The three spies approach. Petrovich taking photos. 
Lee: Hey, you’re Randall Skylar.
Randall Skylar: That’s me. 
Lee: Oh, far out man! All right. [lol! this has got to be a cover! Far out man – I dig the suspenders/t-shirt combo! ]
Randall Skylar: You’re the international press dudes? [ahhh!!! that explains the ID’s..]
Lee: Yeah, right. I am, uh, Lee Stimpson. This is Isaac Pellur, and Bob Wang.
(They all shake hands- Skylar gives them a rock star hand shake 
)
Randall Skylar: Far out!
Petrovich: Far out!
Randall Skylar: You dudes been to the warehouse yet?
Petrovich: The warehouse… 
Lee: Ahem…
Petrovich: Of course, yes.
Randall Skylar: Pretty hip, huh?..
…That’s 15 million in food and medical supplies on their way to the hungry. 
[okay so now we have 15 million copies sold. lol. They are selling fast!]
Lee: Wow, that sure is something. Listen, Randall,…
…could you tell me how you first got involved with this airlift?
Randall Skylar: Oh, man. I mean, look around you. The world, it’s the pits. [ummm look at the mansion?!]
Lee: Oh, yeah.
(the babe brings him a cocktail, life’s hard )
Randall Skylar: We gotta do something. Chi Chi? 
[Not even Petrovich could accuse this guy of being imperialist America ]
Lee: Uh, no, I don’t think so. We’re on a working visit, heh. 
Petrovich: We would like to know how your organisation works.
Randall Skylar: Yeah…well, like it’s simple…
… I put together 27 rock ‘n’ rollers and we put on a concert that raises more money in one weekend than Band Aid, Live Aid, and Farm Aid combined. And then, we, uh, you know, feed the world. [lol inspiration Bob Geldof? Band Aid was 1984. I had to check 
]
Chang: And how do you plan to transport all these supplies? 
Randall Skylar: Dig it, man. We’ve got the US Air Force.
Lee & Chang: Oh!
[LOL Lee looks all excited by this, but I’m guessing Lee is actually feeling the opposite!]
Randall Skylar: Five of those awesome troop-transport planes. I mean, I am putting together a take off gig. This show will knock your teeth out.
Petrovich & Chang: Oh, hmmm….
Skylar starts to suspect these press guys.
Randall Skylar: Uh, don’t you guys read the papers you write for? I’ve been front-page news for a week. [yeah. it should have been in that dossier!]
Lee: Oh, yeah, yeah. Uh, could you give us a run down on the destinations?
Randall Skylar: Everywhere, man. Asia, Africa, Mideast.
Petrovich: Pakistan? 
Randall Skylar: They got starving people? 
Petrovich: Sure… 
Randall Skylar: We got food. Listen, guys, to tell you the truth, that’s not my department. You see, I’m the flash. I put on the show to raise the money to buy the food, and then I feel good…
… I got people to do all the work. 
Lee: Yeah. Well, then you’re telling us that, uh, you don’t really know where the food is going?
Randall Skylar: Oh, man! To hungry people. Like what else do I need to know? 
Lee: Heh…
Randall Skylar: Pam. Come here!
(Skylar waves over Pam)
Pam Jentry: I’ve been looking for you. We’ve got the first lady. 
Randall Skylar: Oh, you are down two feet. We got Rosalyn?!! [Ha haaaa!!!!]
Chang: Close.
Lee: Ahem… 
Randall Skylar: Whatever. [Yes! details! details!] … Oh, Pam, these guys are press. Press, Pam Jentry. 
Petrovich: Hello.
Lee: How do you do?
Chang: How are you? 
Randall Skylar: Without this cookie, I don’t think I’d have a chance of pulling off this extravaganza. 
Pam Jentry: Well, if I don’t get back to the warehouse, you probably won’t. Excuse me, gentlemen. 
[Hmm she seemed keen to get away from these men.. does she think they are spies? three nationalities just showing up and asking questions would make you suspicious if you were involved with nuclear detonators- I can’t remember if she is or not though. Maybe Skylar isn’t as dumb as he looks? lol.. ]
Lee: Nice meeting you. 
(Pam leaves)
Randall Skylar: Okay. Hang loose. Hey guys, I’ll get you some press kits, okay? I got a lounge singer from Encino to put them together for me. Heh-heh. Very bizarre. [haaaa!!]
(Skylar rushes off to get his bizarre press kits)
Lee: Far out. Ha, ha…yeah. 
[haa haaaaa! this cover of Lee’s is funny. I’ve always thought smk didn’t utilise cover ID’s enough for humour.. so many opportunities! but I do enjoy what we get ]
Chang: Is this guy a joke or what? 
[he may well not be the brightest guy, but it is cool that he is interested in helping others.. he’s just pretty childish about it all I think..]
Lee: Look, it’s obvious Food for Flight is legit. It’s the perfect cover for smuggling detonators. 
Petrovich and Chang are not disagreeing.
We cut to Pam making a phone call. 
she dials, and looks over at the 3 little press men.
Pam Jentry: We have a problem…
Man over phone: I am listening, Miss Jentry.
Uh oh!!!!! Looks like Pam’s one of the baddies in this scenario!
The scene ends here.
Next scene, we are back at the plane and Amanda is on the phone (or is that the ‘spacenet satellite’?)
Amanda: Hi, Mr. Melrose wanted me to let you know a couple of things…
(Amanda looks around to check if anyone is listening. Nadine is behind her, and Amanda lowers her voice)
…It seems that the Indian government found out about the detonator and they think that gives them justifiable reason to build up their nuclear arsenal.
[Ah. Yawn. so we are suppose to be sensing the increased pressure here huh. For me.. it all kinda falls flat. but then, I guess this could be because I have seen this episode before and can’t completely forget how things end!]
(As Amanda talks, Nadine comes and sits behind her)
Lee: Well, if they do that could start an arms race throughout the continent and that’s the spark that could set the tinderbox off…
…Well, let’s just hope Food for Flight pays some big dividends, huh? Fast!
[is that location formerly the Home of Marvellous Marvin’s we saw in The boy who could be king?)
Amanda: Now look, that’s another thing about Food for Flight. It seems that it’s one of Washington’s favorite charities and so there are a lot of Senator’s wives involved. So Mr. Melrose wants you to make sure you’ve really got something before you make a move. 
Lee: Terrific! Not only do we have the Russians and Chinese to worry about now we’ve got Capitol Hill. [Ahhh so this was what that mysterious phone call from Ronald to Billy was about?] 
Amanda: Heh!
Lee: What else did he tell you?
Amanda: Well, he said good luck. You’re gonna need it.
[haaaa great to see in all this Amanda is making a joke with Lee ]
Lee: Heh, huh…thanks! 
[Awhhh! Lee likes Amanda’s joke! I never get bored with these little moments between these two! ]
…All right. Keep in touch with him, will ya?
Amanda: Right!
They hang up. Amanda looks behind her to see Nadine is right behind her listening in. lol. The scene ends there.
Okay here’s a good place to pause.. anything you’d like to share with us all??? What did you think of Skylar?

(Re: Richard Picardo) I just saw that he also played Coach Cutlip on the Wonder Years. A little more hair in that show, but not nearly like this.

Robert Picardo is definitely wearing a wig in this episode. He made a movie around the same time, and he looked EXACTLY like he did on Star Trek Voyager….pretty much bald. His wig in this episode is REALLY bad LOL

Yes, the satire. And the stereotypes. And I can’t help thinking a small bit about where we are finding ourselves in America right now. Stereo types and posturing and suspicion and presuppositions that make us all feel like we are in the right and the other side is so wrong. And the whole world could become a tinder box. But what hope is there? Could it be in those real interpersonal relationships… the one on one, where we really get to know one another? Like Lee and Amanda… and maybe having them together in the context of that plane and the 3 spies together (or is it 6) will somehow save detante???

I agree, Morley. I’ve found that this part of the walk has tempted me to make political references (most of which I have deleted before I hit the post button, or at least softened) because it brings to mind the present tension in the US. Polarization of opinions is a dangerous and unproductive thing, and I think we see a little of that as the 3 little guy spies have discussed Food for Flight and Rock&Roll. Yet the women’s response, embracing a spirit of cooperation and respect, gives hope.

Watching SMK as an adult has been so fascinating because when I was ten and seeing the reruns, I didn’t know anything about the Cold War. (I was only born in 1982). Between then and now I became a huge gymnastics fan and Iron Curtain countries were the big powers in the 1980s, so now I’m seeing what I read about in old magazines and it’s so eye-opening.

Every time I watch this episode I think of the book The Second Mark, about the three medal-winning pairs teams at the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympics. It follows them from the beginning of their careers to the Olympics and the teams were from Canada, Russia, and China. I know this is USA not Canada but it feels close enough.

One other line that I really enjoy from this section of the episode is the one from Lee: “Terrific! Not only do we have the Russians and Chinese to worry about now we’ve got Capitol Hill.” Funny and a bit thought-provoking to see the US’s own government lumped in with the untrustworthy, unpredictable, cut-throat Russians and Chinese. It’s hard to know who the real enemy is in this episode.
I really think the writer’s had fun with this episode. I mentioned earlier that I see it as a satire a la S1. Satires need stereotypes and some over the top scenes to be effective: picture the hijacking of the water truck and the “Stewed Tomato Two” (I can’t even type that without laughing) in The Magic Bus which satirized radicalism and the government weapons policy; or the ridiculous sword fight and movie clips in Remembrance of Things Past which satirized actors and B-movies. Here in Three Little Spies I see them satirizing trendy humanitarianism and challenging the perception of political adversaries. And there’s something else unfolding that we have only caught a glimpse of so far…. but while the men have been posturing and being generally counter-productive, Amanda has been professional, proposed solutions, and actively kept Lee on an even keel. Atta-Girl!

Haha – thanks for the lesson on what satire is and how SMK executes it. I think maybe I just don’t care for satire. Maybe that’s why I feel the way I do about this episode. Magic Bus, ROTPast are two episodes that are also lower on the list of favorite episodes.

Okay, I think I’ve clarified the differences..
Gosh is it possible for an ep to be both satire and farce? I’m thinking it is… because I would view episodes like Magic Bus and ROTP as being a bit of both at different times.
I agree there were satirical elements.. and there was definitely social commentary in there. But things also got farcical – hilarious & ridiculous.
The dialogue was really clever (especially in ROTP) and for me, that’s what made the satire in those eps really funny too…
This episode so far is not as amusing as the season 1 plunges into satire- at least for me. the dialogue is no where near as witty, quick or clever.
But, you made me think Raffie! – and yes I can see that this ep is a satire..[would you say the show is as a whole? I think it could be argued!]
Seems from my little reading that satire may or may not be humorous, so I’d go with this ep being non humorous satire! 🙂
Oh wait, except with Skylar and his look around you the world is suffering! [when we look around and he is at his mansion with his chi chi] – that to me was a great gag.. maybe there are more ahead we haven’t gotten to yet! 🙂
When I stop and think about it, loads of eps are likely satire.. (I’ve been given Fast Food for Thought! 😉 )
whooo this is a fascinating topic to explore, and I do enjoy learning more about how writing and comedy works – I like to learn.
Maybe someone could do a post on it one day – exploring the comedic devices, the writing, the social commentary?

Wow, I didn’t mean to give you a homework assignment, LOL! Good question as to whether the whole show is satire. I could make an argument for that, or for farce. In the interest of refraining from polarization, I would say it could definitely be both! (That is my uneducated opinion.) Perhaps one woman’s satire is another woman’s farce? Then of course there’s the lovely mansion/chi-chi/suffering people gag that you noticed. It’s got a healthy dose of irony mixed into it as well, which is a fave form of humor for me!

Ugh! This scene falls under the “hate” category of the love/hate relationship I have with this episode. I start with Skylar’s outfit – how high-waisted are his pants? I don’t remember men wearing such high waists in the 80s. And Lee’s attempt at “cool” speak. It reminds me of Francine’s lines in the earlier scene with Billy – he’s trying to sound like a music reporter – and fails in my opinion. This cover is so unbelievable!
I also find it disappointing that Skylar is so completely out of touch with every other part of his operation besides the music part. I understand that that may be reality, but I find it disappointing. It makes me think of some celebrities that promote a certain stance/product/you name it but are clueless about the practicalities. The fact that he doesn’t even know that Rosalynn Carter is a former first-lady fuels the stereotype.
On a positive note, I remember the “aid” concerts from the 80s. I still think one of my favorite all time songs is that Feed the World song (Do they know it’s Christmas time at all?). Not sure if that was part of one of the “aid” groups, but the idea is the same.

Lee’s cool speak here (and elsewhere) doens’t work for me either. He’s just getting too old for it. Reminds me of Lance-who-died-in-a-jeep from The Triumvirate.

As we saw in Playing for Keeps, Lee is often way over the top when he tries to play a cover that isn’t Suave Secret Agent Guy. Even in the second ever episode when he breaks into her job interview, he channels some really insane cartoon versions of what he thinks people are like. So I’m going to put this down to Lee-as-bad-actor, and chalk one up to BB for keeping a straight face.

Agree! It would be unfair to label BB as being a bad actor if he was really just trying to make Lee look like a bad actor, which would mean BB was actually being a very good actor, because Lee’s acting was so bad! 🙂

True it is very difficult to play the role of someone playing a role!
I remember thinking this of KJ and her portrayal of Karen – I’m pretty sure I said it here on JWWM also – at certain points of that ep (OOADP) KJ was playing the role of Karen, who was playing the role of Amanda! Sheesh that was complicated!! but KJ did a terrific job of it!
With BB, as you guys have pointed out, he is capable of playing Lee as capable in a cover – yeah the Sour Grapes cover is a great recent example. I was thinking of Sandy Newcombe also (Sudden Death) – a training camp would mean he was playing the cover over a long period of time.. and he ‘played’ it well (ha haaaa get it?!).
I took a more meta approach to Lee’s performance (or lack of!) of his cover IDs in Playing for Keeps and here in 3little spies – I didn’t take anything from it about the character and his cover IDs overall- maybe I could have or should have.. I figured the deliberate awkwardness was in aid of the plot, or just in aid of inserting a bit of humour. I couldn’t sense any over arching story being told here about Lee’s cover IDs. but I’ve found this an interesting idea to explore! 🙂
maybe I will be convinced as we continue 🙂 hopefully there are more cover IDs ahead!

Agreed!. BB seems to be having fun with it. Janet, you’ve got me thinking about where we’ve seen Lee playing a cover that works with his personality (and not just the suave secret agent.) Maybe it’s just this particular music scene? I loved his ‘Ricky Joe’ in ACM Kid. BB and westerns, though.

He was good as the wine snob in Sour Grapes and as a reporter in Utopia Now. He had only a few over the top moments in Burnout so either Lee fails mostly at acting like “normal people” or he fails mostly when Amanda isn’t there to give him that Look that says “Too much, Stetson.”

The clothes comment made me think of the other day when I was at the mall and how I was thinking that, for some people, there’s just no point in trying to look cool by wearing the clothes that are “in style” right now. (Jestress has had long, bitter experience with things that are in style. :P) No matter how trendy the clothes are, if you’re not the right age or the right body weight to wear them, they’re just not going to look cool. The only real way to be stylish is to make sure that what you do wear works well for you personally (fits well, is comfortable, you can move easily, etc.), and I think that goes for speech as well.
If you’re not comfortable with “hip” lingo, then it just sounds as silly and awkward as ill-fitting clothes look. In that case, it’s better just to speak plainly and directly. Simple, clear, direct language never goes out of style.

I’m in the minority here: Skylar irritates me so much that I have to leave the room. And as for that outfit!!! It make Lee’s jacket look quite tasteful. Especially in the sun. With that shirt.
Pam Jensen reminds me of one of those characters in movies where the woman starts out as the dowdy, incompetent, clumsy one but turns out to be the siren (after a makeover/transformation/life-changing experience).

As for Pam, I made the mistake of checking the actress on IMdb and believe me, the transformation looks like it went the other way with some unfortunate plastic surgery.

Skylar is basically a lovable ditz (well, I think they mean him to be lovable, anyway). I’m with Raffie, thinking that he’s kind of a caricature. But, I consider his saving grace to be the fact that he kind of realizes it. He likes the idea that he’s helping to save the world, but he knows that his only real talent is in providing entertainment, so he gets “people” to do the grunt work while he provides the “flash,” and he readily admits it, happily giving Pam credit for making all the arrangements.
Unfortunately, Skylar’s just too much of a happy-go-lucky, trusting idiot, the perfect person for Pam and her friends to take advantage of.

It’s true and good point Jestress, Skylar could be downplaying all the work of others for the press (who he thinks the three spies are) – but he doesn’t.. he may be quite clueless (bless him 😉 ) but he is not clueless about the roles everyone plays. fair enough!
People seem to either like Skylar or not.. will be interesting to explore this as we see some more of Skylar throughout the ep.
So glad you guys have covered where I’ve seen this guy before!!! LOL. I had a look at IMDB and he’s quite prolific. an actor who we see everywhere I think! But I agree, I’m use to seeing him without hair haaaaa..
I think the last thing I saw him in was an episode of The Closer.

I suspect you either love Skylar or you hate him! I love him, although I do him as a caricature, in the middle of a larger satire about the trendy cause-related fundraisers which were popular in the 80’s. Skylar sums it up with this: “Listen, guys, to tell you the truth, that’s not my department. You see, I’m the flash. I put on the show to raise the money to buy the food, and then I feel good… I got people to do all the work.” So Skylar is the hype, the face, the PR. He knows it, he loves it, he’s hip! He doesn’t care about current events [“Rosalyn?” “Close” — LOL, love Chang’s straight-faced response!] but I like to believe he cares about more than just himself.
I think there is one musician in particular who is identified by the phrase “Far Out!” John Denver was pasionately involved in global efforts to combat hunger long before it was trendy, and as far as I could tell, was a face rather than a flash, was educated in his missions, and played an active role. I miss him to this day.
That said, I don’t believe the trendy concerts and the Skylars were heartless, not at all. America responds well to flash and PR, not to mention emotion and drama… which brings me back to Skylar’s quote. Every American supporting Band-Aid got to feel good about themselves for helping the poor by buying a record, which they probably listened to as they reclined in front of their Atari playing Pacman and Pong! But some probably were personally moved and found a life-long cause of their own from the increase of awareness and the show of compassion. I feel like there are many sides to this whole satire, and this scene, and this whole episode in fact, really makes me think.

I like how the writers think all musicians say, “dig it.” Eddie in TBWWBK and Skylar here. I dated one musician (keyboard player) and he’d say, “I’m digging it,” but it wasn’t that often.
Love those little moments between Lee and Amanda too. Lee’s smile at the end while talking to her is adorable. 🙂

When Pam says she’s got the first lady I was assuming Nancy Reagan, but then Skylar mentions Rosalyn as in Carter, at least I think. And then Chang makes it worse by saying, “Close”. He seems pretty dim, which might explain a few things.
I remember all those Live Aid, Band Aid, and Farm Aid concerts and videos. I also remember having to continue to do fundraising for trucks because once all the food got to some of the countries there was no way to transport it to all the places in need.

I had to look him up. He was born in 1953, and this episode was from 1986, so he would have been about 33 there. Star Trek Voyager started in 1995, so it’s a big change in slightly less than 10 years. Maybe he is wearing a wig because his hair was already starting to thin.
