Harry speeds back to capture Amanda for his ‘insurance policy’.. with Lee and Lt.Volkenauer in pursuit..
You know, I’m thinking the whole of this location,the party where Harry tries to capture Amanda, is in Tegernsee..
I think they decided not to do the Solln location.. and they just hid that this is actually still in Tergernsee – you can see behind the trees that there is a lake there..(there is no lake in Solln-I looked!)
In the past, I have struggled to understand why when Harry offers to buy Amanda the hat does Amanda suddenly suspect him? It wasn’t 
that big a wad of cash was it? or was it his demeanour? Fellow smk fans ( sorry I can’t remember who!) suggested a 
few reasons why Amanda was afraid: they were counterfeit 20s [but how could she tell that?? she couldn’t exactly read who was head of the treasury!
].. and.. Harry returned without Lee. What do you think? I guess together it makes sense!! I’ll go with that! Also, it wouldn’t help if 
she was starting to suspect him before they went to the sawmill… anyway.. Amanda runs away.. and hides in the middle of the slap happy dancers..
Lee arrives with Volkenauer and he orders him to watch the exit, as it’s the only way out while he goes and finds Amanda. My goodness, Lee has no authority here in this country, but he still orders around the Lieutenant… ha haaa.. he has a nerve! and.. Volkenauer obeys! hehehee.. I guess Volkenauer understands- this is personal!!!
Why did Amanda move out of the dancing circle? that was a great spot!!! and. why walk backwards! eek!! anytime someone is being chased and walking backwards.. the baddie is behind them!! 
Wow.. you can really see the lake behind them here! Lee arrives just in time.. fight time!! Ouch this fight scene with all those 
landings on the tables must have hurt!! From the looks of Amanda’s expressions- I think she is thinking the same thing! KJ has great facial expressions!!
Of course Lee flattens Harry.. [Hoooray!!!! Very satisfying!!] I love how all the bystanders are watching so calmly.. why, it’s almost like they know what’s going to happen! My goodness.. seems we have a magic crowd!
No people: (that’s Harry on the ground partly obscured by the table and chair)
aaaaand.. magically: Lots of people!!
Hooray for Lee!!
Harry: you always did have a killer right.
[How ironic.. when it was Harry who was trying to be the ‘killer’ ]
What a cheesy line! How could he say that with a straight face? Ahhhh SMK!! I do enjoy the cheese!! hehehee..
Amanda rejoins Lee at his side.. and Harry continues: you understand Pal, it was nothing personal.
Lee replies: Wrong again Harry. It was very personal!
Poor Lee!! So sad- his friend could do this to him, Amanda, the agency.. America.. the world’s economies!! 
Harry is a rotten actor I’ve got to say(to be fair: in this moment!) .. he’s not very subtle response to Lee’s “It was very personal” is so exaggerated it makes me laugh! oops.. and this is actually a very sad moment! eek!
So come on guys- what’s your take on this line of Lee’s?
I have heard people say when Lee says it was personal it is because Amanda was threatened.. Thoughts??? There’s plenty of room for different points of view
I’m thinking it is mainly about their friendship – we were reminded again back at the sawmill that Harry was Lee’s friend.. and that this is quite a betrayal.. They were old friends.. and he betrayed Lee and Amanda when they came to him for help.. Evil man!! Grrrrrr.. Come on.. tell us what you think!!
Interesting to hear Lee say something is personal.. I thought Lee didn’t mix business and personal? hmmm.. glad to see that ridiculous notion is fading into history! hehehe
Isn’t it wonderful to see that Lee has a great friend, Amanda by his side to reaching out to him, comfort and support him as he confronts his old (now ex-) friend Dirty Harry..
Tag time! Lee and Amanda are in new outfits- is this the next day?Let’s tie up those plotlines… Harry is in big trouble.. he made a dumb decision in choosing to go with the baddies rather than make himself a hero with the agency..[I suspect he hated the agency for moving him on after one mistake – like Harriman did in Double agent!] and.. Lee compliments Amanda, that she could work out it was better to be an agency hero that a lousy traitor..
Amanda responds: it’s logical!
Lee (quietly smiling) : You’re a very logical person.
Amanda matter of factly: yes I am.
Wow!! a few compliments from Lee? he is always so much nicer when they have wrapped up the case! err his case ahem..
Amanda asks how Lee knew Harry was dirty..
Lee responds: well there’s a couple of things. First of all it was his lifestyle, no matter what- how good the
[here Amanda reaches for Lee’s pinkie! see below..] rate of exchange is he could never afford that chalet.
And.. Lee knew Harry was Dirty Harry when Harry let slip about the counterfeit 20s and Lee never said 20s..[not that we could have possibly known that because we had all had far too much pear schnapps.. oh no wait.. we just didn’t see that scene- hick!]
Winner!!! we have a winner!!! The most annoying extra ever!!!!

anyway.. Soooo about this pinkie grab – isn’t it adorable!!!!
I wonder if the pinkie thing was an ad-lib.. It feels like it.. but I don’t know..
Anyone else think so?? and Amanda ( or KJ?! I wish KJ could stop by and set us straight! ) reaches for his pinkie when he misspeaks his line.. ?? I don’t think they do it again, and it doesn’t seem to be a Lee and Amanda type thing- at this stage of their relationship.. but it is so cute isn’t it.. What a team!!!
The compliments are mutual! Amanda praises Lee’s catch with the 20s..
Amanda: whooooo that’s very clever of you.
Lee: well thank you!

Lee whispers to Amanda: err one question.
Volkenauer: Frau King, I don’t wish to detain you any further but errr.. one question. [ROFL!!! so Colombo!! I love to see Lee give Amanda a little glance here.. it is like they are sharing a private joke between themselves.. awh!! ]
Amanda: Yes?
Volkenauer (focusing only on Amanda- not even glancing Lee’s way haaa!!) : what are you doing for dinner this evening? [ROFL!!! from this moment on- I just watch Lee.. Hilarious!!!!]
Amanda: ohh haaa [If looks could kill: Volkenauer would be dead!!! rofl!!! ]
Volkenauer: perhaps a typical Bavarian meal?
Amanda: thank you very much but I think I will be having dinner with my family tonight in Arlington Virginia
or breakfast…
whichever it is!..

Well well well! haaaa… Lee looks totally stunned when the cop asks her out! His face is soooo funny in that instant!! Is there any other explanation for Lee’s reactions here than Jealousy??? I can’t think of one!!
Lee looks very smug when she turns Volkenauer down and he is watching Amanda’s reaction closely! .. ohhh I wish she had said yes to a typical bavarian snack or something before her trip to the airport!! hehehehehee..
Lee’s looking possessive again don’t you think? Where do you think Lee is at here?
My take (at the moment!): He finds Amanda attractive, but he doesn’t want her at this point.. but that doesn’t stop him from not wanting any other man to have her either!! Lee seems pretty pleased with himself that he knows Amanda better than this cop.. I think Lee feels secure at the moment, that he knows Amanda, and knows she wants to get home to her family – he would have been utterly shocked if she had delayed her trip home for a date!
I think there are some times ahead soon where Amanda takes Lee a little by surprise – forcing him to be reminded that she is indeed a woman with her own desires.. ( whoo hoo!!)
How can these two stand so close and look at each other and not realise what is between them?!! Wouldn’t it have been cool if the cop had said something like- sorry man! I didn’t mean to trespass on your territory I didn’t know you were a couple! … but.. I guess the writers were playing it more subtle than that! Hehehehe..[and I am glad they did! ]
I think Volkenauer has a lot of guts asking out Amanda with Lee glowering at him right next to her.. Good on him!!! hahaaaa It would have been soooo fantastic if there had been cause for this cop to visit the United States.. maybe visit washington DC and have Amanda show him the sights.. haaa haaaa.. He was a good match for Lee I think!
Oh I wanted to mention when watching Lethal Weapon 3 a few years ago – I was chuffed to see our Lt. Volkenauer with a mo!! tee heee!!

only.. he was no longer a good cop.. but had turned dirty.. Oh the irony! It gets better though.. look what else I found in Lethal Weapon 3!!

There’s so much touching in this episode! Despite Lee’s crankiness at the beginning, that’s what I remember most about it: Lee’s arm constantly behind Amanda’s back, the helping hand on her arm, and most of all, that pinkie thing 😉

I was thinking exactly that! Granted, I may not have noticed it during the original airing, but acts of old-fashioned courtesies like this get my attention. And that little interaction definitely struck me as wooing. (Okay, okay, I’m an incurable romantic – I do appreciate how men used to stand up when women entered a room)
Also, jealous Lee then smug Lee (with his dimples deepening) at the end – OMG! <swoon!>

Such a small world… I was just googling around online, looking at what I could find on one of my absolute favorite series “The Jewel in the Crown” (which was played on PBS in the 80s). I came across a still from the show of Sarah Layton and Jimmy Clarke. The actor who plays Jimmy Clarke looked SOOOO familiar. I had remembered his character, but not really what he looked like. I’ll be darned, it’s Stuart Wilson! “The Jewel in the Crown” was filmed the same year at “Our Man in Tergensee.” Small world!

I have been watching Danger Man on Amazon Prime recently (for the first time) and had to laugh when I saw the episode “Under the Lake.” It’s clearly the inspiration for “Our Man in Tegernsee” which I suppose should’t come as a surprise, but it was fun to discover! “When twenty five million dollars in forged currency floods the European capitals, John Drake is assigned by U.S. Intelligence to trace the source. The trail leads to an ex-Nazi General staying at a lakeside hotel in the mountains. Drake faces death before he can solve the case and uncover the secret of the lake.”

I actually love this episode. Inspite of the 2 mins jail scene but i guess it had to be there for the rest of their emotions throughtout the episode to sit well…i’ve thought that Lee often runs off to his Gillian or Randy Babies to Poconose or Bermuda or wherever that he goes…just to runaway from his feelings for Amanda😂😂…but after that VERY LONG scene in the jail..he just seems to looove being there with her🥰He is caring and comforting. And that pinky hold just feels so natural🥰🥰. They are so relaxed and comfortable with each other . I can say that Lee is not doing a very good job at trying to hide his feelings for Amanda. It’s like the more he tries to runway from his feelings the more he is put in situations with her and it gets harder for him to understand it.
I think this episode had all the Lee and Amanda moments…frustration,care,comfort,PDA and of course the little jealousy that creeps in when other men pay attention to Amanda😂😂😂😂😂overall,a good S2 episode rewatch.

I’m years late on this, but finally found you—found my people! My daughter and I love the show and your posts crack us up!!!!
Anyway, I don’t think this episode is misplaced because in the previous episode, Lee accepts Amanda as his partner—professional only. This one starts with how her personal predicament interrupted his personal “clandestine affair”. IMHO I think this intends to show that their professional relationship is moving forward, but the personal one has not begun—-haha, well, not outright.
The importance of the pinky hold is that this is the first time that they have any PDA and it is natural; not awkward. Affection in previous episodes has them both looking in opposite directions and feeling awkward. So, while the episode starts with their personal relationship being very tense, it ends with a delicate pinky hold—-the beginning of their personal relationship.
I love some of the thoughts on the meaning of a pinky hole and thank you for those. I think the man walking past was planned and continues to build the burn for us. Gee, they made us wait!!!!

OMG I love this episode soooo much! even though I wanted to slap Lee for half of it, if I had been a witness to him treating Amanda like this, I certainly would have, that’s for sure! I would have been all like “what the heck is WRONG with you, man! How can you treat such a sweet, wonderful person like this!!!” But Alas, this never happens in the show (that I remember), and it would have been cool to see how Lee would have reacted to someone really taking a stand to how he treated Amanda early on.
I am back and forth on if this is before or after “Brunettes are in”, because Lee does act like a jerk (whether intentionally or not) throughout the show (though I wont get into where here 😉 ).
I also think she’s really started to “grow” on him here, I dont think he has started to fall in love per say, but there is SOME sort of feeling there, based on how he acts when other men hit on her, even this early on in their relationship! I still would have liked to see his face if she had said yes to Volkenauer asking her out.

I just happened upon this site while trying to find out which, if any of the outdoor shots from this episode were actually anywhere near Tegernsee, and no doubt will be coming back and starting from the beginning. Very impressive from what I’ve seen just for this episode. Stuart Wilson? The bad guy from The Mask of Zorro? I had no idea!
Since I’ve seen it mentioned a few times I would like to add my thoughts on the tip-off Lee mentions regarding the counterfeit money. I’ve always taken that to be a reference to the scene where they are explaining Amanda’s predicament to Harry (as he is pouring booze). I realize Lee asks about “last night” when talking to Harry about the day before, but if Harry was that drunk in the afternoon (and persistent about staying that way) I don’t imagine there would have been much more opportunity to go into it off-screen before his passing out that is referenced in the breakfast scene. It is a thinker though.

You might be right!!! This made me wonder – maybe the ‘last night’ was the scene you mention – maybe it was daylight but it was mid summer and daylight till late? sooo I could have been night? The assumption was if it was night it would be dark, but that isn’t always the case.. does this work?

I agree that the pinkie hold seemed like a Bruce and Kate thing rather than a Lee and Amanda thing. I have always wondered why they did that. I would love to ask them! It may be a line flub thing but if you notice she switches the purse from one hand to the other in order to prepare for the pinkie grab. And he seems to almost flub the line because he is distracted by the pinkie grab. Then Kate smiles in reaction to the pinkie hold and then gets back into character. Someone needs to find out what that was all about!

I love the long posts and all the photos…you always post something that I seem to miss…I am loving this journey through smk…I am addicted and find every spare moment I have I am checking this blog…I am going to be sad when I get to the last post….does anyone know if all of the episodes will eventually get posted??? Hey Gruvy Granny – happy new year!
Since this is my blog- I can answer your questions 🙂
I started the blog to walk through all 88 episodes – following the characters and their journey as they experience it – ie. without looking ahead.
I do intend to cover all 88 episodes.. how long this will take is anyone’s guess – it could be another two years.. or another four years. I have no idea! It depends on how busy real life gets.. I just enjoy where I’m at, and take as much time as needed to savour an episode with my wonderful fellow smk fans here – such as yourself!
After I’ve finished the 88 episodes? I have mentioned I’d very much like to go back to season 1 and blog them again – you’ll have noticed I’m making this blogging thing up as I go along – and the first season’s posts are much less detailed. Such a shame!!! They are soo funny!! and there is so much fabulous dialogue in season 1!! I wish I had looked at it in more detail. So, at the moment, I hope to go back to Season one and blog it again.
After that I have no idea. I guess I just have to wait and see how life goes.. and if I have the time to commit to this in 3 or 4 years.
You can rest assured Gruvy Granny that as the writer of the posts walking through the episodes – I fully intend to do all 88 episodes 🙂 I am hopeful all the wonderful smk fans who stop by and chat will be with me on this journey!

Thanks Iwsod for your reply…I know that blogging all 88 episodes is almost a full time job….I will patiently wait for each and every one of them as I have now become addicted to all the posts and comments…..revisiting these episodes takes me back to some good and bad memories, but mostly remembering the days of raising two wonderful children…as I watch my DVD’s..there are lots of things I see now that I don’t remember when they originally aired, and your posts point out lots of inconsistencies that I noticed after watching them again…..luv..luv…and patiently waiting…

The pinkie thing is just so adorable. I always had the impression that it was a bit of a KJ and BB thing and they unconsciously did it during the take, but decided to leave it in. Just my impression. When I was young, a pinkie swear was sacred; you promised to keep a secret or do something by sealing the deal with a pinkie swear.
And RedGold, you are so right on with your comments about Volkenauer, he’s a wonderful character and it would have been great if he was brought back for a couple of Washington DC episodes. Fanfiction anyone?

BB does at least one of the stunts in the fight scene, I think he falls off a chair which is makes a nice change. Not that stunt Lee doesn’t do a good job but it just adds a bit of realism 😉
I think Amanda twigs to Harry when she sees the American money. Why would he have any when he’s been living in Germany for so long.
Not personal?! How can it not get personal, I hate it when people say that. He betrayed a friend, tried to have him murdered and also targeted his very special lady friend. It doesn’t get much more personal than that 😦 I don’t think his line is all about Amanda although I do think she is part of it.
Oh Volkenauer looking casual and look, no hands in his pockets! Maybe that’s because he’s about to be honest about his true intentions 😉 love the expressions on Lee’s face. Talk about being possessive and then completely smug. I kinda wish Amanda had taken him up on his offer, just to make Lee squirm 😉
The pinkie link is sooooo cute. Totally unscripted IMO given the smirk on KJs face. I suspect it’s because BB fluffs his line a little. Don’t care I just like the moment between them, whether its characters or not 🙂

Completely forgot to add comments about Lethal weapon 3, brilliant. It can’t be a co-incidence that the boys pic is in the shot. I wonder if anyone involved in the production of the film was also involved in SMK just like the actor. Well spotted IWSOD 🙂

I always thought that by the time Harry got back, Amanda had time to figure out that he was not one of the good guys – especially since I believe she began to suspect him over the don’t-give-Billy-details phone call. And, yes, it was personal with Lee. After all, he came to Harry as a friend to get help for another friend (Amanda). In addition, Lee’s ties with the agency go deep, and here’s a good agent who has turned bad. Yeah, it was definitely personal – in more ways than one.

No, definitely not boring with the pix of Lee! He looks mighty fine in this episode!
Regarding the actor playing Harry, I agree, Iwsod. I thought he was painful throughout. You already mentioned the whininess … that was just the script, it was how he portrayed it to the point it was nauseating. And then his accent was all over the place, as though sometimes he was trying to suppress his native drawl and other times he let it all out. Definitely not one of my favorite baddies.
I always thought the “It’s Personal” line was directed fully and squarely at Amanda, in spite of the loss of the personal friendship between Lee and Harry. It’s almost as though Lee is saying “You wouldn’t know a personal relationship if it hit you in the face, but I have one right here.” [And now he’s starting to realize it … contrast to the start of the episode … major growth for Lee to realize the treasure of a friendship he has with Amanda.]
If that extra gets the ‘most annoying”, runner up has to go to the fellow dancers in the The First Time dance scene. Such a lovely piece to clip, and then bam, there they are blocking Lee and Amanda both looking dreamy.
I do love the pinkie hold (who doesn’t?!) but it does seem very random and I agree (and I’m sure you know there is much yuku speculation about this as well) that it looks personal and wholly unscripted. KJ seems to have a misqueue with her purse, BB muddles the line .. maybe that’s there was of saying “let’s keep playing this out and see how it goes!”
(I love the little line flubs and acting flubs! Makes me appreciate the acting all the more. As do bad actors like the Harry guy … makes you realize how spoiled we get by BB and KJ with their great expressions and great timing.)
Length of posts? Medium!! Ok, I know that’s hedgy and I stand in the corner alone once again on this one. I just have to confine my post reading to my treadmill time 🙂 And I do find that if the post is very long, but the time I get to the end, I’ve forgotten all that I wanted to comment on. But your posts are lovely no matter what the length! I love how you raise all the interesting questions for debate, and I love all the sidenotes like the Tegernsee details and the pic of the boys in LW3 … and spotting the Volkenauer actor, how did you ever know it was him??

About why Amanda suspected when she saw the 20 dollar bills. Well, you can not pay with dollars in Germany, Harry lived in Germany for a long time, so he has no reason to carry American money. You might be able to pay with foreign money at the airport, but even there I found it a bit far fetched, that Amanda got American money as change in a shop. Especially if you think, that everything larger than 20 dollars is quite uncommon and she got it as change, makes me worder, if she paid with Deutsche Marks and asked for American money as change?

When I am busy it may be a case of – as little as I can post – but for the moment I have the luxury of more time 🙂 I don’t want it to take an hour to read or download them though. So I guess if I aim for around 1000 words a post I should be keeping most people happy!

That pinky clasp is surely one of the sweetest, most natural moments in the whole series. The way they do it, seemingly unconsciously, makes it feel like it’s an action they’ve done many times before, yet to my knowledge it’s a move that was never seen before or after. I wish it had been: I love having these little “things” between them (like Amanda adjusting Lee’s tie). Lee and Amanda are such a couple in this last scene, even if they don’t recognize it yet!

Hi Julia.. your theory about the fact they were 20 dollar bills being enough makes sense.. I think the script explained well how Amanda got the counterfeit 20s.. if you want to have a look.. I think she got the shop owner to do an exchange deal for her because she needed american $$ and she didn’t care what the rate was.. so it sounded like the script was making out like some shops would do american $$ – but you know what smk is like.. sometimes it is not reality! tee hee..
Yes Raffie, good point.. it was rare that Amanda was separated from Lee and wondering if he was ok and what was happening! I can’t think of another time at the moment! except in The first time- that comes to mind.. I’ll keep a look out in future! 🙂 Regarding Lee’s reaction to Volkenauer’s arrival – I think the way I described it wasn’t the best.. so I’ll try again! For me, I see it as a misdirect – a way to momentarily increase the suspense.. that Lee is wondering what is going on.

I don’t know how I knew that was volkenauer in LW3, I seem to have a knack for identifying actors faces and what they’ve been in..but.. the actor’s name doesn’t necessarily come with the recognition!! 🙂 thanks for the encouragement Raffie! you’re a gem! I love to have some debate too!!!

I have a little theory..I suspect Lee at this stage is not only protecting Amanda from dodgy men ( yes pun intended!) but he is also protecting his view of Amanda as a mother of two small boys.. who shouldn’t be out dating men! who shouldn’t have desires of her own!! who shouldn’t be beautiful and desirable!! – I suspect there is a little of that going on at this point.. [ ‘you only need to look at her’ to know -Lee says this line in the next episode, Affair at Bromfield Hall!! ]

I think that Volkenauer is a wonderful character; he saves Lee, mocks him, and then asks Amanda out on a date right in front of him! James Delano, Davy, the Baron, Alan, and some other men who show an interest in Amanda may be involved in nefarious activities, and perhaps Lee talks himself into thinking that he’s protecting her by expressing his displeasure over her going out with them. But Volkenauer is definitely a “good guy,” and he lives in Germany, which would make a relationship between Amanda and him difficult, yet Lee is furious over this simple dinner invitation! Lee’s motto where any other man and Amanda are concerned is: “I…I just don’t see you together.” Follow those instincts, Lee.
As for post length, IWSOD, whatever works for you is fine with me!

You know, this whole pinkie grab thing left me confused when I saw it first, because it was so… well… unexpected. 🙂 You know, we did this often when we were little kids, it was a serious friendship symbol/ritual and was also used for making “vows”, would be sweet to think it means the same here (although I’m sure it doesn’t) ^^
Yet, there’s also a bavarian custom called “Fingerhakeln”. Two people link their index fingers together or grab a leather band with their middle fingers and try to pull the other over the table. There are also real competition and rules for it! 😉 “Ordinary” people (who want to avoid dislocated fingers) prefer using the pinkies for a little fight to see who’s the stronger one. I know it has nothing to do with it but I would have loved to see Lee and Amanda fighting their “partnership” out like this! X-D
Iwsod: I would say I prefer the longer posts! The short ones always leave me like “Wait! There’s nothing more for today? Oh please, no!!!!” 🙂
By the way: I just love to watch Lee’s face in the last scene. He looks so absolutely like “How dare you say that? I gonna kill you” 😀 Would have been fun to see Amanda teasing him a bit with pretending to think about Volkenauer’s invitation or something like that! 🙂

I get the impression that the linking of little fingers is some sort of gesture to ward off bad luck because they let that pole come between them as they’re walking together, but I don’t know where I got this idea! May have dreamed it! But that gesture is adorable, partly because it’s never explained.

I don’t know if anyone has touched upon the pinky thing after this post, but I wanted to weigh in.
I know it is a superstition thing that if you are walking with someone & something comes between you (ie a pole, a meter, a sign post) then you link pinkies to ward off bad luck. I can totally see it being a random KJ moment & BB just went with it. It’s a definite tribute to their smooth working relationship & it’s so totally adorable!!

I just looked up “pinkie swear” and this is what I got from Wikipedia:
“The East Asian tradition presumably originates in China, thence spreading to Japan, and may be connected to the belief that soulmates are connected by a red string of fate attached to each of their pinkies”
It also mentioned something about a promise not being broken and after the betrayal from Harry I bet Lee is appreciating Amanda’s steadfast friendship here..
