5/12 Season Two, Episode Eight: Affair at Bromfield Hall-Scarecrow and Mrs King

We see Lee and Amanda walking around to the front of the Hall.. having.. a ridiculous conversation!  ok.. I think most will agree with me.. this scene is worth transcribing! This scene is all about the dialogue.. It’s unusual, in that Lee and Amanda are, for a large part of this scene, moving quickly, and often you cannot see either one of their faces.. so it is all in their movement, their voice and their choice of words!
Amanda (to herself): a sex scandal. [She just can’t believe it!]

Lee:
haa forget it ok. It’s not your fault.
[well at least he admits it I guess]
LOL Lest Amanda think Lee means it’s not your fault you’re gorgeous Winking smile Lee follows this up with: I mean nobody who knows you is going to believe it…

…You? In the middle of a sex scandal?! haa.
[We hear Amanda give a big sigh here.. Oh Lee quit while you are ahead!]
2.08 AFFAIR AT BROMFIELD HALL.avi_001159092 Uh oh, Lee continues: All you have to do is take one look to know it’s ridiculous. [WHA???????]
Throughout, Amanda has her head down.. until.. Lee says this last line – then up it goes! Proud and defiant.. is our wonderful Amanda! Smile

Amanda: Why?!!
[whoa.. doesn’t this remind you of the car scene in Filming Raul.. Amanda says exactly the same thing!! Amanda: My mother thinks I’m involved in some kind of clandestine love affair. Lee: Ha! your mother should know you better than that. Amanda: Why?!!!!! whoo I’ve got to read that post again! tee heee.. oh and hey! Lee is in a turtleneck in that scene too! Only it is a hunky black one, not a chunky white one Winking smile here it is: https://justwalkwithme.com/2012/05/28/56-season-one-episode-18-filming-raul-scarecrow-and-mrs-king/ ]
Lee ( oblivious to the big hole he just dug himself into): Why what?
Amanda: why is it ridiculous.
Lee: ha. Amanda!
2.08 AFFAIR AT BROMFIELD HALL.avi_001165999
Amanda: just because it isn’t true doesn’t make it ridiculous.
[I’m with Amanda on this one.. it was leaning towards being a put down!  although, I think Lee is oblivious to this!]
Lee: Ha.. look why are we having this ridiculous conversation?
Amanda: I think we’re having this ridiculous conversation because you said that it was ridiculous that  I should-

2.08 AFFAIR AT BROMFIELD HALL.avi_001175108Arriving at the car.. Lee cuts Amanda short here..
Lee: –Alright! Alright! [he pauses a second for effect.. Ohh Lee!!] You’re sleeping with Lord Bromfield. How’s that.
2.08 AFFAIR AT BROMFIELD HALL.avi_001178011[I bet they used that line of Lee’s in the commerical for this episode!!! want to bet??!! and isn’t it fabulous that he says she is sleeping with Lord Bromfield.. not you’re having an affair with Lord Bromfield! teee heeee]
Amanda: ha that’s ridiculous!
2.08 AFFAIR AT BROMFIELD HALL.avi_001181114
Lee: that’s right. It’s ridiculous!
[well sure, Amanda’s allowed to say that! Lee isn’t!  ] haa..
Amanda gives up trying to make her point here – IMHO again here we see Amanda  backing down where in Season 1 she would have taken him on. Oh this is funny! I’ve always been so absorbed in Lee and Amanda in this moment here that I never noticed –
2.08 AFFAIR AT BROMFIELD HALL.avi_001179012
there is a big white Zig Zag line at the bottom of the step there for BB to know where to stand!! LOL!!! Maybe it marks where the urn is going to fall or something – but LOL!
Lee continues:  .. Now may I go to work now? Hmm?
Amanda: are you sure you don’t need me to help?
[ I think she just doesn’t want him to leave her there! ]
Lee: yeeeaaaaahhh I am sure I don’t need you. [we all know deep down you do Lee  ] Oh Amanda! Look at this. Take a look around you hmm! [ he randomly decides to walk past the car, and up the stairs.. just so he can show Amanda where she is.. LOL.. and stand under the potential murder weapon!  this moment never looked authentic for me.. he was walking to get in the car and go to London.. ]
2.08 AFFAIR AT BROMFIELD HALL.avi_001188021
Lee continues: this is hardly your usual day in the country right? Stay.  Relax. Make the most of it [I thought he was 2.08 AFFAIR AT BROMFIELD HALL.avi_001197130leaving.. he’s spending a lot of time standing there telling Amanda to stay while he goes.. only he doesn’t go!  At least Lee is being cheerful and not a grump.. ]
Amanda: you’re right. It’s very beautiful and it’s big –
2.08 AFFAIR AT BROMFIELD HALL.avi_001198031Amanda has a look around.. and hears a scraping sound above and she looks up..[ while Lee stands in the one spot, wanting to go.. but err still not going..]
2.08 AFFAIR AT BROMFIELD HALL.avi_001202469Ohhh looky! A giant Urn is falling from the roof right above Lee’s head!
2.08 AFFAIR AT BROMFIELD HALL.avi_001203036 Amanda gives Lee a giant push and saves his gorgeous self.. LOL.. you can see the line on the concrete as Amanda crouches next to the car straight after the urn has crashed.
2.08 AFFAIR AT BROMFIELD HALL.avi_001205939

Ouch Lee.. Amanda saved your life! That’s gotta hurt! [You do need her! Smile]
2.08 AFFAIR AT BROMFIELD HALL.avi_001213046whoooo lots of touching post near death experience though – me like!!!
2.08 AFFAIR AT BROMFIELD HALL.avi_001214047touching his Knee.. his forehead, stroking his hair.. Oh yeess.. this was a fabulous idea this urn from the roof thingy!
Amanda: are you alright?
Lee: Yeah. I’m fine.
Amanda: I’ll get a doctor.
Lee: No Amanda I’m fine.
[Lee moves Amanda’s hand away.. enough fussing! Smile]
2.08 AFFAIR AT BROMFIELD HALL.avi_001215148
Amanda (quietly): If that had hit ya it would have killed ya.
2.08 AFFAIR AT BROMFIELD HALL.avi_001218051
As per usual, Lee is full of overwhelming gratitude towards Amanda for saving his life- Not!
Lee: what the hell is going on here? Looks like I’m not going anywhere.

[OK! It’s time to bring out the big guns – THE TUXEDO!!!]
Brace yourselves.. The Tux is coming!!!!!

I’d love to hear what you all think.. where is Lee at with his thinking of Amanda here? and his reaction to her ‘affair’ ..  I’m stewing on this one at the moment..
Lee’s gone from ‘ You’re not the type’ in Filiming Raul..
to: ‘Nobody who knows you is going to believe it’ and: ‘ All you have to do is take one look to know it’s ridiculous’ – whoa.. take one look? ridiculous? What is he saying about how Amanda looks? Or.. maybe more accurately, how Lee sees Amanda??

Lee is very dismissive.. Hmm.. I’m going to think some more on this one.. but the Tag of OMIT is interesting to consider in this also.. Lee’s reaction to Volkenauer’s asking Amanda on a date.. and his reaction to Amanda’s response.. What a happy topic to consider huh! 😉 I’d love to hear any insights anyone might have..

I don’t remember this episode very well, because I didn’t consider it a favourite and didn’t watch it often.. Maybe this will improve as I continue, but I’m finding Lee’s attitude to be exclusively work focused this episode -so far!- I’m not reading Lee as caring particularly about Amanda’s situation.. and if he is ‘nice’ – it’s a case of yes go sightseeing enjoy London ( get out of my hair), or yes! go to the country it will be good ( get out of my hair)…and  tackling the photographer? ( that came across as Lee being angry he had to go to this thing in the country). Just one line about Amanda or misleading photos would have convinced me Lee was angry because of Amanda’s distress- but.. I’m not feeling it in this episode so far – this is unusual for me – or the show.. whichever you think is to blame ;). Lee wants to be in the city finding the leak (but hey! this is Scarecrow and Mrs King! he should know to follow Amanda and the coincidences and the case will solve itself 😉 ) Am I making sense? Maybe this will improve as I continue..

I shall leave it there for now.. off to buy my smelling salts and locate my drool bucket..the tux is coming!!!… I am shameless.. tee heee.. As always any comments you’d like to make? they would be very welcome! Smile Thanks for reading!

  1. I think on both here and Filming Raul, she assumed (maybe because of their history) that it meant she wasn’t attractive or the kind of person someone would want to have an affair, whereas both times I think Lee honestly meant it because of her moral character. He doesn’t seem dismissive at all the way he says it, but more like he’s honestly complimenting her. I always liked it and kept wishing she’d realize what he was actually saying.

  2. I’ve always thought it was simply his understanding of her moral code that makes the idea of her having an affair ridiculous. I don’t think at this point he was totally oblivious to her charms,,,,I mean how many times has he had to fend off would be suitors at this point
Totally agree these episodes should have aired before BIN

Very glad you found your way here! yeah.. I think Lee is at times an insensitive block head! haaa!

  3. Has anybody ever considered Lee wasn’t insulting Amanda, he is just so darn oblivious to her beauty and sexuality. In his mind, she is just Amanda, his partner, mother, and his friend. She could never be involved in a sex scandal, he doesn’t see her that way……yet! He is overprotective when it comes to other men being attracted to her and I think it is because he considers her,”His Amanda”…..only as his partner in the spy business….he isn’t realising anything romantic. ……yet! Notice how when he calls her for a case, he never stops to think she could he otherwise engaged, he just assumes she ain’t doing anything, she should be ready to go…..he’s oblivious…..am I making any sense at all???? I know what I want to say, it just doesn’t always translate to paper…..I really respect you IWSOD….it’s hard to put thoughts on paper and have them make sense!

    1. Makes perfect sense to me. Lee has compartmentalized everything and everyone It is so entertaining to watch the gates come crashing down when he gets an inkling that Amanda is also a WOMAN (tee hee!). Or maybe he is a little bit narcissistic and immature and hasn’t realized that Amanda exists even when he is not thinking about her.

    2. Yeah, I always did kind of see it this way. I said when I first commented on this post that I didn’t think Lee meant anything by him comments. He didn’t mean to be insulting, he just was. Lee is not blind and I think he is aware that Amanda is attractive. He is attracted to her on some level as I think we see later in the episode. But I always thought Lee looked at amanda as an average suburban housewife with 2 kids. Nothing exciting about that. You see that attitude is very predominant is Service Above and Beyond. It’s like Lee can acknowledge from a purely physical point that sure Amanda is beautiful but he cannot for the life of him understand why a sophisticated wealthy, worldly man would be interested in her. Amanda is not exciting or provocative. You see the same thing in Filming Raul, Lee doesn’t seem to think of Amanda as a passionate woman and it totally takes him by surprise when he finds the heat turns up between them. For the longest time because Lee saw Amanda as someone he was responsible for and someone he had to protect he didn’t see the amazing woman she really was.

      1. I was thinking about this thanks to Gruvy Granny’s comment.. and great to hear your ideas too Misty!
I haven’t looked at what I said about all this in ages – but I wonder if this attitude of Lee’s is partly because he sees Amanda as his friend. Hotness and Friends don’t seem to go together for Lee – I think he puts the women in his life into boxes – oopsie.. Amanda is both friend and gorgeously attractive.. Hmm what to do with that? eek! I think it scares Lee so he just plain denies to himself she’s gorgeous. LOL.. no idea if that’s consistent with what I wrote on this ep. but lately [around Burn Out] we’ve been exploring how Lee compartmentalises women..

      2. Misty if you have a moment, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the order of the first 5 episodes of season 3 over at Nedlindger’s???
        http://nedlindgers.proboards.com/thread/57/episode-order?page=1&scrollTo=979

you don’t have to or anything.. but you seem to have a clear progression in your mind of what’s ahead for you – so I’d be particularly interested to hear your take – though of course, I don’t want to go ahead here at Just Walk With Me with discussion of season 3- thus why it is being discussed at Nedlindger’s forum 🙂

Or anyone else like to add their thoughts over at Ned’s??? I’d love to hear from you about it – got to make a decision about what order to blog the episodes in.. and I don’t want to watch them yet!
Any input much appreciated!! byeee signing off now!!

  4. Okay, I just can’t take this anymore. I defended Lee that last two episodes when some thought his behavior was inexcusable, but now I just have to say jerk, jerk, jerk! First seemingly more annoyed for himself that Amanda is caught up in sex scandal, then making fun of it, not getting the gravity of it to her. Now he’s abandoning her and telling her one look at her and no one would believe she could be part of sex scandal. Why because she doesn’t look the part. She doesn’t look like a spy either. I really don’t think he meant anything by it, I think he was actually trying to reassure her but as a woman I can see how it sounded insulting. Like she is not sexy enough to be part of sex scandal. Reminds me of his attitude in Service above and beyond. Lee recognizes Amanda is beautiful but hers is a simple subtle beauty(which can be refreshing) it’s not the kind of classic obvious beauty that Lee sees worldly refined men going for. Good ole trustworthy, dependable Amanda just isn’t exciting enough. Oh, puke. Part of the reason why Lee never saw Amanda as being his type for so long. Sure gets jealous enough, though, when other men see her as their type, doesn’t he. She’s exciting enough to save his life, and he still doesn’t seem to really appreciate her in this episode. Just totally for granted at this point. Somebody slap him now.

    1. whahahaa!! I’ve been enjoying reading your thoughts as you go through Misty.

I think the majority, if not all, smk fans feel very loyal to Lee.. and love his character – but he is no angel!!! and starts off at times treating Amanda in ways that are not okay!
For me, when Lee treats Amanda poorly – there are reasons why he does so.. and I still love his character and am pretty much always on his side 🙂 at the same time- I don’t give Lee any free passes – he may have reasons, I may love his character, but it’s still not okay…. I think it is a credit to the show that we can love Lee’s character, want to cheer him on in his journey – to know better and do better – but at the same time – See he is sometimes out of line!! It’s all part of his journey isn’t it..

Amanda is flipping gorgeous.. and I think others can see that too – other people think it’s true she is in a sex scandal when they look at her – the difference with Lee is that he knows her – and he is fighting his own growing feelings for her.. so this makes it impossible for him to grasp how people could see her as being in sex scandal 🙂
man.. it’s been ages since I went back to read what I said about this episode.. but these are my thoughts on it now.. I find it fascinating that Lee is not able to just look at the surface of Amanda and see yep – she’s attractive she could be mistaken for being in a sex scandal – I think that is a bit telling no?? that there is something complex going on for Lee between him and Amanda that he just can’t see that!! 🙂

  5. For me, Lee’s “ridiculous” comment shows again how he has idealized her. When he looks at Amanda, he sees a classy, beautiful woman. He’s also very drawn to the maternal aura around Amanda – the kind of nurturing, warm female presence he didn’t have in his life growing up.

In short, I think Lee believes he was giving Amanda a compliment, demonstrating how much he respects her (she’s no tramp, she’s a real LADY!), when he said it was ridiculous for anyone to think she might have an affair. It doesn’t occur to him that she might interpret it as him thinking she isn’t sexy enough to attract a lover.

As for Amanda being less “spunky” than in season 1, I think it’s because she has come to know Lee, and understands that arguing with him will only make him dig in his heels. She’s discovered there’s a better way to handle him and she’s become pretty skilled in getting him to see things her way eventually. Also, I think she now knows that Lee is at heart a good and honorable man. He has his faults, but even when he’s being stubborn and infuriating, it comes from a place of caring and feeling a deep responsibility toward her and others. And most of all, she’s in love with him (or getting there quickly), and we tend to overlook, minimize and tolerate things from people we’re infatuated with.

  6. Lee considering you’ve known a lot of women you really know nothing about them. I can sort of understand knowing how rigid she can be about her principles she’s least likely to have an affair but even so…..women don’t like to be thought of as complete sexless beings. Look at the horrendously frumpy Gwyn having an affair and here is Amanda, smart, sassy and looking pretty damn stylish in this episode and yet she can’t be considered as being capable of having an affair.
I confess I assumed Lee starts walking up the stairs to walk round to the car as its right hand side drive 😉
Ah Amanda is quite solicitous in her concern for Lee 😉

  7. Lee is being very dismissive here and it is so frustrating. I am sure Amanda feels it too. Just totally ridiculous. I definitely agree this episode should go before “Brunettes are In”.
That’s enough for now. . .I have a destiny with a tux (but I’ll share)

    1. hiya Jeanine, yeah I could never put my finger on why this episode bugged me.. I think this may be the answer – Lee’s dismissiveness after Brunettes are in was just too frustrating for me.. I was done with that attitude of his and wanted it gone! 🙂

Now, going through this episode, thinking it is before Brunettes are in? has made it much more palatable.. enjoyable even! 😉 and there is lots of foreshadowing of events to come in Brunetttes in this episode IMHO!

Anyway … yes, I am soo reminded of “Filming Raul” here. Amanda stands her ground, and Lee doesn’t listen. He hears, but he’s not really listening.

I always felt he stepped up on the steps to do the whole “panorama” thing with his arms. As if he were saying, “Look at all this! Isn’t it great?”
