10/21 Season Three, Episode 22: All the World’s a Stage–Scarecrow and Mrs King

Back at the theatre, Carl and Tony head back out to address the actors. Well… what did Tony decide? Will he fight? Or.. will he give in to the manipulation of Krutiov/Valentine?
Lee and Amanda are still sitting in the audience-together!
Carl: People, please may I have your attention everyone. I am delighted to announce that Tony has convinced me to go back to the original script.
[Uh oh!!.. seems Tony has agreed to commit treason somehow!]

Man: All right!
[Hmm it seems the agency is really on the ball! They’ve got another agent who has infiltrated this company! The guy behind Valentine to the right? He ‘shot’ Lee in the 3 Faces of Emily Smile ]

Sorry.. getting distracted by the dishipline!
Hearing the news about the scripts – Everyone cheers and claps… except Tony. 3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001374674
Amanda: For a playwright who just got his script back Tony doesn’t look very happy.3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001379779
Tony hands a red script to someone and tells the person to : Take these out and burn them.
(He starts handing out blue scripts – I think that’s what they were to start with wasn’t it?)
Valentine walks past Lee and Amanda, so Amanda looks down at her surpassed and lousy script.
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001386086
Lee: All right you stay with Martinet for now, I’ll hang with Valentine. Remember….3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001388788
Amanda: Right.
In unison: Be careful.
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001389689

Lee: Yeah.
(Lee leaves, Amanda also gets up to head back up to the stage.)
Tony:We’ll start rehearsal from the top in ten minutes.
The actors are all being distributed the blue scripts, Tony leaves, and Amanda follows him. Downstairs she goes…
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001409509
She can hear him on the telephone..
Tony: Yes well I’ve been on hold. Yes this is Tony Martinet, I’d like to confirm a reservation…
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001410410
That’s right. Yes I’ll be arriving about four. Yes, that’s right. Thank you.
Tony hangs up and leaves.

Amanda sneaks quietly into the office. Ah! this is Tony’s office I guess.. 3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001435035
Amanda sees a long stemmed rose (I think) on his desk, in a box.. 3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001441641
she hits redial.
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001452052
We see a big close up that tells us so! Smile
Amanda anxiously waits for the mystery number to dial.
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001455955
Woman on phone: Potomac Plaza Hotel.
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001457757
Finding out what she needed to know, Amanda hangs up and leaves.
We see an exterior of Washington DC – is this a downtown location? we’ve seen this before haven’t we?
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001464964
We then see the exterior of another building
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001465265
It seems to have no signage.
We find Amanda in the foyer – guess this is the Potomac Plaza hotel..
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001471271
Amanda: Francine, are you telling me that Lee hasn’t picked up any of his messages?
Francine: That’s right.
Amanda: All right, when he does, would you tell him I am at the Potomac Plaza Hotel and ask him to meet me here as soon as he can.
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001482982
Francine: OK OK.
Amanda: Thank you very much.
Francine: Ok bye bye.
[Francine doesn’t sound ticked off to be taking messages for Amanda.. Hmm progress I think! Smile ]
Amanda: Goodbye.
As Amanda turns back to the phone to hang up we see a familiar set of shoulders come into view..
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001489289
Amanda: Oooh…3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001490490 …well hello!!3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001492292
Lee: What are you doing here?3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001493793

Amanda: You’d know if you picked up your messages.3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001494994
Lee: I’ve been busy following Valentine, he’s in a room on the fourth floor…
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001497997
…You were supposed to stay with Martinet.3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001499799
Amanda: I am, he’s gonna be here any minute.3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001502202

As if this is his cue – Tony is seen entering the lobby- carrying that long stemmed red rose.
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001503403
Uh oh.
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001504004
Lee quickly grabs Amanda [hoo haaaa. Lee shouldn’t the two of you have a talk about this? I mean this could change your whole relationship!]3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001504904
[sorry it’s blurry because it’s quick!]3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001515115
They both look over at the elevators and watch Martinet entering the elevator.
Lee: Let’s go.
They head over the elevator and watch what floor it stops at.
Lee: Third floor.
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001525992
Amanda: Right.3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001528595
Lee heads toward the elevator and Amanda follows..
Lee pauses to stop her.
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_001531331
Lee: Now wait-
Amanda: -You’re gonna need backup.
Amanda doesn’t wait for him to respond. She just gives him a little shove into the elevator backwards rofl!!!
In they go.. and up they go to level 3.

Wow. This little scene reminds me of two previous smk scenes.. what about you?  (do tell!)
I wonder if this is deliberate..

Firstly, it reminds me of Over the Limit

That scene at the elevator where Lee tells Amanda: …you go home!… Go Home!
[she replies not this time buster!]

And… later in season 3 – In Reach for the sky, there’s the famous ‘call me a cab’ scene! Where they follow baddie Zorbel and he enters an elevator.. Lee and Amanda watch the elevator to see where it stops.. Lee heads up in the elevator, while Amanda stays in the lobby. Then, when he goes back down to the lobby to re-join Amanda she’s on a public phone – like she was here! they see Zorbel exit the elevator and that time Amanda grabs Lee to turn him away from being discovered Winking smile
Amanda goes to follow Zorbel with Lee but he stops her.

Lee tells Amanda to go back to the agency.

Amanda complains this always happens she ends up going back to the agency..
See here if you can’t remember the scene.
It’s interesting I’m reminded of these two scenes because in this ep so far, Amanda has really been making strides as a professional – with her picking the lock on her cuffs, doing the cover ID, infiltrating the theatre company, and with convincing Lee earlier that her cover is good- very good! She doesn’t need to go home, or go back to the agency like Billy wants her to if it gets too dangerous.

Here we see this again, Lee resisting Amanda’s participation, and Amanda pushing back – and for me, Amanda seems totally prepared to push back now! She’s got her good arguments all ready to go! And Lee can’t refuse her Smile She is no longer responding with frustration either – she’s cool and totally able to handle it now without reacting with strong emotions. Smile  I think Lee’s confidence in her has totally grown too of course, which helps him to listen to her and agree to it!

Overall, this little theme seems to play out over season 3 – and here, twice now (so far) this has come up. It didn’t come up in DMLNT – when Sallee was very dangerous..(or did it?) hmm makes me wonder if this ep should go before DMLNT… Just pondering and thinking aloud. I do enjoy looking back and seeing how far they’ve come Smile Hope you do too!
Well we better pause here.
Can’t wait to hear your thoughts everyone!

  1. Oh Lee, would you give up on leaving her behind already? A) She will never listen to you. B) When she does, she ends up in more danger than if she’d just stayed with you! LOL

I can’t criticize that blue plaid, sorry. For one thing, I love plaid and for another, it’s blue and I think blue is one of Lee/Bruce’s best colors, along with tuxedo black, white, and that vivid red he wears on the ep where he steals the missile undercover. We also see a similar blue look on one ep next season and Over The Limit and I love it every time!

  2. Ooh ooh, Iwsod, there’s two more examples in your comments of other season 3 episodes – Over the Limit and Reach for the Sky!!! I never tied all of this together!! So fun!!!! And I’ll go so far as to comment about the rose being a Wizard reference!!

  3. Okay, I’ve been away for way too long. Can’t believe how many posts I’ve missed. It’s Easter break so I’m going to play catch up again. The elevator scenes with Lee and Amanda are filled lots of goodness. Later in “Reach for the Sky” in the same elevator we learn that Lee has told Amanda about breaking into a sorority house and how Amanda was in a sorority. We find out that they’ve been having deeper discussions. There was also that great elevator scene in “Triumvirate” when Amanda grabbed for Lee’s hand. What’s that song by Aerosmith? “Love in An Elevator”? That might be a trip to the gutter.

    1. I’m sensing a valeriejw binge! And you are correct, “Love in an Elevator” was that great song by Aerosmith. Make room in the gutter…so glad to see you on the blog! I hope to find time to binge myself this coming week as I’m also dreadfully behind!

  4. I love the last part of your post Iwsod. Yes, I think there is something there in the development of those elevator scenes. They started way back in season one with the one where they were pinning their badges on each other. Maybe even before that in the second episode when Amanda pushes Lee back into the elevator in the Georgetown foyer. I love it when SMK put continuity in there and I really love it because the continuity has to do with elevator scenes and the like.

And I do think that “be careful” is Lee and Amanda code for “I love you.” Just sayin’.

    1. Thanks Morley – I love what you wrote too!

Hey.. Elevators are all about changing levels!!! Could represent the changing ‘levels’ in a relationship no?

be careful = I love you? sounds good to me!! 🙂 [As you wish!! – you are a princess bride fan and will get that right?!]

      1. Yup changing levels in their work relationship too. Pinning clearance badges on each other was a way of inviting Amanda in and recognizing Lee as an agent, Go back to the office kept her safe. Being off the case as far as Lee understood while Amanda was determined to keep on the job and flee the reality of Lee’s relationship with Leslie ( sorry I put her name into this episode discussion, ugh ) and now here… here, she pushes him in and follows right after him, face to face… I wonder what their conduct was with each other during that elevator ride ( too bad it wasn’t a tall building) perhaps they were both remembering their first elevator ride?

  5. Ooh! Great catch on the dude that shot Lee! I love it when people find these things! That Potomac Plaza Hotel also looks a little familiar. I think this has maybe doubled as a hospital in earlier episodes? DOA or The Damned Duck episode?

Francine must really have other things on her mind if she is not zinging Amanda here about being at a hotel and sounding like she is desperate for Lee to arrive…hahahaha! Perhaps we missed Amanda telling Francine that she followed Martinet there and is in the lobby.

Whoever did Amanda’s hair and makeup for this episode did a really good job! She really looks very pretty here! Maybe her confidence is playing a part in her attractiveness as well?

I love it when Lee grabs and manhandles Amanda like that. Lol I’d happily volunteer to be her stunt double 😉 Anyone else?

Totally love how she catches Lee flatfooted and pushes him into the elevator and doesn’t even give him a chance to get the word out of his mouth! I think he is all too happy to have her by his side anyway. He knows Amanda will be an asset with him – at least I think he knows it. He should by now, that’s for sure! Plus I think Amanda is fully confident in herself now and realizes this is not a dangerous situation. Or not likely to be anyway. Tony’s only weapon is the thorns on the roses. And Valentine’s worst trait seems to be his left hand always finding its way into his pocket.

I was thinking the same thing!! Amanda left herself WIDE open on that one and Francine left it alone??? Yes, somehow or another, Francine must have known that this was an urgent business call and time was of the essence, so she’d better stay in professional mode.

  6. I like the verbal back and forth here between L&A. Looks like Lee is enjoying it too, and even though we don’t see Amanda’s face I expect her expression is similar.
Anyway, it is enough to distract from the all plaid, all the time routine that L&A have going this episode. Even Lee’s jacket has a plaid lining. He’s really gone all out with his Dad-disguise today
    Amanda’s jeans are nice though – I hope Lee appreciates… 😉
Does Tony have a box of chocolates to go with the long stemmed rose. Every time someone mentions the long stem rose it reminds me of one of my favourite Leonard Cohen songs, Everybody knows – “Everybody wants a box of chocolates and a long stemmed rose, everybody knows.”
Ha, it just occurred to me that it seems like everybody does know about Tony and von Clauson, except they don’t know everybody knows. 😀

    1. Working hard to keep this one PG, but they say chocolates are good to eat before…ahem Anyway, maybe Tony decided to skip the chocolates. I guess our director doesn’t think acting will be necessary 😉 😉

Okay, back into the gutter for me!

  7. Really liking Amanda’s hair here. It’s like the good old days (ie S1!) And in the close-up of Lee and Amanda gazing at the stage, it looks a bit like Lee has been dabbling with guyliner again (didn’t you learn from your past mistakes, Lee??)

Interesting thoughts about Amanda’s professional development, Iwsod. Lee does seem to be allowing her more freedom as a ‘real’ agent in this episode so far, compared to some of the earlier S3 episodes. I’m struck again in this seem how it all seems to be coming together for Amanda in this episode. At risk of sounding like my (much loved) mother, she has been ‘blossoming’ as the season progresses, and I see her as reaching full bloom (professionally and personally) in this episode.

  8. I like that the writers are starting to get into the rhythm of what is almost a standing joke with these two: first Lee half-heartedly tries to keep her out of dangerous things and then she refuses and the length of time he considers it gives you an idea of how much he meant it. Lee also knows that when guns come out (JEG, Triumvirate) or bombs (Geisterschloss, DMLNT), she actually does get out of the way so he’s learned when to say it and when not to bother. The”Be careful” in unison in the previous post suggests that he knew this was a “not gonna bother” moment, and she knew it too. It’s a very spouse type thing to do. LOL

And now, I will hop into the gutter with everyone else on the “how did Francine pass up that opportunity?” question, followed by my now instinctive response: “There’s a fic in that…” 🙂
