1/14 Season Three, Episode 21: Three Little Spies -Scarecrow and Mrs King

Happy New Year Everyone! 🙂
A new year, and a new episode!! Here we are at episode 21, nearly at the end of season 3!! It’s only taken 5 years!!!!
oh my gosh!
Anyway, I’m looking forward to discovering Three Little Spies – I know it’s been at least 5 years since I’ve seen it!

A massive thank you to Melissa R who has kindly transcribed this episode and shared it with us all – Melissa R- we salute you!!!!!!

Okay.. here we go.. the episode opens with a peaceful brook.3.21 TLS.avi_000079379 The shot pans up and we see high cliffs..
3.21 TLS.avi_000084484
This cliff looks vaguely familiar..
3.21 TLS.avi_000085985
Hmm… could this be the location of that oh so scary bulldozer that was zooming toward Amanda in You only die twice?!
YODT.avi_002457872
Maybe.. Maybe not..
Anyway, a jeep zooms past..
3.21 TLS.avi_000096196
Closely followed by a tank of some kind with a mounted machine gun shooting at the jeep.
3.21 TLS.avi_000101301
we see the bullets just missing the jeep..
3.21 TLS.avi_000116016
A guy we don’t know leans out the jeep and shoots back. 3.21 TLS.avi_000117817
We then see the machine gun bullets hitting the jeep’s load. The chase continues, and we eventually see another jeep join the chase.  rofl. I’m sure they just used that same shot of the guy leaning out to shoot at the tank behind him! 3.21 TLS.avi_000138838
The jeep that joined the chase also has a mounted machine gun. 3.21 TLS.avi_000144544
It too shoots.. they gain on the jeep. and cut it off..
3.21 TLS.avi_000146646
All these shooters get out looking very mean!!
Whoooo…They seem to have different uniforms – like this is a couple of different armies working together?
[Rofl at the telegraph poles in the distance when this is a remote location in Afghanistan Winking smile ]
3.21 TLS.avi_000153853
They look and find the driver is now dead.
Together, they walk to the back of the jeep to check the load. they find boxes of…
3.21 TLS.avi_000167967
LOL- Cornbread mix!
Not sure if these soldiers were expecting to find Ron’s Mom’s Cornbread mix! rofl!!! [Is this Ronald G.Smith’s mom/mum? or maybe Ronald Reagan’s?]
Awesome smk humour. reminds me of the start of Magic Bus stealing the water!
The scene ends here..

We move on to a close up of a hand marking a map of Afghanistan. 3.21 TLS.avi_000168568
the shot widens, it’s Billy with a massive random map on his desk lol. He just had to put a pin in Afghanistan so he can find it again on the map! Winking smile so Random!3.21 TLS.avi_000174574
Lee: Cornbread mix?
[Oh hoorah!!! no plastic jacket… so glad the suit is back when Lee’s at work!]
Billy: That’s what the label said. The surprise inside was one of ten nuclear detonators that was stolen from a Harrisburg arsenal. [Wow. Ron’s Mom’s Cornbread mix really packs a punch!]
Lee: Harrisburg?..
3.21 TLS.avi_000180880
[um not a fan of this jacket! but.. I’ll take it over the plastic shiny ones any day!]
…Oh, I’ve been opening and closing that file for the last two years. Nothing but dead ends.
Billy: This Pakistani national that the Russians and Chinese just nailed; opened it again.
[Ah so it was Russian and  Chinese army]
3.21 TLS.avi_000191691
Lee: Pakistan? Why would they want a nuclear detonator? They don’t even have a bomb.  [Oh boy.. the 80s were such a simple time! Winking smile  Aie, I think I’ll leave contemporary events to one side.. ]
Billy heads out to the bullpen with Lee following. They join Francine. [Can’t wait to hear what the fashion police make of this outfit!]
Billy: That’s right! Because the nations that do have the bomb have an agreement to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.
3.21 TLS.avi_000202135
Francine
: Ahhh which the Chinese and Russians think we just broke.3.21 TLS.avi_000205205
Lee: They can’t actually think that we’re trying to arm Pakistan. 3.21 TLS.avi_000205739
Francine: Yes they do! And they’re very testy about it! 3.21 TLS.avi_000208441
Billy: What’s the word from the White House, Francine? 3.21 TLS.avi_000211144
Francine: Oh plenty! But to translate all the diplomatic double talk the President admitted to the whole thing. [What? giving Pakistan detonators? 😉 ]  3.21 TLS.avi_000215648
This is all very scary. I mean, just look at how heavy Francine’s make up is! Oh yeah,  there’s nuclear shenanigans going on too Winking smile
Billy: He told them about the other stolen detonators?
3.21 TLS.avi_000217751
Francine
: All nine of them!… And he also told them about the integrated guidance gyros, the U7 back up actuators, and the system 8 adaptability.
[whoa.. sounds really scary!!! whatever all this stuff is!]
3.21 TLS.avi_000220153
[I wonder if Jamie and Phillip are working on a little side project this week involving nuclear detonators, cornbread mix, integrated guidance gyros, U7 back up actuators and a system 8 adaptability Winking smile ]
Lee: All the ingredients for a nice little Armageddon!
3.21 TLS.avi_000226159
[Yup, Cornbread Armageddon!
oh dear, I really hope Jamie and Phillip are not working on a side project this week! Winking smile ]
3.21 TLS.avi_000227961
Francine: Ummm…Hummm…
Lee: We’re going to hear about this for the next couple of arms talks.
3.21 TLS.avi_000232465
Francine: No, actually not! Gorbachev and Zhao saw the President’s revelation kind of like a beginning to an open and honest exchange between countries.
[Gee maybe that’s why the USA president spilled the cornbread mix.
Wait a minute..I need to get my head around all this….
Ronald Reagan was president. This was 1986. Just checked my little
USSR cheat sheet.. Gorbachev was leader (general secretary) of the communist party….  and.. Zhao Ziyang was the general secretary of the communist party of china. Okay good. got that straight I think. I don’t know much about Chinese politics so maybe you guys can help here? or this episode will at least expand my knowledge a little! Here’s an image of Zhao with Ronald Regan back in 1984]
Sorry.. end of political history recap. On with the episode!
Lee: Humm…
Billy: Which means they want something.
3.21 TLS.avi_000240273
Francine: Yeah.
Billy: But what?
3.21 TLS.avi_000242676
Francine: They want an international task force set up to find the detonators…3.21 TLS.avi_000246279
…Isaac Petrovich from the KGB…Chien Chang from Chinese Intelligence…and the US agent originally in charge of the stolen detonators. 3.21 TLS.avi_000258892
Lee: Oh no, no, no. NO, NO, NO you cannot order me to work with those two weasels, Billy! I will not… 3.21 TLS.avi_000262796
Billy: See this John Hancock?
Lee: No I…
3.21 TLS.avi_000265799
Billy: It’s the President’s. This is a Presidential order! It’s the kind of order we follow!.. 3.21 TLS.avi_000268501[Yes, even Lee!! Winking smile  but.. he doesn’t have to be happy about it I guess Winking smile ]
…Let’s get the ball rolling, Francine.
Billy takes Francine by the arm, they begin to walk out of the bullpen. but Lee stops them.
Lee: Billy! Come on you know Petrovich! You know Chang! They’re a couple of cold blooded killers…
3.21 TLS.avi_000273006
…Machines!.. 3.21 TLS.avi_000276009
…Hell, I wont even be able to turn my back on them, let alone work with them! 3.21 TLS.avi_000277210
[Michael Weston from Burn Notice taught me that spies regularly have to work with people they don’t trust!… It will certainly remind Lee how lucky he is to be able to work with Amanda, who he 100% trusts!]
Billy: Lee you’re just going to have to try!
3.21 TLS.avi_000280513
Lee: Well then you’re going to have to give me two more agents to keep an eye on those two blood suckers twenty-four hours a day… 3.21 TLS.avi_000282916
[Will Lee get danger pay?!]
Francine: Well, ah excuse me, but according to this agreement here it says only one agent per country…
3.21 TLS.avi_000290423 [At least Francine sounds regretful about that!]
(They’re silent a moment. Letting this news sink in.)
…But it doesn’t say anything about working with a non-agent.
3.21 TLS.avi_000294327
(Another moment’s silence.. )
[As the old scarecrow brain gets his head around this one.. ]
3.21 TLS.avi_000296429
Billy cottons on and seems to like Francine’s suggestion.
3.21 TLS.avi_000297330
Lee: Amanda?…..
3.21 TLS.avi_000298531
…In with that pack of jackals? Are you crazy?..
3.21 TLS.avi_000301234
…Those guys play hard ball, Billy!..
3.21 TLS.avi_000301835
[At this Billy again motions to Francine to leave the bullpen. Enough Lee, suck it up!]
…Come on they’ll turn on you just like  that! I need help!!
3.21 TLS.avi_000305739
Billy just turns and quietly responds: I know it. 3.21 TLS.avi_000307540
Lee makes two fists3.21 TLS.avi_000309342 and seems to release them. 3.21 TLS.avi_000310243
This fight is over.

What an interesting scene this one is! The first one? not so much.. but this bullpen scene is new! Not unusual we have Lee trying to argue with Billy about taking on a case. lol has that ever actually worked?!
What I can see that’s new is: *gasp!* Francine actually suggests Amanda for the job!!! Then again, it is a job with 2 extremely dangerous foreign agents soooo I’m not sure if this is a vote of confidence or some wish fulfilment here Winking smile

Lee seems extremely rattled by this set up, and doesn’t seem to be afraid to admit it – Lee crying out that he needs help? I think this is quite vulnerable and new. what do you think?

I don’t really mind that he thinks Amanda is not enough – I don’t think it’s  a reflection on her, it’s a reflection on these two jackals/weasels/bloodsuckers me thinks.. Anyway, Lee has no choice, Ronald has given his orders. I guess now not only does he have to worry about the two jackals and his own safety, he’s now got to be worried about Amanda’s also..

Memories of this episode are soooo vague to me! Because it’s not a milestone type episode, I don’t think I paid it much attention when I first got hold of these episodes to watch oh about 8 years ago I guess it was..

Is anyone else flying blind on this walk? So excited that I get to walk through this ep with you all!!!! Helllooooo!!!! Any thoughts starting out everyone?

  1. I noticed something today watching this episode (yes, if anyone is keeping count, I’m watching waaaaaaaayyyy too many SMK episodes lately!). Anyone else think that this cornbread-finding soldier is also Khai from The Man Who Died Twice? I hope I do these links right. Here he is finding cornbread in Three Little Spies:

And here he is talking to Lee in TMWDT:

    1. Hi Amandarambler, really briefly – this comment went into moderation because there were a few links in it – which is totally fine, and keep sharing them if you like, but just wanted to make sure it was clear why you probably didn’t see this comment appear right away.
When it goes into moderation, I approve it as soon as I can 🙂

    2. I had a look at TLS, and could see his face front on a moment before the shot shared here, I don’t they are the same actor. But, my answer is by no means the final say or anything.

  2. I don’t know how I missed this post. Not sure if I got an email or not. Been avoiding checking them. I’m sort of up and down about this episode. I have a feeling that I will discover some new things as we go through it together. There were parts I liked and parts that confused me so we’ll see if things become clearer as we go along.

I do think that Francine has come to know what Amanda can be capable of, especially when it comes to working with Lee. I think in Playing For Keeps, Francine got to see how different it was to work with Lee than how they worked together before. I think she is getting to a point where she is accepting where she stands and where Amanda stands.

There’s more I would like to add, but won’t until we get further into the episode. Hope everyone is well and are recuperating from the holidays.

  3. What does everyone make of Lee’s comment of “… …Come on they’ll turn on you just like that! I need help!” When Billy tells him he’s sending Amanda with him, did anyone else kind of have a “what the heck” moment at that? It’s little things like this that make me wonder if this episode was meant to air before DMLNT, and maybe even before TBWWBK.

    1. I did think Billy seemed a little cavalier about volunteering relatively inexperienced civilian Amanda to assist Lee among seasoned spies who would “turn on you just like that.” Does this suggest Billy thought Lee was exaggerating the situation? When Lee says he needs help, Billy says “I know it.” It’s sort of an ambiguous response… what does he know Lee needs help with? The spies? Amanda? His feelings for Amanda? Billy delivers the line straight so one would think he’s talking about spies, just like Lee is, but then he certainly doesn’t seem to feel the same depth of concern.

I can’t help but wonder if Amanda’s mishandling of Operation Sandstorm is flitting through Lee’s mind as he considers Amanda in a situation ripe with political challenges, both overt and subtle…. although with today’s Lee, I do feel as though his desire to protect Amanda is at least as great as his desire to protect political detente.

      1. I think Billy may know exactly what kind of help Lee will really need. He is very intelligent when it comes to understanding the inner workings of people and I think he has always known that was why Amanda would be so good for Lee, I think Billy even knew that at the very beginning.

  4. I’m so happy to finally get to this episode. It is one of my favorite sleeper episodes, one that I have grown to love more and more with each viewing. It makes me laugh, it makes me think, it makes me cheer, and it makes me remember the 80’s — all the great things that I love about SMK! Good times ahead!! 🙂 [Gee, now that I’ve stuck my neck out, I hope others agree!]

    1. Yep, I agree. And I liked your comparison to the Magic Bus too, Iwsod. It’s so nice to see a revisiting of this quirky and satirical SMK humor that made S1 so fresh and different and daring!

  5. I too find it interesting that Francine suggests Amanda to Billy and Lee for this operation. I think I’m going to go with the explanation that Francine thinks Lee can totally handle Petrovich and Chang on his own and that Amanda will be there to do her usual role and handle the details that Scarecrow won’t be able to focus on while watching P and C. I think Francine knows that Amanda has Lee’s trust. I think Francie has finally accepted, to a degree, Billy’s confidence in Amanda as well.

    1. I’m with you, BJo. I’m thinking that there is a degree of acceptance of Amanda’s abilities from Francine here. And trust of Lee and Billy’s judgement. If we assume that the airing order of the season is correct, I might say that Francine is eating some humble pie after the events at the end of DMLNT, isn’t pushing herself forward, and is acknowledging Amanda’s contribution.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. The fact that Francine isn’t pushing herself forward makes me realize that she must be quite the rule/procedure follower. In fact, as I think through past episodes, I do think she does act according to the book more than breaking the rules a la Scarecrow.

Or maybe she thinks Amanda’s superior knowledge of corn bread mixes and what you can do with them qualifies her for the job! 😉

    2. There’s been a long slow build here of Francine stopping the sniping and actually coming to appreciate Amanda if you look back over the last few episodes. Let’s review: she watched with very little impatience as Amanda slowly and carefully got Rupert to divulge the hidden information in Pharaoh’s Engineer; she helped to protect her as Amanda acted sensibly and coolly under pressure when targeted by the Triumvirate; her main emotion was sympathy after Amanda displayed perfect agent protocol in rescuing Lee from a targeted attack in Eyes Have It; she really had almost no complaint to make after Amanda figured out what Gregory was up to and saved not only a valued mathematician but also Francine…

Even in DMLNT, Francine never argued that Amanda was wrong because she was Amanda, she was defensive because she had done all the security checks and SHE couldn’t possibly be wrong, could she?

It’s been subtle, but somewhere after Playing for Keeps, it seems like the penny really truly dropped that Amanda brings something to the table, and it’s not just her poppyseed cake – and I think to her surprise, she’s realized she actually kind of likes her.

      1. I think Fast Food for Thought got Francine seeing Amanda in a positive light. We know that as far back as Life of the Party, Francine is starting to second-guess her picture of Amanda, even if after that she still can’t resist the occasional dig. But in FFFT, Amanda was brave and a friend. The first is an attribute that Francine truly respects (re LOTP) and the second is something that Francine needs but I think fears.

        Liked by 5 people

        1. I’ve always thought that, deep down, Francine really thought that Amanda’s zinger in J. Edgar’s Ghost about “Are you speaking from personal experience?” was funny and that was another crack in the glacier when she realized she liked Amanda. Her give and take with Amanda throughout this season is very much the same way she talks to Lee – a sort of sibling squabbling level of bugging each other.

          Liked by 4 people

        2. I agree. I know we mostly focus on Amanda’s relationship with Lee, but it would be interesting to take a look at how her relationship with Francine changes – or at least how it seems Francine and Amanda view each other and how it impacts how they treat each other.

          Liked by 1 person

      2. Great points, clagjanet. Francine really can’t deny any longer that Amanda does bring value to the team. I’m not sure I can go as far as you and say that I think Francine might kind of like her; I think I’d use the word respect instead. But maybe respecting her is the first step toward Francine liking Amanda?

        Liked by 2 people

        1. I think Francine’s kinda “guy-ish” when it comes to earning her respect and making her like you. You clearly can impress her by showing her what you can do – as in: that you’re up to the job and up to the challenge. At this point she’s seen Amanda being up to the job and challenge many times. Life of the Party, where Amanda told her she was going in with her even though it was dangerous was probably the first time Francine started to question the image she had formed of Amanda in her mind. (I mean, we do know that kind of thing perfectly fits with the kind of person Amanda is – but it doesn’t fit at all with the image of the “boring suburbian housewife” Francine got of her). There’s small things early on in the show that, imho, show that Francine doesn’t actually hate Amanda. She seems to be quite concerned about her in “D.O.A.” or how she chides Fred Fielder in “Savior” for the way he’s telling Amanda about Lee leaving the Agency. (Was that actually in “Savior”?)

IMHO, Francine’s real problem with Amanda is on the one hand Amanda’s outgoing kind of personality – Amanda manages to make friends everywhere she goes, people always seem to immediately like her and trust her. If I were Francine that would rub me the wrong way just a little and I’d be all like “Oh no, missy, not with me, we’re not gonna be BFFs just because you show up here and everyone likes you!” On the other hand, Amanda – in Francine’s eyes – basically gets everything handed on a silver tray (Billy liking her, Billy’s respect, Billy’s praise, assignment over assignment with Lee, a job at the Agency, …) that she herself had to work hard for. Unfair and not quite accurate? Yes, but that’s Francine. We know she likes drama. 😉 Also, I think that for a while (some time around the time Lee and Amanda started to become friends) Francine might have started to feel like Amanda was trying to “steal” Lee from her by becoming his new best friend, which would explain some of the animosity towards Amanda. Francine Desmond is not a person to react kindly to someone trying to take something away from her (even when the taking away is only happening in her mind).

But then Amanda starts to earn her respect, not only by proving she’s up to the job and the challenges coming along with it but also by showing her that she can be trusted as a person. I’m pretty sure Amanda never told anyone what she and Francine talked about in that freezer (“What happens in the freezer stays in the freezer.”). And she’s not one of those people who just up and leave when things get dangerous or unpleasant either. So Francine would rather have Amanda watch Lee’s back than some other burly, closet-sized Agency hunk (who’s not an agent, either) because she knows that if Amanda’s there then Amanda will STAY there and also that she’ll probably get along with people just fine, as is the Amanda King way. 🙂

          1. I like all of what you say here, Khell, especially in the second paragraph. I can see myself reacting the same way you characterize Francine to Amanda initially. If I were in Francine’s shoes, I think Amanda would rub me the wrong way as well.

          2. You know what? I’d say the Francine and Amanda relationship deserves a post of it’s own….. and I’d suggest Knell is the person who could write it (if you are interested!!)… but.. if anyone else wants to do it feel free 🙂

There’s so much here to unpack that I can’t get into it now, but want to eventually!! At the end of season 3 might be a good time to take a closer look at all the relationships…
Anyone interested in writing a blog post focusing on a relationship you are interested in?
            Lee and Billy?
            Duffy and Neisheim?! tee hee..

No pressure- and no one needs to be an expert on a topic in order to share their take on things – heck, I’m living proof that being an expert is not needed to write blog posts haaaaaaaaaa!!!!!
But.. it could be fun to focus on a relationship specifically and explore it together!
I could add photos if you like.. just write your blog post in a word document and email it to me.. (iwsod@optusnet.com.au) and if you want to suggest photos to go where I can do that for you no problem.. bye for now!

            1. Thanks, iwsod. 😀 It would be great to do a blog post on Francine’s and Amanda’s relationship and also, one on just Francine and I wouldn’t mind doing them. However, I think those posts should maybe wait till we’re through the entire show because, without giving anything away here, there’s some episodes later that are really important for both the relationship of those two and also Francine’s character (one episode especially that sheds some light on her background and that I’d hate to have to leave out). Those who’ve seen the entire show already will know which ones I’m talking of. 😉

      3. Sounds good to me Clagjanet! I think the critical time of change for Francine and her view of Amanda is around Fast Food for Thought and Playing for Keeps…
It’s going to be interesting to take a look at this when exploring the ep order…

  6. The Fashion Police have been temporarily blinded by the glare bouncing off Francine’s lipstick. 😎
Francine looks like a doll here – super shiney, super peroxided, and looks like at any moment she might burst into a tuneless version of “the Good Ship Lollypop”!
But since it’s the 80’s and being a show pony is Francine’s thing (covering up some inner turmoil or lack of confidence?), we’ll cut her some slack.
Notice the very similar ties Lee and Bllly are wearing? And the similar shades of clothing? I think we’re supposed to be realising that Lee is now more internally/emotionally matured, more stable and considered – although obviously still capable of a wee tanty about having to work with Petrovich and Chang. Francine in stark contrast is still all about the fancy packaging and “look”.

    1. I like this, Kiwismh! Here Francine reminds me a bit of “perm Barbie” which I owned somewhere in the 80s. Very interesting point about Lee’s dress style matching Billy’s as he matures. Sadly, Billy’s “look” was always rather dowdy….

      1. Yes, the PTB in SMK-land obviously decided we needed OTT visual clues to help us work out that Lee is maturing. No, we didn’t! Just acting mature and still looking fine would have been perfectly adequate. I’m back to my old mental gymnastics of imaging super-fine looking European Lee in this scene. Works for me. 🙂

        1. I sooooo agreeeeee!!! but then, sometimes SMK doesn’t do subtle huh!

I guess the main thing is : the romance was done with amazing subtlety – and this is what counts.. but ahem.. I also miss super fine Lee! 🙂

    2. I like the hairstyle. It’s one of her better ones. But then I generally like her hairstyles best during the “perm phase”. Make-up’s definitely too heavy but maybe she’s not sleeping well after that Sallee near-disaster (and almost getting killed by an exploding chandelier) – I’d guess she might be a bit wary around lights. Don’t those fluorescent tubes like they have them int he Agency flicker sometimes? If I were her I’d be kinda jumpy …

      Liked by 1 person

        1. I guess the possibility of getting shot is just something that comes with the job. I’d say in the show it sure happens a lot more often that an agent gets shot and ends up injured or dead than having an exploding chandelier kill you. It’s probably just “another day on the job – luckily I got away alive” when you get shot. Francine IS in Field Section after all and for all that we know was more active in the field before the show starts (and still might be in between episodes – only that we never hear about it).

I too haven’t seen this episode in awhile but kinda remember it (the tag in particular, but I’ll keep my self in control here). Iwsod, I agree with your thoughts that Lee’s protests are more about the other spies versus Amanda. It’s really nice to see that Amanda is getting support from both Lee AND Francine. Wow!

  8. lol… Iwsod, I always enjoy your comments. The cornbread is such a random thing. I like how Lee is defensive of using Amanda for this case, knowing the history. I agree, he doesn’t doubt Amanda’s abilities, it’s just the two weasels that he doesn’t trust. I’m curious to see where this one fits in the season 3 order. This is one episode that I haven’t watched in decades, so I’m looking forward to walking through it with everyone!

I think Francine looks pretty good here, compared to other outfits. The lipstick is a little bright but I like her eye makeup.

  9. Happy New Year! I had to dig around to find this post because the e-mail notification link did not work.
I wonder how long it took wardrobe to find lipstick in the exact shade of slightly ripe tomato that Francine is wearing. Hats off to Martha Smith, I would not be brave enough to wear that.
I think Francine suggests Amanda tag along because when the stakes are high, Francine will happily admit that Scarecrow and Mrs. King make a great team (just ignore Francine’s goofy behaviour in DMLNT) and it must give her a certain sense of satisfaction that she found a loop hole in the agreement that the Americans can exploit.

    1. Thanks, Cindy! I couldn’t get it to work until you posted. I also like what you said about Francine acknowledging that Amanda and Lee are a great team.

    2. Hiya! Yeah sorry guys- when I first published the post it was dated 1 January 2016!
Not use to this 2017 yet:-)

I edited the date & it will now show up on the home page of the blog!
      Back later!

      1. Yup, I’ve had to date a couple of things already, and been forced to cross out 2016 because the (ageing) Learjet brain hasn’t caught up yet…

    3. Your comment about the tomato and looking again at Francine made me flash back to Starsky’s car in Starsky and Hutch. They used to call his car a big red tomato. It had a big white stripe on it like Francine’s outfit. Too funny.
