8/11 Season Two, Episode 11: Three Faces of Emily-Scarecrow and Mrs King

So Amanda is on the way to Wilson’s.. and the best paint collection.. Amanda notices she is being followed by the two goons..
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001456690
Hey! it looks like her hair is suddenly much shorter than it was when she was talking in the kitchen!!! This shot of Amanda driving was probably filmed and added much later (as a ‘ pick up’  – dvd commentaries have taught me this new industry lingo!!) when other episodes were being filmed. You can even see the shot was filmed in a studio- suddenly no traffic or road behind her.. only weird gray and she is supposedly seeing this in her rear view mirror!
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001459192
[This is hair-raising stuff!!! – Okay! I couldn’t resist using this pun again!! Winking smile ] Earlier hair:
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001338071
The same thing happened to Amanda’s hair in Brunettes are in..  looks like there was a bit of cross over with the filming- Remember me wondering if we saw the Magic Dog named Margot in any other episode? well.. I’ve been hunting around mid season 2 eps.. and I found it only once again: In Brunettes Are In! – it is very fleetingly that we get a peek at fridge door..but here it is:

It’s when Lee is punching out the blonde baddie in the 2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_000276009dark ( thus the weird colour) and it’s only on screen for second- but I can see the same stuff on the fridge as in this ep! Smile
Also, I’ve found a link to another episode that’s coming up soon..

I love how when Amanda’s car turns: she indicates.. but the baddies following her? they don’t indicate rofl!

Back at the interrogation, Whatsit reveals that the sellers have already been signaled who the go-between will be: Mrs King! Argh!!!!
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001495228
JS does a fantastic job here of playing a character who is playing a character, and maintains the character, but shows the hidden character – oh my head hurts! tee hee.. anyway she does  a brilliant job of looking concerned: but maintaining her cover for Whatsit! Winking smile She leaves Whatsit to sort out the Mule!

Rushing into the kitchen, now clearly distressed- Emily sees Amanda is no longer there! uh oh!! Emily finds Lee is rushing to pack up..
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_0015172502.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001518251
I Love Emily and Lee’s concern for Amanda…
Lee: I heard, Amanda’s the mule.
Emily:
Where is she?
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001521254
Lee: Paint store on 6th Street.  [Yep! Amanda even gave you the address to save time with her rescue! Winking smile She’s such a clever girl! Smile ]
Emily her distress rising:
Well, we’ve got to hurry, Lee. She doesn’t know she’s being targeted.
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001525258
Lee
grabs Emily by the arms trying to get her to focus : Emily-
Emily: Those soldiers are killers, if she doesn’t . . .
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001526259
Lee loudly:  Emily!
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001527761
[Emily snaps out of it! And Lee is gentle with her here now] Shh. We’ll get her, okay.
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001529763
Emily takes off her hard Russian persona wig, now calmer: Yes. I’ll need my bag. [That’s quite a bag she has!]
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001535769
…It’s showtime again.
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001536269

It isn’t just Emily who is concerned for Amanda- and after all the taking over her house stuff, it is nice to see that Lee is on the job- but he is deteremined to get to Amanda in time! swooon….
They rush off together.. Lee giving Emily a quiet smile now that she has gotten her head together again! It is lovely to see how Emily needs Lee here- and Lee steps up with his mentor and calms her down – well done Lee! They are a great team.. and it shows how great Lee can be in a partnership: giving us a glimpse into the future of Lee and Amanda working together as equals. [Only here, Emily is more senior and Lee junior.. but: they still work together as equals and the junior agent can step up when need be: just like with Lee and Amanda Smile  I think this is *Okay- like everything!* addressed in Brunettes Are In: the person you are working with can be more senior than you, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need you nor that you have nothing to contribute! Smile]

Amanda’s car screeches to a halt and she hurries into the paintstore..  The baddies pull up quickly following her.  Uh ohhhhhh..
Funny! when the baddies’ car pulls up: you can see the camera crew in the car’s reflection!! Some guy with a big moustache! Smile haaa!!!
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001547480

Yep, at Wilson’s Amanda’s hair has grown long again.. Unfortunately for Amanda, the place seems to be empty! argh!!! I felt really bad for Amanda here – how scary!! The baddies enter also, and she scurries away from them [ I wonder what the baddies would make of this: surely they would suspect something isn’t right!] Ahhh Amanda.. she turns to the baddies, no longer able to deny they are there and she smiles: very nicely!
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_0015632962.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001568802
They look silently at one another.. and Garrison gives Amanda a little smile.. at this- they hear a ruckus coming in through the shop entrance- ROFL!! Ah.. now here is one of my favourite parts! Emily the Snobby old rich chick and Lee? her houseboy!- who looks at Emily with a little more admiration than is appropriate! rofl!!!
I just have to quote you the script’s description here:

…the most remarkable thing about her (Emily’s character ‘Matron’ ) is her voice – it is shrill, loud, and imperious as she aims a non-stop stream of language at Lee. Our suave superspy has been transformed into a toadying employee of Emily’s pushy matron. A scarf is tied in an ascot around his neck.’

– our suave superspy?? now a toadying employee? roflmao!!! I love it!! I have always been curious to see how much of this was scripted.. it is so well played! Anyway.. Emily immediately starts hammering on the bell and yells: Uh, service!!! please!!! Service!!!  Where is the proprietor???!!!!!
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001584217
Ah finally.. the proprietor arrives ‘Mr Wilson?’:  sorry ma’am, I didn’t hear you come in! [ the whole neighbourhood heard her! Winking smile ] He was in the back mixing colours..

Emily ( Madam): weeeell!…
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001590123
I think you might cease those petty chores and assist me??!!!
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001593126
…Now, I want to see all your red paint samples.
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001595628

Lee (Walter) claps his hands together saying : quickly quickly! Let’s not keep madam waiting!!! [Poor Mr Wilson! Winking smile ]

The dialogue of Madam and her man Walter here is brilliant! outrageously funny! ( err at least it is to me!) Mr Wilson leads them to a table of paint samples..

Mr Wilson: Well, you see anything you like?
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001605638
Emily
(Madam): My dear sir,
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001606539
…I believe I said… 2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001608541

I wanted to see aaaaall…
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001609342

your red samples [love the handwaving! so dramatic!! Smile so over the top!] – the entire spectrum! Everything red you can put your shopkeeper’s hands on.
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001612545
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001616249[Poor Mr Wilson.. he is flabbergasted by Madam! ]

Emily (Madam) continues: Walter, you’d better check the wallpaper section –something in red and gold!!!!
Walter
walks off repeating:
Red And Gold!!!
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001620153

‘Shopkeeper’s hands’? ROFLMAO!!!

Mr Wilson holds up some samples for Madam. Proprietor: What about something like this?
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001625358
I have no idea why but Jean Stapleton’s delivery of this next line is hilarious!!!! [and this line is not in the script!]
Madam: Oh No!! that’s rrrroooose! that’s not Red!..
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001628461
I want Reeeeeeedd!
(her delivery of this line is pure genius! so over the top it’s almost Shakespearean!)
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001629162
She throws down the samples and waves her arms dramatically! [I don’t know how the actor playing Mr Wilson can keep a straight face! ]

Amanda leaves the two baddies saying she’s in the wrong department..  they must be very confused by all this!

Back to Emily (Madam): Bloooooodddd Reeeeddd!!!!! Yes, that’s better.
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001634267

Garrison tells Sykes he’ll stick close to Amanda ( Ick.. he is so creepy with how he looks at Amanda- all leery!) and Sykes can guard the front door so she can’t escape. Uh oh.. [ if she was the mule, wouldn’t she be wanting to meet with them? I would have thought they would find it strange they have to stalk her! ]

As Garrison tries to walk over to Amanda in the wallpaper section, Madam cuts him off  in her pushy hilarious way, wanting his opinion on her paint samples! Emily: Oh, oh, oh sir. Excuse me. Uh, well, I need your opinion….
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001644577
…Now, all of the furniture in the room that’s going to be painted are authentic Louis XV reproductions. Now. .
. [oh yes.. he looks like he would know authentic Louis XV style-not! He should be suspicious by now!!Especially given what is at stake here.. but nope…] I love how Emily pushes him over back towards the wall! Smile
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001647681

Amanda joins Lee in the wallpaper section.. LOL Lee keeps flipping through the wallpaper samples – but Amanda stands there talking to him.. It’s obvious they are talking to each other! Amanda should have picked up a book to look at too! Winking smile

Amanda: Lee, those two men followed me from my house.
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001652185
Lee (quietly, he keeps flipping through his samples): Mm-hmm. I want you to talk to them.
Amanda: Talk to them?
[Poor Amanda! no reassurance! She’s really freaked out!!! and with Lee the job comes first here! ugh!!]
Lee: (whispering)
Yes. There shouldn’t be any danger.
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001658091
[There shouldn’t be?? how reassuring! I wanted Lee to say I won’t let anything happen to you!!! so I could swoon!! ]
…Emily and I will be nearby.
Lee (Walter) : (loudly)
Uh, madam!!
Amanda tries to speak again, but Walter is off!
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001661094
…Madam, this selection is atrocious. It’s not even fit for the kennels. Uhhh!

Though they are very short on time.. I do wish Lee had reassured Amanda of her safety first .. but I guess this is work Lee (I think he does this more as they become closer, and he opens up to her more but I do feel sorry for Amanda here in this very scary situation!) Lee looks a bit like he doesn’t care that she is in danger.. but we know better, we saw him rush over there!! Smile   [Hey how did they get there?? was Billy still driving the limo?? maybe Lee had his car back.. ]

Love the line about the Kennels!! [ all scripted.. a fabulous script!!]
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001667100
I am really not spy material, If I had seen Lee acting ‘Walter the houseboy’ I would have been rolling around on the floor laughing.. Amanda doesn’t even seem to notice!
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001668201

You know what is interesting with this moment? Garrison is standing right in front of Lee/Walter- they have a good look at each other: Why doesn’t Garrison recognise Lee as the man who took Amanda home the night before?? and helped her carry Whatsit from the limo into her house???!!!! Aie!!

Anyway, Garrison heads over to Amanda who nervously smiles, nods and makes like okay let’s talk.. ( all of a sudden, when before she wanted to get away from them?? it is all very suspicious if you ask me! ) Garrison grabs Amanda by the arm and walks off with her: uh oh!!
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001673807
we see Lee and Emily weren’t counting on that..
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001674708
for a moment they seem stunned!!!
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001676109
They thought it would take place in the store.. there shouldn’t be any danger huh Lee?! grr.. Lee seems to nod to Emily here: as if he is again snapping her out of her worry for Amanda – she’s the matron.. he’s the houseboy: she has to be the one to call the shots!
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001676710
Emily: You’re right,Walter, there’s nothing here.
Lee: Mm-hmm. I mean, it’s . . .
Emily: Come now. We’ll go to Rockford. There’s a lovely store.
Lee: Yes.
LOL.. the shrill voice makes it’s way out the back of the store-you know what’s really suspicious? A woman of this much standing, with this much $$ shopping around at all the paint stores to look at Samples! ROFL!! She would hire someone to do it!! 😉 – not that I care, It is so funny I couldn’t care less 🙂

How did they know the baddies would talk to Amanda out the back? ugh..Well.. this is SMK! what am I thinking? They’re lucky!!!!! Smile

The baddies pass on an envelope to Amanda containing a message from their Limey friend (ROFL! I love how Amanda calls him that too as she repeats what they said.)
Amanda: I give our limey friend this and five o’clock is the time. It’s very easy.
Sykes: Let’s hit it, man.
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001703169
Garrison:
(leering at Amanda) Old Whitset’s got 2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001706172himself a cute little runner there. (yuck yuck! he strokes Amanda’s cheek and she laughs nervously.)
Amanda: Thank you so much.
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001707674
Garrison: All right.

The baddies walk off and Amanda turns around and walks straight into the boxes that were standing behind her???? weird!!!
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001712178
then.. she peeks around the side and gives Lee and Emily a thumbs up- Like she knew they were there!!
2.11 THE THREE FACES OF EMILY.avi_001715181
LOL how could she have possibly known! and.. being a self appointed protector of Amanda’s dignity ( I am calling it a POAD, sounds so much better than a GOAD Raffie!! Winking smile ) I think this makes Amanda look pretty dumb! I understand she is nervous by why would she do that, it’s not like she didn’t know they were there- the baddie pushed her onto them when they arrived!  [oh well.. I’ll get over it Winking smile ]

A big post today.. hope you don’t mind.. I just love Walter and Madam!!! Smile genius! I do love when smk puts Lee in disguises, and he can surprise Amanda – that I enjoy! I wish they did more of it.. and they did two fabulous Lee disguises in this one episode [One more to come]! Guess we have Emily to thank for that!

Okay, I’ll finish up.. thanks for stopping by and reading! I’d love to hear any thoughts, feedback, questions or anything you may have – I hope you are enjoying this episode as much as I am!!! byeeeee

  1. I know much of this post is about the scene in the paint store… But earlier on when Lee says, “I heard, Amanda’s the mule,” I feel like I can almost hear his voice. It’s probably a mixture of frustration – how does Amanda always get herself into these situations; resignation – of course Amanda’s the mule, this always happens; anxiety – aaargh she’s in danger, and finally impatience – hurry up we need to get to her in time…

I’m gonna go hunt up a clip on YouTube to see if I’m right…

  2. Okay, just to be up front and honest, I myself, being inattentive or flustered, have walked into posts, walls, doors, dogs, people, you name it! I say excuse me to inanimate objects all the time till I realize I didn’t hurt them, just me. Oh dear, and it happens more frequently than I should ever admit! So when Amanda turns around and has a run in with the boxes, I get hysterical, because one of us is obviously channeling the other! Yep, I do have a sick sense of humor……

  3. I would love to know how did Lee and Emily a) get changed so quick and b) get over to the hardware store in record time?!! Super fast agency sedan?!
Love Lee and his mincing, he does it so well. Have to say he looks mighty fine in that blue shirt 😉 even with the dodgy parting and cravat (hideous invention).
Emily is absolutely fantastic here. So over the top and I love her rolling her rrrrrrr’s 😀
I am not surprised that Amanda stumbled into those boxes. I think I would be terrified to if some bad guy was also giving me the come on 😦

    1. Hi Jenbo….I was wondering the same thing as I watched this episode..they came into the store not even a minute behind Amanda. I guess they were quick change artists in the the car…LOL..but I would love to have been a fly on the wall watching her and Lee both transform into those get-ups… ..rotfl.and I guess Emily must have a huge bag of costumes wherever she goes, she seems to be ready for anything….kinda reminds me of Mrs. Doubtfire..lmbo

  4. “I love how when Amanda’s car turns: she indicates.. but the baddies following her? they don’t indicate rofl!”
    I laughed at that, too.

One fleeting thought I had from the paint store scene was that if they’d given Emily some sparkly glasses, she could’ve almost been Dame Edna Everage. Lee’s no Madge, though.

Sorry… rambling… it just tickled me. I’ll try to stay on topic in future.

    1. KC! If it’s fun.. and even remotely smk related – then it is not rambling.. it is a fascinating insight that simply must be shared! haaaa!!! seriously though, feel free to share away 🙂

Dame Edna?? why she is my fellow countryman errr woman.. err I don’t know what she is!!! too right! Lee is no Madge – roflmbo! and for that I am most grateful!!! haaaa

  5. This episode makes me think of a grade-school field trip. Remember how exciting it was to have a total change of pace from the day to day grind of the classroom? I think this is how doing this episode must have been for the actors, starting with reading the script. Can you imagine, as an actor (which I definitely am not!) getting a script like this and realizing you can really cut loose?! What fun! And we definitely get to enjoy the benefit of this. You’re so right … there should have been more. I mean we do see it in snippets … the DOA Casablanca scene is pretty out there in its own way … but wouldn’t it have been nice to see S4 shaken up with some truly ludicrous scenes like this. It’s one thing to have a scene or a shot where you give a short laugh out loud (of which there are plenty throughout SMK), but it’s entirely another thing when the scene plays out so well that you feel like you’ve jumped in and joined the party yourself 🙂

Funny how that light purple shirt (was it really that color? musta been but I never noticed until now) looked so dapper on Lee in the kitchen, but looked so wimpy and “lilac” when paired with an ascot and that crazy hair-do!

    POAD? Yep, works for me!

  6. I do enjoy the many “faces” of Emily and Lee, too, in this episode. It would have been fun to have seen more of this throughout the series.

    1. Yeah! And there are more than three aren’t there?!

I guess it doesn’t matter if it’s a play on the Three faces of Eve – has anyone seen that?? I haven’t seen it for a very long time.. but my memory is that Eve has three personalities – and is a sick lady! Is that right?

I’m wondering if the title is the only connection?? Anyone thought about this?

      Like

      1. Yes, I barely remember watching the movie on TV that was based on “Three Faces of Eve.” I thought the whole thing very strange.

        1. ROFL Raffie your description of finally having some freedom to break out and go for it on a field trip is fabulous!! 🙂 I agree! I really wish they had done this more.. and I wish they had allowed Amanda to play more outrageous cover characters also [Maybe this is one reason why I love burn notice so much!] KJ gets to break out in the episode DOA, and in Odds on a dead pigeon – she had alot of fun in season 2 huh! 😉 but.. it wasn’t the Amanda character playing a cover.. Ahhh anywhere else where she goes for it?

Correct me if I’m wrong – I don’t recall seasons 3 and 4 in as great a detail – but my feeling is Lee and Amanda tend to be pretty serious – and it is the bit characters, minor roles which add the elements of kooky craziness to the show.. I think Lee as Walter shows what an under-utilised talent BB had for comedy – he did a fabulous job!!! [and not laughing at Madam was tough!] I guess they didn’t want to stretch the reputation of the super suave spy too far.. drat..

Oh?? the blue shirt is a purple shirt? Ohh I hope that isn’t the pics colour misleading you – if it is my bad! but it was definitely blue in the kitchen..and blue as Walter – I think that goes to show how fabulous BB’s acting was – you could swear he had changed more than just adding an ascot and slicking his hair!! 🙂

Debilyn, I just found a trailer of the Movie on youtube – whoa!!!! It is nothing like the Emily Character!!! A word pun only I think.. at least.. I hope- for Emily’s sake! 🙂

      2. Hello again two years later! When I first say the title I too thought of “The Three Faces of Eve”. We actually watched and discussed that movie in my English class in high school. Wonder why they called this segment “Three Faces of Emily” when she actually played more than three characters…herself, the Russian woman, the Matron, the cleaning lady and the homeless woman? All well played I might add!

        1. I always love to hear from you about any episode we’ve walked through so far – fun to be reminded of previous episodes!!!
you’ll just have to forgive me if I’m not able to really elaborate about things.. my headspace isn’t 3FOE.. lol..
did we end up discussing the title at some point in that walk through? I’m thinking we did. It’s technically not accurate but it was a pun on the movie title and was playing up Emily’s covers – ‘Vy? you dare to ask me vy???!!!’ whahahahaa.
Sometimes when people read a previous walk through, they find if they read the whole walk through – eventually we’ve discussed something along the way they were thinking of.. but hey.. say it anyway – it’s all good 🙂

oh so agree! very well played! I really wish we had seen more covers like this – from Emily but also from the other smk characters.. lots of fun to be had with the covers!

  8. Just wanted to say, that the richest people I know shop for bargains and know were to get things cheap best. In my experience they keep a tight hold on their money but are usually quite willing to help out with their wealth of shopping for bargains experience. It does not seem to make a difference in which price category an item falls into.

But of course I do only know very well of people and not rich rich ones, meaning people who worked for their wealth. Not people in showbizz or rich heirs.

With the Madam being so snobby, I figured I’d go with that stereotype 😉 and I was surprised at her involvement in this petty chore LOL!
I could imagine her going to a top line french paint store or something- but I Wilson’s? haaaa! Poor Mr Wilson! He didn’t even get a sale out of all that work!

Glad to hear you’re all enjoying this madam/walter moment!
