2/15 Season Four Episode Four: No Thanks for the Memory–Scarecrow and Mrs King

So, on to the Cumberland hotel.. which I’m guessing is no longer the Cumberland hotel!
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000291858
We hear a voice inside: Once we have Looking Glass safely inside Cuban airspace, America’s strategic command and control system will be knocked out… 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000301534
(Janet has identified this guy as Tolst- the guy who Zhmed would get in trouble from if he was heard speaking Russian)
…It’ll be months before they can repair the shambles. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000307540[Sheesh! they are already crippled by Stemwinder! The Russians don’t rest! 🙂 ]

Man identified as ‘Lvov’: No kidding, but getting your hands on Air Force documents is damn risky. Too many problems. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000308708
[you call that risky?! How about getting your hands on the tie Lee was wearing when Lee and Amanda finally officially became a romantic couple at the end of All the World’s a Stage?! Rolf!
Lvov, give Lee back his tie! that one is special!!!]
Tolst: I never think in terms of problems, only solutions.4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000313880 [That is why I am the boss and you are not! Winking smile  Muahahahaa!]
…Enter Zhmed Doorlof,…
[Whoo! Visual aids!] (Tolst turns over the page on his little booklet presentation..)
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000317050
… my ace in the hole. His mind is all I need.

Lvov: Don’t try and con us, Tolst. Your plan down the tubes before it starts…
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000326393
We cut to one of the other men at the table listening, he doesn’t seem to mind Lvov taking Tolst to task. Who exactly is the boss here? lol..
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000331898
…Your memory whiz, your ace in the hole is a patient in an Arlington hospital and your driver is dead. Forget it.

[Whooo what a little upstart! ]
Tolst:  No one ever tells me when my operations are working…. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000338238
[Tolst pushes back. Sounding pretty threatening, but Lvov doesn’t seem to care- he has on his special tie 😉 ] 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000338738
…Believe me, we don’t have a thing to worry about. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000346413

Tolst leaves. And the scene ends..

He sounds ummm.. determined.. but not sure he has convinced the others.. I’m thinking Lvov was maybe superior to Tolst, at least equal.. This is Tolst’s operation, but it is at least clear to me Tolst is on thin ice – and his compatriots don’t have much confidence in him. So, Tolst is determined, has something to prove, and he’s a man with a mission – his own butt is on the line I think!

What’s your impression of these baddies?

Ah! I’ve remembered where I saw this exterior shot of where this baddie HQ is… it was used in Welcome to America Mr Brand – it’s the baddie Clayton-Dobbs’ Estate, and we saw it when we went to the garden party in post 8 Smile The same cars are there and everything!

Moving on and to the hospital! Ooooh Rofl! 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000349582
Another re-used exterior shot!
They’ve used that exterior shot from Odds on a Dead Pigeon again! that’s Karen and Gordon in that blue sedan [NP5 820] staking out the hospital waiting for Lee to visit Amanda haaaaa..

We cut to a tv screen.. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000354587
(We find Zhmed sitting up in bed flicking through something.. a telephone book maybe. )
Zhmed: Maverick would know what to do with KGB. I wish I did. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000357424
(Zhmed finds what he is looking for.. we see a close up.
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000362095
The state department.)
[Anyone want to call? 667 – 4000!]
(He circles the number..)
[Why would you circle it? someone can come along and see it circled later no?!
Hmm.. seems Zhmed is wanting to get away from the KGB.. and approach the US government for help huh.. ]
(Here comes Amanda the bluebell!!
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000367267
She knocks on his door.)
[I love how we think Zhmed can’t get away from the KGB, they are everywhere!!! But, here in the US, in walks Amanda –a government agent.. and he has no idea..
The US is not dissimilar! but.. it does have real chocolate and real nougat! Smile ]

(Zhmed puts to one side his book with his state dept number as Amanda enters.)
Amanda: Good morning Mr. Stringell! I’m Amanda King from the Ladies Auxiliary.
(Amanda shows him her badge.)
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000372939
[These days she has loads of those Winking smile
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000374941
Zhmed looks at a loss.. Ummm what’s a ladies auxillary?]
Mr. Stringell? 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000376443
Zhmed: I am Eric Stringell of Helsinki, Finland. Hello. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000379879
[lol clearly Zhmed is not trained to lie well Winking smile ]
Amanda: Yes I know and I’m Amanda King with the Ladies Auxiliary. Now it’s my job to make sure that you’re just as comfortable as possible while you’re here… 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000386219
(As she speaks, she puts a basket of flowers on his table.)
[LOL so he’s comfortable Winking smile … Zhmed just looks at it like what they heck?]
…So if you need any books, magazines, candy, stationary, I’m the one to see.

Zhmed: I’ll take a candy bar?
[This week’s episode is brought to us by American Candy Bars!]

Amanda: Oh sure. Why don’t you take two?
(She puts them down in front of him)
Zhmed: I have some American money here somewhere.
Amanda: No, no, no, you just think of it as a gift from the Ladies Auxiliary… 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000403069
[Zhmed is well chuffed!]4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000403903

…Well, I’m awfully sorry about your accident but I hear from the nurses outside that you’re going to be out of here in no time. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000411578
[rofl. I love to hear of nurses disclosing confidential information! Winking smile  Amanda oozes warmth and kindness – this assignment is so her! ]

Zhmed: Yes, I was very lucky and everyone here has been super, thank you.
Amanda: Well, that’s good. You know, I was in Finland in ’83. I certainly did enjoy the Savonlinna Music Festival. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000424424
Zhmed:  Well, I’m not really much of a supporter of our local folk music…
[Zhmed sounds vague..]
( we see Amanda react: Wrong answer!)4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000430764
[But in a don’t let him see you know it’s wrong kind of way Winking smile ]
..I prefer the classical pieces.

Amanda: Oh. Well I would think you would enjoy the Savonlinna. It features opera…  4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000435935
[Oopsie.. Zhmed realises he’s stuffed it up. If only he had studied facts about Helsinki to get his cover right too! He has the flippin memory for it!]
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000439773
…Of course, I know you have many things on your mind…
[Amanda does a great job of not seeming to be a threat]
…I’m really very sorry about the death of your friend… 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000444944
[Ohhh he died huh.. stay away from random ramps in the middle of the road! Seems these nurses have well and truly filled Amanda in on his accident!! 😉 ]4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000445945
…Is your Embassy helping you with that?
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000452452
Zhmed: I did not know him that well. The tour group in Helsinki put us together…
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000454788
…But the Ambassador did come to see me about him. From Finland. I mean, the Finnish one.

[LOL as opposed to the Russian one?! tee hee]
Amanda: Oh it’s alright. I know what you mean.
Zhmed: My English is not very good. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000462462
Amanda: Aww, your English is just terrific. It’s a lot better than my Finnish. You have an … unusual accent.
Zhmed quickly: I’m from the north. North Finland…
(Amanda just knowingly smiles and silently lets him dig a hole Winking smile)
…Almost Lapland. I’m really a Lapp. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000473973
Amanda: It’s funny. I was told you were from Helsinki. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000477143
[my my, those nurses can talk Winking smile ]
Zhmed: Now. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000482148
[He quickly grabs what I guess is the world’s biggest tv remote control. rofl. and turns the tv on to cover up his bad lies!]
Amanda: Oh.
Zhmed: We watch a lot of American television. The old Westerns are my favourite. Isn’t that Maverick?
Amanda: Oh yes. That’s Maverick alright. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000490657
Voices on TV: “Why’d you do it Red?”// “Sometimes a fella’s just has to go for it”
Zhmed: Sometimes a fellow’s just has to go for it…. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000496996
(Zhmed cracks himself up copying the accent and the line!)
[Although why someone would say that line when there is a screen shot of cattle running across a screen I don’t know!]
…Oh that’s great. Such an American thing to say. I’ve learned so much from Bart and Bret and Brent.

Amanda: Mmmm and Beauregard, their English cousin.  Oh yeah, there’s a fourth Maverick.
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000508174
[I have no idea if this is for real! And.. don’t really care! Winking smile ]
Zhmed: Beauregard?
Amanda:  Mm-hmm. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000513680
[lol this makes Zhmed’s day!… Something he didn’t know?! cool!!]
Zhmed: That’s great. That little bit of trivia will keep me in beer all winter…
(Zhmed pauses a second and then adds with sideways glance:  )
….in Helsinki.
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000518685
Amanda: Yes. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000520687
Knowing Amanda just smiles… Uh huhhhhhh….

The scene ends here… and I shall pause here too.

Sooo what do you all make of this? do tell!
Zhmed is certainly a quirky guy with a thirst for quirky American facts!

I think Amanda does a great job here! She certainly did a fantastic job squeezing all that confidential information out of the nurses Winking smile

Can’t wait to hear from ya!

  1. Why is it so bad Amanda knew the patient’s condition and shared it? She works at the hospital and it was his condition, so he definitely had a right to know. And all she said/implied she knew was that he was getting better and would be released soon. That wasn’t very sensitive or embarrassing.

    1. I think what iswod was saying is that Amanda managed to get some personal and medical information out of the nurses that should probably have been treated as confidential to the patient. She’s not a real employee of the hospital, and I highly doubt she regularly volunteers there as a “Bedside Bluebell” anymore, what with being a full-time agent now. She’s just posing as a random volunteer with the “Ladies’ Auxiliary,” and the nurses have probably never seen her before. So it is impressive that she was able to charm so much information out of them (and I agree with iswod, this was probably not something they are supposed to talk about with random volunteers who come around to pass out goodies). But yeah, once she actually had the information, there’s nothing wrong with what she said to Zhmed about it.

      1. I vaguely remember this lol. Yep- what peacockdancer said 🙂 [Thanks peacockdancer!]

I’m not very good at consistently remembering details even if I may have dived deep into something in the past aie!
Unless I’m currently walking through the episode.
Probably one of the reasons why I prefer to to do a walk through.
I think my brain has a set amount of space put aside for smk and it won’t stretch or exceed it – at this point it’s pretty fixed. rofl! 🙂

        1. Oh thanks Peacock Dancer. That makes sense.

IWSOD I know the feeling. My brain is good at saving SMK and gymnastics information but not as much for other stuff!

  2. Oh my goodness, Amandarambler the music nerd had a music moment. I caught something new on this episode tonight while watching it!! The music playing on the episode of “Maverick” that Zhmed is watching is SMK music!!! Like not the theme, but one of the interludes they use during episodes. It’s like the tried to western it up a little in the texture. But it’s definitely SMK! And I’m wondering if BB is one of the voices from the “show” when it says “Sometimes a fella just has to go for it.”

  3. Somebody help me! I’m confused about the Cumberland. We have this one from Weekend that gets recycled and is now Tolst’s place, but didn’t they also stay at the Cumberland in Triumvirate? Same place? Different? Related somehow?

    1. It was the Cumberland in Triumvirate but they used the exterior of a massive hotel in LA for that one. The two Cumberlands were supposed to be different places though.

The scriptwriters enjoyed using the same names over and over – just look at all the Alans! (Not to mention the two Sinclairs, the two Rostovs, the two Harrys, the two Dorothys…)

      1. Ok, thanks clagjanet. I think I understand now. I guess I hadn’t caught that they had reused the name Cumberland so I kept getting tripped up and then thinking I was thinking of the wrong place.

  4. It’s really nice to see Amanda doing an excellent job here. This Zhmed character is very easy though. Well, at least she’s off to a really good start!

I wonder if she chose the hospital Blue Bell/Ladies Auxiliary cover herself? I’m guessing she did. Must have pulled her uniform from storage and had it freshly pressed 😉

  5. My father loves westerns and they were big on TV back in the 50s and 60s. Maverick was one of his favorite shows. James Garner was the lead before a contract dispute let to Roger Moore coming on. There is also the Maverick movie. Love how Amanda easily trips up this guy. She knows how to Class C interrogate someone pretty well.

  6. Hi all! Sorry I’ve not been here much…
The Last Jedi opened this week and it’s taken up all my spare time – poor smk has suffered.. Of course JWWM is not the place to discuss this.. but there is a thread over at Nedlindger’s if anyone is interested in discussing..
with the holiday season approaching – we will continue the walk but it is going to be a slower pace.
Hope that is okay – and well wishes to everyone, hope the holiday plans are coming along nicely!

  7. Can’t believe I didn’t check it while transcribing but I have now…the State Department’s After Hours info desk number actually is 202-647-4000!

I guess Zhmed is so used to everyone in the the USSR knowing everything about you that he doesn’t even question how Amanda knows so much already – but perhaps since he doesn’t understand what a hospital volunteer does, he just assumes she would know all this because she works there?

  8. NOOOOO! Not THE tie! That one should be lovingly placed in a shadow box and displayed in a prominent place in the SMK hall of fame and not tossed back into a wardrobe drawer to be used by a random baddy. I guess it would be worse if it were Joe that was wearing it.

    1. “… not tossed back into a wardrobe drawer to be used by a random baddy. I guess it would be worse if it were Joe that was wearing it.”

The only drawer it should be in is Amanda’s lingerie drawer. She can wear or drape it around her neck on the anniversary of their first not-while-under-cover passionate kiss — or whenever she’s wanting to entice Lee to … do it again!

      Like

    2. I’m pretending it’s not the same tie. Lee’s was carefully selected, because he wanted to impress Amanda that day. His tie is safely tucked away or (Nancy’s theory) Amanda took it off of Lee and decided to hold onto it. Lee wanted her to be happy, so that’s that. I hope she took the shirt too. 🙂 😉

Lvov just happens to shop at the same place. Spilled mustard on his tie at lunch and wandered into that store for a new tie. No idea where he got that jacket though (fashion police????)

    3. Or thinking it was from evil Ava…that would explain how a Russian has one – could have been state issued to KGB staff.

  9. Lvov: “…Your memory whiz, your ace in the hole is a patient in an Arlington hospital …”

So if Zhmed has such a great memory, why does he circle the U.S. State Department phone number? Makes abso-tively posi-lutely NO SENSE!

Looked on imdb, iwsod. Amanda was spot on. There was a Beauregard Maverick (played by Roger Moore) for 16 of the 83 episodes.

Went to the Pori Jazz Festival in Finland, but not the Savonlinna. Checked that out, too. Amanda is correct that the Savonlinna Festival is primarily opera.
