3/21 Season Three, Episode 22: All the World’s a Stage–Scarecrow and Mrs King

Brace yourselves everyone.. Francine is entering Billy’s office..
3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[8]
GASP! What the heck is she wearing??!!! and.. she’s had her hair permed? Was it permed in previous eps? LOL maybe it was and I just didn’t notice..
Billy: Francine what were the results on those scripts from Crypto and Graphology.3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[18]
(Francine puts a file on Billy’s desk for him to look at)
Francine: Well good news and bad. Crypto says not exactly Anton Chekov, but clean. [every one is a critic!] Graphology on the other hand, made a handwriting analysis of the notes in the margin? You ready for this? There is a 75% chance that it’s Dr. Serge Krutiov!
3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[53]
Billy: Krutiov!3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[33]
Lee: Krutiov’s Moscow’s number one brain bender…
3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[9]
…He’s Vienna-trained, a shrink , he took the art of psychological warfare to new lows.
[whoooo look out for those shrinks! SMK loves to paint them as cunning baddies or kooks. (IMHO of course). I love how smk just throws in these random bios when it seems to me that it isn’t specifically aimed at filling in Amanda as a newbie anymore.. Lee seems to just talk to the room! Could have been interesting if BB had talked to camera Winking smile  It’s like the crystal dew drops of spontaneous bios insult our eyes Winking smile ]
Amanda: Yeah I know, I read a Kremlin study on him. They call him the puppet master.
Lee: Yeah, well that’s a polite description believe me. I’ve seen what he’s done to people’s minds, and how much he enjoys it. He’s sick!
[yeah! those shrinks are sick! Oh smk… give us a legit psychiatrist or psychologist just once?!  and no I don’t see the agency’s shrink as legit. He’s portrayed as a kook.]
3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[7]
[Whoooo talk it up Lee! We’ve got to believe this guy is a bad, really really bad baddie. But.. will he beat Sallee in the golden teacup awards for season 3?! ]
Billy: And he’s big league, so if he’s involved in this, it’s important.3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[56]
Lee: I want this one, Billy3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[28]

Billy: You got it. I want you to start with Carl Valentine, the guy whose producing Martinet’s play. I think he brought the Bolshoi to North America a few years ago. Maybe he’s still got some connections with the Soviets. Amanda?3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[12]
Amanda: Yes, Sir.
Billy: Cover the rehearsal, and see if you can pick Martinet’s mind a little.
3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[45]
(love the little eyebrow raise he does here, like he wants Amanda to get all brain bender!)
Francine: Uh excuse me Billy,…3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[49]
…but if Krutiov is involved in this, I mean,…3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[50] …don’t you think that qualifies for a trained agent?
3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[69][Love how Francine gives Amanda a little look up and down.
Though I do sense there is less venom in this question than there use to be.
I guess Francine missed the part where we learned Amanda has knowledge useful to the case. But.. it’s been a while since we’ve had this protest from Francine no? And besides.. Amanda is now trained! Just not fully trained Winking smile and she’s just ummm not an ‘agent’ ugh… sooooo over this! Three seasons of it and I’m done. Get her a badge already! I bet you are all over hearing me complain about it! 🙂 ]
Billy: The fact is right now we don’t know what we’re dealing with-3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[17]
Francine: -Yes, but I-
3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[38]
Billy: AND, Amanda is familiar with Martinet’s work so this could be a valuable asset at this stage of the game.
3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[48]
Francine: Right!-
We cut back to Amanda.. fleetingly seeming to enjoy this little moment of Billy backing up his choice of Amanda  Smile
3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[25]
Have we seen Amanda enjoying this before? I could have forgotten but I don’t think we typically see a close up on Amanda and her reaction like this.
Billy (to Francine):
SSSSH… 3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[70]
(Billy turns to address Amanda) …Amanda,
(she snaps out of her enjoyment!)
3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[37]
…if it does get hot, I want you on the bench, understand?3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[30]
Amanda:  Understood, Sir.3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[24]
[Don’t worry Billy, she’s all set- she’s already wearing shoulder pads, she’s ready to hit the field! ]
(Amanda says this with great confidence and commitment.. and begins leaving the office. Lee reacts)
3.22-ALL-THE-WORLDS-A-STAGE.avi_0003[13]
[Lee looks a little umm.. how would you describe it? sorry it has to be this way but it’s best kinda thing? maybe? thoughts? Or maybe it’s an expression for Francine? Saying too bad? anyone? ]
(Both Lee and Amanda leave.. Lee tries to get the door, but Amanda beats him to it, and they seem to open the door together.)
[LOL. Lee is just itching to open doors for Amanda these days  Smile ]

Ta da! We see a business building with satellites.. Riveting!

Is this something to do with the old star wars program?
We find Maria Von Clausen sitting at her desk in front of a blackboard full of some mean looking equations. This woman is smart!!
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_000406806
Maria: Hey, two days until opening night. I thought you’d sound happier. Or are you getting bored with me.
[IMHO sounds more like teasing than genuine insecurity]
Oh my gosh!!! Maria is talking to
Robert Castille from Vigilante Mothers?!
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_000412012
Oh nooo!!! He got out of prison? He’s up to his old tricks charming women to use them??!! Hmm.. maybe he’s after these tricksy laser technologies too.
Castille (?):Well I’d spin a line about what’s an opening night compared to a night with you but you’d accuse me of being a bad writer.
Maria: It’s not your writing I’m thinking about right now.
[hooo haaaaa! Castille has her hooked! Oh wait.. opening night.. being a write – this is Tony Martinet? Castille has this alias that he’s been working since the 70’s? whooo he’s good!! Smile ]
Tony:  You’re sweet. Ah don’t mind me,  I’m just grinding my teeth about the backers, they’re braying about idiotic changes to the script.3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_000425825
[Ugh. that sweater is awful!]
Maria: Its your play, Tony, don’t change a word if you don’t want to. And stop worrying. Save your energy for us, for tomorrow. I don’t get to see enough of you to appreciate an off night if you follow my drift.3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_000437037
[Wow. she’ s demanding! Stop worrying and perform for me! Is this a genuine relationship? or is he playing her? This demand from the outset IMHO raises questions about the quality of this relationship. She is supportive of him valuing his work I guess.. oh well, this all keeps the plot interesting! Smile ]
Tony: I’d follow it anywhere.
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_000438638
Someone enters Tony’s office.. 3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_000441841
Tony: Look, here comes my producer. I’ll see you tomorrow.  Bye. (Tony hangs up.)
Carl: Hello, Tony.

Tony: Carl, what is this? The script is set you know that.3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_000451851
Carl Valentine: Oh Tony, it’s all part of the process; 3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_000457057
…a guy puts $20,000 into a show and he thinks he’s Flo Ziegfeld… 3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_000459059
…You never should have seen this… 3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_000459859
(Valentine drops the script with changes into the bin)
[Okay, now who is playing who! I’m suspicious of everyone!]
……Now will you go to work please?…3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_000463063 …You’re brilliant, the play is brilliant….

(Tony gets up to leave, he doesn’t seem terribly reassured..
Valentine takes a seat and dials a phone number..) The scene ends there.

So, we’ll pause there for now… what to you all think? Anything you’d like to share? Questions? Observations? Gripes? Comments? Compliments for this part of the ep? Smile

  1. Oooh, Janet- fascinating fact about the whole casting in a season finale bit with Castille/Tony!!! Thank you for sharing that!

Also, have we seen this sweater that Tony is wearing before somewhere? Or have I just watched this episode so many times at some many different times in my life that it is permanently ingrained in my mind?? 😄

    Like

    1. That was so cool and sweet. (And I wish they’d gotten him back for the S4 finale, blast it! LOL)

Speaking of casting, the choice of the actor for Valentine cracks me up. He also appears in a theater-themed episode of Hart To Hart as a theater director. How’s that for typecasting?

      Like

    2. Finally realized where we saw the sweater before! Lee is wearing it during the fight scene at the end of “Welcome to America, Mr. Brand”. It also shows up in Season 4 on a baddie!

  3. Loving so many of the comments. Not a fan of Francine’s hair or outfit either, but am a fan of Amanda’s reaction to shushing Francine. I love the “shh” from him.

Francine sees and hears how important this case is going to be. Maybe she’s angling to redeem herself from the fiasco in DMLNT. It’s possible that she’s a little less snarky because she is learning that it doesn’t bode well to make less or light of what Amanda can do. She knows she’s not going to get a case before Amanda if she comes across with an attitude.

  4. So I just had to comment about Daniel Davis showing up again since I had just posted this in a FB group the other day . It will bore some of you who saw it there but it still makes me laugh. Apparently, DD was asked about his episodes on SMK at a convention and said, “The first episode I did, was the last episode of season 2, and Kate Jackson, who was the producer, and Bruce Boxleitner, were nervously awaiting whether they would be picked up for next year. So in the middle of a scene, the director yells cut to tell us the show has been picked up for a third season, and Kate Jackson comes to me and says: ‘At our last episode of next season, you’ll be the guest star, because you are a good luck token’. So I did the last episode of next season, and once again, in the middle of shooting, ‘you’ve been picked up’, and I was not asked to do the final episode of the next season, and they were cancelled.”
Who knew he had such a superpower?

    1. Hi Everyone!

Whooooo thanks for sharing this clagjanet!

Just how did Season 1 get renewed without him?! 🙂

So we have KJ to blame for Castille/Martinet confusion! I guess she was also instrumental in the Tucker/Joe King Confusion too!

The first thought that struck me with this little quote was – when they were filming All the World’s a Stage, it was viewed as the final episode of the season! So there goes any question I guess that TBWCBK was the season finale!
And… it also means that they constructed this episode so it was an acceptable (if not premature) Show Finale!!! Whooooooo… now this is all very interesting and I guess we can’t talk through all this until we reach the end. So I’ll keep all this in mind as we walk on through this ep and we’ll come back to it.

Last random thought before I head off for the day – I looked up what date JWWM started to walk through season 3 – I could not believe it.. We started walking through Welcome to America Mr Brand on 01 March 2014!!! You read that right: 2014!!! It has taken us exactly 3 years to walk through season 3!!!
No wonder I’m feeling a little sad to see it close… but also excited to be moving on to season 4 🙂
Okay enough ramblings from me – bye!!

[edited typo lol 3 yrs not 2 yrs!]

        1. Haaaa hey it’s all good clagjanet, I enjoyed your comment!
You know, it maybe that they intended ATWAS to be the final ep for season 3 – but that doesn’t have to stop any of us choosing to put it somewhere else and coming up with our own preferred ep order anyway 🙂

Another interesting implication- we know Vigilante Mothers really was the final episode for season 2! I can’t remember if I had it last in my order I came up with I’ll have to look.

Vienna was historically a centre for cutting edge psychiatric advancement- Freud was in Vienna.
I wouldn’t say I know for sure – but I think by saying this Lee is communicating Krutiov is an expert with advanced training in brain bending sort of thing. Hope that helps!

  6. That’s a peculiarly unnatural shade that Francine is wearing – kind’ve orange spilled over apricot. Lee seems to be somewhat stunned by it too – check out the second pic. His expression seems to say – Ick, that colour’s making me feel sick! Time for Francine to clock up some more time in the Fashion Police cells… 😎
Great to see Daniel Davis back in a guest role – hopefully as a good guy this time. He’s such a good actor.

    1. Back home, there was a socalled Building Society – their colour was almost exactly the same shade as Francine’s outfit. Their adverts also featured bananas and yellow and white cockatoors. So to me, Francine looks like a bank employee, who has had a bad perm and then gone outside on a really humid day. It’s beyond my powers of imagination that she might look like that by choice!!

      2. I remember yellow and black being a BIG color combo around that time. Ditto for red and black. White was often thrown in. Watching Francine’s outfits is always a fascinating trip down memory lane. … although I dressed much more like Amanda than Francine!

      2. Honestly, I do not hate this outfit of Francine’s. I think the scarf is kind of terrific, actually. It would look good with a black top. The problem is the color of her suit. This shade of yellow looks terrible on her.

I shouldn’t talk, though. My hair color and complexion are the same as Francine’s. When I was in middle school, right around the time this episode aired, I had an oversized, v-neck sweater that was the exact same color of fluorescent yellow as her suit here. I would always wear it over a hot pink turtleneck. It was one of my favorite outfits. Shudder.

I’ve noticed that Francine wears a lot of yellow in seasons 3 and 4. It’s an odd choice, because yellow is just a hard color for a blonde to pull off. Not all of her yellow outfits are horrible, though. I think the pale yellow dress with the pleated skirt that she wears in the tag of this episode is adorable — it is one of my favorites of hers. I also love it when she wears her hair in curls, but I see that not many share this opinion!

  7. I like Maria’s directness with Tony here. I think it is her way of flirting (‘I find you attractive and looking forward to our sexy times together’) rather than a command performance. It gives him something to look forward to and get his mind off the inane script changes.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Interesting thoughts about the motivation behind Maria’s behaviour, Cindy. I find her manner rather off-putting and a bit too obvious. Usually this level of directness in SMK is a huge warning sign “Baddie ahead. Watch out!”. Are we supposed to wonder about Maria? Is Maria a problem (“How do you solve a problem like Maria?”, getting back to the Austrian theme…)

      Liked by 3 people

      1. I guess it doesn’t bother me because I am direct. Like I told my husband just before we started dating “I like you, I like you a lot and I think we would be great together. By the way, I am moving, but I think we can make a long distance relationship work.” He does admit I kept him on his toes.

        Liked by 1 person

        1. Direct I like but “Let’s get a room together” (as she effectively says) is a bit blunt for me. I think I’m getting more shockable with age (aren’t I supposed to be less shockable??)

          1. LOL I don’t mind a character being forward nor automatically view it as baddie code 😉

Not knowing the character I wasn’t sure if it was
            a) all in good fun teasing, or
            b) teasing but with an element of truth

If it’s b) a command to perform and a disregard for his concerns raises question marks for me about whether this is a genuine relationship.
I guess it could be genuine, and lousy! lol.

I don’t know if it’s a) or b) at this stage that’s all I’ve got to go by.

[not taking into consideration Castille’s history haaa]

So I like the idea that it’s just teasing, but I’m on alert to signs this relationship is no good!

            1. I think its interesting to watch the relationships with the guest stars.Tony and Maria appear to have a mature and long term relationship even though it appears to be that they don’t see each other too often. We had the newly wed reporters who were separated due to apparent death and I am trying to think of others. But I wonder if these relationships don’t also set Lee and Amanda up against a certain relationship back ground?

At this point I’m not comparing really because I don’t know if they are a mature and long term relationship. For me, I’m not sure it’s true love at this point..
But with the reporters that was clear from the start 🙂 and indeed! it was wonderful to explore the meaning in the parallel stories.

It might be that Tony and Maria are the antithesis of Lee and Amanda 🙂

  8. Ignoring Francine’s wardrobe for a moment, Lee looks GOOD! I missed the suits after the jean-jacket combos we saw in 3 Little Spies. Okay Francine…. When is she ever going to learn? The suit would be less terrible if the shoulder pads were gone. It’s definitely not her color. Maybe someone else could wear it better? Never liked the permed look on her either.

I’ll have to reserve my opinion on Tony for later. Forgot he was in VM (good catch, Iwsod). I don’t hate the sweater. I actually think he looks pretty good here. Not nearly as good as Lee, but will any guy ever compare?

Just love how cool Amanda is here while Francine tries to take the assignment, and also just the professional rapport between her and Billy. I’m sure we’ve discussed this here before. There’s so much trust and respect. Maybe that’s why she doesn’t worry about the guest badge. She knows she’s worth more and doesn’t need the badge to prove it (although, yes, it would be nice and she has earned it!).

  9. If I remember correctly, it seems that Francine’s hair was permed in the Triumvirate. Amanda seems very mature in this scene. Everything about her seems different, her hair and face, her actions and reactions, her speech even. Lee looks like the cat who ate the canary!

  10. The scene in the office is very professional. No gloating (or modesty) from Amanda when Billy chooses her over Francine. No (expressed) worry or concern from Lee. I think Amanda has finally reached ‘agent’ status. (and she is reading Kremlin studies)
I really enjoyed Lee’s little factoid (and Iwsod’s comments on it).
Shuddered at Francine’s outfit and hair – that poor woman, she should get danger money.
So we now have the explanation of why Martinet was off grid for a few years,(didn’t Amanda say that) he was moonlighting as Castille- selling secrets for money. Now he is back as a playwrit (perhaps he turned states evidence or something). Still charming the ladies and still very hard to see why.
    The plot thickens !!!

    2. Thinking about this scene a bit more I think Francine is not so much trying to undermine Amanda’s involvement, but more trying to protect Amanda from becoming involved due to the extreme badness of this baddie. In other words, maybe she is beginning to like Amanda and doesn’t want to see her in real harms way. Whereas I think Lee is equally concerned but better able now to control his diplays of over-protectiveness. He respects her professionalism and skills too much now to undermine her role.

For me, I don’t think Francine is worried about Amanda and wanting to protect her. But, your thoughts got me thinking – that maybe it is less about Francine wanting to go instead of Amanda.. and more about Francine just wanting to go and be of use.
like- okay miss untrained agent gets to go, but hey I’m trained and I can be really useful too! maybe?
This is a different tone to previous scenes with Francine trying to assert her superiority.. so I kinda like this picture that’s forming here of this moment..

Actually when I think about it, Lee says he wants in on this one. But it all started with Billy choosing Amanda to work on this case, because of her theatre background. So we argue that Lee is on the case because Amanda is 😉

soooooo don’t feel bad Francine! and lol I guess she may still have something to do other than drop files on Billy’s desk – we’ll have to wait to find out 🙂
