The next morning.. we find the two goons are still sitting outside Amanda’s home.. and
Whatsit awakes to find he ain’t in Kansas anymore
Suffer Whatsit!
We see Emily in her harrrd Rrrussian perrrrsona..
To me, these are some of the funniest SMK scenes in the whole series!!!!
Whatsit: Where am I?
Emily: Ah, the plaintive cry of every man that drinks to diiiishhhh-gusting excess!!
Whatsit: Who are you?!!! [What are you?! ]
Emily: I am Tatiana Federovna Romarcheva.
Whatsit: Romarcheva?
Emily: I see someone in Moscow has mentioned my name to you.
Whatsit: You’re KGB – head of operations security.
Emily pauses and gets in Whatsit’s face to add-
Emily: And…
….dishhhhhh-iiiii-plin!!!!
Ohhhhh my!!! that is utterly hilarious!!! How they managed to film this scene I don’t know.. there must be many outtakes of them cracking up laughing!!!
Emily’s accent cracks me up no matter what she says!!!! her body language ROFLMAO!.. she is soo butch!!! hehehee..
I love how she adjusts the itchy wig behind Whatsit and how she gets way closer than is acceptable 😆 to tell him she is head of dish-ip-line! Her characters make this episode!!
Emily err I mean ‘Tatiana’, explains Whatsit is in the Soviet Embassy:Which means that even if
you are in Washington D. C., you are on Soviet soil, and you are in a grrrreat deal of trrrrrrouble.
Whatsit is bemused.. and dares to laugh at the scary Tatiana! Whatsit: But Why??!!! haa..
Ohhhh this is just too funny!!! Tatiana is not pleased with his attitude.. time for some dishiplin!
Emily (Tatiana): Vvvyyyyyy??????
… You dare to ask me????…
…Vyyyyyyyy????!!!!!! That is a question I should ask. Vy!!! Ven you are finally given a task of
trrrrremendous imporrrrtance do you act so irresponsibly? Vyyy!! Ven you are not in this country even one full day before you get drunk and pass out at a diplomatic reception?
Whatsit, now beginning to get nervous, confesses he doesn’t remember much of last night.. and Emily produces a photo of him and Amanda to refresh his memory..
Whatsit responds: Yes. Yes! Now that’s Mrs King!
I’ve always been curious about the picture on the wall behind Emily- I didn’t know who he was!
Playing possum taught me about the hero of the soviet union medal (as Yuri is awarded one). Later you can see this guy in the portrait has 4 –
which narrowed it down: as only two people have been awarded the medal four times.. soooo I figured out (smk is good for my learning Russian history!) the man is Leonid Brezhnev: the head of the USSR from 1977 till 1982 [wikipedia dates: so if anyone knows better feel free to update us!]till just before smk started in 1983. [I’ve posted the USSR/SMK timeline for our future reference..]
It seems the early 80’s were a crazy time for leading the USSR.. lots of very old leaders in quick succession after Brezhnev- Which spawned a running joke in Russia that the new sport at the Kremlin was ‘Hearse Racing’ – I mentioned this little find in the comments of Playing Possum: as I think this is referenced by the hearse chase in that episode
Chernenko was the head of state when this episode aired..but no picture of him was seen in this ep. [This was the Feb 1984 issue of TIME with him on the cover] What a different time in history this was!
Interesting to keep an eye out for the references to the political leaders of the time! Hope I’m not boring you.. but I find it very interesting.. especially since I was very young when smk aired and a lot of this went over my head! [Am sure a lot of it still does ] Any USSR experts? I am not an expert.. just a curious smk fan
who loves Babushka dolls
LOL the dining room which is labelled Russian territory has two pics of Lenin? overkill!
We find Amanda making her way into the kitchen for the first time that morning.. Amanda looks to me to have an air of determination.. as she approaches Lee- she’s decided she wants answers!
Though.. she is being nice- as always! Love how she surprises Lee by pulling out his ear plug
Lee is listening to Emily’s interrogation in Amanda’s kitchen.. I think Amanda hints that she wants to know more, but Lee is not forthcoming.. so eventually, Amanda directly asks Lee questions – about time!
Though, this is a bit strange.. last night?: No need to explain! This morning?: ( now Lee is no longer wearing his magic tux maybe?!) she has a right to know!: after all , it’s her house [ so was it not your house last night Amanda??!!! 😉 ] Oh well, maybe after the shock of it all she changed her mind…but.. glad she finally asks.. Well done Amanda! and very glad that Lee agrees she should know some of what is going on – happy to see him take her a little more into his confidence. Well done Lee! 🙂
Love how Lee points out he went home and changed – yep.. that’s our Lee.. catching bad guys.. and lookin good! Mmmmmmmm!!!! Looking v good!
[I could swear they both lick their lips here! See for yourself! ]
Oh and love how Amanda gets tangled up in Lee’s headphones ( a metaphor for Amanda getting tangled up in his work? His life? his heart? )
Okay, I’ll let Lee explain it:
Hit it Lee!!: Sydney Whitset is a small-time British businessman who decided to earn some extra dough through treason and espionage. Now under trade visits, he’s been a recent regular traveller to Moscow. But what he’s really been doing is selling them secrets… the British, actually Emily, decided just to let him run. So far, he’s been small-time, but it’s
clear that Moscow is grooming him for something big.
….Ten days ago, two soldiers stole the plans to an Anglo-American super fighter plane called
Falcon wing. Now we clamped down on all the known Soviet courier routes and bingo, Mr. Whitsett shows up in the US of A.. Amanda: Mr Whitset is the courier!
Okay! All clear! I think I’ve got it.
That’s all for now guys!!! As always- I’d love to hear what you think… do you agree? disagree? have questions? comments?? insights?? feel free to share! Hope you are loving Tatiana as much as I am
Back with more soon!
Hi, I found it very good that you added some historical background. I am probably the only one but I like Mr Whatsit, he is quite fun.

Oh, goodness, I do love this first scene of JS in her KGB persona! This part is just over the top Mission:Impossible meets Carol Burnett Show Hitleresque Tim Conway interrogating Lyle Waggoner, is it not? 😂😂😂😂

She’s genius isn’t she! One of my favourite smk comedy moments!!!
You lost me with the Mission impossible thing but yeah! JS rocks! 🙂

Oh my goodness — you need to check out Mission Impossible, especially Seasons 2 and 3 of the original and then pretty much any ep of the 1988 continuation. They totally did stings like this all the time. I love that show.
In fact, the 1988 ep “The Princess” has a scene that has a LOT of similarities to a moment here. (I don’t want to spoil it, but trust me!)

Jean Stapleton does such a great job with her overacting in this scene. I can’t help but watch whilst constantly thinking she put that lip stick without the aid of a mirror because she’s overrun the natural lines of her lips LOL
Lee is looking extremely handsome in his blue shirt and beige jacket. Cute scene between him and Amanda, they both look so relaxed here together in her kitchen 🙂

Welcome, Kristen!
It’s the over-the-top persona that my youngest enjoys. She will do the “Russian-speak” along with Emily. And we both think “Walter,” who will be seen later, is hilarious, as well.

Hi Debilyn – I must say the picture of you and your girls watching and enjoying smk together is wonderful!!! [are your girls teens?]
I think you are on to something! It is very over the top- especially her facial expressions ( as I enjoyed choosing pics to post of! haaa!) and her Rrrrrussian accent!
I agree Walter is genius and his err ‘Madam’? I find to be just as over the top!!! I’m looking forward to that part!
Great to hear from you Debilyn!

My youngest is 12, my older one is 18. My youngest has been an SMK fan for a couple of years now. My older one is not quite the fan we are, but lately she’s been more interested. I think she’s beginning to realize how much it is about the relationship, and that’s what has her intrigued.

Wow.. that is fabulous Debilyn! I would be interested to hear what they think of some of the more err controversial moments – you know like *ick* Francine and Rollo! ( or did you skip that episode? ) 😉 I remember Cindy said some interesting conversations had been sparked by watching smk with her daughters.
Hope you are well!

My 10yo son is rather squeamish of any “kissing parts” right now, but he was utterly grossed out at “Francine kissing that bad guy”. He politely requested to never have to watch that again! Perhaps I am a bad mom for having my 7 and 10yos watch this show? For the most part SMK is so family friendly and compared to so much kids are exposed to these days, it’s not that concerning. However I did decline to go into too much explanation of what was going on in brunettes are in. Oh dear. #momoftheyear

No, not a bad mom at all. 🙂

Eh. Details are completely unnecessary.
I think it’s great family TV! I grew up watching good guy vs bad guy shows like The Dukes of Hazzard and Scarecrow and Mrs. King with my dad, and I think I turned out ok 😊

Ah, head smack! I just very quickly looked through your post about the Soviet leaders and wondered why I didn’t remember most of them. After all, I wasn’t a kid in the 80’s. Then your post here cleared that up … I’d completely forgotten that they’d started dropping like flies! It was really rather amazing. Oh the memories….
Jean Stapleton is priceless as Tatiana, isn’t she?!? Such a great idea to contrast her sweet “real life” personality with such a Soviet toughie. And oh, boy, the stereotype that SMK is so shamelessly flaunting of loud, authoritative, frighteningly buxom, masculine Soviet women in official positions! I love the SMK stereotypes … they do them so well! You’re right .. I bet they giggled all the way through filming this. I wonder if people sort of gathered to watch. What great entertainment that would have been. Well, maybe it’s old hat to an actor, but I agree with you that I would have loved to have seen it or at

I think in this case, since we’ve got the whole “play within a play” thing going on (in case any of my high school English teachers read this, yes I apparently did retain SOMETHING from my classes 😄), they can even MORE fully embrace the stereotype, since even within the context of the show, it’s acting! Not only does the show want to quickly convey information/emotions to the audience, but the CHARACTERS want to quickly convey information/emotions to THEIR “audience”! 😁

Welcome, Kristen!! This is the best SMK blog ever, glad you found it!
Guess what? I finally ordered seasons 1 and 2 and season 4 will be here on thursday! (Uh, wish I’d known about that 12.49 deal) I’m so excited! I’ve been watching SMK all weekend during our trip to Birmingham, Alabama for a LEGO convention (my brothers are lego builders) WHICH happens to be where our beloved Kate Jackson lives! Sadly, I didn’t run into her while I was there, but oh well. 🙂
The three faces of Emily is one of my favorite episodes!! I thought it was SOOOO funny! 😀 Enjoying the walk-through, as always. I read every post even though I don’t always comment! 🙂

Hi, I discovered your blog a couple of months ago. I should have commented before now, you do such a good job. I’ve been a fan of SMK since I was a kid and had a crush on Lee. Just wanted to let everyone know that seasons 1-3 are for sale from the WarnerBros store (WBshop.com) for $12.49!!! I’d actually not purchased any of the seasons yet (I’ve been holding out for a box set) but at that price I couldn’t pass them up! I hope you keep up with the blog. It is so much fun to check in every few days and see how you analyze the episodes. Your comments put a smile on my face….or is that all the pics of Lee in a tux, or in anything for that matter! 🙂 Thanks for all your hard work….can’t wait for Ship of Spies…sigh…

Thanks for the welcome…from everyone!
I was wondering about your name IWSOD…makes perfect sense now. I’m glad it worked and we can now watch SMK any time we want to 🙂
I’ve been a fan since I was just a kid and watched the original airings. I would go into our den away from everyone else so there would be no distractions. I remember once we were vacationing in California and we were visiting family. Everyone decided they wanted to go out to eat for dinner but I didn’t want to miss SMK so I said I wasn’t feeling well. Sad but true…I was addicted!
The reruns were on PAX when I was at college and I was ecstatic. I made VHS copies of all the episodes I could. Those are long gone now though and for the last few years I’ve just been relying on youtube. I can’t wait to get my DVD’s….hopefully they’ll be here Monday!!!

Oh my god, I do actually remember Brezhnev!
Well anyway, for me this whole thing is not funny at all. Not even a hint of funny. I refuse to rewatch this!
We have a lot of snow in UK right now and I will go sledging now. Schools and university were closed down yesterday. That is the country where the concept of winter tyres is as yet unknown to the population 😉

Three faces of Emily is one of your favourites and you find the episode funny – did you find the moment where Amanda’s house gets taken over funny? Do you find Russian Emily funny? which parts ( if you don’t mind my asking) do you find funniest?
