3/12 Season Two, Episode 9: A Class Act-Scarecrow and Mrs King

On with the show! It’s time to meet the baddies of the week! As usual their headquarters are in a very dodgy looking hotel ‘the downtowner’ great name for a baddie hotel!

We see two male baddies, with a fancy suitcase full of high tech, complicated equipment – whooo they mean business!
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000344844
One baddie says the risks are great… but the other baddie, Vardosk, is up for some sport! Seems these baddies have infiltrated the American training facility (and Amanda is finally going to training?? what are the odds?!! Winking smile ) The agent on the inside is called Pavolovich ( Mmmm yummy.. a Pavlova witch.. she lacks substance! Winking smile ). How will Pavlovich pull of the ‘assassination’?

Vardosk: we know that a top agent poses as a trainee in each class. A ringer. Find the ringer and terminate him
1baddie speaks–Gee, Finger the ringer and give him a zinger!!! Winking smile

2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000349849

You’ve got to laugh at this logic-  they say they must find the ringer and terminate him – but why? they don’t know who the ringer is, if they were wanting to kill an agent why not just kill Billy? or Francine? They are definitely agents!  I don’t get it!! It isn’t even like only top agents go to section 1.. when Miss field manual quotes the rule she states all agents, not just the ‘top ones’ have to pose as ringers-  so it can’t be that they are only “targeting top agents”. It’s never a good sign when the whole logic behind an episode is hopeless Winking smile but still.. I’ll go with it.. Amanda being mistaken for a top agent?1ha haaaa yes I want to see that ( again! tee hee.. loved saved by the bells! ) !

Ahhh smk.. nobody does it better..
makes me feel sad for the rest..
nobody does baddies half as cheesy as you..
smk writers you’re the best! Winking smile
[channel the James Bond song by Carly Simon.. and you’ll get what I mean! Winking smile oh dear.. this could be an episode that sends me over the edge!!! tee hee]

2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000351851Anyway, after last week and the turtleneck love/hate thing we all had going on – it’s funny to see one of the baddies is wearing a turtleneck! The script say his name is Gregorian ( let me guess, last name ‘ chant’?)  Winking smile So funny! because I recognise this actor played a lounge singer in an episode of Colombo! Winking smile
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000363863Vardosk puts on his headphones (why we don’t yet know) and we move on to station one! [I keep going to call it section one! What is that- Alias??!!]

We find a bunch of recruits jogging.. love the outfits! matchy matchy!1laugh till cry
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000373873
[If you want to be an agent, you’ve got to look good and catch the bad guys! Winking smile ] Oh wait.. or is this an episode of ‘I’m a celebrity get me out of here!!!’ that I have put on by mistake?1redface Ohhh no no it’s ok.. there’s Billy!

LOL! check out the outdoor classroom they’ve assembled! Hilarious! Love the spy lattice work..  but where’s the blackboard where Billy writes in large capitals ‘ TRAINING’?!
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000380880

Check out this class! fifteen hopefuls (and Lee!).. So Billy gives them all a pep talk! ‘ The process of becoming an agent is a long and difficult one!’ not as long and difficult to listen to as this speech..  it’s part of the program- if they can survive Billy’s speech they can survive station one! [Billy is awfully optimistic about their chances-not!]
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000385885

2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000394894Billy: Station one is the first part of training, and it will include physical exercises, psychological 2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000397897testing, and our dodge city manoeuvres. The truth is, most of you will not pass this initial phase. [I’d like to see Billy pass the physical exercises Winking smile ]
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000392892Amanda raises her hand with a question.. whooo good one Billy! He looks down at his notes to find out her name: Err yes.. Mrs King?

Amanda: Sir! What happens if we do pass station one?
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000405905
Billy: those of you who pass the preliminary screening
here will go on to more advanced training at another facility.

[That must be the facility where they teach female agents how to morph into men with reeeally bad wigs when they are required to fight a baddie! Winking smile]
Amanda with a big smile: thank you sir.

We see Lee watching Amanda here, Aie! She is super keen isn’t she?! I wish we had more insight into what’s going on with him in this episode, maybe there is and I forget! I don’t remember the detail of this epiosde well – it feels quite fresh which I prefer!!

It’s interesting.. this time around I can see that well.. maybe Lee is right, Amanda isn’t ready to be an agent. Where Lee is wrong is that he thinks she’ll never be ready! I think maybe (??) later we learn more about how tough it is to become an agent in this episode?..but I’ll get back to that! [I wonder if I hadn’t seen season 4 when I first saw this ep.. because the season 4, maybe even season 3 Amanda was ready!!! What do you all think?] I’ll continue on..

2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000416916Billy: You should know, that planted among you is an agent posing as a raw recruit. This person we call the 2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000424924ringer. He or she is here to observe or grade you. [whoa.. Lee gets to grade Amanda? I wonder if he would allow himself to give her top marks?? how would his pre-existing relationship influence the grade he gives?? guesses anyone?? ideas? I just hope Francine isn’t grading!!!]

Time for a walking tour of Station one! LOL.. The tour is interrupted by a sneak attack on Amanda.. at gun point! It actually looks kind of creepy seeing this frame of the attacker laying in wait!
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000455755
Can you imagine if it had been Lee who was grabbed? that prior training probably would have shown Winking smile Is it just me or is it hilarious that this balaclava wearing stalker has bright red lippie and dark eye makeup? 1HaHaHa whahahaa!!! Poor Amanda, she’s is scared out of her wits! but ROFL!!! I find this moment hilarious –
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_0004562892.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000456423

1HaHaHaFrancine needs to watch where she puts her hands! 1Emoticon cheekywink
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_0004565562.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000457490

It’s especially funny when viewing Amanda’s expression frame by frame! Poor Amanda! KJ has the best expressions!!!! 😆 Hey do you think KJ knew the moment this would happen?? or that they sprung this on her?? she might have known it would happen, but where or when maybe not? She doesn’t seem to show any sign of knowing what’s coming- which isn’t easy! well done KJ!!! If you are reading: (I am an optimist!) please let us know if you knew this was about to happen!!!! Do you think KJ knew? Smile

2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_0004586922.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000458958

Amanda deserves some extra grades for enduring this torture err I mean lesson!
Before the surprise attacker is even unmasked, you can see Billy smirking at Francine’s antics!..
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000459359
and Lee’s look turns into a glare when he looks at Francine- he has guessed it’s her twisted sense of humour at play here 1BIG GRIN
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000459626
Did you guess it was Francine? man.. I wish I could remember the first time I saw this episode! This time, I remembered it was her.. but I forgot this was coming! Smile
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000470970Francine: Alright. This should serve as a lesson for each and every one of you, in order to survive this business, one must always expect the unexpected![and make sure you have earrings to match the unexpected! Winking smilePoor Amanda! It looks like Francine has a little payback here, she is having a great time! She just happens to make an example of Amanda by surprising her with a fake attack “If this was a real assault Mrs King, you would be dead right now.
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_0004769762.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000477977
(So funny how Francine says this with glee!!) – cha! fashion police badge and warningYou wish Francine!!! Whoa! Francine has matching black jumpsuit- and earrings!!! matchy matchy! Smile now that is a dedicated professional! Winking smile rofl!! I am finding this a lot funnier than I have in the past! Is this growing on anyone else? whooo and I love that 2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000471971Francine’s hair is all messy from the mask- it would have been just perfect if Francine had smudged her lipstick taking off the mask too and not realised it Winking smile – I’m soo nasty! teee heeee…

2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000478978Ohh Amanda, she’s such a trooper.. she jokes it off and moves on.. she isn’t going to let it distract her from her 2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000483316goal! (It’s kinda cute how Amanda touches Billy’s arm as they move on and he reassures her.. awh!! the one person at  the moment who supports her in her work!! Bless Billy!!)

2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000484250Interesting, as they all move on: Lee gives Francine a ‘ha haa very funny not really’ kind of look.. and anyone looking at these four ( two of which they know are agents) would see that they already know each other well! If I were trying to find the ringer, I would already have it nailed down to either Lee or Amanda!

Back to the downtowner motor inn Winking smile and Vardosk is talking into his suitcase..1laugh till cry apparently it’s a radio for 2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000489989communicating with the secret Pavlova.. duh duh duuhhhhhh! It’s only a matter of time before the ringer, the top agent, is identified! muahahaahaaa!!
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000520020Gregorian: If one of them appears to be more proficient than the others… prior training always shows. [uh oh.. what about Jnr trailblazers training? does that count? Winking smile ]
2.09 A CLASS ACT.avi_000536036Vardosk: With a top agent you won’t know. I conceived the idea of an elite squad whose sole purpose it is to terminate the top western agents. Let me tell you, that our target will not be obvious.

You know what’s really funny? If you ask me.. Lee is very obviously an agent! There is nothing about him that baddies would underestimate, he would not go unnoticed – he is all machismo and attitude with a temper and left hook to match! Winking smile this irony  is deliciously  funny to me!!!1rofl

Oh and- Yep, the baddie says the plan is to kill the top western agents.. this doesn’t make any sense.. Are all agents considered the best of the best?  I’ll just go with it.. ugh!!!

Ok, I shall pause there for now – thanks for reading! Hope you are enjoying this episode! So far I am pleasantly suprised! Smile Please share your thoughts with us all byeeee!!

  1. I do find it amusing that Lee is so familiar with Amanda and Francine you would have to be an idiot not to realise he’s the ringer…..oh wait…..this is SMK!
I kinda like the track suits LOL but that might just be my dodgy taste in clothes 😉 whenever I see people running in groups I tend to expect them to be doing those army style chants we see in the movies LOL
Naughty Francine looking to get one over on Amanda. I never noticed her matchy matchy earrings! It makes me laugh when she says expect the unexpected……really Francine…..you didn’t see Mrs
Welch coming now did ya?! 😉
Is Amanda ready to be an agent? I guess that depends on what type of agent you’re expecting. The way I see Lee and Amanda’s partnership, she’s the brains and he’s the brawn 😉 she will never be someone like Francine and be able to do hand to hand combat so that isn’t her forte. But her eye for detail and her ability to wheedle information out of anyone……well she puts the intelligence in the intelligence operative 😀 In my opinion she is really to be the latter type of agent.

    • I agree Jenbo.. Amanda would be a fab agent!!! well.. she does become a fab agent.. though rather altered!

When I posed that question- I was asking based on what IFF was saying it was looking for.. I think I said something about this discounting of everyone being a bit silly because look at billy? look at Emily? but worst of all.. IMHO in this episode they took away from Amanda’s character all the things that make her a great partner for Lee.. the intellect.. the great memory.. ugh.. There is lots to like in this ep and I did love the dodge city finale..but I will let you keep reading – I see you are only up to part 3.. oh boy.. I had a few things to say about this ep! I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

LOL yes I like to think the whole Mrs Welch thing gave Francine a huge chip (and shoulder pad) on her shoulder when it comes to Amanda!!! 🙂
Byeee now! Loving hearing people’s thoughts on the earlier eps!!!

  2. What’s with the men wearing the stripey blue and grey sweatshirts and the women all-grey ones–in a lighter grey that doesn’t match the hoodies? Do they seriously need to differentiate the sexes? Is this the first class with the women’s uniforms and they had to rush out and get plain ones?
    ‘S’OK… it’s amusing.

  4. I know that this episode doesn’t treat Amanda well, but the comedic bits and cute moments are so well done that I’m afraid it has become a favorite. Billy, as usual, sees her potential; Francine is out to show she’s not agency material; and Lee can’t decide what he thinks. Yep, this is just too fun.

    • hiya Cindy!! How is your computer going?? Bad computer!!

Hi Raffie! Yes!!! Love those smk baddies 😉 haa so true.. Yeah good point. this is a great opportunity for Francine – poor amanda!! but.. Francine is quite funny in this episode – at least so far! 🙂

I am wondering about this being an agent thing and what it takes.. but.. I might hold off discussing that one till the end- as there is discussion between the characters about this in the tag – I am finding this very interesting! Yeah, Lee is being quite attentive to Amanda in this episode.. it’s lovely!! ( once you get past his hissy fit in the opening he is sweet!)

Great observation regarding the title Raffie. I hadn’t even really thought about it – so true!!! There are lots of ‘acts’ going on in this episode isn’t there.. and it even applies to the baddies ( smk likes the title to apply to the baddies too I think sometimes.. ) the agent Pavlova is also acting as a recruit, in addition to Lee.. Lee does an act as a postman! 😉 tee hee.. and we get later on the baddie, Gregorian acting as a policeman! Oh and.. we have some moments of Amanda acting the fool ( grr) tee hee! I agree Raffie, Amanda is A Class Act in all episodes, when it comes to her dealings with Francine! 🙂
Thanks for bringing that up Raffie!! Fascinating!

Hi Debilyn! I am not surprised now that you would rate this a favourite. This time around, I am finding this to be a really fun episode!!! [hoping to skim over the annoying bits!] but there is some really charming moments in this one! I am pleasantly surprised!

This idea of whether Amanda is spy material is an interesting one.. as I just mentioned to Raffie, I’ll try to come back to that at the end of the episode ( and i’d love to hear your take on it!!)
but.. at this point of the episode, I am thinking Billy is giving her a chance,
Francine thinks she has no chance.
and Lee is thinking she has no chance.
I am thinking this agent lark is a bit more complicated and difficult to obtain than I had first thought.
Billy’s comments in his intro allude to this..

I am wondering if to be an agent: you are already the best of the best. There are no junior agents.. ?? [Except Fred Fielder but I wondered if he got fired at the end of Savior!]
I hadn’t really tried to figure this one out before.. so I am enjoying this new idea to ponder!

I will hold off till the end of the episode to completely form a view on this – but at the moment, Surprisingly, I am thinking maybe Amanda isn’t cut out to be an agent – not at this point!
[I see this episode as before Brunettes..and her crucial growth in that ep]
but that doesn’t mean she isn’t very useful 🙂
      does that make sense?
Anyone have any thoughts on this they’d like to share? 🙂
byeee!! Loving hearing from you all!!!

      • Hi Dana,
New computer is scheduled for delivery on Thursday. Cannot wait! Here’s hpoing this one lasts a little longer.

I never thought about the meaning of the episode title before beyond the obvious of this being training. I am also trying to look at this episode with forgiving eyes. Perhaps this episode was to illustrate that Amanda was not ready to be a full agent yet. Of course the tag is pretty brutal……

        • Amanda does have a bit of the rose-colored glasses outlook that might be hard to sustain once you are an agent. I think this is what Lee doesn’t want her to lose, and what Billy thinks she can handle. Billy continues to encourage her and support her, despite the situations and problems that arise. He has faith she can still look at the world with optimism even after becoming an agent. (He does this a bit himself, I think.) Lee and Francine find it hard to do this, I think. (And, despite herself, Francine wishes she had a bit of that.)

  5. I love the goofy SMK baddies a la SBTBells, but you are right, Dana, that they are truly pathetic here. Amanda is not the only thing they’ve dumbed down in this episode 🙂

I always thought of Francine as wanting to take this opportunity to one-up Amanda and put her in her place, but your commentary sorta brought it home for me that this is Francine’s chance to go even further … to show Amanda up as incompetent and unfit to be an agency, as Francine has claimed all along. Interesting and sweet that Lee, who did not want Amanda at training, hassles Francine for her treatment of Amanda.

I like the double or even triple entendre in the name of this episode. Here we have Amanda attending class, we have Lee ‘acting’ as ‘class’ ringer, and we have Amanda handling the situation with Francine (and we know there are more to come) with her usual ‘class’.

  6. All I can say is thank goodness the baddies do not have logical minds. Even when I watched this episode the first time, oh so many years ago, the plot holes were pretty obvious.

  7. My preferred moments are still to come, I am pleased to hear you are pleasantly surprised so far.

I agree the baddies are not really thought through, but if this would be important to me, I would not like the show as much as I do 😉
