4/15 Season Four Episode Four: No Thanks for the Memory

Before we continue.. Just want to prepare you – I’ve reconsidered things.. and the blog is going to pause over the holidays for just a few weeks. Read on and I’ll provide more detail at the end of this post.

We immediately cut to unhappy Beaman in Billy’s office. In a corner 😉 lol. I don’t know why but it’s funny to find him there sulking 😉 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000621154_thumb
Beaman: She issued a Flash Priority to order three surveillance teams!…4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000624324_thumb
(Beaman is heated! The shot widens and we see Billy and Lee. Lee seems to be adjusting his cufflink.)
[Why so emotional Beaman?!]
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000624824_thumb
…Mrs. King is a freshman candidate… 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000626159_thumb
(Hearing this, Lee is seen to take a deep breath and let it out.. rah rah.. Billy seems pretty unmoved!)
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000627327_thumb
And I’m telling you I don’t care if she followed the patient or not.
(rofl. Billy just kind of half nods)
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000630497_thumb
[I think he’s not really listening, he’s wondering how soon before he can go get his morning donut]
(We cut back to Lee and Beaman.)
[Lee is starting to get fed up with this rant.]
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000630997_thumb
…Since I’ve been supervisor, not one freshman agent has ever used Flash Priority.
[rofl. this could mean Beaman is a poor supervisor Winking smile ]
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000633099_thumb
(Lee’s cheek muscle is grinding away now!)
[The finger pointing at Billy is quite curious. Beaman is really wanting to assert himself here. I don’t think Billy gives a toss.. at least.. I hope he doesn’t!]
(to finish, Beaman turns to Lee and points this last line at him!)
…  Most of them don’t know it exists.
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000635935_thumb
Lee: Oh come on Beaman!
(Whooo hooooo Lee lets him have it!)
…Amanda King has more experience than half the operatives in the Agency!.. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000639606_thumb
(
Beaman doesn’t seem to be able to disagree with this fact)
[I’m impressed at how well Lee can do the pretend to be strangers thing at work. Calling her ‘Amanda King’ is a great distancing move!]
…She knows what she’s doing…4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000641608_thumb
[Love how Lee says this so matter of fact it’s final. No arguments that Amanda knows what she is doing.. It’s Beaman’s turn to look a bit crestfallen!  Who doesn’t love seeing Lee back Amanda up professionally??!!!]
… Now did we send her the team?
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000643109_thumb
Billy: We sent it. [Good Billy, now Amanda is his boss too haaaa.. just kidding Winking smile ]4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000644444_thumb
She said they were speaking Russian.
Beaman: Russian?!!!4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000647280_thumb
(This is just absurd to Beaman!)
[Has this man read her file?!]
…She’s had some training but she’s not fluent.
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000649115_thumb
[Check out the body language!
We don’t all have to be fluent in body English to see what’s going on here! Smile
Uhh even I know you can recognise a language even if you are not fluent in it. Back to school for you Beaman!]
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000650283_thumb
Lee:  She’s heard enough of it in the field … from the bad guys themselves!  4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000650950_thumb
[Seems Beaman can’t argue with that. I’m questioning how many bad guys Beaman has seen in the field!
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000653253_thumb
Billy reacts with a well there you go! kind of expression.. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000653753_thumb
Almost proud our papa Billy!]4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000656089_thumb
…You’ve just got to treat her differently….4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000657590_thumb
…She is not one of your kids. And most of the time she guesses right.
(Lee gives Billy a nod as if to underline his point.)
Beaman: I give her quite a bit of slack…4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000661594_thumb
[Beaman is getting defensive! and Lee’s cheek is still grinding away! BJo will be happy to see it make an appearance haaa Smile Merry Christmas BJo! 😉 ]4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000662929_thumb
…It makes it difficult for me with the others if she takes too much.
(hearing this, Lee just kind of groans at how lame this is.)
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000664764_thumb
[I’ll second this! Beaman comes off looking like a dill. What’s he so emotional about? He can’t manage his classroom! That’s what he’s emotional about!! booo hoo!! How Beaman looks to his class is what is important!
Well IMHO easy fixed. He just tells the class Amanda King is a clearance code all of her own, she has her own KGB file and has already been hunted down by two different Russian KGB agents (Gregory and Alexi Makarov.  Zinoiev doesn’t count, he thought she was scarecrow! ) Oh.. three! if you include Serdeyich. And heck. there are probably many more! rofl!
– so unless her classmates can boast the same they should just button it and mind their manners 😉 Practice the concept of ‘need to know’ people! ]
(Ah! phone buzzes.. )
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000667934_thumb
Billy: Melrose here…
(Billy listens silently.. enthralled!
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000668935_thumb
He gets a real glint in his eye as he finishes the call. His expressions crack me up here!)4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000672939_thumb
….I’ll send Scarecrow out immediately…
(We cut back to Lee fixing his tie, he knows this means Amanda was right on the money/Rubles.)
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000674107_thumb
…This time her instincts were right on target …
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000678611_thumb
[Awh Proud Lee is happy Amanda was on the money. suck on that Beaman!]
…Stringell is very popular… 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000680447_thumb
…We’re watching … so is the KGB.

(Lee gives Beaman a slap on the arm)4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000687454_thumb
Lee: Well, face it Beaman, now and then you gotta bend the rules, get the job done. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000687954_thumb
(Lee heads for the door)4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000688621_thumb
Beaman: In your case, quite a bit more now then then. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000693126_thumb
[Umm I know this is supposed to be a dig at Lee.. and this is supposed to be a rule follower vs a rule breaker. but.. can someone translate what the heck Beaman is saying here?! I’m at a loss. Lee is breaking more rules now? and what’s he comparing to? it’s not like Lee was once his student? or is this just a random reference that implies a tense history between these two? maybe that’s it? anyone? thoughts? ]
(Lee doesn’t respond. Instead Billy interjects himself. He stands up and says…)

Billy: May I have my office back please? 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000696129_thumb
Oh okay. since you asked so nicely- Boss! Smile 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000696629_thumb
No more words are exchanged.. and both Lee and Beaman leave the office. The scene ends there.

It’s a really interesting take on things to see how Amanda’s experience makes her unique to other student agents starting out. It certainly puts things into perspective! She’s more experienced than half the agents there!! And.. has had many run ins with ‘bad guys’ rofl how Lee says that!

And.. isn’t it fabulous to see Lee basically advocating for her. Standing up for her – but he’s doing it IMHO from a professional standpoint – it’s because she’s really good at what she does and has the experience. Isn’t it wonderful to hear how highly Lee respects Amanda as a professional? I love that!!

It doesn’t matter that she doesn’t fit into Beaman’s neat little box. I think Leatherneck should take over Amanda’s training Winking smile haaaaaa.. that would have been fun, as it seemed he did have some knowledge of Lee’s own training….

And.. interesting that Billy doesn’t really insert himself into this debate. He gives Lee the space to defend Amanda. I was hoping Billy would take Beaman down a notch here but no. He instead left it to Lee.. Catharsis maybe 😉 but whatev good someone said it!

Moving on.. we cut to… ahhh that hotel! ummm what’s the name of this hotel? 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000700300
This was the hotel that The Chin stayed in in A Lovely Little Affair (the Hotel Sherman). Did we see it anywhere else?

Lee enters the foyer and joins Amanda drinking tea at a table. (or drinking coffee? Maybe coffee 😉 )4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000711978
Lee: Nice going. This is the first Class C interrogation in history to turn into a full scramble. 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000717817
[LOL I don’t think Lee really minds.
He’s just thinking it’s so Amanda! What do you think?
What a coincidence that we had the same exterior where she met The Chin -Alan Chamberlain for a cappuccino. Wasn’t that a class C interrogation? Unofficially? Which turned into a scramble?]
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000719152
Amanda: Well, don’t thank me, thank the Russians… 4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000720987
…The guy at the bar in the grey suit’s KGB.
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000721654
[Lee turns to take a look. Oh Rofl! – don’t look! Remember that old gag? would have been fabulous if Amanda had turned the tables on Lee here and told him off for turning and looking and looking! Winking smile ]4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000723990
This guy!
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000724324
Lee: huh. Just one of their monkeys posing as an Embassy chauffeur. Where’s your friend from Finland?  [not! Winking smile ]4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000732999
Amanda: In the restroom, been in there a couple of minutes.
4.04 NO THANKS FOR THE MEMORY.avi_000733166
Lee
: Rear exit?
Amanda: Kitchen. Covered.
Lee quietly nods..

Amanda’s such a pro now! I need to get use to this! Though happily, Lee seems use to it enough Smile

Okay guys.. I shall pause here.. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!!!

I also want to let you know that I’ve reconsidered things and I’m going to put the walk on hold for a few weeks until the new year. The holidays are too busy… many of our community seem busy.. and it’s a good time to take a break.

We’ll pick up again right here in the new year. Smile

  1. The hand holding/dropping/holding segment is one of my best favorites!

Something else I’ve always thought played into Beaman and his attitude here is that on his first episode, they said he’d been there two years, which would have been the same amount of time as Amanda. Obviously he came up through the normal ranks, unlike her. From what we can tell he started in Fabrications, probably got transferred after he screwed up with Harry Thornton’s I.D., got the chance to help with a field op when Lee had to wear the wire on Boy Who Could Be King, then seems to have been transferred out of the field again after that debacle and pushed back to helping train other agents.

Meanwhile Amanda had NO training and essentially got promoted to full time field agent (in practice not official status) from the beginning. She’s worked some of the biggest cases and has at least 60 field ops to her credit give or take (I don’t remember off hand which ones ended up not being official cases like Unfinished Business or like Stemwinder where Part 1 was a “case” and then Part 2 she WAS the case). I think he’s particularly jealous since she joined The Agency at the same time he did.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 My thought process, exactly, Iwsod.

Also, I love Billy’s expressions in this scene! He was just the best. 😁

  3. Billy: ….I’ll send Scarecrow out immediately…,

to go where? Billy never said where to find Amanda.
All he knows is, she was at the hospital, visiting/interrogating Mr. Stringell from Helsinki, Finnland. And now Lee finds her sitting in the Sherman, drinking some coffee while waiting for him.
    How did he find her?
Does he have some kind of degree in ‘mind reading’? Some kind of a private homing device to track her moves? 🤔

  4. Hi Everyone!
Just wanted to say a big Hiya!!!
I’m still alive.. lol.. and I’ve been taking a break from JWWM over the holidays. The old motivation to linger over Lee and Amanda will kick in again soon I am sure.
for now, I’m still taking a break – have a few big changes coming up over the coming weeks and it’s likely once I’m over that hump I’ll be back and the walk can continue.

Thanks to all who stop by – who help out with transcribing.. send likes, share comments.. I just wanted you to know I’ve not forgotten JWWM and you lovely folks: and I’ll be back!!! 🙂 I’ll update you when I know more. Bye!
    Happy 2018 everyone!!!

    1. Hope you’re enjoying the long days of surf, sun and summer fun in the Land Down Under, iwsod! Those of us Up Over Land folks are keeping the home fires warm and cozy, while we make the most of outdoor winter fun, during these shorter days, to avoid succumbing to the dreaded cabin fever. Wishing the joy of family and friends, good health, financial stability and lots of superb interactions among everyone coming along for JWWM in 2018!

  5. The break has been nice to get caught up…real life caused me to have to stop during Stemwinder part 1 🙁

Nice to see that Beaman got promoted from fabrications (I’m watching season 3 with the kids) to teaching the Freshman class (looks like Amanda’s not the only one moving up 😉)

Love Lee in the scene with Beaman! Lee’s came a long way from season 1.

I agree that Lee is thinking that a simple class C interrogation turning into full scramble is do Amanda. So nice to see that she can tell Lee who all the key players are for a change….ROFL that Lee looks around to the guy at the bar. It would have been funny if Amanda had of hissed at him not to look.

  6. You also have to wonder if Beaman’s comment about giving her slack might also be with how often Lee pulls her out of class to help him, Could it be that he’s less annoyed with Amanda who probably does wonders for his classes’ grade curve and more annoyed with Lee who seems to be taking a perverse glee in winding him up here? He might be feeling a bit like those teachers who are told to keep giving a student good grades so they can still be on an athletic team but with the added frustration that she’s most likely getting good grades without the slack she’s granted.

I don’t know why exactly, the nerd in me just kind of sympathizes with him just a smidge. 😀

  7. Oh my, how times have changed! Lee is really standing up for Amanda here! She’s experienced, know’s what she’s doing, oh, but wait!!!! Oh Lee!! Why are you saying most of the time she guesses right??? You can do better than that! Billy gets it right though. Amanda has instincts not guesses. 🙂

Hehehe…yes, iwsod, I do love Lee’s flexing masseter 😀 Merry Christmas to you too! And a Happy New Year!! I am SO happy to be at the beginning of a new year! (Thanks for the shout out 🙂 )

Loved your “Amandaramble” about how Beaman can fix his classroom management 😉

Hmm, I’m wondering if Beaman’s reference has to do with Amanda? She went from part-time temp to automatic freshman candidate? I’m guessing she didn’t have to go through the prelim steps the others had to go through because the Agency knows Amanda King inside and out by now between Spiderweb and the Stems. And I’m guessing Lee’s maybe bent the rules more to get allowances for her because she is special to him? His former official unofficial partner?

As far as Billy goes, I think he was reserving judgement until they heard back from the team that was sent out. If Amanda had not been right, I think Billy would have mollified Beaman and told Lee to talk to Amanda. My guess if Billy thought there was at least a 50/50 chance Amanda was right.

  8. Love Lee here and his unadulterated support of Amanda. Beaman has to accept the Amanda comes into training in a unique position because of her hands-on experiences. While she was supposed to be only civilian support she has turned in to much more. Beaman is coming to realize how much more.

I’m glad I was able to catch up with the walk. I promised myself that once I made it through Christmas Day this would be a present to myself. So I’ve been in pajamas and drinking coffee as I play catch up.

I hope that everyone is well and that you are having a joyous holiday!!

    1. Hi valeriejw – so glad you caught up. I only just managed myself and I needed till New Year’s.

Yep – Beaman is just going to have to get used to Amanda – she is not going to be like any of his other freshman candidates. I bet she could do some of his training segments for him. Or at least write his speech 😀

  9. Ah, the trope gods are happy once more – we’ve introduced someone to be snippy about Lee, Amanda and Lee&Amanda. We’ve seen Dirk come and go in Season 1, we have Dr. Smyth playing super bad guy, we’ve had Francine go from complete put down to occasional grudging compliment to throwing caution to the winds to help Billy out with clearing their names in Stemwinder. (I don’t expect that to last, but there’s no denying she’s often nicer to Amanda these days.) And now we have poor Efraim Beaman, the latest in a long line to be set up as the stick-up-the-butt rules guy who is annoyed by our heroes’ antics.

I particularly like Beaman who is another one of those Agency characters who fill in for every job. Leatherneck runs the motorpool (Eyes have it), the gun range (“At least shoot the ceiling, Mrs. King”) and the equipment depot (Wrong way home); Beaman runs the Fabrication lab (Weasel) , wires guys up for drops (Boy/King) and now apparently is the senior officer in charge of training? Who are all those other people in the Agency hallways when obviously every important job is concentrated down to three or four key personnel who are everywhere at once? At least we know Francine has Mancine for when she has to double up on being Billy’s assistant and a fake hooker.

I think he probably does harbor some resentment that Amanda doesn’t get treated like other trainees, and it would look very much to most people at the Agency, I’m sure, that she’s getting preferential treatment because of Lee, and then to the logical assumption that she’s his girlfriend-of-the-week. If she is mixed in with a bunch of junior trainees for some reason, it must be very aggravating to try and teach to the average student and then have Amanda thrown into the mix with ridiculous amounts of hands-on training and not nearly enough systemic training.

It does beg the question though of how they deal with the type of people we saw them recruiting in A Class Act for Station One – a model, a race car driver… surely there must be some kind of training for people outside of the ordinary recruit pool?

All of that said, I really do enjoy Lee taking such obvious enjoyment in Amanda’s successes. I’m sure it was almost worth that cancelled lunch.

    1. Well put, clagjanet. I can imagine the type of questions Amanda might ask during training sessions would be very different than the other freshmen candidates. I’m sure others would see her as showing off, and possibly Beaman might think that as well, especially if he’s personally not a big fan of Lee’s and/or thinks Amanda is just one of Scarecrow’s flings.

      Liked by 1 person

  10. Boy, doesn’t Lee like it when Amanda is proven correct? “The cat that ate the canary” came to mind at the look on his face! He loves working with Amanda, he loves Amanda, and he loves going out to back up Amanda. It’s all good in Lee’s world right now. Love the sweet, pleased look on Billy’s fact too.

I wonder why Beaman is so upset? Perhaps he, like Francine, harbors some resentment about Amanda’s elevated status which appears to be even above some established agents? I think, if I were in the same position as Francine or Beaman, I might harbor some resentment too. And does anyone doubt, regardless of her “gifts,” that her current status isn’t due to the fact that she’s Scarecrow’s partner?

Thank you for the blog; it has brought so many hours of enjoyment. Glad you’re taking some downtime, iwsod. Happy Holidays to everybody!

  11. Beaman: In your case, quite a bit more now then then.

Hmmm… I’m wondering if Beaman has caught onto the Amanda/Lee relationship? Maybe Lee waited for Amanda outside of class on occasion? Or maybe Beaman has a good sense for that sort of thing. Surprisingly, because Beaman seems so uptight here. I love that Lee comes to her defense and rightfully so. She knows what she’s doing.

Yes, I think Lee’s not minding the Class C interrogation turned full-scramble. He still worries about her, but he trusts her and so does Billy.

A break works for me. I’ve been scrambling around, getting ready before the holiday break and I’ll be leaving town for a week and a half (won’t be online at all). December is always so busy.

    1. Yes, I thought the same. Beaman is assuming Amanda’s status at being able to jump the queue and bend the rules was because of her ‘association’ with Lee. I mean, those two haven’t exactly been subtle — even before their brains caught up to their hearts, the body language was pretty obvious there was something going on or about to.

      1. Ditto the same thought I had, but I did enjoy Lee sticking up for Amanda. Loved your ‘Brains caught up to their hearts’ Comment!
