4/9 Season Two, Episode 2: The Times they are a Changin- Scarecrow and Mrs King

Thanks to our local Munich tour guide Claudia for all the information on munich and the locations – fasincating!! So Amanda is off to meet with Lee, Billy and Francine at the Arcaden[Arcaden= Arch Claudia? good to know!!] so here is a pic showing just how many arches are at the Archaden.. There are alot of arches! Plus one extra for this scene: Amanda’s Archenemy- Francine!! Smile tee hee..

Billy! I missed seeing you get bossed around by Lee! Francine!! I errr didn’t miss you! hehehee..but.. then again you do make Amanda look good, so I sort of missed you! Amanda has briefed them all on the meeting with Haddy, and the first dialogue here we hear is Billy:

Billy: If what you’re saying is true, Amanda, then the clock is really ticking! Not only do we have to get Haddy Kemp out of this country, but now we have an assassination to stop and it’s going to be pretty difficult because we don’t know who is going to be assassinated!
Anyone else find this super clever writing?? yes.. the glockenspiel clock really is ticking down to the assassination!! Smile

2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000930330Lee: Listen, Billy, I think the two people that he greeted on the way out were some of the terrorists.
Billy: Well, that’s your department, Scarecrow.
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000933333Francine, I want you to compile a list right away of all the prominent Americans who might be in Munich in forty-eight hours.
Francine: This could change our priorities.
Amanda: Can’t you just stop these terrorists?
Francine: Now why didn’t we think of that?
[Amanda bows her head embarrassed, Billy glares at Francine, and Lee explains for Amanda why that isn’t possible.. and that she wasn’t to know-poor Amanda..]
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000942342
Lee: The trouble is, Amanda, nobody knows who’s in the Riebaden group.
Francine: It’s not a large group, there’s only about thirty members, and they’re spread all over Europe. The only problem is they attack in small groups.
Lee: And they’re totally ruthless.
Amanda: They could kill Mr Kemp and he would never see his little boy again and that would be just awful.
Billy: We will still get Haddy Kemp out of this
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000958358country as planned. Now I’m arranging for a United States Army transport plane to be put on standby alert. That leaves just you, Amanda.
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000967367Amanda: Yes, sir. That makes things quite a bit different, doesn’t it?
Lee smiles trying to reassure Amanda.
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000970370Lee: Hey. Amanda, your part in this is still safe. 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000971371You just deliver the second message and continue to act like a tourist.
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000980380Amanda: Because they would never do anything to hurt a tourist, would they?

2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000983983Lee
: Ha!.. No. No, they wouldn’t.
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000985385Amanda: Right
Amanda bows her head and suddenly starts flipping through her guidebook again.. Billy and Francine join Lee in smiling at Amanda to convince her all is fine.. but Amanda isn’t buying it so easily.. she knows Lee too well now, and his reassurances- with that forced casual, too casual attitude is a giveaway!
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000987354
Lee tips his head to the side, trying to see Amanda’s downturned face.. very cute! Smile
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_000988021
Amanda looks up.. and Lee is unswerving.. sure he will keep Amanda safe so all is fine..

Off Amanda goes to the church to meet Haddy.. Goooorgeous church!! Has anyone been there? Amanda finds a pew.. and doesn’t have to wait long for Haddy..

2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001051451Haddy: Don’t turn around. Someone might be watching.
Amanda: In a church?

2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001056456Haddy
: They blew up four churches last year.
Amanda: Oh, my gosh.
[Poor Amanda! this is kind of scary huh!! ]

Haddy: What’s the Agency’s answer?
Amanda: They’ll take you out tomorrow by Army transport.

Amanda: Do you have any further information about the intended assassination victim?
Haddy: No, no. If they could postpone getting me
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001062462out of here by a couple of days, I might be able to come up with something. I could call it a way of making up for past mistakes.
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001084484Amanda: No, you can’t wait. They might kill you and you have valuable information.
Haddy: Yeah…. I know…. Tell the Agency Emmerams Mueller in Bogenhausen tomorrow ten o’clock.
[Is that ten o’clock like today’s ten o’clock? Winking smile ]
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001113513Amanda: Right. Your son can be very proud of you.

2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001122522You’re a very brave man. . . . Mr Kemp, are you there?

This time Haddy gives Amanda a german sounding meeting place.. and no number on the tourist map!! eek!!
Love how Amanda does it again- another surprise goodbye!!  Poor Amanda!!! She doesn’t know which way is up in this episode with agents not saying hello, reformed terrorists not saying goodbye.. eek! but.. brace yourself Amanda something even more scary is around the corner!!!

2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001127527Thank goodness the priest comes along, takes pity on her and tells her he has gone.. Only.. it is Lee! eeeeek.. Lee as a priest? This episode just gets scarier and scarier!! Why am I suddenly hankering to read The Thorn Birds???!!
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001129529Amanda: thank you fath- [she stops short, realising it is Lee..  Ok ok.. they set up the whole thing so we wouldn’t know and Amanda wouldn’t know and isn’t it funny Ha.Ha.Sad smile but – It doesn’t make any sense for Amanda not to know Lee is there!!! She was concerned about her safety in the scene before!! How could he not tell her!!!!!! It seems almost cruel not to have reassured her Lee would be there Sad smile but I am sure they were just going for the joke.. I just think too much!]
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001133533Amanda whispers
: – You were up there?
Lee: Yes.
Amanda whispers again: You were up there?
Lee: Is it all set?
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001138538Amanda: Yes. Um, tomorrow at Emmerams . . .
Lee: Emmerams Mueller.
Amanda: . . . in Bogenhausen at ten o’clock.
Lee: Good.
Amanda: Yes.
Lee: Billy’s got the plane all arranged.
[He’s such
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001152552a good PA! Smile ] So I guess you can go back to the hotel and have a happy vacation.
Amanda: Will you take it from here?
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001155555Lee: Yes, Amanda,
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001156556

I will take it from here.
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001158558I’m doing what I do.
Amanda: Right.
[why does Amanda react like this?? I don’t think she doubts Lee and that he is good at what he does.. My theory, is that she is worried about the danger, but.. she wants to be there with Lee, and be involved.. she wants to know that Haddy got away safely back to his son.. ]
Ahhh along comes the german blonde…
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001165565
who speaks in german to Father Scarecrow, he responds in german [hey! German speakers!! how is Father Scarecrow’s accent? Smile] and then she wanders off..  uh oh.. Lee even turns to watch her walk away.. grrrrrr…dressed as a priest, the man is no saint.. Love that Amanda doesn’t let this pass without comment!!
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001175008
I loooooove the look on her face as he has a second look ( remind anyone else of the first time?? and her reminding him she has other places to be??!!!)

[I love any reminder of ‘The First Time’ Smile]2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001176576
Amanda
:  What did she say?

2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001178578Lee:She wants me to hear her confession.

2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001180580

Amanda: You wouldn’t!

2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001181581

Lee waits a beat and then responds: No, I wouldn’t.
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001185585

Do you think he considered hearing her confession?

IMHO I don’t think he was really going to listen to her confession..he had a nice look at the blonde, but then, to make light of it Lee goes and cracks a joke..
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001187354

Lee continues playfully: It might be pretty interesting.

Amanda is not one of your buddies Lee, that joke is not going to come across well! Amanda finds it 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001189089reprehensible.. not funny at all.. and from the looks of Lee as she whacks him and walks off – I think he sees the joke was a bad idea.. thoughts anyone??
2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001189489

2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001192592I am not catholic, but I did wonder if this whole joke was a big risk for smk to take –I wondered if this was offensive to catholics.. that Lee was dressed as a priest, up at the altar when he is not suppose to be (isn’t that holy up there?) and then making suggestive looks and comments about a young woman looking to confess? oh and I thought germany was protestant?? so why is this girl asking for the priest to hear confession? protestants don’t do that.. help?? I’m probably mistaken and it’s nothing..

I get the joke they were trying to go with..but also considering how Lee didn’t tell Amanda he would be there when he knew she was afraid for her safety- this doesn’t work for me.( Sorry guys! I am quite possibly alone in feeling this way-but that’s ok.. I don’t expect others to agree with me on all things Smile )
One good thing about this moment is how Amanda doesn’t let him get away with it!! Smile Go Amanda!!! Smile

Amanda leaves the church and Lee behind.. getting out of his getup… or listening to a confession?? Winking smile

2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001209609I think it’s funny when the two baddies are in the car and see Amanda coming out. the flute playing guy (or as Paula says flutey-boy!) says to the Inga, there is something 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001219619wrong with someone who doesn’t love music.. ( this woman wants to kill everyone the slightest chance she gets.. that’s ok.. that she doesn’t like music? is outrageous!)

Inga recognises Amanda as the same woman who had been talking to Haddy at the Bierhaus ( yeah great logic there agents!! having Haddy meet the same person twice! and she is suppose to be a tourist?! ) Soooo she decides to run over Amanda.. and ask Baron von snob later.. 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001244644Amanda only just outruns their car as they try to make her road kill.. phew! good 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001245645on you for not giving up Amanda.. next time can I make a suggestion? go with a faster stunt woman! The way she throws up her hands and then puts them down again as she gets to the door is funny! Almost like she is saying to the car- don’t shoot me! The camera work here is so funny!

2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001256656A red ferrari stops and it’s owner gives Amanda a little pat pat to feel better.. only it’s 2.02 TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN.avi_001266666the snob…Oh no! Amanda thinks he has come to her aid- and he is a baddie!! He gives her a ride back to her hotel- he seems to be trying to establish a relationship with her..
How can von snob possibly know Amanda is working with Haddy the daddy at this point? The other two only just 2 seconds ago worked it out!

Well I shall leave it there for now.. looking forward to hearing your thoughts !! Anymore insights from our local tour guide Claudia? Smile Jealous Lee is coming up!!!! Open-mouthed smile Thanks for reading guys! back with more soon..

“Why am I suddenly hankering to read The Thorn Birds???!!”

OMG, Iwsod, I spat out my tea! I;m old enough that Richard Chamberlain in Shogun was my crush before Lee Stetson came along! You really took me back with that one!

I’ve always loved Lee in a long dark coat but this may be the exception…

This made me giggle uncontrollably. 😂😂😂

Iwsod, I had never caught the line of Billy’s – If what you’re saying is true, Amanda, then the clock is really ticking! – but I agree! Great foreshadowing!

You know, one more random thought here at the arches scene. I notice Lee’s tone with Amanda ends that scene much softer than in the previous scenes thus far in the episode. And this was the first scene with all 4 of them together. Francine is rude to Amanda here, not Lee. It kinda hit me – sometimes maybe I might be a little short or snippy to a family member, but when I see someone else act that way to them, I do not like it one bit. Then I become more mindful of my behavior and make adjustments. Perhaps we see this in Lee here, as he views Francine belittle Amanda a bit with the “Now why didn’t we think of that?” comment and realize that isn’t an admirable environment to create with Amanda. I also wonder how he felt to hear Amanda say, They could kill Mr Kemp and he would never see his little boy again and that would be just awful. I wonder what emotions had gotten stirred up in Lee at that point. Just thinking out loud…well, on a screen here…😉

Good point, Amandarambler! Lee couldn’t help but feel empathy with the prospect of Hadfield Kemp’s son being orphaned. I find Amanda’s phrasing quite awkward here (“never see his little boy again”) AGAIN? Haddy told Amanda he didn’t know he had a son, which leads me to believe he hadn’t yet seen his son!

    When will Lee ever learn?
A: Will you take it from here?
L: Yes, Amanda, I will take it from here … LOL

Matchy-matchy alert: Amanda wore a lavender scarf and who wore a lavender shirt? Why it’s her rescuer, Baron von Lint (too funny, Jenbo!).

  4. I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought of the Thorn Birds with Lee dressed as a priest. And I think it was better if he didn’t tell Amanda he would be there. She wouldn’t be able to help herself but to look for him & would be aware of him. I certainly would be able to keep my eyes off of him!

And I agree, Lee is not in love with her yet. He has affection for her, and is beginning to really like her in spite of himself, but no love.

    1. lol.. you’ve almost convinced me it was kind of Lee not to tell her she was there 🙂 but.. not quite! lol..

It’s fun to try and figure it all out in seasons 1 and 2.. and the first half of season 3..

        1. Too funny Xiola, when I read your comment my brain automatically corrected:
‘I certainly would be able to keep my eyes off of him!’
          to:
‘I certainly wouldn’t be able to keep my eyes off of him!’

seriously! Lol.. me thinks I need to slowly back away from the computer 😉
          nah…. I’m having too much fun! 🙂

typos here don’t matter – readers who love Lee, Amanda and SMK just autocorrect! 🙂

          1. Yup, I also read wouldn’t instead of would. I think we all know none of us could resist Lee Stetson and no one from us could get her eyes off of him so our brains (at least mine) corrects that kind of misspellings automatically. ‘The brain reads what it wants to read’ doesn’t it? 😉

            1. Waaahahahahaaa!!!! It’s a test to see who really is obsessed with smk 🙂

Oh indeed.. that it could say someone could keep their eyes off Lee just doesn’t compute 🙂

Ahhh Xiola.. look what you started!!!

I kinda like Priestly Lee, it’s a whole new look 😀
I accept that impersonating a priest isn’t a joke for everyone but I find it funny. More so when he distinctly displays non priest-like behaviour checking out the woman for confession and Amanda an her slap of chastisement.
Stunt Amanda waving her hands up had me chuckling too, pump your arms you might run faster 😉
Like the Ferrari Baron Von Lint, very smart 🙂

  7. Oh, Cindy, when I checked, I read the hat has 4 corners in Germany only. How many corners this one has, I can not really decide, but it looks very wrong. I also read that hat are nowadays mostly worn outside, meaning mostly at funerals.

By the way, I think because of the tax laws Germany is one of the main income sources for the Catholic church.

I honestly do not know how churches in UK manage at all.

On the other hand this automatic payment makes the churches in Germany some sort of a service provider. I know in UK, if you want to get married or have your child christianized, they want you to see you in service regularily for quite some time (half a year) and you have to pay for different things. In Germany no priest will ask this but that means, they often perform services for people they do not know at all and quite often you can see, that they are in a bad mood because of this. I know of some Germans who where flatly refused by english priests, but I see that the UK way makes a lot more sense.

The whole concept of priest is weird in a way, to study ancient languages for years to then be thrown in a job close to something like a social worker. When I lived in US the priest had a regular job on the side, which made him seem much less etheral.

Anyway, Lee a priest, no way 😉

  8. I would have said, there are as many protestants as catholics in Germany, I just looked it up 30% each is the current number. The number of protestants is dropping faster than the number of catholics. In Germany if you are a protestant or a catholic the state automatically takes away an extra 8-9% of the amount of taxes you have to pay from your salary and transfers it to the church and a lot of people are not willing to do this any more, but the catholics seem to be more fearful of possible consequences than the protestants. So the dropping out rate for protestants is higher.

Lee with this hat is not dressed in a way that cries catholic priest to me. I actually was very confused to see him dressed in a what I thought to look orthodox. So I thought they let him play a catholic priest in an not right costume which takes away a lot of the offense. But I am neither from Bavaria nor catholic myself, so I might be mistaken. I tried to look it up, and it seems that what he wears has become quite uncommon for priest in the last decades. But of course we are talking about something that is decades old…

    1. Fascinating about the taxes! Here (Alberta, Canada), there is not an automatic tax transfer to the Church, but we have two publicly funded school systems and and the education portion of your property tax will go to the board you indicate. The boards used to be Catholic and Protestant, but now they are Catholic and Public as the demographic of our population has changed.
Supposedly, if you are Catholic, you have to attend the Catholic school system, but both boards are pretty loose who they’ll accept because the funding grant follows the student. If your child is special needs, it’s a different kettle of fish but that is a whole other story … 🙂

I think Lee’s head covering is a biretta, but I have not seen it in person before. From Wikipedia “The liturgical biretta has three peaks, with the ‘peak-less’ corner worn on the left side of the head. According to the 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia, “It was formerly the rule that a priest should always wear it in giving absolution in confession, and it is probable that the ancient usage which requires an English judge assume the “black cap” in pronouncing sentence of death is of identical origin.” According to this description, Lee is wearing it incorrrectly.

      1. Hi Paula! you are spot on.. it is not malicious at all.. 🙂 we shall put it behind us.. there’s lots of good stuff coming in this ep!!! 🙂

Paula, Claudia and Julia, thanks so much for taking the time to educate me about the religious situation in Germany! I have a lot to learn about such things!

I had no idea governments taxed their citizens if they identified themselves as a certain religion!! I am not surprised numbers are dropping if there is this obligation that goes along with it.. wow! Eye opening..

Julia thanks for the research into catholic priest information! I though orthodox too.. though with a shorter hat! I was very confused 😉

Claudia this St Emmeramsmuehle – how far out of munich is it? when we get to the big action finale please let me know if this is where it is filmed..because the location is gorgeous and I want to go there!!!

Oh that’s good father scarecrow’s accent was good 🙂 I wonder if BB has learned any german.. is boxleitner a german family name? LOL yes Claudia – ‘Not ha ha’ is spot on!!! and I agree with Amanda on that one..

You know this whole joke of Lee’s and the checking out of the blonde- all in front of Amanda – confirms to me that Lee is not in love with Amanda at this point! I certainly can’t imagine Lee behaving in such a way in season 3.. When Lee dated Leslie, he wanted Amanda well and truly away from all that didn’t he? He certainly didn’t check out women in front of Amanda anymore.. or have I forgotten something? Hmm I’ll have to try and post on the discussion thread about this before I go away.. you guys might want to discuss the love story while I am away..

Inga is an awesome baddie! so over the top! I swear they had the actress channelling evil bond woman in this episode.

Claudia your comment about the sports car showing up? I had the same thought! what is it with men in sports cars rescuing Amanda?? this was why I paid special attention to what type of sports car it was he had.. and I have a few more thoughts on that whole idea – tying in with the next scene with Lee and Amanda which I am hoping to get to asap!

I am about to go away for two weeks :(.. and would love to have this episode wrapped up before I go.. I’ll be sure to put up a notice so people know I won’t be updating much ( I can check in but new posts are not likely) – and that I haven’t disappeared and will be back! 🙂

Hi Cindy! I didn’t know you were from Canada! awesome!! 🙂 I love Canada! haven’t been to alberta yet though 😦 A biretta? that sounds like a sports car!! or a gun! Why am I not surprised Lee is not wearing it correctly? I think they should have gone the whole hog and just had Lee dress as a nun.. and ruin all my Lee fantasies.. ( I guess Rostov wearing a habit was not super great for catholics either.. but somehow I thought the posing as a priest in a church, approaching the altar, and being in the position of being able to hear a genuine confession if he wanted to, was really off! ) but! It was just a 1980s joke.. and times were different back then.. some of the stuff that is said to women in smk would not be acceptable today I think.. but that is a whole other tangent for another day.

Great to hear from you all!! Byee!

        1. I never thought about Lee (as a priest) checking out the blonde girl. I always thought he was looking after her to make sure she is out of earshot so he could continue talking safly to Amanda.

“Boxleitner” is a bavarian or/and an austrian family name. I think I once (back in the 80’s…) read something about Bruce’s grandmother (the Boxleitner-grandmother) was austrian and he learnd some german when he was a child. I might be wrong about it… But his accent is really brilliant

  9. Hey, some more from the local tour guide:
Weather, its raining an that on holidays! Oh I wish it would be like in the ep.

Munich the capital from Bayern is catholic. So it’s o.k.
The curch we see from the outside is the Frauenkirche near Marienplatz. From the inside it’s the gorgeous Sankt Georg curch in Munich/Bogenhausen.

The meeting place Haddy gives Amanda is the St. Emmeramsmuehle (muehle – mill) near the Isar-river.

The first time I watch the curch scene on youtube, I was rofl! The expression’s on each faces are priceless!
Father Scarecrow’s accent is brilliant, he look’s very concentrated not to grin.
Blonde says “Excuse me father, do you have time for my confession?I have so much to tell you” and Lee “One moment please, my child.”
Amanda whacks Lee with the book is too funny! The look he gave her is like
“Whooo, to much?” Amanda knew he is teasing her but even in that robe with such a line, “not haha” she thinks.

I wouldn’t pass Inga at night, that could be dangerous, whaaaaa!

The first thing on my mind when Mr. Ferrari stops: Mr. Protective,  jumping out off a fancy car, coming to rescue! A german Lee copie? Ohhh, nooo please don’t let it be happen, I must close my eyes.
    So good night and bye!

  10. Yeah, I always cringe at the Lee-as-priest scene. It is a bit painful for a devout Catholic to watch, and I like the character so well. I chalk it up to plain ignorance, not malice. Germany may be predominantly protestant, but there are certainly a good number of Catholics and Catholic churches there. One side of my family hails from Germany, a bunch of Catholic farmers with very large families.
