Walk 2-3/10 The First Time 1.01-Scarecrow and Mrs King

Lee’s in the coat elevator…  1.01-TFT.avi_000410844_thumb_thumb_tThe elevator arrives at Security Level 1, and Lee exits.. 1.01-TFT.avi_000419352_thumb_thumb_tHe’s joined by Billy who is waiting for him with their little buggy oh rofl. I’d forgotten about these! 1.01-TFT.avi_000426059_thumb_thumb_t
Billy: My, aren’t we a mess. You okay?
Lee: Fine. Just fine.

(The two get on the back of a cart. They ride down the hall.)
[Someone else is driving the buggy? oh that’s too funny!!!! Is that all they do all day? Is that driver an agent who messed up and is now being punished? is this in store for Lee?! 1.01-TFT.avi_000434067_thumb_thumb_t
Billy: They tell me you lost the package.
Lee: Don’t I get any points for making a miraculous escape? I’m only saying it was no day at the beach. What do you say, Billy?
[Points? Lee sounds about 10 here!]
Billy: Straighten your badge.
[Oh yeah this is where that famous line is seen!] 1.01-TFT.avi_000439906_thumb_thumb_t

(The buggy stops. Billy and Lee get out. Francine is waiting at the door.)
Francine: Well, I understand you gentlemen have to report to the principal’s office.1.01-TFT.avi_000449015_thumb_thumb_t
[Ohhhhh yeeaaah that’s why I don’t like Francine Winking smile ]
Billy: Tag along, Francine.
Francine: Why do I have to go?
Billy: One of the chores of being my assistant is helping take the blame.
[Francine is Billy’s assistant????!!!!!!! and is that the biggest handbag we’ve ever seen? Does she carry her typewriter in there?]
(Billy opens a door – it looks like a version of the bullpen, but has a sign outside: “Internal Affairs Section”. The trio enters, Francine looking at Lee,
questioning what Billy said to her.)

We cut to a dude with figurines on his bookshelf?! rofl.
1.01-TFT.avi_000470070_thumb_thumb_t
Dirk: I understand you managed to misplace a package containing highly sensitive information.
Lee: I didn’t misplace it. [yeah he deliberately handed it to a stranger. get it right!!!haaa] 1.01-TFT.avi_000466066_thumb_thumb_t
Dirk: Oh. What was in this package that you didn’t misplace?1.01-TFT.avi_000474074_thumb_thumb_t
Gosh why does Francine get to watch Lee get a lashing like this? It’s so interesting to compare this Lee to later Lee in similar situations.. Hmm..
I can’t wait to hear what you all think!

Lee: As I’ve already said, I’m not sure. (Dirk looks at Billy. Billy looks back at him, then pops a pill in his mouth.) Frank Warner, our operative in Georgetown, contacted me, said that he was being slipped a package of information at a party, and would pass it on to me. I went undercover as a waiter… (indicates torn tuxedo)1.01-TFT.avi_000493660_thumb_thumb_t [you want a medal Lee? that’s super clever going undercover as a waiter, I bet no one has ever thought to do that before! oh dear Lee.]
…I grabbed hold of the package from Warner and I ran. A second later, he was dead. Now, I’m not sure what the exact information was, but it was supposed to be a key to plugging our leak.
Dirk: Leak, Scarecrow? Oh, I’d call it much more than a leak. I’d call it a flood! A tidal wave! (He gets up, walks around the room.)
[Dirk the Jerk sounds like he’s ten too. What’s worse is that his dialogue is just super boring! Me thinks Dr Smythe’s dialogue is a hundred times better!]
… We can’t sneeze around here without the KGB knowing about it.1.01-TFT.avi_000498064_thumb_thumb_t
[we see a few close ups of the people in the room as Dirk rambles.. Interesting to see how close up the photos on their ID cards are. lol looks weird]1.01-TFT.avi_000510043_thumb_thumb_t…Every time we make a move on Russian intelligence, anywhere, anytime, we get sabotaged. Even  missions called on 24-hours notice, boom, they get us.
[Gee maybe you shouldn’t have people in the room who don’t have a need to know – like Assistant Francine. You know those little people you hardly notice are there Winking smile rofl!!] 1.01-TFT.avi_000526059_thumb_thumb_t
(slowly, looking at Billy:) We’ve lost four agents in the past 2 weeks. (Lee sits there, stone-faced.)1.01-TFT.avi_000534034_thumb_thumb_t
[4? That’s actually really awful!]
They know what we’re up to. And they’re getting the word out to their people instantly. And I want to know how.
Billy: If you forgive me, Dirk, finding out how is my department, not yours.
Dirk: That’s true, Billy. But, when a month goes by and your boys
(looks at Francine) and girls, can’t seem to do diddly, then Internal Affairs moves in to find the weak link.
Lee: I wish you wouldn’t look at me when you say “weak link.”
1.01-TFT.avi_000562028_thumb_thumb_t
[I think this is supposed to be funny, but I don’t see it]
Billy:
Dirk, we have done diddly. We’ve monitored every known communications system in the D.C. area, to the point that we know that the KGB isn’t using any of them.

Dirk (sarcastically): Fabulous. How are they talking to one other? Smoke signals? And now you tell me that we might have had a clue to this thing, but our quarterback here (looks at Lee) fumbles the ball.
(The secretary opens the door and looks in.)
A woman interrupts with a message:  Excuse me. Uh, Mr. Stetson? (Lee turns around.) I thought you’d want to know, they just located Special Agent Guthrie.
1.01-TFT.avi_000590023_thumb_thumb_t
(She leaves and closes the door. Lee smiles at the others.)
Lee: The quarterback just recovered the ball.

Or… did he?? don’t look too smug Lee…
On to the morgue (uh oh!) to find Guthrie (the guy in the red hat) is dead. [Double Uh oh. I love how smk shows us Guthrie’s dead body. Aie. It was enough to tell us he’s dead lol. Looks like they shot him, and he didn’t have the package on him when they found him.
Wouldn’t the baddies take it if they shot him? so how would they know? And… how did the baddies even find Guthrie given he was never given the package? me confused. [Did the baddies kill all the men in red hats?!]

Guthrie came in still alive, and spoke with the doctor before dying.
Doctor: … He was still alive when we found him. He did say he was supposed to see you, Scarecrow, but that you never showed up.1.01 TFT.avi_000610043_thumb
[lol this doctor is kinda quirky no?!]
Lee: I bet she didn’t give it to him.
Dirk: Who? Who?
Lee: The lady I gave the package to.
1.01 TFT.avi_000622022_thumb
Dirk: You gave classified information to a stranger?! That violates every procedural ordinance ever written!
Lee: Dirk, I didn’t want to lose the package.
[so he gave it to a woman whose identity was unknown. You know – it’s interesting to loop back to the start having only recently walked through suitable for Framing! this scenario really is ripe for a redo that goes wrong!!]
Francine: It was the same ploy that Lee used in Munich in his brilliant rescue of Dr. Forbisher’s formula. His methods might be unorthodox, but the Scarecrow always delivers.[Excuse me while I gag… Gag!!!]
Lee: I owe you a drink.1.01 TFT.avi_000638171_thumb
[oh no hang on.. more gagging.. no no noooo no. Just no.]
Francine (without looking at him): You owe me a dinner.1.01 TFT.avi_000642008_thumb
[Oh noooo the gagging is getting really, really bad here!!!]
Dirk: If he always delivers, where’s the package, and where is this lady, and why wasn’t I told about Munich?
[Yeah thanks for that Francine! The old – He’s broken all the rules before you just didn’t know it argument.. like that one ever works!]
Billy: Lee, who is this woman?
Lee: I don’t know.
Dirk: You don’t know?1.01 TFT.avi_000654020_thumb
Billy: Dirk.
Lee: Whoever she is, if she still has the package, she’s in a very tight spot.

[Yeah and it’s all your fault Lee! I love how in all this Lee never once takes responsibility for anything (especially my severe gagging attack!!).
I much prefer later Lee – this Lee comes across to me as pretty immature..
I guess this way I get to enjoy watching him grow up! Winking smile  I’ll probably be complaining about this for a while lol. [Hope it’s not too annoying!]
but..at least..  Lee, pal, buddy, please give me no more reasons to gag. Thank you.

I’m curious what you all make of the Lee/Francine drink/dinner exchange… though I’d like to pretend it’s not there and not dwell on it, I am super curious to hear what you all make of it- if you would like to share!]

Next thing it cuts to Amanda in her kitchen staring intensely…
1.01 TFT.avi_000665999_thumb
at the package on her counter… uh oh…. 1.01 TFT.avi_000670003_thumb

[Love the little wizard of oz reference on the fridge!] 1.01 TFT.avi_000668234

Moving on to Moby’s Dock which looks to be a fast food joint. 1.01 TFT.avi_000674007

Amanda’s car is parked, the windows are down, and there’s a tray on the side of the driver’s window for Amanda to distribute the food to the three kids – Jamie, Philip and a random girl whose presence is not explained (anyone?). Aie.
How are the kids supposed to drink out of a glass in the back of the car?! 1.01 TFT.avi_000686019

They should have put the back window all the way down – you can see the camera crew in the reflection!
Amanda: …All right, who’s hungry?

Amanda distributes the food kinda, things get swapped around.. there’s chaos wrong drinks, and Ahoy!!! Pirate Lee turns up!!

Lee: Got your Gangplank Burger, Mrs. King.
Amanda: That’s all right, I didn’t order a Gangplank Burger-
(
Lee flips up his eye patch and smiles.)
[Lol do Moby’s Dock staff usually address Amanda by name? she didn’t seem to notice..]

1.01 TFT.avi_000702002
ta dah!
1.01 TFT.avi_000702402

Gah!! 1.01 TFT.avi_000702902
Amanda: …You again!1.01 TFT.avi_000704204

Lee:
You didn’t do what I told you.
1.01 TFT.avi_000704904

[I fully expected that sentence to end with an : Argh me hearty!
I love love love that this is the first line Lee says to her directly (gangplank references don’t count because she didn’t know it was him haaa) and that Amanda challenges him. Ha! Get used to it Lee this is gold!!!! The start of so much not doing what Lee tells her to do haaaaaa!!!!!  Winking smile Oh smk season 1 – I missed you!!!
He has a nerve by the way, if Amanda had given the the package to the man in the red hat, the package would have been secured by the baddies.]
1.01 TFT.avi_000706006
Amanda: There were 25 men with red hats on that train! Let go of my car.1.01 TFT.avi_000709109
(Amanda starts the engine. Jamie leans over Amanda’s seat – put your seat belt on!)
Jamie:
Who’s this man you’re whispering to?
[your future step dad! can’t ya tell?!!! haaaaa!!]

Amanda:
A total stranger, sweetheart.
1.01 TFT.avi_000710010
[I think Lee makes a mistake here trying to approach Amanda while she’s out and so close her kids. Mamma bear don’t like that!! and I have to agree, this is not a situation you would want to involve children in full stop. People who have that package are getting killed!]

Lee:
I want that package!
[ah Leeeee you have much to learn!!
No ‘thanks for not handing it over to any one in a red hat and keeping it safe’, ‘thanks for helping me when I was in a bind, can I have the package back please?’ !!!!! Lee has forgotten his manners. ]1.01 TFT.avi_000714014

Amanda:
Good! I don’t!
Lee:
I’ll come to your house.1.01 TFT.avi_000716383

Amanda:
You most certainly will not!
1.01 TFT.avi_000717784
[oh rofl. how is this for a screen shot?!]
(Amanda to backseat:) Phillip, do not hit your brother in the head with trash!…
[Lee looks to the backseat lol. like hey kid stop interrupting me I’m here on national security business] 1.01 TFT.avi_000719019
(turns back to Lee:)I’ll send it to you… 1.01 TFT.avi_000721221….Where do you live?1.01 TFT.avi_000721888
[I think this Amanda characterisation remains solid moving forward – super polite and calm when she is fuuuurious!!!!]
Lee:
I can’t tell you that.
1.01 TFT.avi_000721988

This guy. ugh. Last Straw!
1.01 TFT.avi_000723089
Amanda: Good. Good-bye.1.01 TFT.avi_000723790

(Amanda starts to back up.) 1.01 TFT.avi_000724391
[This wide shot is pretty awesome. though it’s hilarious how the kids have vanished. Amanda you may have left them behind!!
I love the big grin on Amanda’s face though as she starts driving.]
(Lee, still holding on, follows.)1.01 TFT.avi_000725892
Lee: Wait, wait, hold it! Stop! I have to see you!
Amanda:
No. Are you going to let go of my car?
Lee:
Nooo.
1.01 TFT.avi_000729329
[rofl I love how deep he says this haaaa as she continues to pull away he changes his tune pretty quickly, his pitch rising haaaa. Amanda puts the car in drive, she’s not budging. Lee catches on finally.. ]
… Here, take my card! 1.01 TFT.avi_000731131
(He manages to stuff a card under the windshield wipers. She
drives away with screeching tires.)1.01 TFT.avi_000731631
[Oh phew the kids are back!]
(Lee watches her car peel away.)1.01 TFT.avi_000734167
[LOL more camera equipment reflected.. a massive light from the looks of it.)
1.01 TFT.avi_000734668
Lee watches her pull away.
[I love love love the wider reveal of his full pirate outfit with his knickerbockers rofl!!!!
Is it wrong I relish Lee’s embarrassment at having to wear this? He deserves it talking to Amanda that way booooo.]
Lee calls out: …Call me!1.01 TFT.avi_000735268
[oh gold!!! haaaaa.
I don’t know why but it’s even funnier with Lee looking all pleased with himself haaaaa.. ]
1.01 TFT.avi_000736469
We cut to the station wagon pulling out on to the road, the tray loaded with food still visible.
[oh that’s too funny I love that they showed that!! 1.01 TFT.avi_000737070
Do you think Amanda got home to find all the kids covered in root beer on the backseat?]

The scene ends with Captain Lee still smiling away..1.01 TFT.avi_000739272Gesturing like its all pretty funny. 1.01 TFT.avi_000739773and well it is, but for Lee it’s not supposed to be, I’d prefer he be grumpy haaa.

How are you all experiencing this episode so far??
Do tell!!!
Back with more soon!

The coat lift. It irritates me every time in the first episodes because I wonder how it’s possible that Lee can lean against the wall in this scene. I mean, he enters the coat lift with his eyes on the coats in front of him and the lamp to his right. And you can’t see that there’s an extra door. The wooden door stays where it is, but where does the wall he’s leaning on come from? To me, it doesn’t look like Lee is standing freely in the room…. 🤔 And a lift shaft wall is hardly painted and that clean. Sorry, my inner monk is going a bit mad right now….

The buggy. The first and last time Lee is driven underground. Or is the Internal Affairs Section on a different level than the bullpen? And if so, which one?

Francine. Oh boy… I really don’t like that dress. The associations I have with that colour combo are definitely not PG. Zip it, Mavis. Just zip it. 🫣

Roughing up Lee needs to justify himself. Doesn’t he just look gorgeous with his dirty face and tousled hair? Gosh … the smelling salts please …. 🫠 Does anyone else have trouble breathing just by looking at him? Well, I do. The quarterback looks just ‘delicious’ here. 🫠 Focus, Mavis. Focus.

Where was I? Ah yes, Dirk. I like him much more than Dr. Smythe. He’s a bit too … I don’t know … camp?! Although I find both of them as bosses extremely exhausting.

The quarterback just recovered the ball.” Unfortunately not for long. Even though a sweetly friendly Francine is by his side, Scarecrow still has the problem that he passed the ball to the wrong person…. and to one he has to find again. Dirk: You don’t know?

Lee’s expression in the screenshot is hilariously funny as he looks pleadingly in Billy’s direction. He really is a pretty immature jerk at the start, who never once takes responsibility for anything.

I love the picture with the Oz quote. It’s so incredibly fitting. No. Amanda, you’re not in Kansas anymore either. The hurricane has swept you close to Oz as well.

Moby’s Dock. I wonder how much time has passed between the meeting at the platform and the meeting at Moby’s Dock. It can’t be much, otherwise Dotty… oops… later, Mavis. That comes later.

Lee as a pirate. Does anyone else see that he apparently had his eye closed behind the patch? I mean, he’s not winking, he’s just opening it. And not even fully. Right? He’s really annoyed, anyway. He needs the package, Mama Bear is uncooperative, the kids are loud and annoying. Lee’s behaviour is REALLY immature here, selfish. I wonder why he didn’t just ring the doorbell and ask for the package. That would have been much less conspicuous than this stunt.

And why is he laughing after Amanda has fled? Is it funny to him that a mother of two is concerned about her children’s safety? I’d love to kick him up the buttox for how childish he’s behaving here.

You much have to learn, young Padawan.

  2. One of my newly discovered favorite scenes of “The first time” is when Lee realizes: “Whoever she is, if she still has the package, she’s in a very tight spot.” Giving it a closer look, this is the first time he realizes he puts this innocent lady into danger and IMHO he really cares about it! At the end of the scene it is all there in his eyes. It is the first time Lee cares about Amanda. 🙂

Based on this interpretation, I developed a different view on the following events. I always wondered why Lee went to all the effort to go undercover as an employee of that “pirate drive-in”. If he had finally found out who she was, it would have been much easier to go to her house and simply steal the package from there. Even if he did not know who she was and had just randomly staked out the drive-in (i.e. because it was near the train station?) he could have let checked out her license plate quickly and maybe even arrive at her house before she is getting home in order to get the package. But he doesn’t — and I think it is because he doesn’t want to make another mistake and risk to lead the baddies to her or to her house. So maybe he just wants to protect her? I am looking forward to come back to this thought later.

    1. I much prefer the thought that Lee went to all that effort to help out this lady he put in a tight spot… and he wasn’t solely focused on the case.
He seemed ready to casually rock up to her house if she gave him the address though 😉
I can’t remember what I said now aie. but I’m thinking he was so confused by this normal person he was having to deal with that he doesn’t come across as terribly concerned about her, but.. he really is 😉
I think that’s what my mind is currently going with lol.

    2. I’m not even sure at this point that Lee is REALLY aware of what he’s done with this action. In my opinion, he primarily just wants to get the bloody package back. Amanda is just an emergency that needs to be dealt with. Yes, he doesn’t want to draw the bad boys’ attention to her, fine. But I don’t think he actually realises that he needs to protect her. He has registered that he has put her in potential danger. But that’s not something that would really concern her personally at this point. It just needs to be sorted.

  3. The Lee & Francine exchange didn’t bother me. I think it establishes they’ve been co-workers for a long time. It also establishes Lee’s unorthodox methods.

I liked the scene at the drive-in restaurant. So 2nd time Amanda meets Lee he’s in disguise again. Oh, what is the story behind how he figured out who she is? That she’d be at that place? And I guess he borrowed some employee’s uniform? Fun scene. It really emphasizes he’s a spy and has “his ways”. Lol. Cuz he could’ve walked up to her house or even at the drive-in wearing a suit (I think a tux might’ve been a bit much lol) and said here’s my card & call me.

I laughed at Amanda when she said stop hitting your brother in the head with trash. I had 3 brothers. This seems real to me! Hahaha

  4. Flipping up the eye patch like you couldn’t recognize him with it on …😂
Lee and Francine are “ competitive” friends, work together as a team but also try to one up each other…..
Fashion from the 80’s has not worn well.. I had a pants outfit in high school with Stripes that my mom called a jailbird outfit. 😳
I really wonder how he actually did find her ( what the “ we have our ways” were ) I know they had a security camera in the foyer at the agency, but did they have them at the train stations back then ? He obviously didn’t see her finally get back in her car to go home when she left the train station ( AND I would like to have seen her explain to her mother why she was so late getting back from that !!!) It would take days and days of staking out restaurants to find her that way …. 🤔

    1. rofl. flipping the eye patch was…. Flair 80’sGirl! and Lee has it haaaa..

competitive friends – I’m reading comments from others that see this as friendly from the get go. Ohhhh I really wish I saw it this way too, I prefer it!! gah!!!!
But dinner – that’s for romance.
You owe me a beer – that’s friend zone.
and I’m going to just gloss over the flirty vibe I saw because it grosses me out haaa.

Oh so true. I’m yet to hear any kind of explanation for ‘their ways’ that found Amanda. haaaa..
Anyone want to have a go???

Okay I’ll have a go.. Lee knew what train Amanda got on. So he contacted the ticket collector, and found out Amanda had to pay for a ticket on the train – so the ticket collector wrote out a small fine to go along with it, and took her contact details. ie. he found out she likes to eat at Moby’s Dock. oh rofl. nope can’t do it. haaaaaaa..

      1. Here is my version of how he found her:
The first scene we see after the train station is of Lee being Dropped Off by someone. That means that after he finally lost the “baddies”, he called in to report and request pick up. He also requested a team to stake out the train station to watch for a petite brunette in a coat and nightgown because she would have to return for her car. Wihile Lee is back at headquarters reporting in and finding out what happened to the man in the red hat, they identify her and follow her around. They report to Lee that she is going to Mobys dock and he hurries over there getting a server to let him take their place so he can talk to her.

        1. Hi and welcome seechelle… glad u found us!
Yeah this sounds good to me, I can go with that. Not sure how they knew she was going to Moby’s Dick with enough time for Lee to source the costume but heck it’s so funny it doesn’t have to make sense I’m just accepting it 😄

  7. The very first voice you here at Amanda’s house is the lady for the cooking show. This lady is a shout to Julia Child. Julia worked for the oss during WW2. After the war she trained to be a French style cook and later was on TV for about 30 years and published cooking books. Meryl Streep portrayed her in a movie. By the way my handle means token hetero male. There a lot of these hidden gems through out the show including KJ staring down marks during a scene. The relationship area has been well reviewed so I went for filming angle. Iwsod I know some of these have been mentioned. Should I wait or should I email you the what I have discovered.

Lol quite the handle! 🙂 I don’t know if you are a token anything here now I think about it, I don’t know the gender or sexual orientation of smk fans who stop by, but.. admiration of Lee in a tuxedo seems to be universal yes? 🙂

You can email me if you like, but even better- maybe you could share them with us all as we walk together?
      Glad you found us 🙂

  8. What a wonderful actor John Saxon was–it’s like he invented this particular way of speaking which made him so unique. He was a busy guy in the 80s so maybe it just wasn’t possible to get him to sign on to a series, but I would have loved more of him sprinkled throughout the show. He’s just a delight to watch.

Also delightful….Lee in that Moby’s get up. It’s such an insane way to actually meet up wtih Amanda, I am wondering if the writers were just heavily influenced by Judge Reinhold’s get up in “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” that they wanted to see if it worked for them as well. (Brad flirting in Fast Times while wearing his pirate work costume will never not be funny to me.)

And yet speaking of which, when Lee stuck his head up to Amanda’s car and lifted his eye patch, I think I gasped. Bruce Boxleitner really is just too handsome here. That murderous look he flashes to the back seat of the car

One of the great regrets of the show is that Francine got a little short-shifted as it went on. Francine and Lee have a fabulous bantering relationship that didn’t need to go to the wayside just because Lee was further paired with Amanda. Without being told, I think we can guess that Lee and Francine used to play backgammon and their familiarity while working reflects that. I agree that they are, at this point, mostly bickering siblings but we do see from time to time that Francine is still pining a bit.

  10. OMG I have been watching smk since the first episode originally aired and NEVER noticed the Wizard of Oz reference on the fridge lol!

I love how awkward Lee seems in the first few episodes. You can see him mature as the season goes on. As for he and Francine, I think they had a thing, it ended and she wanted to rekindle it. GAG!

  11. What was the wardrobe person thinking putting THAT dress on Francine? It looks like a striped potato sack.

Lee’s line, “Call me!” cracks me up every time I hear it.

I love that Amanda doesn’t just fawn all over Lee. I’m sure she throws him for a loop–if he only knew what’s coming!

  12. Lee and Francine: I agree with you on all counts, peacockdancer. Their brother-sister dynamic is fantastic and I wish we’d seen even more of it. And I do believe you’re right about Francine being Billy’s “deputy.” I always picture her on the management track, so to speak. She might not be slotting it out in the field as often but her work is still important and Billy leans on her a lot throughout the series.

As a kid I thought the line Amanda delivered about the trash was funny; as a mom to an 11-year-old it’s a stunning bit of realistic comedy. Boys that age are like wild animals sometimes.

    1. You made me spit out my water laughing! So true about boys. I agree that Lee and Francine always seemed to exude a brother/sister dynamic. I never minded Francine back in the day when this first aired, especially as a working woman in those days. Still don’t. This is such a fun pilot and walk-through! Thank you Iwsod!

      1. You’re welcome!! 🙂

For those of us who see Lee and Francine as brother / sister – cool! I see it so differently to you guys, but I love to hear your take, and I love that you know you can share different views here and it’s welcome!!

I just really hope all my gagging while I wrote up that scene wasn’t too loud and gross for ya! 😉

  13. Iwsod, I have never realised before that Amanda saved the day by NOT handing over the package. How did I miss that gaping plothole.

I love your comment re Lee and ‘Aaay me hearties’, this scene would be so much more fun if shot on International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Still trying to work out if Francine is wearing a canvas bag or if she pulled the cover off a chair by the pool and put it on

        1. Yeah!!! It has been a long standing gag to refer to an outfit that isn’t ‘together’ as being a ‘nonsemble’ but I didn’t come up with it – I got curious… and I found who did!!
It was Happycamper back in July 2014 who came up with it!! [In the comments of a lovely little affair 🙂 ]
Your fabulous gag lives on Happycamper! 🙂

  14. I don’t know why Lee thought to try looking at fast food places in Arlington; however, he would certainly take note of her vehicle’s license plate. From there, wouldn’t the Agency’s data base provide Lee with pretty much everything about her?

    1. This cracks me up Nancy!!! It’s so smk huh. So true!
Okay how’s this Nancy – I’ll have a go with some mental gymnastics to fix this!

Ummmmmm…Lee knew where Amanda lived, he was just pretending he didn’t because he would need permission to come to her home and onto her property.
He chose to make contact with her in a public location, with a tray of food attached to her car window, so she couldn’t not talk to him.. (big fail there Lee that doesn’t stop mamma Amanda!)
Ummm… Lee much preferred the excuse to wear a pirate outfit because he loves pirates. just loves them, and he was getting in the halloween mood ya know? Hearties!!! Lee had been searching for an excuse to dress up as a pirate and he finally found one. 🙂 He’s always wanted to wear an eye patch and lift it up like that. argh!

      How’s that? ridiculous enough? 🙂

  15. I found it funny that costumed up Lee found Amanda at a random fast food place but still claims to not know where she lives..still, I am glad to relive this episode as I totally forgot about it where as episode 1 is ingrained in my mind.

  16. This episode is so great! So tightly written. Everything about it is excellent.

Lee: As the series begins, he seems so young, and brash! He has a long way to go before he reaches his potential as a wise and seasoned agent.

Dirk: I love this guy. I wish they could maintain him as a semi-recurring character throughout series. The whole idea of “Internal Affairs” overseeing the goings-on in Field Ops is a tense dynamic that adds an interesting element to the show.

Francine: While Billy refers to her here as his “assistant,” I don’t think that has the same meaning as we tend to ascribe to it today, i.e., administrative assistant or secretary. I think she is his “deputy,” the number-two on the administrative hierarchy (as opposed to being a field agent like Lee). She’s not in the meeting to take notes, she’s there because her role at the Agency is important.

Lee and Francine: I adore their repertoire. Whatever romantic dalliance occurred between Lee and Francine, I always thought of it as being LONG in the past. They really do give me a “brother-sister” vibe, and I think both actors should be commended for the utter lack of sexual chemistry between the two of them. They are both incredibly good-looking people, and yet there never, ever seemed to be an attraction there. Francine is so wonderfully cutting with the “You owe me a dinner” line. This does not come off to me as romantic in any way, just sarcastic banter with a co-worker with whom she is on an equal footing.

Special Agent Guthrie: So, the Man in the Red Hat is dead. Good thing Amanda never passed him the package. In retrospect, arranging for the hand-off to occur on a train was an incredibly stupid idea. If Guthrie was being watched – and it appears he was – he would have no way to escape.

Lee and Amanda: What more is there to say? They are wonderful together. What great dialogue. Bruce and Kate are both outstanding actors.

I wonder how Lee was able to track Amanda down? Security cameras? The Agency certainly has deep resources!

“Philip, do not hit your brother on the head with trash.”: Hahaha. This is one of my favorite “funny” lines of the whole series.

Iwsod, I love all of the pictures you are including, and all of the little details you picked up on!

  17. I’ve always enjoyed how Lee said “I wish you wouldn’t look at me when you say weak link”, would’ve like to see John Saxon in more than 2 episodes.Let’s face it early Lee was a immature jerk and it sets up the drink/dinner exchange with Francine because this is the type of woman that he was used to, it’s really why Lee was so dumbfounded by Amanda because she’s this beautiful, soft, kind woman with absolutely no ulterior motive and he didn’t know what to do with that kind of woman,Lee and Francine were so similar personality wise in the early years and it’s very obvious here but Lee’s in for a major wake-up call because Amanda will rock his world and make his life better in every way!Simply put Francine was the kind of woman that he bedded with no emotions or feelings and Amanda would change all of that and it scared him so much!Love the Moby’s scene because Amanda can’t get away from him fast enough and oh Lee,Amanda is not like the women that he’s used to and Lee saying “You didn’t do what I told you to”?Oh Lee, you’re going to find out that Amanda never does what she’s told and it’s so much more fun that way.Lee really has no manners and Amanda has her work cut out for her but it’s so much to watch how Lee changes for the better and the way he says “call me” because he’s never had to work so hard to get a woman to call him, it’s going to be a journey but such a good one!
