14/21 Season Three, Episode 22: All the World’s a Stage–Scarecrow and Mrs King

Elsewhere in the hotel..
Valentine: I never should have agreed to do this.3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002032132_thumb
[Ugh!!  I despise spineless reluctant baddies who go on about how they never should have agreed to do this – all while continuing to go along. That doctor in The Eyes Have it was the same! I guess the question is: Is Valentine one of these baddies? or is he going to step up and redeem himself?]
Krutiov: You never had a choice. None whatsoever…
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002034534_thumb
[Krutiov tries for humour. It doesn’t suit him.]
Choice. That’s what it all comes down to. And here IMHO Krutiov continues to manipulate, giving Valentine an out- that it’s not his fault, he’s not responsible – he had no choice. So Valentine can ease his conscience and continue to do what Krutiov wants. It’s a lie though. Valentine is making a choice- he chooses to go along with Krutiov… but why?!]
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002036136_thumb
(Krutiov pulls a fat envelope out of his pocket- full of cash)
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002039939_thumb
…This will assuage your guilt. Call it a bonus….
(Valentine rejects the envelope crossing his arms rather than taking it from Krutiov)3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002047347_thumb
…I know you want one….
(Krutiov slaps him on Valentine on the arm with it.)
…No time for quibbling. 3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002049149_thumb
(Krutiov waves the envelope & Valentine takes it.)
[Ahhhhh this is why Valentine chooses to continue to go along, even now that he knows the terrible things he is a part of. ]
(The doorbell rings)3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002051351_thumb
…That will be Mr. Martinet.
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002053153_thumb
[Krutiov is sounding rather upbeat. Me thinks he enjoys his ‘work’ too much!]3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002058958_thumb
(Krutiov and Valentine move toward the door. Krutiov hides in a room opposite, Valentine goes to open the door.)
[I think Krutiov stays very close to Valentine here – as a looming presence, and another push to do what Krutiov wants]
(In comes Tony)
Carl: It’s over, good…. 3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002066166_thumb
…Can I have the tape?3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002068968_thumb
Tony: This tape?
(Maria’s voice says “Thank you Dr Weber, The D-14.). [The tape stops]3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002072972_thumb
…The rest is erased.
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002076176_thumb
Carl: Tony, would you be serious?…
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002080180_thumb
…If you don’t come through with this, they’re gonna kill you; they’re gonna kill me.
[I wonder if that’s true.. would Valentine really be killed? Who knows.. but it’s useful to say so. ]
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002083583_thumb
Tony: I waited 10 years to get my play produced…
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002086586_thumb
…And I had to betray the woman I love for it…
(more quietly) …I know what that makes me… 3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002092392_thumb
…When I know that Maria is safe, and when the curtain comes down at the end of opening night tomorrow, then you get the tape.3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002100200_thumb
Seems like Tony is a bit disgusted with himself for what he’s done so far.. Ashamed maybe?
That shame could result in Tony denying what he has done, downplaying what he has done, or embracing what he’s done.. Tony seems to be choosing to accept what he has done, and now improve the situation for Maria, but also for his play!
It seems Tony is discovering what he is made of – though I’m still unsure if he loves Maria more than he loves his play! [From what Tony says I think he’s admitting he’s chosen the play/his work/his career over his love for Maria]

Valentine doesn’t have an answer for Tony, probably because Krutiov hadn’t foreseen Tony doing this and hadn’t given Valentine an instruction! 3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002102402_thumb
Tony and Valentine exchange no more words…
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002103003_thumb
and Tony leaves. The scene ends there.
I wanted to see Krutiov’s reaction!

Night time, we see the black limo driving along  a quiet street.
On the backseat, Lee’s still out of it.
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002111711
Time to do something about that!
Amanda tries to rouse him.3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002114114
Amanda: Lee! Lee!
Lee: Uuuuh.
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002117717
Amanda: Oh thank goodness I thought you’d never wake. up! Can you sit up?3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002123523
Amanda helps Lee up into a less slumped posture.
Lee: Woah that was something real potent.
[Ohhh he was drugged? How?!]3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002123723
Amanda: Take it easy.
(Amanda runs a hand over his hair.)3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002126026
[Partly comfort. Partly to help him rouse some more?.. Any excuse! Winking smile She’s a smart lady!]3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002126526
Lee blinks a few times, trying to adjust his focus..
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002127627
Lee: It’s night,..
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002128728
…where are we?3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002129529
Amanda: I don’t know..
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002132032
…I think we’re heading toward the Blue Ridge.3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002133133
Lee: We gotta get out of here before we reach the Atlantic, then.3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002135335
(Lee wiggles a bit trying to get at his hands behind his back. We see lights from passing vehicles)
Amanda: Yeah, you have a half-rake? [Thanks for transcribing this Karyn! I couldn’t make out what Amanda says here!]
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002137037
(Lee freezes!)3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002137837
Lee: A lock pick?
[This is going to take some getting use to this Amanda having such spy skills and all!]3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002138138
(is it just me or is Lee looking at Amanda’s mouth here?)3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002138838
Amanda: Yeah, a half-rake.3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002139039
Lee looks thoughtful, and changes his posture again leaning toward Amanda to give her easy access. [to the half rake! to the half rake! 😉 ]3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002141741
Lee: Double Diamond in my collar stay…
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002142442
(I do believe Lee licks his lips here as he moves closer Winking smile ) 3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002143043
(Lee kind of chuckles as Amanda works at his collar.)[Incredulous at this turn of events I guess. thoughts? ]3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002144044
….Aw this isn’t going to do any good Amanda.
Amanda gets this pick out of his collar while Lee shifts his cuffs behind his back.
Amanda: I got it.
Lee: These things are so tight, my hands are dead.
[I’m pretty sure being unconscious and sitting on them for hours doesn’t help either!]3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002147347
(Amanda works on her own cuffs. Lee watches on with great interest!)3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002151451

[Yeah!!! good one Lee!]
Amanda: Yeah, what’s he going to do to you.
Lee: I’d settle for grand theft auto aaah ow.3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002164564
[This pic above is ripe for a meme! Especially when we walk through season 1 Lee being mean to Amanda! lol she looks like she’s enjoying it Winking smile
Given Amanda is working on cuffs behind Lee’s back, it would have been hilarious if he’d made a crack about her watching where she puts her hands Winking smile remember magic bus?!]
(Lee’s hands are free, though a bit sore!)
[LOL Lee still hasn’t learned to say thank you huh Winking smile ]3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002165865
Amanda: Sorry. (Amanda rubs his wrist a bit. Lee looks around trying to assess their current situation) [I guess.]
Amanda continues: OK. Let me get the other.3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002169069
(Lee is checking if the door is locked, while Amanda suggests she un cuff his other hand)3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002170070
Lee: Yeah. This thing’s locked from the driver’s seat…
We see a view of the back of Mischa’s head. He’s none the wiser at this breakout that’s under way. 3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002173773
Lee: Got it?3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002175775
Amanda: Yeah, give it a tug. (the other cuff comes off)3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002177777
Lee looks around the compartment to see if there’s anything he can use. 3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002181381
He comes across a corkscrew. [rofl! Mischa left a corkscrew back there??!!! whahahahahahaa!!!!]3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002185785
Lee:  Oh….This will have to do.3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002188388
Amanda: This is a car not a bottle of wine.
[Old Amanda would have said I can’t drink wine now! we need to escape!]
Lee: Huh. [Lee does another one of his half chuckles at Amanda’s response.]3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002193093
Lee gets to work on the drink errr I mean lock…
3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002200800

3.22 ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE.avi_002201901
We cut to nightscapes of DC..
And I shall pause here for the moment..
Can’t wait to hear what you all think! Anyone remember watching this for the first time? what did you think of Tony at this point?

How fabulous is it to see Amanda using her new super spy skills, and Lee seems to enjoy it Smile Amanda is fantastic under pressure – surely this is the all important trait for a super spy to have?! It’s one thing to pick a lock in the office.. but it’s another when your life (and the life of someone you care about)  is at stake I’m guessing..

Anyway, I’ll finish here and look forward to hearing from you!

  1. Regarding how Lee was drugged, the original script on Petra’s site has the line as “He hit me with a hypo of something real potent.”

I’m guessing he injected Lee before getting him out of the car, then helped him over to the limo and if anyone looked confused claimed Lee was drunk and he was trying to help him home. Or maybe pulled the limo up close enough to make it easier, then pulled back to a better position to get Amanda.

  2. I have always loved this scene for what it says about their relationship thus far but I am always distracted by the dialog. I have lived about 50 miles from Arlington VA my entire life in varying locations in Maryland. The Blue Ridge Mountains are at least 100 miles WEST of Arlington and the Atlantic is almost 150 miles to the EAST. Unless the community theater is somewhere in central West Virginia or they plan on circumnavigating the world in the limo this makes no sense. A piece of advice to west coast writers-look at a map!

    1. Bwhahaha Maureen for pointing this out, I’ve missed that line about the Blue Ridge Mountains ostensibly being between Arlington and the Atlantic before this! I guess I too was totally distracted by Amanda and Lee’s relationship advancement. Maybe the community theater was somewhere in my Appalachian Plateau region of Pittsburgh!

      1. Over the years I ignored lots of local references that were puzzling or not quite accurate but I never worried too much about them. To some extent even the rural to suburban transitions made sense at the time. Just 20-30 minutes west of Arlington there are still horse farms in Leesburg and at the time of filming the surrounding areas just outside the capital beltway were still pretty rural. However misplacing Washington DC is egregious. BTW a local would never say “The Atlantic”. We say “the ocean”. 🙂

    2. Oh my goodness, thank you for saying this! It always has bothered me also! If the writers had only looked at DC on a map and gone out in concentric circles instead of playing pin the tail on the donkey with a map to randomly select area names! My biggest hangup with SMK geography comes in Season 4, so can’t wait to get to that one. 🤣

  3. I too love the limo scene. I agree with everything you said, Morley. Sweet moment and weary Lee looks lovely. As to Misha not noticing, I thought the whole premise of a private limo was that it was designed to be highly private for the occupants, so I can believe that he would not be able to hear or see Lee and Amanda with the partition closed. (One wonders why he wouldn’t have opened it at least just a tad though, to keep an eye/ear on things.) Then again, SMK thugs are not generally known for their intelligent thinking.

I agree with the comments that Tony put his work ahead of his relationship, and likely so does Maria. I’m stereotyping, but it is hard to picture a highly logical and technical and motivated-to-the-point-of-being-world-renowned scientist putting a romantic relationship in front of all that. But as was also pointed out, this kind of relationship works for many people quite successfully.

I do think that a similar “scientific” line of thinking is what ruins Krutiov’s plan. I think he took a highly logical approach but did not accurately factor Tony’s feelings towards Maria into the plan. I can picture him standing behind the door totally dumbfounded as his carefully orchestrated equation broke down. He was so confident he had everything worked out and under control — but there is no accounting for what feelings will drive one to do.

  4. I really like the scenes in this post – both baddies and Lee/Amanda in the wine bottle limo.

Valentine is the worst of the lot, imho. Tony makes this horrendous choice to betray the woman he loves because he loves something else more, but at least he knows it and he takes the responsibility here. I’m guessing he already knows he won’t be seeing Maria for any more hotel trysts. Should he live a long life, he’ll be very unhappy for the rest of his sorry life. I think he’ll regret this more than anything else. I just get the feeling that he is not rotten to the core, but rather unable to resist the temptation Valentine has laid before him. He knows what he’s doing is wrong and a terrible betrayal, but he chooses to do it anyway (remind anyone else out there of The Thorn Birds?). I also like the fact that Tony is not a wimp. He is taking control of the tape and is doing what he can to keep Maria safe. I guess Valentine is just a weak wimp who does not own his actions and is very afraid of getting killed (love his line “They’re gonna kill you, they’re gonna kill ME!” at least he delivers that one very well). Krutiov is just an evil, manipulative, bas….

I do live this Amanda/Lee time together. Lee looks very comfy there lying against Amanda. Notice he doesn’t complain about a sore neck  Love, love that Amanda gets to show off her new lock picking skills and terminology. She doesn’t ask for a lock pick. She knows the proper term. Also love that Lee acknowledges her skills, and although he is surprised, he is not that surprised that she is successful. I love all the touching going on here and that neither of them seems to mind 

  5. Amanda’s response to Lee about the corkscrew was great. I love her little zingers, especially when she throws them at Lee. And she knows how he loves his wine.

  6. I do really like that little bit in the limo. I love the way Amanda strokes Lee’s hair and he just lets her as he comes to. I love the little bit with the half rake in his collar stay, that he has one there, that she knows it. I love the way he watches her and is amazed by her. I am so glad you took the screen shots of the moment that he looks at her lips. I bet right now in their relationship that there are many moments when Lee would like to be able to express to Amanda his deep feelings for her and his intense attraction to her, its got to be huge for him, and here maybe because he is coming off of some drugs. But I love the way that is all still just there barely below the surface and they both continue on and find away to free themselves. Here is a glimpse into what Scarecrow and Mrs King are going to be like together. Love it!

    1. I love everything you wrote there, Morley. Beautifully said.

Just recently, I couldn’t stop thinking about a scene, at night, in a limo that showed Amanda being super sweet to Lee. I even remembered they were handcuffed and that Amanda had just gotten a lesson about getting out of handcuffs. But, for the life of me I couldn’t remember what episode it was from. I stewed over it for about a week and finally asked ClagJanet if she knew what episode the scene was in. Of course, she knew it is from ATWAS,?and I have since watched this lovely little scene over and over.

I love their comfortable closeness in the scene, the way she runs her hand through his hair like it’s the most natural and caring thing to do… and it is. I also love that they are calm, cool, and collected because they work best as a team.

  7. Lee seems to look a lot older in this scene. I think the plaid shirt is playing havoc with my eyes. The fluffy puffy marshmallow white cardigan Amanda is wearing isn’t helping either.

    1. Its funny, but I really like the way he looks here. I like it that he looks old and tired, but he still looks good. I especially like the way he is out on Amanda’s shoulder and how she strokes his hair. They look so comfortable and close… even though they have bee drugged, cuffed and kidnapped…

  8. So I’m not 100% on board with Tony at this point. He is still going to give them the tape after the play the next night. It seems that there are some kind of national US secrets on this tape headed for the Russians – isn’t that treasonous? (Well, it was in the 1980’s, not so much now I guess, eh Trumpty Dumpty 😦 although the irony is that the US does seem to be living inside some kind of neo-absurdist play right now.)
But getting back to Tony, he also seems to be still okay, if a little regretful, that he had to dope his girlfriend to get the info.
That’s a *fail” Tony. He’s going to have to come up with a sensationally good excuse to get back on the right side of this sorry situation.

    1. I’m with you Kiwismh,
I think I said earlier – he never should have even considered going along with this.. and there was initially no threat to Tony’s life nor Marias. So overall, Tony has already failed in my eyes as boyfriend material..

This keeping the tape till after the performance has Tony getting a backbone, however – while he cares about Maria, and is motivated by keeping her safe (likely), his main motivation is IMHO still the play.
His work is his true partner in life I think.. it’s his heart and soul- and he lost his soul we could say – because of what he did to Maria and to his country in order to keep his one true love- that neo absurdist play! Mon Dieu! Mon Dieu!

I think Maria’s extremely work-centric too.. and maybe that’s why they were together.. it worked for them. Before Krutiov came along! Muahahaha!

I think what Tony has done crosses a line that can’t be uncrossed and forgotten..
      Okay gotta run- bye!

      1. Tony has behaved very badly, but I agree with Iwsod that at least he is “owning” his behaviour. He may have got a conscience too late, but he’s trying to at least improve the situation for Maria bit.

I think you made a good case for both Tony and Maria being work-centric. And they’re not unusual in that – plenty of people put family and friends below their career ambitions (it could be argued that most people who’ve made spectacular contributions to art, literature and science have done this…). Not how I’d chose to live my life though.

  9. Commercial and scene breaks are so useful, don’t you think? For the writers I mean, not for us. I mean, I want to see that scene. Did Misha sneak up on Lee in the ‘Vette, jab him with the potent stuff and then drag him back to the limo in broad daylight across the street? Did he get help from those little girls in the bikes? Or did he pull the same map stunt as Lee was headed into the house to see if Amanda needed help with an ornery zipper? (Oh hello gutter, it’s been awhile…)

And since I’m already down here, enjoying the ample cheese wine and of course, the company, we now have the current champion for my favorite line to use out of context:
    “Got it?”
“Yeah, just give it a tug.”

Words to live by Amanda – remember them for later.

    1. So true Clagjanet – so many questions left unanswered!!!

Umm I think Mischa must have come up with some kind of a ruse to get Lee right next to the limo and then he drugged him. A bit like he did with Amanda.. What the ruse was I don’t know.. umm
“hey I like your car! Do you know anything about the engines? Mine’s not starting! help?! “

  10. Of all the truly terrible gaffes the writers made with geography, this one is all my all time fave:

“…I think we’re heading toward the Blue Ridge”
“We gotta get out of here before we reach the Atlantic, then.”

Say what? The Blue Ridge Mountains are south-west of Washington and the Atlantic is very east of it. Nothing like a really good blooper to take you right out of the moment.

      Blue ridge mountains, Shenandoah river…
Love that song 🙂 and it’s also the reason even a New Zealander knows that if you’re headed to Blue Ridge via DC then you’re probably not headed towards the Atlantic.
Hey, may be they’re headed back to the country club for some tennis ala Playing for Keeps.
I agree with others, let’s put it down to drug induced confusion.

    2. Whoohoo, I am so excited that you, Clagjanet, and Kiwismh caught the geography flub! I grew up in VA in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mts. and that line always bugs me. It shows that they didn’t research enough, but they do redeem themselves in season 4.

      Like

      1. forget research! It shows none of them actually took high school geography, let alone US history in grade school. My 7 and 9 year olds could tell you that heading from Dc towards the Blue Ridge Mts would take you away from the Atlantic. Lewis and Clark and the Louisiana Purchase, anyone? I love SMK, but I think this one blooper always messes with me. There are no mental gymnastics for this one. Sorry.

I think she saves that one as an absolute last resort.. better to wake Lee and check if he has a half rake first. (drat. But hey, Lee can’t have his trousers falling down all the time like a buffoon he’s a super spy!) 🙂

He’s sitting – well, ok., half lying – on them. They won’t fall down. After uncuffing herself Amanda could have but the belt back on his trousers. So everything would be ok. 😉

Hmmm… ‘Better to wake Lee…’ for hours after they got kidnaped? Amanda had at least some hours at her hands and did nothing? Ehhhm… Well, nothing but watching unconscious Lee?

            1. Yeah, I think she’s been preoccupied with getting him to regain consciousness and maybe hasn’t thought about the belt because she’s concerned about him. It sounds (and looks from the sky) that he’s been unconscious for quite a while.

    1. I would like to respectfully disagree. When I watched the episode, I could see the sheen of light on the partition a couple of times. I don’t think it’s as easily seen in these pics. Not that TPTB are capable of ridiculous screw-ups (a la Blue Ridge/Atlantic), but I do think the partition is up.

Ooops, that’s what I thought, too. I never assumed them as a ‘look-through-window’…
Mischa should have noticed anyway. He might not have heard them, but he should have been able to see them. Or is that partition made of one-way glass – so just Lee and Amanda (and we) can see unsuspicious Mischa and have a good laugh at his expense?
