1/1 Scarecrow and Mrs King- Baddies-Cindy’s Top 5 Villains for Season 1!

[Author: Cindy Davis]

I love season 1 of SMK and that’s in no small part due to the over-the-top-tea-sipping-badly-dressed-bad-guys. Here’s my favourite top 5.
Please feel free to debate and add your own.

The top 3 are so close in ranking; they actually switch spots depending on my mood.

1. Bobby Bouchard
(There Goes the Neighbourhood).

1.02 There Goes The Neighbourhood.wmv_001153385OMH – absolutely brilliant as a deranged mommy’s boy who never got the attention he so desperately craved when she was alive.
1.02 There Goes The Neighbourhood.wmv_001188954
I bet he dresses like her and stabs young women in the shower when they check into his motel. And the lines “I hate women!” and “Do you know what lying does for 1.02 There Goes The Neighbourhood.wmv_002418149your skin? Lying causes stress and stress wrinkles the skin. Capillaries burst, skin flakes. A lying face is 1.02 There Goes The Neighbourhood.wmv_002392189not a pretty face. Now tell me what you were doing in the Bodine house and what did Frank say to you?” make me miss the writing of early season one!

2. Russell Sinclair
(Remembrance of things past)
Hands down one of my favourites! Yes, he is a nut job and I am not sure I can forgive him for forcing Lee to 1.11 REMEMBERANCE.wmv_002457488wear that awful plaid and hat combo, but he was a janitor with no formal training (except what he learned from his role) and 1.11 REMEMBERANCE.wmv_002457621he kills several highly trained operatives in the prime of their careers and physical prowess, not just in the Agency where he worked, but agents from several countries on both sides of the iron curtain. My hat is off to you sir, I am sorry you couldn’t have been brought back for future episodes.

1.11 REMEMBERANCE.wmv_002640905

3 Zinoviev
(Saved by the Bells)

1.08 SAVED BY THE BELLS.wmv_000865998Awwww! What a (ruthless) sweetie! He has such 1.08 SAVED BY THE BELLS.wmv_001033198respect for Amanda/Scarecrow and treats this whole spy business as a wonderful game.
1.08 SAVED BY THE BELLS.wmv_0026676651.08 SAVED BY THE BELLS.wmv_002680744
That’s how bad guys should be. I would definitely love to sit down and have a cup of tea with him.

4. Lost and Found – No not HER! Though I have to give a grudging respect to a woman who could get two men to fall in love with her at once and hide the fact she’s KGB from her husband (who’s an ESP expert – ouch! that must have been a blow to the old ego) and a highly trained operative (double ouch!).
I nominate Sergeant Magovich.
1.12 LOST AND FOUND.wmv_001137469
I thought Rae Allen was brilliant in this role, playing 1.12 LOST AND FOUND.wmv_002568098the no nonsense, very scary KGB agent with the gravelly voice, beigey-brown lipstick and the amazing kick-butt boots. She had a style that was undeniable.

5. Alan Squires/Art Garfunkel (Artful Dodger). 06Yes, the ring was fugly, but you have to admit he played the role with panache.
83
And he makes the list for decking Lee after he (Lee) 91was a being such an ass to Amanda
93
(Did I ever mention how much I REALLY, REALLY HATED Lee in this episode?).

Honourable mentions

* The dynamic duo of Ballon and Major Sprague (Savior).
The duo miss the top 5 ‘bythismuch’ (honestly, the only reason Alan made the cut was he punched Lee). What 104body parts hadn’t Major Sprague lost in combat? I bet he even had a bionic nose– Ha ha ha!. Ballon (aka Richard Vernon in the Breakfast Club) 106is ranked so highly because Lee was still in ‘jerk’ mode. It was brilliant the way he duped Amanda, admitting that Scarecrow didn’t see the partnership, but everyone else did. Very well played! I also loved the fact they had brochures they 140could hand out to their customers. There is something to be said for very organized baddies! I bet the local copy shop did a double take when they were printing that order.

* James Delano
(Service Above and Beyond).

103I actually felt bad for him. On some level he cared for Amanda/Victoria and could see in her what Lee was blind to, and was genuinely upset
191196
that Amanda got caught in the crossfire.

* Jerry Perrine
(Charity Begins at Home)

S2E05_Charity.flv_000502000Yes, I know he is technically season 2 baddie, but Charity begins at home should have been the last episode of season one. How could the S2E05_Charity.flv_001148400Polka dot king not get at least an honourable mention?
S2E05_Charity.flv_002255360
Honestly, how long did wardrobe have to search for that get-up?

Thoughts? Who makes your list for fave Season One baddies and why?

  1. Hi Everyone! finally I get to check out this post properly!!!

Cindy- I am so glad you decided to take the plunge and join in!!! I love the idea of mixing things up with some topical posts from time to time.. it’s great for looking back at smk from a wider view than just per episode kind of thing! You’ve done a great job!!! And reminded us of some really funny smk moments!!

I couldn’t sleep the other night so I was mentally trying to go through season one, and remember who all the baddies were in the episodes! LOL! I amused myself no end! 🙂 It’s a bit like counting sheep..

I have to say when putting the pics in, I loved your top 2 choices!!!!
Being psychologically minded.. I appreciated Bobby Buchard’s Oedipus complex – rofl!!! His talking to his mum’s portrait, running the business she started, and at the end of it all hating women?? was too funny!!!! I loved the camera angles used in Bobby’s office looking down on him – almost from his dead mother’s point of view or something!!! A really interesting idea!
I think his ‘I hate women!!!’ cry is one of his best lines! -Funny not because he hates women, but because he’s had to put up with having his whole life revolve around women! His business being all about women…
The other line of his I loved was right after Bobby tells his goons to find the two people who had been at the Bodene’s house, and find out what Frank Bodene had said to them- and then he wants them to be killed. The goons leave to carry out his orders. Left alone again with his mum’s portrait Bobby shrugs and says: “It’s as you always said Mum.. it’s a dog eat dog world!” I think this is hilarious!!! that’s what the graceful Connie Beth use to say all the time to her son??? roflmbo!!! I just love how it twists our view of what Connie Beth would have been like..

And.. Russell Sinclair – the more I watch Remembrance of things past, the more I love this guy! [He had a few too many birds on his antenna]
I don’t know if you saw but not long ago I had a realisation about a line in that episode so I added it to the comments.. At the beginning of the episode, Lee is given a threatening note stating “I’ve got my eye on you!” – I hadn’t connected the dots.. but later we learn that the person who wrote this note, Sinclair, does indeed have one eye and so he literally has his ‘eye’ on Lee!!!!
Russell Sinclair’s conversation with Amanda as she is tied up and he wires Lee’s place to blow is genius- the writing and the performance are to me- riveting.. I couldn’t take my eyes off him! 😉 tee heee.. I love the way he says the last thing he remembered on set before his accident was looking around and thinking – whooo this is really quite realistic! ha haaaaa!!!

I Guess I prefer fabulous dialogue and quirky personalities in my baddies..

Zinoviev, whose name I can never spell properly – is fabulous also.. but I think he is fabulous because of his part in a fabulous episode.. he is not funny really, it ‘s the situation that is funny. but I enjoy his matter of fact understanding of the spy world and how everyone is disposable.. his reverence for Amanda’s skills ha! and yes.. we even see him retrieve a tea set from the cupboard and pour some tea for his guest – though unfortunately I couldn’t get a good pic of this tea sipping baddie!

Sgt. Magovich’s line about stepping away from the crushing device has me LOL’ing every time!! and those boots? I’m jealous! I want them!! I must say, I love how she gets to boss the men around 😉

Alan Squires? Meh.. the only thing I liked about him was that I got a great pic of him sipping tea and looking evil – it was such an smk stereotype I loved that!

Would anyone else like to write a season 1 baddie post?? there is room for many! There are many baddies! and many views! 🙂 so if you think it would be fun… let me know!

A couple of season 1 baddies I’d like to mention..
Fave menacing baddie: Hollander (SAAbeyond) – I don’t usually like menacing.. but he is so world class it is perfect.. well he had lots of practice at it in James Bond movies! But his line about James Delano’s cuticles as he sits in James’ bedroom, eating James’ breakfast and completely taking over his life? Genius!

The weasel faced man does definitely deserve a mention!! Poor bloke.. can you imagine his acting bio?? Played the weasel-faced man in Magic Bus.. his mother and father must be proud! 😉
Ahhh Valerie, I see you mentioned him also!!! he was great wasn’t he!!! If only for the way Amanda got to talk about the Weasel faced man all the time and annoy Lee haaaa!

Frenemy: Francine is at times a baddie to me.. especially the way she knocks Amanda as much as she can- was it terribly terribly painful? – she is gleeful at the idea of Amanda being tortured.. [I guess she never got over accidentally being caught complimenting Amanda’s driving in Magic Bus!] .. I love Francine’s character, and how she grows to become more friend than enemy with Amanda.. but in Season one.. she is more enemy than friend! So I’ll list her!

Most annoying baddies: If thoughts could kill baddies with their stupid duck and Motto ‘ Kill Bill’ – which years later would get stolen by Tarrantino 😉

Most generic baddies: the baddies from I am not now nor have I ever been a spy.. they are dangerous, and not very interesting! and.. they killed Stuart Little!! 😉

Most traitorous- Yep David Benson.. slime!!!! Shona- you are spot on!!! he is beyond awful isn’t he!!
Shona I loved your comments about Eva also – you called her on her line- I agree.. she didn’t love him.. she didn’t have a clue what love is!

Best baddie line: is by Armin in Weekend.. “Tony? my future is in the hands of the poolboy, Tony?” so random.. but I love it!!! Because he is right.. it is utterly ridiculous!! 🙂

Baddie you wish you had seen get what was coming to them but didn’t: Valerie Tucker in Weekend.. I hope the massage did give her bruising!!!! 🙂

Hiya BJo, yeah!!! Dimitri was great!! It was very progressive of smk to be portraying KGB as the other side- but real people also! 🙂 ‘Wodka’ – roflmbo- Good one!! 🙂

Yeah Morley- Mrs Welch deserves a mention!!! for calling Lee Pilgram’s Peach puff!!!! 😉 tee hee..

Season one dialogue is just bursting at the seams with gems! I wish I had quoted more dialogue as I had walked through them 😦 oh well.. we can always go back and do season 1 again! or heck.. someone else might like to when we are all done! 🙂

byeee everyone!! I’ve really enjoyed this ‘walk’ through season 1 baddies!!

  2. Great job, Cindy!!! I agree with your picks and enjoyed your post. Bobby Bouchard, yeah what can you say so many problems there!!! I love Zinoviev he’s a baddie that you can’t help but like. Saved by the Bells is my favorite from Season 1.

Can’t wait for your season 2 baddie post 🙂

  3. There really were so off the wall baddies weren’t there. A cooking show lady who was really gathering government secrets? So why shouldn’t a housewife become a spy? Bobby Bouchard was perfectly twisted and awful, and Sinclair really was good at his job 😉 I liked the way they portrayed the Russians as not all bad, they were people too, and I think they did that often, Long Christmas, Possum, even Gregory wasn’t over the top bad, he was portrayed more of the Russian counterpart to Billy (remember their salute to one another in Wrong Number?), and this during the Cold War.

  4. Your top three all match mine Cindy (good job on the post BTW) but I would put Russell Sinclair at the very top. I just love how quietly deranged he is 🙂 Close second is Bobby Buchard and his obsession with beauty LOL

  5. I agree with most of the baddie choices. I do like Zinoviev. He was kind of a classy bad guy. For some reason I was amused by an assistant bad guy in The Magic Bus, he wasn’t the main baddie, but Amanda kept bringing him up…the weasel-faced man. It was such a true description of the guy.

I didn’t like Carlo in Fearless Dotty. He played a scary bad guy (Falconetti) in a mini-seriies and I didn’t like him then. William Smith played a lot of bad guys. It was funny that he was paired with Bernie from Weekend at Bernie’s.

Also, SMK tended to have some people on the show more than once, but as a different character. Sometimes they were a bad guy twice. The Lazlo character in Sudden Death was the sommelier in Sour Grapes. He was a poor bad guy in both.

Hollander was pretty realistic. He even slapped Amanda. Lee should have taken him out for that alone. Sometimes I thought Lee was acting like a bad guy, but of course, he eventually redeemed himself big time.

  6. Good choices for OTT baddies.

Most realistic baddie would have to go to Hollander in Service Above and Beyond. He was serious about being bad. No over the top antics with him, just cold-hearted, business-end-of-things bad. And you’ve got to admire him for it.

Second would be Eva in Lost and Found. She had everybody fooled but Amanda. Then she had the nerve to declare to Lee at the end that of course she was in love with him. Huh??! Weren’t you the same woman who thought nothing of shooting Lee in the back just before that? (No bullets in the gun thanks to Amanda). Sorry Sweetie, that qualifies you as seriously bad.

    1. Yep those were definitely the most realistic baddies, for season 1 I tended towards the over-the-top and a little nuts or goofy. I am really torn for season two if Brunettes’ slimy Sinclair is going to make the cut. *SHUDDER*

    2. Just thought of a #3 for real bad Season 1 baddie – David Benson in The Mole. To betray and endanger your fellow agents and your country definitely gets the big thumbs down. He didn’t come across as truly menacing as Hollander or as devious and cold as Eva, but for high treason and his attempt to untimely end Lee’s life, he comes in a close 3rd.

  7. Hahaha! Polka dot king! ROFL!

Great post, Cindy! I completely agree with your top 3. Though I might put Zinoviev above Sinclair just because Sinclair was nuttier than a fruitcake and Zinoviev didn’t have that bonus (Yes, I think it’s an advantage when a baddie is nuts!). And Bobby Bouchard! He is hands down the creepiest baddie for me in S1 and maybe in all of SMK. I think he’s one taco short of a combo plate too….

If I may, I’d also like to nominate a baddie that I’m particularly fond of: Dimtri from The Long Christmas Eve. Any baddie who is willing to share his 110 proof wodka and imported Baltic Sea herring on Christmas Eve with the enemy gets a thumbs up in my book. Remember his line, “I eat your beans, you eat my wodka.”? Makes me laugh every time! That plus the fact that he gets Amanda a little tipsy. He’s polite in the cabin, sort of like Zinoviev. I happened to have a pic of him saying his line, so I’ll slip it in:
