2/19 Season Three, Episode 20: Dead Men Leave No Trails–Scarecrow and Mrs King

Billy stops everyone from leaving.
Billy: Just a moment, people. I am happy to announce that Mrs. Zawoski gave birth, a couple of hours ago, to a healthy baby boy.
[Oh hooray! the agency is acknowledging one of their agents who has had a baby??!!! Why this is modern stuff! A woman who works having a baby!!!
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000245945_thumb
Everyone is amazed at this modern miracle.
I must say it’s lovely to see Lee joyful at the birth of any baby!]
Billy: Which, which no doubt explains Jack Zawoski’s absence,
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000248348_thumb
[You mean Billy was announcing the birth of Agent Jack Zawoski’s baby? Oh boooooo!!!! What was I thinking! SMK isn’t that progressive! I guess it’s good they have two female agents at the table in this meeting.. though ahem. they don’t seem to get names! and ahem they don’t seem to get allocated any jobs!!!]
Billy continues: …however… Zawoski was scheduled to give the department orientation lecture to the new agents this afternoon at one o’clock.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000252752_thumb
We cut to Lee starting to look uncomfortable down the end of the table!
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000255155_thumb
…Now, let’s see who’s light.
Billy opens his folder.. and Hamilton and McCreary avoid eye contact with Billy.
Lean on Goodlean Billy! He’s good! 😉
There’s silence..
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000262962_thumb
Billy finds just the person for the job!

Lee: Uhhh, look, Billy, uhhh… heh… You know I can’t…
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000268168_thumb
…I would really love to, but I have that err… that report that you wanted on the possible Gaddafi hit…
[who is that wanting to facilitate it? or prevent it?!]
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000273373_thumb
Billy
: Oh, that’s alright. The lecture’s yours.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000273973_thumb
Lee: Ohh.
Billy: That’s it, people.
Everyone gets up to leave. Lee gets up faster to prevent Billy from leaving just yet.
Lee: Wait. Wait. Hold it. Hold it. What’s it? Billy! Billy.
What is it?
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000280580_thumb
Billy: You’re it.
Lee: I don’t do speeches, you know that.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000283383_thumb
Billy: You’ll manage. Check Zawoski’s office, he’s probably got notes somewhere.
Lee: Awh. Notes?
No, wait, hold on a second.  Notes? Come on, the guy has given the same speech every other Monday for the past two decades. I heard it myself ten years ago …‘til I dozed off.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000300400_thumb
Billy: Well I hope you’ll be awake when you complete it.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000303803_thumb
Lee
: Ugh.
Billy isn’t waiting around for Lee to agree. Get on with it Scarecrow!
Lee gives the back of Billy one last glare.. and mumbles something maybe ‘great!’ .. BTW I think that shirt is not ‘great’ ugh.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000305584_thumb

The scene ends here.
What’s going on here? I wonder.. is Billy trying to stretch Lee here – so he can begin to learn some more managerial or executive type skills? i.e. speech giving?

And if this orientation is for new agents. Will Amanda be there? is she going to finally be an ‘agent’???!!! and get rid of that flipping guest pass??!!!

Before I move on..
This agent in Saved by the Bells:

Do you think this is the same agent sitting next to Lee?
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000253753
I’m not sure.. and it’s not credited.. What do you all think?

Moving on to some shopping..
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000312712

Amanda hurries out of a hardware store, getting into her car.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000315515
That blouse is very umm puffy in the sleeves.. not sure I’m a fan of that. But still, love the colour so can’t complain too much!
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000317517
Amanda starts the car, and we cut to a car speeding in to the car park. So fast, Amanda begins to back up not seeing him. A car horn blows. Amanda’s car gets hit by the speeding car.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000324524
Ouchie. They hit hard!
We see Amanda take a calming breath.

Amanda: Great! [ha not unlike Lee’s reaction a moment ago to the speech!]
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000325925
Amanda turns off the ignition, removes her seatbelt, and reaches into her glove box. She removes her insurance documents, and begins reading aloud to herself.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000331731
Amanda: “What to do if you have an accident. Stay calm.”  Great advice. No wonder this insurance is so expensive.
(haaa! I love it! )
Amanda grabs a pen, exits her car and meets Sallee between the vehicles, then glances at the damage.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000338538
Amanda
: Oh, I’m so sorry! Oh! I didn’t see you, but I have insurance, so-
[Hey! it’s el pink shirt dude. Uh oh. ]
Sallee: Ah, don’t, don’t be sorry. You might be just what we’re looking for.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000342542
Amanda: What?
Sallee: Rupert Andretti, friends call me Crash…
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000345545
…Maybe you’ve heard of my cousin, Mario?..
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000349115
[At this we see Amanda react – ugh!  A line. I don’t have time for this. Don’t hit on me!! at least.. that’s what I think she is thinking. anyone? ]
…I run the demolition derby down at the Speedway, and I think you may be the talent we’ve been hunting for.
[Smooth. Is he trying to come on to Amanda?]
Amanda: Excuse me, but I’m in a terrible hurry. I have to catch a train…
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000352886
[we get a good look at what Amanda is holding here. It really is about what to do if you have been in an accident!]
…I know that’s an awful excuse, but if we could just go inside the store and call the police?
[Amanda turns pointing at the store, and we see the moment police are mentioned Rupert/Sallee reacts. But.. maybe Amanda doesn’t notice because she’s too preoccupied with everything?]
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000359926
Sallee (much more subdued and no longer trying to be upbeat and charm her): Ahh, ah… seriously, miss, none of that’s necessary. The way I came tearing around that corner, I could’ve qualified for the Indy 500 myself. 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000365331
Amanda: I’ll say. You were goin’ awful fast. 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000367334
Sallee: Well, yeah I was, and I’ll take full responsibility for it.  (Sallee pulls $300 out of his wallet) 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000370737
Sallee’s voice: So why don’t we just straighten this out here? You take this, I’m sure this is gonna cover it.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000372539
Amanda
: Oh no, uh-uh… no, that’s too much… I… because I have insurance.
[Amanda it was his fault! Or is it just me who thinks that? Amanda is being too darn nice IMHO!]
Sallee: Didn’t you just say that you were in a hurry?
Amanda: Well, yes, but it wasn’t entirely your fault!
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000379145[Sure it was Winking smile ]
Sallee: Look. You don’t want your insurance premium to go up, and I certainly don’t want the police asking me why I haven’t been carrying any all this time, so… We’ll call it even.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000386553
Amanda
: Awh.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000388555
Sallee
: All right. Have a good trip. Don’t miss your train.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000390557
Amanda
: Alright…  I think I’m getting the best end of this.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000392359
Salle gets in his car and backs up.
LOL at all the loud squeaking as the cars separate.
Sallee: No problem.
Amanda: It’s not too bad.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000400567(Sallee waves out his window at Amanda and reverses out of the parking lot. Amanda smiles good-bye.
3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000405772
She writes down Sallee’s license plate number, shakes her head and sighs. 3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000406773
[LOL could she have made it anymore obvious that she was writing down his licence plate?! ]3.20 DEAD MEN LEAVE NO TRAILS.avi_000408174
[Looks like his car had very little damage!]
Amanda: Ugh.

Amanda gets in her car and heads off to the train station I guess. I’ll pause here.. any thoughts you’d all like to share? bye!

  1. I love Amanda’s straight hair and long bangs, I never cared for the curly look…That 80’s frizzy fro just bugs me.

    • And because I have poker straight hair, I prefer the curly look (though not the extremes we went to in the 80s – Gosh, I am surprised we didn’t spontaneously combust with all the product we sprayed in our hair)

      • Consider yourself lucky to have straight hair… I have curly hair and it’s a pain sometimes lol. And yes I went through thst 80s frizz, too (because when I was younger my hair was straight). I do prefer the down look for amanda vs like she had it in the tag of ‘J Edgar’s Ghost’ .

  2. I am thinking that Billy is trying to get Lee to take on responsibilities of a more sr agent, hense giving him the speech giving task. Maybe he did see what was going on with Lee and Amanda in the last episode and sees the writing on the wall even though Lee hasn’t made that jump yet. The man, Lee, is going to have to settle down. After all he just cosigned for a loan with a suburban housewife 😉

And, I am glad that Amanda got the licence late number. I wonder if she recognized that the man who hit her didn’t want the police called in so instead of aggravating him further, she took the path of least resistance, but covered herself, too, by taking the number. She is a smart woman.

    • I know my assumption is far less romantic than yours, but I just thought Billy needed a speech giver and Lee was the only one available. It sounds to me like an assignment nobody wants. More like drudge-work than a step up the admin ladder.

Very true about Amanda. With what we know about her past, Sallee probably thinks he’s getting the better end of the deal. I wonder what would have happened if it was Lee backing out?

  3. I’ve never liked Sallee here at all. I’ve always felt he was trying to get Amanda to accept the blame for something that was really his fault. He’s implying her driving was reckless in spite of the fact that he is the one who came flying around the corner. And if it really was an attempt at humor, it is wholly misplaced. Who wants to hear jokes that they drive like Andretti when they have just been in an accident? Nope, not a fan! I’m so glad Amanda kept her wits about her and didn’t get railroaded by him.

      I agree! booooo!!!! Jerk!

And if it really was an attempt at humor, it is wholly misplaced.

I agree it was overall a very awkward attempt. What was his plan when he started with the charm and maybe letting her take the blame? Was he going to say no worries bye and not give her his details?

Who wants to hear jokes that they drive like Andretti when they have just been in an accident? Nope, not a fan!

I suspect Sallee is lacking in social skills.. maybe it’s one reason he ended up becoming an assassin.. so far it seems he works alone!

  4. I will join the throngs who say he isn’t hitting on her but he is trying to ooze charm in a way he thinks American women fall for, probably from watching too many movies. I enjoy the fact that despite her state of mind with being in a rush, etc, Amanda doesn’t get embarrassed and shy the way she might have done in Season One, she just firmly shuts him down and moves along. I think it’s not only because she’s a more confident person now, but also because she watched Lee try these exact same tricks for years as a softening technique and recognizes it instantly for what it is. And once you’ve been romanced, even just a little bit by Lee, wouldn’t any of us do the same. “Nice try buddy, but I’ve seen the best and you ain’t it.”

I love that! He flubs it badly huh.. it’s way over the top and ridiculous.. me thinks this assassin didn’t tend to try and charm people to do his job, instead he just snuck around!

Love this observation clagjanet! Go Amanda!! she is definitely more assertive. though I confess I did still wish she wasn’t too quick to take her blame. I think it was all his fault. way too fast bad Sallee Rupert Steve Andretti whoever the heck he is!

  5. Love Billy in this scene, but not loving Lee or his beige outfit…he needs some bright red in his life.

I vote no on the question of that woman being the same agent as in SBTBells. I don’t think the face shape is the same.

Hmm, not sure that I think he is trying to come on to Amanda. If I hadn’t seen him get supposedly blown up in BA two years ago, I might think he was, but I think he’s just trying to make small talk and make light of the situation. Amanda is having none of it. She is in a hurry!

I do think it is his fault, but in my experience, anytime a person backing up is in a crash, it is almost always blamed on the person backing up – meaning if the police were called, she’d get ticketed. He might also, but I don’t think Amanda would get let off – at least not in the States.

And I really like Amanda’s hair in this scene – it is a bit flatter. I guess that just makes it a bit more modern looking.

    Like

    • She might not get ticketed, but her insurance would have to foot the bill for damage to his car as well as hers, and her payments would go up. He, on the other hand, would get ticketed for not carrying liability insurance. So, it’s financially a good deal for both to settle it the way they did, but a bit under the table.

    • BJo, you’ve taken the words right out of my mouth (or should I say fingers)? I also prefer Amanda’s less teased, more natural hair. It reminds me of the nightgown scene in ALLA 🙂
And I love watching Lee ducking and diving (almost literally) in this scene. And so glad that Billy isn’t manipulated and pushes Lee into this role. Just because you’re the Agency’s “top agent”, it doesn’t mean you have to do some of the boring/scary/mundane tasks. Go Billy!

Hi everyone and Hi BJo! Sorry I don’t have time to respond to everyone but have been enjoying hearing your thoughts.

Re the Question: Is he coming on to Amanda?
I’m thinking he tried flirting with her to charm her first.. but that didn’t work.. and that Amanda thought he was hitting on her and shut it down fast.
I don’t think he was going to ask her out or anything, he was being flirty, playful and friendly..
Yes, given he is suppose to be dead, I don’t think he was intending on taking Amanda out for a date either 🙂

Yeah I remember bits of this episode.. the major plot points, but none of the details!

  6. I love how everyone is trying to avoid looking at Billy so as not to get chosen to give the orientation. This is a rare thing for Lee to be light on the case load.

It’s interesting that Lee was given the Q Bureau at the beginning of this season and we’ve barely seen him in it. We know that he put up a fuss about not wanting it and that it would be more work. He was given something with more responsibility and possibly more administrative work, but maybe he’s been avoiding it and this is Billy’s way of bringing him back in.

I don’t think the agent in SBTB and the one next to Lee in the conference room are the same person.

I, too, did not feel that Sallee was trying to hit on Amanda. I felt more as if he were trying to deflect or distract so as not to make a big deal out of the accident. Considering the opening you’d think this guy would try to be a bit more under the radar and not speeding through a parking lot. Way to call attention to yourself.

I live in a state that requires “no fault” insurance and basically you exchange information, but the damage is covered by your own insurance company. But most states are not like that. I’m moving soon to a state that doesn’t have that and am anxious to compare the difference in insurance rates.

  7. I am in the camp that doesnt think that Sallee was hitting on Amanda (nor do I think she thought she was getting hit on), he just needed a cover for his true identity and probably just used the first thing that came into his mind. He might be a nascar fan, who knows?

Am I the only one who really doesnt care what Lee wears, to me he looks good in everything haha. I actually like Amanda in red, too.

I also wonder about Lee’s happiness about the baby announcement, we never saw how old Lee would have reacted, I am sure he would have been cordial and polite, maybe the agent was someone he knew? it has been implied that the agency is like a family, so it’s very fitting that Lee would be happy for something like that.

  8. I think its interesting Iswod, that you feel that Amanda is being hit on. I didn’t really get that vibe watching it, I just thought he was being polite and friendly and that it was lucky for her, given that people can be very aggressive after an accident. (Of course now I know the plot, I could say something else but wont.)
However, your comment did make me think of the Artful Dodger who did hit on Amanda after a car incident so perhaps you are right.

    • Regarding Amanda being hit on- I didn’t think he was hitting on Amanda. I thought he gave a bit of a flirt a try, and Amanda thought she was being hit on.. but he was never intending to ask her out. it was just a flirt to get out of he situation. lol I guess it depends what we think being ‘hit on means’ – is that just some flirty banter? I’m thinking it’s asking someone out. or have I got that wrong?

However, your comment did make me think of the Artful Dodger who did hit on Amanda after a car incident so perhaps you are right.

  9. Ha! I love the nod to the Indy 500. I read that this episode aired in March 1986. Strangely, I recall watching it during the summer, while visiting my dad and the episode was new to me. Regardless of when it aired, Mario Andretti came in second place in 1985 and second to last place in 1986. I wonder if Sallee (‘Rupert’) might have accidentally jinxed his ‘cousin Mario’? I attended my first Indy 500 in 2015, which was excellent! It’s worth seeing at least once.

What a coincidence that Amanda would get hit by a man the CIA or who ever thought that they had terminated! Why would he be in DC of all places in the world? I think I could find somewhere more remote to hide out at! How does this play into Lee’s orientation?

I always wondered how Amanda thought that she could get to the hardware store, get the fuses, and to the train in time when Dottie said they were on the verge of missing it. It’s convenient that Amanda always seems to have someone to take her boys out of town and Dottie can go with them!

I do remember that this is one of my favorite episodes, especially the tag, but I’ll say no more and enjoy the walk 🙂

    • Ok, the fuse is a bit of a contrivance but seriously, they have used almost all the others;-). Of course Dr Kruger (as I think of him) has to be in DC and run into Amanda’s car. Both the car and the woman are magnets for evil doers and the combination is lethal

Agree Iwsod that it is good to see Lee genuinely interested in and happy at the announcement of the birth of a baby. Perhaps it might even get him thinking… 😉 Actually, maybe it will get him thinking even more about the long-term implications of a relationship with Amanda!
Meanwhile, I’m trying to ignore the fact that Lee seems to be intent upon out-beiging the beigest person in the office (which is probably Duffy). Although now that I look at it again, the colour of that jacket is more like putty – aka beige’s dull cousin. :/ Sheesh, that outfit is just too boring for the Fashion Police cells. Just go home and change, Lee.
Is it interesting that Amanda is talking about “catching a train”. In TFT it was Dean who was catching the train and Amanda just seemed to be his dogsbody, stuck in a rut with her life and going nowhere fast. Yes, I know she’s racing to catch the train so Jamie can get his science project fixed, but I like to think there’s it also has a tie-in to the first episode of SMK. I’m stretching I know, but at the JWWM blog we do like to make something out of virtually nothing – it adds to the fun! 😀

I guess they refer to a hit by Gaddafi. According to the eps first airing date (March 31, 1986) it could be the ‘1986 Berlin discotheque boming’:

On April 5, 1986 three people were killed and around 230 injured when La Belle discothèque was bombed in West Berlin. The entertainment venue was commonly frequented by United States soldiers, and two of the dead and 79 of the injured were American servicemen…

…Libya was accused by the US government of sponsoring the bombing, and US President Ronald Reagan ordered retaliatory strikes on Tripoli and Benghazi in Libya ten days later. The strikes reportedly killed 15–30 people, and were condemned by the United Nations General Assembly…
      (Taken from Wikipedia)

Could also just be a SMK coincidence but quite a premonition…

  12. So they have a orientation lecture for new agents every TWO weeks for the last 20 YEARS? I haven’t watched past this point, but assuming 20 people per lecture, that’s 10400 agents. That seems a bit high – their turn over rate is brutal. Maybe Amanda shouldn’t be so keen to get a real ID instead of a guess pass.
