, A Wrinkle in Time was one of my favorite books when I was Jamie’s age).

  11. Oooh, nice shot of the Corvette. Not to belittle Lee’s obvious charm, but the Corvette definitely adds to his appeal. 😉 And while Lee’s encased head to toe in beige, it’s definitely good to have the car’s silver finery to divert the eye.
I imagine Jones spends most of his off-work hours keeping that creeper covering the verandah posts from getting totally out of control and engulfing the house.
Never heard of the word “klatch” before. I had to look it up – apparently it’s a word of North American origin meaning an informal social gathering at which coffee is served.
That old couple crack me up – how they look at each other and grin after Amanda leaves. You almost get the feeling they’re up to no-good. Baddie oldies?
Like how Amanda has the bit between her teeth and is doing her own informal investigation on her mysterious car crash. Lee has to take a back seat. I like how she maintains a level head and a certain amount of independence despite her attraction to Lee. Maybe like Billy she also knows it is important for Lee to develop the patience and the aptitude to do less action-orientated tasks.

    1. Coffee klatch

In German we know it as ‘Kaffeeklatsch’. It’s a meeting/gathering of people (usually mostly elderly women) at the home of one of those participants where coffee (and cake) is serverd and they exchange the newest gossip everyone got to know about everybody and everything.
A short form of Kaffeeklatsch (just minus the coffee) can also take place at the street or during shopping while meeting a neighbor. ‘Klatsch’ is the German word for ‘gossip’.
It’s quite similar to the water cooler gossip in English.

      1. It’s basically the same thing here in the US. 🙂 We borrowed the term from German, and it still implies that a group of people, mainly women, get together for coffee and gossip. Although, when I picture it, it’s usually mothers of school-age children who get together during the day before their kids get home from school.

That Lee uses the term to describe the welcoming speech for new agents shows that he doesn’t take it at all seriously. As far as he’s concerned, he might as well be serving coffee to Amanda’s PTA and hearing them gossip about their husbands, kids, and pets. It might be work, but it’s not real, serious work, just a formality that he hated when he had to sit through it when he first signed up.

        1. We borrowed the term from German,…

🙂 Really? Nice to know at least some German words and terms are used in the US (and perhaps even some other countries, too). 🙂

My first assumption was coffee klatch is some kind of a Leeism (is that actually a word?) and he got to know Kaffeeklatsch when he was in Germany/Austria and now transferred it into an English term.

          1. There are a lot of borrowed German terms in English. I got curious and found a list on Wikipedia:

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outline_of_German_expressions_in_English#German_terms_commonly_used_in_English

Coffee klatch is on the list. The other ones I’ve heard a lot were gesundheit, poltergeist, doppelganger, kindergarten, and zeitgeist (my history professors used to emphasize taking zeitgeist into account when thinking about decisions people made in the past).

            Like

            1. Oh, I forgot to add that some of these terms are used more frequently in areas of the US where there were a lot of German immigrants. My parents said that they remembered their parents and their friends using the term “coffee klatch” a lot more when they were kids in the Midwest than they’ve heard it around here, in Arizona, where the borrowed words tend to come more from Spanish. I think my mom might have called the group of friends she had when I was in high school her “coffee klatch.”

              1. Growing up in New York and New Jersey, I heard the term from my grandmother who spoke Yiddish and my mother. For my grandmother, it meant coffee and they definitely had the cake with her gossip group (she was an incredible baker). For my mother, it just meant coffee with other moms after we were carpooled to school or got on the bus. Seeing this discussion made me wonder about the writer.

  12. It did get quite amusing how almost every encounter Amanda would have at the start of the episode would be pivotal to arresting/stopping the latest terrorist of the week. And I can’t eat or drink during iwsod’s walkthroughs any longer because I’ve spat tea twice over my tablet screen. But it’s fluffy intelligence for the era – and a really cute couple. What more do you want? I know, I know, some semblance of plot would also be nice….

He does have real work that she could be helping him with – which she agreed to do – and what’s the rush to get the money back to someone who so clearly doesn’t care that he gave you too much? Seriously, Amanda, go back to the Agency, help him with the darn speech, and then go hunting for the mystery man.

Yeah, yeah, I know – no episode plot that way but sometimes they really try my patience and my credulity with this kind of stuff.

    1. Totally agree, Janet. This is a very very clunky plot device. Lee would be entirely within his rights to lose it here. First Amanda invades the privacy of “Mr Jones” and then she wakes the poor guy up during his post-shift daytime sleep just for a few dollars. Stick it in the charity box, Amanda, and let Lee get on with is job. I’m amazed at how calm Sleepy Jones is…
