2/13 Season Three, Episode 02: We’re Off to See the Wizard- Scarecrow and Mrs King (Morley’s order: Episode 04)

Moving on to the conference room..
Lee’s having a nightmare Sad smile
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000285051Billy: We don’t have much else to go except that the common denominator seems to be Lee Stetson,…

3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000287053[the shot cuts to the women who are all in the conference room.. with Lee standing to the side looking down at the ground… oh boy! Awk-Ward!!!!!]
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000289055…but we don’t know why…
[cue the creepy chimes again! ]
…Now most of you have worked with him or dated him…
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000292926[Ohhh phew.. they haven’t all dated him! I was worried cos that lady in the foreground here? she was a waitress working for Party Planners in Life of the party.. and an officer at the officer’s club in A Relative Situation Winking smile oh wait.. but she works with Lee? she’s a plant!!! it’s her!!! she’s in on it!!! sorry all this ick factor is making me all weird!]

When Billy mentions Lee having dated some of them- Amanda IMHO reacts to this – she’s seen looking around the room stunned (horrified even?!). First she looks to Francine..
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000293193
Does she know Lee and Francine once dated at this point?
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000293593
Is Amanda wondering how many of these women Lee has dated?! Ugh..
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000293993
How many? I wonder if Amanda is wondering…
There’s no glossing over Lee’s womanising ways in this ep for Amanda.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000294260
Though she is seen to get over her shock and determinedly pull herself together here!
…So we want you to report any unusual activity,…
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000296062
…strange phone calls, c
ontacts – tell me or file report with Lee…
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_0003030693.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000304070
…upstairs in the new Q-Room…

[Aha! Well- that’s confirmation that this ep should definitely be after tail of the Dancing weasel!! IMHO that one is clear cut! Smile Actually you know what I think? I think this line ‘upstairs in the new Q room’ was added post production. It sounds different.. does that mean they added in the Q bureau’s existence?? lol I don’t remember what’s ahead in this ep.. we’ll see!
There are some strange things happening in the eps early season 3- like the Marlin that is back on Billy’s wall again but that wasn’t there for Weasel, but was there for Mr Brand? Hmm.. I’m just going to take note of all this and keep it in mind as we continue – any thoughts on this? do let us know! ]
… And please, please be careful. That’s it.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000305071Whooo the creepy chimes transition into quite a sad music theme here as the meeting finishes up..a beautiful score.. oh wait was it this ep? Hang on.. Yep!!!! This is the episode that won an Emmy award for Arthur B. Rubinstein in the category ‘ Outstanding Achievement in Music Composition for a series (Dramatic Underscore)’ Three cheers for ARB- hip hip!! Hooray!!! Congrats!!!! I think it is well deserved- already I’m loving it!!! Do let us know what you think of the music everyone [ ohhhh I miss Karen Rudolph!! I do wish she’s stop by and say hi.. loved all your musical insights Karen Rudolph- missing you!!]

Okay sorry.. I digress.. getting back to the episode! In the next scene, we find Lee walking down a street..
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000315682
he joins Francine and Amanda and he knows they are up to something! He is suspicious but in a ‘awh you guys!’ sweet kinda way me thinks Winking smile
Amanda: Hello.
Francine: Hi.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000316349
Lee: What’s going on?
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000318985Amanda: Well… [Amanda points to Francine indicating she’ll fill Lee in]
Francine: Well, we…we know how hard this must be for you…
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000320186Amanda: Yeah, so we have a plan.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000324991Francine: Right.
Amanda: Go ahead Francine.
Lee: what?
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000326793Francine:
Okay, you know all the women who didn’t make the meeting, you have to contact them right?…
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000329496
Lee doesn’t seem to be comfortable with where this is headed..
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_0003309973.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000331898
He is seen to react, but try and cover it.. then he looks over to Amanda..
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000332198
… So Amanda suggested we just all get on the phone-
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000332799LOL Amanda looks happy here to have a way they can help Lee.. though anxious to reassure Lee. She looks from Francine, and back 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000337003to Lee and takes over explaining she can’t help it! LOL!
Amanda: And we’ll, uh, we’ll call them and if we’re all calling we can get the whole thing done in half an hour…
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_0003394063.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000340006
We cut to Lee.. very sheepish and squirmy Lee!
… and you won’t have to worry anymore.

Lee: Well, a half an hour won’t quite cut it…
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000343009
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000344110
…Billy wants me to contact all my non-agency friends too.

3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000344210[There’s that ‘friends’ again – when really he is referring to former dates. Gosh.. it really does seem to be Lee’s code for ‘dating’ which is terribly complicated when it comes to Amanda.. I don’t think she is one of those ‘friends’ at all!.. then again Lee seems to prefer referring to everyone as a friend these days.. aie! ]
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000347213
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000347514Francine: Ohhhh….
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000347814We see Amanda quickly turn to Francine and give her a look – what do you make of it? I think it’s a be kind to Lee Francine please kinda look…Amanda doesn’t trust Francine not to score points out of this.. can’t say I blame her!
… All right – okay.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_0003493153.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000350817
(Francine is sensitive enough here to try and hide her delight at Lee’s awkward situation. she smothers a smile and tries to stay professional!)
…So that’s fine, here’s what we’ll do. You give us your black book,
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000352619
[The shot cuts to Lee. Ohhhh boy!!!!!]
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000352919…. we’ll divide it up and we’ll just start dialling.
(Lee looks at the ground here.. unable to look up.. Ohh my goodness.. Poor Lee! Of all the times for him to have to admit to the extent of his womanising ways..)
Amanda: Right, sure. (Amanda’s so lovely
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000355121here.. trying to sound upbeat – it’s no big deal, we’ll help you. It’s all about Lee.)
Lee (eyes still looking at the ground):
Lee looks up at Francine.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000356122Amanda: Boooooks?
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000356222(Lee still doesn’t meet Amanda’s eyes yet- he delays it IMHO)
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000356823(I love how she says this.. like it’s a statement rather than a question..and said so sweetly! oh noo it’s boooooooks?)
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000357424Lee: I have four of them.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000358124
Finally, Lee looks at Amanda and finishes this sentence. Ouchy ouchy.. It hurts to look in a mirror right now huh Lee?
Francine (this time, she can’t resist a smile and chuckle at Lee’s err grandiosity) :
I should have known….
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_0003592253.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000361327
…That’s okay….
[We cut here to Lee’s eye talk to Amanda as Francine continues..]
… I’m gonna go clear off my desk and we’ll just jump on it this afternoon, okay?
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000362128What do you see Lee’s eyes saying to Amanda here everyone?
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000362395
Do tell!!!
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000362662I think Lee is saying:  – eek this is so awful!! don’t think too badly of me!!! I know it looks bad- but you know me!!! Lee has made mistakes in the past with collecting 4 black books worth of numbers.. I see regret there in his eyes..and he is pleading with her to understand..
what do you see?
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000362829
Amanda appears surprised at the grandiosity of Lee’s history fleetingly.. the guy is very exposed here.. all his previous sins? shenanigans??  in plain view – and Amanda is gentle with him.. it is all pretty funny how busted he is- but she has the grace to hide it.. haaaaa.. they’re very cute here!
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000363430Amanda can see this is awkward, very awkward, she smiles and looks at the ground..
Lee is so busted.. that she can’t help but have a little snigger -sheesh!!! tee hee!
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000363730Amanda seems to raise her eyebrows like-  ahh gee!!
Well 4 books is an awful lot no?!
Amanda: Alright. See you later Francine.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000364931Lee: Thanks a lot Francine.
Francine: Sure.
(Francine manages to sound like she is trying to stay upbeat here for Lee’s sake too.. good for her! For Francine this is pretty thoughtful her response haa!)
Francine leaves. And Lee starts looking at the ground again now he is alone with Amanda..
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000368234
Amanda: Now look. Just don’t worry because it’s gonna be alright.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000372739
Lee gives Amanda a quiet smile here as they stand next to the hot dog stand..
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000373139
His attention is then drawn to a reflection, 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000375442
Amanda looks where Lee is looking.. and asks..
What is it?
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_0003757423.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000377844We see what’s being reflected.. a woman and a random flower stand that looks to be parked in the middle of the street- rofl!
Lee looks up at what was being reflected..
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000381014
But.. she’s no longer there.. [lol.. this whole disappearing woman thing is irritating! or is it just me?! I mean Amanda could see her reflection too?! come on!! Most irritating of all – when Lee is seen to look up at the reflection and see this:
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000382148
You can see plain as day that the woman’s reflection was still there when he first looks around to see her!(see the pic above)  What are we stupid?!]
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000383016Lee: I…I don’t know. I just saw someone I knew – an old friend.
3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000393159[‘friend’ huh.. man I am finding Lee and his definition of ‘friend’ very confusing!!]
Amanda: Well…
Lee: C’mon Amanda, let me walk you to your car.
[Awh.. He’s freaking out.. thinks he might have just seen a mirage or something.. but he’s still looking after Amanda! Smile I love this gentlemanly side of Lee that really starts to shine in Season 3- he walked Amanda to her car in Weasel also Smile though we know that was so he could talk to her about what she was hiding! Smile ]

The scene ends here… so I’ll stop here for the moment.. sooo much has been going on!!! I can’t wait to hear what you all think of this scene! I love that Francine is there when Lee confesses to just how grandiose his number of ‘friends’ really is!!!
The contrast between the way the women react is great, and while Francine isn’t cruel and compared to her usual standard she’s pretty understanding – it is evident that Amanda is being more thoughtful and caring towards Lee.. and this contrast with sniggering Francine only highlights that further.

You know what I find wonderful about this scene? Lee’s regret.. I think he’s ashamed of 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000362529what he got up to in the past, and he wishes he didn’t have to reveal he has 4 black books. This says a lot about where Lee is at nowadays no? I think early Lee would have thought who cares?! I’m young and single.. I’m cute! Smile A real relationship isn’t for me!

Now? Lee no longer looks on his behaviour in this way- he’s changed. He now believes it was not okay, and it is not something he is proud of. This tells me Lee’s values are starting to change- (maybe he always valued a real relationship but he buried it under bravado and good times with lots of friends- but he now seems to no longer be able to hide) It is at least clear to me from Lee’s reaction here that he doesn’t value having 4 black books full of ‘friends’ – he now regrets it, and is seeing it with new eyes. Maybe Lee is now thinking he has played around too much.. – which begs the question everyone.. what has brought about this change in Lee??
I suspect it’s hearing that so many female agents he dated are now dead – and it may be because of him. Plus, he is publicly exposed by all this – that he’s been one of those players he would always warn Amanda about.. this does make me wonder if Lee deep down thought he was too much of a player for Amanda.. that he didn’t deserve her – but for me.. I feel like this is only now beginning to become an issue for Lee. Up till now I see him as having buried any thinking along those lines. But.. this is just my own view of where I see Lee now.

Whoa.. and what a wake up call for Amanda! 3.02 WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD.avi_000363863First time I saw this, I thought she was showing her acceptance of him.. because she’s in love with him. Now? Nope! I don’t think she is in love with Lee- not romantically.. though there are feelings there sure..
I think Amanda is a bit stunned by just how much Lee has gotten up to in the past. It doesn’t make her question what a wonderful man he is.. or her acceptance of him as a friend.. but.. I think it would make you think once or twice. I think all this would remind Amanda to be careful not to give her heart to Lee Stetson prematurely- for both her sake and for Lee’s. Because he has a long track record of collecting ‘friends’ and you don’t want to be added to the book and lose the genuine friendship that they’ve been able to foster no? The stakes are pretty high right now for Amanda to be taking this kind of a chance.. I don’t see her jumping into anything nowadays!

But.. I’ll hold off there for now and look forward to continuing to explore these ideas! byeee for now!! Whooo this ep is so juicy! Smile

  1. This scene about Lee’s little black books is heartbreaking, in a way. Amanda is finding out waaaay more than she anticipated about Lee. She loves him – as a dear friend, but this revelation about his past is eye-opening. It is necessary for her to find this out, but it is painful, nonetheless.

Lee’s so full of regret and embarrassment here. Not only are women from his past being murdered, he has to share his history with these two women – one of whom treats this task with sarcasm and the other, a woman he’s falling in love with.

So much emotion is exchanged between Lee and Amanda, without saying a word. Their eyes say it all. Part of me wants Amanda to reach out to him and hug him to reassure him that she still cares for him and supports him. The other part of me want Lee to reach out and hug Amanda to say that he’s a changed man and he’s glad she’s there for him. (Either scenario results in a hug because I definitely think they both need one after this scene.)

  2. So who has to call Leslie?! 🤣😬

In all seriousness though, I think this was actually the best possible way for Amanda to have to find out the extent of Lee’s past because the fact that he is hurting always takes precedence for her and puts her own feelings and reactions on the back burner. This way, the revelation and her reactions to it can settle and simmer a little bit on the back burner while she focuses on helping him and by the time she gets back to it, it will seem like old news and not be so shocking for her.

  3. Uh, this scene was always so uncomfortable. Lee, for one seems embarrassed and perhaps a little guilty. Amanda also looks a little embarrassed. I feel bad for both of them especially Amanda. I agree that Amanda hasn’t really given her heart to Lee yet, but she definately has very strong feelings for him, and she’s had to deal with a lot lately. First she seems to let go of the way he acted with Leslie and seems to be open to giving whatever they have a chance, and then she is confronted with just how much of a player Lee has been. She always knew he was, but probably never knew the extent. He’s such a good man in so many ways and has always been her hero, I think to some extent Amanda was probably able to gloss over that Lee was a little bit of cad when it came to women. Though she is gracious about it, and still concerned about him. I am sure Amanda is rethinking getting involved with Lee at this point, and probably questioning her feelings for him a little. I think Amanda fell a little bit in love with Lee in the first season but had long since buried it because she thought it could never be an option. Now that those feelings have started to resurface more, she is no doubt again wondering if it really can be a possibility. No doubt she is not ready to trust Lee with her heart yet.

The only plus sides are because Lee does seem embarrassed and a little guilty that it confirms what I thought in the previous post that Lee is getting away from relationships like this. This isn’t how he wants Amanda to see him so he probably was not in date mode with miss boobies.

There is also the fact that later on when one of the women in his black books is killed, Lee says that he only worked with her a couple of times, and doesn’t seem like they had a romantic connection. Tells me these black books aren’t comprised entirely of women he dated but also of connections he had that didn’t neccessarily work for the agency. Also I am guessing a woman made it into the black book just by dating him once or twice, doesn’t mean he was neccessarily intimate with all of them. This day in age when someone says they are dating someone it automatically means they are sleeping together. In the 80’s it didn’t automatically mean that. Amanda used the word date in reference to lots of men I am sure she didn’t sleep with.

  4. I wonder if Amanda is sitting there in that room wondering if she is being grouped with the women who have dated Lee. This is such a great episode for them and their personal growth. I, too, love the looks they share and how they are able to communicate without speaking. He now really cares what Amanda thinks of him.

  5. Melissa Robertson

This one of my favorite episodes…Lee’s past love life comes to haunt him. IMHO this needed to be addressed before Amanda and he could start a relationship. Amanda knew of Lee’s “kids” that he dated, but IMHO Amanda’s eyes are clearly opened in that meeting to Lee’s just how many that is. Then in the out door scene she never judges him, but accepts his past and let’s him know that she is there to help as a friend. We needed to see Lee’s remorse and embarrassment over having 4 black books before he and Amanda can move forward in a relationship. I just love in this scene all the eye communication that is going on between L & A it speaks more than what is actually being said!!

    • Completely agree with you, Melissa. This is an absolutely necessary step here for Amanda and Lee, but much more so for Amanda. This full disclosure is hard for her to hear in person, but now that she knows, she has all “the data” on Lee. Any future involvement between these two will be done with Amanda’s eyes open and unable to ignore Lee’s past. She is now “fully informed” so to speak. Amanda has always accepted Lee for who he is and not judged him, and she appears to be continuing on this same path here. I think it is easier for her to continue this acceptance because of their current relationship. In my mind they are friends and work partners, but they are not in a romantic relationship, so I think it’s easier for her to move on and stay with Lee rather than walk away crying, getting mad, or some other emotional response.

    • Totally what I was thinking too. Lee has to deal with his past before he can move on. We heard him mention his partner in TFT who took a bullet for him. We know about Eva and he got closure on that relationship. We know about his parents who died when he was young and his strained relationship with his uncle. He has been dealing with these issues (with Amanda’s help) allowing him to move on. What is interesting is that we haven’t seen Amanda’s past yet. We know she is divorced, but don’t know the circumstances yet. We also don’t know anything about her Father.

  6. Oh boy, where are the younger women? Where’s Blue Leader’s “granddaughter”, June? I think she must have been fired. That or we only see one half of the women in the room. And where’s Jill? Certainly she should be in this room, and she’s not – LOL!

Amanda does seem to be horrified that Lee could have dated all these women. Hmmm. I’m not sure what to make of that. Maybe it’s because she now knows most of them and has talked to them on occasion and Lee’s name has never come up in a dating context? Or maybe she doesn’t want to feel like one in a bunch of a LOT of women? Interesting. I don’t think Amanda knows yet that she and Lee have dated at this point, but I don’t remember for sure.

Congrats to ARB, but I must say that for me the music is defininitely a background thing and not something I necessarily “hear”. But it does its job and sets the mood for this episode – dark and weird. Very much in line with the whole idea of “we’re not in Kansas anymore!”

Yes, Lee acting very un-Lee like as he approaches Amanda and Francine on the sidewalk. His face, his walk – it’s different. He’s very much trying to sort through all these murders and the idea that more women he’s dated (or worked with) may be murdered. Poor guy. He looks like he needs a friend.

Iwsod, love how you walk us through the “books” scene. I think I agree with your description of what you see going on here. But what really puzzles me is Francine’s suggestion of Lee to give them his black books. That seems like quite an invasion of privacy. I can’t believe she’d suggest it, nor can I believe that Lee would let them. Lee is a very private person, or so it seems from what we know of him. I guess these “friends” of his in his black books just really aren’t that serious or are not in the running for anything other than “friend” status. So why hang on to them? I mean, really? Who needs FOUR books??? He must be really good with the ladies if he can still call someone from book 1 now. I won’t use the sle… word, but it’s definitely a major ick factor for me. Good think he’s got such beautiful eyes and that enchanting voice of his.

And I agree with the whole disappearing woman thing. Ugh. And where the heck did she go? Down a manhole in the middle of the street? Lee is really acting weird.

Yes, Lee’s regret is wonderful in this scene. He has come a looong way. I guess I would say that Lee’s values are starting to change, but I’m not sure. I need to think it through. His behavior is starting to change, that’s for sure. I think the regret stems from the fact that he’s got a true good friend in Amanda and he cares what she thinks of him. His regret is for his past behavior because he now has to come clean with Amanda and admit what he’s been up to in the past. I think he must have always valued love, marriage, etc for him to feel regret now. I just think in the past when he was a younger, single player with no one to call him on his behavior or give him a reason to care, that he didn’t think about what he was doing – he was Scarecrow! But now, with his new found friendship with Amanda, his growing feelings for her, I think he is starting to feel a bit regretful and we see it. He doesn’t want he to think that badly of him, and with this four black-book revelation, it’s hard to deny anything or admit that she shouldn’t think he’s a heel. This makes me think they’ve spent more time together outside of work with no shop talk – more than their one meal after OTL. I forget who actually put a number on it – it was a few posts ago – but I do think whoever suggested it is definitely right. I still don’t think they’re dates, just that they are now free to talk non-work stuff – and Lee is interested in it – and perhaps its for a quick bit to eat or a drink after a case. Nothing formal, no Lee coming to pick Amanda.

Oh yes, Amanda is quite stunned and very disappointed to hear that Lee has four black books. And I agree, I don’t think she is in love with Lee here. Not at all. I think she loves him as a friend, maybe would love to love him in a romantic capacity, but she is still holding it back because of Leslie, because of Lee’s past which is now being shoved in her face, and because of her family and their needs. I like all of what you say in the last paragraph, iwsod and agree wholeheartedly!

    • Do you think that Francine responds the way she does, asking for Lee to hand over the address books, because she is closed off from the personal cost in a way of this type of lifestyle. She is still living like that as well, in a way. So she is business like, handling it like a case. Amanda, on the other hand, is on the more personal side of things, she always has been.

I think the disappearing woman is supposed to be weird. It just emphasizes how this whole scenario is playing with Lee’s mind and emotional well being. There will be more clarity later. What would Lee have done during this whole thing if he hadn’t had Amanda? Kind of like in BO?

      • Hi Morley, I’m not sure about Francine’s response here, but my initial thought is that she is in pure business mode. I agree that there would some of the “closed off” feeling that you mention, but I think that for me it’s more of a business thing than a personal thing for Francine.

Hmmm, what would Lee have done if he hadn’t had Amanda. That might have been a rhetorical question on your part, but an interesting one to consider. I think Lee would remain in business mode as well and not feel personal regret like I think he does here. I think he would feel professional regret, but not personal.

        • I think you are right. It would be interesting to keep asking that question as we continue looking at this episode

        • I remember saying when we walked through over the limit -and Francine made that remark about the midnight rambler (lee) arriving.. that Francine is very comfortable with Lee the player – this seems to be when Francine is happiest with Lee’s love life.. when he’s err rampant.. why? well I am thinking we don’t know why yet..

So when Francine says I should have known- I think she really means it – she sees Lee as a total player.. and probably would have guessed he had four. she knows this aspect of him very well ahem

What would Lee have done without Amanda? gosh.. yeah a great question.. would Lee have regretted his past? Or would his heart have truly become solidly frozen for good? Hmm.. well so glad he did have Amanda and that we get to enjoy their fabulous story! 🙂

          • I agree, I think Francine likes to think of Lee as an irresponsible player. Didn’t we learn that they played backgammon together at one point (that was ROTP right?) Maybe when she thinks of Lee that way she doesn’t feel rejected as much, maybe she knows where their little dalliance fits in his life and so it is ok…?

    • Isn’t a black book sort of like a badge of honor for guys? I remember my brother and his friends having contests when they would go to the mall to see how many phone numbers they could get. And isn’t it sort of a ritual that when you finally decide to settle down you either pass it off to someone else or you burn it? Scarecrow has been busy no doubt and has had a reputation to go along with it. Having four books would just up the ante with other guys or players, wouldn’t it?

At this point the cat is already out of the bag about the books and everything else. And I think that because of where Lee is regarding Amanda, it just shows that he is ready to come clean and lay everything out there for her to see. He knows that in order for them both to ever be able to move forward he is going to have to let her see the good and the bad. This situation with women losing their lives is not one where he can afford to be hesitant or hold back info any longer. You can see how he is bracing himself to say “books” and you can see all that pleading in that eye conversation. This is big for Lee in how Amanda reacts to all of this.

Of course we don’t really know how often he uses them, if the order is chronological in any way, if they are categorized or again if it’s just a collection. Maybe we can assume that his willingness to let Francine and particularly Amanda see them is a way to say that he has moved on from using them.

      • I think you are right about black books among men, even though I think it is kind of crass. Not sure if Lee really was ready to have them out on the table, but there they are. Also not sure if Lee has really thought through moving forward with Amanda. I think he may have thought about it in some regard, maybe even more so than Amanda because he is trying to figure out the whole Leslie?Amanda thing. Now he has this added element thrust onto him. Maybe it pushes the issue for him a bit? Maybe he needs thatt push a bit? I do think he is nervous about Amanda’s reaction and noticing how she responds.

      • This I agree with. The regret in Lee’s eyes however, suggests that most of them probably weren’t merely platonic and he doesn’t argue that they are only “friends”.

In defense of Lee, no matter how mortifying it might be for him to admit he has four black books, in his line of work it’s important to build contacts. One might never know how important a contact could be in a certain situation. Even if most of these women aren’t members of Lee’s “family”, they might come in useful someday. Maybe it’s gotten to be a habit.

        • Lovin this discussion!!

Just wanted to mention I’ve touched on some of these same thoughts in upcoming posts – so apologies if it seems repetitive.. and just keep in mind that I’d already written them when you may have said the same thing 🙂 I’ve written thoughts on the contents of Lee’s black books in future posts so I’ll refrain from sharing my thoughts till then –
          I am loving this episode!!!!

final thought from me – I think Lee would have collected the numbers in the black books for years. Without really stopping to look at the big picture. This situation IMHO has made Lee stop and look at his behaviour in totality – and surprisingly he has found it a bit shameful.. and when he sees it and has to come clean with others? A huge wake up call.. or yes – a big look in the mirror for Lee.

Networking? I don’t think they are that kind of numbers, and.. well I’ll hold off saying more till the next scene referring to the contents of the black books!

      • I think Lee’s willingness is at this point down to the urgency of the situation.. someone is killing women that Lee has a history with.. worked and/or dated… So if Lee had hesitated to share the numbers I would have thought that was appalling of his character! Really glad he puts the needs of the women who have been in his life before his own needs.. go Lee..
Lee may have been a player.. but I don’t think he has ever been a misogynist.. Hmm I’ve said more on that coming up soon! eek!! 🙂

      • Hadn’t heard that about the black books before…sounds a little disturbing to me! I have two brothers, but one is much older and the other much younger, so I wasn’t privvy to any of their black book conversations if they had them.

        • Of course, when my brother was scamming phone numbers he was in high school and fairly immature. And I should have said for some guys, probably the immature or emotionally immature ones, or the players.

          • LOL – had to laugh, Valerie, when I read your comment. I probably have very low expectations of the opposite sex – aren’t practically all of them immature?? Oh dear…I think I’m just quite biased about boys right now…my almost 9 year old son is constantly acting goofy and talking about “pee pee” and “poop” and is full in the potty/fart phase. I think that’s why I’m thinking all boys/guys/men are immature!! Comparing a 9 year old to a high schooler or Lee isn’t quite fair, but other than my husband, that’s the age of the only other “man” in my life right now 🙂

    • Never mind Amanda in love with Lee – to me this screams Lee’s in love (or at least heavy in “like”) with Amanda.

Why? Simple…Lee is all apologetic here with Amanda…not with Francine. Embarrassed? Oh yeah, definitely, and uncomfortable, too. But, he only seems to feel the need to apologize to Amanda. It’s not the sort of thing that a guy would feel he needs to do with a friend, but with a romantic interest, or at least a potential one? Absolutely!

So, my take on the “are they in love with each other yet” question would be an “I don’t know” when it comes to her for him, but I’m willing to bet that he’s officially smitten, though whether he knows it or not is a whole other question!

      • Hi Alyssa! wonderful to hear from you!!!

I’m thinking Lee’s fallen hard too.. do you think Lee knows it??

I am not sure how much he understands what has already happened to him at this point.. or what is happening to him now. but I don’t have a moment in mind where this happens either! I’m just along for the ride.. but yeah.. it struck me reading your comments that: I agree, I can see now that Lee is in love.. fully aware of this? ready to act on it? hmmm.. maybe not.. yet..
It’s not clear to me yet how much Lee is aware of.. I’m looking forward to figuring this all out with you all as the story unfolds!
Ready for the next post? 🙂
I’m going to publish it now before I sign off for the night.. as I’m going to be busy travelling tomorrow am.. Hmm maybe I’ll have lots of wonderful replies from you guys to read while I’m travelling? 🙂

        • I don’t think he has a grid to be able to figure it out yet, but a grid is being created for him, I think. Lovely to watch him discover it.

          • Hiya Morley.. a grid? can you explain that to me? I’m not familiar with this turn of phrase sorry! 🙂
            enjoy the new post!!

            • I thought about whether or not the word would translate for everybody as I wrote it. It is a framework for inputting info, usually in a chart of graph. So when using it to describe a persons emotions or experiences, it means that he has no framework to place and understand what he is experiencing. He can’t measure it or understand it or compare it to anything else. Does that make more sense?

              • I did a double take at first and wondered if it was a typo, but then I read the rest of the sentence and I did get what you meant. Then again, I’m a grid, chart, and framework kinda gal.

              • Ah! In psychology this is called a ‘Schema’! 🙂

              • I agree with what you said below in your earlier comment about that scene in ALSALS about how Lee wouldn’t shoot a lady but that he would shoot Rita. I think that Lee’s quickly switching from Randi to Amanda in the tag is telling that Lee’s world is not the same as it used to be. In season 1 had that happened, I don’t think he would have invited Amanda to stay for cake.

For me the episode where something sinks in and changes his heart, resulting in eventual outward behavior changes is in OOADP. After he saves her instead of Karen, that hug, look, and his body language tell me that at that moment he is starting to understand just how truly special Amanda is, how truly special women like her are, and that maybe he will seek out women who are more like Amanda and less like Randi in the future.

In his look here, I see friendship love, but I also see Lee pleading with Amanda to not lose all respect for him. It’s well established between these two that Lee has always been a player. It’s not been a secret. The extent of his playing is fully revealed here, and that is a blow to Amanda – think it was kiwismh who intimated that in a comment – to have real confirmation of something she knew but maybe didn’t know just how bad until now. After OOADP, Amanda’s continued professional growth, her actions in Burnout, and Lee’s increasing respect for her, I think it’s very important to Lee that Amanda not start to think badly about Lee. He values her, her opinion, and as his work partner (who has just recently been accepted by Lee in her role of partner) I think he feels like he owes her more than a brush off of his past behavior.

                • I like his, BJo. There is so much in that look of his here. There are so many layers to their relationship and they have only just begun to recognize the depths of it. How you described it added to the way everyone else has described hat eye speak just shows how many layers there rally are. They are all there in that silent conversation.

      • Oh yes, I agree Aylssa, Lee is completely smitten. And isn’t he even more lovely than ever by showing so much feeling with all his eye talk! swoon thud

    • This is really a tough time for Lee. I agree that he has come to be a but ashamed of his four books, and totally didn’t want Amanda finding out about them in this way. Yet he trusts her not to think too badly of him. His eyes do seem to be saying, “That superficial person isn’t who I am now”. Which is a lot of growth for his character. He used to brag about his women — in SBTB, basically tells Billy that his 4 black books isn’t enough, that he needs to go meet some MORE women. Then, in OMIT, he has no problem telling Amanda about his weekend plans. By ALSALS, however, he’s a little ashamed to have her know about his superficial relationships, and by OTL he feels even more reluctant to open that area of his life to her scrutiny.

It seems like maybe part if the reason a private person like Lee kept that info written down was the necessity of the job for documenting where he went and who he knows. This is actually borne out by this episode, where suddenly a little contact with Lee Sterson becomes a matter of life or death for these women.

  7. I am glad that Lee handles himself the way he does in the conference room, his head down. There is just enough regret and gravity in his demeanor. I do think all at once the ramifications of his lifestyle is coming full weight on him. And it isn’t just his prolific dating, it is the danger that his life and his association with others can bring. That has got to feel terrible. Not only is knowing him dangerous but he has exposed so many. Man, for a guy with Lee’s demons this has got to have all of them screaming at once.

And Amanda is getting the complete picture, isn’t she. I wonder if any of those “Geranomo’s scalps” comments are running through her head as she looks around that conference room? And that is just the beginning of the extent of this part of Lee. All the other women in the room seem either to be taking this in as if it is only Agency business or else they are reflecting on how burned they already were by Lee. Maybe they are all just bad actors (but I try not to see things that way). They have no response. Francine does a bit with that side ways glance a Lee, but she is already privy to this news. It is Amanda alone who takes it in and it looks to me is watching how Lee is reacting. She has her own reaction as well, but in typical Amanda fashion she seems to be gauging Lee here.

This next scene on the street is such a gem. I love that picture of Amanda after she says “books”, it is a very beautiful profile of her. I think it is interesting that there could be a beautiful look on her face right after this revelation of the enormity of Lee’s social involvement with women. But I think it shows the nature of her feelings towards Lee. She does love him. And even though I say that I totally agree with what Iwsod wrote about Amanda being very careful with her heart. But Agagpe love, Lee is one lucky man to have a friend like Amanda and especially right now.
Francine and Billy are friends, but Francine’s oho response to those black books is revealing. I like these two different reactions of Amanda’s and Francine’s, it highlights the different qualities of their friendships. Francine is being very kind here (for Francine) but she isn’t seeing very deeply, she sees the surface stuff, the Scarecrow stuff (get it, stuffing, Scarecrow… oh well) and although she is kindish about it she won’t look deeper. But Amanda, even though she is shocked, she digs deeper because she can tell that Lee is shaken and needs support.

That look that Lee gives Amanda is so special. I agree, it is a recognition that his past is not so admirably. I bet the Geranamo comments are coming back to bite him too. He has been one of those guys and for some reason it is not something that he wanted Amanda to know the full extent of. There is shame and regret. And he hopes that it doesn’t ruin Amanda’s ability to have the friendship that they have. He doesn’t care what Francine thinks, she if sarcastically laughing at that moment anyway. It is Amanda’s opinion that matters as he looks in that mirror. She sees the enormity, but she doesn’t go any where.

I wonder if Lee’s offer to walk her to her car is also because of what is happening to all these women?

I also wonder what Lee would have said to Amanda if he hadn’t seen that reflection? Would he have tried to explain himself or put into words what he was trying to say with his eyes?

And I wonder if this “friend” thing is a theme here? Could this moment in Lee’s life be defining what a friend really is to Lee, maybe building on what he learned in BO? And this time the circumstances are not a cover, he isn’t pretending something, this is real and it involves lots of different women.

You ask what brings about this change in Lee. I think it began in earnest during ALSALS. I think he began changing the moment he began to interact with Amanda, but in ALSALS I think he may not have been able to see much difference between his relationships and the ones that were a part of his investigation. His life’s pleasure were on that side of the aisle in a way. The way he speaks to Amanda in the “I wouldn’t shoot a lady, but I would shoot you” scene is so tender, I do believe inside of him there is some sort of shift. He is valuing something authentic a bit more than he used to and the shine has come off of the old way he did things.

I also wanted to make a quick comment about those episode order things. If I remember correctly the production order was the same as he one we are following here, except that they made Weasel last. Not sure why, maybe one of those actors wasn’t available until then. But maybe they had made those set changes, like the marlin, before they filmed Weasel. Who knows. But Weasel has to come before this one.

Ok, now I will read what everyone else said.

  8. For me, this look is a stand-out moment in the series – brilliant acting and as others have said, a pivotal moment in the story. My take on the look: – the word sheepish always comes to mind, but it is a more serious version thereof, regret of his past, “I wish I could get rid of my past and be a better man, the type that you could respect (and deserve??).

    • And I really enjoy the moment of Francine/Amanda co-operation, and the rare glimpse of Francine as a decent human being. And as we walk through season three, I’m coming round to thinking that Lee falls in love before Amanda – he is definitely starting to show some signs of it IMO.

    • I agree about Lee beginning to think he would need to be a better man for Amanda. This may the start of that Lee beginning to have that wish.

  9. Iwsod, i like and agree with all of what you say. I also like many of the posted comments. This is already a pretty tense episode and we’ve only had a few scenes. There is a lot of upheaval and heavy emotions going on at this point. Amanda seems to have been able to quash her inner turmoil and distress about Lee and the Leslie situation and focus on the friendship. It’s one thing to know about something and another to be actually confronted with the situation. Amanda has had to be faced with two successive realities about Lee and the women he has associated with, once in the conference room and then with the books. She has been fully aware of Lee’s dating proclivities and even knew about Margo and met Randi and has even been present when women have hit on him while ignoring or diminishing her presence. But she has always been able to focus on Lee and not Scarecrow, their friendship and not a relationship, and the fact that she cares about him as such and wants to help him. She is such an amazing woman.

Lee is distressed at having Amanda see him in that casanova role now, when he wasn’t before. A lot has changed for him and it shows in his reactions to Amanda’s discomfort. I think that look when four books come to light is an “I’m sorry about this” with a side of “I’m really not like this anymore” and a dash of “Please don’t think poorly of me”. Amanda is very adept at letting him know that she is willing to put aside all of the ramifications of this and move on to helping him get through this current situation. I think that the way Amanda is able to just move on and accept Lee for who he is, is why he feels bad for causing her any distress. He knows what Francine thinks of him and is not so concerned about her reactions.

And speaking of Francine…I have to give her some credit for reigning herself in. She could have made the situation a lot worse, but her concern for Lee won out over a smarmy comment. It just would have been so inappropriate given the circumstances.

I always love the non-verbal eye conversations that Lee and Amanda can have. So much is said and there are so many subtle nuances going on with them. You can see glimpses of where Lee is regarding Amanda, but I think that Amanda is still holding herself back. This is another one of those situations that gives her some pause about Lee.

    • Love what you say here!

    • Double Like. 🙂

    • Very well said Valerie

This is why I like Bruce and Kate’s acting so much. The dialog can be a little lame at times, but they do such a good job of communicating their emotions with eye and body language. It’s probably why we all find Lee’s eyes so attractive; they are very expressive. I don’t have time to have another look at this episode right now, but is Lee’s jaw twitching while Amanda is looking away after the mention of the four black books or is that a little bit of a dimple? One thing his eyes don’t express is irritation.

I tend to agree that Lee is starting to fall down that slippery slope to the L word, if he isn’t already there and just coming a little bit out of his dip in d’nile. Amanda.s still wading in there pretty deep. For all she (and we) know, Lee could still be dating Leslie. I have always believed that Amanda may have been the kind of woman he was always subconsciously looking for but was afraid to take a chance with. There have been glimpses since season 2, but at this point Lee isn’t really the type of guy Amanda would have wanted to fall for, at least for the sake of her children. I agree that for the time being, she is consciously guarding her heart, even if beneath it all she harbors romantic feelings for Lee (think about that steamy dream kiss during DOA). That’s not to say she doesn’t already treasure Lee’s friendship.

      • Hey Cyd!! Great to hear from you!!

I had a quick look at that scene.. and when Amanda looks down at hearing of the 4 black books and Lee eye talks with her? it cuts back to lee in the wideshot – and the mood seems slightly different to the close up.. Lee’s jaw twitching? Yeah.. maybe in the instant it cuts back to Lee in the wideshot? and then his dimple makes an appearance! 🙂

Cyd I loved what you said about Amanda here – I’m right there with you!! Indeed the DOA dream sequence told us Amanda’s unconscious is battling romantic feelings for Lee..

I think hearing of 4 black books would make it a little easier to brush off thinking of a future with Lee.. for now..

And! Loved your thoughts on KJ and BB’s performance here – and throughout the show. You are sooo right – on paper, this dialogue would seem a bit flippant. And have nothing at all to do with Lee showing regret or the beginnings of his realisation that he is not proud of how he has lived his romantic life in the past.. or that it matters what Amanda thinks of it – all of this is down to KJ and BB’s wonderful performances here.. kudos!!

I’d love to know how much of it was directed and how much was KJ and BB ensuring their character’s journeys were well portrayed.. looking at the script..it is completely different!

      • Yes Cyd! I love what you wrote here. I agree with what you said about both Amanda and Lee. I like the thought that Amanda might have been the type of woman the Lee had hoped to be with subconsciously, but as time went on he maybe he felt he had moved further and further away from that possibility do to his lifestyle choices. And here it looks as if it is all revealed and he is left with a bowl of rotten fruit. What does he have to recommend himself to someone like Amanda. I don’t think Lee could articulate this at all right now, but I do think he is getting close to recognizing it as possible truth with in himself. And how bitter sweet, to be able to acknowledge it to himself when right now seems the least likely time to ever be able to actualize it.

  10. Hey guys, long time no see 🙂
Sorry been a bit absent, struggled to keep on top of the Dancing Weasel posts and then kinda went into a SMK funk 😮 unheard of. Still busy and trying to juggle life and blogs but I am trying to keep up with the posts.
Haven’t got time to comment properly but I can’t watch this scene without inwardly cringeing for Lee at the mention of the four books! I do wonder how he actually managed to find the time for all this dating given his heavy workload 😉
Anyway busy family weekend so will try and post properly next week. Laters 🙂

    • Hey Jenbo.. I’m not surprised! Sherlock is a lot of work!! just know you are always welcome here – and no work is required here for you 🙂 other than the effort of drooling over Lee 😉

I’ll look forward to hearing from you when you can make it!

    • Hello!! So glad to see you drop by, Jenbo! Your Sherlock blog is pretty cool! Congrats on getting that up and running!

  11. Love how in the third pic here Amanda looks at Lee as if to support him. She must realise he is hurting when she sees him looking towards the ground.
KC that 4th pic of Francine sitting behind the two platinum blonder than blonde blondes is screaming out for a Meme. 😀
Listening to the sound track through headphones, it does sound like “the new Q room” dialogue was added afterwards or recorded separately.
Yep, Iwsod, I think Amanda is being extra careful with her heart here – she always known Lee had an active social life but she has been aware I think since Burn Out how easy it would be for her to lose her heart to him and how hard that would be to reverse or recover from, so she is especially vigilant about guarding her heart. This must be getting more and more difficult for her as their friendship deepens and especially in situations like this where their special connection is more palpable and where she knows she can really help and support him through this more than anyone else in his life.
Really looking forward to reading everyone else’s take on this scene.

    • Hey kiwismh! Great catch with the blondes!!

Why don’t you have a go doing a meme? not your thing? You are amazingly fast at transcribing! [everyone Kiwismh has done wizard, playing for keeps and utopia now already! wow!!!]

I agree kiwismh, Lee and Amanda’s connection is more palpable for sure! everything seems to be to me.. including Lee’s playboy past – so far there hasn’t been much discussion of the first scene in this post – overshadowed understandably by the wonderful 4 books scene.. but I’m really curious to hear what others made of Amanda. I see her as reacting to Lee’s women.. I see Amanda as being a little shocked by the situation and by what Lee is now in the middle of.

And.. I see Amanda as being surprised by Lee’s prolific dating – but I also see Amanda as being concerned for Lee and caring for him.. and I find it even more meaningful that she manages to deal with her surprise and think of what Lee needs – if she wasn’t surprised and didn’t care – then her caring, thoughtful response would not be as meaningful.

Hey I just had a look at the script for this scene.. and.. it’s not there! the whole scene is not there! I’ve been a tad busy so haven’t looked at the script much so far.. but I noticed there was also an interesting little exchange between Lee and Amanda which I think answers the question of -were Lee and Amanda dating at this point – [think they are if you want to though 🙂 ]

In the script, after the meeting Billy tells Lee to get help contacting people.. Amanda and Francine don’t team up to help..
      The script says:
ANANDA: How can I help? I mean, I don’t know why Mr. Melrose even wanted me at that meeting. You
      and I have never…I mean, we’re not…at least, not…like those other women…

[Lee and Amanda share a look, both awkward and intimate.]

      LEE: Amanda, this isn’t easy.
AHANDA I know how you must feel…(thinking) Actually, I don’t have any idea how you feel. But, I do feel for you…it has to be horrible. (reverses opinion) You’re going to need some help. What can I do?
LEE:Well, there are a lot of women in my address books who we have to contact. Francine’s going to help, too . .
AMANDA: Books? You have address books?
Lee nods, then is suddenly distracted by a young woman, wearing some very modern mi 1itary-type clothing…
      End of script.

So interesting! – the script has Lee and Amanda not dating at this point.. (but heck I think we can think whatever we like about that!) .. and interesting that the scene is so different. The scene we got is so poignant! 🙂

      • Yes, this was definitely an occasion where what was filmed was far superior to what was written.
AMANDA: How can I help? I mean, I don’t know why Mr. Melrose even wanted me at that meeting. You
        and I have never…I mean, we’re not…at least, not…like those other women…

Even though this part didn’t make it into the final filmed version, I don’t think it indicates they aren’t “dating” – depending on your understanding of “dating” of course, but let’s not start that debate again….oi 😉
It does seem to reinforce that they are spending more personal time together but Amanda doesn’t see her personal time with Lee as being the same as Lee’s personal time with other women.

        • Ha haaaa I knew you’d like reopening that one kiwismh 😉

I agree, it’s not gonna change anyone’s mind who sees it differently, but I felt it confirmed my preconceived ideas! 🙂 tee hee..

      • Man, do the script writers even know Lee and Amanda. Ok, I am fine with the first part. But Lee getting distracted by some woman is a short military outfit right after that meeting. So glad we got all that eye speak instead of that.

  12. I am probably in the minority here, but I do see a lot of love in the eye talk. It may be stuffed away in Tupperware, unacknowledged, but the difference between Lee’s interaction with Francine and his difficulty facing Amanda is huge. I think they’re so far on the way down the love road that it’s hard to tease out between “good friends” and “in love, albeit not conciously” for me.

By the way Iwsod, love the way you have the banners at the top rotating. So much loveliness to look at!

    • Minority Leader Kiwismh here. 😉 Yes, I agree with this Jule. This is a fundamentally natural and organic relationship Lee has never had with anyone else. This moment is one of those key points in their “friendship” that illuminates to each of them how special their relationship is. Eventually this must lead each to the realisation and acceptance of love.

      Liked by 1 person

    • Well, I know I tend to be very vocal about the two of them not having fallen in love at this point. But there is a lot of love there. There are deep pools of it for both of them that have been filling for a very long time. I just don’t think that either one of them has taken the plunge into those pools yet.
I see love there too, Jule. But at this stage it is that agape love (mostly 😉 )

    • I knew this day would come some day, LOL! When I first started posting here someone included in their welcome to me that if I ever heard a phrase I didn’t understand, like “tupperware”, to feel free to ask. Well, I’m asking!

      So…translation, please? Thanks!

      • A question for me – the origin of “helmets”? I gather it has to do with not getting concussion from swooning?

      • Glad you asked, Alyssa G.
I think I am the one responsible for the “Tupperware” and I will see if I can explain it. We have been mentioning it for a while now and it feels like it has taken on a life of its own. I believe I was imaging a pantry and using that image to describe what was going on with both Lee and Amanda’s hearts/ emotions. I think I was imagining Amanda’s as nice a neatly stacked, each feeling and emotion for Lee categorizes and lid tightly on, neatly tucked away in her pantry. Lee’s on the other hand would look orderly on first look, but just try to move one neat Tupperware container and the whole lot would come tumbling out and break open.
Anyone else want to add to that basic image?

  13. Whooo! The eye talk is one of my fave moments in the whole series! I’ve always felt like Lee was saying “Sorry” to Amanda here, and she is saying back to him “It’s okay, I understand, I want to support you through this.” That isn’t to say Amanda approves of Lee’s active social life to this point (after all she still doesn’t know for sure at this point that he has stopped dating – and neither do we if we forget about what is ahead) but that she wants to make sure he knows she isn’t going to think less of him because of it.
I don’t think Amanda is shocked by the revelation that there are 4 Black Books – I think she probably always suspected there were more women than your average guy would have had. This is more like that feeling you get when what you think you know is actually confirmed with real evidence.
As for Lee, I don’t think his embarrassment and realisation that his previous ways were not healthy were all realised at this moment. I think he has been feeling for a while now that how he was living was not healthy and we see from the latter part of S2 onwards he has matured and begun to make those changes. This moment is all about the shame and embarrassment of suddenly having a magnifying glass applied to his past, and how he feels about Amanda having a front row seat to all of this. He wouldn’t feel the embarrassment and need to eye talk apologise to any other women (I.e. Francine who is standing right there too with whom he has had a long term friendship and some time liaison in the past) so this is revealing about how different and deep his feelings already are for Amanda, even if he is not ready to admit it.

  14. I’ll have more to say later but I don’t have the time now. What comes to mind first how many times Lee has cautioned Amanda about some of the men she has been attracted to, with comments like “He’s got more scalps on his belt than Geronimo”, when Lee’s the one who should talk. However, that would seem to be changing for him (I don’t want to get ahead of the current episode). I always thought he looked embarrassed and very apologetic about having collected all these phone numbers too. I love how Amanda isn’t judgmental about it. She downplays it and tries to save him embarrassment. She is a true friend here. It might she still doesn’t think she has a chance with him. She doesn’t act in any way jealous like she did with Leslie. She’s going to stay his loyal friend even if that’s all she can have with him and just chalks it up to Lee being Lee.

So what do you think??? :)
