Where were we? Lee and Amanda would die for each other.. glad they straightened that out! Now they are off to chat with ‘Lana’..
Lana meets waiting Lee and Amanda.
Lana: I rub the Bulgarian Ambassador the right way and he forgets I’m there…
[Ohhhh Bulgarians! Not Russians! Was Viktor in The Mole a Bulgarian diplomat? or do we not find out.. and.. Has Lee learned how to say Freeze in Bulgarian?! ]
[LOL umm Lana seems to not mind Amanda joining them.. I would have thought she would question at least who she is lol.. maybe Lee has told her about his partner ]
…This time I heard him make a deal…
…to buy the Barnstorm list. Is that the list of the family Lee??!
[Lana asks in almost an accusatory way.. like you’ve been busted.. IMHO of course.. I am relieved to see a little of this.. because it’s just a list that shouldn’t have been possible to make! If I was on the list I’d be pointing it out!]
Lee: I wish it wasn’t true… but yeah it is.
[Lee is IMHO regretful and chastened.. but I can also see this is open to a whole lot of interpretation soooo go ahead and share what you make of it if you wish!
I’m probably seeing what I want to see!]
Lana: How many names were on the list?
Lee: I never got a good look at it. It’s probably complete now did you hear who Filikov was talking to?
[Umm so Lee doesn’t know how many people are on his complete list? huh?]
[I’m sorry I can’t let that pun go by… ‘I never got a good look at it’?!!!! whahahahhahaaaa!!! That’s hilarious!!! Oh Lee you cheeky thing you!!! He was looking right through them from Ste Maire to Washington DC
tee hee….
BTW- so not only did Lee not destroy the contact lenses he actually didn’t even know if the list on them was complete? Aie.. the whole premise of this plot makes no sense… Oh I can’t wait to hear what you guys make of all this! Maybe I’m way off base here! ]
Lana: A guy named Brody.
Lee: Brody???!! You’re sure it was Brody?
[Oh dear.. a strong immediate reaction from Lee.. not a Brody fan huh.. ]
Lana: I’m positive. Look, I’ve been here too long already. I have to leave.
[Lana leaves.. Umm.. gee Lee, Amanda – could have thanked her for getting the information to them!!! Oh dear! Good for Lana.. she took a risk coming and sharing this info.. and her name is on that list..I like Lana!]
I guess the lack of thank you is explained by the look of dread on Lee’s face..
Amanda: Who’s Brody?
Lee: They call him the Death Broker because that’s what he deals in. He’s arranged assassinations, arms deals, coups. A professional middleman open to anything if the price is right.
Amanda: How does he do it?
Lee: Simple. He either buys or blackmails the people he needs. People with position, contacts [whahaha!!! the puns are coming thick and fast!] , power…
Amanda: Well if you know it’s Brody, why don’t you bring him in?
[I really think that these two are standing much too far away from each other while they have this conversation ]
Lee: Even if we could find him, which is doubtful, we couldn’t hold him more than 30 seconds with the hearsay that we’ve got. No, we need more on Brody, a lot more.
[yeah like who gave the list to Brody.. that would be good to find out!]
Amanda seems to be taking a very close assessment of Lee’s face here while he talks.. lol.. I think it’s about how he is doing and that she really needs to get him to rest..
Amanda: Look, Mr Melrose probably has everything set up at your place by now. We ought to get you back there…
[Awh.. a little comforting touch on his lapel.. she does like Lee’s lapels ]
…You’re not gonna do anybody any good if you fall in your face.
[Lee closes his eyes.. he does seem to be fading a bit.. a rest even for a little bit could be just what a non double crossing doctor orders!]
Lee: Yeah.
Amanda: Come on.
Together Lee and Amanda leave.. I’m a little concerned at Lee driving his car in this condition.. especially alone.. but.. there’s no mention of it.. and I’m thinking too much
Next thing, we see an exterior shot of Lee’s apartment block. LOL it seems Lee has changed floors yet again to keep the baddies on their toes.. he’s no longer up high.. he’s now on the second level ha!
Lee’s on the phone.. and not resting.. But his hair is looking especially good not so flat!
Lee: Well keep looking, damn it. And call Butera over at Langley, he may have something that we don’t…
[We see Amanda anxiously watching Lee not rest]
…. Well wake him up!
Lee hangs up the phone.
Amanda approaches Lee.
Amanda: You know you really have to get some rest.
Lee: Oh not now, Amanda.
Amanda: Yes now… [whoo hoo! for Amanda – that’s forceful!](more quietly): Please.
Lee: Ugh…
Lee goes to lay on the couch but Amanda stops him haaa..
Cute how Lee kind of pauses like he can’t believe he has to go to bed. like he’s a little boy
Amanda: Not on the couch, in the bedroom where you. belong. Come on.
[Lee must be really unwell.. such a provocative statement of Amanda’s hooo haaaaa..]
Amanda still has Lee by the arm and directs him to his bedroom while Lee continues to protest but still head in that direction anyway
Lee: Amanda, please. I don’t have time to rest.
Amanda: Don’t argue with me.
Lee: There are things that need to be done here.
Amanda: Shhhh, come on.
Lee lets out a massive breath. lol guess the fight is over
They enter Lee’s bedroom..
Amanda: You’re gonna be much more comfortable. And this is really where you belong.
[Hmm Amand does enjoy saying that I think haaaa!]
Lee sits on the bed, nursing his injured arm, and Amanda picks up his feet to help them up onto the bed too..
[LOL at how Lee seems to lay on only half the bed and his calves/feet are hanging over the edge.. for a tall guy he needs a longer bed!]
Amanda: All right get your feet up. Come on.
Lee: I am. Uhh.
Amanda: I think you probably ought to take this. medication. [Ugh!!]
Lee takes the pills from Amanda..
puts his hand to his mouth.. lol he gives her a look here –
could be a look saying – there’s no point in arguing with you so I’ll just go along. But.. maybe there is another meaning.. ahem.. we’ll see!
… Here you go. There you go. Now I’ll pour you some water.
…Okay. Okay? Alright.
Lee drinks the water.. giving Amanda another look!
[lol given his posture he seems to slurp a little tee hee. Amanda takes the opportunity to wipe his mouth cheek chin or whateverhowgbihagboabowb]
Lee: There now, are you satisfied, huh?
[ah Lee.. that’s what this little exercise is about. Making sure Amanda is satisfied
It’s not about resting or feeling better or any such nonsense
]
Amanda: Yeah. Satisfied…
(Amanda reaches over to feel and stroke tenderly the bump on Lee’s forehead. Lee lets her
)
…That’s really a bump.
Me thinks Lee lets out a bit of a groan here as Amanda is err assessing his injury
Just at that moment.. they are interrupted..
Soooo for the moment.. I’m going to pause here everyone! Hello hello!!! Thanks for reading!!! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!!!
Again, she sits on his bed, like she did in the hospital – a very personal, private, and intimate space. I love the hand holding and how she strokes his hair. (Contented sigh)

Hi All! Sorry I’ve been MIA. Been so busy!!! I am going to try and catch up today, so there may be a few posts coming your way, from me 🙂
Anyway, I’ve always loved this scene! Lee and Amanda obviously care about each other very much at this point… and really, who else is going to make sure that Lee gets the rest he needs to get, other than Amanda? She cares about him and is worried for his health and more, and not just in a partner sort of way 😉 I try not to look at it as her mothering him, but just trying to take care of her man (I know, I know, he’s not really her man yet…heehee) because she knows he isn’t going to do it for himself! Booooo them being interrupted, just as it was getting good!!

Mothering didn’t even cross my mind. There was at least one similar scene on Hart To Hart where Jennifer uses the same gesture with Jonathan and they’re married with no kids!
I think “mothering” is just Lee’s way of protesting because he hates being forced to rest and doesn’t want to admit that he actually appreciates Amanda’s caring.

I agree that Amanda is in somewhat of a mothering mode here, but at this point that may be the safest route to go in her mind. For as much as has been said, there is still a lot that has not been said between these two. They have no problem being in each other spaces, they’ve got the eye speak thing working, and there is the constant touching. Their bodies and unconscious minds have been communicating quite well for a while, but actual words as to where they are have yet to come forth. I can’t remember who it was to started it, but there was that whole Amanda having everything in a tupperware. I think someone came in and rearranged all the lids and moved things around and she is a bit discombobulated. She’s working at reorganizing, but it’s a work in progress.
A couple of things about this list. Lee indicates that he doesn’t know if the list has everyone’s names on it. Goldberg mentions that you need a comparative microscope to read what’s on it, so Lee wouldn’t have been able to read it while he was still out of the country. Unless he had time to pack a microscope. I would assume that he was wanting to read it first to see who was on the list. We never get told who put the names on the lenses. If Lee did then he most certainly would have done away with them. There’s also the possibility that it’s all in a code even when the lenses are together. Also, we don’t know who may have seen the lenses prior to Lee obtaining them so he may need them to check in with or warn those family members who could be in danger.
Some of this is similar to the first Mission Impossible movie when they were trying to steal a list of non-official covers. Maybe they took part of their plot line from SMK. Or most likely this kind of thing has happened in the spy community before.

Lana is definitely dropping an accusation and who can blame her. She’s probably thinking what idiot put all our names on a list looks pointedly at Lee Stetson
Lee’s batchelor pad decor makes me laugh….sooooo 80’s. He needs to lie further up the bed because he’s over hanging a tad
In the bedroom where you belong…….oooh such unintentional innuendo lol

Hi iwsod, aw, so nice to be missed and thought of! Hoping I get caught up by the time you move on to the next episode!! I am soooo glad that I didn’t just say, “oh, well, I’ll never catch up with the ka-zillion responses” and just skip to the present. This has been a wonderful walk!

I think Lana is very pretty. I remember being completely jealous of her hair when this aired. Heck I still think she has pretty hair and a pretty face. Not crazy about her choice in make-up though. She also seems pretty intelligent and/or street smart, so not one of Lee’s typical floozies. I do think Lana’s tone is accusatory and Lee is feeling a bit chastened. I suspect he may have worked hard to convince Lana to help him, and he probably assured her that she would be able to stay safe as long as she did what Lee told her and didn’t act suspicious on her part. Lana’s probably always been a little fearful that she would get found out. I like Lana too, iwsod.
Wow, Lee and Amanda are standing very close to one another. I guess they are tucked into a hidey-hole space so they can talk to Lana without being seen. Must be nice – hope you enjoyed that, Amanda! Oh, what I would have given if Lee had just rested his forehead for second or two on Amanda’s shoulder!
Love this scene, but can I just say that Amanda’s wiping Lee’s face is a bit too mommy-ish behavior? If she would do something like that for one of her sons, she should not be doing it to Lee. And Lee really needs to get better decorative pillows for his bed. What is up with those shiny things? I guess even 80s house fashions were atrocious as well. My mother went through a mauve phase in the 80s. I shudder remembering it.

Oh yes, Amanda is in full on mother mode… maybe all of her other modes are broken??? Or is that a bit more disassociation??? LOL

Oh groan…can you please graph the dissociation function? Maybe then I can understand it. 😀

LOL what’s this I see? a challenge?! tee hee..
I’ll give it a go! Dissociation is really just about disconnection.
It’s about the parts of someone being separate and disconnected.. It can be anything that’s disconnected.. thoughts.. emotions.. different parts of a person’s identity or roles.
I was saying here that Lee’s body is disconnected from his mind and purpose at the moment – because he is needing to resist what his body needs to do what he needs to do.
In this context that’s all I was referring to with dissociation.
It can be a coping (defense) mechanism to get you through a challenge of some kind.. It could even be helpful in some situations..if it’s not long lasting or too severe..
I’m thinking it’s similar to compartmentalisation – but with more emphasis on the disconnection rather than the separation. Though I can see they could be used interchangeably half the time and it wouldn’t matter 🙂
Dissociation in it’s severe form requires mental health care.. but we are no where near this end of the spectrum in smk…
Not even when Amanda got all her hair cut off and bought a fugly new wardrobe!
Clear as mud?

And in light of this description of disassociation I would like to suggest that Amanda is experiencing some disassociation of her own. I kind of think she has been in “mother mode” for so long due to the choice that she had to make between her kids and her marriage when Joe chose to move his life to Africa to help the people of Estocia that she has somewhat lost touch with any other way of communicating care and love. Its not a total loss for her, I don’t think she is in need of therapy, but I do think being present as a woman that is experiencing attraction and love for a man is not a response she easily exhibits, especially in a circumstance like this. I think she easily would if Lee would open the topic for discussion, but until he does she will default to mother mode. Just my two cents.

Loving all these comments and how they all point out all of the things that are screaming at everyone except Lee and Amanda, and I think that is because somehow the two of them are just able to be 100% present for each other in what is going on at the moment, and I think that is remarkable especially because there has got to be so much radar up between them. I mean, they have got to be reading each other for minute details because their relationship is progressing with every moment and yet they are able to be in each moment here and fulfill what needs to be done for the other. Even though Amanda needs Lee to be ok, she understands his need to take care of his “family” and even though Lee’s need to be on top of this investigation is demanding that he put his needs aside he is willing (even though he grouses) to do as Amanda is asking.
I do love how close they stand to each other. It is almost as if Lee is leaning on her. I think that is wonderfully important because it is as if Lee knows he can trust her, he wants to trust her, he needs to trust her. He has acknowledged his need for relationship and he has chosen Amanda… ahhh. How lovely. 🙂

Agreed. I noticed that too. He’s definitely ‘leaning.’ lol…Just made me think of the movie “While You Were Sleeping.”
I’m also realizing that Lee’s probably coming down (energy-wise) from that trip to St Marie and whatever happened prior to when we saw him.

Oh heck. love this! and love this movie!
Lee’s wish to rest his head on Amanda’s shoulder.. or have a bit of a hug or some comfort here just oozes out of him.. come on Lee have the conversation and you may get what you want 😉 but then.. I guess so far there hasn’t been an appropriate time and place for it yet?

Not much to add that hasn’t been said. The closeness between them is definitely one of the highlights of this episode (I’ll also agree about BB’s acting.) I like that they don’t seem to care who else is around (i.e., Lana). Honestly, Lee may not be feeling well enough to care. He’s just glad Amanda’s there. I wonder if one of Francine’s wise cracks would faze him at this point? I don’t think he’d let anyone else talk him into the bedroom, except Amanda (hmm…that came at worse than I intended!). Well, talk him ‘out of working,’ I guess would be more to the point. Maybe, Billy. And only if he ordered him to.

Ooookay, so now the ambassador is Bulgarian… It started with the (East) Germans, we got a whiff of Russian, the script says Romanian, and Lana says Bulgarian! What a mish-mash of an episode. It’s like no-one behind the scenes was talking to anyone else working on the production. “What country? Who cares, just come up with an Eastern Bloc country, any Eastern bloc country will do. No one’s really taking any notice anyway. They just want to see L&A get together…” Little did they know, all these years later, a dedicated few would be poring over every SMK moment with a fine tooth comb. The comb is a lucky comb of course, and missing a couple of teeth 😉
Lana is a real 80’s blonde stereotype but she does seem to have a good brain. I agree with what someone else said that she could have been one of Lee’s women, but I like to think he didn’t bed every woman he met. That would just be creepy… Donald Trump creepy… ughhh! 😯
Meanwhile he and Amanda are standing very close together, in each other’s personal space. I think they’re at the point where they don’t recognise personal space around each other anymore. Sharing personal space has always been a natural thing for them, now it is just more obvious and they are both cognisant of the implications. 😉
Love Amanda’s concern, and Lee’s natural stubbornness. That must’ve been a good hit on the head, otherwise I’m sure he wouldn’t be objecting to Amanda leading him to the bedroom. 😀
Ah, finally, a bedroom scene… of sorts. Okay, even if she’s not going to unbutton his shirt, at least take his shoes off! I haven’t watched this scene in a while but I am pretty sure I remember being bugged by the fact that he has his shoes on. Might check it out this scene again later on if I get a chance. Anyone watching as we go can confirm the shoes are on?
Getting back to Amanda leading him to the bedroom, while she is obviously concerned about his health and well-being, I think she is hoping to enjoy a few minutes of alone time with him as well. Although they’re not ready to “go there” yet, I think the fact that they are both again comfortable in each other’s space in his bedroom speaks volumes about how relaxed and accepting they are now about moving forward with their relationship.

I have decided to ignore the dreadful plot (which is hard), Lee’s mysterious injury (I still can’t and never could get how he was injured so badly) and just enjoy the fun. I actually think BB’s acting is brilliant throughout this episode, I do get annoyed that no one else seems to worry about the poor civilians. (on that stupid list )

Totally agree, Michele. Despite the shocking plot, I still love this episode. BB just carries us through all the plot issues with his acting.
{Note to self. Don’t be tempted to become a member of a “family” of an agent. You won’t get looked after if things go wrong}

It took me a bit to figure out the injury — I kept thinking he’d collapsed from blood loss from the injury to his arm. If you watch the fight in the parking garage at the beginning, the bad guy slams Lee’s head against the side of the car really hard. He looks temporarily dazed when they’re trying to get the lenses, but then adrenaline kicks in long enough to get out of there before he loses consciousness in the car. He then seems to go in and out of consciousness in the car and coming into the ER, looks like he’s fully lost consciousness again when the doctors are examining him, and doesn’t regain consciousness according to Billy or Amanda for fifteen hours. That’s a heck of a head injury.
And concussions and head injuries really can run a weird gamut (which makes them awesome for writing!) What looks like a minor bump on the head can be more serious as we learned when Natasha Richardson had her skiing accident. Nowadays doctors are even more cautious with head injuries because of all the new concussion research, but even in the 1980s they were super overprotective.
Case in point: I hit my head on the dashboard in a car accident in 1990 and although they didn’t think I had a concussion at the time (today would indicate a different diagnosis). I had to do a CAT scan and an EEG a couple weeks later to see how I was doing. Plus they had a fit when I tried to walk to my aunt’s room on another ward without supervision (The nurse says “You could fall.” I was thinking “I’m eight — I know how to pick myself up and not cry for my mommy!”) I wasn’t allowed to go back to school for a week and couldn’t take gym class for I think a month.
Also in the late eighties, a book came out on the Canadian ski team and the coach mentioned that they had developed an unofficial rule: Your first concussion, you take some time off. Your second concussion, you change sports. And your third, you need to get out of sport entirely.
Today they’ve learned a lot more about concussions and post-concussion syndrome, where patients have complications sometimes lasting for months. It’s not as mild as the old shows make it look. I’m impressed SMK actually took it as serious as they did, especially with the “Family Friendly” restrictions that were on them at the time.

The 80’s were definitely a more innocent age. I really don’t think there was any innuendo meant (I could be wrong of course). Amanda behaves more like a nurse/mother imho. But I agree with you Cindy, in Iswod’s walk, it is hilarious.

Agree – she is very much like a nurse/mother in this scene. Lee must be feeling bad to let that pass. But then he missed out on having a mother for much of his childhood so maybe it feels good?

Anyone else look at Lana and think – she might have been one of Lee’s type of girls in the bad old days? (but at least she’s part of the “family” nowadays).
Iwsod, on behalf of road safey researchers everywhere, I salute your concern for Lee-on-the-road. That man should not be behind a wheel. I’m also concerned for Lee’s neck in that awkward position on that pillow. Given his probable whiplash injury with that head injury….OK, I’m getting lost here; move on, Learjet 🙂 .
Lee is a reluctant invalid. Still grumpy and ungracious, but much more co-operative than in the days of “that damn duck”. Lee is very comfortable about Amanda entering his bedroom, and so is she (times have change from that nightgown scene. Poor guy, he is in a bad way, but it’s lovely to see how he is able to let go and be vulnerable around Amanda. Which, given his training, is remarkable.

Haha, Learjet! Great point! After seeing, sitting with, and touching Amanda while she was (most probably bra-less) and in a somewhat flimsy albeit long nightie going into his bedroom fully clothed with agents in his family room is no big deal.

Hiya Learjet – lol loved your road researchers comment 🙂 glad to support road safety! 🙂 haaaaa
lol yes good call.. comparing Lee here to Lee in that damn duck episode is very enlightening!
Well said Learjet! He is in a bad way.. and yet he still maintains a strength which demands he continue for the sake of the barnstorm family!
So true ‘remarkable’ is spot on! It really is massive this change in Lee… Lee is vulnerable with Amanda – and this gives him the strength to continue! Opening up to Amanda helps Lee to be even stronger and more resilient IMHO… Take that agency- who didn’t teach Lee about people and lets it’s people go pretty darn easily.. What Lee and Amanda now have is way better than anything the agency could have thought up..
When we met Lee he was trying hard to be hard – he was wearing his scarecrow persona and a whole lot of protections- but deep down he was troubled… and because he couldn’t be vulnerable and rely on anyone this made him IMHO weaker… he was reliant on fleeting, superficial pick me ups ahem.. Inner Lee was on edge..
Now – he is reliant on something that’s steadfast and trustworthy, and that’s going to last ( so long as they can stay alive!).. and Inner Lee is much more at peace..
Oh dear.. iwsod rambles into a character anaylsis… It’s a wonderful story this – one of the best parts of smk (IMHO) that genuine loving relationships overall make you stronger!! 🙂 oh and also that being a genuine loving man is extremely swoony! Much more swoony that petulant moody Lee of season 1 (or child/ teenager Lee as Raffie would say – Miss you Raffie!!!!!).
