We find ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ have somehow made their way back to the agency.. and Lee has his car.. I would have thought Lee’s stunt would have taken more than a few hours to sort out.. lol Billy must have bailed them out teehee.. can you imagine the fan fic if Francine had? tee hee.
Lee and Amanda are in Billy’s office…
Lee: I should have never let your mother get involved.
Amanda: Oh, I can’t believe I let her get in the car.
[It’s sweet isn’t it.. they are both blaming themselves – neither is blaming the other awh!!]
Billy enters
Billy: OK, the police have an APB on them, as well as Mikhail Stanislav….
…Couldn’t you have at least checked the police out before you ran them off the road????
[Billy, you read my mind. If only Lee had been wearing a tux at the time.. a) it would have made me like the scene more.. and b) Billy could have said- “In a Tuxedo???!!!!”]
Lee: I didn’t want to tip them off!…
[Yes driving past and looking to see if anyone was in the backseat could have been a dead giveaway?! but umm.. good to hear your reasoning Lee!
Lol.. Billy let’s team logic down here.. from his expression he seems to concede Lee has a point! Ah well.. ]
… What’s that you said about Stanislav?
Billy: We’ve had agents on his house all day. He never returned from his meeting with Zernoff.
Amanda: Sir. My mother…..
Billy: We’ll find her and Zernoff, the police have an APB on them…. [lol ummm you just said that two seconds ago!] …Well you were right about one thing…The Metro Police do not have a car number 1017.
[Interesting to see that armed guard behind them in the bullpen patrolling… I haven’t seen that before- have you?]
Lee: Well whatever we’ve run into is quite an elaborate operation huh? What have you got on the dead man? [Given Billy said the information is worth Billions.. why are they surprised?!]
Billy: His full name is Jerry Dunlap. He worked with the Aero North Industries, in the defence weapons division. Their CEO is Sanderson North. Perhaps you’ve heard the name? Friends in high places. That’s about it. Oh, and we found traces of BZ in Zernoff’s vodka.
[Billy is just full of information! Is it just me or would Francine usually deliver at least some of this information? I guess she is still staking out Zernoff’s. rofl.. I can imagine her now – struggling to whip up something in the kitchen based on what Amanda brought for them.. and cursing the suburbs!!]
Amanda: What’s BZ?
Lee: It’s knockout drops plus. Causes disorientation, slurred speech and so on.
Amanda: You mean somebody slipped him a Huck Finn?
We see Billy react to this.. he smiles and then looks at Lee – I like that there’s affection there in this little moment
Then we see Lee react with a big smile- awh!
[I love this because it doesn’t have an ‘isn’t she an amateur’ vibe.. it has an ‘isn’t she cute’ vibe!!! what do you think??]
Lee: Auh, I think that’s Mickey Finn.
Amanda flatly: I know that.
She looks at Billy.. still serious!
lol… Actually, this sounds like something Dotty would say too.. no? [lol give up Amanda. you’re busted!]
So umm.. I’m so use to thinking Dotty is home looking after the boys.. that I wonder.. who is looking after the boys? Is Mr Doyle still looking after them? what luck they were with him when this happened.. If this was season 1 there would have been a whole subplot about how the boys were being looked after.. Lee probably would have asked Mrs Marsden to go look after them.. or heck.. Maybe Leatherneck.. he could have distracted them with that chewing gum (lol did I just suggest feeding drugs to children?! whahaha).
Back to the “debriefing center”, where Zernoff is being led to a room.
Dotty sees Lawrence thank the fake cop, and the cop leaves.
Dotty: Are you in charge here? Because if you are I want to tell you something. You are making a mockery out of American Justice.
Lawrence: Mrs.West isn’t it?
Dotty: Dorothea West and I want you to know that at this very moment, my daughter is calling-
(Dotty why don’t you demand your phone call!)
Lawrence: I understand, I understand. I know how confusing this must seem to you Mrs.West…
…Please, rest assured Dr. Zernoff is in good hands…
…You’re right, this is not an ordinary police station. But then Dr. Zernoff is not an ordinary person. As I’m sure someone with your sensitivity can understand why this um,…
…incident must be handled with utmost care…
[Oh nooo she looks like she is buying it! maybe?]
…Why don’t you have a seat?
[whoa.. Lawrence is so over the top here in his approach.. I am wondering if Dotty believes him.. she appears to- as she takes a seat like he asked.. but she may be still suspecting him. I think Dotty might know when she is being treated like an idiot.. the little condescending pat pat on the arm is too much!
plus how did they get such special treatment so quickly?! Those cops just happened to find Zernoff at that restaurant? I don’t think any of this would make sense – not even to Dotty.. mind you, Dotty has a way of making her own sense out of things doesn’t she – Will she have one of her flashes of brilliance here? or is she so overwhelmed by it all that she’s going along? I honestly have nooo idea! lol I’m probably wrong.. but don’t tell me!! I’m looking forward to seeing where Dotty goes with all this! ]
Dotty sits down in a waiting area. Lawrence walks over to a “cop” at a nearby desk.
Lawrence: Make sure she does not leave.
He looks back at Dotty.. and then walks off..
Dotty gives him a totally over the top smile and wave.. is she too playing a role here?
Is she pretending she doesn’t suspect anything when really she does? don’t tell me! 🙂
The scene finishes here.. so now seems a good time for me to finish too! I can’t wait to hear what you all think of this part of the episode.. the episode so far.. or heck.. the whole show so far!
I’ll be off the internet for the next five days at least.. so I am guessing it will be a week before I can publish a new post.. Soooo JWWM is taking a short break for a week.. and I’ll be back, refreshed and ready to go with a new post next weekend!
I’ll be able to read my emails and I’ll look forward to reading your comments but it’s unlikely I’ll be able to respond.
Maybe now is good chance to revisit an old scene or episode you’ve been wanting to get back to.. posts are always open to comment on.. Byeeeeeee!!!! Hope you are all well and avoid those Huck Finns!
This scene in Billy’s office is brought to you by the Billy’s Fan Club. 😁😁😁 I love Billy, and I love him to pieces in this scene. All three of them, actually. He has such a great stern exacerbated voice! And then in an instant gets all information specialist. And then such a knowing sweet little grin with Amanda’s comment. And I adore Lee’s reaction to Amanda’s Huck Finn comment. This part of their relationship is so great to watch!

Still liking Lee and Amanda’s connection to each other here. They are so in sync with one another, each taking the blame for what’s happening to Dotty, each concerned, but neither placing blame on the other or upset with the other.
Don’t want to think that Amanda was having a duh! moment with the Huck Finn vs Mickey Finn comment, but do like Lee and Billy’s reactions and just letting it sort of slide by. Both of them showing their understanding and concern for Amanda is awesome.
I think Dotty knows that things are not on the up and up, but is still waiting to see just how far this is going to go. I think she is not pushing back too hard because she is so concerned about Zernoff, whom she hasn’t seen in a bit.

This scene in Billy’s office is the one I was referring to earlier, Iwsod. I think BIlly is hysterical here… trying to hold it all together with occupational small talk about APB’s and such, then blowing his composure completely a moment later. I LOL every time I watch this. I can only imagine what the poor guy has been through and how he has had to bite his tongue all evening until this moment now in the privacy of his office. And your “in a tuxedo?!?” reference is perfect! Yes, when it comes to Lee’s cowboy style, poor Billy is a long-suffering soul. I suspect there were many such reprimands even before The First Time.

Wow – go away for a few weeks and so much SMK goodness to catch up on! I’ll have limited internet access for the next little while, but I was able to sneak away from the family to do a drive by post.

Sweet as it is that Lee and Amanda are taking responsiblity for Dotty getting involved, I don’t see how Lee could have prevented Dotty’s involvement or how Amanda could have stopped Dotty getting in the car. Dotty is just too strong-willed to be restrained if she wanted to do something!
I do enjoy Billy here – telling Lee off (for once!!) and his affection for Amanda.

I agree, Learjet. I think if Dotty really wanted something she’d do her darndest to get it. I think she is of the generation when women were expected to do what they were told. I think she acts accordingly most times, but I think it is by choice, not because she has to. Here, I think she is choosing to show patience – or at least that is how I read her actions – or lack thereof.

I kind of think that a woman of that generation would know exactly how to get what she wanted because she was expected to do as she was told. She would have figured out the perfect way to circumvent the “rules” even as she appeared to be obeying them. Plus Amanda is Dotty’s daughter and that “stubborn/ knowing how to get what you want” quality probably runs in the family.

Yeah, the Huck Finn thing is lame. Maybe it’s one of those moments you have as you get older when you mean to say one thing, but something else comes out. I used to have a colleague who would say the funniest things, e.g. instead of “it’s all above board”, she accidentally said “it’s all under-handed”, “fraternising with the enemy” became “fractionating with the emeny”, and the one that had me in hysterics was when she meant to say “they were going at it hammer and tong” but it came out “they were going at it hammer and tongue.” 😀 (I think this sort of thing is known as a malapropism.)
I assume the guard/s do a walk around the bullpen occasionally to make sure everything’s in order and relieve the monotony of standing in one place for hours on end, or maybe when they are changing the guard? In the context of this episode, the random guard in the bullpen is a lot easier to explain that some other things that have happened or been said. 😉
What’s that thing under Billy’s desk by Amanda’s feet?

It looks like it might not be under Billy’s desk. Actually it looks like the top of a shredder to me.

I have always viewed Amanda’s slip as her trying to stay in spy mode even as it was touching her personal life. She must be very worried about her mother, but she is trying to stay professional. She probably isn’t used to using words like that and so she messed it up. I love it that Lee is sweet and laughs, but doesn’t ridicule and Billy appreciates it too. It kind of reminds me of the trick book slip… but Lee is much kinder here.
When I graduated from college my then fiance took a bunch of us out for dinner and I ordered a beer. I was not much of a beer drinker and somehow I ended up with a Groelche, a rather large bottle. He asked me if I was ok with that big a bottle and I meant to say that I would “nurse it.” Instead, I told him that I would “milk” it. He hasn’t let me forget it to this day. But I wonder if that is what Amanda did here. She tried to use a term that she wasn’t completely familiar with and flubbed it.

Oh, that’s funny, Morley! I can see the connection between nurse and milk. Unfortunately, I think if this was an innocent flub on her part and she recognized it right away, I would have expected her to say to Lee, “Yeah, that’s what I meant to say” or something like that. Instead, she just looks embarrassed and goes right back to Billy as if she is thinking – c’mon, let’s move on people so I can forget about that embarrassing thing I just said. She looks like a deer caught in the headlights when she turns back to Billy.

Maybe, but I think Amanda is like a deer caught in headlights right about now. She has had to slip a bug into her mother’s purse, listen in on her conversations (which embarrassed her in front of Lee with the someone at work comment). Then her mother got taken by the bad guys and now she finds out how much danger she really is in. Amanda is trying to keep her head about her and act the part.
When my daughter does or says something that needs correcting her first response is to say “I know that.” It is a defense mechanism, but she doesn’t sound defensive, she just sounds like she already knew it and its no big deal. I wonder if Amanda’s “I know” is a bit like that. “I know, wrong words. Lets just get back to what has happened to my mother.”

OMG, iwsod! That is hysterical! Thank you for the laugh!
I noticed the armed guard in the background too. I think they’ve always had armed guards there, I don’t remember specifics, but I get the feeling that we’ve seen them. I think we may have seen them in DOA when Amanda shot out the door with the golf ball. We just don’t usually see him when these guys are in Billy’s office. Perhaps it is because it is in the middle of the night?
While I do love that neither Billy nor Lee give the “amateur” vibe to Amanda over her Huck Finn remark, I LOATHE that the script has her say that and that KJ would go along with it at this point. Ugh! This really IMHO makes Amanda sound like less than an amateur. I really don’t like it! Unfortunately, this isn’t the last one of these we have to endure, but I’ll say no more.
Maybe the kids are finally spending some more time with their father? Whatever did happen to Joe after TWWH? Is he back in Estoccia with the PM?
I think Dotty is being patient. I think she understands that Zernoff is not an ordinary citizen and that there may be a need for special treatment. But, I think she does not really trust this guy fully. I think if she did she would have acted differently when Lawrence told her “As I’m sure someone with your sensitivity can understand….” She doesn’t act goofy after that compliment; she just gives him a look that says, nice try, but I’m not going anywhere just yet. Dotty is not buyin’ what he is sellin’!

The “Huck Finn” reference seems a little strange for someone who supposed majored in American Lit in college. 😛
They should have offered Dotty a magazine or newspaper or something. She’s going to get bored waiting.

I think the Huck Finn is either 1) Season 1 Amanda (trying too hard to be an ‘intelligence operative’) or 2) the kind of thing Dotty would say. It just doesn’t fit.
Pity Dotty didn’t have her mobile phone with her. She’d have something to do and been able to text Amanda for help 😀

I’m going to go with thinking that the Huck Finn reference was exactly because she majored in American Lit. Sometimes your brain is thinking one thing, but you just say the thing you’re most used to. Amanda’s life has been much more about Huck Finn than Mickey Finns until recently. When she says “I know that”, I don’t think she’s trying to cover ignorance, but acknowledging her slip of the tongue.
Lee is so cute here, how he lets her down gently by saying “I think” when of course he doesn’t think it, he KNOWS it.
