Love how Amanda comes across Mauntel’s blue boxers right when she is telling Lee she will never get use to going through people’s private things!

[What is with this show and blue boxers? Winking smile ]

This conversation is interesting.. Lee is not dismissing her, but responding to her concerns with guidance.
2.15 A RELATIVE SITUATION.avi_001709509Lee: it’s all part of the job Amanda don’t take this so personally.
aie.. this makes me think of Spiderweb- and Lee searching Amanda’s house- I think both of them were taking that very personally.. was it before or after this episode?? it feels like after based on this conversation, and leads in nicely to how searching Amanda’s house was different- and personal!
Amanda responds
: I know, it’s just that I respect 2.15 A RELATIVE SITUATION.avi_001716016people’s privacy and I expect other people to respect mine and I just know that if anybody broke into 2.15 A RELATIVE SITUATION.avi_001723023my room and-
Amanda’s voice trails off.. as she’s found something!
Calling Lee to her, she shows him an address she has found written on a hotel room service menu..
2.15 A RELATIVE SITUATION.avi_001728528
It might be something Lt. Mauntel jotted down so Lee treats it like a lead..
Amanda rushes to leave the room:
Okay! Let’s go.
Lee: wait hooo hold it!
(Amanda turns to look at him)

Amanda: ohhhhh Leeeee!!!!!
2.15 A RELATIVE SITUATION.avi_001761061Lee: Amanda, I may have to break into someone else’s house…
2.15 A RELATIVE SITUATION.avi_001763563 …and go through their personal private things!
2.15 A RELATIVE SITUATION.avi_001766066
[love the exaggeration! It’s both private and personal!] …I wouldn’t want to have to put you through that…

Lee gives a chuckle like he’s in pain 2.15 A RELATIVE SITUATION.avi_001782082haaaaa..

but I think it’s a sweet pain, the pain of having someone care about ya!

He takes her arm and guides her out of the hotel room..
2.15 A RELATIVE SITUATION.avi_001787587Amanda: thank you.
Lee goes to open the hotel door but Amanda stops him with a hand on his chest (lucky girl) –
2.15 A RELATIVE SITUATION.avi_001791591
she peeks out of the peek hole to check the hallway haaaa.. Lee can’t believe it!
2.15 A RELATIVE SITUATION.avi_001792092
but hey.. I think good on Amanda! He’s just annoyed he didn’t think of it! Winking smile
2.15 A RELATIVE SITUATION.avi_001792592
Amanda: It’s clear.
2.15 A RELATIVE SITUATION.avi_001793093Lee clears his throat: You’re sure? [whooo saracasm!!]
2.15 A RELATIVE SITUATION.avi_001794594Amanda: positive. [LOL I don’t think she picks up on his sarcasm, the moment her hand hit his chest her mind went blank Winking smile I know mind would!]
Lee: okay? good.
cheeky!!!! I swear they are such an old married couple here!!! I think he’s annoyed..but still finds it kinda cute! Smile

This is a very sweet scene!! Does it remind anyone else of the scene in Das Geisterschloss where Lee tries to get Amanda to stay in the car?? and he tries to control his frustration because he knows she has him?! Only this time, he is smiling and enjoying himself Smile
To me- it’s utter honesty here between these two! They both know what the other is up to.. they both know the other’s faults, and accept each other, they both treat each other with care here.. Lee knows Amanda really wants to come, but he wants to protect her and not have her feel bad about it – so comes up with this new strategy of helping her avoid danger or LOL- the pain of invading people’s privacy! good one!!! Amanda is honest that she knows she’ll go after him if she doesn’t know he’s alright! She’s tried in the past.. but it’s just no darn good..

Lee, she needs to know you are alright! and don’t curse it because if Amanda was not like that – well.. You (Mr Pilgram’s Peach Puff) would have been dead by the end of the first episode! Deep down.. I think Lee is genuinely touched at how Amanda cares for him, and looks out for him- he’s starting to become more comfortable with this, and to actually enjoy it a little Smile

In the context of this episode and what we have learned about Lee and his upbringing, being left by his uncle to fend for himself more or less.. it’s even more touching that Lee has Amanda to care about him – Lee’s not alone anymore!!!! He knows this now, and he’s accepting it Smile He’s still not quite use to it!! but.. I think it’s all very sweet!!!

SMK does this progression so beautifully – by building their friendship, we don’t skip all this good stuff!!! We really are (IMHO) given the whole of their love story –the very meaningful and touching parts- not just the sexual tension and the drama.. Is it just me or are tv shows these days missing out on the good stuff like scene, between their characters? Ohhh I could go on and on.. but I’ll stop there: can’t wait to hear what you think!

I shall finish up there for now.. as always I’d love to hear your thoughts – Isn’t this part of the episode fabulous?? so full of Lee and Amanda goodness!!! Can’t wait to hear what you think!

  1. #2019 rewatch
If the sergeant needed to write down the address to remember it, why is it still in the hotel room? These are the little things that make me crazy.

Amanda wants to go with him, but Lee puts her off the scent by saying he might have to break into someone’s home and he doesn’t want her to endure that twice. Hogwash!

What Lee really anticipates is heightened danger with an entirely different situation. This is not an Agency case where they’re going after foreign spies or terrorists. These are active U.S. military men, who kidnapped one of their own. In trying to rescue his uncle, Lee doesn’t know the extent of military traitors involved, so he does see the wisdom in going along with Amanda’s one hour check-in.

  3. I am way late saying this, but I think Amanda touches Lee in this scene more because he has opened up to her and shown vulnerability which shows trust. I think she is feeling very close to him – maybe they feel close to each other. I am not disagreeing with other views on why she touched him. I think it was a combination of all these things.

  4. Well, I am still a few episodes and 5 months behind y’all, but it is such a pleasure to read everyone’s comments! You are all are so right about the development of Amanda and Lee’s relationship. SMK does such a wonderful job of telling a complete story about their friendship. I know that is why I keep coming back to the show. It’s full of positive energy! And Jenbo, I can relate to your personal story because it sounds like mine. Really knowing a person before getting into an intimate relationship adds a whole additional depth. I love reading everyones’ comments because you all give voice to thoughts I didn’t even know I had but were floating around in my head waiting to be given a voice.

  5. Just a couple of comments about this scene, which I really like. I think that maybe Amanda is so touchy-feely in this episode because she is learning just how much of that Lee missed in growing up with the Colonel. She is giving him some emotional reassurance because he hasn’t had that. I think that Lee accepts it because he is so focused on helping his uncle that his guard his down in keeping Amanda at arms length.

Remember in the beginning of the episode when he quickly explains to Amanda why he said he was desperate when she looked offended. He knows that Amanda is the only one who can help him get through the evening. His guard is so far down that he was willing to admit that he was called “diaper duty”. Why would you tell anyone that unless you trusted them?

It’s also interesting to note that Amanda has a calming effect on both Lee and the Colonel. They both seem to back off their abrasiveness when she’s around.

I also like the way they developed this relationship. There’s so much more of a payoff in the long run. A true friendship developed before the relationship did and a great deal of trust was developed between them both.

Absolutely brilliant, Valerie — I think you hit the nail on the head.

      1. Whooooo Morley.. the whole idea is just very swoony isn’t it!!!! this scene is not terribly dramatic.. and when I think of the big moments in smk – well this isn’t one of them! but.. there are just sooooo many small moments like this that hit you as you go through the show step by step – where you just stop and think: wow!!! would you look at these two in this scene??!!! they’ve come so far!!! LOL..

I am sure we will each vary in which scenes have that affect on us- so please be sure to tell us when you experience a moment like that- even if others don’t!- they are many.. and scattered throughout the whole show.. just brilliant!!!

Yes!!! Lee and Amanda don’t really have ‘fights’ in the way characters on shows these days do. If they do (Brunettes was the one deal breaker of a fight IMHO!) it’s to resolve something.. and they move onward and upward.. it’s not a major regression..there isn’t revenge or anything-they mostly put what’s best for the other first.. (we may have some tiny regressions though.. LOL I know Lee can blow a little hot and cold!) or we have the fight in wrong number or over the limit – not that I remember them well – but Lee and Amanda never have fights or disagreements where they’re entire relationship is put in peril – that is secure (from Brunettes onwards).. the drama comes in other ways – which are much harder to write (and which maybe the $$ people these days don’t want to pay good writers to write) ohh I’ll get off my soap box!
I loved reading your thoughts Morley! thank you!

Oh really? I was too busy swooning over Lee! I’ll check out Amanda’s pleasant surprise! I guess Amanda isn’t yet quite certain of what response she will get from Lee..

Yes Lee is the mentor here.. and Amanda the student.. I love that when it comes to matters of the heart – those roles are reversed!!!!! 🙂

Whooooo yes Morely – gorgeous the fog has lifted!!! I loved your metaphor! thank you!!

Thanks Jenbo.. Glad you enjoyed Lee’s ‘sweet pain’ – what a wonderful love story you have.. I would love to one day be able to say my own was along those lines.. but I guess you can never quite write your own love story – err it does involve another person doesn’t it?! haaaaa

Hi Bjo.. ahh you agree with Morley and I huh.. yes they are on a good run at this point in the episode! very partner-ish! 🙂 I guess this little lesson of Lee’s [ie. his pep talk about searching rooms] sets up the line of Lee’s that’s coming up -that he taught Amanda everything she knows 😉

Yeah there are lots of times they work well together.. very true.. this moment felt different because they felt equal- even though Lee was in the position of authority.. if you know what I mean..

Agreed Cindy! Spot on!!! I was going to say something like that about ALSALS..-I’ll try and remember to get back to this.. but I agree BB and KJ are to be commended! Ahhhh maybe you can recommend a few fan fics you’ve really enjoyed at some point.. I’ll be looking for advice when we’ve finished our walk through!

Yeah.. Amanda being touchy and feely?? I think it is more Lee than Amanda too Morley, but Amanda does have her moments and it tends to be when they are in danger (stay close- not that close! 😉 ) and there have been a few moments where she fixed his tie.. Lee touches much more – but I think Amanda touches Lee when she is thinking about something else and distracted.. she’ll be looking somewhere else when she touches him.. whereas Lee tends to guide Amanda alot.. or want to touch her when things are serious – and she needs to listen to him!!! Just a general impression I have.. I haven’t thought deeply about it though..

Ahaaa I see Jenbo has answered this also! 🙂 yes – pay attention Jenbo! tee heee!! 😉

Hi Valerie!!! [guys Valerie is new to the blog – this is Valerie’s second comment!! whooo hooooo!!! 🙂 please feel free to welcome her!! ]
wonderful to hear from you Valerie! whoooo your theory of why Amanda is so touchy feely?? *shivers down my spine* that’s so good I love it!!!! 🙂 I like the way you think Valerie! 😉

Yes what Lee has shared with Amanda thus far in the episode could have only encouraged them both to feel closer to one another! 🙂 and Amanda is probably aware that Lee cares about his uncle, is worried and is on the search to find him and help him.. stay tuned.. there’s another ‘Amanda touch’ coming you won’t be able to miss! rofl!!!

Yes indeed Valerie! Diaper Duty is horrendous!!! And for a proud guy like Lee, who hasn’t historically been a ‘sharer’ it’s big admission!
Very true about Amanda’s calming effect! did someone else mention that on an earlier post? I think so.. anyway- it’s still very true 🙂 Amanda is their circuit breaker!

Here here about the payoff Valerie! we get little pay offs all the time don’t we! Like this lovely little scene – so heartwarming.. it really is good for the soul isn’t it!

Ahhhh yep! Cindy you put it very well – Valerie did hit the nail right on the head!!!! 🙂
Cindy I hope you are well! It’s lovely to hear from you! You got a busy summer ahead of you?
        Byeee all!!!

        1. You are right, Iwsod, that Lee is the teacher when it comes to spy work and Amanda is the teacher when it comes to the personal stuff. And in this episode they transition between the two so easily, weren’t they just having coffee talking about Lee caring for his uncle before this scene? Makes me think again of Lee’s confession to Amanda in Utopia Now about how much he has learned from her.

  6. I’m with you, Morley – I think this is the longest they’ve worked together without there being some kind of frustration from Lee. Even his “I wouldn’t want to put you through that twice in one day” comes out fairly softly. He doesn’t put her down for thinking she can help him, instead he’s seeing some value in it – although he doesn’t admit it. Sounds a little partner-ish to me. He knows she wants to have his back. (Ok, that sounds a little funny, but tee hee, I’m not deleting it! 🙂 ). Sorry, ahem, focus, that took me totally in a different direction….

For me, another example of where they work well together is Charity Begins at Home. I like that episode for that very reason. Well, that and the tag. But their work in CBAH doesn’t have nearly the same close/comfort feel that we get here.

  7. Ooh Amanda is so touchy feely in this scene, subconsciously she can’t keep her hands off him 😉
I love your idea IWSOD that Lee’s in pain, a sweet pain. Very aptly put 🙂
It’s great how Lee thinks he’s got one over Amanda because she uses snooping into people’s personal private things (dontcha just love alliteration lol) and then she evens things up by threatening to turn up if he doesn’t call.

Regarding modern TV shows I agree, they rarely show a slowly blossoming friendship-come-romance. It’s wham bam thank you ma’am 😦 Everything feels rushed these days and lets face it modern TV isn’t happy unless a happy relationship is going wrong. It’s always about the drama but never in a good way 😦
Personally I love Lee and Amanda because they remind me of my own relationship/marriage. That was born out of working together, being friends for a couple of years with an awful lot of sexual tension and hesitation about ruining what we had. Makes me feel 18 again woo hoo!!!!

    1. Do you think she is always this touchy feely with him, or is she especially so right now? Usually I notice that it is Lee reaching out to touch her, Amanda doesn’t do that as often although maybe I haven’t paid as much attention to it.

      1. Good question, like you I’ve always noticed Lee guiding her with his hand at her back etc. I can’t say I’ve noticed her touching him quite in this way before but I may not have been paying attention. I shall do from now on though 😉

        1. Oh, this sounds like a stats question!! Too bad we’re only up to Sudden Death in S1. 😦 I did go back and look at the Touches section for each episode. It’s mostly Lee touching Amanda, but in ITCK, Amanda does the bulk of the touching. It’s different than the touching in this hotel room search scene though. The touching here, reminds me more of the touching we see in seasons 3 and 4.

    3. Yes, Jenbo, that’s exactly how I saw the Lee/Amanda “you’re not going” discussion. In S1 Lee used to win some of those arguments, but as S2 progresses, he starts to lose more and more of them. (Witness the “I’m trying to be tough but can’t manage it” look that you screencapped, Iwsod — we saw that in Double Agent too when Amanda wanted to see the book manuscript.) By S3 he loses pretty much all of them, with OTSTWizard being a very notable exception, and OTLimit being a whole “who really won” discussion all on its own. But here we see Lee thinking he won, enjoying it for just a moment, only to be trumped by Amanda who I’m quite sure had her strategy for plan B (“call me”) in place at the time she surrendered on Plan A. It is sweet that in the end Lee doesn’t particularly seem to mind being trumped.

I’m with you, Melissa. I don’t watch today’s TV either. I fell out of the habit in the 90’s and have not been able to warm back up to it. I guess eventually I will, but I’d rather watch SMK in my free time!

      1. Is it in RFTSky that Amanda tells Lee to use his skills and she will use her intuition to get them onto a floor, she then continues that it sounds like a plan and all Lee can do is shake his head, laugh, and open the door for her to get in? It almost seems that he doesn’t try too hard 🙂

  8. Iwsod, your last paragraph about how the show developed the progression of their friendship is exactly why I love SMK. I have never seen a story told so well, so completely. Other shows just have this thunderbolt crash and, boom, their characters fall in love and we must believe it is deep and abiding… until the next crisis come along. Either that or they keep hurting one another or they manipulate each other. But not Lee and Amanda! Even though the show doesn’t give us even all of their personal interaction, we see mostly their interaction during cases, we watch as they grow and learn to love and be loved by each other. We watch them slowly and believably change due to their growing relationship. That is true to life because the people in our lives do change us and cause us to grow.

The last part of this scene when Lee says “alright” to Amanda’s request that he call her reminds me of the scene with his Uncle outside the hotel. It looked to me that Lee’s “alright” surprised and relieved Amanda a bit like the Colonel’s agreement to go with Lee surprised and relieved Lee.

I don’t think we have seen Lee and Amanda interact so well with each other like this before, have we? There is a oneness, a comfort, a bond? Lee is the teacher but he doesn’t chafe at it, Amanda is learning from him but feels at peace and a part of the team. They are free to express their closeness and concern for one another in the complete honesty that you pointed out Iwsod. It just feels different, like a fog has lifted or they have stepped into a sunny clearing from a dark woods…

    1. SMK is a very rare gem indeed. I wonder how much of it is due to KJ and BB’s influence since sometimes the writing is a little on the silly side. (I saw a wonderful interview with the both of them, post season 2 pre-three and she explained how they remained in character the entire time they were on set. )
A lot of the fan fiction drives me nuts because the creator is in such a rush to get them ‘together’ that it violates the specialness of the relationship.
