2/11 Season Two, Episode 11:Three Faces of Emily-Scarecrow and Mrs King

Hello! So Lee has helped himself to coffee and Amanda’s house.. now it’s time for him to explain just what he is doing there. I find this little exchange quite confusing- though at the same time.. enjoyable for obvious reasons Winking smile
Amanda: how about the morning paper??!!
Lee: Nah, no.

….Margo???   She’s the current one you’re seeing..
[Great point Amanda!!!! It is too cute and funny how KJ delivers this cheeky little enquiry of Amanda’s!!! Not to mention the little dashound with the paper hat is adorable Winking smile I wonder which member of the crew owned him or her!]
Lee quietly
: Margo and I aren’t seeing each other anymore.
[Lee chuckles this off..]

…She took off with an airline pilot ok?
1HaHaHa

Ouchy!! Lee can’t laugh off this one! For a tough guy.. he’s sensitive huh! Winking smile  I think Amanda didn’t see this coming- I think she thought he wouldn’t care about the break up since they happen all the time.. or her comment.. but she was wrong – and she seems immediately repentant and reassuring of Lee..
At the same time: This pun is fabulous!!! and I completely missed it until a fellow smk fan pointed it out!! I was so confused at what was going on I didn’t notice this fabulous one liner!!!! ROFL!!!
Amanda: sorry.  [Awh! Isn’t Amanda wonderful.. when she makes a mistake she quickly corrects it.]
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_000326059
Lee: ok. [forgotten!! Smile plus, with Amanda feeling bad- he can now get her to easily come along to the party Winking smile I think he knows he has her now! Smile]
Amanda quietly:
yeah.
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_000328595 Lee (suddenly in business mode- closing the door on anymore personal conversation!): now there is a 2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_000330296diplomatic reception tomorrow night at
the British ambassador’s house, and I think it would look a lot better if I had someone that I…
Amanda: You just mean you need a person . . .
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_000334000

[Suddenly the dog pic is crooked again LOL!  and both Lee and Amanda are standing in the same spot for their close ups- right in front of that pic! LOL its pretty obvious!]
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_000338071

Lee: Yeah, just somebody to walk in with.
Amanda: I understand.
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_000342075
Lee: Good. Yeah. And, uh, look, I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but if you did come with me, you just might see an old friend of yours.
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_000349082
Amanda:(surprised) An old friend?
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_000351084
The scene ends here..
An old friend.. at the British ambassador’s?? It would have been cool if Amanda had guessed it was Connie Winking smile
Where to start with this scene huh!
Firstly : ‘ I need you… I came to ask you out’ – What to make of it? Well, Lee needs Amanda to do something for him..  why ask her in a way that makes it sound like it’s more than what it is? These couple of lines don’t make much sense to me [the rest of the scene does though].. I can’t shake the theory that this is pure fan service – a fabulous sound bite for the promo to get all us shippers excited!

When was the last time we saw Lee ask Amanda to accompany him to a work party? Service above and beyond? anyone?? we’ve seen them attend a number of parties since, but we haven’t seen Lee ask Amanda out- I don’t think-anyone think of a time?

They went to a party together for a job in Dead Ringer- remember that? when Lee reacted strongly to the idea that Amanda could be thinking it was a date??!!! Sooooo what’s going on here then? Wouldn’t he be extra clear to ensure Amanda didn’t get the wrong idea? .. he does make it sound like a date here..  why say ‘I came to ask you out’? why not – I need someone to come with me for my cover..

Well.. here are a few ideas: Lee could have been testing Amanda… to see what her reaction would be.. but to me, it doesn’t fit with where they are at this stage ( whatever order you watch it in!)- or.. there is the lovely fall back idea that this is Lee’s subconscious peeking out- accidentally asking her out like he really wants to deeeeeep down! Winking smile but.. I think that is too Freudian for smk!

Then, Lee gets a bit sensitive when Amanda asks about Margot?? when he just asked her out and made it sound like a date??!!! It’s all very confusing, and it’s no wonder Amanda seems to nervously, cautiously, watch herself here.. Whatever is going on here, I love that Amanda clears up just what this request of Lee’s is- Go Amanda!  and I also love how Amanda gives Lee a little dig about how he goes through them! hehehee..

Very interesting that Lee is not happy with Amanda thinking that ‘he goes through them’ huh!! Lee is making a boundary clear with Amanda here – he can help himself to her house, but she can’t ask about his latest girlfriend or comment on how quickly they come and go! Hmm!!!

It’s interesting that Lee seems to have to sell the idea to Amanda here – talking up ‘the pleasure’  she will have.. even if it’s not a date – LOL! I think Lee is in foreign territory here with Amanda!! Smile He’s never had to convince someone to come along with him to a party Winking smile tee heee! I think that Lee really wanted Amanda to come to the party with him – not just anyone.. because of Emily.. Amanda is enjoyable company.. and also because it must be easier for Lee to do his work when attending a party with someone who knows he is working – I mean how could he go to this party with a real date?? then drug a man and drag him to the limo with his date??!!!

I think it had to be Amanda that went with him all along.. only he can’t admit this to her (yet) because this is pre Brunettes are In.. and he doesn’t want to admit he needs her –

This may be clutching at straws, but maybe that is why he fumbles the whole ‘ I need you’ thing?? and made it sound like a date?? because he didn’t want it to sound like he was saying he needed her for his work? Hmm..I don’t know!! anyway, I’ll look forward to hearing your thoughts!

  1. I agree that the comment about needing Amanda and asking her out was designed to hook people into watching. Still a girl can dream can’t she 😉
I read Paula’s take on this and I can see what she means about Lee cant take it for granted that Amanda will just fall in line after weekend. It’s a shame he can’t trust her more, I think she’s resistant because he doesn’t tell her the truth and she’s always wary of what he’s hiding,
Her line of “you do go through them” I think is the best in the entire episode. Brilliant and factual 😉 ouch Lee the truth hurts, especially when you have to admit Margo left YOU. Bruised ego there methinks 😉 However I never saw how he could take a date to a function where he’s going to be working, how would he explain doing a runner with a drugged and unconscious stranger?!

  2. Love everyone’s comments. Paula, I feel like you hit the nail on the head in terms of getting inside Lee’s mind.

A couple quotes (from us) jumped out at me..

“Lee is making a boundary clear with Amanda here – he can help himself to her house, but she can’t ask about his latest girlfriend or comment on how quickly they come and go!”

“He came at her in an ambiguous way like this, copping an attitude that was part teasing and part challenging.”

“Our Lee, Super Suave Spy Guy is still pretty dense.”

I’ve said it before, but I have one word for all these lines … Teenagers!! Throughout S2 Lee is wrestling with his emotions in the exact same way a teenager does, which makes perfect sense since the conditions that Lee was raised under stunted this aspect of his development. After watching 3 teens go through all the angst and attitude, I guess I tend to cut Lee quite a bit of slack; it seems in the case of my 3 and Lee as well, the roller coaster ride ends smoothly and safely in the end!

Hehe, glad you’re still enjoying the “taking off” line, Iwsod. Gotta love SMK humor!!

    1. Hello!
So glad to hear from you guys!! Nice to know you are still around 🙂

Paula, your explanation for Lee’s behaviour makes a lot of sense! Yeah Lee’s errr ‘approach’ seems less confusing to me now! though, I do think those couple of lines were there as fan service still..
I agree, Lee is not assuming Amanda will go along with accompanying him to the party – it is very interesting given what he does later in the episode (you know taking over her house.. redecorating her dining room.. all without asking Amanda or even explaining..) You’ve got me thinking Paula – especially by bringing up Weekend – good thinking!! That episode says alot about this!
Paula, from your comments ( correct me if I have misunderstood) – I think you are saying post Weekend Lee is very unsure of what Amanda will agree to. I would say Lee was unsure about what Amanda would agree to at the beginning of weekend.. because he intentionally keeps from Amanda the true nature of the job.. and leaves out the details – you know.. being err Mrs Lee Stetson! sharing a room! Aie! 😉 at least that was my interpretation of his behaviour, maybe you see that differently..
So in a way, your interpretation of Lee’s behaviour here in the kitchen is very much in line with his previous behavior- being unsure of whether Amanda would agree to come with him.. and convincing her that it will be fun for her…
To me, with your insights, it all fits together quite nicely! You’ve helped clear some of my confusion!! 🙂
Though.. the two lines ‘ I need you’ & ‘I came to ask you out’ are IMHO total fan service! 🙂

Paula, it’s also a really interesting idea that Emily insisted on Amanda being there.. You may be right.. why did I not consider that an option? hmm.. I guess I was focused on Lee actually wanting Amanda to accompany him – but not wanting to admit it.. ?? Oh and I suppose if it was Emily’s idea – he could have just told her Emily will be there and she wants to see you – rather than go through the awkward convincing of Amanda to accompany him – which we agree he feels he has to ‘sell’..

I agree with you again Paula! It makes perfect sense that this episode is the Lee and Emily show! 🙂 and there is lots of things that can be explored with this set up – which are great.. I probably expressed it poorly: but my thinking was this has value and is very entertaining in itself, but it is not the usual smk episode, and there is not enough Lee and Amanda together for me to count it a favourite.

Actually, I was thinking yesterday – by itself this episode is very entertaining and enjoyable! but.. as I go through the episodes one at a time- in order? I find by this point, I am tired of Lee’s behaviour/ attitude towards Amanda and I want to see progress .. and after the lovely closeness of playing possum- it’s a bit of a shock again! but.. I probably wouldn’t feel that way about the episode if I was just watching them at random, and just took the episode on it’s own – I look forward to exploring more of what this episode has to offer inspite of my impatience with Lee, and Amanda’s status in their work together! [I hope I am making sense here- I’m not quite 100% well yet! ]

I liked what you said about Lee taking Amanda into his confidence Paula.. maybe this is a great lead up to Brunettes are in and the resolution it offers in this area! I am sure I would enjoy this episode much more if it had been earlier in the season! Emily’s influence on Lee and his respect and admiration for her are very heartwarming to me – to know that Lee does indeed respect women and value them – ahem.. he is no James Bond [thank goodness!] afterall 😉 oh dear.. I am ranting away here.. so sorry!

Hi Cindy – Maybe Lee didn’t want to say ‘ I need you for a cover’ because he thought Amanda would say no to that? [ I’m thinking of Magic bus..where Amanda challenged him on what would be her cover .. and of course of Weekend ] that’s making sense to me 😉 so I’m going with that! 🙂

Yes Cindy! Isn’t it a wonderful thing to see Lee reveal: he cares about what Amanda thinks of him and his relationships with women?? !!!! that is huge IMO! Yes that’s a cool idea of yours! -if Lee is a womaniser it is a way to keep Amanda at a distance: and yet.. he doesn’t want her to think he is!!! 🙂

Hi Melissa– Ohhh I sooo agree!! the taking over of Amanda’s house is a really big deal in my view! I’m looking forward to hearing what you think about that part of the episode! 🙂

Hiya Raffie! Ahhh I love your theory about Lee being a teenager.. explains his mood swings beautifully 😉

      1. Just to clarify, my thought was that while Lee in “Weekend” withheld information from Amanda about her cover, he also assumed she’d let it go and play along once they were away from home and it was too late to back out. She more than demonstrated that would not be the case. In “The Three Faces of Emily,” he’s a little more doubtful and seems to think he’ll have to work a little harder to get her on the same page. But my real thoughts were looking ahead toward “Ship of Spies,” when he finally explains himself when Amanda calls him out on not bringing her on board fully informed. I think he didn’t tell her about taking over her house in “The Three Faces” because it was last-minute and he was just dreading having to explain it. That, and he was truely desperate! Good thing Emily’s there to smooth things over for him a bit.

        1. Hey Paula! cool! reading you loud and clear now 🙂 sounds like we agree more than I realised! 🙂

What you said about why Lee doesn’t ask about Amanda’s house? I have come to see it this way also! but.. I’ll hold off saying more till I post about it – so I don’t repeat myself and bore you all!

Yes! Looking forward to ship of spies! 🙂 not long now!!

  3. This scene is funny in that Amanda gets a dig in about his ‘girlfriends’. So we know that she thinks that his girlfriends are like kids and that he goes through them 🙂

Parts of this episode takes me back to ‘Dead Ringer’ when Lee just told her that he was going to use her house. IMHO it shows disrespect, well here they even redo her dining room with out permission. If I had been Amanda in both episodes I would have thrown him out!!!

  4. Yeah I think the “I need you, I came to ask you out” was to whip the fans into a frenzy for the promo commercials. BAD SMK! Toying with our emotions like that.
Our Lee, Super Suave Spy Guy is still pretty dense. What would be wrong with “I need you as a cover”? Perhaps Amanda wouldn’t have made the cringe- worthy stage whisper “OOOOH — YOU ARE ON A CASE!” during the party (I will attribute that to her headband being too tight and her inhaling paint stripper fumes, but I digress). You would think our boy would have learned during Dead Ringer that perhaps giving Amanda a little bit of information would have saved a lot of trouble. It gets even more ludicrous during Ship of SQUEEE! I mean Spies coming up next.
I loved the exchange about Margot. Lee subconsciously cares what Amanda thinks of him — otherwise he would play up his “love’em and leave’em” playboy reputation to convince Amanda to keep her distance. Ha!

  5. I see a couple of things going on here. First, Lee enjoys keeping Amanda off balance, probably because she throws him off so frequently. He came at her in an ambiguous way like this, copping an attitude that was part teasing and part challenging. But interestingly, I see something else, too. Because of all they’ve been through together up to now, and especially following an experience like “Weekend,” Lee isn’t comfortable just assuming Amanda’s going to go along with his plan. Sure, he comes into her house all cocky and presumptuous, but in the end, he’s positioning himself to “sell” her on the idea of helping him as his cover. Lastly, I think he chose Amanda as his cover at the insistance of Emily Farnsworth. I can imagine a conversation where Emily plots their spy scheme (she is the senior agent, after all), lays out all the plans with Lee, and then gives him a host of very sensible reasons why Amanda is the only one who would make a suitable cover for this assignment.

I realize this one is more Emily and Lee rather than Lee and Amanda, but I think it makes perfect sense if you consider Emily as the lead agent on this case. Then I like to think Amanda’s involvement at all is expressly at the request of Emily. Lee’s learning, but it’s still going to be awhile before he takes Amanda fully into his confidance, either professionally or personally.
