Hiya! Here we are.. back at The First Time… 40 years after it first aired. Happy 40th Anniversary SMK!!!

How lucky are we that we can still watch this show and connect with others who are charmed by the show enough to search the internet and connect with fellow fans!!!

We live in interesting times.. So.. Here we go – time to walk through The First Time for the second time. rofl. I’ve been thinking: should I read the first walk through while I write up the second? I’ve decided not to. So please keep this in mind. I want to approach the episode fresh and focus on this walk through it, not the previous walk. So disclaimer: if I don’t credit someone for something and I’m thinking I thought something first lol – please forgive me and feel free to speak up and correct the walk as we go.. I don’t want to be double and triple checking everything or these posts will take a loooong time to write!
One final disclaimer –Warning: I may revert to sounding like a 10 year old with my first silly crush if I stare at the Lee Stetson too long. Hey. No judgement please it’s half the fun of the walk me thinks ![]()
Thanks to Claudia, the smk fan who transcribed all of season 1, and then kindly shared them on her website, which I think is now defunct, however all the transcripts can be found at www.smk-land.com and Claudia’s legacy lives on. I’ll be using Claudia’s transcription. Most of the descriptions are mine though..
Claudia- we salute you!!!!
So starting out we have a few quirky inclusions in the opening credits.. I’m not sure if I remember them all.. if I miss any please share! We have a one off shot of Amanda blowing glasses dry,
![]()
and we have Mel Stuart with his name spelled incorrectly as a one off. ![]()
It always brings to mind the image of his mum watching the premiere with excitement from home, only to find they misspelt her son’s name. Poor Mamma Stewart!! [Hope she had some antacids handy
]
Anyway, the episode starts at a party, with people wearing togas.. it’s quite dark… we hear the crowd be called inside for the costume judging.. ![]()
Hey this is weird, we don’t see the title of the episode for this one.??!! Gosh I don’t remember noticing that before. lol I think we are going to have that feeling a lot!
lol I’m getting side tracked already ![]()
Back to the episode.. We see a waiter (Lee!) making their way to the edge of the party… accompanied by super funky 70’s music??!! ROFL.
It cuts to the edge of the party where it’s even darker lol. We can just make out a roman dude holding a package and looking antsy..
(who knew there were gold watches in ancient Rome. I’m learning!
)
The waiter ditches his drinks tray and approaches the guy who hands over the package. Immediately, baddies show up and start shooting, the roman dude dies, and the waiter runs for it holding the package, with the baddies in pursuit.
Boo to who decided Lee’s cover was waiter, he should have been in a toga!!! grrrrr.. oh well it was so dark I probably wouldn’t have seen much anyway ![]()
On to suburbia..
![]()
I think there’s something about this exterior shot that changes – anyone wish to fill us in?
We find Dotty..
![]()
and the boys… and a ton of food… lol
![]()
in the kitchen. We hear a lady on the tv: But we’re not done yet. And Yankee Doodle Pot Pie must be cooked at exactly 300 degrees for exactly one hour.
![]()
(we even get a close up on the tv.. guess this lady means something
)
Amanda joins them putting a coat over the top of her pyjamas…
![]()
Dotty: Darling, is that all you’re wearing outside?
[Honest question- is this normal behaviour to anyone here? I mean going out in your pyjamas?]
Amanda: Well, I’ve just got to take Dean to the train station, then I’ll be right back…
[Dean. Dean Who?] (Amanda takes a cup from Philip giving him a kiss on the top of his head)
… thank you Sweetheart.
Jamie: Why can’t Dean take himself to the train station?
Phillip: Because they’re in love, stupid.
![]()
[hang on. What does it say about me that I find myself agreeing with the youngest here?! Haaa. Dean can find his own way
Also, I’m over Philip calling his brother names already. Hmm what was everyone’s first impression of this family?! I don’t think I cared about the name calling when I was young and watching this lol.]
Amanda: Because he’s got to go to New York. He doesn’t want to leave his car out in the rain… Where are my keys?
Jamie: It’s not raining.
Amanda: Well, Dean says there’s a 35% chance. The weather bureau pays him to know those things…
![]()
…Jamie, no sugar sandwiches.
![]()
(Amanda moves the sugar away from Jamie, then picks her keys up from the counter. She starts walking out the door.
We see Jamie immediately pull the sugar bowl close and keep going. Dotty doesn’t seem to be keeping an eye on them.. Amanda heads to the door.. )
Phillip: How much do they pay?
[Seriously? Umm this Philip is err interesting]
Dotty: Quite a lot, I’m sure. It’ll be nice when you get married. Then you won’t have to keep running across town to see each other.![]()
(Amanda stops and turns around.)
Amanda: Mother. We’re not even engaged. I’ve only been divorced a year. I need a little time.![]()
[Whoa I don’t think Dotty should be talking about marriage in front of the boys like that if they aren’t even engaged. Maybe it’s just me…]
Dotty: Take all the time you need. There’s no pressure here.![]()
(Amanda looks around the room to see everyone staring at her. ![]()
[Noooo pressure. lol I love the look on the boys faces here! Check out the size of that tiny tv! how could you see what she was doing?!] ![]()
[sure sure.] ![]()
(Amanda turns around and walks out.)
Next thing. we hear Amanda walking along the train platform talking to Dean..
[I love that we can’t see Dean!]
Amanda: And I’ve been having the worst luck finding a job. You don’t need anyone at the weather bureau, do you, Dean?![]()
[Is it just me or is Amanda sounding super chirpy? Like she is trying to sound like this doesn’t matter but it actually really does?]
Dean: Well, actually, I only hire people who marry me.
(Amanda laughs.)
[Ohhh so he’s asked her has he? Hmm yes no pressure Amanda.. and I know this line of his is supposed to be a joke but it’s kinda half a joke, half not no?]
Amanda: All right. Have a good trip.
(They hug.)![]()
[oh rofl. they don’t even kiss. they hug. says so much!]
Dean: Bye. Be good.
[Be Good???!!!!! Yeah Dad!!!! gag!!!!]
Amanda: All right. Bye bye.
(Dean gets onto the train and Amanda blows kisses and stands there waving until the train moves.
Amanda doesn’t look exactly sad to say goodbye to him huh.
![]()
Then she walks away.)
We cut back to the waiter – Scarecrow!!!! gah!!! Lee is still running from the baddies.. ![]()
[Makes you wonder what happened all night!].
Lee is seen scrambling under the train to try and evade them. But they keep following.. Lee runs through the crowd and spots Amanda walking alone toward him.![]()
[His world stops!!! Time slows!!! He feels a weird fuzzy feeling in his chest
Who is this beautiful woman? Where has she been all my life? ![]()
Lee always dreamed of meeting a gorgeous woman at the train station in her jim jams!
err SLAP!!!! Focus iwsod!!!!!]
Lee makes a decision..
and approaches Amanda swinging her around to change direction.
[Probably unintentional: but I like how Lee here completely changes the direction Amanda was heading in- Literally and figuratively!]
Amanda spins around and starts walking with him.)![]()
Amanda: Whoa, excuse me!!!!!![]()
Lee: Just walk with me.![]()
[Did you guys hear that??!!!!
Understandably Amanda is a little stunned.. who is this gorgeous man dressed as a waiter who could be in an Estee Lauder ad??!!!!
And what’s the deal with the random package he’s holding. lol.
And why does no one help Amanda??!!
It’s a good thing Lee didn’t try this on me or I would have given him a right hook.]
Soooo we reach that magical moment on which this blog rests – Just Walk With Me.
I love that not only is “Just Walk With Me” the first thing Lee says to Amanda, it’s actually the first thing we hear Lee say full stop. [I didn’t hear him say anything prior, did you?]
Of course, lol that Amanda’s first words to Lee are responding to his rudeness so politely rofl. says it all doesn’t it haaaaa..
I think they could have finished the series with Lee asking Amanda to just walk with me – and my joy would have been complete!]
I’m just going to dwell here for a while..And get a little light headed..

I’m going to pause… find my smelling salts stat, and I’ll continue where we left off next weekend.. Probably timely for me to dig them up since we will be doing much swooning as the walk progresses!
You all fully stocked?!
In the meantime, anyone have thoughts they’d like to share? Anyone remember the first time they saw this?? Do tell!!!
Hi everyone! Like several others, I just recently rediscovered SMK last year and have been loving streaming it and discovering this blog!
I do like how the episode starts all dark and shadowy…making you wonder!
And Amanda is looking lovely nightgown and all! And I never realized the scarecrow on the cabinet by the fridge! I love the foreshadowing! And like Iwsod, loving how he puts his arm around her and turns her to walk the other way…. ‘swoon’

It’s been a long time since I watched SMK in its entirety, so it’s a pleasure to be able to do this now with like-minded people.
So… here are my two pence.
I think it’s great that we don’t see the face of the “waiter” at first, only his appearance. A tall, slim man with collar-length shiny hair. Not gangly, more athletic. An appealing figure.
The handover is quickly dealt with, just before the bad guys show up and execute him with a single shot. Wow. Good shot, I must admit. Unfortunate for the deceased, but a superb shot. Meanwhile, the “waiter” is making his escape in alarmingly loud shoes. I would have expected someone in that situation to wear quieter shoes, but… just my two pence.
Dotty in her nightie baking. Hmpf. I wouldn’t use my dressing gown for that. Again – my two pence. Sugar sandwich? I actually ate that as a child too, preferably on raisin bread. Yummy.
Amanda in her nightie? I don’t think Amanda planned that, but I suspect Dean called very last minute to be taken to the station. All of you, as you’re accompanying him to the train. I wouldn’t do that in my nightie, just with a coat over it. I find the farewell very “sparse”, sober, impersonal. Is that how you say goodbye to your partner/boyfriend? Just a hug and a “be good”? Wow.
Then you see the “waiter” behind a train, quite dirty trousers, dusty shoes. Still on the run from the bad guys. It must have been hours he was on the way from the handover to Arlington station. Maybe he managed to have a nap somewhere. He certainly doesn’t look sleep-deprived. Exhausted, yes. Which is probably why he finds it easy to intercept this attractive woman of about the same age and turn her life upside down.
Did you notice how quickly he switches the package to his other hand so he can reach for her and take her in his arms? He doesn’t take her arm or wrist. No, he embraces her and speaks for the first time in this episode. ‘Just walk with me.’
IWSOD, where’s the smelling salts? ‘faint’

Wow. 40 years later. I was recently ill and while lying on the couch flicking through the TV channels, I happened to stumble upon an SMK episode. Holy cow. I had completely forgotten about this series. And the butterflies from back then.
Lee Stetson, my first great love. The first “man” who (to me as a teenager) gave me more than just butterflies. Gosh, I have never been SO in love again. (swoon)
In the meantime, I myself am divorced, with two boys. And now I found JWWM… 40 years later, the butterflies have me, an old woman, firmly in their grip again.

I really, really love this episode. My computer died and I finally got a new one. I took a lot of notes on this one as I just love it so! I hope you all don’t mind that I’m playing catchup now!
I love the music. The opening sequence really shows us the characters. Amanda is busy doing all the things a mom does -that we expect an 80s mom to be doing. Then there’s Lee doing all the things expected of a spy– looking good. Oh, and fighting off the bad guys.
Love the title, too. The First Time. I hear that and I think of romantic encounters. The first date, the first kiss. They could’ve called it “The Package” or “The Man in the Red Hat”. I can’t help but think it was to anticipate a long, loving relationship. We don’t usually talk about the first time until later after the relationship has been established. We’re just meeting these people and the writers are already giving us a clue as to what’s going to be. Sometimes the show titles refer to other characters or events but this definitely centers us right on Amanda and Lee.
The first look at Lee is what you’d want of a spy. Beautiful and in a tux. I mean what else do you need to know. LOL Lee isn’t the scruffy, antihero kind of spy. Thankfully.
I do like the shot of Amanda pulling on her coat as she walks past a scarecrow on one side of the door and a vintage American flag on the other. Foreshadowing of Lee Stetson. Her life is never going to be the same…
The boys fussing reminded me of my brothers. They wouldn’t stop, always had to be annoying.
I’ve seen women dropping off their kids at daycare wearing their pajamas. I wouldn’t ever do it! Lol. Because that’s the day I’m in a fender bender. hahaha I wouldn’t be so lucky as to meet a gorgeous spy.
The scene of Amanda hurrying, grabbing her coffee, the umbrella, all the while talking to her family is such a mom thing. And all with the air of this is normal life– wearing your pajamas out, driving someone who doesn’t want his car wet. And her mother is just perfect– adding comments that aren’t helpful but she’s going to use the opportunity to give her opinion. I know some women like that. Dotty goes about it in a more pleasant way though. When it’s happening to you it gets annoying after a while. Another clue to Amanda’s personality. She just turns, answers her mom and goes on her way. Me? I’d be like “cut it out already! I don’t even know if I like the guy! We hug goodbye, no kiss! Not even a quick one!” I’d be saying it very loudly too! ha
I guess they’re in a hurry but Amanda and Dean aren’t holding hands at the train station nor is there a quick kiss. A hug and he tells her to be good! Ugh. Made me wonder why she’s going out with this guy.
Lee apparently has been playing cat and mouse all night trying to keep the bad guys from getting the package. Despite the fact the agent who handed off to Lee said get this to headquarters what he really meant was get this to the man in the red hat who will be riding this particular train and he’ll get it to headquarters. 😉 I don’t know maybe Lee got a message to the man in the red hat that he’s being hunted and needs to hand it off. Yeah. I’m going with that.
In romcoms, the moment the couple first meets is called a meet cute. I love this one! Amanda’s running towards and Lee’s running from. They’re from entirely different worlds. And never, ever going to have a reason to meet.
Amanda is focused, striding purposely to her next thing. Lee’s looking for a way out of his problem. I watched the scene of him grabbing her and whirling her around a bunch of times. One second, they didn’t know each other and then they do!
Already more touching than Dean and Amanda. I know, I know. That’s how Lee had to stop her but still.
He picked her. Dozens of people walking by and he picks her!
What an engaging beginning.

I was in high school in 1983 and I told my friends to never call me on Mondays at 8:00 pm. I was not available! SMK was my favorite show, not to be missed for phone calls , chores, or homework. I have never watched it again since it was originally on ( 40 years ago 😮)!!! I just found it streaming and started binge watching it. I was looking up who an actor was and stumbled across this blog. JWWM is my first blog I ever read and I have only made it thru a few episodes of commentary so far. But it is very entertaining.

I was 27 when Scarecrow & Mrs. King first aired and I watched it right away. My Dad had us kids watch How the West Was Won and, growing up in Chicago, we knew about Bruce Boxleitner. When I saw him next on TV in 1983 he had lost his “baby face” and was off the charts handsome!

The original script was for Dean and Amanda to be married.
Interestingly, Hallmark had a set of mysteries in the mid-2000s called the Jane Doe series that kind of piggybacking on that variation. A woman has a secret life working for the CIA wile being married with a family. Her partner isn’t gorgeous and he’s probably ten years older than she is, but halfway through her husband starts wondering about them anyway and she has to tell him the truth. So it would have looked even weirder with a hot young Spy like Lee!

That is so bizarre that the original script had Amanda married to Dean, was there not going to be any romance between Scarecrow and Mrs King or was Amanda going to dump Dean

I’m not sure. I think it was eventually supposed to lead to divorce, which would make Lee look like a homewrecker, especially with how good looking he is. I’m not positive though

Wasn’t it going to be a tv series version of the movie American Dreamer with Jo Beth Williams? She was married but leaves him for Tom Conti the spy… it’s a funny movie and I think they avoided Tom Conti looking like a home wrecker

Possibly. I hadn’t heard about that part or of that movie. I may need to look it up.

No, American Dreamer came out in 1984, the year after SMK premiered. And Tom Conti wasn’t a spy, he was just the hilarious hapless victim of a concussion induced delusion. It’s one of my favourite movies and absolutely a must-see if you love SMK.

My daughter just recently started watching her SMK DVDs when I told her I was watching SMK again. I told her that originally Amanda and Dean were supposed to be married. She started laughing and asked how was that supposed to work?
Idk but I’m sure by the 3rd episode Dean would’ve been drinking tea and growing a mustache followed by a reveal as a Russian spy or maybe a tragic death in a storm. You cast BB and of course, shipping is going to happen. They had to have wanted that. Perhaps they thought the comedy would come from her being married –that it would create sexual tension and the comedy would follow from that? But that wouldn’t fly on 80s CBS TV. Thankfully, the chemistry between KJ and BB was there from the being and they altered course.
I read somewhere that KJ loved the series title and the script which I assume was the original pilot. Has anyone read it? I haven’t yet but will some day.

This is formerly Lee’s Molly. I decided on a new user name for the new walk and I wanted to get rid of my old hotmail account. And I had to wait to respond till today just because it IS “Just Walk With Me” day.
I don’t remember my first impressions other than having a hard time figuring out who was Phillip and who was Jamie. (I started in S4) The bickering doesn’t surprise me because of my cousins but I’m amazed they get away with the name calling.
Dean is a loser. What kind of idiot tells their intended fiancee “Be good?” And she says goodbye like he’s her uncle or something. I do NOT see them as a couple at all — even without Lee in the picture.

I always watch both it and Unfinished Business on October 3 because I call it “Just Walk With Me Day”. Both eps aired the same day and we hear the same line on both, plus we get a “Let’s take a walk” on Unfinished Business for good measure.
There’s also a Babylon 5 ep where we hear Bruce’s character say “Walk with me a minute.” Boy did I enjoy hearing that!

hiya! I never really watch on the anniversary because where I live in Australia, due to time zones it would probably have been the 4th in Australia when it aired for the first time in America, and I have no idea what date the show first aired in Australia sooooo I vaguely celebrate it, but enjoy hearing from others who do mark the date 🙂

A few pretty random things –
I swear there are scenes in the opening credits that never appear in the series itself, right? The bit with Lee as the cab driver and Amanda having dropped all her groceries in the street? And Amanda lifting the vacuum over her kids in an attempt to clean their room? Maybe others. Anyway, it’s always bothered me.
Amanda had such a more natural look in the pilot than how they approached her, particularly in later seasons when she got the awful haircut or did terrible things to her hair with a curling iron and hair spray. Her kids say she looks “frazzled” in the pilot but honestly, it’s her best look.
The pilot episode is a banger, through and through. Aside from the fact that the presence of cell phones would make certain plot points obsolete or the old fashioned notion that bullets never hit their targets and therefore aren’t really lethal, the show is as delightful to a modern audience as it was then. (I think.)
I watched this show when it originally aired from the age of 10-14. I guess I’m the same age as Phillip King which is probably what also drew me to the show — kids my own age with a single mother raising them. I used to watch this show with my mom, I do remember that. We both agreed Bruce Boxleitner was cute. Our tastes in men diverged after that and I doubt we ever agreed on anything like that again.
Last October my brother, sister, and I were cleaning out my mom’s apartment after her death. We all went through old papers and things she’d saved together, which was nice. We came across a mother’s day card / poem I’d written for my mom which said something to the effect of “I like my bike, I like my room, I even like my brother; but most of all, in all the world, I really like my mother.” It honestly did not sound like my writing style at all, even as a 10-year-old, and I can tell you that, while we laughed at it, my brother was mighty confused / hurt by it as well. But my mom had kept it as a sweet card her child had made for her. Like so many other things we had to make a decision on keeping or tossing, the card with the poem got tossed. Flash forward eight months or so to this summer and the fact that “Scarecrow & Mrs. King” was on Tubi somehow signaled me like a beacon. I decided to re-watch. I hadn’t seen the show since it originally aired when I was a kid. We didn’t have a VCR in those days, so I never had made any VHS recordings of it. I was amazed at how many bits and pieces of the show I had still remembered but yet really experiencing it freshly all over again. And then I got to the point in the S1 episode where that poem actually originated from. I nearly fell off my chair. I have zero recollection of writing that down from watching the show, and yet, I so clearly did. The timing of me finding that card in my mom’s apartment and randomly, for the first time ever, in 2023, sitting down and making a concentrated effort to revisit it while I was still very much grieving my mom, felt like a real strong message to me.
So anyway…this pilot. It’s fun, it’s zippy, it’s got great chemistry right off the bat and, holy smokes, Bruce Boxleitner looks amazing. Like, literally breathtaking in a few scenes.

I watched the original airing of the pilot with my mother, who liked Kate Jackson from Charlie’s Angels. I had just turned 7. It made a big impression on me. The summer before last, I showed it to my mother again and she had no memory of it whatsoever. Alas!
This weirdo toga party with the 70s disco-funk seems very non-DC to me. Maybe they had these kinds of parties in LA? But hey, I was just a little kid and wasn’t living here yet, so what do I know.
I like Amanda’s personality in the beginning of Season 1. She projects both seriousness and softness, and also seems very comfortable in her own skin and her environment. But here is Lee, and he is about to take her out of her comfort zone in a big, big way! And vice versa!
It is definitely bizarre that she left her home in a nightgown to drop off Dean at the train station, without even taking the time to throw on some jeans and a t-shirt. I imagine she had forgotten she was going to do this, and Dean just called to remind her, and now she is REALLY late. I have always assumed this is supposed to be Union Station in Washington D.C., and yes, it is a nightmare to park at. It is not at all surprising that Amanda would have offered him a ride. It’s just a nice thing to do for a friend.

So ironic, I just re-watched this episode about two weeks ago. I forgot how much I really loved this episode.
About this episode, Philip calling Jamie stupid really irks me every time I watch it.
We know that Dotty is a Dean fan, I agree, telling Amanda, once her and Dean get married, she wouldn’t have to worry about dropping him off at the train station, shouldn’t have said that in front of the boys. And yes, Amanda doesn’t seem sad that he’s leaving. Oh well, I often wondered where was Lee all night. We see him running with the package as he leaves the party, (at night) then we see him at the train station. Curious, what brought him there from the party? When he and Amanda met, little did they know their lives would never be the same again.

Iwsod, love your statement about Lee changing Amanda’s direction literally and figuratively! I’ve watched this episode more times than I can count, and that thought never occurred to me!
What HAS occurred to me on each viewing is that the expression on Amanda’s face after Dean gets on the train seems to say “You putz.” 😂

I love the shot of Amanda putting on her coat. This is our introduction to Amanda. At first look she appears as the typical “housewife” hurried in a coat over her night gown. And I admit the 1st time I watched that’s all I saw.
But on a subsequent viewing it really jumped out at me. She is framed by a scarecrow on the left and vintage- style American flag on the right. I love this foreshadowing of Lee Stetson and where her life will be heading soon…….
It’s not swoon-worthy but it fits right in with Lee’s first words…. just walk with me…..
I think those two things are significant moments.

I agree QBureau-SMK, no question Dean is Mr. Dull. Iwsod’s observation about Lee turning Amanda around physically and also in her life is a great insight.
Love your oh my gosh!

I still love how random their first meeting is. Any woman could have come along and it was Amanda. I also actually like her coat and scarf combo, but wondered if the scarf was to draw the attention from her ruffled nightgown peeping out the top.
Iwsod… I agree… What exactly did he get into between that party and the next morning? Best guess is he got stuck somewhere and finally broke free around the time he ended up at the train station. Again, timing is probably everything because who does he happen to meet but Amanda.
The other thing I like about Amanda is her purposeful walk and it’s not drawing attention. I would probably keep my arms up to hide that I wasn’t wearing an outfit under the coat. But she’s confidently walking, which is probably why Lee picks her. And yes, I’m sure he was checking her out too. 🥰
Anyhow, so glad to be starting again! Looking forward to this!

Wherever Lee was all night, he kept his white waiters jacket pristine, it only got wrecked in the biffo at the train station
Amanda is walking confidently, she has such good self esteem and I love that

I love iswod the name of your blog is the first thing Lee says in the series. From a re-watch of this ep, you could have called this blog
Darling is that all you’re wearing outside (Dotty)
Coz they’re in love stupid (Phillip)
My aren’t we a mess (Billy)
and totally agree that finishing the series with ‘Just walk with me’ would have been perfect…..now there is a fanfic idea

Oh how this takes me back forty years! I was so excited to see my favorite Charlie’s angel in a new show, so I tuned in. I hadn’t even heard of Bruce, but oh boy, did he make an impression on me!
I have few thoughts I have about these first scenes: the fact that Dean’s face isn’t shown is pretty indicative that this guy is not important and is not going to be around for long.
Dotty really annoys me here when she’s pushing Amanda to get married again so soon. Ugh! Amanda’s reply was way nicer than mine would have been.
Love the foreshadowing of the scarecrow centered in the background while they’re talking in the kitchen.
Lee is lucky he chose Amanda at that train station, because if some man grabbed me, I would have punched him. Then again, if that man looked like BB, maybe I would have been too stunned to do anything but stand there drooling.

I don’t know how I’d have responded. I might have been too caught off guard to react immediately. But if he made it as far as saying “Please” with those eyes, I think I’d have taken the package if for no other reason than to pacify him and plan to dispose of it when he wasn’t looking. But then seeing him get beaten up would have convinced me for sure.

Ah The First Time, it’s so great because Lee and Amanda’s lives will never be the same and it’s beautiful, their love story begins here.Just walk with me indeed, neither of them knew how much that they needed each other and it’s just incredibly romantic!

Hello!
I know we are not supposed to comment on future events on the show, but after that first shot of Amanda’s house, she must spend the rest of the series doing a reno on the front and two sides of her house.
As cute as this opening is, I wish everyone (Dotty, Dean) would stop linking her income/job with being in a relationship with Dean, even Amanda asks Dean for a job.
LOVE your comment iwsod that Lee literally changes the direction that Amanda is going, on the platform and in life
I am old enough to have seen this when first aired, it is the first time I had heard a rain forecast expressed as a percentage, see Deano did have some impact:-)

Right! Maybe she’s hoping Dean doesn’t notice next time and drives past it? 😂 (A change of direction of a different sort.) Well it’s one way to put a halt on the marriage/income conversation.

laugh Love it, IWSOD!
No, it’s not unusual to go out in just a coat over a nightgown in the SE US, but generally you don’t do it if you’re going to be leaving your yard and/or getting out of the car. Why is it again that Dean needs an escort to the train platform, anyway? (Oh, that’s right, because he needs to lead her to the person she’s actually going to marry…wait a minute, did I just assign a good intention to Dean?!)
Also, I love the scarecrow in Amanda’s kitchen. Someone apparently was throwing in Wizard of Oz references even before S3! 🙂
I’m old enough to have watched the show in first-run and I do have memories of a few episodes, but unfortunately this isn’t one of them. So I saw it the first time a few weeks ago, when I did my first rewatch. All I was trying to do at the time was figure out if Bruce Boxleitner was left-handed (cf. Sheridan on Babylon 5 being left-handed), so it is ENTIRELY AND 100% HIS FAULT that I ended up actually becoming a fan of this series!
Although, really, Lee, going under the train?! You really do think you’re indestructible, don’t you? I mean, it’s not that much of a jump to at least try and go over one of the couplings….
Anyway, those are my initial disjointed thoughts. On to the next post!

Hey all, I forgot to say – I don’t know how many posts this episode walk through will be yet – I’m currently up to 7 and still going. I’ll update the blog post title once I’ve finalised it.
