6/6 Season Four:Episode Twenty One–A Matter of Choice–Scarecrow and Mrs King

It’s time to finish up A Matter of Creepiness! rofl.
Back to the airport and they are loading up the plane with the crates… it’s getting close to departure time.. 4.21 AMOC.avi_002476609Francine is seen trying to cut her binds in her crate.
[Now that’s a sentence I never thought I’d type rofl]

Lee and Billy head to the airport.. the airline worker recognises Brody and directs them to him.4.21 AMOC.avi_002510643 Lee takes off (get it haaa) toward the plane in his airplane trailer thingy..
Brodie tells the pilot they can take off…
Francine breaks her binds.. and has something hidden in her shoe heel to bust the padlock.4.21 AMOC.avi_002565098

[Guys, why is the above image so flippin funny?!]

I’m going to cut to the chase here..(literally)…
There’s a shootout between Lee and Brody on the plane while taxiing on the runway.4.21 AMOC.avi_002579913

[Hey Brody, Lee’s not dealing with a concussion for this gun fight.. you gonna lose!] 4.21 AMOC.avi_002621287

Francine gets free. and stops the pilot from taking off.
Brody and Lee tussle and Lee wins.
[Zero concussions this time!!! hoorah!!!!! Actually no boooo  I would have liked for Brody to have a concussion!!! boooo to zero concussions!!!!]4.21 AMOC.avi_002673340
Francine gives Lee a big thumbs up and looks to be having the time of her life. lol. and… Awh!! 4.21 AMOC.avi_002675342
[Go Francine!!! haaaa..
In fact, she’s so happy I think she could ditch Jonathan and move on just fine!
You know I use to have fun exploring action finales for goofs but they just aren’t as fun to me anymore… or very quirky. this one was super straight forward.. I’m happy to just get it done and move on. lol]

Tag time!
Thanks again to peacockdancer for transcribing!!!! We get Amanda in the tag this time- hoorah!!! so of course we are going to include the whoooooooole thing. In detail!!! Here goes:
(Nighttime. Amanda’s house. The Wagoneer is parked in the driveway and the Corvette is parked in the street.

Cut to the kitchen, where Lee is helping himself to some cream from the refrigerator and adding it to a cup of coffee.)4.21 AMOC.avi_002684951
Lee: Well, Dunleavy’s research is safe…
(He closes the refrigerator door. Carrying his mug, he walks over to join Amanda at the sink, where she is drying some dishes. There is a laundry basket on the counter next to her.)
Lee (continuing): … And Brody is where he should be. [In Hell??!!]
Amanda (as she works on the dishes): Yeah.
Lee: In federal prison.
[Ah boooo Lee is no fun!]
(He leans back against the counter, satisfied.)

[Can I just pause for a moment and take this all in???  Isn’t it lovely to see them having this conversation in front of that window, where Lee kept popping his head up wishing to speak to her, and now they can just be normal people haaaa,,, but secretly married because you know… danger danger].
Amanda:
And you’re back here where you should be, with me.
[Awhhhhhhhh – exactly! ]4.21 AMOC.avi_002698565
Lee: You bet. (He smiles and sips his coffee.)
Amanda (drying a plate): Hey, if you drink that coffee, you’re not gonna be able to sleep tonight.4.21 AMOC.avi_002701368
Lee (ruefully): Yeah, well if I don’t drink it, I’m not gonna be able to stay awake.4.21 AMOC.avi_002702569
Amanda: Well you don’t need to stay awake, you need to get some sleep … about 36 hours worth.
[lol this is such an old married couple exchange! But I must say: Lee does not look like he could sleep for 36 hours lol. ]
Lee: Well… (He rubs his eyes tiredly and yawns.)
[Nice try I’m not buying it Lee looks too darn good to be sleep deprived or it’s just plain not fair!!]
… As soon as I wrap up Jonathan’s debriefing, I’ll sack out. And leave a wake-up call for Tuesday.
[I hope wrapping up  ‘Jonathan’s debriefing’ is code for kicking his butt.]
Amanda (curiously): You don’t think Jonathan’s such a bad guy anymore, do you?
[what?! haaaa – and this suggests Lee told Amanda all about him. I can see it.]4.21 AMOC.avi_002718585
Lee: No. He just made the mistake of trusting the wrong person. He was only to help Francine.
[What???? Words do not adequately convey how disgusted I am to hear these words come out of Lee’s mouth..
He meant well! and he was real sad about drugging Francine!
When I mentioned earlier that these days you would not see drugging and sexy times put so closely together – this is what I meant. Good boyfriend/ (nonconsensual!) drugging / sexytimes would not be anywhere near each other if the writers were going for good guy boyfriend these days.
I’m happy to put this plot to rest… I can see how this kind of plot could be triggering for some people. I wonder if I should put a trigger warning at the top of the episiode.. serious question. hmm.. ]
Amanda: Well… What do you think’s gonna happen with Jonathan and Francine?4.21 AMOC.avi_002723390
4.21 AMOC.avi_002726593Lee: We’ll know in about two weeks. They’re taking off on vacation together tomorrow.
4.21 AMOC.avi_002731398
[rofl. didn’t Francine end the last episode having 2 weeks off?! haaaaa]
Amanda (smiling): Really? Gosh, I hope that works out.4.21 AMOC.avi_002731798
[yeah true love, blah blah. Clearly Amanda is way more optimistic and romantic than I… yeahhh let’s just skip over all that messy drugging. Actually if I saw Stone make amends I could have done the whole redemption arc for him, but this all seems way too easy. He was mislead. all good.]
Lee: Yeah. Well, you know what they say: Everything comes out in the wash. (He takes another sip of coffee.)
[And he does mean everything: even a good old drugging!
Oh guys my attempted jokes are seriously sardonic today aren’t they. More than usual! I hope they are being taken in good jest !!!]
(This reminds Amanda of something.)4.21 AMOC.avi_002742609
Amanda: Ooooh, speaking of the wash… Something of yours came out in ours… (She puts down her dish towel and steps over to the laundry basket.)
Lee (dismayed): Oh, no, not another sock. (He sets down his coffee and quickly steps over to join her at the laundry basket.)
Amanda: Nope. Not a sock.4.21 AMOC.avi_002747814
(She pulls out a pair of blue boxer shorts and holds them up for Lee to see. 4.21 AMOC.avi_002748615Lee glances at her in embarrassment and then closes his eyes regretfully.)4.21 AMOC.avi_002750216
Lee: Oh…4.21 AMOC.avi_002751418
Amanda (amused): I’d recognize them anywhere.
4.21 AMOC.avi_002753820
(The camera freezes on them looking at each other, Amanda holding up the boxer shorts between them.)

The end!

Aha!!! I remember hearing lots of references to blue boxers before I saw this episode, and it all finally made sense after this!!! so now I get all those comments I see around about blue boxers!
At least they tied the 4th dimension of laundry into the tag… better than nothing I guess.

And this tiny little exchange about his blue boxers is totally breadcrumbs for us fans… and …. I’m here for it!!! haaaaaa..

I struggled with this episode more than the last time I saw it. I think I have no tolerance for Stone’s actions which impacts the way I view the episode… It’s pretty clear by now to anyone reading that I can’t stand the guy, and I hope after 2 weeks vacation Francine is bored with him and moves on. It’s a good thing I don’t write fan fiction. because right now I would go off and write a story of how Francine kicks Stone’s butt, and then leaves him at the altar without a word. Bit brutal I know! But… delicious!!

The writers really did go with the – I’m going to approach the woman I ghosted right before our wedding five years ago, to try to save her from being labelled a traitor by hoping she’ll fall for me again while I lie to her and drug her. but hey, it’s because I love her! So it’s all good right? All excused, minimised and forgotten… I can’t get my head around this one. Soooo I’m not even going to comment on how Lee and Amanda seem to be rooting for them as a couple.

Does anyone think Francine should have ended up with Beaman? I was thinking he was too wimpy for her, and she could play him too easily… Seems what Francine is looking for is someone who plays her, while apologizing and being all self depreciating about it because he can’t help it. Maybe Beaman is too wholesome, and upright a character for her. She seems to like her men untrustworthy. lol. Or incompetent! haaaa.

So overall, again we had an episode with very little Amanda, which is understandable given the real world events happening at the time. Much appreciated that KJ was doing all she could and gave this much. Which really was a lot for her. I would have liked some kind of explanation in the story for why this was the case. This must have been so confusing to the audience as it aired for the first time!

Oh I didn’t count up the Amanda time.. well it was only 2 small scenes so it’s maybe going to be the least? anyone else want to add it up? lol.

Can’t wait to hear your thoughts all!!

Whoooo guess what… 87 down… and one to go!!!
Next up: The Khrushchev List!!!!!!

  1. I agree that Jonathan is not good enough for Francine. He obviously lacks self-esteem and appears to be far less intelligent than her. I don’t think they are a good match. But I disagree – and in some cases, strongly disagree – with a lot of what has been written here. I’d like to offer some alternative views. Rather than respond to comments individually, I’ll try to summarize here.

First – I do not believe, based on what we have seen, that Jonathan is a fundamentally bad person. Brody’s men worked on him for months to convince him that he needed to do this in order to save Francine from being charged with treason. He genuinely thought he was working for the CIA – the “good guys.” While we can all think he is a gullible idiot for falling for this, the fact is, we were not privy to what they told him, and how they were able to convince him. Lee, on the other hand, was there for the full debriefing. If Lee thinks that Jonathan isn’t “such a bad guy after all,” I take that to mean he was convinced by what he learned (which is a lot more than we learned). I do not think we can say with certainty that Lee, or Francine, or even Amanda would not do the same thing under similar circumstances. Again: Jonathan loves Francine and thought he was saving her life. And we also saw that he incredibly upset – anguished, really – when he met with Brody the day after he drugged her.

A lot has been made of the fact that Jonathan administered the drug when Francine was in a “compromising” situation – in her nightgown, in bed. Well, unfortunately, just like with Maria Von Clausen in All the World’s A Stage, that’s the way this drug has to be administered in order for the victim not to realize what happened. They need to wake up in their own bed. I think it was pretty clear from the way they organized that scene how it went down. Jonathan and Francine had some romantic catching-up by the fireplace, drank some brandy, and Francine went off to change in to “something more comfortable.” The brandy was drugged with something that made her sleepy (we know this because we saw Jonathan wipe out the inside of the glass before administering the hypodermic). Jonathan did not have sex with her before doing this. If he had, it would mean he took his clothes, slept with her, then put them all on again to administer the drug, then took them OFF again to sleep next to her for the night. That makes no sense, especially because he was so upset about what he thought he had to do. I absolutely do not believe he had sex with her, not before, and certainly not after he administered the drug (the latter would be rape).

Regardless of all of this, I am surprised that Francine would give Jonathan another chance after this, because I would think it would bring up memories of a long-ago trauma: the times she was drugged, repeatedly, by Mrs. Welsh in The First Time and gave up the names of other agents. Do you remember how many agents died as a result of the information that Francine gave Mrs. Welsh? SEVEN. Plus the “man with the red hat.” So eight people. I am not at all offended by Lee’s opining at the end of A Matter of Choice that Jonathan is not such a bad guy. You know what did offend me? At the end of The First Time, when Francine said something teasing to him about Amanda (“You two are adorable! I hear she knits, or something,”), Lee responded with “I’d zip it, Loose Lips.” That seemed to me to be a shockingly callous, hurtful thing to say to someone who had been victimized the way that Francine had been, at a time when she was no doubt feeling incredibly guilty. But I digress.

As for Francine today, the fact that she is independent and extremely competent at her job – that she has “succeeded in a man’s world” – is inspiring. I strongly disagree that it means she will not be able to have a successful long-term relationship. That would be a very sad lesson indeed for the young women watching the show. It certainly is not the message I got when I was watching as a teenager. Francine and awesome women characters like her in the 1980s and early 90s were inspirations to me, and now I can happily say that I, and many, many women around me – including women of Francine’s generation – have achieved highly successful professional careers in DC while also being in happy relationships. Francine is an amazing woman. I have no reason to believe that the right man for her isn’t out there, just like Lee was able to find the right woman in Amanda. She just hasn’t found him yet.

    1. Good point about the clothing. But Francine had a line in Billy’s office about taking the antidote just before they had sex. She breaks off and changes her wording but you can tell that’s what she means.

Maybe Stone put his clothes back on because he felt uncomfortable and guilty questioning her half naked?

  2. I remember watching the disintegration of season 4 in real time. This episode made me screaming crazy because even back then there was nothing acceptable about Jonathan‘s actions. On the other hand Lee and Amanda are so cute, such a shame we didn’t get more.

  3. Love the end of that fight with the thumbs up exchange. IWSOD your comment about where Brody should belong was so bad but sooo hilarious!

I think Francine’s an idiot to take Stone back. But I thought that from the beginning of the ep. I don’t see her with Beaman either though — I think he’s too wimpy for her. Actually I don’t see her ever settling down with a guy. Her type was established in some early eps as wealth etc. and I think she’s really too independent to be able to last in a relationship.

I feel like she really is what Lee thought he was in terms of romantic relationships. But the big difference was that Lee was simply hiding in that persona to avoid being hurt again. Francine does have a close family tie in her mother according to The Mole so I don’t see her seeking out family or belonging in a romance the same way. And because she’s so independent and has spent so much time proving herself in a man’s world, I honestly can’t see her succeeding in a relationship without either the guy being honestly threatened, the guy just getting fed up, or her self-sabotaging because she wouldn’t think it would last.

    1. And saving the best for last — that delightful Lee and Amanda scene in the kitchen. They are so adorable together! Overtired Lee, who does look more rested than in earlier scenes — I think being around Amanda works even better than coffee for him. The coffee exchange and him coming home to her is delightful. And that boxers moment and his reaction is the best!

Mostly what I enjoy about this ep is overtired, pushing-himself-too-hard Lee — a storyline I love in any fandom. I wish they could have focused more on that and put Francine’s story in another ep. Actually I’d love to have seen her storyline in All That Glitters and tied to the jewelry instead of Lee’s ex, and am toying with a ff idea at some point for that. But usually I skip her part of this except the scenes that pertain to Lee.

    2. Bad but hilarious? I’ll take it!!! 🙂
      It was cathartic 🙂

Whooooo interesting take on Francine! I’m curious to hear what others think!

  4. I want to respond to most of this when I’m a little more coherent and can really process but I had to address the elephant in the room — that line about whether Stone is a bad guy or not. I get that the idea was because he was coming at it thinking she was in danger and it was the only way to save her, that is why Lee doesn’t think he was as bad as he did at first. That said, Stone is a complete and utter dunderhead to fall for such a stupid line in the first place.

And I frankly think Lee and Amanda are both completely OOC in acting like this is no big deal. Amanda can’t even handle searching through someone’s belongings and she thinks it’s okay to drug someone who trusts you during a romantic moment. Not freaking happening. And we know Lee has done Peacock Dances with women who he knew were bad and he’s drugged bad guys with truth serum who were bad, but we’ve never seen any evidence he’d even cross that line. For crying out loud, he didn’t want to search Amanda’s place on Spiderweb when she was only a friend. Sorry, but I don’t buy that he’d ever be okay with someone doing this to a close friend of his and then acting like they still cared.

As far as I’m concerned, this line is an error that only made it onto camera for three reasons:
    1) The writers wanted to keep up the lighthearted tone of the series and not get into the implications of someone being drugged in a moment like this.
    2) Things were so chaotic at the end of the season with Kate’s health problems and the last-minute rewrites that they couldn’t give it the time to properly address this in a way that would be in character for Lee and Amanda, fitting with the tone of the series, and not leave viewers ticked off.
    3) With her illness, Kate was unable to check the script herself and point out how OOC and ridiculous that statement really was.

Knowing those circumstances, I simply mentally rewrite the exchange in my head canon to something to the effect of Lee and Amanda not being impressed by Stone’s actions, and Lee thinks Francine is making a mistake, but he’s trying to be a supportive friend because of their conversation in the earlier post.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

    1. Thank you @LeesMolly, I’m going to stick to your story too. Kate was such a strong voice for quality programming, this last season really suffers from her lack of advocacy. I mean, there are some wonderful and sweet moments, but the plots holes get bigger this season.

        1. Oh I wish I could write ff. Perhaps there is someone who uses a similar pen name?
@iwsod, I think Beaman was totally under utilized. Or even Leatherneck! That’s another unlikely pairing for Francine. However, I agree with you, I think a Francine/Beaman romance would have been heartwarming to watch.

I was wondering the other day – gee how much input did KJ have? is her not being involved partly why we are seeing stuff like this??!!
