Amanda and gun toting Krusty comb over Krutiov are centre stage, having interrupted the play – Mon Dieu Mon Dieu! Dotty and the boys watch Amanda’s surprising performance!
The tape with the information Tony gathered (stole) from drugged Maria is hidden in the tobacco tin on the bar…
Krutiov continues to wave the gun around and yell he wants the tobacco tin. Hmm isn’t it right there on the bar? why doesn’t he take it? why is he demanding someone give it to him? I can’t see it..
He yells again..
Krutiov: Give me that tobacco tin!…
(Is the gun aimed at Amanda? It may be.. such an awful thought when Dotty and the boys are watching!)
Lee rushes onto the stage as Krutiov yells his demand again. We see Dotty and the boys watching – riveted!
….Give me that tobacco tin. This is a real gun.
[Someone is holding the Tobacco tin?] The music gets louder.. [I guess they are now really going for farce as they up the playful music here..]
Krutiov aims at the barkeep (The future Clarke on bold and the beautiful, and previous IFF agent), and then at Lee as he rushes toward him.
The Barkeep grabs Krutiov’s shooting arm.
[Aha! maybe he is not a ‘former’ IFF agent after all!
This image above is freaky!!! Krutiov is pointing his gun at us!!]
The other cast members watch on stunned..
[The Chanteuse doesn’t look like Faith Ford here? I think?]
Ah!!! the Tobacco box was in the Chanteuse’s hand.. Amanda reaches out and takes it.
Chanteuse: It’s not for you. [whatevs honey!]
Amanda grasps the tobacco tin with two hands and steps back.
Whoa in the wide shot here, Krutiov was aiming the gun at Lee and about to shoot. Lee instead kicks it out of his hand..
Choosing to do this rather than shoot with the gun he is holding in his own hand.
We cut to an audience view where Lee punches Krutiov and sends him flying.
We immediately cut to the boys.. oh rofl!!! This is their dream version of theatre I think! haaaa.. I love the boys here. They save this sequence for me! Funny!!
I think Phillip is hilarious here.. the kid has bloodlust
Phillip: Yeah!
Back on stage, the Chanteuse tries to stay in character. How absurd!
Chanteuse: …Just take the money back.
She turns the picture of Paris the right way up again.
Soldier: But this dance has only just begun.
Barkeep: Mademoiselle doesn’t want to dance.’
Solider starts dancing with Amanda.
eek!
The curtains come down..
Dotty and the boys are thrilled!!
Beyond Thrilled!
Audience: Bravo, bravo, bravo…
The curtain opens again. Looked to me like Lee and Amanda were checking on Krutiov..
but had to come up front for their curtain call..
ROFL we’ve entered a time warp! Love this time travelling audience! The hair and shoulder pads are way too small! the bow ties way too large
As they take their bow,
Amanda slips Lee the cassette.
It seems like Lee holds on to it? or does he put it in his pocket?
Rofl Amanda’s a little distracted and misses the first bow. She hurries to catch up..
Lee looks so relieved..
he’s holding the tape and all is well again.
Lee: Ah, nice performance…
[naughty Lee, he turns to look at Amanda when he says this – eyes straight ahead scarecrow or everyone will know you are talking to Amanda ]
Amanda turns to Lee happy.. [she’s so busted too eyes straight ahead Amanda – Dotty and the boys are watching!]
….a bit improvisational.
[Lee looks like he had fun this theatre stuff is alright!
]
[Just look at how Amanda holds on to Lee’ wrist/hand as he holds on to the tape ]
We cut to a wide shot and can see Amanda giving Phillip, Jamie and Dotty a wave from the stage.
I love how Dotty looks around at the rest of the crowd cheering like – thank you thank you! that’s my daughter!!
[And Phillip thinks she’s a little nuts ]
(Back on stage, the cast take one last bow.)
LOL Amanda is twice the last person to bow she must not have practiced that move at university!
The curtain closes for the last time and the scene ends there.
So what do you think of this action finale all?? As they go, I think this is a good one it’s short..
I think this is Dotty’s first glimpse of Lee isn’t it? Other than a very brief glimpse in the suburbs of her new unmarried neighbour Lee Sampson in Vigilante Mothers? Does she recognise his ‘very strong profile’ and ‘very good posture’?!
[Good posture’s very important!]
And what about the (IMHO) elephant in the room: This was the boy’s second time seeing Lee wasn’t it?
The other time they saw Lee he was punching the daylights out of a man who hurt their dad and tried to kidnap them!
[Haaa fab to remember not Shamba!]
Sooooo I think even from a distance they would remember..
And if they didn’t remember that – maybe they’d remember the way this man was looking at their mother swoony!
There they are! Looking right at Lee Stetson!!!
Hmm.. Jamie put those glasses back on!! and get Phillip some while you are at it!
Lastly, we were shown that bottle made of sugar glass way back.. but in the end it wasn’t used! lol!!! A bit of obvious foreshadowing in smk that was a (pickled) red herring? No bottle smash after all!! Was there one in the script?
I’ll pause here and be back with the tag (which I’ve had to split in two so prepare yourselves) – cannot wait to hear your thoughts everyone!!!
LOL That Krutiov gun photo reminds me of a Lord Of The Rings poster I used to have. There’s a character pointing a bow and arrow and no matter where you are in the room it looks like it’s aimed straight at you! Freaky! I can’t remember which bookmark, but one of the header ones has a photo of Lee holding a gun in a shot that’s kind of similar too.

Every time I see this scene, I giggle at the fact that throughout everything that takes place on stage and all the chaos, Amanda’s purse remains perfectly on her shoulder – all the way through the bow, no less! That takes serious skill and technique. Maybe Leatherneck should let her teach a course on effective purse use to all the female agents.

This ending (the bows, holding hands, and distractedness) always reminds me of the ending to Foul Play with Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn. I know SMK likes to give shout-outs to other films; not sure if this was intentional or just coincidence.

Yes!!!!! I love Foul Play so totally get what you are referring to Raffie! At the end of the Mikado! 🙂
I think you could be on to something, it makes sense this is a tribute or nod to it – as they are both of a similar genre with crime, action and comedy all mixed in.

I often wondered about how closely Phillip and Jamie observed Lee. Based on the behavior of some of my students I think boys tend to focus more on the action than the person performing the action. However, Jamie seems to be more observant that Phillip. I’ve read fan fiction where Jamie actually brings this up about seeing Lee. Back in “The First Time” Jamie got a good look at Lee as a pirate and asked Amanda, “Who is this man you’re speaking to?”
By the time we get through this scene it’s all been pretty absurd. It seemed to be that kind of episode.

I agree that the actors must have just been trying to save the play with some improv. My favorite part of this scene is Dotty and Kids as well. And I always wonder what must be going through Amanda’s head right then with all three parts of her world colliding. There she was doing spy work and looking also rather connected to Lee while the whole time her family was there watching…

My husband and I just read an Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot short story and he said “Mon Dieu” which means “My God” for those who didn’t know.

I have to agree with Philip and Jamie’s assessment of this play. The “improvised” parts improved it about 10 times over! So much better as an improv play than neo-weirdness, and Amanda has a talent for improv! XD

Ms. Chanteuse is indeed Faith Ford aka Corky from Murphy Brown. I was wondering the same thing if Philip and Jamie, or Dotty for that matter would remember Lee? It would have been fun if one of the boys had said ‘Hey look it is that secret agent guy!’.
Considering the Neo Absurd aspect of this play, I think the Actors just played the scene as best they could. Maybe figuring it was part of the script that they were NOT told about so they would do their best ‘The show most go on’ routine?
And this shot of the audience is the one I commented about before in that it may be from an earlier Mel Brooks film? But, it is most certainly stock footage.

I could be wrong as it has been a long time since I did any theater… but I think that the last to bow is the lead actor. I think that is cheeky behavior for the understudy. 🙂

Oh wow! I never looked at that is this way before.

In the script version on Petra’s site, Amanda tries to brain Krutiov with the wine bottle, but alas (as we saw earlier) it is a prop bottle made of candy glass.

LOL – I’m being interrupted so much by my loving family that I didn’t see your last sentence about the prop bottle.

The actors in the play take the motto “the show must go on” very seriously. Lol. I do wish that Philip and Jamie would remember Lee just a little. Would have made an interesting twist in the story.
