Prepare yourselves..It’s double vision time! We find Amanda in her room, not in a hospital gown or anything.. in her clothes, wanting to get out of there! She’s talking on the phone to Dotty: Yes Mother, well tell Jamie not to scratch. [LOL gee why didn’t Dotty think of that..]
The shot widens to include Karen entering the room unnoticed behind talking Amanda..
[can anyone here the terminator noise???!!]
Amanda: alright I’m sorry and I’ll be home as soon as I can… [home? they are in a hotel yes?] …I love you too Mother. Okay, byeee..
Amanda hangs up…
and looks up to find a sourpuss version of herself!
Karen: Hello Mrs King.
[LOL dig the hand on the hip with attitude!] Whoooooooooo!!! Love the line down the centre of the screen there.. this must have been top stuff way back in the 80s before Computerised everything!
Rofl!!! the music here is hilarious!!! very weird, off kilter and errr …creative!
There goes KJ with those fabulous facial expressions!!!!
Karen gives Amanda a big smile when she can see Amanda is taking it all in..
and then in a split second – evil!!!!!
whooooo Fabulous job KJ!!! she sells it for me!!! Plastic surgery?? yeah it’s really possible! this is possible!
The scene ends here..
Poor Amanda!!! It must be insane to suddenly see someone who looks just like you walk into your room like that – Amanda must have wondered about the side effects of that gas after all! KJ does fabulous facial expressions…but I find myself thinking: if I saw my twin walk in the room – I think my brain would seriously go into another dimension!! LOL.. I guess Amanda can’t scream or there’d be problem with this plot.. again! Amanda could have fainted at the end of the scene.. then things would have made better sense. (IMHO of course! )
I couldn’t help but think though, when she looks Karen up and down all shocked, that she is finally getting a look at what she looks like in that hair..with those ear buttons… and that outfit!!! argh!!!! very scary stuff.. Seeing a dead ringer of yourself? that’s easy compared to this fashion epiphany!! 😉 Be afraid Amanda!! After forcing Karen to get her haircut like that – she is no mood to be merciful!!!
So how did they kidnap Amanda, use Gordon and the trolley/ambulance props? No idea!!! ugh.. I can’t say I mind not knowing..I’ve given up on this plot making sense..maybe I’ve reached saturation!
We cut to the ambulance at the construction site of a high rise.. note everyone- it’s very high!!
ahem..
Gordon’s touching Amanda’s face and admiring Amanda’s bone structure..
man.. does every baddie have to do that?? Von snob, Sinclair.. now Gordon.. gag..
Just what the heck could Amanda be thinking at all this?? She is asking questions about who Karen is.. so I guess she is trying to get her head around it.. whoo Gordon told us her last name! Karen Brickman lol..
Amanda: I don’t understand, I thought it was Lee you were after?
Gordon rolls his eyes: Ohhh I wanted to get Stetson Mrs King.. haaa hii.. ugh.. I even hired two gentleman very highly
recommended.. then they moved in to do the job.. huh! you know what I got for their troubles? They’re both dead.
YAWN!!!
We already know this.. At least we can see when Gordon’s back is turned, Amanda is trying to untie her bindings.
Go Amanda! seems she is trying to keep Gordon talking while she works to get free.. After everything, Amanda’s brain is still in gear! [LOL it’s almost superhuman!]
Gordon explains that he had lots of pictures of Lee and Amanda was in lots of them.. and that she wasn’t hard to find. this is rather disconcerting no?? [Not everyone who can put two and two together is a friendly Russian agent trying to collaborate to stop a nuclear bomb from going off!]
Whooo this bit is semi interesting..
Gordon: From the video tape, it was clear that you and Stetson were close. So we turned Karen into you, put her in your place. Stetson drops his guard and he is deeaad!
[ Muahahaa!]
Awh!!! Amanda looks really sad at hearing this!!! Though I love love love the idea that with Amanda-Lee’s guard is down! Awh!!
ugh.. do we need to hear again about phony Amanda killing Credle and Treloggen? yawn.. this dialogue is repetitive.. this actor playing Gordon, Dennis Lipscomb – he is listed as a ‘Special Guest Star’ – who is he?? Is he well known? He mostly has lots of scenes with KJ, are they former co-stars?? anyone?? seems to me like they’ve given him a lot of lines they didn’t need to because it’s him.. and I have no idea who he is
Amanda: Lee is Dead?
Gordon: He will be soon…
[Love the look Amanda gives him at hearing this- maybe this is her version of a ‘you’re scum!’ look! ] … You know I never intended for you to be in the middle of all this.
[BTW- this whole scene?? Not in the script at all!!!]
Cue the other worldly chimes! LOL.. Very appropriate too! I’ve never noticed this before but look at the writing in that car space in front of the entrance! It says “LAPD!” whahahaa!! That is magical and weird huh!
We’re back at the hospital and Lee has come to pick up Amanda..
I love how Lee looks to be in such a good mood to be picking up Amanda as he approaches her door – He’s excited to see her wouldn’t you say??
with his cheery knock on the door and listening at the door.. He is such a goner!!! Don’t tell me this man isn’t crazy about Amanda!!
[Look at his jaw go BJo!]
Lee knocks on the door: Amanda? It’s Lee. Is it okay to come in?
Amanda’s voice: Oh yeah sure come in Lee!
We see Lee opens the door with a big smile for Amanda.. and I can’t help but think Noooo!!! Don’t be nice to her now!! This isn’t Amanda!! ugh!!! He is so cute though, being all attentive- but it is so frustrating that he is being attentive to Karen and not Amanda! Amanda had to wait a long time to get that kind of treatment! I don’t like to see it wasted on Evil Karen!
Lee: Hi!
Karen (who Lee thinks is Amanda): Hi.
I’ve got to leave it here for the moment sorry! Otherwise this post will be huge, or small and pretty darn depressing when ending with that pointless scene between Amanda and Gordon! You know, kgmhror made a great suggestion in the comments of post 9 of this episode- that maybe this was intended to be a 2 hour special – showcasing KJ as the baddie kind of thing.. I thought that was a great idea!! good one Kgmhror!! (or ‘Bink’ ) – It’s worthwhile reading comments and joining in the fun
Okay well I’ll finish up now and be back very soon with the rest of this scene –it’s one of my favourites of the episode..and when you read what I think of it- you’ll know why! byeee!
Psssstttt… Iwsod… you’ve got two number nines… 😀
Thank goodness Gordon outed EK’s surname… I was starting to really need to scrub out my brain after falling over a fanfic with my name in it. :p
Love the ’80s technology. I ROFL to myself all the time looking at the car phones and the monitors with about 100×100 resolution and the cabinet-sized blinky light machines (i.e., supposed to be scary powerful computers). Ahhhh… those were the days. I remember playing Taipan! on the computer in high school (while taking a break from programming in BASIC) and thinking it was so freaking amazing. LOL!
I don’t know what I’d do if I came face to face with someone looking like me… Actually, I’d probably just assume that I’d finally lost the last of my marbles! ROFL!
Ewwwwww…!!!… Gordon! Get your creepy mitts off of Amanda’s face!
Awwwwww… Lee is so happy to be seeing Amanda (swoon-thud) and to be able to tell her… No. Wait. Next post. :p
I like to poke fun at the plot holes and the mini bloopers (duplicate license plates, etc) but I love the show for Lee and Amanda’s story. The other stuff doesn’t take away from it at all–it’s just too good–in fact, it just makes for an even more entertaining ride. Did I already say I love the show? 😀

ROFL! thanks KC.. yes I want to pretend the Gordon/Amanda scene doesn’t exist so I made two number 9’s! 😉 not really haaa.. thanks for letting me know – that’s confusing! I’ll fix it now 🙂
Yeah! that dated technology is just part of smk’s charms!!!! 🙂
I agree.. I’d lose my marbles too.. Amanda is amazing!
here here KC – you love the show?? noooo!!! really?? 😉

Uhhhh… my Taipan! clickie is broken–it needs the ! on the end of it… (Can Iwsod or BJo fix it, please? Ta! Otherwise you end up face-to-face with an Aussie snake…)
And yes–Amanda truly is amazing!!!!!

Amanda’s reaction to seeing Karen reminds me of the movie The Parent Trap (the Hayley Mills version). They had the same kind of response when they first saw one another and saw they looked alike. I think I would have the same kind of confused, what’s going on here look. I wouldn’t know what to think. Karen can’t seem to wait to see Amanda’s response. I think this white top/blouse Amanda and Karen are wearing was the same one from ALSALS when Amanda was first visited by the MOTY lady and her sons were playing in the Sudan.
So loving Lee’s excitement and anticipation about seeing Amanda. It’s like he is so relaxed knowing that she was not harmed by the snake and the gas and that it was not poisonous. Still don’t know why he didn’t have someone posted outside her door seeing as twice her life has been invaded by this Redding character. He’s just so happy to see her and it makes me happy too! It’s really the first time he’s looked happy since what he thought was the initial phone conversation with Amanda. Nice how she can bring out that side of him.
I have resolved to be nicer to my SMK in regards to plot holes, episode order, coincidences, and continuity. Not that I won’t still comment, I will just be more accepting maybe. When I look back at many of those shows of the time period there were some lollapaloozas in regards to some of the above. We’ve already mentioned Dynasty and how it went off the rails, the Colbys had someone abducted by aliens, Greatest American Hero and the hero couldn’t figure out how the use the suit, Bobby dying on Dallas being a dream and many others. Wasn’t there even a show called Manimal? What makes SMK stand out is the beautiful chemistry of BB and KJ and the way the romance of Lee and Amanda unfolded. 30 plus years later and we can still swoon about it and chat about it and marvel at it. I may still mock from time to time, but in a good way.

Hi Valerie. I said something very similar in response to Morley’s comments in the last post.. maybe you didn’t see it.. but I agree.
gotta run!
[about what makes smk great.. and plot holes don’t matter]

ear buttons?! They look the size of drawer handles those square ones! Maybe Amanda is so shocked to see how daft they actually look on her. I am sooooo glad they didn’t use that superimposing technology where they have that clear outline around the figure. Considering it was what early to mid 80’s I think the shot of them together is pretty good.
I can’t help but look at that top of Amanda’s as a cross between a set of hospital scrubs and a straight jacket!
Loving how Lee is sort of smiling to himself as he’s going in to see Amanda. Anticipation filling him with pleasure *squee*

Do you think you would recognize yourself if you found yourself in a situation like Amanda’s? I know we look at ourselves in the mirror every day, but did you ever notice how a photo of yourself looks different from what’s in the mirror? It’s partly the reversal of the image, I guess, but maybe also the difference between looking out from inside vs. looking at. I think it would take me a few seconds to realize that the person in front of me was just like me.

“She is finally getting a look at what she looks like in that hair..with those ear buttons… and that outfit!!! argh!!!! very scary stuff.. ” HAHAHAHA!!! You made my day iwsod! And I remember back in the dark ages of the 80s yelling at the screen for Lee to grab Bad Amanda and find the real Amanda now!! No Lee, don’t be nice to Bad Amanda!! 30 years later I still yell at him about it. He doesn’t listen….. still traumatized …….

Maybe looking at herself with the hair don’t worked. It looks like she started growing it out after this episode, right?

This is embarrassing, buuuuuut I went just now and looked at photos of me in the mid-80s and wow, Amanda borrowed my hair. I always thought I had long hair, but I must have suffered from the same aberrant behavior and cut it all off. Oh dear, at least there aren’t any frakking huge earrings. *hangs her head in shame* 😦

I had a very short, asymmetrical cut in the late 80’s. Actually I just looked at a picture of myself taken about 15 years ago and I had short hair then too. I kind of liked it and for a moment I thought it might be nice to do that again. Didn’t last long… phew. I don’t mind short cuts, they are nice on some people, but I hate to be a slave to going to get a hair cut every few weeks (plus, I have to be able to get it in a bun).

I had long hair that I wanted to tease out of the parameters of the yearbook photo like the 3 other girls on my page, but fortunately my hair is very fine and ended up just looking normal, and bonus…it covered my button earrings.

Thanks for the lovely feedback Jule!!! You made my day 🙂 and don’t worry.. everyone looked terrible in the 80s! 🙂
So true.. I cant wait to get to the next bit.. haaa good one Debilyn yeah I would have loved to have seen Karen have some tests done haaa!
Maybe an colonoscopy while they’re at it 😉
[LOL not that I would want to see that literally!! haaaa.. but err I would have liked to see Karen find out she had to endure it tee heee.]
I can understand why no one wants to discuss the lame Gordon/Amanda scene.. why oh why.. lol.. thus why I chose to at least start the Lee/Karen scene!
Thanks for filling me in on Dennis Lipscomb! It sounds like he was prolific! The academy awards theory sounds like a winner Valerie.. thanks for the research Valerie and KC!

LOL! Just realized what you said, “everyone looked terrible in the 80s.” Haha!! Wonder what they’ll be saying about us in 30 years…..maybe the 80s style will be back (god forbid! ) and we will get trashed for skinny jeans, platform heels, crocs and the Kardashians among other things. (Rightly so I’m thinking;))

Speaking of names that sound like aliens, the first time I heard people talking about the Kardashians, I thought that they were saying “Cardassians,” which is a species of aliens on Star Trek. They’re repressive, militaristic, and somewhat reptilian in appearance, so I had interesting images in my head the first time someone started talking about Kim Kardashian around me. I lost interest when I realized what they were really talking about. 😛
I’ve ranted about people who follow weird fads before (possibly here, although I don’t remember for sure). It’s really only the people who try to follow the fad-of-the-moment that end up looking really weird in photographs years later. People who wear simpler clothes look fairly normal. That’s why Francine’s clothes are generally weirder than Amanda’s. Amanda only looks strange when she’s wearing something that was a brief fad, like those headbands. When Amanda’s wearing something like a basic skirt/blouse combo, she looks fine. Things like jeans and t-shirts have also been worn for decades, so people who wear those look okay (although you can get picky about the exact cut of the jeans or how tight/loose the shirts are). Men’s suits haven’t changed much in decades, so Lee might actually look the most normal of everyone, when you think about it. (I’m sure a number of people would be willing to study that more closely. 😉 )

Ha ha! Jestress, I never made the connection between Kardashians and Cardassians. Seems fitting 😉
And you are right, classic looks stand the test of time. Fads don’t. Okay, I will put away my 8 inch platform heels, latex leggings and let my half-shaved hair grow in. LOL! just had an image of the kids walking in the house for Thanksgiving to behold me rigged out that way. No swoon, but lots of thuds as they hit the ground. Hee hee *evil laugh*
It’s interesting that as much as we stress over Amanda’s fashion choices, you can’t hide how lovely she is, in and out!

OMH – my kids wondered why I was laughing out and I read them the “She is finally getting a look at what she looks like…” passage. Absolutely hysterical!

I, too, will comment later, but I also checked out Dennis Lipscomb and he was in the movie A Soldier’s Story just before SMK. The movie received a lot of attention, was up for an Academy Award along with several other nominations. Several of the actors were also nominated for awards. I have seen bits and pieces of it, but it was pretty big at the time, so maybe that’s why he was a special guest star.

I don’t have time to comment on the ep–gotta get to work–but I googled/IMDBed Dennis Lipscomb, and my hunch is they wanted to add to his collection of TV show appearances… CHiPS, WKRP in Cincinatti, Barney Miller, Little House on the Prairie, Dallas, The Greatest American Hero, The Powers of Matthew Star, The A-Team, Jessie, Hill Street Blues, Benson, TJ Hooker, Call to Glory–that was all pre-SMK! (Wow–my brain is in 80’s show overload now! Takes me right back to my teens!)

I think Amanda would have had a very interesting ramble upon seeing her twin. I suppose they drugged/chloroformed her, put her on the gurney, and Gordon took her out and brought her to the building himself. Karen couldn’t have gone with him, because Amanda not being in the room would have been really suspicious. It would have been fun to see Karen have to get a shot or give more blood. “Sorry, but the test results were inconclusive, we need to do this again.” Wonder how she would have reacted? hee, hee, hee
Oh, such a big smile for Amanda from Lee. I do enjoy how he greets who-he-thinks-is-Amanda, but the next part is the best part. I’ll save some comments for that post.
