Next scene, Lee and Amanda are meeting Billy again.. and Billy seems about to have an aneurysm!
Billy: Are you both completely crazy?
Lee: Billy, Amanda is not part of this decision. Now, just hear what I have to say.
Billy: No! There’s nothing to hear. You’re talking about a suicide mission, pure and simple.
Lee: This watch, my friend, activates in nine hours, pure and simple.
[Hang on, current time is 2:18, and there are 9 hrs, 22 minutes to countdown? Ummm isn’t that counting down to 1140pm?? Not 1130pm?? Now that’s funny!!!!!
I really think Billy is being very short sighted here. cough cough. If Lee gets in, and he becomes contagious, they will have conducted a bioweapon attack on the USSR. Soooo it’s win win! haaaaaa.. okay okay I really don’t want Lee to die.. but still.. cough cough.. Then again, the Russians have the antidote/antibiotic so he might not take many out… still, he would inconvenience them greatly! haaaa]
Billy: McJohn has three teams working. I have ten men surrounding the embassy. Doneck might make a mistake. We might be able to appeal to the White House.
[Aie. so what. Lee wants to break into the USSR embassy what’s he got to lose?!]
Lee: Billy, I have less time to live than most people have for a good night’s sleep. ‘Might’ does not sound like such good odds to me!
[Lee’s had a gutful! This conversation seems like a waste of time. Lee has the deadman’s watch, so let him do what he wants.]
Billy: Odds. You want to talk about odds? What do you think the odds are of your going out here and getting Doneck by yourself? A million to one. If you’re really lucky.
Lee: Put yourself in my shoes.
What would you do?
(Lee gives Billy a finger to the chest and then walks away.. whooooo cool off gents!)
Amanda: He’s going to do what he has to do. I think we should help him.
[She’s such a trooper here. If this was me I’d be hysterical! Don’t get in the way of my man trying to save his own life!]
Billy: Officially, my hands are tied.
(He pauses).. Unofficially… Personally!!!!.
… I can’t stand still any more than Amanda could. (To Lee) If you need anything, just ask.
{Lee turns back and returns to where they stand.}
Lee: Okay, I’m asking. I want a TX-10 tranq dart gun and a chem kit with something to get Doneck talking. Then I want someone standing by to cook up the antidote.
[Ah. we are back to the antidote!]
Billy: You got it.
Lee: Thanks…
…Could you, uh, get Amanda back to her house?
{Billy nods.}
Lee: Listen, Amanda, Fritz is going to show up there pretty soon. If I’m late, just keep him occupied, okay?
{{SARA: A toy mouse on a string? Laser pen light? Okay, I’ll quit with the cat jokes.}
[Whahahahaaaa Sara!!!
Wow. It’s already 2pm, and 9 hours to go.. I keep looking at that deadman’s watch and thinking instead that is’ 9pm with 2 hrs to go. lol.]
{Lee leaves. Billy remains with Amanda.}
Billy: A lot can happen between now and 11:30.
Amanda: I know.
Billy: You’re going to be closer to him than I will, so…you take the key.
{He hands her the key.}
Billy: If we get the antidote, cut him loose. {Amanda smiles.}
The scene ends here.
[In spite of all the yelling, lol, there is a few big shows of trust here between them – Lee leaves Amanda with Billy.
And… Billy hands over to Amanda the key stopping Lee from taking off his man bracelet. Awhhhh..
Ah. Good man Billy!!! and… what’s with the antidote?! Antidote, antibiotics. whatever.]
Moving on! We find Lee sitting in a cafe. Come on Lee! No time for this!!! lol.
He seems to be reading the paper and drinking coffee. A stylish woman with a fur hat (which screams Russian!) sits at the table next to him.
She’s carried a little tray of what looks like coffee, syrup, a bread roll with her – heck this scene looks like it should have been at breakfast time. So weird. Whatever.]
Lee: Short notice, Katrina. Thanks for coming.
Katrina: I’m part of your family, Lee. You don’t need to thank me. I just wish I were not here. Not like this.
Lee: What do you have?
Katrina: Lee, Doneck is a pig. He drinks too much vodka and brags about your death.
Katrina takes a folded piece of paper out of her pocket and slips it to Lee.
Katrina: This has a map of Doneck’s location in the embassy. Just as you asked.
Lee: Thank you. Mmm.
(Lee takes the piece of paper.)
[Lee doesn’t seem to be wearing his man bracelet.. and I swear I can see his watch band on his right wrist! see above? That’s Lee’s right hand in the foreground.
and then.. nothing on his right wrist!]
Katrina: Lee, Doneck is a fanatic about his personal safety. His suite is perhaps the most secure in the embassy. Guards are posted constantly. How can I help?..
..Let me. Please.
[Awh. This Katrina is pretty great!]
Lee nods. [Oh good!!]
New Scene!! We head back to Amanda’s.. Lee is meeting with Fritz and going over what he’s come up with..
Fritz the cat: Alright. Now this is going to take a minimum of five men to crack this and a whole lot more time than a couple hours prep. How many men have you got?
(Lee doesn’t answer.)
Lee: Which is the best way in?
(Fritz shows Lee there’s only one way in, showing Lee a blueprint, he points out an old aqueduct.)
Fritz: …it runs parallel to the street. President Grant had it put in to bring fresh well water into the White House for his bourbon.
(They share a chuckle at this little tidbit)
…You gain access here. On D street and you head north. Now, exactly 77 feet… Say it. Lee: 77 feet.
Fritz the cat: You start digging. And you come out… {He pauses to pick up a different map.}
…right here, in this old storage room…
…But look out, it’s hot. It’s wired for sound and movement. Now, assuming you can get past that little problem, you are inside, my friend. Then I figure you know where you’re going and what you want, right? {Doorbell rings. Fritz the cat gets up on the couch.}
{{SARA: Hope Amanda and Dotty don’t mind a cat on the furniture.}
[Haaaaa!!]
Fritz the cat: Listen, nobody’s asking. But if you want my advice as a pro-
Lee: Thanks, Fritz. Thanks a lot. I owe you one.
Getting the message, Fritz gets up from the couch and grabs his jacket.
[I wonder what Fritz makes of that man bracelet!]
Fritz the cat: Good luck, my friend. (Off camera): See you later, Mrs. King.
{{SARA: Okay, Fritz is a pretty cool cat.}
{So are your cat jokes Sara!]
{Amanda enters the living room with a piece of paper in her hand. Lee glances over from the drawing in his hand, seeing her nervous he gets up and goes to her.}
Lee: Amanda, what is it?
Amanda: It’s from IFF. A messenger just brought it.
{She hands it to Lee.}
Lee: They work fast. I asked Billy to handle this for me last night…
… Amanda, I’ve never had a beneficiary for the agency life insurance policy and…
..I wanted you and your boys to be taken care of. You know, just… Just in case.
Amanda: When do you have to leave?
Lee: Billy’s here at 6:00.
{Amanda sits down on the couch beside him and wraps her arms around him.}
[Cute the sad sad music. ugly cry ugly cryyyyyy!!!!]
Amanda: I want more time.
(Lee tightens his hold on Amanda also.. Awhhhh!!!! GAHHHHH!!!!!)The scene ends here..
[If my memory serves me, this is the moment that some sexy times were introduced in the script or something? Can anyone speak to this? I’m going to leave this to someone to look up the script if they like.
Me? I’m not attached to either side of the did they/didn’t they debate. LOL. If Billy isn’t arriving till 6pm they do have some time up their sleeves (get it?!).]
Moving on, and it’s back to Billy’s office.. and it’s 5pm. Lee and Amanda have to occupy themselves for a whole hour? My my… cough cough..
Francine updates Billy on McJohn’s lack of progress – seems the PD2 is a tricksy nut to crack.
Billy: Well, we can’t wait. I told Lee I’d bring his shopping list at 6:00.
Francine: Everything is set. I’ve camouflaged the paperwork in about a dozen different files just to cover you. All you have to do is say the word, and we move.
Billy: Francine, I appreciate your help. And I realize all the risks involved. But this time, I think you’d better cut it and run. It could get mean.
Francine: No way, Billy, no! I am already too far out on that limb with you. Besides, I owe Lee a lot. Anything I do for him now, just consider it a down payment.
Billy: I told myself the same thing a hundred times today. But a down payment isn’t going to be enough if he goes out there alone.
[AWH!!!!!! Francine wants in!!! And so sweet of Billy to give her an out, and let her choose whether she will take it. awhhhhhh]
{Door opens. Francine and Billy look toward the door. Dr. Smyth enters.}
{{SARA: Dr. Smyth should really have his own creepy entry music when he walks in a room. Lol}}
[That and the temperature drops by ten degrees! Uh oh. Dr Smyth has a knack for turning up right when you don’t want him to!! I do love to hate him! lol. Seems my fave character I love to hate has shifted from Francine to Dr Smyth! How about you?]
Billy: Dr. Smyth.
Dr. Smyth: Took a walk down to Pennsylvania Avenue. Scarecrow’s name came up…
…Surprised I might have something besides a lump of coal in my chest? It’s no matter. The fact is, the White House turned thumbs down on any deal we might have made to stuff some new straw back into Scarecrow. Diplomatic considerations…
[Firstly, as if anyone was waiting for Dr Smyth or the white house to help Lee!!]
…They also made it abundantly clear we’re to keep our mitts off lest we risk losing a hand. Enough said? {Dr Smith turns and leaves. Billy and Francine exchange a look.}
[Yawn. I could have guessed that’s what he had to say.]
{{SARA: Goodbye, Dr. Charming!}
[Exactly!]
Back to Amanda’s and a UPS truck has just arrived.. oh no wait, that’s Billy!
{Billy and Francine get out of the truck, Francine opens the gate for them and they go to her door. Francine knocks on the door and Amanda answers.}
[Can anyone think when was the last time we saw Francine come to Amanda’s home???]
Amanda: Hi.
{Lee steps up beside her.}
Billy: Time to move, Scarecrow. Everything’s set. Let’s go.
Lee: Uh-uh. No way. This one is mine, Billy. Alone.
Billy: Sorry, Scarecrow. You’re outvoted.
…Two to one.
Amanda: Three to one!
{Billy has a smirk. Lee peers over at Amanda and does not look happy.}
[No time to argue Lee. Just get on with it ]
We move on to a really loud jackhammer! aie.
Looks like they are digging.. (Inside the UPS truck we see a big clock inside..
uh oh. Amanda is inside the truck.)
{The jackhammer sounds come to a stop.}
(We hear Lee tell Amanda they’re making good progress, and are two feet in. Amanda responds that Francine is checking on the back up.)
[Back up? I thought this was just the four of them? I really don’t remember this!!]
(We see Francine get out of a truck, there seems to be a guy in the passenger seat. She joins Amanda, I guess in the back of that truck?
Lee checks in to say the drilling continues to progress.. )
Francine: We’re all set. McJohn and the med team are standing by. How are Billy and Lee doing?
[Ohhhh so McJohn is on board huh? How can that be? Is the military allowed to go against the white house????]
Amanda: Okay, but we’re running out of time.
[Whoa.. 20 minutes of drilling? Honestly??!!!! I mean why doesn’t Lee use some of that thermite magic wire burning stuff. that might work without the noisy explosion? really???!!! Gahhhhh don’t panic everyone. GAHHHHHH…..]
Amanda: I should be down there with the keys to the watch.
[Yeah! yeah! she should. let her go!]
Francine: These keys are useless until the antidote is inside Lee. If that’s gonna happen, it’ll be up here, not down there. [Francine stop being rational at a time like this. this is panic time!!!!!! gahhhhh!!!!]
(Inside the embassy, we see Katrina heading down a corridor in some awesome boots that tell us she’s Russian.
Dang. I love those boots!
Checking she hasn’t been observed, and confirming the time, she heads into a room pulls an important looking plug, and looks all super stealthy while doing it.
She sets something – and attaches it to the console.. what is that a bomb?)
Okay – the bomb is set.. Lee and Billy dig dig dig.. and Amanda and Francine watch the clock! Here is where we are gonna pause… Bad Timing maybe.. haaaa… but we gotta pause to chat about those awesome looking boots right? Whose with me???!!!
I can’t believe tomorrow is the last post for this ep! I almost wish we could stretch it out longer and do more posts for it!
Are you going to do “Do You Take This Spy” after or wait till after Christmas?

What the heck, I’ll bite. Here is what is in the Nov. 12, 1986 revised shooting draft script:
Amanda presses her hand quickly to Lee’s mouth.
AMANDA: Don’t…When do you have to leave?
LEE: Billy’s here at six. Why?
AMANDA: Because I want some time. An hour. To be normal people…to fix dinner for you, to sit down and eat it with you…and then fit a lifetime into whatever’s left over. That’s not asking too much is it?
Lee stares at Amanda for a long beat, then shakes his head.
[Scene with Billy and Francine in Billy’s office, then back to Amanda’s.]
Lee is sitting at the breakfast table, dinner dishes in front of him. Amanda crosses, holding a snifter of cognac. She sits, smiles at Lee. He smiles back.
LEE: That was great.
AMANDA: Yeah. (raising snifter) To more great dinners.
She drinks, hands the glass to Lee. He takes a healthy swig. Amanda keeps him from finishing.
AMANDA: Save some…for later.
Amanda leans over and kisses him, then stands, takes his hand and leads him toward the stairs. Just as they start to exit, Lee stops her. He stares at her for a beat, kisses her gently, then bends and lifts her off the ground and into his arms.
[Billy and Francine arrive at Amanda’s house; Francine knocks on the door.]
Francine rings the bell. Nothing. Billy nervously checks his watch, punches the bell. Finally, the door opens and we see Amanda. Right behind her is Lee. The looks on their faces, their clothes, their attitude — nothing tells us anything about what’s been going on inside. Lee steps in front of Amanda.
LEE: Billy, Francine.
BILLY: It’s time to move, Scarecrow. Everything’s set. Let’s go…
Personally, I like the scripted version better. The cognac seems ill-advised before a life-or-death mission, and Lee carrying Amanda up the stairs is a little bit corny, IMO, but I still prefer it to what was filmed. Actually, this is one episode where I prefer the script over most of the changes they made in the filmed version. It seems like they cut out a lot of affectionate moments, not just this (huge) one.

I love, love, love the plan to break into the Soviet Embassy. I love this part of the plot even more now than I did in my earlier viewings of this show. I think that’s because it is very reminiscent of more recent, more “serious” intelligence and crime dramas. There is a season of 24, for example, where both bad guys and good guys break into the White House using old underground tunnels. I especially like Katrina and wish so much that she had been a recurring character. They could have come up with all kinds of ongoing reasons to keep an eye on what was going on inside the Soviet Embassy (or the “Rezidentura,” which is the more precise term for the part of the Embassy housing KGB operations). The KGB is their primary foe in DC, after all! There could have been some great storylines to explore.
I cannot resist one final comment on the stupidity of the idea that the White House would want to let this biological attack slide, citing “diplomatic considerations.” Smyth: They also made it abundantly clear we’re to keep our mitts off lest we risk losing a hand. Enough said? Um, you ARE losing this hand – you are letting them get away with murdering one of your top intelligence agents, on U.S. soil, no less! And now the KGB knows they can get away with this again in the future! Grrrr.
Billy and Francine showing up at Amanda’s door, and Amanda adding herself into the mix as the third member of the backup team, is just wonderful. I think that the deep bonds that these people have formed with each other – a consequence of the important work they do together and the life-and-death experiences they have shared – is a great over-arching theme of the show. They have become like family members to each other.
Is it just me, or did they not allow nearly enough time for the jackhammering from the tunnel into the Embassy store room? Seems to me they should have gotten started an hour earlier, and we might not have had such a nail-biter at the end!

Excellent point and add “cowardice” along with stupidity!
Glad Billy, Amanda, Francine and the medical team are willing to risk their jobs to stop the Soviets inside the USA.

I just asked raunt Wikipedia. She says: An antidote is a substance that can counteract a form of poisoning.[1] The term ultimately derives from the Greek term φάρμακον ἀντίδοτον (pharmakon) antidoton, “(medicine) given as a remedy”.
So ‘antidote’ is a more general term and ‘antibiotic’ is more specific, as it is an antidote acting against bacteria. 🤔

Lovin Katrina’s boots. Yes, I loved the teamwork there, everyone involved is on the same page, Lee was outnumbered. (the last time Francine was at Amanda’s home was the “Saved by the Bells” episode}
The truck scene with Amanda and Francine, love this, as Amanda is navigating the whole operation. You go Amanda!
This is one of my favorite episodes.

I don’t care what Smyth claims. He doesn’t have a heart, even if he tried to stick up for Lee this ONE time.
Lee breaks my heart in that scene in the park. “Might doesn’t sound like such good odds to me…This watch goes off pure and simple…I have less time to live than most people have for a good night’s sleep…” I just want to hug him and reassure him everything will be okay. How on earth did BB not get an Emmy for this?
And then they have to really kill us with another life insurance scene and Amanda saying “I want more time.” This is the second scene that gets me crying every time I watch it.
I like Katrina. She must be a recent addition to the Barnstorm family since Lee just said on “No Thanks For The Memories” that he “used” to have a contact at the Soviet embassy. I nearly had a heart attack when Lee coughed in this scene because of the symptoms of pneumonic plague.
And can I just say how much I LOVE the teamwork scene at the end of the third act? “You’re outvoted, two to one. Three to one.”
LOVE this ep!
