2/12 Season Two, Episode 9: A Class Act-Scarecrow and Mrs King

So.. Lee is cursing Billy for sending him to station 1 with- and there’s  a quick edit to Dotty calling out ‘Amanda!Winking smile very cute!!
In Amanda’s home, Amanda is wearing an arm sling which Jamie is trying to tie a knot in, while Phillip times him with a stop watch..
Phillip: 5 seconds left!
Amanda
calmly: don’t panic Jamie. don’t panic. take it easy.

Hooray! Jamie gets the knot done right on the dot! First aid badge? here he comes!!

These little moments dispersed throughout SMK are lovely aren’t they? I mean did we need to see Phillip try to stick his finger in the peanut butter?? only to have Amanda stop him and tell him to wait for his lunch? A lovely taste of normal life – amongst field reports, field manuals, section one and all that stuff! The doorbell rings.. Jamie goes to answer it but Amanda stops him ( wow.. imagine if he had!) – LOL as Amanda leaves, Phillip goes back to the peanut butter for another go.. my goodness.. someone discipline that kid!

A postman is waiting at Amanda’s front door..We see Amanda open her front door..
Ta da! Postman Lee, chimes: Hello!
Amanda goes to grab the mail!: Oh thank-
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000239739
tee hee and she realises who it is! She panics and closes the front door behind them..
Amanda: Oh my gosh, I don’t know what you’re doing by- you can’t stand here mother will see you. [LOL I love how she pushes Lee around! ]
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000245745
Lee: what happened to your arm!
Amanda: Oh nothing, I loaned it to Jamie
[too cute!] for his merit badge.
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000249749
Lee: don’t worry about your mother she’ll just think that I’m delivering the mail.
Amanda: she knows the mailman!
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000253753
Lee: Oh!
[How cute is he in that uniform? with the crooked badge on this cap?! tee heee.. adorable!]
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000254754
[ Love this!!! A little nod to how Lee doesn’t know how the suburbs work and is from a very different world! Hmm maybe Lee does need that training to maintain his cover after all! Do they teach suburb etiquette at Station 1? I also love that they are revisiting the old idea of Lee popping up here there and everywhere in Amanda’s life in disguise Smile]
Lee: Oh, ( looking down) we have a visitorrrrr!!!!
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_0002577572.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000258758
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000259759Amanda looks up, and waves to her neighbour: Ohh hello Mrs Ducain! [ LOL the script has her called Mrs Froehlich – a nod to one of the producers.. guess they canned that idea! ] Both Lee and Amanda smile at the neighbour.
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000262762
Mrs Ducain: Oh! did you hurt your arm?
Amanda waves it around: Oh no no it’s just fine, I loaned it to Jamie!
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000266766
They say byeee to Mrs Ducain.. love the huge smile Lee gives her when she finally begins to leave!
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000272772
Finally Lee can get on with his oh soooo special delivery!
Amanda: how did you get my mail?
Lee: we have our ways. You know that.

2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000275775
[ Haa! love this little nod to the first time.. we have our ways!!! and I love that he adds she knows it! yes she does!! she knows alot more now than she did back at that halloween party! This episode seems to be offering a few throw backs to previous themes- I like it! Smile ]
Lee: try opening the blue one.
Isn’t Amanda too cute how she gasps?? and is all excited it’s from IFF! tee hee..
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000279779
Man I wish I could see Lee’s face in close up there.. Too Funny! Amanda’s only got one arm, and is all excited so she whips open the letter!
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_0002830162.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000283817
Almost whacking Lee in the face and giving him a start! Lee doesn’t know what to do! He seems to look away into the distance.. unsure of how to respond – as he doesn’t really share here enthusiasm about this!
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_0002843512.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000284484
She’s all excited.. and.. well.. he .. isn’t! [It’s a bit sad Amanda doesn’t have anyone to share her joy with in this moment.. she can’t even tell her family that what she had hoped for has finally happened!]
Amanda: Ohhhh!!!! it’s an invitation to training !! They finally listened to me after all those requests.
Lee
wryly: ten
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000290790
Amanda: Ohhhh!! Yes, and now I’m finally going!
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_0002927922.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000294794
Oh Lee!! Thank you. This is really very nice of you!
Lee: wha ahhh this was Billy’s idea not mine.
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_0002957952.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000296796

2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000298798  Amanda: It was a good one.
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000300800
[I think well done Amanda!! she persevered and got herself heard under her own steam – Lee didn’t help her at all.. she did it all by herself! Only.. she doesn’t realises this is all her own doing.. Interesting she first assumes Lee helped.. Noooooooo! so optimistic Amanda! Hope you are shamed Lee Stetson! [At least he isn’t openly conveying his displeasure at this whole idea to Amanda.. he manages to show some understanding! ] Don’t you love Amanda’s response about Billy’s idea- and it being a good one? Yeah Lee.. and not supporting it= bad one! Well done Amanda! she can be very tenacious when she wants something!! and we see here how much effort Amanda has been putting in and without support from Lee! she has been wanting this! ]
Lee: yeah. [ sorta.. not really.. ]
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000301801
Amanda: will you be there?
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_0003048042.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000306806
Lee: I will be a ringer. Posing as a trainee and keeping an eye on things from the inside. Now look, class starts the day after tomorrow…. Are you sure you’re going to be able to get away from home?
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_0003118112.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000313813
[ such short notice! hopefully Amanda can’t do it!]
Amanda: Look. I’ll find a way!
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000315815
[ don’t you worry?! eerr he’s more worried you will find a way Amanda!]
Lee: oh. great.
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000316816
[not! but he gives a wry smile at her enthusiasm. Yes Lee it’s happening, come to terms with it Lee!!! 🙂 ] 2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000317817

Lee seems to realise he can go now.. oh yeah!.. so why is he still standing here talking to her? tee hee..
Amanda wonders where is the training and Lee says at Station 1 – err with no other directions!
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000326826
Yep, he really wants you to get there Amanda! Rofl! Nothing is going to stop Amanda now she’s getting her training! whooo hoooo!!!

Anyone read the script for this episode? it’s on Petra’s website.. LOL it has this scene playing very differently.. let’s just say – there’s no first aid.. no arm in a sling.. and a rather revealing flirty top Amanda is trying on when she answer the door to Postman Lee! Winking smile Oh la laaaa..

I’ll finish up there for now.. As always – I would love to hear from you! Thoughts? comments? insights? questions? gripes? share away! Thanks for reading, byeeee!

  1. That’s true, Jestress, that Lee immediately looked at Amanda’s ‘injured’ arm, but I didn’t perceive in Lee’s words his anger/concern for Amanda, though. Funnily enough ;), Lee’s voice towards Amanda sounds nice to me. At the same time, I also think that, before asking Amanda about her arm, he tought at least for a split second: “Oh, that’s a pity! She can’t come to Station1!” But then, off course, our thoughts are not always translated and conveyed automatically through the right words.

Today,at the gym, for example, a similar episode occured to me that made me think about Lee’s reactions. I don’t like pilates but I need it for my back. When I arrived at the gym, there was only one trainee except me (I didn’t know that our teacher had told her before my arrival that, if she had been alone for the lesson, she would have cancelled it). Once the other trainee saw me, she asked me: “So… will we have the lesson tonight?” It’s then that I realised that for a split second I rejoiced inside of me at the idea that the lesson would be cancelled but, when I answered her a second later, I said optimistically and almost annoyed: “Why not! Now that there are two of us, we can take it I suppose!” I’m sure it seemed to her that I Iiked and like pilates (which is not true)! In other words, I conveyed to her a different state of my mind, quite the opposite.

Back to SMK and to the postman scene, then, I thought that Lee was a little sad when saw Amanda’s arm, but, when he spoke, he was only able to ask: “What happened to your arm?” And I like to think that when he heard that Amanda wasn’t really injured, he rejoiced as well deep down inside of him ;), without off course revealing that to Amanda .

As I said in part1, I think, indeed, that Lee is in denial about his feelings towards Amanda (joy/love/concern), so when Amanda expresses her emotions (“Oh Lee. Thank you. This is really very nice of you”), his first reaction is that of getting embarrassed, then of struggling to suppress his feelings – inside and outside his body –conveyed by his verbal and non verbal languge (hesitations, red face, no eye contact) and replacing them with opposite emotions.

That’s why, few seconds later, Lee feels uncomfortable when Amanda says she would not have problems to find an excuse for her mother to go out (to Station1). He can’t manage his feelings and up to that moment that’s asking too much for him ;)!

That reaction of his will happen several times in this episode but I’ll talk about them when I comment on other scenes/parts –I read the rules of this blog ;)!

I also agree with you, raffie5, when you say that in this episode – as well as in many episodes in SMK – “there is a main theme with its sub-themes” or sub-plots. Apart from those you mentioned (“Amanda is about to get trained and Jamie is working on his first aid training”), there is also the sub-plot of Amanda’s training Lee to unlock his emotions (not only through this episode but since the very first episode). I think indeed that if Amanda had wanted to go to Station1 in the first episode of the first season, Lee would have shouted at her: “Oh please! That’s not for you!” He would have been even ruder to her! As he was in the parking garage in the “First time”. This is because, before meeting Amanda, he hadn’t learnt gentle ways of talking to people (except for to his dates) in stressful/emotional situations.

Lee is learning little by little how to talk to Amanda thanks to Amanda. And in this episode he is trying to do his best not to offend Amanda, even if he is still at the beginner – pre- intermediate level ;).

There is another parallel sub-plot in this episode I think, namely the mirror disguise. Lee pretends to be the postman, while Amanda, an injured woman; Lee and Peggy pretend to be trainees; Francine, dressed in black, pretends to be a baddie; one of the baddies pretends to be a policeman.

Finally, there are also interesting mirror lines and names in this scene (and in the episode). For example, Lee says at the beginning of the postman scene, “We have our ways”, as we know, but Amanda will say, at the end of that scene, that she has her “ways” too (to find even that time an excuse for her mother to go and work for IFF). They both have their ways then! ;). At the beginning of the scene, then, Lee asks Amanda: “What happened to your arm?” as if he wanted to ask “Are you not coming to Station1?”, while at the end of that scene it’s Amanda who asks him: “Will you be there?”.

Apart from people in disguise, we can also find misleading names: “Dowtowner Motor Inn” and “Station1”. They both remind of crowded places, but they are not off course. The baddies couldn’t hide in downtown (at least, according to me) far from Station1, and Station1 is not in downtown too. Furthermore, “Station1” is neither a ‘train’ station nor a ‘fire’ station (nor is it a ‘radio’ station).

I read in your comments, Iwsod, that you noticed the Dowtowner name too but you didn’t say why you found it strange :). Maybe for the same reason?

    1. HI Pallina, so many disguises! Maybe the ultimate disguise is that Amanda is going to be a brilliant spy! 🙂

Gosh, I thought Downtowner hotel was strange? what did I say? sorry you’ll have to remind me – I love to revisit older eps but because it’s been years it’s pretty hazy and vague and I”d have to go back and read all the ep to get across it again 😦 still it’s well worth commenting on earlier eps because we never know when someone else might be reading through an ep (just as you are now!).

I wonder Pallina, why did you choose to jump in while reading a class act? is it because it’s a particular favourite?
I hope you can join us also where the walk is currently at (DMLNT).. or will you be taking your time and going through at your own pace?
Whatever and however you choose to enjoy SMK you are very welcome! byeee!

  2. I was watching this episode again this evening, and I just wanted to say that I like the way Lee immediately zeroes in on Amanda’s bandages when she opens the door and how the first thing he wants to know is how she got hurt. He sounds almost angry when he demands to know what happened to Amanda’s arm, almost like an adult who is worried and upset about a child getting hurt and is about to chide her for not taking better care of herself. Not that Amanda is a child, but I think Lee feels that same level of responsibility for her well-being. If Amanda had really been hurt, she wouldn’t have been able to go to Station One, but Lee forgets all about Station One until he finds out that Amanda is alright.

  3. You get timed doing merit badges?! Wow that’s pressure LOL I am surprised Philip didn’t offer to be bleeding to death or something nice and gruesome like all boys like 😉
You raise a good point about these little slices of family life. It kinda shows to me Amanda’s motivation for doing what she does but also how behind our little bubbles of domestic lives are people working to ensure our safety. Sad fact is that this is still just as relevant today 😦

Anyway Lee as a postman. Nice in a uniform as always 😉
If Lee was so against Amanda going why is he the one delivering the letter telling her she is going? After all they could have given her that letter at work etc. is this Billy having the last laugh?
So what if Dotty knows the postman? Isn’t he allowed to take a holiday poor man 😉

Well done to Amanda on her persistence and tenacity. It paid off and she got the training she wanted 🙂 good for her 🙂

  4. Iwsod, I agree with you that SMK love to throw in little moments like the first aid scene and the finger in the peanut butter that make “bring things home” literally and figuratively. Also, either here or on yuku, we were talking about how SMK supports the main theme with its sub-themes and this is a great example: Amanda is about to get trained, and here Jamie is working on his first aid training.

I get a kick how when Amanda tells Lee she lent her arm to Jamie, Lee doesn’t give his classic “hunh?” reaction? He’s becoming quite accustomed to these Amanda-isms and either understands what she means or else has decided he doesn’t want to go there!

I always felt Lee was looking into the distance as Amanda opened her letter because he’s in agent mode. Here she is making quite a to-do about secret agency business in the middle of the front yard of a suburban neighborhood. Nosy neighbors abound!

I heard about the original script and was glad they changed it. I always wonder who the primary instigator of such changes is: writers, director, actors, or a mixed bag?

Some of those postman screencaps remind me that we are approaching the time where they start making Lee up like a 13-year old girl. Not so bad yet but it still jumped out at me. We know it’ll get worse before it gets better 🙂 Lee still looks gorgeous. I agree with Amanda in Double Agent .. beautiful, beautiful, beautiful eyes!

    1. Good morning! ( well it’s morning here!) I agree Julia.. so far this episdoe is quite enjoyable! I am enjoying it too.. We’ll see how we go – I’m trying not to focus on the teeth grinding moments that lay ahead.. as there are some great moments too! 🙂

Cindy and Melissa, I haven’t gotten that far into the script – whoooo I like the sounds of that!!! 🙂 I would have loved to have seen that in any episode!!!

  5. I’ve read the script…and I wish they had left the part in where Amanda ties Lee up as part of the training and he can’t get untied. He asks how she learned that and she replies, “the Jr. Trailblazers”!
