Yippeeeeee we are back in Europe this week!
I LOVE this episode.. for it’s locations as much as for it’s story…!! Don’ t you just love the aerial shots as the episode opens?! sooo beautiful! The last time I wrote about this episode I hadn’t been there – but! Now I have!! Squee!! Who else has visited Salzburg?
We see a lady ( we later learn it’s Emily) at a street cafe checking out the Salzburg guide book and sketching..
She seems to have made a friend of a waitress Marianna, who warns her in a rather childlike way
not to visit the castle she is planning on going to as it’s eeeevil.. a very pretty girl.. but the girl can’t act.. Maybe it’s just because I had to give a right -hook to a pick pocket in Paris once, but for a spy,
Emily isn’t being very careful about keeping her bag safe! and with her little spy camera and things in there- you would think she would be more careful! Sitting there on the chair next to passers by.. In a perfect spot for a mugger to take it!!
Speaking of people walking by.. watch this scene only watching the passers by… we see the same people over and over.. yep.. This is Emily’s version of the Truman show!!! You’d think with her heightened obeservation skills as a spy, she would have realised she is actually in the middle of a reality tv show.. ahhhhh… no, just cost cutting on extras! They all go by two or three times in different combinations! LOL!!!
Off Emily goes to the evil castle regardless of Marianna’s warnings.. her outfit and hat remind of Maria in the sound of music.. (I wonder if that is deliberate given this is set in Salzburg?) –when she’s in her ‘the poor didn’t want these’ clothes at the beginning of the sound of music (TSOM)!!!
Actually, Maria even stands in front of the same fountain that we see Emily in front of in this pic- in that very outfit!!
Next thing we see Emily taking photos of a castle with a camera which looks very untouristy, and very spyish! Combined with that ‘I’m doing something cunning’ look on her face 😆 – I’d say she is working for the agency.. and about to get herself in trouble!
Yep.. big smelly guy grabs her.. ( he looks like he would smell! ohhh the indignity of it all!) -On to Amanda and Lee!
I think this is suppose to be funny.. but.. for me it isn’t..
Amanda arrives in a taxi whooo her ‘first castle ‘!!! Lee whisks her out and tries to hurry her along.. Lee tells Amanda he asked the taxi driver to take her things to her hotel – and gives Amanda a pat on the back! awh!! they’re pretty comfortable with each other! huh!
Amanda isn’t having it.. yep, got to stop for a scene in front of the gorgeous Mirabel gardens – The do- re- me garden! wow. I’ve been there now!! Last time I watched this I hadn’t.. wow!!! I’m so lucky!!
Love how Amanda says this is like a fantasy land!
and Lee responds: sometimes I feel like I’m living in one. ( Love how Lee says this with a smile, I think deep down he Appreciates Amanda’s excitement!)
Love that Amanda slows Lee down and makes him look around himself.. Mr task oriented is missing out on some gorgeous views! I should stop and enjoy the view too.. My goodness.. would you look at that view! Lee’s got his lovely haircut.. a nice grey suit.. hair not too styled.. healthy tan.. Yes the view is lovely!
Oh hurrah Amanda works for IFF now.. finally! all that other plant, dog walking stuff was getting too ridiculous! Love how Mr Melrose told her what to tell her family!
Sweet Billy!!!
Lee: Right! So everything’s fine.
Amanda: well no not exactly. I told her that I was going on a location scout for a documentary.
Lee: what’s wrong with that? It’s a perfect cover story.
Amanda: It’s not the truth Lee! And I don’t want to lie to my mother anymore. ( then don’t be a spy Amanda.. I kinda wanted to tell her to get a grip here.. ) but Lee takes Amanda by the arm, shows her the locations and makes her feel all better! Lee is much more sensitive than I am! (that’s scary!) ;)hehehee.
Lee: Ok Amanda, look. You see that little church over there? That’s a great location isn’t it? huh?
…and the statue right here in the square! Isn’t it terrific? Amanda smiles as she realises what Lee is up to.. Go Lee! He is being very good with her!
Amanda: Yes
Lee: so there! You’ve scouted locations ok?!
Amanda: why did you send for me?
Lee: I didn’t. Emily Farnsworth did.
Ahh yes.. Lee is happy to see Amanda because he thinks she can help!
Amanda: Mrs Farnsworth? Ohhhh you don’t mean that nice English woman I showed around Washington last year?
Lee explains: Two days ago I got a coded message from her to meet her here in Salzburg.
Amanda: excuse me but did you say coded message?
Lee: Emily’s a British agent. One of the best field operatives MI6 has got. [of course she is!! ]
Amanda: Mrs Farnsworth is a spy?!
Lee: Mm hm
… Amanda is shocked to learn this nice old lady is a spook! Aaaand showing her around Washington, she didn’t have a need to know – Hmm it certainly reduces the credibility of Lee believing Amanda isn’t spy material – after all he knows Emily is a top MI6 agent.. so why can’t Amanda be one day?
Lee suggests they find somewhere a little less crowded to talk about what’s going on.. [i.e.time to show a new Salzburg location ]
I shall finish up there for now so I can get this published.. there will be more to come as soon as I can.. Any other huge Sound of Music fans? There will be a few The Sound of Music references throughout! Just another reason to LOVE this episode!!
Any thoughts, feedback, insights, gripes, requests, questions???!!! Feel free to comment away!!
Thanks so much for reading!
Some time ago, I watched a documentary on Salzburg (And no, I don’t think IFF made it grins). I won’t elaborate on the artwork that has sprung up there since Amanda and Lee were there. But when they showed the entrance to Mirabell Gardens, I could almost see our two favorite agents stand right there! Gave me a silly smile all afternoon!
SA, smiling silly again thinking about it!

Every time Amanda says she doesn’t want to lie anymore I always think the same, well why the heck not?!?! It affords you to be so much more inventive and creative and just plain fun! Dotty seems to love excitement. You embrace it too girl! I am a veeeeery bad influence obviously………. I’ll just crawl back down the rabbit hole with my marshmallows and chocolate and try to be good like Amanda is.
(But being a bit bad is so much more fun! Just saying…..)
(Not trying very hard here, am I……? hee hee 🙂 )

I visited Salzburg about a year after this was filmed. Mostly what I remember is a beastly long walk up to the Hohensaltzburg Fortress. It is a pretty city, though.
Lee seems genuinely glad to see Amanda this time, and very touchy-feely. He may say she’s only there because Emily requested it … but I think he’s realized he enjoys her company. He gets a kick out of her – and Mr. Serious Lee hasn’t had a lot to laugh about in his life prior to Amanda.
Jean Stapleton is one of those actors so closely identified with a role that it’s difficult to see her as anyone else. Edith Bunker as a super spy? Does not compute.

Poor Mrs Farnsworth, that’s a rather unceremonious way of being carted off! Surely a gun in her back would have sufficed rather than being manhandled 😦
Love Amanda’s enthusiasm. She sure has those moments when she wrings as much joy from what she’s doing.
I can’t comment on whether Lee speaks good German but I do like him saying it 😉 Hes very cute indulging Amanda and her “lies” issues. I am a bit like you IWSOD she chooses this job either tell your mother the truth or shut up complaining and lie to her!
I’ve never been to Salzburg but it looks a beautiful city 😀

Hi Jenbo – We’re on the same wavelength today. I just started watching this episode this morning! I have no idea if Lee’s German is gut either, but I just love the sound of his voice in any language – would love to hear the Urdu he says can speak in TGTN though 😉

Now if he could speak fluent French like Bradley Cooper I think I would be in heaven, with both of them 😉

Well, an episode where Lee and Amanda speak some German. I like the taxi scene. Taxi driver: Ich spreche net Englisch Fräulein (I do not speak England Miss), where Miss to a woman of any age but surely of Amanda’s would be considered an insult nowadays.
Amanda trying to say Schloss (castle) cracks me up. Very funnily pronounced. Lee is more fluent but still a strong accent.
Lee: Guten Tag Frau King (Good day Mrs. King).
Lee: Bringen Sie die Koffer ins Hotel (Take the suitcases to the hotel). I always wonder who will pay the driver.
Amanda getting out of the car trying to say Guten Tag too and then to the taxi driver Guten bye, so funny, for goodbye. Only good translated and bye not at all 🙂 German would be Auf Wiedersehen.
And in the abduction scene it strikes me how the gunholster on the baddie can look so unattractive while with other persons in the series…

Oh, I love this episode. I’ve been to Salzburg twice, first in 2010 and then again this past spring, and in between these two trips, I discovered SMK! The first time we watched “Geisterschloss” in 2011 (on my birthday!) we spent the whole time shouting, “Look, that’s… We’ve been there! Look, they’re in…” Unknowingly, we had walked in Lee and Amanda’s footsteps through that entire first trip. I suspect this has to do with the Geisterschloss/Sound of Music connections, but it was amazingly fun to see these locations in SMK, and this is still one of my favorite episodes. SWOD, I hadn’t noticed the resemblance between Emily’s clothes and Maria’s; the hats are especially similar. I think that Lee appreciates Amanda’s enthusiasm, too. This is one of the few times, Cindy, when I don’t squeeze an SMK line for all of its possible romantic implications until it squeaks. For me, this “fantasy land” line of Lee’s means that he can’t believe how strange and unpredictable his life has become since Amanda entered it. I love the way he humors her with the talk about scouting locations as well as that moment right after the locations conversation when they’re just rocking a little and smiling at each other. (It’s shown in the photo that’s right above the typed line, “Why did you send for me?”)
SWOD, I talked with and heard a number of Australians in Salzburg. Is it a favorite destination of Australians? You weren’t there in late May, were you?

Ha!!! don’t worry about it EdGold! 😉 tee heee.. I love to hear from you – whatever you’d like to call me! 🙂
I visited Salzburg the year before last in October.
Yeah I’d say Salzburg is a big Aussie favourite – thanks to the Sound of Music.. I was only there for 4 hours. tragic I know.. bus tour.. but I am determined to go back and spend as much time as I like finding all the smk locations! 🙂
I loved all the signs in Austria saying there are no kangaroos in Austria – apparently some get Austria and Australia mixed up.. too funny! But it should make Austrians feel better to know that our weather forecasters in Australia like to give us the weather for the alps – only.. by ‘alps’ they mean the very tiny mountain range down the east coast of Australia.. ( tiny in comparison) it drives me nuts!! We don’t have any alps!! I keep grouching at the TV.. and our Mountains are nothing like the real Alps which are just magnificient!! So any Austrians – don’t worry – Australians get it too!! 🙂

Yeah, this was a definite melty WTH? moment (not that I am complaining!). The other one that made me go Wha? was when Lee left the panda for Amanda in ACM kid.
