Walk 2-5/10 The First Time 1.01-Scarecrow and Mrs King

Back to Lee’s ‘friends’ … and I love the pig at the buffet table. No that’s not an insult to someone stuffing their face. a pig. there’s a pig!!
1.01-TFT.avi_000918618_thumb
As the camera focuses on the piggy, we hear this exchange off camera:
Lee: Would you care for some pâté?
Amanda: No, no. I’m not hungry. No, no, no, thank you.
(The camera focuses in on a strutting young lady.. 1.01-TFT.avi_000921087_thumb[whoo nice hat Captain Fluffy!
The camera follows the young lady and her most unnatural walk I’ve ever seen. rofl.  she’s walking toward Lee. 1.01-TFT.avi_000922856_thumb

The woman walks over to Lee who appears to be trying to entertain Amanda but she’s not feelin it. 1.01-TFT.avi_000923256_thumbThe woman approaches,1.01-TFT.avi_000924057_thumb and unannounced, wordlessly strokes his chin with her hand, 1.01-TFT.avi_000924758_thumbAmanda sees what’s going on.. 1.01-TFT.avi_000925325_thumb
and Amanda is not amused!1.01-TFT.avi_000925525_thumb
The lady keeps walking away.. 1.01-TFT.avi_000926726_thumbLee’s eyes follow her, and he gives her an up and down checking her out. 1.01-TFT.avi_000928495_thumbAmanda watches on. It looks to me like she gives a bodily huff here – sooo rude!!!! 1.01-TFT.avi_000929262_thumb
Frowning Amanda: Excuse me!
1.01-TFT.avi_000929596_thumb
[Seems the effect of the tux, and feeling out of her element has worn off and Amanda is now fully aware of what a jerk Lee is being. rofl. and… she’s not having it!!!! Go Amanda!!! ] 1.01-TFT.avi_000930363_thumb
Lee: Huh?1.01-TFT.avi_000931464_thumb
(Amanda smiles a super polite smile. Oh yeah, don’t be fooled Lee, she’s mad!)1.01-TFT.avi_000931765_thumb
Amanda: I’m expecting a very important phone call, 1.01-TFT.avi_000933733_thumbso could you just tell me whatever it is you had to tell me?1.01-TFT.avi_000935201_thumb
[Uh oh. Lee messed up.. 1.01-TFT.avi_000936603_thumb
And is starting to see he messed up.

Maybe the women Lee are used to at this point are okay with that behaviour. However, this one is not – and he is needing to keep her happy here to get what he needs.. so he’s messed up!!!]

Lee: Yes. We do have a lot to talk about.1.01-TFT.avi_000937203_thumb (A moment later. Uh oh.. and there’s another interruption! 1.01 TFT.avi_000940640A beautiful blond alien walks toward them.)1.01 TFT.avi_000940740Lee and Amanda notice her approaching.. [Maybe they heard her space ship?! ] 1.01 TFT.avi_000941541
Celeste: Hi, Lee. [Is she trying to sound like Marilyn Monroe?!]
(Given how polite Amanda is, her reaction here is priceless!!)
1.01 TFT.avi_000942342
[Oh nooooo not again!]
1.01 TFT.avi_000943009
Lee (obviously happy to see her): Celeste.
[Amanda’s look is maybe: More of Lee flirting with other women on my time? Not okay!! With the expression above on display surely it’s clear to Alien Celeste that Amanda is not pleased with the approach?!]
1.01 TFT.avi_000944110
Celeste: Want to dance?
[I love her outfit btw!!! Rather cheeky of her to approach Lee to ask for a dance when he is talking to Amanda.. and basically ignoring her. Not cool. Then again, she’s an alien and probably doesn’t understand the concept of human manners so I”ll forgive her 😉  ]1.01 TFT.avi_000945011
Lee: No, I’m sorry… 1.01 TFT.avi_000945779……Um, I’d like you to meet Amanda King… 1.01 TFT.avi_000947280
…Celeste van Kreswinkle.1.01 TFT.avi_000949049

Amanda (shaking Celeste’s hand): Hello.1.01 TFT.avi_000950350
Amanda holds out her hand to Celeste to shake.
1.01 TFT.avi_000950950
Celeste: Oh, that’s marvellous.
(Amanda raises her eyebrows.) You came dressed as a housewife. 1.01 TFT.avi_000953620…Oh, that’s nutty.1.01 TFT.avi_000956690
[I can’t wait to hear what you all make of this little exchange!! I think I’ve previously not given Celeste too much thought.. I’m super curious to hear what you all make of this exchange!1.01 TFT.avi_000957090

Celeste looks super pleased with her burn. When learning about how to related to humans, first learn how to insult people while superficially coming across as polite. rofl. Uh huh.

I’m thinking Celeste wanted to insult Amanda on this viewing – What do you think?
I may have seen this differently in the past who knows. but she was rude by ignoring Amanda initially, and asking Lee to dance and getting turned down. Celeste’s not pleased. So she has a little dig at Amanda – pointing out she’s not dressed up enough – which is totally Lee’s flippin fault btw but Celeste doesn’t know that lol. and I’m starting to get a sense that Lee’s idea of being surrounded by ‘friends’ is maybe different to mine. Celeste is no friend!] 1.01 TFT.avi_000958558
Amanda laughs it off with a big smile.
1.01 TFT.avi_000959559
Lee (noticing how uncomfortable Amanda is): Would you like to dance?1.01 TFT.avi_000960960
[Amanda jumps at the chance to get away from Celeste.. and I like to think Lee offers to dance with Amanda as a message to Celeste – don’t be rude! Because he needs to keep Amanda on side and well, that was kinda mean and it is kinda Lee’s fault he didn’t warn Amanda about the dress code!]
Amanda: Yes.
Lee leads Amanda to the dance floor.
[Here’s a thought: If the timing was different, and the whole Celeste thing hadn’t happened, do you think Amanda would have said yes to the dance?]
We watch them dancing together silently.. 1.01 TFT.avi_000968468Lee is pretty intense with the attention here..
[Back to operation charm Amanda! Is it just me or does this feel like he’s playing an act as they start out dancing here?] 1.01 TFT.avi_000971638Both getting to know each other.. 1.01 TFT.avi_000972539They spin a few times.. and then just stare at each other a few beats.. before they start turning again..
1.01 TFT.avi_000976710
1.01 TFT.avi_000976009Getting a sense for how it feels in each other’s arms..
1.01 TFT.avi_000979179
And.. maybe.. a strange sense that they feel something special there??!!

Suddenly, Lee faces the camera and we see he has his eyes closed. Just for a few beats but lol enough that it’s not a blink okay!! I promise!! lol.

[Hmm Amanda couldn’t see him close his eyes.. Me thinks this moment here – is a glimpse of the real Lee here.. just a glimpse!!! What do you think? ]
Lee opens his eyes.. 1.01 TFT.avi_000979779Amanda pulls back.. to talk to Lee.. 1.01 TFT.avi_000981948
Amanda: How did you find me?1.01 TFT.avi_000983249
[I want to know too!!]
Lee: We have ways.1.01 TFT.avi_000986119
Amanda: I thought only Nazis and spies said that.1.01 TFT.avi_000990023
(Lee pulls back to look at Amanda reacting – ha!!! she guessed!!) 1.01 TFT.avi_000992392Lee: Well, I’m not a Nazi.1.01 TFT.avi_000994394Amanda looks… alarmed? lol.1.01 TFT.avi_000997564 [But why Amanda? You know he’s not a nazi!!!! haaaaa]1.01 TFT.avi_000997931

We cut to Lee and Amanda sitting alone at a table….
[LOL why didn’t Lee take her straight to the table in the first place? So they could dance silly iwsod, and just be grateful don’t question it! haaaaa.
1.01 TFT.avi_000999032Hey! we have a fireplace and champagne – smk code for romance!!!! Winking smile Seems Lee had a seduction in mind here if need be, but it definitely not turning out that way… Amanda has gone and changed the plan – because she’s too clever by half!

Can you imagine if Lee had tried on the full Lee Seduction approach with Amanda ?? and then had to take it all back? Aie.. Sliding doors and all that.. I like to think it’s because he picked up that she’s special and didn’t want to do it..]
Amanda: So you’re a spy?
Lee: Actually, we don’t say “spy.”1.01 TFT.avi_001003403
(Amanda looks up at him, relieved.)
Amanda: I thought you were a gangster.1.01 TFT.avi_001004471
[What do you guys make of this comment??] 1.01 TFT.avi_001005939
[Does Lee look at Amanda’s mouth here?]
1.01 TFT.avi_001006373
He chuckles,
1.01 TFT.avi_001006940
I like how this reaction seems to be a brief moment where again Lee’s performance slips… and it’s right when we see his dimples haaaa..

I see Lee here noticing and bringing himself back to the task at hand. for a moment.. he was enjoying her company, her curiosity and that won’t do!!]1.01 TFT.avi_001012178
Lee: You understand that you can’t mention me or this conversation to anyone. Not your best friend. Not your therapist. Not even your husband.1.01 TFT.avi_001015548
Amanda: Boyfriend…
1.01 TFT.avi_001015749
I understand.1.01 TFT.avi_001018318
[She’s not married? ohhhh she’s not married! Hmm the whole hot little secret affair thing might get complicated here. Hmmm..
How it is Lee could find her at Moby’s dock but not that she was not married (and doesn’t wear a wedding ring).]
Lee: And not just for national security. See, knowing our little secret puts your family in a very vulnerable position. If they don’t know anything, they can’t be targeted.1.01 TFT.avi_001025558
[I don’t think Lee looks regretful enough as he says this!] 1.01 TFT.avi_001026059
Amanda: Mm-hmm… 1.01 TFT.avi_001030897…What about me?1.01 TFT.avi_001030997
(Ummmm…1.01 TFT.avi_001030997?????1.01 TFT.avi_001030997Lee looks down here… 1.01 TFT.avi_001032532
I think he looks at her mouth, but maybe he’s just avoiding eye contact because this is awkward)
Lee’s silent for a beat.. and then responds.. 1.01 TFT.avi_001033233
Lee: Champagne? (He pours her a glass.) 1.01 TFT.avi_001037404
Anyway, you can see why the package is so important. 1.01 TFT.avi_001037904 …Whatever’s in it may stop our leak and these killings, too.1.01 TFT.avi_001041274[What do you guys think of Lee here? The whole Amanda realising she’s in danger and Lee offering champagne thing?
I’m in two minds on this watch.. On one hand, I think it’s smk and supposed to be not serious and treat serious things as though they are not.
On the other hand – It doesn’t reflect well on Lee that he has brought danger to a young family and doesn’t appear to want to right this situation.. not that he should be gushing and so apologetic, but just the briefest glimpse of regret here would have hinted at Lee’s hidden depths and genuine heart – which we see later.. but I’m really not seeing even a glimpse of it here. Maybe it’s just me! I wonder if smk realised this and changed it up as the show moved forward, because my memory of Lee is he always took Amanda’s and her family’s safety very seriously. Just a fleeting observation and I won’t linger further, but I’m curious if anyone else experienced this also?

One final thought – Lee is certainly being open about the package… and clearly hasn’t learnt the concept of need to know at this point haaaaaa.. lucky for us.. Okay he’s probably trying to underscore the importance and recruit her to help him get it back, but he didn’t have to go into that much detail.. Also, the more she knows the more danger she is in… he just said that about Amanda’s family!]
Amanda: Yes. I understand… 1.01 TFT.avi_001041541
[Ummm] 1.01 TFT.avi_001041908
…Now there is one little problem.1.01 TFT.avi_001045912This scene ends here..
[I’m kinda glad there’s ‘one little problem’ given Lee’s lack of regret and concern for bringing Amanda into this thing!! I’m glad to see him squirm just a little.. but.. hold that thought!]
We shall pause here before we find out what the one little problem is.  Lee being a smug jerk is maybe a problem haaa.
Any comments you’d like to share?

  1. Yeah, the eating pig is really funny. But somehow also strangely fitting for the whole scenario Amanda and I find ourselves in. It’s all more show than substance, unreal.

Lee still has one hand on Amanda’s back, the other on her elbow. Even when the strutting young lady feels the need to touch his face without comment to get his attention, he just moves his right hand away from Amanda’s arm. Only when he starts to give her an up-and-down check, checking her out, does he break the physical contact. And I think Amanda is very aware of this and is genuinely annoyed by his behavior.

Amanda: Excuse me!” Yes, Amanda, he’s not thinking with his head right now. Sorry, he’s just a young man “with needs.” Oh, Lee, that’s strike one, and amazingly, he notices that he messed up. Immediately, the player reappears, looking deep into her eyes. But like a moth to a flame, it attracts the next woman… Celeste. Lee smiles happily seeing her, but Amanda’s looks say something completely different. She’s pissed.

After all, he rejects Celeste’s offer. I think that’s also the reason for Celeste’s insulting dig at Amanda’s attire. Thank goodness it’s a costume party, but it was still a low blow. And Lee realizes this after taking a quick look at Amanda. I think he’d been more aware of her appearance and demeanor up until then. A kind of shy but pretty little mouse with an appealing body and a beautiful face. Yes, Amanda is a well-mannered (possibly uptight) and good-looking suburban housewife. But since he desperately needs her cooperation, he tries to make light work of her.

Lee: Would you like to dance?” Hey, I’d accept the offer just to give the blonde alien a good thrashing. But I don’t think Amanda would have agreed to a dance without Celeste’s insult.

Lee’s facial expressions while holding Amanda in his arms during the dance speak for themselves. He doesn’t find her company and the physical proximity unpleasant, quite the opposite. He enjoys the moment, both when they look into each other’s eyes and when he closes his eyes. The way they lean their heads against each other also shows that the physical proximity isn’t unpleasant for either of them. I think that in this moment, both of them are very aware that something is different than with other people. There’s some kind of attraction.

But – Amanda interrupts “the moment.”
Amanda: How did you find me?” Lee’s reaction is sly in my eyes. Before, he seeks eye contact, but after the question, he immediately shies away and reacts evasively. No, Amanda, he doesn’t want to answer.

    Lee: We have ways.
Amanda: I thought only Nazis and spies said that.
    His facial expression is hilarious.

Lee: Well, I’m not a Nazi.
Thank you, Lee. That saves my evening, unlike Amanda’s.

@IWSOD – I think he first took her to the buffet so she could pick out something to eat, and then he wanted to talk to her at the table during dinner. In my opinion, the dance was just a rescue maneuver by Lee to make amends with Amanda. And he found a romantic spot for the full Lee seduction approach. I think that was his original plan, too. But I don’t think he realized at that point that she’s special. He just wants to get on her good side to get the damn package. However, over the course of the short conversation, he realizes that she’s funny and very pleasant company.

And hey – she’s NOT married!

I find the following scene, “Amanda: Mm-hmm… What about me?“, absolutely hilarious. I always see the image of the tumbleweeds in Lee’s head being blown around by the wind while he has no idea what to do.

Lee: Champagne?” … yeah, great, Lee. Good save. Not.

As if Amanda wouldn’t notice. At this point, she realizes there’s more at stake. Her life and that of her children are in danger—and he’s taking it all lightly and clearly doesn’t want to make amends for this situation. He’s not apologizing for anything, and once again, he’s not taking responsibility for anything.

I see it the same way as you, IWSOD. Such a smug jerk.

  2. They dance! He tells her he’s a spy! They could’ve met on a nondescript street corner. Or a coffee shop. I think he’s trying to show her he’s not scary. But also impress her. Especially with that grand entrance. Why is he spending more time with her than is neccessary? 🤔

FWIW, I think the writers were going for an atmosphere as odd and distinct from Amanda’s as possible. SMK was conceived as a fish-out-of-water story so I don’t see this venue is any more than a way to clue us into that the spy world is very different than Amanda’s.

Celeste van Kreswinkle. The name cracks me up. I do wonder if the writers were messing with BB in having to get that out. I don’t think she was trying to insult Amanda. I think she did think that was a crazy costume. She’d have no reason to think Amanda wasn’t one of them so I doubt it was supposed to be mean. I think it was intended to be humorous.

Lee tells Amanda they do have a lot to talk about. Hahaha.(Something tells me we hear that phrase in the future.) Squee!

I also love how Lee tells her “well, I’m not a nazi”. And then cut to Amanda at the table lamenting “you’re a spy?” Made me laugh.

Amanda helps Lee at the train station. Then she shows up at the party thinking he’s a gangster. Interesting choices for a “housewife”. LOL. Must want more than staying home and changing nappies I’d say.

Amanda may have been hideously underdressed but she did her makeup! Her hair in this episode looked good to me. I understand though that behind the scenes it was a mess for KJ.

  3. Celeste’s comment sounds like something Francine would say to Amanda. I read the original script long ago and Amanda had a husband, not a boyfriend. Glad that was changed.

  4. Iwsod, I also wanted to add some thoughts about this observation of yours:

It doesn’t reflect well on Lee that he has brought danger to a young family and doesn’t appear to want to right this situation.. not that he should be gushing and so apologetic, but just the briefest glimpse of regret here would have hinted at Lee’s hidden depths and genuine heart – which we see later.. but I’m really not seeing even a glimpse of it here.

It’s true, Lee doesn’t seem to be outwardly apologetic or unhappy about the situation that Amanda’s family has been placed in. On the other hand, he was protective (in his “bossy” way) from the get-go, when he emphasized on the phone that she might be in trouble and he didn’t want her to get hurt.

I think Lee is purposefully trying to keep himself emotionally distant from Amanda – as he does with everyone else – as a kind of self-protection. This is his M.O. right now. He recently lost his partner, he had his heart broken by Eva two years ago. He doesn’t want to form attachments that might come back to hurt him, so he is intentionally trying not to expend emotional energy on negative feelings like “regret.” (Billy, three yeas from now: “I remember when he didn’t have any emotions at all.”) He is affirmatively trying not to be empathetic. He is trying to be a fully dispassionate agent. It will take time for Amanda to help him break down these emotional walls.

I think that Lee fully expected Amanda to bring the package to the party, and that this would certainly be the last time they ever saw each other. He just wants to retrieve the package and send her back to her happy life, with the understanding that she can’t talk about this to anyone. He’s probably thinking that by acting like this is “normal” for him, she will go away without being scared. There’s nothing he can do to change things, so no reason to waste time on “regret.”

I love the “Champagne?” line in response to her “What about me?” question – it always makes me smile.

I also love their dance, it is so beautifully choreographed, with Amanda’s change of facial expression in response to “Well, I’m not a Nazi…” This is SMK at its most charming!

    1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Peacockdancer. I was kind of surprised I experienced these scenes as I did this time around.. I suspected I didn’t on previous viewings.

My walk through is me sharing my thoughts as I experience the episode unfolding, so there are going to be times where I’ll experience something – then recontextualise it later based on future events in the episode.. or.. in the show..

Some of the explanations you shared about Lee – at this point I had not seen. I was just in the moment..
And made the observations that Lee came across as pretty dismissive of Amanda’s safety to me, on this viewing, which is not how I remember Lee being at all. It struck me that the tone didn’t feel right for me on this viewing.
Who knows maybe next time I’ll be laughing my head off. Mood doesn’t impact my love of smk lol. but it can sometimes impact my experience of the show sometimes ahhhhh us people are messy aren’t we! but it keeps life interesting at least 😉

I don’t watch episodes unless I’m walking through them – I don’t know if I said that earlier, but I like to be fresh when doing the walk so I wrote this 2nd walk through not having watched the episode in yeeeaaars which is my preference, but I get others can choose to experience the walk differently.

I’ll be curious to hear what you think of where i finish up this episode at with my thoughts on Lee.. 🙂

    2. “That dancing scene where Lee closes his eyes is pretty telling. It’s clear he is feeling VERY comfortable with this housewife. He already trusts Amanda enough to reveal way more than he needs to about that package.”

If I recall correctly, this is their only dance. That makes it so precious!

  5. I thought the toga party was weird, but this black-tie Halloween party is even weirder – in an awesome way! The fact that it takes place during the daytime, in workaholic DC, only adds to its bizarreness. Earlier versions of the script called for it to take place at night, on a yacht, but I like this better! It is just so … completely bizarre. A wonderful way to illustrate how completely alien this world that Lee occupies is, compared to Amanda’s suburban lifestyle. I love the full-head-covering masks – the rabbit is my favorite, followed by the pig.

I guess I’m in the minority here, but I absolutely do not take Celeste’s comment to Amanda about her “marvelous” housewife “costume” as an intentional burn – not at all. I think she was giving Amanda what she believed to be a genuine compliment on what she assumes is a costume. That is what makes it so funny!

More generally – and this is just a respectful disagreement with a lot of the other comments, here and in the past – I don’t find any reason to denigrate the women that Lee sees at this party, or the ones he tends to date in these early episodes, as shallow, or cheap, or any of the other many worse adjectives that get thrown around in the fandom. How can we make judgments like that based on one-sentence interactions or less? They are attractive, confident and flirtatious. They are different than Amanda, but that doesn’t make them lower-quality people. Actually, the ones at this party are probably affiliated with the intelligence business in some way, considering that Lee has told Amanda they are among friends. They might be agents with the CIA, or the Agency. They don’t know Amanda. Maybe in one or more of their minds, Lee is the one who is being a little rude by bringing a “date” to this party even though he had dated one of them earlier in the week or something. We just don’t know. Lee is the one being rude to Amanda by bringing her to black-tie, daytime Halloween party (LOL) with no warning.

    1. Yeah!!! I don’t think I took it as a burn on earlier viewings, but I do now! lol. Next time I might not again. who knows lol.

I like to hear of different view points. thanks for sharing yours so thoughtfully and respectfully!
This is interesting to think about..
I can only speak for myself here as I reply. I don’t think I was denigrating any women, but I was commenting on behaviour I didn’t agree with. Confident, flirty, quite possibly highly accomplished, but to me they were rude. that’s my take on these two women. Which is also what I say about Lee – he’s rude I call him on it. (and here I thought Amanda was finding him rude too – Excuuuuuse me!!!) 😉

I think in 80s tv shows like smk, the story telling does assume we will make quick assumptions about characters that are on screen briefly. That’s TV, and smk loves to be not too subtle with it’s stereotypes!! it plays them up. and sometimes then turns it around. Like Elisa in All that glitters – she turned out to be someone Lee had genuine feelings for..

They may be capable women who are awesome – but I don’t like them behaving that way interrupting Lee and Amanda when it was clear he was already in the middle of a conversation. Wait your turn ladies. lol. I think the story is showing Lee and these women have a different view of relationships at this point in the story than Amanda does, a different life, and that’s kind of the point. (and the point of that little exchange about being among friends that Amanda scoffs at..) Doesn’t mean I judge them.
Lee played the field, and the story of smk overall has some things to say about how that was going for him, and tells a story about a man who moves from superficiality to true intimacy..
So hopefully my displeasure at Lee’s early rudeness won’t be too annoying to read. I’ll try to ensure my language doesn’t come across as judgemental.
      Peace Out! 🙂

  6. I love the pig. He is hilarious, especially when he’s eating, it’s like he’s trying to stuff the food in his mouth.

The women with her unusual walk towards Lee is rude. She walked as if she was sure he was going to come to her. As was Lee also rude as he looked at her, as she left. I do love Amanda’s expression here, it’s priceless. She let him know she was not amused, as she has business to contend with later, and she is only at this party to find out what he had to talk with her about.

As for Celeste, she’s not only rude but also bold as she asks Lee to dance right in front of Amanda. I do like Lee’s comeback, in letting her know he’s with Amanda. Celeste tries to rattle her by telling her she loves her costume as she’s dressed like a housewife, but Amanda played it cool.

I think Lee would have still asked Amanda to dance even if neither one of the women approached him. They both had a connection when they first met. As they’re dancing, and Lee closes his eyes, it’s as if he’s thinking about her, in another way other than business. The same with Amanda, when she looked at him, and asked how he found her, was her way of keeping it business.

As far as Lee is not concerned about Amanda’s safety, I feel as though he believes she brought the package, so it was no need to alarm her of the possibility of danger and due to National Security, she cannot discuss it with anyone. When he says, including her husband, he’s checking if she’s married.

  7. In addition to selling the notion that all of Lee’s “friends” are superficial and wildly out of touch with normal people, I assume this scene is designed to tell us the type of woman that Lee is traditionally attracted to and other than the woman who drags past him, the first person we see is Celeste. It’s an interesting choice because Celeste is built like a linebacker tucked into an evening gown. What are we supposed to glean about Lee from this? Is Lee super gender-fluid? Amanda’s just seen him looking adorable in his Moby Dock outfit, no wonder she’s a little confused.

  8. Looks like Word Press ate my comment. Trying again…

Why does catty Celeste remind me of a man in drag? All that makeup makes her seem so artificial, which contrasts with Amanda’s natural prettiness. I see Celeste as symbolic of most of the women in Lee’s life–shallow, all looks, and only interested in Lee for one reason (which suits him just fine).

And now here’s Amanda who is the complete opposite, She’s also not falling for Lee’s usual moves, which I’m sure is throwing him. That dancing scene where Lee closes his eyes is pretty telling. It’s clear he is feeling VERY comfortable with this housewife. He already trusts Amanda enough to reveal way more than he needs to about that package.

  9. In my opinion, Lee has always been able to get what he wants/needs by flashing that smile and showing his dimples lol! He realizes too late that he can’t win over Amanda that way.

Maybe the encounter with the first woman and the Celeste were to see if Amanda looked jealous. If she did, he could ply her with champagne and his charm.

Lee runs with a chic crowd in the beginning of the series and I think he’s just trying to figure out how to deal with “real” people”. I think he felt a connection to Amanda pretty early on but since he was just not* used to a normal relationship tried keeping her at arms length.

  10. Lee’s such a playboy in the beginning, but he’s so used to women falling at his feet, boy is he in for a wakeup call because Amanda won’t do that, but you also see that he enjoys the attention because he’s used to superficial women, it’s why Amanda confuses him so much in the beginning because she’s not superficial, she’s genuine and he doesn’t know how to handle a woman like that, she has absolutely no agenda, she’s just Amanda and she’s already not impressed by his ways! Come on Lee, you don’t invite a woman to meet you and then flirt with another woman, he’s got a lot to learn! I’ve always loved how Amanda is with Lee here, she’s basically saying ‘you might look good in a tuxedo but man you’re a jerk’ and she’s totally right! The exchange with Celeste just reinforces what is foreshadowing in that Amanda, the housewife would never be Lee’s type and it’s why she laughs and even Lee found it difficult to see Amanda as his type because she’s so different from all the other women that he’s been with,so his previous women never saw Amanda as a threat when actually she was the biggest one and also Lee and the women that he knew looked down on Amanda for being a housewife, like it was something to not be proud of but it just shows that Lee led such a shallow life surrounded by shallow women,we all know Lee’s meaning of the word ‘friends’and he’s got a lot! Lee’s totally turning on the charm with dancing with Amanda because it’s a act,one that he’s carefully constructed over the years, sorry buddy but Amanda isn’t like the others but come on he didn’t have to close his eyes, he was enjoying it, having Amanda in his arms felt nice!Wonder if the reason Lee didn’t try to seduce Amanda because he knew that she was a mother and not even Lee Stetson does that,we all know his feelings about Amanda as a mother!Lee genuinely smiles at Amanda’s comment about him being a gangster because he sees how honest she is and this early on she brings out the real Lee that he hides away and it’s adorable and Lee’s already sharing information that Amanda doesn’t need to know cause his subconscious is already telling him that he can trust her but he’s also in work mode,it doesn’t really make him look good to be putting Amanda and her family in danger but right now he’s the loner and I don’t think he genuinely cares for anyone and that includes himself,he was pretty self destructive in the beginning, he’s so lucky that Amanda came along!
